Parrot Bebop Drone Available For Pre-Order

Parrot Bebop Drone

Parrot, is best known as the makers of the AR.Drone 2.0 smartphone-controlled mini quadcopter. They have recently added a new model that has peaked my interest. The new addition to the Parrot fleet is called “BeBop.” Whereas previous Parrot drones were built for the RC hobbyist market, with a 720p non-stabilized flight camera more for FPV than video recording, BeBop looks ratchets things up another notch bringing serious aerial video capabilities to the market. The most notable features being a unique image stabilization system and the ability, with the right hardware, to pair it with an Oculus Rift.

Its camera features a 180-degree fisheye lens plus a 14-megapixel sensor, allowing it to capture a wider field of view and higher resolution than it needs, so the image can be cropped by onboard software and have an image stabilization algorithm applied. If this sounds like electronic image stabilization (found on many consumer camcorders) that’s because that is exactly what it is. However, BeBop’s electronic image stabilization is a tad more sophisticated than your average home movie camera. It uses an array of sensors to keep track of movement and tell the software which way to “pan-and-scan.” For example, if BeBop gets jolted left, the “window” it crops out of the frame instantly pans right.

SkycontrollerThe other major feature introduced with the launching of BeBop is the ability to pair its camera with the Oculus Rift. The camera isn’t 3D, so you won’t quite be getting a virtual reality experience. But it does give you a truly first-person means of living your flights. By linking to the Oculus you’ll gain 3D functionality. If 3D is your thing you’ll have to purchase the Skycontroller, an accessory whose primary function is to extend the Wi-Fi range of the mobile device controlling the quadcopter up to 1.2 miles (2 kilometers).

BeBop uses GPS as part of the flight control system, and you can expect it to have similar autopilot features as the AR.Drone 2.0. when paired with the Flight Recorder USB dongle. It uses a 1200mAh battery, which is reported to last around 12 minutes.

Mechanical To Electrical Conversions–Old Concept Rebuilt On New Technology.

In a net centric battlefield, electronics is as important, if not more so, than soldier protection equipment and the choice of soldier weapon systems. Engagements and battles are won with accurate and timely dissemination of  intelligence, command and control and battlefield awareness; as a result, powered “smart” devices now permeate the armed forces and nowhere is that more visible than with ground forces. SOF, Big Army and USMC are increasingly becoming more dependent on electronic devices to meet mission objectives – something that I termed a few years ago as the electrification of the soldier.

To support the increased use of electronics, ground forces are required to carry an increasing number of batteries and the U.S. Army estimates, going forward, a soldier will need to carry 14 lbs. of batteries to support a 72 hour deployment, so the Army has been looking at ways to reduce and /or eliminate that requirement by implementing energy transformation technologies.

Energy transformation is nothing more than converting one form of energy to another. It’s like the hand cranks used during World War I and II to provide electrical power for comms stations and other uses.

A Soldier conducts dismounted maneuvers wearing Lightning Pack's Rucksack Harvester, Bionic Power's Knee Harvester and MC-10's photovoltaic, or PV, Solar Panel Harvester during an energy harvesting technology demonstration held at Ft. Devens, Mass. by the Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center. (U.S. Army photo by David Kamm)

The soldier depicted above is both actively and passively engaged in energy transformation. For example, the device worn on his legs is a knee harvester designed and built by Bionic Power Inc, based in British Colombia, Canada. It converts the mechanical energy of a walking soldier to electrical power. Bionic Power, markets the device as the PowerWalk™ M-Series; developed in collaboration with the Canadian Forces and the US Army. It resembles an athletic knee brace and weighs about 850 grams (1.7 lbs.) per leg. With a device on each leg, a user walking at a size0comfortable speed generates an average of 12 watts of electricity. At this rate, a little over one hour of walking generates enough electricity to charge four mobile phones. The PowerWalk™ M-Series intelligently adjusts the amount of energy that it harvests as a function of walking speed and terrain, harvesting more energy when available and dialing back energy harvesting when it might be obtrusive.

A second device built by Lightning Pack and marketed as Rucksack Harvester converts the mechanical movement of the pack on the soldiers back as he or she walks or double times to electrical energy. Lightning Pack publishes the following performance criteria.

