iPhone Approved For Military Networks Connectivity.

Last Friday, 17-May-2013, the DoD announced that DoD issued iPhones are approved for use on military networks. The approval comes from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) for all DoD issued iPhones and iPads using the iOS6 operating system. The clearance applies solely to DoD issued devices. DISA specifically excluded privately owned Apple mobile devices. DISA has previously approved Blackberry and Samsung Knox operating systems for use on military networks. DISA’s goal is to support 100,000 multivendor mobile devices by February of 2014.

The announcement probably comes as good news to Chinese intelligence services who undoubtedly have created ports in firmware during the manufacturing process. Hopefully, DISA has explored all avenues for potential exploitation.

A Call To The Tactical Nylon Industry !

P1010412

The overwhelming majority of professionals working in the defense sector and tactical industry are gentlemen. Worldly individuals with strength of character and a great deal of class. The mere thought of disarray is vulgar to these men. They are leaders in their field, Larry Vickers, Pat Rogers, Mil-Spec Monkey, Military Moron, Rick Taylor,  Soldier Systems Daily, Chris Costa, Travis Haley; I can go on and on. I too am in that group yet I’m caught in the horns of this dilemma.

I carry in my pack, a small Craftsman socket set; it comes in VERY handy for a variety of things – not too heavy and complete enough to do the job. However, its case was made by some lackluster minor functionary and I have yet to open it to find an orderly assortment of sockets. Now, I’m a reasonably intelligent man; therefore, I don’t need lettering to tell me what size socket goes under the lame elastic, which is looser than a Bogotá hooker.

Furthermore, there is not one respectable yacht club in North America  that would not expel you immediately. If I were to show up at one of Pat Roger’s classes with a tool kit that looks like that, he would immediately bestow me with his infamous moose cock patch. It is simply an outrage!

Surely, someone in the tactical nylon business can come up with a MOLLE compatible pouch, suitable for gentlemen. I have scoured the planet and have yet to find anything.

SOFIC 2013–Closing Comments and Photo Gallery

This year’s SOFIC conference was an exciting event and every bit as good as prior years. The combined efforts of NDIA and USSOCOM account for that. There was, as always, a wealth of information transferred. If you are a small business and aspire to do business with USSOCOM, SOFIC 2013 and NDIA membership are a must. More so than the Big Army, Navy and Air Force, USSOCOM goes out of its way to empower small business; however, your first stop is the TILO Office. The business climate going forward is “meet USSOCOM needs;” nice to have will not cut it and if you want to know what those needs are SOFIC and TILO is the place to do it.

USSOCOM is currently deployed in about 80 countries around the world and the force is starting to show a bit more than fraying around the edges. The country is placing increasing demands on the SOF community without putting its money where its mouth is. By my estimation, ±30% of SOF capabilities are derived from the “Big” services and Sequester is taking its toll.

In spite of DoD wide fiscal challenges, USSOCOM has as its number one priority Force Preservation; taking care of the service member and his or her family. Holding a number two spot on its list of priorities is networking. I don’t mean that in the IP sense but rather in social networking. Partnering across the globe so that partner nations are capable of taking the fight to insurgents and terrorist organizations. To accomplish this goal, SOF operators will need to undergo a transformation from kinetic operators to diplomats; language skills and cultural awareness will become tools of their trade. Excellent opportunity for cultural anthropologists and for computer-aided curricula to help SOF personnel acclimate.

The need to collaborate with partner nations across the globe will require significant improvements to communications and information sharing so you can expect C4ISR remaining a high priority on the acquisition side. Mobility is also an area of interest for USSOCOM. Folks part of Naval Surface War (NSW) recognize the need to begin to transition Navy SEAL teams back to their genetic origins. Future SEAL operations will increasingly involve waterborne activity.

Other priorities include signature reduction technologies and technologies that make the operator safer, more comfortable and more effective.

If you are not already an NDIA member consider joining and reap the benefit of collaboration, solidarity and knowledge! Take my word for it, it’s worth the investment.

Israeli Defense Industry giant, Elbit Systems is playing a major role in integrating the IDF through some rather impressive technologies that span the gamut from weapon sights to integrated networks. While at SOFIC, I had an opportunity to check their flight training simulator. I was very much impressed.

My advice to Boeing and Lockheed-Martin Pssst… Elbit Systems may be a good investment opportunity.

SOFIC 2013 – B3 Blast Gauge System

P1010255The central theme at year’s SOFIC Conference was force sustainment. No other critical need has a higher priority for USSOCOM. Anything that can be done to ensure the well being of the operator and his family will be done.

