New Blog Project For 2014 –The Cloud

Regular readers know that I’ve been very vocal about strict compartmentalization of intelligence data. I’ve often compared it to building a ship with only one compartment, where a single hull breech results in the sinking of a vessel vs. a ship with several compartments isolated by watertight bulkheads; the same holds true with sensitive intelligence information. My position, which is shared by many in industry as well as the military and intelligence communities is supported by the recent Edward Snowden fiasco – “so much for cross-domain security.”

The concept of centralized data bases has been floating around for well over 30 years, with the occasional foray into distributed systems to eliminate single points of failure, is now personified by the concept of “cloud computing”. When distributed databases were in vogue, data base administrators soon recognized there were data inconsistencies from system to system that had to be reconciled or in technical parlance “normalized.” So, the concept of a centrally housed and administered data base is attractive from an administrative point of view. Other than a central data respository, cloud computing provides central resources. The concept offers two significant benefits. First it establishes a “virtual” central data repository. Secondly, computing resources can be shared and accessed across all devices authorized by the cloud. The end result is greater data accuracy , easier administration and end-user computing appliances can be carried in the user’s pocket.

Cloud computing, has been successfully socialized by Apple with the iPhone & iCloud concept; Google, with their Google Drive; and, Microsoft with the Skydrive. All of these services offer the subscriber large amounts of storage at no charge with a limitless capacity to expand that storage at a nominal cost. They also offer subscriptions to computing resources, for example Microsoft’s Office Suite – all very convenient but fraught with very serious security issues.

These same concepts have extended out to the military and intelligence communities who are moving full speed ahead under the false notion – hopefully now shattered – of cross-domain security. The business case for cloud computing is there but has it been adequately tested against intangibles like risk? At the government’s level the indication seems to be that deployment will be limited to e-mail services and office related tasks; however, anyone that has ever been involved with ELINT work knows that a very clear picture can sometimes be obtained from “routine” correspondence or office productivity byproducts like Spreadsheets and Power Points. Nothing is more revealing in western culture than a departmental budget. So, in 2014 I will be adding content, from time to time, designed to provide a higher level of awareness and the risks associated  with cloud technologies.

The Clouds in place today have Terabytes of capacity, and your smart devices have Gigabytes of capacity. On the aggregate, it creates a massive opportunity for exploitation so the challenges associated with maintaining data integrity and data security are enormous. Knowing something beyond the iCloud will help you understand and function in this technical environment as a non-technician.

Holiday Gift Giving Idea For America’s Enterprise

P1000198

Every year, around this time of the year, I publish a list of 10 items that I consider to be exceptional stocking stuffers for the outdoor minded individuals. They are not all expensive, and my selection revolves around design, function, utility and commitment to excellence. One such item is the luminAid® solar powered emergency light. It costs $19.99 in unit one quantity and has more uses than you can shake a stick at. I’ve been trying to break one for over 3 months with no success.

This time of the year sees many of America’s largest global companies purchasing leather bound appointment books or diaries emblazoned with gold corporate logos, or elaborate paperweights to present as gifts to their customers, which is fine, I suppose, if you want to signal your customer that you’ve been freeze dried for the last 20 years or you’re Jewish.

So here it is Corporate America, this is the biggest tip since your last inside trade. Give your customer a luminAid for Christmas. LuminAid will customize the light with your corporate logos and in quantities you’ll bring it in under $20. You’ll also be giving your customer something they’ll be able to use for a lifetime; be it camping or to get them through a natural disaster.

This is luminAid’s web site where you can find out more about the product and its founders.

Daniel Defense Launches The AR15 Lite Rail II

Possibly one of the most innovative and relevant firearms manufacturer in the country is Daniel Defense, located in Black Creek, GA. The company has a slew of “first in kind” achievements under its belt; a tradition that it continues with the latest introduction of the Lite Rail II.

Daniel_Defense_Lite_Rail_II

The company describes its Lite Rail II as the next generation of Lite Rail systems. The improved design enhances the rail’s structural integrity, improves functionality, aesthetics and ease of installation without compromising its best-known attributes, one of which being the lightest rail system on the market.  Enhanced features include machining from one piece aluminum rail which replaces their previous two piece welded design, the company’s patented Bolt-Up System™, requiring only 4 bolts instead of 6, with tabs that aid in alignment to the upper receiver during installation.  Front and Rear Sling Swivel Attachment Points are integrated into both the left and right side rails and are designed to limit the swivel’s rotation.

