Trijicon Offering Glock Owner’s Sights Designed For Suppressed Platforms.

One of several practical problems with adding a suppressor to your pistol is sight height. Trijicon has just addressed that pressing need with the introduction of its new night sight. The company has specifically designed the sight to rise above the suppressor tube for more precise control and shot placement.

The new sights will co-witness with Trijicon’s RMR red dot sight providing a comprehensive solution for use on a suppressed platform. Initial offerings will be for the ubiquitous Glock pistols; however, I’m fairly certain that SIG offerings are not too far behind. The new sight will be offered at an M.S.R.P of $145 and should be in the distribution channels by mid-June 2013.

Is There Such a Thing As a Bicycle Saddle That is Too Small–Another True Story.

I enjoy biking as a supplement to PT and I try to do about 30 miles every other day. While I was out yesterday, I was passed by a female cyclist who sent me back to my days in college as I studied endosymbiosis.

endosymbiosis_c_la_784

The picture represents the third stage in endosymbiosis. This is a scientific term that describes the mechanism by which one organism lives inside of the other. Endo describes inside; symbiosis means a mutually beneficial relationship.

Looking at her from the rear, this is precisely what her butt to saddle interface looked like. That had to be uncomfortable don’t you think?

This has been another true story!

This is another great hydration system from Camelbak. It’s hard to imagine what more can be done with a polyethylene bladder, hose and bite valve but the folks at Camelbak continuously improve on the concept.

After SHOT Show, in Las Vegas, I had an opportunity to take a closer look at Camelbak’s Armorbak™, part of the company’s military line, and loved it.  Read my review!

Margaret Thatcher Dead At 87

Former Prime Mister, Margaret Thatcher, has died of a stroke at 87. The UK’s controversial “Iron Lady” was loved or despised, there was no in between; however, one thing is certain, her 11 years as Prime Minister transformed the UK’s mindset on politics and economics. Margaret Thatcher was a staunch Conservative and possibly one of the finest, in British history, to hold the high office.

300 Blackout Presentation

images

While at SHOT Show 2013, I happened by the Daniel Defense exhibit to check out their new 300 Blackout rifles: V5-300, V7-300 and ISR-300. Typical Daniel Defense, top of the line. In the process, I ran into a “sand crab”, Naval terminology for civilian employee, and I made the mistake of expressing the merits of the 300 Blackout. He immediately goes tilt and starts ripping me a new ass saying that the enhanced M855 had better performance and that he had access to data that I did not have. Now, mind you, at no time did I suggest his organization abandon the enhanced M855 for the 300 Blackout, nor did he tell me where his data came from. However, it was clear to me that out of the box thinking may be absent in the military planning and evaluation processes.

The 300 Blackout is a tool; like anything else it  most definitely has its place regardless of this guy’s data. Its beauty is that you gain 30 caliber performance with no changes to the weapon system except for a barrel change; magazine, bolt and bolt carriers, buffers, springs, et. al. stay the same.

The 300 Blackout story gets even better for suppressed operation.

Robert Silvers of Advanced Armament Corporation has put together an excellent presentation designed to inform the community on the 300 Blackout. His data is good as are his methods and summary.

Colorado Group Recalling Anti-2nd Amendment State Senate President Morse.

Colorado Springs, CO, April 3, 2013Colorado grassroots group begins recall of State Senate President for attacks against Constitution and Bill of Rights. The group has the Colorado Secretary of States’ approval to begin gathering signatures for the recall of Colorado State Senate President John Morse (D.) for his stand and leadership against the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution and his attack on the constitutional rights of Colorado citizens.

The Basic Freedom Defense Fund (BFDF) was recently formed to educate the public concerning their Constitutional rights and to hold state politicians accountable for voting against the express wishes and Constitutional rights of their constituency.

BFDF’s spokesperson, Nick Andrasik –“Senate President Morse has made it very clear – through both his words and his actions – that he put greater value on the thoughts of interest groups in Washington D.C. and New York City than those of his own Colorado constituency.

“In a recent interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Morse stated that he advised fellow Senators to ignore the thousands of emails* sent in opposition and that he (Morse) was ‘proud of my caucus… and the way they’ve gotten this done.’ This behavior is more that of a tyrant, not an elected official. The contempt and arrogance displayed in the face of an enormous outcry of objection from tens of thousands of Colorado citizens shows how little Mr. Morse cares for the will of the people of Colorado and solidifies our position that he should no longer be in office.”