Activity

      Avg. Electrical Power

Walking at Relaxed Pace

12-15 W

Walking at Hump Pace

20-35 W

Running

33-40 W

The solar panel attached to the soldier’s pack is MC-10′s ( Cambridge, MA) photovoltaic, or PV, Solar Panel Harvester.

HSGI Adds Belt Mounted Pouches and Woodland Camo To Their Product Line

Our friends in Swansboro have been busy and continuing the tradition of making some of the best tactical gear on the planet with the introduction of belt mounted TACOs and a “new” pattern, Woodland Camo – when I saw that I became misty-eyed and nostalgic but yes it is true Woodland is now available.

Now there are a lot of people out there that will tell you Company X’s kit is great blah, blah. Folks the proof is, as they say,  in the pudin’ and this is my kit…

P1000042

I’ll reiterate, High Speed Gear Inc. out of Swansboro, NC produces a superb product.

Candidly, there were quite a few times when I did not want to wear a drop leg arrangement and simply wanted something that will mount on my belt. HSGI heard its customers and introduced product to address the requirement.

HSGI’s entire pouch line now has a belt mount counterpart!

But, I don’t know about the Woodland Camo part of this equation as I have nothing to wear. Well, I may still have a set of BDUs somewhere…

In closing, Christmas is nearly upon us and HSGI is top of the line so pay their new website a visit and do some of your shopping early this year.

The Man at Arms was a warrior, pure and simple. A stalwart and dependable fighter who exhibited great martial prowess with a range of weapons. He was a capable and competent warrior who was the veteran of many conflicts and was often first into the fray. Although he was not a Knight, he fought and trained alongside them as a brother in arms.

To honor these rugged, reliable, salt-of-the-earth warriors we have created a range of true journeyman’s weapons that we have called the Man at Arms Collection.

These practical and battle ready swords lack the gleaming blades and polished silver steelwork of our other swords, but they pack a resounding punch where it counts!

Approximating the quality and performance of our high end swords, the Man at Arms collection features a selection of some of our finest high performance blades but at a markedly reduced price.

Their fully sharpened and blued blades have a distinctive gun metal finish that compliments their black leather handles, and when well-oiled they are gleamingly beautiful in their own right.

If you always wanted a Cold Steel sword, but couldn’t afford one, the Man at Arms collection is for you.

Colt Defense LLC One Of Several Domestic Gun Manufacturers Experiencing Sluggish Sales

Colt Defense LLC one of the oldest and most reputable firearm manufacturers in the United States, is feeling the sales pinch. The company warned that it could fail to make a $10.9 million payment to bondholders due on 17 Nov. If  the company skips the payment, it will enter a 30-day grace period. If payment is not made by 15 Dec, it will be in default and bondholders can demand immediate, full payment.

Colt’s NT 10-Q “Notification of inability to timely file Form 10-Q or 10-QSB” Acc-no: 0001104659-14-079873 (34 Act)

Colt Defense LLC (the “Company”) is unable to file the subject report in a timely manner because the Company is working through accounting considerations and liquidity concerns with respect to its financial operations.  As a result of several recent business trends negatively impacting the Company’s current and forecasted revenues and cash flows, the Company is evaluating its forecasted operating cash flows in consideration of recent delays in product shipments and availability of borrowings under the Company’s Credit Agreement.  As of this filing, the Company believes that it is probable that it will not be in compliance with its Term Loan covenants, as amended, as of December 31, 2014 as they currently exist absent an amendment, waiver or refinancing of the Term Loan Facility.  The Company is in current discussions with existing and potential financing sources to address the situation as discussed below in Part IV.

Colt Defense LLC attributes its current state of affairs to decreased government spending and significantly lower consumer demand.

IWI’s New Galil ACE Top Down

IWI has done a great job of modernizing this classic. I like the fact that it’s coming to market chambered in 7.6×39. I’ve shot Galil rifles in the past and you definitely needed your Wheaties – it was a heavy rifle and heavy to hump around. The new version comes in at 7.5 pounds without clean and without the magazine.

What The Changes In The Computation Of GDP Will Mean To Your Business.

