RAD WATCH BY MTM SPEC OPS OF LOS ANGELES
In addition to being a visually striking timepiece, MTM’s new RAD model is the ideal companion to individuals working in an MOS, or operating in environments, were there is a risk of radiation exposure. Radiation dangers vary with the source but generally speaking we are concerned with three components; alpha particles, beta particles and gamma particles.
Alpha particles are slow moving and present a serious toxicity concern when ingested through food, water, air and/or absorbed through the epidermis. These particles have low energy levels and don’t penetrate soft tissue; however, they will enter the body as I’ve previously described. Beta particles are a higher energy particle emitted from the nuclei of radioactive materials, like those found in dirty bombs, or in some isotopes used for medical treatments. These particles can penetrate skin, 1 to 2 cm, and cause both epithelial and subepithelial damage. Some examples of these materials are cesium-137, iodine-131. Gamma particles are high energy particles commonly associated with x-rays. They can easily penetrate soft tissue and are very damaging depending on exposure. Garments and respiratory equipment protect the individual from Alpha and Beta contamination. Here, the key is to prevent the contaminants from being ingested, or from entering the body through the pores. However, Gamma exposure can occur at a distance and requires lead barriers and specialized protective materials or structures to control exposure. To protect yourself from Gamma exposure there are two critically important things to keep in mind. First, you need knowledge that gamma radiation is present and you need a mechanism to determine intensity and accumulated exposure; here is where MTM’s RAD watch comes in to play.
There are a number of technical metrics used to assess exposure; for example, the rad, rem and Sieverts. The MTM watch uses the millisieverts, which is the more modern international standard. The RAD tactical watch has a built in counter for detecting harmful ionizing (gamma / x-ray) radiation. The integrated Geiger-Müller tube measures single-dose gamma ray levels, as well as cumulative exposure. The detector tracks dose equivalents – from 0.0001 to 9999 millisieverts (mSv), and the dose equivalent rate up to 4000 microsieverts per hour (Sv/h). Users can set their maximum radiation threshold, up to 9999 mSv, and an alarm will sound when this level (user preset) has been reached. Radiation levels are displayed graphically and can also be shown in the digital display, which can be switched between dose equivalent rate, accumulated dose, and the time. The time is shown via tritium illuminated analog hour, minute and second hands. The digital display is EL backlit.
The RAD is also an excellent tactical watch that is water resistant to 330 feet and powered by a lithium battery. MTM offers a rugged metal band option that fits wrist sizes up to 9 inches in circumference.
MTM’s RAD is available directly from MTM or any of its authorized distributors. M.S.R.P. $1,500

HARRIS TO ACQUIRE EXELIS FOR $4.75B

Over a year ago, I alerted our readers to the upcoming consolidation in sectors of the Defense Industry, resulting from Sequester. A prognosis that is unfolding even as I write this. Harris communications has just wrapped up a deal to acquire Exelis in a $4.75 billion cash + stock transaction. The deal will close in June of this year pending regulator and Exelis shareholder approval.
The new company will have more than $8 billion in revenue and about 23,000 employees globally, including 9,000 engineers and scientists.
“Acquiring Exelis is transformational for Harris,” said Harris CEO William Brown. “The combination of the two companies’ highly complementary core franchises creates a competitively stronger company with significantly greater scale.”
In our view, this is a match made in heaven for several reason. Most significant is their highly complementary core competencies. There is very little redundancy and that keeps restructuring costs to a minimum. I’m looking forward to some great products and technologies emerging from the combined organizations.

KLASHNIKOV USA WILL OPEN A FACTORY IN THE U.S.A.
Matt Korovesis with the Outdoorhub reports that the RWC Group, official importers of Russian made AKs, will be opening a factory in the U.S. later this year. The U.S. manufacturer is called Klashnikov USA. According to his report, the announcement was made at this year’s Shot Show, in Las Vegas, to the delight of many of its attendees. Three states are currently competing for the manufacturing sight.
Jim Kelley, Kalashnikov USA’s production manager was quoted as saying that he anticipates rifles will begin to come off the production line as soon as Q2, 2015. According to Kelley, 80% of current Russian made products will be made in the U.S. facility; that could include shotguns, conventional rifles, and possibly a 9x19mm carbine.

U.S. TACTICAL SUPPLY AT SHOT SHOW 2015
U.S. Tactical Supply hails from Albany, OR but they have a national reputation for being the one-stop shop for military and law enforcement tactical gear. I want to recognize them for having a particularly interesting flair for precision shooter system. The company can supply any need be it Ghillie suits, I2 or thermal weapon sights, magnified optics, tripods and other load bearing systems. More importantly, the folks at U.S. Tactical Supply understand the needs of a tactical MOS and are able to meet them at a moments notice. Your procurement folks will definitely want to add U.S. Tactical Supply to their Rolodex.
PIG Saddle
U.S. Tactical Supply is a national distributor for Shadow Tech LLC, makers of the HOG and PIG saddles. If you’ve ever had second thoughts about the load bearing ability of a PIG saddle this picture should remove all doubts. I put the weight at 22+ pounds without a magazine. Per U.S. Tactical Supply it’s 17 lbs. without the thermal sight. I also had the opportunity to check out the SSLOOPHOLE Sling, which can be candy cane wrapped around the tripod leg to add stability to the system.

