Larry Vickers’ Updated Ammo Requirements

A Quick Message from Larry Vickers…

Ammunition for Students of 2013 Vickers Tactical Classes
Based on the firearm and ammunition hysteria in the market in early 2013, I would like to put out some guidelines for students of my classes as well as information on sourcing ammo. Here goes…

1) Plan ahead; 400 rds. per day is a good rule of thumb for my training classes – that number covers virtually all my curriculum. Your best bet is to shop around far in advance to purchase the ammo you need vs. waiting until the last minute. In addition quality reloads are permitted in my classes (see number 4 below).
2) Many of my drills can be structured for a reduced round count. For instance if you can only get 600 rds. instead of 800 rds. for a 2 day class we can make that work – remember any training is better than no training. I can adjust the drills to meet your ammo supply. My classes have always been quality vs. quantity with a heavy emphasis on accuracy so training won’t suffer with a slightly reduced round count.
3) 22 LR is authorized for classes. I have had students bring rimfire for different reasons before and I would encourage you to come with a 22 caliber long gun or handgun before you skip the class altogether. Understand that rimfire firearms are not as functionally reliable as centerfire weapons so if possible do your homework to see what kind of ammo your rimfire likes best.
4) Factory new ammo is available from
G&R Tactical and remanufactured ammo is available for a slightly discounted price from Everglades Ammunition in Florida. Currently 9mm, .40 and .45 ammo is readily available for Vickers Tactical students with 5.56mm ammo coming on line from Everglades in the May 2013 timeframe (approx.). To order ammo from Everglades contact Stephen Bender at Steve@evergladesammo.com and tell him you are ordering ammo for one of my classes. The discount applies to the ammo needed for the class you are attending; any ammo you buy beyond that will be the normal price.

GLOCK ID Shatters Initial Enrollment Goals of 10,000 Participants.

When Glock Inc. launched GLOCK ID, little did they know that in a relatively short period of time enrollments would far exceed their ambitious goal of 10,000 participants. In response to this overwhelming demand, the company has expanded its pre-launch registration quota to 20,000.

Those who pre-register before the launch date earn the exclusive “Early Adopter” patch and benefit from a head-start on earning points. Within the first week of pre-registration, followers on Twitter began using the hashtag #1of10K, which continued for two weeks. Pre-registrants will still receive an “Early Adopter” patch; however, it will be worth slightly fewer points than the patch awarded to the first 10,000.

GLOCK ID offers members several key components:

  • a virtual gun safe to keep track of range time, cleaning dates and more;
  • training lessons;
  • a community Q&A for peer discussion;
  • an engaging process for earning points and ‘patches’ to rank up and earn GLOCK rewards.

GLOCK ID members have the opportunity to contribute and participate with other GLOCK enthusiasts while earning points, which ultimately lead to GLOCK rewards that can only be earned by interacting with GLOCK ID and its members.

The ranks and rewards structure encourages competition and engagement. By participating in various activities (watching a training video, answering fellow members’ questions, logging time at the range, etc.), members of GLOCK ID can earn patches. Those patches translate into points, which then designate a member’s rank within the community. Finally, those rank levels determine tangible rewards from GLOCK.

By the way, as part of the registration process you have a chance to be entered for a chance to win a recorded personal voicemail message from The Gunny!

Join GLOCK ID now!

How To Loose Control Of Your Child–A Message To Parents

I’m going to take you back at least ten years to 2002. I was engaged in online gaming of a very popular first person shooter game titled SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs. It was published by Zipper Interactive and first released on Aug of 2002. It is the grand daddy of the military style combat games. Part of the games attraction was the ability to connect to a remote site via internet and team with others to form clans. Clans then competed against one another. The feature had an audio component, where if the player wore a headset, he or she was able to communicate with other clan members. I used that option four or five times because it became an incredible learning experience, which ultimately prompted me to communicate my concerns to the FBI.

During the course of that experience, I listened to a 13 year old girl offer herself in order to be admitted into a specific clan. I heard individuals claiming to be 15 and in school setting up drug deals. Talk about a cesspool!

Well, you’ll be please to know that the situation has become much worse. In 2002, your child had a play station and more than likely a desktop PC; at least he or she had to stay at home to use them. Today, that child has an iPhone, iPad or other device that allows great mobility and unrestrained access to the internet.