The overwhelming number of casualties and injuries sustained by forces in theater are from IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices. In a great many instances, the soldier, sailor or airman will be exposed to the blast but escape physical injury, yet blast damage is insidious and results in serious TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries) if untreated. According to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, over 200,000 service members have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury since the year 2000. Until recently, measuring the exposure to events leading to TBI has been next to impossible.

B3 (Black Box™ Biometrics), Rochester, NY has developed The Blast Gauge™ System. Think of it as a seismometer worn at three points of the body, the chest, on the back at shoulder level and at the back of the head helmet mounted.

If no blast has been detected, each sensor will have a green LED lit. A yellow blinking LED indicates that a blast was sufficiently strong be be detected and a flashing red light indicates a serious blast has been detected.  In both flashing yellow and flashing red conditions you should seek immediate medical attention regardless of how you feel at the moment.

Monitoring your exposure to blasts IED, RPG or mortar is important to your well being so don’t leave home without your Blast Gauge™ System.

SOFIC-2013 JetLev R200 Response To A Reader Comment

This reader felt that I overlooked the element of surprise…

Employment of the JetLev R200, in its current state of development, requires that planners have adequate intelligence prior to an operation. For example, many harbors and particularly those used by military vessels  have acoustic sensing devices that can detect a swimmer  or swimmers in the water as well as vessels surfaced or submerged. The JetLev R200 has a significant acoustic signature: pumps, water flowing through the hose, water flow from the jets, the impact of water exiting the jets. Even in areas where there is a considerable amount of biologics it is easily detectable through SONAR and other acoustic devices.

Thanks for your thoughtful question!

SOFIC 2013–Rogue Gunfighter

P1010206

The folks at TAG and Rogue Gunfighter gave me a sneak peek at their new “No Vis” medical kit. Unlike the traditional approach, which calls for wearing an individual medical kit on your belt or vest, Rogue Gunfighter’s med kit fits around your ankle covered by your pant leg. The “No Vis Ankle Med Kit” uses hook and loop attachment; the back side is padded and covered in a durable soft mesh fabric for comfort and ventilation.

When it hits the shelves in 30 days, the No Vis Ankle Med Kit will be available as a pouch or a complete individual medical kit with SOF Tactical Tourniquet, Trauma Shears, Combat Guaze, etc. I’m sure the actual contents will vary depending on market requirements but you’ll have most of the basics.

My one area of concern remains the eventuality of traumatic amputations, which could potentially leave the operator without a means to manage his or her  injury.

SOFIC-2013 JetLev R200

P1010229

The JetLev R200 was part of the waterfront exhibit. As I watched the demonstration, I couldn’t help wondering why any respectable SEAL would use one of these. I mean, they look like a lot of fun, but I wondered what practical application does it serve? I also have to say that I was not alone; a majority of the observers shared the very same thought. Before I get into the application, I’ll give you some of the technology.

As you can see from the picture on the left, the JetLev consists of a jet pack attached to a frame. The frame holds the controls, the jets, a small seat and seatbelts. The jetpack is tethered to a small boat via a hose that looked to be about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Since the operator can use the JetLev above or below water, the hose has provisions to run an air hose along its outer surface. The jetpack allows the operator to lock the throttle in position so both hands are free for weapon manipulation or any other hands-on requirements.

The small boat contains the seawater pumps and air tanks needed to support the entire system. The small boat may also be ballasted so that it has a lower freeboard; given proper camouflage it would be undetectable in state 1 seas or higher. Protected harbors maybe a slightly different story but not impossible.

The application is boarding. A team enters the water a few nautical miles away from the vessel making an underwater approach. The operators can be at a depth equal to the length of the hose. Once under the vessel’s keel they can rise to the surface and quickly get over the vessel’s freeboard to board the vessel. Getting out of the jetpack is easy,  simply twist to unlock and you’re out. Most cargo vessels when empty have a freeboard of 80 feet or more, and fully loaded about 30 to 40 feet. The benefit here of course is that you eliminate or reduce the need to bring inflatable craft along side and board using rope or a ladder.

Anyone that has ever boarded a vessel at sea wishes that life could be as easy but technologies, like the JetLev R200 is one more tool that can be selectively applied to address a problem.

P1010279Amber, one of the instructors and a delightful chick, offered to let me fly it but I would have had to make my pants into shorts and decided against doing it. Amber, hold the thought, perhaps next year.