HENSOLDT AT SHOT SHOW 2015
If military optics had a Who’s Who, Hensoldt would be at the top of that list. I fully recognize the existence of exceptional quality optics in the market; however, if the day comes when I look out of my kitchen window only to see a large mushroom cloud in the horizon, Hensoldt would be the optic I’d take with me. Yes, they are heavy, but do not, for a second, dismiss the concept of mass being of enormous value under a variety of circumstances. For example, the Hensoldt Spotter 45, shown above, is a 15-45×72 spotting scope with Horus H32 reticle; weighing in at just under 4 lbs. It is stout, no doubt, but its ruggedness and optical clarity is, in this humble writer’s view, unsurpassed. It sells at a princely sum of $4,330 but it is a lifetime investment. There’s also a number of accessories available including a digi-scoping mount for attaching a digital camera to the Spotter 45.
Hensoldt makes several rifle scopes but the model that elevates me to a state of arousal is the Hensoldt ZF 3.5-26×56. The scope body is compact at 14.5 inches, and features the cleanest looking MRAD reticle that I’ve ever seen. This optic ships with a double-turn elevation turret providing 18 mrad (180 0.1MRAD clicks) of adjustment per rotation for a total of 36 MRAD (126MOA). Unlike other manufacturers using a zero stop, Hensoldt allows you 0.5MRAD below the zero point. All of this exceptional quality comes at a price and this rifle scope is a $7,000 magnified optic. Ah, what an elegant way to top off a Steyr HS.50 M1! True, I can think of 7 manufacturers producing exceptional optics at half the price of a Hensoldt optic, but It simply does not get better than Hensoldt. A Rolex is nice but a Patek Philippe is so much classier!
In closing, if you are unfamiliar with the Hensoldt brand, you owe it to yourself to get up to speed. Hensoldt is now an Airbus company and well represented in the U.S. by Euro Optics. Check it out!

WAS PETE CARROLL SMOKING GRASS …

Good Morning!
It’s Friday and therefore time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. If you’re new to the BLOG, a shoot-the-shit is the only time you can make whatever statement you want to make and not support it with fact, you can insult someone, use profanity, bull shit a little or a lot, and change the subject. (for example switch from the Super Bowl to Victoria’s Secret decision to use husky gals as models)
I’ll kick it off by saying that this Super Bowl was absolutely one of the finest games I’ve seen in a long time; both the Patriots and Sea Hawks played exceptionally well. It was a cliff hanger, nail bitter or whatever you’d like to call it. So, what the hell happened?
Did Pete Carroll actually think Russell Wilson would complete a slant pass to Ricardo when they were asshole deep in Patriot jerseys? Even my fucking mailman thought it was the worse call in football history. So, what do you think?
Be Good, Be Safe and Have a Great Weekend Everyone!

MAGPUL INDUSTRIES HUNTER 700 STOCK AT SHOT SHOW 2015
That rumbling you felt was the great disturbance in The Force when Magpul Industries, king of all things polymer, announced its Hunter 700 stock at Shot Show in Las Vegas. This is a Remington 700, short action, drop-in with optional conversion from bottom metal to AICS 5 round magazines. Hell, I was impressed with the preproduction sample on display, so I‘m looking forward to getting eyes on the production version. Given Magpul’s reputation for quality and making things that work you can bet your bottom dollar that April 2015 is worth waiting for; even if it’s actually June 2015. We shall see; however, the thought remains the same. Wait!
At 2.9 lbs. without the action and bottom metal, this is the lightest accessory stock for the Remington 700 platform on the market. The Hunter 700 allows you to keep your Remington bottom metal; however, should you desire to move to a detachable magazine, Magpul offers a conversion kit, available as a $69 option, that will let you go from a box magazine to an AICS compatible detachable magazine. The magazine capacity is limited to 5 rounds for the hunters but I see 10 round magazines not too far into the future.
The stock is made from a reinforced polymer shell with Type III hard anodized aluminum bedding blocks. It has an adjustable LOP from 13.0”-15.0” with 0.50” spacers and the cheek comb can be adjusted using a cheek riser kits that give you an additional cheek height of 0.25”, 0.50”, or 0.75” The forend is rigid and Magpul heat tests all of its products so shooters all along the sunbelt need not worry about the stock loosing rigidity under a brutal AZ or AL sun. Magpul has also included M-LOK™ slots on forend sides and bottom so you’ll have access to the veritable cornucopia of M-LOK accessories entering the market.
M.S.R.P. $259.95 for the stock and $69.95 for Bolt Action Magazine Well, which gives you the detachable magazine functionality