Folks, when you made a decision to have children you failed to accept the responsibility that comes with that choice; preferring to be challenged by your own professional development and career. In lieu of giving your kids of your valuable time, you supplied them with PlayStations, XBOX, iPhones, iPads, notebook PCs. How awesome is that, look at how I’ve empowered my children!

Well mom and dad what you’ve done is turn loose your babe in a jungle. Have you noticed how much less time they’re demanding of you? Have you noticed that there are fewer kids coming over just to horse around? Have you noticed that they lost an interest in exercise? Have you noticed that they are less skilled at face-to-face interpersonal relations and problem resolution? I’ll stop here because I think you get the message.

As parents, you need to rethink your approach to parenting and recognize that it is going to take much more time and effort on your part. There is no substitute for mom and dad, and none for interpersonal interaction. Isolating your child electronically or physically is a recipe for disaster; resulting in more Adam Lanza(s). It’s not guns that are killing your children, it’s you.

Navy SEAL, Chris Kyle and Friend Murdered

Former Navy Seal, Chris Kyle, 38 and a close friend Chad Littlefield, age 35, were murdered Saturday afternoon at a gun range in Erath County, TX.  WFAA-TV, out of Dallas Fort Worth, reported that both men were slain at Rough Creek Lodge, 53 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The suspect Eddie Ray Routh, a former U.S. Marine was captured Saturday night and arraigned on one count of capital murder and two counts of murder. Bond was set at $3 million. Routh is reported as suffering from PTSD. Kyle helped found FITCO Cares Foundation, an organization that helps treat veterans with PTSD and that’s what they were said to be doing at the range on that day.

Kyle, former Navy Seal sniper and author of the best-selling book “American Sniper,” had more than 150 confirmed kills during his military services; making him one of the most successful snipers in U.S. military history.

Chris was a gregarious and modest man who served his country with pride and dignity. Kyle was born in Odessa, Texas and is survived by his wife and two children. If anyone on the face of this earth is undeserving of such a fate it was Chris. A highly decorated sailor, family man and entrepreneur. We are all shocked by this tragic news and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife and children, colleagues and shipmates.

R.I.P. Chris. Rest Your Oars.

Steyr’s AUG/A3 SA 5.56 x 45

I had a great visit with the folks from Steyr while at SHOT SHOW 2013, in Las Vegas. I’m excited about their rendition of the new AUG bullpup carbine, the AUG/A3.

The AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr, or universal army rifle)  design dates back to the 70’s. The carbine was designed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch now called Steyr Mannlicher GmbH & Co KG. Its original design was visionary in that it incorporates many of the features now sought after by the services. Because of its compactness, the AUG is ideally suited for CQB/CQC or mounted operations. It featured interchangeable barrel assemblies, which allowed the operator to transition from a 13.8 inch barrel up to 24.4 inch barrel suited for a designated marksman or light machine gun. The AUG was magazine fed featuring a polymer 30 round magazine. The bullpup design meant that the overall length could be kept to a minimum while still retaining the barrel length needed to provide effective muzzle velocities. The AUG was available in 1:9 and 1:7 twist to accommodate SS109/M855, M193 and the SS109 NATO ammunition. Interestingly enough its commercial success was not as impressive as it should have been and it became a cult rifle very much like SAAB automobiles. Other features included full ambidextrous controls, an adjustable gas piston operating system and a pull-through trigger that eliminates the need for a selector switch. Integrated with the receiver was 1.5x optic manufactured by Swarosvik Optik. From a technical perspective, the AUG was far superior to the M16/M4 family of rifles yet it was never successful in displacing either the M16 or M4. It’s failure to achieve full potential revolved around two subtle points, none of which I consider valid from a decision making point. First, the receiver was not compatible with the M16/M4 magazine architecture. Secondly, it lacked the all important Picatinny rail system; thus, limiting the choices of accessories that could be mounted. Steyr’s AUG suffered a further setback with the passage of the 1989 Importation Ban, and the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), also called the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, subtitled Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which banned the importation of a number of semiautomatic carbines, including the AUG, on the basis of an ambiguous and arbitrary “sporting use” concept.

Since then, Steyr has made a number of changes, the more noticeable being the addition of Picatinny rails at the 12 o’clock and removable 45 degree offset rails at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. Steyr has also shifted production to the United States by teaming with Sabre-Defence. The AUG reincarnation comes to us in the form of the AUG/A3 SA 5.56 x 45.