SOFIC 2013–S&S Precision Stalker MPTV

P1010200

There is an amazing amount of James Bond(ish) technology at SOFIC and this year is no different. I have no doubts that “Q” would turn green with envy. One such item is S&S Precision’s MPTV (multi-purpose tactical vehicle). This vehicle can be flown or driven. Lift is accomplished by deploying an airfoil canopy.

P1010201

Propulsion (land and air) is provided by a 5 blade fixed pitch propeller. Operating the vehicle does not require pilot training; however, prospective buyers will undergo a 30 day training program.

Operating parameters:

  • 27 mph take off speed
  • 156 mph max ground speed
  • 61 knots max air speed
  • 250 feet of runway to get off deck
  • 3 weapon attachment point
  • 869 pounds

SOFIC-2013 Rogue Gunfighter LVR and High Threat Concealment

I’ve said this a million times over. If you are not an NDIA member you are missing the boat. If you want to be synchronized with USSOCOM requirements you need to become an NDIA member and you need to attend the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference, in Tampa, Fl. So, I was glad to see folks from Tactical Assault Gear (TAG) present and exhibiting at this very prestigious industry conference. TAG is a great organization and are continuously adding to an already diversified tactical product line. While perusing their stand, I spied with my own eyes two very interesting offering.

First was the Rogue Gunfighter LVR. If you’re not familiar with the LVR it is superbly discrete and compact carrier. This vest is highly configurable; offering a cummerbund that functions as an M4 magazine pouch. The LVR offers a number of other features, for example the well thought out cable channels. The LVR is manufactured by LC Industries.

Without any armor, it weighs 3.2 lbs and with cut soft armor, which

P1010207

gets you to Level IIIA, you’re looking at 6.2 lbs. You have to love that.

The picture on the left gives you a good feel for the vest’s profile. Very discrete.

Also of interest was High Threat Concealment’s (HTC) Low Profile System. Both pistols and magazines are held close to the body for a very low signature conceal carry platform.

SOFIC 2013–Kestrel 4600 Heat Stress Tracker

P1010257

When Kestrel introduced its Heat Stress Tracker, the company made it possible for every soldier to monitor his or her own exposure to heat stress. Prior to its inception, the U.S. Army only monitored conditions for a general area, which meant that heat stress assessments where never very accurate.

The Kestrel 4600 Heat Stress Tracker, with Compass, performs two vital functions. Determine appropriate exposure to heat stress conditions for occupations with heavy gear requirements, such as HAZMAT response and firefighting, and utilize wind speed and direction for plume prediction and modeling. Carry less equipment and get more accomplished quickly in emergency situations! The Kestrel 4600 Heat Stress Tracker is available with or without Bluetooth functionality.

Kestrel 4600 Measures:

  • Wind speed
  • Temperature
  • Wind chill
  • Barometric pressure
  • Altitude
  • Relative humidity
  • Heat stress index
  • Dewpoint
  • Wet bulb temperature
  • Density altitude
  • Wind direction
  • Crosswind
  • Headwind/tailwind
  • Wet bulb globe temperature
  • Naturally aspirated wet bulb temperature
  • Globe temperature

SOFIC 2013–QinetiQ MAARS

P1010299

SOF operators have at their disposal an array of unmanned robotic tools that is unprecedented in the history of warfare, for example QinetiQ’s MAARS system.

The Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System (MAARS®) is an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed expressly for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) ; increasing the security of personnel in forward locations. MAARS can be positioned in remote areas where personnel are currently unable to monitor their security, and can also carry either a direct or indirect fire weapon system. Operators can direct and control the MAARS UGV over a distance of 1000 meters. MAARS modular architecture means the system can be configured for a variety of mission, including direct fire support.

As show above, the MAARS vehicle is configured with a 40 mm grenade launcher and 7.62 light machine gun, including a variety of sensors.

SOFIC 2013–Streamlight

P1010221

Made a quick stop at Streamlight’s exhibit to check out their new TLR-2 HL(G). As you may suspect, the “G” stands for green. With its introduction, Streamlight has added green laser functionality to their line of weapon mounted lights.

I confirmed what I already knew, which is the green laser is more visible in bright light or against a non-reflective target than a red visible laser.

P1010222

The picture on the left was shot at a distance of about 30 yards against a white wall; when projected against a black non-reflective ceiling only the green laser was visible.

The Streamlight TLR-2 HL(G) is available now from Streamlight or your favorite retailer.