SIG SAUER SUPPRESSORS AT SHOT SHOW 2015
I’m going to make a prediction right now and that is SIG Sauer Suppressors will have a very successful market entry. Not an easy task given the level of competition in the space mind you. However, SIG is approaching it as a hugely successful firearms designer with tons of manufacturing experience. At first glance, something that struck me as very positive is volume, volume, volume. Suppressors need two important things to be effective, large internal volume and high resistance to expanding gases. I haven’t seen SIG’s baffle stack but volume is certainly there. The rest is all mechanical, specially when discussing QD. Here too SIG has done some very interesting things.
SIG has designated their quick detach (QD) strategy as Taper-LOK. I’ll tell you right now that brain cells were working full-time on this concept. The taper provides two bearing surfaces and any time we engage two surfaces we align concentrically. Secondly, you’ll notice the absence of teeth, so the need for ratchets is eliminated, and with no ratchets come no broken springs or teeth to worry about. Now, for additional proof of brilliance let’s look at the QD mount, it’s a modular design that can be configured as a muzzle brake or flash suppressor by simply replacing the front end. When using it as a muzzle brake timing it is amazingly simple. Here’s how it goes.
-
Install the taper and Rocksett
-
Install the front piece using a crush washer and torque to index.
More good news, cost for the muzzle brake 5.56, 7.62, or 338 is $69
SIG is offering rifle suppressors in four families.
-
Steel Direct Thread ( 5.56mm/$545, 7.62mm/$595, 300 WM/$695)
-
Steel QD ( 5.56mm/$645, 7.62mm/$695, 300 WM/$795)
-
Titanium Direct Thread ( 5.56mm/$745, 7.62mm/$795, 300 WM/$895)
-
Titanium QD (5.56 M.S.R.P $845, 7.62 M.S.R.P $895, 300 WM/$995)
Note: All QD suppressors include a muzzle brake

ACCU-SHOT AT SHOT SHOW 2015
If you move in precision shooting circles, whether professionally or as an enthusiast, Accu-Shot needs no introduction. The Accu-Shot monopods and more recently the Atlas bipods are ubiquitous. I stopped by Accu-Shot’s booth while at Shot Show to visit with its founder, Kasey Beltz just to see what he’s been up to; with the same pride of a brand new father, Kasey showed off his new Atlas prototype.
The Atlas bipod was embraced by the military as well as the precision rifle enthusiast because of its ability to provide reliable weapon support in uneven terrain, vertical surfaces and a variety of settings where your standard bipod would be at a disadvantage.
The Atlas bipod cants and pans a full 30 degrees, 15 degrees on each plane. The legs have five positions with total travel of 180 degrees – stowed back, 90 degrees straight down, 45 degrees forward and stowed forward; of course, the legs are adjustable in length and the feet interchangeable. Now, with that bit of background I’m ready to jump into the prototype, which adds an arc to all of the other features mentioned.
So let’s say you break the surface of the water and need to make a shot but the only support available is the hull of a grounded boat. With the prototype, you can position the bipod legs along the boat’s topside then rotate the weapon to acquire a sight picture and engage your target. Or, better yet, you’re from Kentucky and need to go prone at a 90 degree angle to the fall line (Note that I made this up. But, I think you get the picture). Perhaps the best way to encapsulate the concept is by saying that it adds another plane of adjustment.

Brotherhood of War Patches: “Never Forget – Fight”
Over the last few decades, Special Operations Forces (SOF) have been the premier force in multiple conflicts across the globe and this hasn’t come without significant loss. These patches are a symbol of the brotherhood found within SOF. From Army to Air Force to Navy and the Marines, SOF units have stood by each other during the worst of times. We have all seen first hand fellow brothers make the ultimate sacrifice and these patches are designed to represent two things. First and foremost, they represent our fallen brothers – that we honor their sacrifice and that we are still here fighting for what they believed in. We remember their families and want to continue to support them after the loss of our brothers and their loved ones. Second, they remind us that the fight is not over. There are still individuals out there who would do harm to our friends and families. Our SOF forces will remain the tip of the spear in seeking out and removing those individuals. Our SOF forces do this willingly and we will continue to support them as always.
For each patch sold we will donate 100% of the total sale to Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This foundation supports all SOF personnel within SOCOM. These patches will be a way to honor your fallen brother and support a great charity.

STREAMLIGHT AT SHOT SHOW 2015
For 2015, Streamlight has upped the ante with higher outputs across most of their tactical line. The TLR-1 HPL went from 300 lumens to 775 lumens. In character with all of Streamlight’s weapon mounted lights, the TLR-1 HPL has a tightly focused well collimated hot spot with an abundance of peripheral light. On high, the reflector generates a beam that is effective to 450 yards. The TLR-1 HPL comes with a rocker switch that allows momentary or constant activation, or a remote pressure switch kit is available. Runtime on high is 1.75 hours.
Streamlight’s TLR-2 HL-G also saw a large bump in output to 720 lumens, but equally important is that Streamlight has gone to a direct drive green laser, so operating temperature range has been broaden significantly to -20°F to +120°F. Those of you familiar with green lasers know that they’re very visible unless it’s cold outside in which case it takes a while for them to be able to operate. The direct drive eliminates that issue. The laser operates in the 510 nm to 530 nm spectrum. Visibility of the laser pointer on non-reflective targets and in bright daylight is exceptional. The TLR-2 HL-G comes ready to mount on any Picatinny rail and can be operated with the standard rocker switch or using a remote pressure pad.
For 2015, Streamlight also made a number of enhancements to the ProTac line of handheld lights. The most notable is the introduction of the ProTac HL USB. As the name implies, the light can be recharged via a standard USB port or a rechargeable power pack offered by Streamlight. Light output is also way up to 850 lumens with a runtime of 1.25 hours.