Marty Daniel, President and CEO puts it this way: “Once we develop and deploy a new product, we begin discussing how we can make an already superior product even better, the AR15 Lite Rail II is the product of innovative thought and a very talented team of engineers. In the end, we made it even Lighter, Stronger, Better…

The AR15 Lite Rail II is available in multiple lengths and variations, including: AR15 Lite Rail II 7.0, 9.0, 9.5 FSP, 10.0, 12.0, 12.0 FSP, 12.0 FSPM and 14.0. While most options are available now, the AR15 Lite Rail II 12.0 FSPM and 14.0 will be available in Q1, 2014.

Options For Your Now Disenfranchised Contour Camera

By now, Contour Camera owners should know that Contour has gone out of business. Having been outspent and out marketed by GoPro seems to be the underlying reason for the company’s demise. Founded in 2004 by Marc Barros and Jason Green in Washington State; it was a venture started when two guys decided to strap a camera on to their ski helmet. The idea called point of vision videography enabled the two entrepreneurs  to  capture skiing action footage. From the outset, the young startup faced stiff competition from GoPro who launched a Beta version of their POV camera right about the same time frame. To make matters worse, the point-of-view or POV market captured Sony’s attention in 2011 leading to Sony’s introduction of the HDR-AS15 action camera. With stiff well capitalized competitors, Contour ended up closing its doors and laying off 60 employees. They are no more.

What originally attracted me to Contour was it’s slim and compact form factor along with its ease of use. Contour gained considerable popularity with outdoorsmen, athletes and adventurers for precisely the same reasons it interested me. The camera has been used to capture video footage in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and it continues to be used in the tactical community for training or just a little fun.

One of the items I had on my list of things to get for my Contour was a headband mount; however, with the company out of business I had to look for an alternative, which is when I found the Sony VCTGM1. It turned out to be a great find.

2013-09-24 12.32.40

Sony markets the VCTGM1 as a waterproof headband/mount for their action cam; however, as it turns out, the mount fits the Contour perfectly; resulting in a better overall system than Contour’s original mount.

The Contour camera attaches to Sony’s mount using the 1/4 x 20 tripod mount. Once tightened in place the camera is rock solid.

2013-09-24 12.32.59

The mount then clamps on to a wide headband that’s include with Sony’s VCTGM1. The entire configuration is extremely secure and very comfortable. The Sony mount works with the Roam, Roam 2 and Contour + cameras.  The mount is also ideally suited for the wide head straps used in tactical goggles.

The SONY waterproof headband sells for $29.95 and it is worth every penny. So, check it out!

Biometrics And What You Should Know About It.

Many of you in the military and law enforcement communities will come in contact with biometric technologies, even as sequester takes a bite out of agency and branch budget dollars. The business case and operational case exists for expanding the use of biometrics both in theater and Main Street USA. So, it’s important that you  have the big picture. You’re not just enrolling a suspected insurgent or felon, you are part of a larger and expanding system designed to deal with groups and individuals not nation states. Members of the military especially SOF will increasingly be called upon to train and team with international partners to battle radical insurgencies across the world. Look no further than Nairobi, Kenya, for a snap shot of things to come and for a very strong case for biometric enrollments and authentication.

One Possible Model For A Biometrics Hierarchy

BIOMETRTICS

The concept of biometric identification does not stop with establishing a set of unique identifiers. It attempts to define who you are. To accomplish its goal and full potential it needs to associate unique biological markers with what you’ve been doing. If you want to understand biometrics you’ll want to look at the interrelationships between its numerous data subsets.

Biometrics – It’s Here And What You Should Know About It.

2013-09-18 10.44.02

The image on the left is an Iris scan, it happens to be mine and was enrolled voluntarily. It is more stable than a fingerprint and tamperproof; it uniquely identifies me in a computer database with a record size of 46,000 bytes. It is but one mode in a system of individual identification designed to be multi-model. When combined with other modes, like fingerprints, facial scan, palm scan and even DNA it precisely and uniquely identifies me. The United States government presently has a biometric database that consists of approximately 1.7 billion entries. A drop in the bucket, but it’s growing at a rate of hundreds of thousands of  modal sets per day.

Biometrics is here and getting ready to enter the commercial space with full force, but what exactly is biometrics, how will its use be promulgated and what are its profound social issues? These are questions that I’ll answer, this coming month, as I discuss the technology, processes and the profound issues it will raise.