P1000564

If you’ve ever owned or fired the AUG, you will love the AUG/A3 SA it is a viable alternative to another M16/M4 clone. The AUG/A3 deserves your serious consideration.

Parabellum Armament’s LLC. AKARS (AK Adaptive Rail System)

By: Sal Palma

image

When Parabellum Armament, LLC. announced the AKARS (AK Adaptive Rail System) in the fall of 2012, I was somewhat skeptical. I’ve accumulated a lot of experience, mostly bad, over the years looking for an effective way to mount a Picatinny rail along the bore axis on an AK47. I tried a number of approaches but none provided a solid mounting option with repeatable and consistent results; needless to say, I approached Parabellum’s product with a dose of healthy skepticism.

I decided to move forward with the project after meeting Rick Veal, one of Parabellum’s founders. Rick impressed me as a straight up guy who knew his subject matter well. I went ahead and tracked one down – by the way, these are not easy to come by – then reached out to my buddy, the Mad Russian, who was all too eager to volunteer his Bulgarian, milled receiver AK47 as a test bed.

The AKARS arrived a couple of weeks ago, so first things first; I sat down and read the instruction leaflet.

Installation of the AKARS was very straightforward. After clearing the weapon, the first thing you’ll need to do is remove the receiver cover and recoil spring assembly.

Next, you’ll want to remove the rear sight from the rear sight block. To do that, you’ll need a small flat head screwdriver. Insert the tool in the slot on the sight so that you are directly above the sight’s retaining spring. The spring provides tensioning of the sight. You’ll need to use some force; with the proper amount of pressure, you’ll feel the spring compress. This is precisely what you want. While maintaining downward force, pull up and back on the rear sight until it comes away from the sight block. Note that the spring remains in position and should be left alone. Now you’re ready to install the AKARS.

The AKARS comes packaged with one rail assembly, a receiver cover, two Allen wrenches and a roll pin.

One end of the AKARS attaches to the rear sight block on the AK; this is where you want to start you installation. Begin by removing a small set screw followed by the pivot pin that comes with the rail assembly.

Now align the AKARS attachment point with that of the rear sighimaget block. You will need to press down on the AKARS to overcome the spring tension. The best way to do that is by holding the AKARS perpendicular to the rear sight block as you press down. It takes some force to successfully compress the sight tensioning spring. When you’ve overcome the spring tension, the holes are aligned; now insert the pivot pin and gently tap it in. The pin is not keyed so you can insert it from either the left or right side.

You’ve just completed all of the “difficult” parts in the installation process, and your installation will now look like Figure 1. on the top left. Next you’ll be attaching the receiver cover to the rail assembly.

The receiver cover has a keyed attachment point consisting of two pins set in a block. The block sits on the receiver cover, which is slotted to allow for front to back movement of the mounting block.imageYou’re in the homestretch now.

Next, install recoil spring assembly so that you’re ready for Parabellum’s receiver cover.

Insert the receiver cover indexing pins in the corresponding holes on the rail assembly; now seat and install the receiver cover on the weapon’s receiver. The receiver cover will self-align with the rail assembly and the weapon.

Your final step will be to tighten the set screw on the rail assembly followed by the two hex screws on the receiver cover. Feel free to use blue Loctite. You’re done!image

The process from start to finish, including reading the instructions was 15 minutes.

Fit and finish are excellent considering its mounting to an AK47. There is so much variability from one AK47 to another that it’s next to impossible to design anything around an AK with consistency.

The only fit and finish issue I experienced with the AKARS was between the AKARS’ receiver cover and the safety actuating lever.

image

Figure 2. , on the right, shows that on my test weapon, the safety lever could not be fully engaged because of a dimensional problem between the receiver cover and the safety lever. This was a very simple issue to resolve and I ended up grinding down the safety actuating lever just a few thousands to resolve the problem.

image With a grinding wheel or Dremel tool you’re looking at 2 minutes worth of work, tops, with a steady hand.

What do you gain by installing Parabellum’s AKARS? You get the flexibility of mounting any Picatinny compatible optic available on the market. As part of my review, I went through magnified optics, Aimpoint, EOTech and mini red dot sights; all worked extremely well.

As part of my testing, I removed and reinstalled the optics, which I checked against a reference zeroed laser pointer. Sight alignment was maintained in all but one case. I then removed and reinstalled the receiver cover a number of times with no loss of zero.