KFS INDUSTRIES TACMOD CHASSIS SHOT SHOW 2015
When I mentioned in an earlier post that 2015 is the year for Remington 700 shooters I meant it sincerely. The availability of advanced short action chassis has never been better and with competition comes pricing options never available before. It also means that manufacturers will have to earn your business with substance not fluff.
KFS Industries announced at SHOT SHOW 2015 its TACMOD chassis for the Remington 700 platform. To call it impressive seems somewhat inadequate but I’ll leave it at that. The TACOD features a folding stock, aluminum handguard with a Picatinny rail at the 12 o’clock position, and the rest of the handguard is pre-drilled and tapped at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions for additional rail space as desired. Shooters can use any grip and buttstock styles designed for the AR platform, so there’s excellent flexibility on the ergonomics side of the house. This chassis is machine from aluminum and comes in at just over 3 lbs..
The TACMOD is a drop-in design accepting any barrel profile and oversized recoil lugs. The system is compatible with the AICS .223 and .308 magazines. Availability is scheduled for Q1 2015 at an M.S.R.P. of $1,200 to $1,300 depending on options.

BEST BOOTH AWARD FOR SHOT SHOW 2015 GOES TO SILENCERCO
WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH – Feb. 2, 2015 – SilencerCo, the industry leader in silencers and accessories, was awarded Best Booth at SHOT Show 2015 by prominent firearms marketing agency Primer Strategy. SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) Show is the firearms industry’s largest annual tradeshow, bringing nearly 70,000 people to Las Vegas each January.
The accolade was given to recognize SilencerCo’s enclosed art gallery-style installation, which used 10 striking gallery wrapped portraits and more than 20 silenced firearms to kick off a yearlong protest theme – #FightTheNoise. The attention to detail employed the use of pasted playbills and posters affixed to an exposed brick façade – all to illustrate the gritty, street-worn feel made iconic by many of the most successful social movements of the past century.

“While walking the SHOW Show floor we noticed a sea of repetition and lack of evolution from year to year – the same booths, same looks and same ideas,” said Katie Perrine, president of Primer Strategy. “Then we saw SilencerCo’s design and had to stop for a closer look. It really embodied what Primer sees as the new direction of the firearms industry – strong, creative, unconventional designs without fear of breaking traditions.”
“Hopefully manufacturers in the upcoming years will enter the ‘race’ for the best design at SHOT,” added Primer’s creative director, Benjamin Forde, whose past accomplishments include art direction for FX’s Sons of Anarchy and HBO’s Generation Kill and The Pacific.
#FightTheNoise – SilencerCo’s grass-roots campaign for gun owners to demand quieter firearms and fewer federal and state regulations on firearm silencers – will continue to be a major platform for mobilizing the public throughout 2015.

“SilencerCo has always been an advocacy leader in our space, and with silencers growing faster than any other segment of the firearms industry, we thought it was time to get consumers involved in change for the better,” said SilencerCo CEO Josh Waldron. “Silencer owners can expect calls to action throughout the year, supporting the deregulation of silencer purchase and ownership, as well as their use in hunting applications.”
For more information on SilencerCo’s products or vision, or to join the #FightTheNoise movement, visit www.silencerco.com.
About SilencerCo:
Founded in West Valley, Utah in 2008, SilencerCo started with a belief in the fundamental premise that firearms don’t have to be loud and has now become the market leader in sound suppressors, muzzle devices and related products. By investing in innovation, customer service, organic manufacturing, advocacy, education and talent, SilencerCo is now focused on making firearms hearing-safe for all hunting and shooting applications, introducing products that have never been made before, and making the buying experience a better one.
About Primer Strategy:
Primer Strategy was created to fill a gap within the gun industry – to provide strategic and long-term marketing integrated across all medias. As shooters and gun enthusiasts ourselves, we blend powerful know-how with creative minds from traditional advertising, entertainment and extreme sports agencies. We understand the unique needs of firearm and gear manufacturers, gun ranges and retailers unlike anyone else, and are committed to bring big ideas across the board. Our focus is on solid solutions that translate seamlessly across all marketing avenues to make our clients stand out against the stale techniques of the past.
PENTAGON ASKS CONGRESS FOR $585.3bn IN FY 2016
The Pentagon and White House are asking Congress for $585.3 billion to fund the country’s defense. $534.3bn is base budget money and an increase of $38.2bn from the prior year. The challenge here of course is that the requested amount exceeds the sequester cap of $498bn as mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011.
If approved as written, the Army will see $126.5bn, $152.9bn is earmarked for the U.S.A.F. and $161bn for the Navy. The remaining $144.9bn will go to fun overseas contingencies and DoD programs to include the F-35Lightning II, P-8s, E-2D Hawkeye, KC-46 tankers, Cyber Security, MQ-9 Reaper.
The budget also proposes a reduction of 11,300 in total force military strength; leaving the Armed Services with final force structure of 1.3 million active duty soldiers, 811,000 reserve personnel and 773,000 civilian full-time equivalents.
KRISS’s 9mm VECTOR SHOT SHOW
The folks at KRISS USA have been discussing introducing a Vector in 9mm for quite a few years; that moment has arrived. The 9mm KRISS will sport the new KRISS form factor, which has a very nice, I’ll call it aggressive, texturing on the forward end of the magazine well and the grip. KRISS has also relocated the safety lever so that it’s closer to the grip. In the older style KRISS people with smaller hands had to break their grip to operate the safety; that will no longer be the case. Like its .45ACP counterpart, KRISS 9mm will feed from Glock 17 magazines.
Also new is the redesigned trigger. The new trigger will pivot as opposed to slide back in a linear path; that will go a long way to improving the feel of the KRISS. Saving the best for last, KRISS will support caliber changes. To change between 9mm and .45ACP, remove the shroud and swap barrels.
KRISS USA is also jumping on the airsoft bandwagon with a number of offerings. I’m very happy with that move because I was an early adopter of airsoft technology for force-on-force training, so the more choices the better.

