Happy Birthday USMC

Every 10th of November we celebrate and honor the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It was on this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines…

“That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of privates as with other battalions, that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies; unless
dismissed by Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalions of Marines.”

Franklin Armory Introduces The F17-V4 .17WSM

Press Release:

Franklin Armory, maker of quality MSR firearms, is pleased to announce the launch of the forged F17-V4 chambered in .17 Winchester Super Magnum.

Compared to the 5.56 NATO cartridge, the .17 WSM obtains similar velocities with long range accuracy that most varmint hunting and target shooting enthusiasts desire. The gas piston system, developed in partnership with Osprey Defense, adds increased reliability and decreases cleaning requirements. Because the .17 WSM is a rimfire cartridge, it is not classified as an “Assault Rifle” in most states. In California, the F17-L is distributed with a standard magazine release button!

The Franklin Armory F17-V4 platform is based on a traditional modern sporting rifle with a few key distinctions. The rifle’s buffer was custom made to match the lighter recoil and shorter stroke length of the .17 WSM. The patent pending bolt carrier group is based on the original Eugen Stoner design of a rotating locking bolt, but is cut differently to facilitate the custom sized magazine feed lips and the pistol length gas piston system. The carrier is also notched to have a fully functional forward assist. The Free float, tripod mountable handguard has provisions for installing a bipod stud and Magpul M-LOK accessories.

“The new F17-V4 features all of the same proven characteristics that has made the F17-L one of the most reliable and accurate rimfire MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) configurations on the market today,” said Jay Jacobson, Franklin Armory President. “Like all of our other quality firearms, we have incorporated the same attention to detail to provide a high-quality and reliable platform that I am sure all of our customers will truly appreciate.”

The F17-V4 retails for $1,499.99 and is available now.

Specifications:

  • 20” Heavy Full Contour with 11 Degree Target Crown and Recessed Muzzle, 1/9 Inch Twist, Salt Bath Nitride Chamber, Bore, & Finish, and Chambered in .17 WSM
  • Fully Functioning Forward Assist
  • Patent Pending Custom Designed 17 WSM Bolt Carrier Group
  • Custom Osprey Defense Gas Piston System
  • Franklin Armory Custom Tuned Trigger
  • TML-12 Handguard
  • Custom .17 WSM 10 Round Magazine
  • MSRP $1,499.99

This Mischaracterization Of The American Redneck

I could not pass this up because I know of no “respectable” redneck that would do this to his or her shotgun. FYI, a great many of these so called “rednecks” are sitting on deeds for several hundred acres of prime land.

Wall Street Rallies Around Rebounding Oil Prices Are You Kidding Me ?

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is an open discussion on the recent media assessment that this week’s stock rally was fueled by a Republican sweep in the midterm elections AND “Rebounding Oil Prices.” So, let’s take a look at part 2 of that statement to see if it even makes sense.

Rebounding oil prices mean that oil prices are heading back up. Because of the relative inelasticity of fuel prices, it means higher costs for manufacturers, distributors and ultimately the consumer who is still wondering what recovery the media and politicians are talking about.

Higher oil prices mean the supply side of the economy has to absorb higher costs. If they are in a competitive business sector, they either have to accept smaller profits or increase prices, which will hit sales. On the consumer side, higher fuel costs especially with old man winter on the doorstep, means less disposable income, which translates to lower capital goods purchases and lower retail sales. Big ticket items, even with 0% interest rates will take a back seat. Prospects for employment are diminished.

So, who benefits in an economy with rising oil prices? Speculators, derivative traders and corporations, who are finding that it is better to apply idle cash or borrowed money, at record low rates, to roll into the stock market in lieu of adding plant and equipment to increase production capacity or achieve efficiencies; after all, they can always have their widget made in China.

I’ve taken the liberty to add a couple of interesting data sets to this discussion. The first is GDP data from 2000 to 2014 (it’s available as far back as 1950) and its trend line. You’ll note that it has a downward slope. Downward sloping GDP trends are an indication that the domestic economy is contracting and not expanding.