Several public meetings have been held in Colorado Springs, with hundreds of concerned and outraged Coloradans turning out to protest what they feel are extremely dangerous attacks on the Constitution and innocent citizens’ rights by Colorado politicians supported by outsiders from Washington and New York City.

BFDF intends to educate and support disenfranchised Coloradans in an organized effort to remove elitist legislators from public office through a more informed constituency in future elections and through the recall process initially.

More information about BFDF as well as links for corporate and individual financial support and volunteering are available at the BFDF website, www.bfdf.org.

*NOTE: Aside from the comments on MSNBC concerning the emails by Colorado Senate President Morse (D) the people, businesses (including our company) and much of Colorado law enforcement tried to stop these now laws and some others still under process with thousands of letters, tens of thousands of calls, protests, picketing and much more–all shunted aside and ignored by the recently elected majority party held Colorado Assembly, Senate and Governor.

Electromagnetic Pulse Weapons (EMP) Are Closer Than You Think.

3-netline-jammer

Long a favorite of Hollywood screen writers and movie makers is the energy weapon. These devices, referred to in the trade as EMPs or Electromagnetic Pulse weapons, are much closer to production than you think. All of the major economies are actively developing the technology; for example, Boeing’s EMP drone,CHAMP, is capable of flying over an AO and disrupt communications and systems (routers, servers, gateways, etc.). The Israelis have also developed an EMP, Netline’s Portable Jammer Packs. Its about 3 times the size of the M67 fragmentation grenade, which when planted and activated will disrupt all forms of communications.

What makes EMPs such a desirable tool is that they can be used “without incurring the loss of human life.” I place that in quotes because eukaryotes, which is the cellular organization that makes up human life, relies on a difference in electrical potential between the cellular milieu and the cell membrane. It is conceivable that a more highly developed EMP will shut down cellular activity. So, you’ll be happy to know that we may not have to scrape your intestines off a wall; instead we’ll simply find you with the ON/OFF switch in the OFF position.

If EMPs enter the scene in significant numbers you will see an acceleration in light based technologies. Light is impervious to electromagnetic artifacts. Imagine a computer’s processor operating with a photon rather than an electron, or an I/O buss running on fiber optics. We live in exciting times.

I’m pretty impressed with the red/green mix. It works extremely well for the medical side of the house and it also has exceptional map reading and navigation application. Take a look at the picture below. This is the Jacksonville sectional, which covers Tampa as well. This picture was taken in total darkness only illuminating the chart using the red/green combination in low power. I experienced no loss of night vision.

Aviation sectionals are as detailed and in some cases more so than your topological maps. Take a look at the detail, for example the double tepees, which indicate cluster obstacles like a clump of buildings. Take a look at the radials, NOTAMs (Notices To Airmen references).

If you click on the picture you can expand it. Good to go for aviation and land nav. I’m going to go out and check the light signature one of these nights and I’ll update this post with my findings.

Mayor Bloomberg Plans $12 Million Ad Blitz on Gun Control

michael_bloomberg_106911443The New York Times reported today that the Mayor of the City of New York, Michael Bloomberg, is personally bankrolling a $12 million ad campaign in an attempt to influence Congressional leaders who he believes could be swayed. The ads are scheduled to run in twelve states.

Now, I suppose it’s Michael Bloomberg’s prerogative to do as he wishes with personal funds; however, it is hardly appropriate as an elected official sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution of The United States of America.

Mayor Bloomberg, every law abiding man and woman who supports The Second Amendment also supports your right not to own a firearm; it’s your choice. No one will ever subject you to that, so please don’t use your office, personal wealth and power to subjugate those that are in complete disagreement with you. The Senators that you are attempting to influence have a more solemn responsibility and that is to represent the will of their constituents, not yours. There are a million things that New Yorkers need, and would like to see accomplished, in their city, why don’t you focus your attention on them.

On March 14, 2013 Otis Technology became registered as an AS 9100:2009 certified facility. This certification includes ISO 9001:2008 compliance.

The AS 9100:2009 is a standard specifically for aviation, space, and defense organizations and incorporates the ISO 9001:2008 quality standards as well. Otis pursued the AS 9100:2009 certification because of its status as a defense contractor and supplier of gun cleaning equipment to military and government agencies.