DESERT TECH R7S Chassis AT SHOT SHOW 2015
Remington 700 short action shooters are in for a real treat in 2015 because there are a number of new chassis entering the field, in the Q1-Q2 timeframe. These range for the budget minded polymer designs to the more intricate and robust offerings like the R7S (S=Short Action) from Desert Tech. This new for 2015 offering weighs in at just over 3 lbs. and features adjustable cheek comb, adjustable length of pull, folding stock and a rifle length handguard predrilled to accept rails of varying lengths at the 12,3,6 and 9 o’clock positions to meet your requirements. The chassis is self centering so there is no bedding required and will accept oversized recoil lungs, like the Badger Ordnance models. It is a drop-in arrangement so there is no gunsmithing required. The magazine well is designed for the AICS magazine, and as an option Desert Tech will supply an adjustable monopod. Pricing will vary with configuration but will fall in the range of $800 to $1,200. At present, Desert Tech management has no plans for a long action version of the R7 chassis; however nothing is off the table.
I was very impressed with the R7S and I think it represents an exceptional value for many of the LE Departments that are still using antiquated stocks on their Remington .308s

SIG SAUER AT SHOW SHOW 2015
SIG is unquestionably the juggernaut of the industry. SIG’s growth in both size and depth and breath of product is astonishing. So where to begin is my challenge. How many readers knew that SIG is now in the air gun business?
The company now offers SIG P320, P226, SIG MPX and SIG MCX replicas that are pellet guns. These are available in CO2 or Pre-Charge Pneumatic (PCP). SIG recruited Lou Riley from GAMO to be Managing Director of SIG’s Air Gun Division. I was blown away by the faithfulness of reproduction and the quality of these replicas.
Moving on to the highly anticipated SIG MCX. The rifle will begin shipping late January early February. In fact, as I write this post they should be on the truck en route. The MCX is a completely modular multi-caliber carbine 5.56, 300 BLK and 7.62 x 39. Barrel swaps are amazingly simple. SIG is shipping 9” and 16” barrels. Slide the handguard off and swap out the barrel for different calibers and/or lengths. SIG offers two stock styles, a folding stock and a collapsible buttstock, a la MP5, – there is no buffer tube. One of the many nice features available in the MCX are things like the forward bolt assist, feed ramps, etc. are all replaceable. Failures that would normally trash an M4 upper are not prevalent in the MCX design. An absolutely exceptional carbine that’s been in development for almost 5 years.
Next up is the SIG P320; again a multi-caliber platform in 9mm, .357SIG and .40 S&W; with plans for a .45 ACP conversion kit down the road. Also available in a threaded version.

RADOM-SPORT SEMIAUTOMATIC RIFLE AT SHOT SHOW 2015
For me, one of the highlights of Media Day At The Range was having the opportunity to check out the Fabryka Broni Radom Sport Semiautomatic rifle. This is a very sweet rifle with all of the pluses of the Avtomat Kalashnikova without any of its shortcomings. The rifle is chambered in 5.56 x 45 and will feed from a 30 round magazine; it will also feature a sufficient amount of rail space for all of the accessories and optics you would ever need. The trigger is very nice with a clean break at around 5 to 7 lbs. The rifle has an excellent balance, and fit and finish are superb. Radom will also be importing a .22lr version that I had a chance to fire on the range. I ran through a 25 round magazine without a single hiccup. Both the .22lr and sporting rifle version are commercial copies of the Beryl Model 96. These rifles are made in Poland but will be brought into 922R compliance by Radom here in the U.S.A. Radom is in the processes of securing ATF approval so I suspect your looking at June to August 2015 timeframe before they become available. Radom is also planning on introducing a Mini version of the rifle that will be sold as an SBR. The Radom promise is that all of these rifles will be faithful reproductions of their military counterparts.
If you like the AK patterned weapon systems you will definitely want to pick up one of the Radom guns. M.S.R.P. has not been released yet but I would plan on something along the lines of the ARSENAL SLR family.