Throughout my testing I encountered only one instance when sight alignment was noticeably off and that was caused by a problem with the sight mount itself and not the AKARS.

I did not test fire the weapon to identify the existence of any anomalies resulting from recoil – I was caught flatfooted with the ammo scarcity – but as soon as I get to the range I’ll send a few rounds down range to see what affect, if any, recoil has on sight alignment.

Updated 7 Feb 2013:

After securing ammunition (this ammo situation is amazing to put it mildly), I fired the test platform to assess return to zero and any changes to point of impact resulting from recoil. Parabellum’s AKARS performed brilliantly no problems with return to zero or holding zero under live fire.

After spending a considerable amount of time with Parabellum’s AKARS, I have no reservations. You couldn’t ask for a more thorough design. Quality too was superb. With a retail price of $129.99 it’s quite a bargain. However, keep in mind there is a considerable amount of variability AK to AK but Parabellum’s design does everything humanly possible to account and correct for that.

If you are AK centric the AKARS is a must have!

MARS From Parabellum Armament At SHOT SHOW 2013

Parabellum Armament Company, LLC are the folks that brought you the highly successful AKARS or AK Adaptive Rail System. They’ve recently introduced, at SHOT Show 2013, a new accessory designated MARS for the AK platform. MARS is a lever actuator that attaches to the AK’s magazine release and extends back to the weapon’s grip. MARS enables the operator to release the magazine using the thumb; thus, enhancing safety and operator comfort. I had an opportunity to use it and examine it closely, and frankly I couldn’t think of running an AK without it!

Although still designated a prototype MARS should be available by June 2013 at ±$50. The production model will have some minor refinements, like a slightly longer lever to accommodate short stubby hands like mine.

If you are AK centric, MARS is a must have!

U.S. Special Forces (SOF) To Train Mexican Military and Law Enforcement.

downloadBlackwater International Newsletter called my attention to an article published by the Arizona Star, “Special forces create new command to train Mexican troops”, 18 Jan 2013.

The hope is that the proposed military assistance will help Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto establish a military force to focus on drug-criminal cartels. According to Mexican officials, warring drug gangs have killed at least 70,000 people between 2006 and 2012. The very same violent influence that contributes to an estimated 60% of all U.S. gun related violence.

The program will be based at the U.S. Northern Command in Colorado. Special Operations Command – North plans to accomplish this mission by building on existing commando programs with the Mexican Government. A noble effort no doubt. However, given Mexico’s state of affairs and the influence that drug cartels have in and around Mexico it’s likely that we will be training  soldiers for the cartels by proxy.

Tells us what you think.

What’s Up In February…

SHOT SHOW gets better every year with increasing participation and a veritable cornucopia of innovation, so we are far from complete with SHOT SHOW 2013 coverage, which will feature an excellent photo gallery.

I’ll also have a couple of reviews on interesting new products with high utility. Economists define utility as the total satisfaction received from consuming a good or service; one in particular is high on utility for me.

Sharpener

Knife sharpening is an art form, and be completely assured that many a’ blade have been ruined through careless or inexperienced sharpening. The folks at WorkSharp know this, so they’ve introduced the Guided Field Sharpener. It’s high on features, quality and design, and I’m sure it will be high in utility for many of you.

We’re also finalizing arrangements to give you an inside look at some high end Image Intensified technology that I know  you’ll enjoy.

So, stay with us and keep sharing your questions and comments…

FOG HORN’s Jackass Of The Year Award!

dickersonFor good to exist there must be evil, so it follows that New York Times’ Man of The Year must have an antithesis. For that reason, we created FOG HORN’s Jackass Of The Year.

This year that distinction goes to  John Frederick Dickerson, an America Journalist. He is chief political correspondent for Slate magazine and political director of CBS News. Before joining Slate, he covered politics for Time magazine for 12 years, including the last four as White House correspondent.

Mr. Dickerson’s “Go For The Throat” has earned him a position on our jackass of the year roll.

“…Obama’s only remaining option is to pulverize. Whether he succeeds in passing legislation or not, given his ambitions, his goal should be to delegitimize his opponents. Through a series of clarifying fights over controversial issues, he can force Republicans to either side with their coalition’s most extreme elements or cause a rift in the party that will leave it, at least temporarily, in disarray…”

John Frederick Dickerson is the same political luminary and poet laureate  who tweets…

John Dickerson@jdickerson Your bio says you’re a Christian. Me too! Glad it’s not the same church. RT @sage80_wanker: @jdickerson How does obama’s feces taste?