This week’s shoot-the-shit is on the 14th comprehensive revision of the national income and product accounts (a.k.a. GDP). GDP, as you all know, is a measure of the output of the economy. Last year, 2013, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the 14th comprehensive revision to GDP. The revision expands the intellectual property account to include expenditures for research and development (R&D), entertainment, literary, and artistic originals under the assumption they provide long-lasting service to the businesses, nonprofit institutions, and government agencies that use them. Why is this important to know?

First it adds to GDP, and in part accounts for the larger GDP estimates in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2013 and those throughout 2014. I don’t want to give you the impression that I oppose these changes but I am disappointed that it was not verbalized in the media. In fact, I don’t believe there was any discussion at all. I may be wrong on that, and if so I stand corrected, but, we, as consumers, businessmen and citizens need to understand the change and the corresponding increases in the GDP estimates. These changes will be less important going forward but for 2013 and 2014 they are relevant especially in understanding why we are seeing GDP estimates of 3 and 4 percent yet unemployment is still at 5.8%.

The second important point to get a handle on, because it’s one that impacts a large number of businesses is the treatment of R&D expenses going forward.

Business transactions have a financial treatment and a tax treatment. Currently, the financial accounting treatment of R&D expenses is to recognize 100% of R&D as period expenses. Let’s say that in 2014 you had $1,000,000 of gross income and incurred $350,000 of R&D expenses. Your net income for the accounting period is $650,000. This is the income that would be reflected on your profit and loss statement.

For tax purposes, you can take 100% of all R&D expenses in the current tax year, or you can depreciate R&D expenses over any period of time up to 60 years.

  1. In the first example you have  gross income of $1,000,000 and R&D expenses of $350,000 so your taxable income is $650,000.
  2. In the second example, you decide to amortize R&D over a 10 year period using a straight line method.  The yearly deduction you can take is $350,000 / 10 = $35,000. So, for the current tax year, your gross income is $1,000,000 and your R&D expense is $35,000, so your taxable income is $965,000.

Under the 14th comprehensive revision , a business would have to carry R&D as an asset that would then be depreciated using some formula. Your balance sheet would increase year over year by the amount of continued R&D investment net of current period depreciation. I’m not sure if the Financial Accounting Standards Board has a pronouncement to deal with the change, so I’ll need to research that. However, for tax purposes, it is quite likely that you will lose the ability to deduct 100% of R&D expenses in the tax year incurred. So plan on depreciating accumulated R&D expenses and the associated higher taxable income.

So, here’s the net effect of the change.

  1. On your financial statements you’ll have an increase in assets and increase in income. On your statements of cash flows the only net change you’ll see is an increase in taxes. (this is all assuming FASB goes along with a corresponding change to financial statements to accommodate the BEA change)
  2. On your tax returns you will report a larger taxable income and will therefore incur a larger tax liability all other things being equal.
  3. Wall Street will love it because they’ll be able to bid up stocks prices.

Here is my question….

With this change, R&D expenses went from intermediate inputs to output. When companies incur R&D expenses, they do so to produce a product, service or technology that is sold or licensed at some point in time; those are the real outputs of a business. Those outputs are captured in  the GDP accounts when they occur. So, adding accumulated R&D balances to intellectual asset accounts in calculating GDP creates, at least in my mind, the potential for distorting income and balance sheet asset valuations. I honestly don’t see a compelling need for this change and quite frankly I’m still trying to digest entertainment and literary works. But, the 14th change is here, so sit down with your accountant, CFO and or comptroller and run it past them just to make sure you understand the implications for your business. It’ll be time well spent!

Send us your questions and or comments.

Have A Great Weekend Everybody!

Recently Found Earth Artifact

This artifact recently found  in a weapon’s case suggests that older civilizations existed in North America with access to .22lr ammunition.

It is hard to fathom how life was in days where man was able to go to a shooting range and for $3 to $4 fire 50 rounds of .22lr. We believe this specimen to be of FIOCCHI origin that made its way across the oceans from Italy.

The 7.62 Sandman-S® delivers performance in a small package. The “S” stands for short, measuring in at 6.8″ in length with a weight of 17.3 oz., making it the perfect cross-over can for 5.56mm, 300BLK and 7.62 platforms.

The QD system features easy one hand removal, in mere seconds, without the wobble or seizing that can often times affect performance. Easy-on-easy-off with minimal point of impact shift or loss of precision.