LEUPOLD D-EVO MAKES ITS DEBUT AT SHOT SHOW 2015
One thing that can safely be said about our industry is that there is no shortage of innovation. Admittedly, some it is fluff but others solve real problems and add value. Such is the case with the introduction of D-EVO by Leupold & Stevens at this year’s SHOT SHOW. In fact, I give it my innovation award in optics for 2015. So, what is this D-EVO?
I’ll answer the question by addressing some of the problems it overcomes before I get into the mechanics. Rule number one for shooters in developing marksmanship is trigger control, sight picture and muzzle control. To become highly proficient a shooter brings the weapon up to his or her head, establishes a consistent cheek weld and squeezes off a round. Any breakdown in that process results in a missed shot or inconsistent shot placement. To overcome the cheek weld (read head placement) problem Aimpoint introduced the reflex red dot sight. The M68, as it was designated by the U.S. Army permeated the Armed Services and is used to date along with its T-1 and T-2 variants. However, its 1x magnification left something to be desired and soon after Aimpoint, and others, introduced a 3x magnifier. That technology satisfied the need for magnification but created other problems. Operators had to break cheek weld to rotate the magnifier in place, and once in place they needed to adjust their head and sight picture. So, the task for industry became how to add sufficient magnification, on a limited amount of mounting real estate and preserve the operators head position. From that challenge, Leupold’s D-EVO was born.
D-EVO sits directly behind the operator’s reflex sight but it’s not magnifying the red dot, it is a completely separate weapon sight equipped with its own reticle that must be zeroed individually. So, here’s what that means. As the operator, I can use a 25 meter zero for my reflex sight but zero my D-EVO at 100 meters; ending up with a weapon system that can accurately engage targets at any range within in its effective operating envelope.
The picture above presents the operators view of the system. To employ the system, the operator mounts the weapon as trained to do and establishes his or her cheek weld. To use the reflex sight he shifts his eyes up and to use the magnified sight he shifts his eyes down. The operator never has to change his grip or reposition his or her head. Bling! Bling! The free market economy at its finest.
Now for first impressions. I had the opportunity to shoot it in a laser trainer simulator. The sight is fast and accurate but there is an acclimation period that is well worth the effort. Now for one more piece of good news, it works with any reflex sight so your investment in that T-1 or T-2 is preserved. M.S.R.P. is $1,000 with availability Q1-Q2 2015.

STEYR HS .50-M1 AT SHOT SHOW 2015
I’ve always been a fan of Steyr HS .50, it was possibly one of the most accurate .50BMGs on the market. The rifle has a cold hammer forged barrel that turned the HS .50 into a tack driver. The factory 2 stage trigger broke like a glass rod at 4 pounds. But, it also had a major drawback especially for tactical application – it was a single shot rifle. That issue was resolved with the introduction of the HS .50-M1. Steyr’s new interpretation of the HS .50 comes with a 5 round magazine, long 20 MOA Picatinny rail system with Picatinny rails at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions , Adjustable cheekpiece , a newly designed and fixable bipod and a spine that extends to the buttstock. All of these enhancements make the HS .50-M1 an ideal choice for extended range precision shooting, antipersonnel or anti-materiel. An impressive addition to your weapons locker for right around $7,000.

American Sniper The Movie

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic was a tossup between deflated NFL balls or American Sniper the movie. Both have resulted in equally stupid dialogue but I decided to go with the movie. Remember this is a shoot-the-shit so you are free to change topics, if you choose to do so.
No doubt you’ve all been hearing about the great disturbance in The Force, with its epicenter in parts of the entertainment industry and both right and left media, ad nauseam. I saw the movie and found it to be about as un-sniper as you can get and still have it be about Chris Kyle. I think Clint Eastwood’s brilliance was creating a movie that paints an accurate portrayal of combat in Iraq through the life experiences of as U.S. Navy Seal sniper, Chris Kyle. The movie gives the audience a glimpse into the man’s character, commitment to his comrades and the strength and strains of his wife Taya. I didn’t see a lot of Ghillie Suites, stalks, building hides, etc. so any suggestion of sniping is crap.
I also believe that Michael Moore, Seth Rogen et. al. are entitled to their opinions and must be allowed to reveal themselves as the morons they truly are. It is a CLASSIC case of an alligator mouth overloading a canary ass. They’re uninformed and as the hackneyed cliché suggests, “an empty barrel makes the most noise.”
The movie is hugely successful for a number of reasons: well directed, casting was awesome, cinematography and editing superb and the story was powerful. As a result, it will be in the top 5 highest grossing films ever. If you haven’t seen it please do so, it will be time well spent.
Did I have an issue with it on the technical side? Yes! Mustafa, the jihadi “super sniper” was shooting a Dragunov SVD with a PSO optic. The SVD fires a 7.62 x 54R cartridge. Giving Mustafa the benefit of the doubt, let’s just say that he was using Russian made sniper ammunition 7N14, which is rolled specifically for the SVD. Recall the last scene where Chris Kyle found himself between Mustafa and the troops he was maintaining over watch on. Kyle turns towards the sniper and ranges Mustafa at 1900 to 2000 yards. This is a tough shot for a 338 Lapua but there has not been an SVD made that can make a 1900+ yard shot. Assuming a 300 yard zero, Mustafa would need 3795 inches of elevation, flight time is in the order of 5.3 seconds and bullet velocity about 750 feet per second at 1900 yards and a 158 grain projectile. A pigeon fart would have deflected the bullet.
So, let’s have a shoot-the-shit. You can agree or disagree, use foul language or change the topic. It’s your call.
Have A Great Weekend Everyone!