Mr. Dickerson, the United States of America, has had a two party system, informally, since 1789 becoming a fact of political life in 1828 with the election of Andrew Jackson. Defining or transforming political figures are those who in the face of adversity become a catalyst for unison; bridging the gaps between ideologies and needs for the common good. No one wins by delegitimizing or cutting the throat of their opposition, it has to be a win-win. But, I respectfully withdraw my last in light of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Joseph Stalin.

Now, you may be quite content goose-stepping in tight leather short-shorts but I’ll pass!

Quite candidly, the only person with first hand knowledge on President Obama’s feces is you sir. Perhaps your next verbose article will describe its bouquet and texture, or maybe a suggestion of accompaniment – red or white wine.

I sincerely hope that President Obama has better council because you sir have given new meaning to  John K. Galbraith’s humorous quotation:

“If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.”

The Wall Street Journal’s John R. Lott Speaks Out About “Assault” Weapons…

nraLife

The Facts About Assault Weapons and Crime

(From The Wall Street Journal)

By JOHN R. LOTT JR.

Warning about “weapons designed for the theater of war,” President Obama on Wednesday called for immediate action on a new Federal Assault Weapons Ban. He said that “more of our fellow Americans might still be alive” if the original assault weapons ban, passed in 1994, had not expired in 2004. Last month, in the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) promised to introduce an updated version of the ban. She too warned of the threat posed by “military weapons.”

After the nightmare of Newtown, their concern is understandable. Yet despite being at the center of the gun-control debate for decades, neither President Obama nor Ms. Feinstein (the author of the 1994 legislation) seems to understand the leading research on the effects of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. In addition, they continue to mislabel the weapons they seek to ban.

Ms. Feinstein points to two studies by criminology professors Chris Koper and Jeff Roth for the National Institute of Justice to back up her contention that the ban reduced crime. She claims that their first study in 1997 showed that the ban decreased “total gun murders.” In fact, the authors wrote: “the evidence is not strong enough for us to conclude that there was any meaningful effect (i.e., that the effect was different from zero).”

Messrs. Koper and Roth suggested that after the ban had been in effect for more years it might be possible to find a benefit. Seven years later, in 2004, they published a follow-up study for the National Institute of Justice with fellow criminologist Dan Woods that concluded, “we cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence.”

Moreover, none of the weapons banned under the 1994 legislation or the updated version are “military” weapons. The killer in Newtown used a Bushmaster .223. This weapon bears a cosmetic resemblance to the M-16, which has been used by the U.S. military since the Vietnam War. The call has frequently been made that there is “no reason” for such “military-style weapons” to be available to civilians.

image

Getty Images                     Sen. Dianne Feinstein

Yes, the Bushmaster and the AK-47 are “military-style weapons.” But the key word is “style”—they are similar to military guns in their cosmetics, not in the way they operate. The guns covered by the original were not the fully automatic machine guns used by the military, but semiautomatic versions of those guns.

The civilian version of the Bushmaster uses essentially the same sorts of bullets as small game-hunting rifles, fires at the same rapidity (one bullet per pull of the trigger), and does the same damage. The civilian version of the AK-47 is similar, though it fires a much larger bullet—.30 inches in diameter, as opposed to the .223 inch rounds used by the Bushmaster. No self-respecting military in the world would use the civilian version of these guns.

A common question is: “Why do people need a semiautomatic Bushmaster to go out and kill deer?” The answer is simple: It is a hunting rifle. It has just been made to look like a military weapon.

But the point isn’t to help hunters. Semiautomatic weapons also protect people and save lives. Single-shot rifles that require you to physically reload the gun may not do people a lot of good when they are facing multiple criminals or when their first shot misses or fails to stop an attacker.

Since the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired in September 2004, murder and overall violent-crime rates have fallen. In 2003, the last full year before the law expired, the U.S. murder rate was 5.7 per 100,000 people, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report. By 2011, the murder rate fell to 4.7 per 100,000 people. One should also bear in mind that just 2.6% of all murders are committed using any type of rifle.

The large-capacity ammunition magazines used by some of these killers are also misunderstood. The common perception that so-called “assault weapons” can hold larger magazines than hunting rifles is simply wrong. Any gun that can hold a magazine can hold one of any size. That is true for handguns as well as rifles. A magazine, which is basically a metal box with a spring, is trivially easy to make and virtually impossible to stop criminals from obtaining. The 1994 legislation banned magazines holding more than 10 bullets yet had no effect on crime rates.