This standard helps organizations apply uniformity around their Quality Management System (QMS). This registration certifies that the QMS at Otis Technology in relation to the design, development, manufacture, and supply of gun cleaning equipment and accessories does indeed meet the ISO 9001:2008 and AS 9001:2009 provisions. Otis was assessed and approved by National Quality Assurance, U.S.A.

StressVest ™, World ’ s First Non-Projectile Force on Force Training System

P1000412

You often hear the term reality based training batted around as the new training Nirvana . It’s really a mischaracterization because there’s no level of training that can come close to reality. Reality is a huge variable, which you generally cannot control to a great extent, so the best you can hope for, in a training scenario, is for your trainee to internalize skill sets so that implementation is intuitive; based on a trainees own assessment of his or her reality.

Having said that, technology has empowered us with the ability to regulate the training environment in both frequency and complexity. What was once taught in steps can now be concatenated, or chained, to create a fluid scenario.

Technology has also dramatically reduced costs. Organizations that invest in these technologies will be able to increase training frequency and intensity, as well as reduce costs, by reducing travel, facility costs and ammunition costs.

It is true that computer and laser based training has come of age, and next month, I’ll be reviewing laser based training products that you can use at home and will have a marked improvement on your performance. The economics unfolding from these technologies are significant and irrefutable – paybacks typically run 3 or 4 range sessions depending on how you train.

One such system is the StressVest™, designed, marketed and sold  by Stress Vest, Inc., Winnipeg, Canada.

sv-activate2The StressVest™ is a laser based concept. The system consist of a laser enabled weapon, a vest receiver and head sensor and what the company calls StressX™ PRO Belt, but I’ll call a trainee instantaneous feedback module.

Utilizing this system, force-on-force training takes on a new dimension. Laser impact to center mass on the vest receiver will result in a signal being sent to the belt, which in turn  delivers an annoying vibration or a hefty electric shock. The StressX™ PRO Belt is programmable and works on a wireless connection with the vest receiver. Both belt and vest receiver can be worn under a garment adding reality to the training scenario.

Costs? Roughly $2500 for a one person kit and about $500 for a laser dedicated pistol. Training may also be implemented using actual weapons equipped with laser inserts. Nominal, when you consider the cost  and safety related issues of projectile based training in today’s economy.

Desert Tech Covert SRS-A1 Covert

Jake of Desert Tactical Arms was kind enough to hold a pose for me.

One of several problems that have plagued military and agency snipers is their unique silhouettes, revealing their presence, but more importantly exposing them to direct fire. Snipers are historically a prized target for enemy combatants; therefore, anything that can be done to diminish their characteristic signature has to be seriously considered.

I had the opportunity to fire the Desert Tech SRS-A1 Covert Rifle at Ft. Benning, GA during the International Sniper Competition. I was extremely impressed with its footprint and overall design. During my test firing, I expected recoil to be heavier than what it was; however because the rifle’s center mass is much closer to the shooters body recoil felt minimal. I was making consistent hits right at 1100 yards. From a distance, the DTA SRS-A1 Covert looks no different than an M4 so snipers or designated marksmen do not stand out like a sore thumb.

If you have not had the opportunity to conduct a serious evaluation of Desert Tech’s entire line, you should. Everything from the interchangeable calibers to its outstanding bull pup chassis works extremely well. Since it was founded by Nick Young in May of 2007, Desert Tactical Arms has grown into a full service turnkey provider. Today the company manufactures rifles, ammunition, suppressor and delivers training.

My thanks to Jake of Desert Tech who was kind enough to hold a pose for me.

GASTON J. GLOCK style LP’s DONEGAL WOOL HUNTING SWEATER

GGS_Donegal_Sweater

I love tweed. In fact, I like tweed so much that I look for wood shavings, branches and the aroma of freshly cut wood in the garment. So, if I sound overly enthusiastic it’s because I know good tweed when I see it and this is the real McCoy.

This is a gorgeous sweater made from 100% Donegal tweed. Donegal tweed is only produced in the County of Donegal, Ireland.

The sweater is a slip on featuring a high-closing mock neck and zipper, with a zippered breast pocket.

I own a couple Donegal wool ski sweaters that I bought in Edinborough, Scottland eons ago; they still look like they just came off the shelf.

The Gaston Donegal Wool Hunting Sweater is available in sizes S – 3XL for men and XS – 3XL for women on their website for $209.00.  Check it out!