BURRIS ANNOUNCED THREE TACTICAL KITS AT SHOT SHOW 2015
AR-332 Tactical Kit
The Burris AR-332’s 3x magnification with the Ballistic CQ™ reticle is perfect for instinctive target acquisition and quick shooting from point blank to intermediate ranges. The black reticle is etched directly onto the prism, with red or green illumination at the turn of a dial. Reticle dots correspond to bullet-drop from 5.56 or 7.62 ammunition, but the optic can handle heavier recoil if needed. An Anti-Reflection Device reduces reflection and glare.
The FastFire II™ red dot reflex sight provides a 4 MOA dot with an automatic brightness sensor that adjusts to any lighting condition. Position it on top of the AR-332 for lightning fast target acquisition and close-range engagement.
AR-536 Tactical Kit
The fixed 5x magnification Burris AR-536™ is for lawmen, military and competitive shooters who want additional range plus fast target acquisition. The etched-on black reticle with red or green illumination offers lightning response to intermediate targets and precision shooting at longer distances. Its 10-position power/color selector satisfies all lighting conditions. The Ballistic CQ reticle’s holdover dots are good to 600 yards and work with 5.56 or 7.62 ammo. The kit includes an Anti-Reflection Device and FastFire II™ 4 MOA red dot reflex sight.
AR-1X Tactical Kit
The Burris AR-1X™ Prism Sight delivers both-eyes-open accuracy for ultra-fast shooting. The Ballistic CQ-1X black reticle is etched onto the prism for use without battery power, plus instant push button adjustment between green or red illumination settings. Burris Upgrades Popular XTR II Riflescope Line
XTR II™ line of tactical riflescopes gets two new reticles for 2015, improved turret knobs and higher magnification models.
The new Burris SCR™ (Special Competition Reticle), available in MIL and MOA versions, increases precision for long-range competition without adding clutter or distraction. The extended center illuminated area lets shooters confidently engage targets at long distances in low light and in shadows. The SCR increases speed and precision for wind hold-off as well as range estimation and impact measurement. SCR reticles are located in the front focal plane, assuring reticle measurements are precise throughout the entire magnification range.
SCR Mil (Low Power; High Power)
SCR MOA (2-10x/3-15x; 4-20x/5-25x)
The new Burris XT-100 click adjustment knob features 100 clicks per rotation instead of 80. It gives shooters 20% more adjustment per rotation and take most tactical calibers out past 1000-yards in a single turn. This means easier calculations, faster adjustments and less chance of getting lost on the dial. With the additional Zero Click Stop feature, shooters can quickly revert back to original yardage without counting revolutions. These upgraded reticles and adjustment knobs are found on
2-10x42mm, 3-15x50mm, 4-20x50mm, and 5-25x50mm models.
THE NEW GLOCK TBs AT SHOT SHOW 2015
If there was ever a year to seriously consider a forklift upgrade to your weapons locker 2015 is certainly the year to do that. As far as features and selection, I’ve never seen more viable choices than what’s available today. Glock for example has introduced their TB (threaded barrel line): G17 TB, G19 TB, G23 TB and G21 SF TB. Glock is shipping the TBs with barrels that are approximately 13.5 millimeters longer than standard Glock barrels. All of the barrels have metric left-hand threading G17 TB, G19 TB are 13.5×1 LH; G23 TB 14.5×1 LH and the G21 SF TB 16×1 LH. From what I was able to observe, all of the TB pistols are a Gen 3 design, so they are missing the dual recoil spring assembly, which makes sense if you want the pistol to cycle reliably with a suppressor installed. The only down side to this scenario is that you’ll experience a heavier recoil impulse when firing unsuppressed. But, remember that one strikes a balance with ANY suppressed weapon.
Another very nice feature of the Glock TB pistols is the addition of tall sights right out of the box. I like the sights as they come from the factory; they’re high enough to get you over the can and very visible.
Official M.S.R.P for the Glock TB pistols:
-
G17 TB $649
-
G19 TB $649
-
G21 TB $687
-
G23 TB $649

Highlights From Shot Show Theater SHOT SHOW 2015
2015 was a first for Shot Show Theater and what a great idea it is; one I hope will continue and expand throughout the coming years. It is a great venue for exhibitors to get the word out to members of the media about their direction and products. I think it should be a daily event during SHOT SHOW running from 17:00 to 20:00 or something to that effect.
I had an opportunity to sit through some excellent presentations from FN Herstal, Leupold Stevens, Faxon Firearms and the Outdoor Channel. Leupold Stevens featured Kyle Lamb and their new Leupold DEVO 6x magnified optic. And, I’ll have much more to say about the DEVO in subsequent posts.