Added for clarity: When I suggested the economy was contracting, it was a forward looking statement. The data I presented shows that GDP is growing at a decreasing rate. If the trend is not reversed the economy will, over the longer term, show contraction in real terms (meaning net of inflation).

The second chart is the Balance of Trade data from 2000 to 2014 with its corresponding trend line. Note that it too has a downward slope. This is an indication that we are importing more than we are exporting at an increasing rate.

united-states-gdp-growth

united-states-balance-of-trade

The data presented should prompt you to ask the question… Why are we seeing a stock market at over 17500? The reason is that huge piles of cash (some of it borrowed at near zero interest rates) have nothing to do, so it moves into the market driving stock prices higher. If you are a Wall Streeter, you’re basking in bonuses and Mercedes Benz. The sad reality in all of this is that there is no real economic support for these prices other than the sheer demand for stocks. Stock prices are rising simply because there is nothing else for money to do. You’ll here a lot of B.S. about price earnings ratios and blah, blah, blah; however, the fact remains that there is no real (real is another way of saying economic) support for these levels. When someone is telling you corporate earnings are strong, ask where the earnings are coming from. Is it outsourcing, restructuring and cost cutting, or are they coming from strong sales. You can then draw a meaningful conclusion. So, if you think the stock market rally is an indicator of the strength of the economy, you may want rethink your position.

The submarine community has a famous saying, and I quote: “What comes up must come down, but what goes down does not necessarily have to come back up.”

The new Republican majority in Congress needs to move the recovery out of Wall Street and into Main Street. There are a number of ways in which that can be achieved without adding to systemic risk or hampering the flow of capital.  In the meantime lets not create any more monsters through consolidations – like the banking sector. Let’s put monetary and fiscal policies in place that increase competition and domestic manufacturing. The best way to deal with the national debt is with a growing GDP. They have two years to get it right.

MITCH McCONNELL I BELIEVE IN YOU!

Let us know what you think?

BTW – I was asked about shoot-the-shit rules. A good shoot-the-shit has no rules, you don’t have to support your comments or provide sources. You can switch subjects, express opinions or call somebody a moron. Anything goes!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!

The New Steyr AUG A3 M1 Is Now At Stores

Steyr Arms announced today that it has begun shipping the new multi-configurable M1 variant of the AUG A3 bullpup rifle platform to dealers and distributors. Utilizing an optics attachment platform similar to the rare and much-sought-after AUG A2, the AUG A3 M1 will be available nationwide in a Short-Rail version, a High-Rail version as well as an Integrated-Optic version with either a 1.5X or 3X scope.

The Integrated-Optics version is based on American desire for the scoped special operations AUG SF model. The new M1 optics version has a more traditional AUG scope tube, modernized with the addition of three Picatinny rail sections to accommodate accessories like a close-quarters holographic sight. The top rail has 15 numbered slot positions in two segments and a pair of backup dots at the rearmost portion of the rail. The four-slot rail segment on the right side of the scope is also numbered.

The M1 Integrated-Optics version is exceptionally bright and clear, and its axis is 1.945 inches over the stock comb for a solid cheekweld. The new turret design requires a simple coin or flat screwdriver to make windage and elevation changes. The 1.5X optic comprises of a medium crosshair with an empty, heavy range-finding circle, while the 3X optic is a medium crosshair, heavy circle with a thin internal crosshair.

With 16 numbered slots, the M1 High-Rail version was designed to accommodate the widest range of optic choices, from a high-magnification scope to a short-eye-relief tactical scope mounted at the rear to a holographic red-dot sight coupled in tandem with a secondary multiplier. The High-Rail extends 2.57 inches back from the receiver and sits 0.820 inches over the stock comb.

The M1 Short-Rail version was created for the minimalist, who requires no more than a forward-mounted reflex or longer eye-relief optic mounted on any of the 11 slot positions. The Short Rail ends at the back of the receiver, and its top is a mere 0.435 inches above the comb to employ whatever height mount that the user needs.

The rail and optics platforms on all three AUG A3 M1 versions are easily interchangeable via the three base screws that thread from the underside of the top of the receiver. The receiver was also updated to replace the permanently affixed front sling swivel with a VLTOR Quick-Disconnect Sling Swivel, which makes two-point sling attachment or removal extremely fast and easy, and users of single-point slings can remove the front sling swivel entirely, if they so desire.