As an innovative 7.62 design first, the front cap is detachable and features an integrated flash hider. This affords better performance, particularly in low light conditions. The detachable front cap also provides some level of assurance when that “accident at the range” happens and the can gets dropped or abused. The front cap can be replaced trouble free without the need of sending it back for time consuming repairs.

The 7.62 Sandman-L® is designed for those demanding absolute  performance in a suppressor. The “L,” or long version, is made and constructed from the same materials used in the “S” version and measures in at 8.9″. It offers true sound reduction of 31dB firing standard 7.62 ammunition. Just like the “S,” the long version uses Dead Air’s industry best QD system for fool-proof quick one handed mounting. The mount features Nitride® finished 17-4 stainless steel construction for the ultimate in durability. The Sandman-L® features a detachable front cap with an integrated flash hider. The whole suppressor gets a Cerakote® finish for ultimate corrosion protection. The Sandman-L® is ideal for a tactical bolt rifle or a .308 AR.

For those demanding the ultimate silence from a precision rifle suppressor, the Sandman Ti® suppressor is it. It features a titanium tube with precision rifle direct threads and detachable front cap specifically designed for the challenging environments faced by law enforcement professionals. The exterior is finished in Cerakote® for ultimate durability.

Celebrate Veterans Day

This is an excerpt from a Veteran’s Day essay, the author is unknown but I’d venture to say of high school age. It communicates feelings that are regrettably absent often superseded by smart devices and network appliances. Patriotism is not exclusive to military service, it’s often a reason for public service or just teaching your children that there is more than self; that God and Country are as much a part of us as one’s self. This Veterans Day take time out of your busy schedule to be a Patriot.

“…Our nation’s veterans pledge their lives to our defense, so that, in their absence, we can continue to live in freedom, and enjoy our time in life. Veterans are separate from our everyday struggles. They represent our country as a whole, people of every belief coming together and standing strong.

They do not pledge themselves to us simply because it is their duty. They have a deep-seated belief that this country is worth fighting for, and they volunteer to be the ones to step forward in its protection. The patriotism in their hearts is what allows everyday life to continue unimpeded; it is how they advance and do what they must for the good of the country as a whole, not just what they would want themselves…

Happy Birthday USMC

Every 10th of November we celebrate and honor the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It was on this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines…

“That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of privates as with other battalions, that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies; unless
dismissed by Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalions of Marines.”

Franklin Armory Introduces The F17-V4 .17WSM

Press Release:

Franklin Armory, maker of quality MSR firearms, is pleased to announce the launch of the forged F17-V4 chambered in .17 Winchester Super Magnum.

Compared to the 5.56 NATO cartridge, the .17 WSM obtains similar velocities with long range accuracy that most varmint hunting and target shooting enthusiasts desire. The gas piston system, developed in partnership with Osprey Defense, adds increased reliability and decreases cleaning requirements. Because the .17 WSM is a rimfire cartridge, it is not classified as an “Assault Rifle” in most states. In California, the F17-L is distributed with a standard magazine release button!

The Franklin Armory F17-V4 platform is based on a traditional modern sporting rifle with a few key distinctions. The rifle’s buffer was custom made to match the lighter recoil and shorter stroke length of the .17 WSM. The patent pending bolt carrier group is based on the original Eugen Stoner design of a rotating locking bolt, but is cut differently to facilitate the custom sized magazine feed lips and the pistol length gas piston system. The carrier is also notched to have a fully functional forward assist. The Free float, tripod mountable handguard has provisions for installing a bipod stud and Magpul M-LOK accessories.

“The new F17-V4 features all of the same proven characteristics that has made the F17-L one of the most reliable and accurate rimfire MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) configurations on the market today,” said Jay Jacobson, Franklin Armory President. “Like all of our other quality firearms, we have incorporated the same attention to detail to provide a high-quality and reliable platform that I am sure all of our customers will truly appreciate.”

The F17-V4 retails for $1,499.99 and is available now.