SPYDERCO INTRODUCED A NUMBER OF NEW KNIVES AT SHOT SHOW 2015
The MATRIARCH 2 with the Emerson Opener has a very aggressively serrated Reverse “S” blade that does an amazing job of cutting through harnesses, web belts, etc. It is an ideal tool for our EMS folks. The Emerson Opener snags the pocket as the knife is pulled and deploying the blade.
The AQUA SALT™ was love at first sight for me. Obviously a fixed blade design with an excellent drop point and a very stylish and conservative belly. This knife is a slicer. The hollow ground blade terminates in a very fine razor sharp edge. The blade material is an H1 steel. The AQUA SALT is a general purpose design covering a vast range of user needs.
The SZABOHAWK™ is a Laci Szabo design that requires some explanation. To begin, the tomahawk is made from a single piece of D2 tool steel that is not skeletonized. The handles curvature serves a couple of meaningful functions; first, it isolates the hand from impact and secondly it provides a handle that can be used to drag. I’ll explain.
Note the two holes on the tomahawk, you can easily slip rope through them and terminate the bitter ends in a large figure 8 knot, also referred to as a stopper knot, then use it to pull or drag. Great idea!
At the end of the handle Spuderco and Szabo provide a pry bar. The business end of the SZABOHAWK uses a faceted edge to keep the cutting edge from binding.
The REVERSE is a design collaboration between Spyderco and edged-weapon trainers Craig Douglas (aka “Southnarc”) and Michael Janich. What is very cool about this defensive design is that the knife’s two-piece G-10 handle can be reversed to yield mirror-image “edge-out.”
These knives will be available in Q1 and early Q2 2015.

MTM Special Ops AT SHOWT SHOW 2015
MTM had a very nice display of some very cool looking time pieces. All of these watches use Swiss movements and come in a wide range of styles and sizes. My favorite, by a long shot, is the piece in the center with the Desert Tan case. Prices will vary with the watch but plan on $800 to $2,000 for most in the collection.

Steiner eOptics DBAL-A3 AT SHOT SHOW 2015
Steiner eOptics has introduced the DBAL-A3, which is a dual beam laser with IR illuminator. One of its more interesting features is the visible override function that allows you to integrate a weapon mounted light without the need for multiple remote pressure switches. The operator simply inserts one end of a Y-cable in the visible override port allowing him or her to very quickly switch to visible illumination, and as I previously stated all this happens from a single remote pressure switch. A second very nice feature is that the visible and IR pointers are slaved, so zero one and you’ve zeroed both.
The illuminator can be focused to provide short range wide field of view illumination as well as a narrower longer range beam that will mark a target out to 250 meters. There’s been some mention that the maximum effective range for the illuminator is 400+ meters but that may be somewhat ambitious.
The DBAL-A3 is not yet available, but availability is looking good for Q2 2015 at an M.S.R.P of $1,249.

RUAG AT SHOT SHOW 2015
RUAG SWISS P Ammunition requires no introduction. It is used by the FBI, Secret Service and a number of Special Operations units and specialized law enforcement units around the world. I have personally used the company’s .308 Swiss P and 300 Whisper (a.k.a. 300 Blackout) and lot to lot it has the most consistent performance of any ammunition on the market, and when fired competently virtually zero vertical dispersion. Established customer could recognize RUAG SWISS P from its blue box; going forward, that has changed to a more attractive packaging as show below. It looks great!
RUAG has also introduced a N.A.T.O. spec 124 grain 9 mm round marketed under the GECO Hexagon label. Unique with ammunition is the very tight hollow point and it’s stabilizing grooves. There is a total of six grooves running along the length of the bullet; hence, its name. GECO Hexagon 9mm ammunition is a match grade product that competes with Magtech and Hornady in performance but at a slightly better price, You’ll want to check it out.

Weaver’s Line Of Tactical Optics At SHOT SHOW 2015
It seems like everyone these days is producing a “tactical” magnified optic with varying degrees of success; Weaver is no exception. This is great news for consumers who don’t want to pay, or can’t pay, for German glass.
Prior to 2013 a large underserved section of the market existed; this space was occupied by shooters requiring repeatability, robustness and reliability but not necessarily the ability to resolve a beetle on a pine tree at dusk. That customer had to decide between spending $2,000+ on a quality tactical optic or fall back to hunting optics with no ranging capabilities, capped turrets and 1 inch tubes. Fortunately our free market economy recognized this need and several companies stepped in with excellent product offerings in the $800 to $1400 range. I never like to proclaim an optic as excellent until I shoot it but the Weaver line of tactical scopes looks extremely promising. Optical clarity is excellent edge-to-edge, turret rotation is positive with excellent tactile.
Key Features Include:
- Fully multi-coated lenses w/ extra hard coating on exterior lenses
- First focal plane reticles
- Waterproof / fog proof / shockproof
- Side focus parallax adjustment
- Reset-to-zero turrets (no caps to lose)
- Argon purged tubes to eliminate internal fogging
- One-piece construction
- 30mm tubes
- 5x Magnification