OTIS Technology Introduces The Ripcord™

image

The Ripcord™ is composed of heat resistant Nomex® fibers braided over a molded rubberized core/cable combination and offers the ability to clean firearms properly from Breech-to-Muzzle® in one quick and easy pass.

The Nomex® material acts as both a brush to loosen and a patch to capture fouling particles. The molded rubberized core keeps the Nomex® cleaning surface pressed against the bore, ensuring an aggressive all-around cleaning. Additionally, the core is a helix shape, which helps engage the rifling throughout the length of the barrel.

Some added features to this one-pass cleaning tool are its ability to act as an obstruction remover for jammed cases and other blockages, and its 8-32 threaded ends for accommodating additional Otis cleaning components, if desired.

The Ripcord™ is simple and easy to use – just insert the longer, narrower end in the chamber and then pull it through from Breech-to-Muzzle®. Because of the rigidity of the Ripcord™, there is no need to gravity feed it through the barrel – making cleaning anywhere a breeze.

click to close

The Ripcord™ retails for $14.99 and is currently available in .22/.223 caliber, .308 caliber/7.62mm, 9mm, and .45 caliber, with other calibers coming soon. They are sold at major sporting goods retailers, and online at www.otistec.com.

Daniel Defense Raises $22,500 For Warrior Transition Battalion on Ft. Stewart.

Pooler, GA- September 9, 2013Daniel Defense recognizes the personal sacrifice the men and women of the United States Armed Forces make every day. Their dedication and care for the safety of their fellow Americans does not go unnoticed. Friday night, with gratitude, Daniel Defense presented a combat veteran and his wife with the gift of a mortgage-free home. “These men and women have heroically given up their bodies in defense of our freedoms,” says Marty Daniel, President and CEO of Daniel Defense. “While we can’t give them their health back, we can acknowledge their sacrifice, thank them and their family for their service, and provide spiritual support.”

Through the Military Warrior Support Foundation, Daniel Defense learned of a soldier, injured during his time of service. Specialist Justin Foley sustained injuries when the armored vehicle he was in struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Due to the injuries sustained, Foley now awaits medical retirement from the U.S. Army. “What we want to provide is hope for these warriors and their families,” explains Josh Kinser of Military Warrior Support Foundation. “By partnering with great, patriotic companies like Daniel Defense, we are able to put these heroes in a mortgage-free home and help them transition to a successful civilian life.”

Friday night, during a military tribute at the Inaugural Patriot Weekend in Pooler, Georgia, a check for $22,500 was presented to the Warrior Transition Battalion on Ft. Stewart. Shortly after, Specialist Foley, assigned to WTB Bravo Co., was presented a ceremonial key to the home he and his wife will receive, mortgage free.

Just A Few Comments On The Civil War In Syria

It’s a given that we should have been more closely coupled to the opposition in the early days of the uprising. Our procrastination did opened the door to extremist involvement in Syria. Enough said as it’s water under the bridge.

Syria has no friends; any allegiance to the Assad regime stems from economic ties with Russia and political ties to Hezbollah and Iran. A regime change in Syria achieves two very important goals. First, it will diminish Hezbollah’s capacity to threaten Israel as well as limit its influence in Palestine; possibly giving enough time for a diplomatic process to work. Clearly the foundation to a lasting peace in the Middle East. Secondly, it isolates Iran, either slowing or completely halting its nuclear program. Anything that we can do in this regard is most definitely worth the cost. Furthermore, I would have no hesitation in asking for financial support from UAE, Saudi Kingdom, Jordan and Kuwait to absorb the costs for that action. This is the big picture.

In the past few days we’ve also seen pictures of so called “rebel groups” executing Syrian regular soldiers. I’d suggest caution in drawing any hard conclusions from these videos. For a number of reasons that I’ll get into shortly.

In watching Syria’s actions prosecuting the war against its opposition I’ve concluded that its game plan is classical Cold War “Soviet” doctrine. I say Soviet because I want to draw a distinction between Cold War Soviet Union and present day Russia. During the Cold War, Soviet strategy was to simply surround an area of operation and decimate anything and everything within that perimeter. An approach the Assad regime expanded to include the use of chemical weapons, which are ideally suited for indiscriminate extermination.  Let’s call it modern day “Scorched Earth Policy”; it matters not whether you’re rebel or the corner grocer.

Part of that strategy, which was also used heavily and effectively during VietNam, is propaganda. The media has a short memory and equally short attention span but some of you may remember Viet Cong guerillas executing villagers then alleging U.S. actions were responsible for those deaths. So, I think we need to be very careful about drinking the Kool-Aid that’s coming out of Syria New York Times!