Specifications:

  • 20” Heavy Full Contour with 11 Degree Target Crown and Recessed Muzzle, 1/9 Inch Twist, Salt Bath Nitride Chamber, Bore, & Finish, and Chambered in .17 WSM
  • Fully Functioning Forward Assist
  • Patent Pending Custom Designed 17 WSM Bolt Carrier Group
  • Custom Osprey Defense Gas Piston System
  • Franklin Armory Custom Tuned Trigger
  • TML-12 Handguard
  • Custom .17 WSM 10 Round Magazine
  • MSRP $1,499.99

This Mischaracterization Of The American Redneck

P1000012

I could not pass this up because I know of no “respectable” redneck that would do this to his or her shotgun. FYI, a great many of these so called “rednecks” are sitting on deeds for several hundred acres of prime land.

Wall Street Rallies Around Rebounding Oil Prices Are You Kidding Me ?

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is an open discussion on the recent media assessment that this week’s stock rally was fueled by a Republican sweep in the midterm elections AND “Rebounding Oil Prices.” So, let’s take a look at part 2 of that statement to see if it even makes sense.

Rebounding oil prices mean that oil prices are heading back up. Because of the relative inelasticity of fuel prices, it means higher costs for manufacturers, distributors and ultimately the consumer who is still wondering what recovery the media and politicians are talking about.

Higher oil prices mean the supply side of the economy has to absorb higher costs. If they are in a competitive business sector, they either have to accept smaller profits or increase prices, which will hit sales. On the consumer side, higher fuel costs especially with old man winter on the doorstep, means less disposable income, which translates to lower capital goods purchases and lower retail sales. Big ticket items, even with 0% interest rates will take a back seat. Prospects for employment are diminished.

So, who benefits in an economy with rising oil prices? Speculators, derivative traders and corporations, who are finding that it is better to apply idle cash or borrowed money, at record low rates, to roll into the stock market in lieu of adding plant and equipment to increase production capacity or achieve efficiencies; after all, they can always have their widget made in China.

I’ve taken the liberty to add a couple of interesting data sets to this discussion. The first is GDP data from 2000 to 2014 (it’s available as far back as 1950) and its trend line. You’ll note that it has a downward slope. Downward sloping GDP trends are an indication that the domestic economy is contracting and not expanding.

Added for clarity: When I suggested the economy was contracting, it was a forward looking statement. The data I presented shows that GDP is growing at a decreasing rate. If the trend is not reversed the economy will, over the longer term, show contraction in real terms (meaning net of inflation).

The second chart is the Balance of Trade data from 2000 to 2014 with its corresponding trend line. Note that it too has a downward slope. This is an indication that we are importing more than we are exporting at an increasing rate.

united-states-gdp-growth

united-states-balance-of-trade

The data presented should prompt you to ask the question… Why are we seeing a stock market at over 17500? The reason is that huge piles of cash (some of it borrowed at near zero interest rates) have nothing to do, so it moves into the market driving stock prices higher. If you are a Wall Streeter, you’re basking in bonuses and Mercedes Benz. The sad reality in all of this is that there is no real economic support for these prices other than the sheer demand for stocks. Stock prices are rising simply because there is nothing else for money to do. You’ll here a lot of B.S. about price earnings ratios and blah, blah, blah; however, the fact remains that there is no real (real is another way of saying economic) support for these levels. When someone is telling you corporate earnings are strong, ask where the earnings are coming from. Is it outsourcing, restructuring and cost cutting, or are they coming from strong sales. You can then draw a meaningful conclusion. So, if you think the stock market rally is an indicator of the strength of the economy, you may want rethink your position.

The submarine community has a famous saying, and I quote: “What comes up must come down, but what goes down does not necessarily have to come back up.”

The new Republican majority in Congress needs to move the recovery out of Wall Street and into Main Street. There are a number of ways in which that can be achieved without adding to systemic risk or hampering the flow of capital.  In the meantime lets not create any more monsters through consolidations – like the banking sector. Let’s put monetary and fiscal policies in place that increase competition and domestic manufacturing. The best way to deal with the national debt is with a growing GDP. They have two years to get it right.

MITCH McCONNELL I BELIEVE IN YOU!

Let us know what you think?

BTW – I was asked about shoot-the-shit rules. A good shoot-the-shit has no rules, you don’t have to support your comments or provide sources. You can switch subjects, express opinions or call somebody a moron. Anything goes!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!