Extrema Ratio’s New Offerings From IWA 2013

Extrema Ratio Doberman 4

The designers at Extrema Ratio have, over the years, impressed me with an ability to improve on perfection, which is the reason I consider their combat knives to be some of the best in the world. One of my all time favorites is the Doberman III, which discontinued around 2006, has a faux Tanto point that simply rocks. It’s not a full Tanto profile but in the Doberman III Extrema preserves the Tanto prowess; without the sharpening idiosyncrasies. For 2013 they added a Doberman IV, which preserves all of the impressive attributes of its distinguished lineage but in a subtle clip point. This is a combat knife through-and-through!

Extrema brought out a push dagger for 2013, which they market as the SERE 1; it is lightyears ahead of its Executive EX2, which had a farm tool presence to it. The SERE 1 is strictly business.

Frédéric merci pour les fotos!

Spyderco ‘ s Enuff Leaf – Review

Spyderco Enuff Leaf

Let’s face it, tactical folders are an indispensible component of anyone’s kit; earning that standing because they are compact and weigh considerably less than the MK3 Mod 0 I use to carry. But, they fail! And, sometimes at the most inopportune moment, as consistent with Murphy’s law. Nothing surpasses a fixed blade knife for the more arduous tasks, its as plainly stated as I can make it. However, the problem with fixed blade knives is that they’re heavy and get in the way. So you end up carrying them on your belt or strapped to your leg around the calves…

If anything that I’ve said so far strikes home, take heart and check out Spyderco’s Enuff line of compact fixed blade knives. I had a chance to review the Leaf and walked away mightily impressed.

Update 12 Mar 2013: Spyderco offers a MOLLE adaptor kit that works with their product line. It sells for $29.95 + shipping

Yellow Jacket™ iPhone 4 Stun Gun Case – Review

P1000934Let there be no doubt in your minds that we’re living in defining times for our great nation. The Second Amendment is under assault by individuals who believe that law abiding citizens do not have the right to defend themselves in and outside their homes.

The responsibility to protect yourself, family and home rests with you and no one else! It is only elected officials, entertainers and media elites with unrestricted access to bodyguards and protection services who assume that police are there to protect. Two faced? I think so, and nothing is further from the truth.

I also recognize that not everyone will want access to a firearm, as a matter of personal choice, and that too is your right. For those with that mindset, you may want to consider a less than lethal approach to self-defense. It is for you, that Yellow Jacket™ developed their iPhone 4/4s case.

Three Connecticut Based Firearm Manufacturers Run Local Ads.

The anti-gun movement, successful or not, will earn its place in U.S. History right next to Watergate, Prohibition and the Repeal of the  First Bank of the United States. All of which serve to prove Galbraith’s “If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.”

First the State of Colorado, one of America’s bastions of liberalism, all of which, by the way , comes from the Denver and Boulder areas, is doing its best to run out of town well over 1,000 jobs and several million dollars per year in economic benefit to a number of communities; not to mention shrinking their tax base. All in the interest of public safety but choosing instead to sanction gangs and drug users.

Following in Colorado footsteps, the State of Connecticut is now considering more stringent gun control measures and in the process damage three firearm manufacturers with histories dating as far back as 175 years; they are Colt Manufacturing Company, O.F. Mossberg & Sons and Stag Arms. These highly regarded and reputable firms account for over 1000 high paying direct jobs, and an equal number that is part of their supply chain.

All three companies and their employees have taken out local ads to tell their story. They are worth watching. Hopefully, Coloradans and Connecticuters will see through the smoke and make well thought out decisions.

LASERLYTE® LT-223 And Reaction Tyme™ Trainers

P1000872

I’m getting a little ahead of myself with this post but I want to get you thinking about it now. We’re all suffering through this crazy ammunition shortage driven by panic buying. Making matters worse, there are a number of retailers in the market that are taking advantage of the situation, and their customers, with near criminal price gouging.

The folks at  LASERLYTE® have a slightly different thought in mind and for 2013 they have added some new products to their training repertoire. The LT-223, which can be described as laser ammunition for your .223 platform and the Reaction Tyme targets.

I’m currently working on a comprehensive review, which will be available in April, but in the meantime you can address the majority of your training needs, in the comfort of your home, with the addition of LASERLYTE® laser training products to your bag of tricks. Check it out!