Instead why don’t we keep our eye on the big picture.

Our “illustrious” press is also engaged in advancing theories to suggest that AQ and affiliates could replace a disrupted Assad regime. Well, it may get ratings but the concept is pretty poorly thought-out, and here’s why. Syria has been, for the last 50 years or so, a secular totalitarian (dictatorship may be more accurate) government. Syrians are both educated and sophisticated, so it is highly unlikely that AQ will have one iota of a chance in establishing itself in Syria.

More troublesome however is the prospect of Hezbollah gaining access to chemical and biological stockpiles as the result of a halfhearted effort on the part of the US and the EU in Syrian. That concern is addressed in one of two ways:

  1. Ensure that Assad stays in power, giving up on the big picture -OR-
  2. A regime change with coalition forces on the ground who’s explicit and only goal is locating, securing and destroying Syria’s chemical and biological weapon caches.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially after 11 years of combat but it’s got to be done.

REVISION INTRODUCES OCUMAX® PLUS – A GAME CHANGING ANTI-FOG COATING

Could this be a blow to McNett? Probably not, but it sure is of help to the folks using Revision’s standard setting eyewear!

1563

Revision has just announced OcuMax Plus, the next-generation anti-fog lens coating. This is a game changing announcement. As you all well know,  you can put as many ventilation slots as your heart desires on a pair of goggles or ballistic eyewear, they will still fog up. If they are to be effective, protective eyewear must seal out environmental hazards while at the same time provide an unobstructed field of view for the operator. With this announcement, Revision could very well have solved the persnickety problem of fogging.

—Press Realease—

Essex Junction, VT, USA (September 5, 2013)Revision Military, a world leader in protective soldier solutions, introduces OcuMax Plus, the next-generation anti-fog lens coating. Revision continues to invest resources in advanced coating technologies in order to offer soldiers fog-free protective eyewear solutions. Eyewear fogging, one of the leading complaints from soldiers, can now be combated for both goggles and spectacles. Through continuous research and experimentation, Revision has proven that anti-fog technology can be taken to the next level.

“For a Soldier, a fogged lens may force him to remove his spectacles or goggles; leaving the Soldier’s sight unprotected and disrupting his concentration from the mission at hand,” says Eric Hounchell, Vice President, Optics at Revision. “We are confident that this new coating is the best-in-class anti-fog solution, and in applying it to our eyewear, is in keeping with Revision’s rigorous standards for top performing military eye protection.”

To help understand why fogging occurs on eyewear, the science behind fogging needs to be understood. Fogging happens due to an abrupt change of temperature; when the temperature of one surface of a transparent lens drops below a dew point due to a difference in temperature or humidity. Condensation appears on the surface of the lens and forms fine but randomly spaced droplets, resulting in scattering the light that travels to the wearer’s eyes.  This causes impaired vision. The performance of an anti-fog coating is related to its ability to prevent water condensation on the surface in form of droplets. Revision’s R&D team has found a unique chemical combination that results in a robust, durable anti-fog solution that can withstand in-field use.

Using its in-house anti-fog chamber, Revision tested the OcuMax Plus coating to the EN 166 standard, one of the only quantifiable standards applied to military eye protection. The result: fog resistance was excellent, with an OcuMax Plus coated lens remaining fog-free for over 100 seconds – 10 times better than competitors’ eyewear coatings tested to the same EN standard.

While the coating has been proven in the lab, it can also withstand the rigors of combat. In the field, users constantly handle, touch, and clean their lenses. OcuMax Plus has been designed specifically to perform in tough battlefield environments.

Revision has recently rolled out its new OcuMax Plus coating on the majority of its eyewear products including its  StingerHawk Spectacles as well as Desert Locust, Bullet Ant and Wolfspider goggles. This coating also prevents scratches, streaks and smears in order to prevent optical distortions.

Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug For The M1A or M14

2013-08-30 10.14.15

One of the tweaks worth considering for the M1A/M14 is the installation of an adjustable gas plug. This is especially true in a suppressed configuration and/or  for shooters that reload. Reloaders, in particular, will vary loads until they achieve the tightest groups possible. Here, the Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug helps in tuning your rifles performance to a particular load.

I recently had the opportunity to test the Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug. You can read my review below.

Rust-Oleum NeverWet

Rust-Oleum Never Wet is a non conductive hydrophobic (repels water) coating containing nano particles that bind with the material being coated forming a moisture barrier. The coating can be applied to metal, wood, fabric, leather, and cardboard. It can even be used to waterproof an iPhone. This two-spray system was produced by Rust-Oleum in partnership with the nano-technology’s developer, NeverWet.