Ms. Feinstein’s new proposal also calls for gun registration, and the reasoning is straightforward: If a gun has been left at a crime scene and it was registered to the person who committed the crime, the registry will link the crime gun back to the criminal.

Nice logic, but in reality it hardly ever works that way. Guns are very rarely left behind at a crime scene. When they are, they’re usually stolen or unregistered. Criminals are not stupid enough to leave behind guns that are registered to them. Even in the few cases where registered guns are left at crime scenes, it is usually because the criminal has been seriously injured or killed, so these crimes would have been solved even without registration.

Canada recently got rid of its costly “long-gun” registry for rifles in part because the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Chiefs of Police could not provide a single example in which tracing was of more than peripheral importance in solving a gun murder.

If we finally want to deal seriously with multiple-victim public shootings, it’s time that we acknowledge a common feature of these attacks: With just a single exception, the attack in Tucson last year, every public shooting in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed since at least 1950 has occurred in a place where citizens are not allowed to carry their own firearms. Had some citizens been armed, they might have been able to stop the killings before the police got to the scene. In the Newtown attack, it took police 20 minutes to arrive at the school after the first calls for help.

The Bushmaster, like any gun, is indeed very dangerous, but it is not a weapon “designed for the theater of war.” Banning assault weapons will not make Americans safer.

Armalite’s Redesigned AR-30 the AR-30A1

Armalite, has done a superb job of recreating an already top performer, its well established, AR-30. The new version, designated AR-30A1, offers a number of features absent in its predecessor:

  • Muzzle brake threads on the end of the barrels employ threads that are standard for the sound suppressor industry (5/8 x 24 for the 300 Win Mag and 3/4 x 24 for the 338 Lapua).  So, many sound suppressors can be screwed directly onto the barrel without the need for an adaptor.
  • The long, 26” barrel in the .338 Lapua enhances muzzle velocity, flatness of trajectory, and terminal ballistics.  The 24” barrel of the .300 Win Mag balances ballistic performance with portability.
  • Optional 1913 rails will support a variety of add-on accessories.
  • A tough, through-hardened receiver means reduced wear and increased smoothness.
  • The bolt-mounted safety mechanism locks the firing pin to the rear.  This design is stronger and more secure than a sear or trigger blocking safety because it directly blocks the firing pin itself.
  • The metal cheekpiece is very durable and the elastomeric cheekpiece pad provides a comfortable shooter interface in all weather conditions.
  • The cheekpiece supports contain integral cleaning rod guides that prevent damage to the bore due to inadequate cleaning rod control.
  • Multiple sling installation locations allow simultaneous use of a sling and a bipod.  And the rear sling swivel can be moved to either the left or right side.
  • To provide very compact transportation, the entire buttstock assembly can be quickly and easily removed with only one allen wrench.
  • The standard and target buttstocks are interchangeable on any receiver with use of only one allen wrench.
  • Military grade anodizing and phosphating finishes enhance durability and corrosion resistance.

The AR-30A1 is available in two calibers, 338 Lapua or 300 Win Mag.

875 Yard Hit – Media Day

I have to admit that making an 875 yard hit with a 20+ mile per hour 9 o’clock wind with the Ashbury International Super Sport .375 Cheytac – XLR was the highlight of my day

Ashbury’s Super Sport .375 Cheytac-XLR needed a mere 3/4 mil push left to attain that delicious ding on steel. I was extremely impressed with rifle’s balance. Felt recoil was minimal; somewhere between a .308 Winchester and 300 WinMag.

Kudos to the Ashbury Team on an exceptional precision rifle!

Ted Nugent Delights Media At SHOT 2013–We The Sheepel.

Ardent Second Amendment supporter, and never to be outdone Ted Nugent, reminded all at his press conference that we are all in this together. If we are to succeed in preserving the Founder’s vision for future generations we must work together, and in concert, with NSSF and the NRA. Outdoor media outlets and professionals must use the power of the printed word to inform and dismantle the liberal-media’s campaign of misinformation.

Optimisim Remains Strong In The Face Of Stormy Seas.

SHOT 2013SHOT Show 2013, held annually in Las Vegas, is the premier outdoors and shooting sports trade show in the world. Last year, SHOT Show contributed $60 million to the depressed Las Vegas economy, and there are signs that 2013’s event will do even more.