Whereas the original release of the AUG A3 offered just two choices with the full-length rail—a traditional Steyr AUG with the integral bolt release, which accepted the superior and virtually indestructible AUG magazines, and a NATO-stocked version that used thinner, yet commonly available STANAG magazines—the introduction of the AUG A3 M1 reintroduces the popular OD Green furniture as a third stock option.

The AUG A3 M1 is built by Steyr Mannlicher-trained gunsmiths in Steyr Arms’ new Bessemer headquarters and manufacturing facility.

Being a bullpup, the AUG A3 M1 boasts overall length of just 28.15 inches, including its 16-inch heavy barrel, making it at least 8 inches shorter than an M4 carbine with a comparable-length barrel. So why register a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR)? The short-stroke gas-piston operation of the AUG runs exceptionally cleaner by nature because all of the operational exhaust gas vents out of the front of the rifle. The AUG’s matching, yet opposed, stainless steel operation and guide rods affixed to the bolt carrier glide effortlessly inside the receiver for unparalleled smoothness in operation as well as exceptional reliability. Dual gas-adjustment settings ensure its operation even with the dirtiest ammunition and in adverse conditions.

The AUG A3 M1 has all the classic features and benefits that established it as the pinnacle of modern rifle design, including expedited disassembly as well as simple conversion to left-hand operation, which requires replacement of the standard bolt with the optional left-eject bolt and swapping the ejection-port cover. It also features a quick-change barrel with a collapsible forward grip.

The AUG A3 M1 includes one translucent polymer 30-round magazine, a cleaning kit that stores in the rifle’s buttstock and an owner’s manual. Also available are 10- and 42-round magazines. Suggested retail is $2,099 for either railed version. The 1.5X and 3X optics equipped versions are available with MSRPs of $2,499 and $2,599, respectively.

Extrema Ratio Introduces The RESOLZA A Touch Of Sardinia Tipo Extrema

You don’t need to read too many of my knife reviews to come away with the impression that I like edged weapons. Regardless of origin, they are the complete utility tool. Whether called upon for defense or just plain work, most blades of competent design will perform what you ask of them. At the top of a short list of my personal favorites is a company located in Prato Italy doing business under the name of Extrema Ratio. They have been producing quality knives for quite some time.

Its new RESOLZA folder, shown above,  is the “coup de grâce” in the art of bringing a classic design into the 21st Century. Classic design, modern day materials and fabrication is Extrema’s forte!

The RESOLZA’s name has its origins in the Latin “rasoria” pronounced with a hard “ra” which means razor. The Resolza or resòrza in Sardinian parlance was the de facto utility folding knife serving as both a defensive weapon and tool for herders and farmers. The traditional resòrza  had a long flowing belly which made it ideal for slicing and a pugnale character to its point. Extrema Ratio has captured that gorgeous look in its RESOLZA.

Reader Question: Does Glass Matter On A Reflex Sight

I have a question / comment from a reader regarding the importance of optical clarity when considering a reflex sight. He raises an interesting question that is rarely discussed. It was inspired by my review of Bushnell’s AR TRS-25.

The beauty of the reflex sight stems from one thing and that is its ability to position a reflected visual aid, the red dot, such that it aligns with the bore regardless of head position; this is what makes shooting with both eyes open possible; hence, increasing the speed of engagement. Other than the robustness of the housing and attachment of the light emitting diode, the single most important consideration is the reflective property of the front lens and that is a function of lens coatings.

Clarity of the glass, although nice to have, is not critical. I learned this from a friend and Master Sargent with the 82nd, an Iraq veteran. He demonstrated the point several years ago, by asking me to lower the front cover on my Aimpoint sight, a technique they used when operating in harsh conditions. So, rather than risking damage to the front lens and loosing use of the M68 sight, operators lowered the front flip cover to protect the optic. A technique that I’ve used frequently for no other reason than to assess any limitations employing it. Because you’re shooting with both eyes open any impairment from not being able to look through the reflex sight is inconsequential. However, glass clarity and resolution are very important when dealing with magnified optics where the operator sights through the optic for targeting and observation.