SOFIC 2013 Beretta ARX-160A1

P1010217

Beretta’s ARX160A1 a contender in the US Army’s Carbine Competition will become the ARX100 when the commercial variant goes into full production later in the year. Beretta’s management expects the first units to hit the shelves this summer.

The ARX100 will have all of the features available on the ARX160A1 with exception of the selective fire trigger pack. When I was first introduced to the ARX160A1 back in 2011, I felt it was the most ergonomic and operator friendly carbine on the market. It’s now 2013 and I still hold that thought.

Earlier this month, stories surfaced suggesting the Army’s Carbine Competition was being terminated citing that General Odierno was “very comfortable” with the M4A1; however, vendors have yet to be formally notified so it may be prudent to shelve that thought until notifications are in the mail.

In the meantime, Beretta will be giving the commercial space something to look forward to in the ARX100, which will launch in 5.56 x 45 and 300 Blackout.

P1000891If you are as frustrated as I am about the ammunition “shortage” and scalpers you’ll want to seriously consider what LaserLyte has to offer in the way of laser training tools.

Given the current situation, it’s easy to see why firearm owners are making drastic cuts in range time; placing at risk the skills sets developed through a well-planned and disciplined training regimen. Firearm safety and weapon handling skills are perishable, so to maintain proficiency you must continue to train.

The folks at LaserLyte® have made it possible for you to maintain and improve your skills, safely and in the comfort of your home, with the introduction of some very innovative laser training devices.

Laserlyte Laser Training Tools

Josh Billings nom de plume for one of America’s great 19th century humorists, Henry Wheeler Shaw once wrote:

“Adversity has the same effect on a man that severe training has on the pugilist: it reduces him to his fighting weight.”

We may not all be boxers or marshal artists but todays shooters are as much of an athlete as anyone else. The days of going to the range, once a month, trying to make a very tight hole on a sheet of paper are rapidly disappearing, so to be successful you must train.

This month, I’ll be reviewing  some of Laserlyte’s unique set of tools to help you succeed and develop a high level of proficiency. With an average day at the range coming in at $50 – $150 these cost effective tools are something you’ll want to seriously consider; not to mention the fun factor!

What’s especially noteworthy is the NL_productimage_even_MAG275toolless elevation adjustment; that alone is worth its modest price. Windage and elevation adjustments provide positive detents.

Remington and Tracking Point Will Joint Venture To Produce Precision Guided Firearm (PGF) systems.

In a press release dated 29-Apr-2013, Remington Arms Company of Madison, NC has announced that it will joint venture with Tracking Point Inc. to manufacture Precision Guided Firearm (PGF) systems.

“A Precision Guided Firearm brings fighter-jet-style, lock-and-launch technology to hunters and sportsmen by integrating digital optics and target tracking technology into a shooting system (rifle and ammunition). With TrackingPoint technology, shooters can tag their target, persistently track it as it moves, and hit their aim point at extended ranges. The PGF automatically adjusts for many downrange factors including bullet drop, temperature, barometric pressure, wind input, cant and inclination. In addition, each PGF streams live video to a mobile device and downloads recorded video of each shot via mobile apps.”

If its product is successful, the joint venture will most certainly attract the attention of the Joint Services as it promises to address the military’s stated need for a “true” one-shot one-kill platform.

A Perspective On Tactical Lighting

To say that tactical lighting has taken some amazing turns over the last 3 or 4 years is a gross understatement. Thanks to the R&D efforts of companies like Streamlight the technology has advanced at an exponential rate with no end in sight. I’ll be wrapping up April’s review schedule with a look at the Streamlight TLR II HL. To simply say that operators, law enforcement and outdoorsmen now have 600+ lumens of lighting available does no justice to the technology.

With that in mind, I’d like to share with you three very revealing slides, for comparative analysis. Throughout the slide series the light source was kept 60 feet away from the wall.

Slide 1.  Xenon Bulb 80 lumens

P1010140

Slide 2. LED light source 150 lumens

P1010141

Slide 3. LED light source 630 lumens

Catch my review of Streamlight’s TLR-2 HL on 30-Apr-2013. It’s amazing…

GE Capital Will No Longer Provide Financing To Gun Shops

The Los Angeles Times ran a story that deeply saddens me because it is a vulgar display of discriminatory business practice. Apparently, the finance arm of General Electric has decided to discontinue extending credit to gun shops across the United States. Frankly, I do not understand their policy, especially in light of the fact that gun shops are federally licensed businesses; operating legally under state and federal oversight. I think something needs to be done about this.