SHOT is attended by manufacturers, suppliers and retailers ranging from Wal-Mart to small businesses; they share one thing in common, much of their firearm revenue stream is closely linked to the sale, service and support of modern semi-automatic rifles and accessories. I met with a number of manufacturers who are beginning to think twice about risking capital to improve their plant capacity and hiring, in the face of the current administration’s promise to implement weapon bans. They, as I, are convinced there is little interest in protecting Second Amendment rights at the White House and Democratically controlled Senate.

Many of these entrepreneurs are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who’s entire lives are invested in their businesses. These men and women returned to an economy ravished by the excesses of Bank of America, Bear Stern, Lehman Brothers, Merril Lynch, AIG and others to build businesses that became industry leaders, with a global presence. They’ve faced credit crunches, oppressive ITAR regulations that keep them from competing globally, and are now faced with a hostile Executive Branch and Senate bent on slaying imaginary dragons.

In spite of recent events, the industry and Second Amendment supporters are drawing a line in the sand. In their minds there are no illusions. The fight is on!

SHOT SHOW 2013 – Media Day A Huge Success In Spite Blistering Weather.

images-4_thumb.jpgSHOT Show’s Media Day is an opportunity for members of the media to put their hands on many of the new offerings and send a little lead down range. This year’s event was plagued by unseasonably low temperatures and a good 20 m.p.h. wind driving temperatures to below freezing. Vendors in attendance deserve special recognition. They had folks on site since 6:00 a.m. and I have to believe some suffered hypothermia.

In spite of inclement weather, the event was a major success. The talk of the town was the IWI tent where we had an opportunity to test fire the Tavor. I’ll have much more to say about this exceptional rifle. KRISS was also at the top of the list. You’ll love what KRISS has done to improve its Vector product line. Precision rifles were also well represented by Ashbury International, HK, SIG, Remington and Beretta.

Five Point Plan For The Coming Gun Control Battle.

nelsonmap

  1. Take out your checkbooks and make meaningful donations to the NRA. They will need it!
  2. Mobilize! Simply making You Tube videos and tweets won’t help. Start at a local level, your mayors and state officials – several of them have gone on record and refuse to enforce immigration laws. They can do the same thing with firearm bans. Insist that your chief law enforcement officer take on gangs.
  3. Ask your governors to create free enterprise zones.
  4. Work with NSSF to send a loud and clear message to Senate Majority Leader , Harry Reid, that his home state of Nevada won’t see another SHOT SHOW if he supports any legislation infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens.
  5. Members of the House have two year term limits and many are up for reelection in 2014. Make your voice heard at their level. Include your Senators as well

Remember that the only thing empty barrels do is make noise. We are not going to win this by complaining. The opposition’s intents are clear. We are not 300 Spartans, we are millions of gun owners and law abiding citizens.

“ There is no retreat. There is no surrender. Tonight we dine in hell”

The U.S. Army Will Use LOMAH To Improve Soldier Marksmanship.

LOMAH TargetLocation of hit and miss or LOMAH has successfully completed acceptance testing conducted at Fort Benning, GA and Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

LOMAH was developed by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. PEOSTRI describes the technology as a projectile detection targetry system designed to support basic rifle marksmanship training by tracking rounds fired on or near targets.

Using acoustic sensors, the system detects hits or misses on or within a 2m radius of a target, and transmits the results to an Android-based tablet at the firing point, automatically triangulating the shot group to deliver corrective data to the shooter.

Suited for advanced rifle marksmanship, the system is primarily designed for both the M16 rifle and the M4 carbine featuring iron sights, back-up iron sights, close-combat optic, as well as advanced combat optical gun sights.

My first impression was, “okay, cant you just observe an on target hit when the target drops?” However, LOMAH appears to provide visual point of impact data back to the shooter so he or she can correct fire or make elevation and wind corrections. I’d like to check it out  with some of my own live fire. Let’s see if I can make that happen, so I’ll leave it as “Pretty Cool Idea.”

HK Adds MR762A1 Long Rifle Package (LRP) for 2013.

136

Taking an essentially standard MR762A1 (caliber 7.62 x 51 mm NATO) semi-automatic rifle, Heckler & Koch USA turns it into a more effective precision rifle by an astute addition of the right optics and accessories. A Leupold 3-9VX-R Patrol 3-9 x 40 mm scope and mount, HK G28 adjustable cheekpiece buttstock, and LaRue Tactical BRM-S bipod are the primary add-ons that make the MR762A1 Long Rifle Package (LRP) more than a sum of parts.