My point in comparing the Bushnell TRS-25 with the Aimpoint T-1 is not to diminish the T-1’s value or performance. Aimpoint remains the industry standard but you don’t need to break the bank to have access to a level of performance that by all standards will meet 100% of your needs. Even governments have budgetary constraints and must therefore prioritize where dollars are spent. But, optical clarity of a reflex sight should not be the critical element in your selection process.

EBOLA And The Great Quarantine Debate

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic centers around the West African Ebola epidemic and the quarantine debate taking place in this country. The question being decided is this…

Should an individual who has had direct contact with infected person(s) be quarantined for a 21 day period be they symptomatic or not?

In my view, the answer is an unqualified yes, and this is why.

People in the infectious disease business; researchers, clinicians and healthcare workers tend to disagree presenting an argument based on a limited sample, and as statisticians and actuaries will tell you, all samples by default have errors or what we call outliers. An outlier is an event or observation that falls outside the norm. However,  real risk is not from what is known but rather from what we don’t know and the associated probability that an outlier will manifest itself. In fact, outliers is what drives premium prices of insurance policies; this is how insurance companies establish premiums.

Although It is accurate that in the “majority” of cases observed the Ebola virus is transmitted by contact with bodily fluids and that an infected individual is infections when symptoms are present, because data is imperfect, one has to consider outliers. It’s therefore very reasonable to weigh any number of questions. Are there individuals that can transmit the disease without showing symptoms, or are there instances where incubation takes longer than 21 days? Is there a risk that an infected individual, at early stages of incubation, vomit while out and about and a rodent or stray animal comes in contact with that fluid? What then? What happens when that outlier manifests itself in a population center. What happens when an HIV positive individual is exposed to the Ebola virus, does it trigger full AIDS?

From current data, which by the way relies on self reporting,  the later may be remote, but still possible nevertheless. I recall a recent CNN interview in which Wolf Blitzer asked a researcher a similar question to which she responded “ Wolf, yes it is possible, but those our outliers.” I contend that it is those outliers, when considered with the fact that Ebola is 50% – 70% fatal, that constitute the risk. So I applaud Governors Scott, Christi and Cuomo for making responsible management decision in the interest of their constituents.

I’m flabbergasted by individuals like nurse Kaci Hickox, who in my view lacks the maturity and discipline that someone working in the medical field, and more specifically with infectious diseases, should have. She and others like her should clearly understand the risks, and not just with typical cases but with the “outliers,” and the corresponding need for an abundance of caution.

Should we impose a mandatory quarantine for individuals that have had direct contact with an Ebola infected person? Absolutely, twenty-one days is not much to ask. But, on the flipside of this imposition a quarantined individual has every reason to expect they will be treated with dignity and not suffer economic or job loss resulting from their mandatory isolation.

Let us know what you think.

Have A Great Weekend Everybody!

Sniper’s Hide Moves To The Scout Network

AX308MC_940

A Message From Frank Galli:

Sniper’s Hide has Moved to the Scout Network

In case you missed it, earlier in the month Sniper’s Hide has moved the site to the Scout Network.

Contrary to popular belief we did not sell the site, but entered into a deal to host the website over at Scout. In the short term this may seem like a radical move, however the long term plans to grow Sniper’s Hide with the help of Scout will become evident to all.
The Downside of the Move

There are some immediate downsides, however this is strictly short term.  First the website, we are currently working a brand new site that will be launched in the first quarter of 2015.  There is a lot happening on the software side, and much of that work is not active yet.  We understand this and please realize, this is a work in progress.  Nothing is complete, what you see is NOT what you are getting.  We are adding features weekly and will continue to put missing features back. Many have already noticed the changes.