The product is available at Home Depot and elsewhere for $18.96.

Needless to say, there will be a comprehensive review. If it works, the coating will be of enormous benefit to our community.

Hazard 4 Big Koala–MOLLE Compatible Pouch for Your Smart Device

2013-08-27 14.00.15

The diversity in equipment load outs is such that transporting or carrying these devices is nearly as important as the device itself. Smartphones, PDAs, iPad have all been integrated into the individual soldier/operator equipment loads, unfortunately without a great deal of thought being given to the transportability variable in the overall equation. So, when I ran across the Hazard 4 Big Koala pouch for the smartphone I decided to check it out. I liked it enough to write a review of it and finally to give it a recommendation.

US Army Restructures Its Combat Organizations

This past June we spoke about a proposed 14% reduction in the U.S. Army’s size. Those changes have already begun and will see the U.S. Army shrinking from current levels of 500,000+ to 490,000 by  2017. The downsizing will put the Army in compliance with the 2011 Budget Control Act. The Army’s contribution to the DoD’s overall budget reduction of $485 billion is expected to reach $170 billion.

To accomplish its goals, the service will shed 12 Brigade Combat Teams (BCT) from its current portfolio of 45 BCTs. This is 4 more deactivations than originally called for; a change stemming from adding a third combat maneuver battalion to the BCTs.

Do the changes put the Army behind the proverbial 8 Ball, well not really. Here is the final analysis. The Army will go from 45 to 33 BCTs. Since the brass is adding a third combat maneuver battalion to all but a couple of BCTs they’ll end up with a total of 95 combat maneuver battalions, which is only 3 less than the 98 currently in place.

So, “where’s the beef?” The lion’s share of its reduction comes from the elimination of 12 Headquarter (HQ) elements belonging to the 12 BCTs being deactivated. So, it’s not looking too bad for the home team as of this writing.

The picture it should be painting for defense industry leaders is to expect increased demand for mobility and C4ISR support technologies, as the remaining commanders pick up increased responsibilities.

LuminAid Solar Powered Light

I am all for harvesting renewable energy sources whether at the personal level or in commerce. I’m also an MBA and I understand economies of scale, NPVs. etc., and I know full well that harvesting of renewable sources of energy for commercial application has a ways to go before it becomes a viable substitute for biofuels. However, at the personal level a number of technologies have entered the market that make enormous sense, LuminAid’s Solar Powered Inflatable Light falls solidly in that category.

The LuminAid concept attempts to address lighting needs that arise from natural disasters. The company was formed by Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta.

The LuminAID Solar Light is a solar-powered, inflatable light. When not inflated, the LuminAid packs flat to create a lightweight illumination resource that is easily deployable and easily carried. LuminAID provides up to 15 hours of LED light and can be easily recharged in the sun.

To use the light, ensure that you’ve allow about 7 hours of charging time. This is easily done by exposing the small solar panel to sunlight while hiking or engaging in other activity. With a charged light you can now use the valve provided to orally inflate the air bag – what a clever way of creating a reflector! The bag both reflects and diffuses light from its LED source. It runs an amazing 8-10 hours in HIGH and 14-16 hours in LOW.

You can use this light for just about anything you can think of. If you live in an earthquake, tornado or hurricane zone get some. If you sail, get some. You can attach it to the snap shackle on your jib halyard, hoist it, and now you have a great deck light. If your anchor light goes out, no problem, hoist the LuminAid using your mainsail halyard or a convenient downhaul. If you hike, you’ll enjoy having a reliable and reusable camp light.

LuminAid can also customize the light with your company’s logo or custom art. It’s a great way to go so check it out!

Under Armour’s Tactical Softshell Jacket

under armour soft shellRan across UA’s Tactical Softshell Jacket, which I give a resounding thumbs up. The garment has slanted deep pockets that make accessing the contents a snap. The jacket is cut for a loose fit with a full length zipper; making it ideal for use with a low profile plate carrier or low profile chest rig. The right sleeve is accented  with a pocket suitable for a smartphone, and a generous loop panel for unit or moral patches. It’s made from a polyester / elastane blend that gives it a great four way stretch (vertical and horizontal), which all but eliminates binding. You have no esoteric fabric blends just an effective and functional garment at a pretty good price.

BTW, it is hooded with Velcro closure along the neckline. M.S.R.P $119.99 .