A semi-automatic rifle originally developed from the fully automatic HK417, the MR762A1 LRP employs the same HK proprietary gas piston operating system found on current HK rifles and carbines, using a “pusher” rod in place of the gas tube normally found in AR15/M16/M4-style firearms.

This method of operation virtually eliminates malfunctions that are common to direct impingement gas systems since hot carbon fouling and waste gases do not enter the receiver area. This is the same key feature critical to the success of the current generation of HK rifles used by leading military and law enforcement customers.

The MR762A1 LRP uses a barrel produced by Heckler & Koch’s famous cold hammer forging process. The highest quality steel is used in this manufacturing

process, producing a long-life barrel that provides superior performance with minimal degradation of accuracy and muzzle velocity after prolonged use. The barrels are manufactured in Germany and finished in the USA.

The MR762A1 used in the “Long Rifle Package” is being produced with the same commitment to quality as German-made HK firearms. By using joint U.S./ German manufacturing, Heckler & Koch leverages the relative strengths of two continents to make the preeminent AR-type firearms, combining the design innovations of the USA and Germany into superior products.

Additional accessories and add-ons for the LRP variant of the MR762A1 include an ERGO Pistol Grip from Falcon Industries, the same Blue Force Gear sling used on the HK M27 IAR supplied to the USMC, and an OTIS cleaning kit. The rifle package, complete with one 20 and one 10-round magazine is shipped ready to use with the scope attached in a compact 42-inch Model 1720 Pelican case.

The MR762A1 LRP has all the features sought by civilian precision shooters as well as law enforcement organizations seeking a basic and lighter weight alternative to the HK G28 series of designated marksman rifles.

HK Adds The New HK45 Tactical To Its 2013 Lineup.

HK TacticalOriginally developed for the U.S. military’s next generation handgun competition, the new HK45 “Tactical” comes standard with a threaded barrel and three-dot tritium night sights.

With a choice of three frame colors (black, tan, or green), the full-size HK45 Tactical (HK45T) model uses an ergonomic grip design that includes changeable backstraps together with molded finger grooves for optimum shooting. And like all HK45 pistols (compact, full-size, Tactical models), they’re made at HK’s American manufacturing facility using American and German components.

The HK45 Tactical has a proprietary internal mechanical recoil reduction system that employs a flat recoil spring in tandem with a polymer bushing sleeve to reduce the recoil forces effecting the operator and the weapon, improving shooter control during rapid firing and prolonging component service life. An “O-ring” on the threaded barrel means better slide-to-barrel lockup and enhanced accuracy.

The HK45T can be converted to nine different kinds of trigger firing modes including HK’s enhanced double action only “LEM” (Law Enforcement Modification) mode. The HK45T is well-suited for military, law enforcement, security use, and civilian sport shooting.

NavELite Partners with HZO Adding WaterBlock™ Technology to NavELite Compasses.

NavELite, makers of a patented backlit magnetic compass, has signed an agreement with HzO, Inc., a provider of a patented, award winning WaterBlock™ technology used to protect electronics from damage due to moisture, water and small debris.

The newly formed partnership will allow NavELite to produce their wrist-worn, back-lit magnetic compasses with non-toxic coating applied through a vacuum deposition process to prevent water damage. HzO’s proprietary technology protects and seals the unit with a uniform film application without changing the compass appearance or weight. The WaterBlock™ is applied to the internal assemblies, wrapping the components in a protective, transparent, microscopically thin film layer.

Pikes Peak NavELite and HzO are developing a wrist-worn WaterBlocked compass based on customers’ demand for a compass that can withstand heavy humidity and the occasional submersion in water. In early testing, the WaterBlock™ compass EL panels not only lit after submersion but worked while submerged. The new compass will also feature the HzO embossed logo on the wrist strap of all WaterBlocked wrist-worn compasses. Other future projects for the new partners include adding HzO highlights to NavELite’s ongoing mobile application projects. The new WaterBlocked compasses will be arriving in 2013.

“This cutting-edge WaterBlock™ technology will benefit the men and women of the U.S. military, in addition to consumers throughout the world who use our compass for navigational purposes – often in extreme conditions – when survival counts,” said Andrew Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of NavELite.