Logging on,

In order to log on for the first time, members must use their email addresses from the original Sniper’s Hide website to recover their password. Passwords did not transfer over. So use the password recovery with your email address to log on before attempting to use your user name.   Once you are logged on, you can then relink your User Name. Many user names are already taken within the network so a modification of your User Name maybe necessary. For example, “Lowlight” was already active on the network so I changed mine too: “SHLowlight” … real simple. Once that is complete you can log on and post under your user name.
Change is Progress,

Understand this is a new server and new network. The old information from Sniper’s Hide was not lost, but it was not moved over.  We had over 3 Million posts on the original site, and we did not lose any of it. However in order to access your old account, posts, or private messages, you need to return to the old site.  The old will remain accessible by changing, .com to .info.  So use snipershide.info to log on there.  The new site is brand new, we are repopulating it with a ton of the best posts, and guys have really stepped up to make it work. We have added a lot of data, for example the reloading depot is much cleaner with a lot of the best loads for you to use.

No, you don’t have to pay,

Many have mistaken the premium content information to mean you now have to pay to access Sniper’s Hide. This is not true, the premium content only pertains to the Online Training. This is the same thing we had before, however with your premium content account you have access to the Online Training, plus all the Scout Content benefits and deals they offer.  Also with a premium content membership you get a subscription to Warrior Magazine.

Searches,

It’s true, you can’t search the New Site for Old Information. You have to use the old site for that. Google is catching up with the changes and has already started relinking the old content and the new content so they will work. This is exactly the same as the change from UBB Threads to vBulletin. They used two different link structures and many forget that it took a while to convert the UBB Links to the vBulletin format. Same thing here, it is already working and you can easily search the site same as before. Use SITE:snipershide.scout.com AND _______ (Search Term) and you will see it works as long as you looking for something that actually exists on the new site.  It’s the difference between search 3 million posts and 10,000 posts. That old data just might not be there, so if you have a question ask.

While the benefits are not readily apparent, believe me when I say, we would not have made this drastic of a move if there was not a long term benefit for all.  In order to grow the sport, we have to open up our reach, and Scout Network puts us right in the center of a very large sports network.  Make no mistake, shooting is a sport. If others see it as mainstream it’s a lot harder to attack as extreme.  We have a plan, a direction and not everything can be discussed at this time, believe us, the plan in place and moving forward.

I understand this is not for everyone, and many can careless about other sports out there. No problem, nobody is saying you have to look. But under the “Warrior” banner, there are a lot of really cools sites being added. I especially enjoy the military history pages.

Sure, we’re asking for a leap of faith, but understand this is the 5th change in the history of Sniper’s Hide. We had just as many complaints about the vBulletin move if not a bunch more. So like that, which took 9 months to change and improve, this will change and improve.

Liberty Ammunition Adds A 10mm Auto To Its Civil Defense Line

Liberty Ammunition has earned a reputation for some of the most accurate and effective defensive ammo and well deserved, I might add. If you haven’t tried their 9mm loads yet you should. The company has just announced a 10mm Auto under its Civil Defense family of ammunition.

The 10mm Auto is ideal for personal defense, tactical use and for hunting. Liberty’s high-performance ammunition delivers approximately twice the velocity, three times the terminal effect, 30% more energy transfer, noticeable reductions in felt recoil, while considerably reducing the weight of all loaded weapons.

In testing at Liberty’s production facility, the Civil Defense 10mm Auto achieved velocities greater than 2,400 FPS, creating 780 FPE. This velocity is nearly double that of standard 10mm ammo. The Civil Defense line of lead-free ammunition features nickel-plated, solid copper projectiles and nickel-plated brass cases. Every round exceeds match-grade quality in performance.

Liberty’s deep cavity, hollow-point projectile is designed to fragment in soft tissue, resulting in a much greater transfer of kinetic energy to the target while providing three times the terminal effects of traditional, lead-based ammo in comparable calibers. Due to the proprietary design of the projectile and its solid copper construction, Civil Defense ammunition also provides exceptional performance on hard targets such as drywall, car doors, auto glass and leather/denim without sacrificing any performance in soft tissue.

Specifications:

10mm Auto

  • Description: Copper Monolithic, Hollow-Point, Fragmenting, Lead-Free, Personal Defense Round
  • Weight: 60 gr.
  • Velocity: >2,400 FPS
  • Kinetic Energy: >780 FPE
  • Accuracy: >2″ @ 25mtrs
  • Terminal Effect: 4 -1/2″ W x 12″ D
  • MSRP (20 rd box): $34.99