GE Capital issued this statement on 24-Apr-2013 addressing its new policy:

“As a responsible lender, we regularly review our lending policies and products to meet changing conditions and requirements. In 2008, we adopted a policy to cease providing consumer financing programs to merchants whose primary business is to sell firearms.  Recently, we implemented a more rigorous audit process in our sporting goods segment in light of industry changes, new legislation and tragic events that have caused widespread reexamination of policies on firearms. This process has affected less than 75 retailers (approx. .001% of all gun retailers) and an immaterial part of our sales volume.”

The new policy will not impact diversified department store operators who also sell firearms, like Dick’s Sporting Goods; however, if you’re a small business owner, who’s primary line of business is firearms you’ll have to get financing elsewhere.

I think America’s gun owners should respond by boycotting GE products especially it’s financial services. If you’re a car dealer look at alternative sources for your flooring. If you operate a retail business and support the Second Amendment look to other sources for your lines of credit or receivable financing. If you offer your customers a branded retail credit product underwritten by GE Capital please take that business elsewhere.

Please be sure to share this story with your elected officials. This nonsense needs to stop.

This is a ridiculous position to take and discriminates against hard working entrepreneurs legally operating their businesses and actively contributing to their communities and local job markets.

Two Explosions Injure 23 and Kill 2 At Boston’s Marathon

130415161920-boston-marathon-explosion-09-c1-main

At about 15:00 (3:00 PM) EST, two explosions were heard at the Boston Marathon. First responder have located an additional two devices. Both bombs were located near the finished line and reports indicate the explosions were staggered. As of 16:44 (4:44 PM) today, 15 April 2013, no groups or individuals have claimed credit for the bombing. The exact extent of the damage and injured is not known.

Update 16-Apr- 2013 01:15 : There are now 123 injured and 3 deceased. Among the injured were trauma amputees, others had bone and soft tissue damage. No suspects yet, but the FBI is said to be checking an apartment in Revere, which is about 5 miles from Boston.

Update 17-Apr-2013 23:39: The casualty count is now 170 injured and three dead. Forensic evidence suggests the bombs were built using pressure cookers and included ball bearings and nails to intensify damage. Video from security cameras in the vicinity of the explosions have resulted in 2 suspects but no arrests have been made. Pictures of the suspects are being distributed to law enforcement. Forensic work still continues.

Update 18-Apr-2013 22:49: The FBI has released video and still photos of two individuals of interest. The suspect wearing a white cap appears in unreleased video leaving a satchel at the site of the second explosion. The FBI requests your assistance in identifying and locating these two men. The individuals are considered to be armed and dangerous and should only be approached by law enforcement.

Update 19-Apr-2013 09:03: The two persons of interest, now suspects, have been identified. The individual wearing the white cap is 19 year old Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev. The second male, wearing the dark cap is 26 year old Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Both men are Chechen nationals who moved with the rest of their family to the United States from Kyrgyzstan. Thursday night, the two robbed a 7/11 store and at approximately 10:30 PM shot an M.I.T. campus police officer. Later that evening, the two carjacked a Mercedes SUV and lead police on a car chase that ended in Watertown, MA. Police reports indicated that during the chase, the two were throwing explosives out the windows at police. Cornered, a gun battle ensued and 26 year old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed. However, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev got back into the stolen SUV and crashed through police lines escaping into the night. Police are conducting a house-to-house search for the escaped suspect.

The picture on the left is a Seven Eleven security camera photo of  19 year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Update 19-Apr-2013 23:39: 19 year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is in police custody tonight. He is at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center undergoing surgery for wounds incurred in last night’s gun battle. Acting on a homeowner’s tip, police found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev  hiding in a boat, covered by a tarp, sitting on its trailer in a Watertown home driveway. The boat’s owner noticed one of the tarp cover straps had been cut. He approached to investigate when he noticed traces of blood; as he looked under the boat’s tarp, he saw Dzhokhar Tsarnaev  laying on the bottom of the boat covered in blood. When police and FBI arrived at the scene, reports indicate, there may have been gunfire exchanged; however, the FBI’s hostage rescue unit was able to capture Tsarnaev.

We wish to congratulate the Watertown Police, Boston Police, FBI and MA State Police for a brilliant job, the entire operation was well coordinated and executed, from start to finish. Well done!

Boston may now breath a sigh of relief as this ordeal is over… Sadly, these two men leave over 180 seriously injured and  4 dead – including an MIT campus police officer.
