Bryan Litz On The Effects Of Wind

Bryan Litz is a ballistician for Berger Bullets and Applied Ballistics. Bryan has authored a number of authoritative books on the subject of ballistics. His software, published by Applied Ballistics, can be found on a number of devices including the Kestrel Wind Meters by Nielsen Kellerman. The Applied Ballistics software and smart device app is considered an industry standard used by law enforcement and military units across the world.

Estimating the effects of wind is a complex vector problem. A vector is a measure that has both magnitude and direction. Vectors add and subtract like real numbers and in solving wind problems we attempt to estimate the resultant wind vector.  The weather meter is a tool designed to provide the shooter with the scalar component of the wind vector, in other words its high, low and average speed. It will also give you direction at the shooter’s position. The shooter is still required to read mirage and vegetation movement down range to arrive at a reasonable resultant wind vector. DARPA, and the defense industry are developing laser based tools that will soon be broadly available to solve the wind estimation problem. Wind estimation errors are responsible for virtually  all of the missed shots by competent shooters.

Nampa, Idaho (January 2016) –Adaptive Tactical, LLC, manufacturers of innovative firearm stocks and accessories, proudly announces that it will be displaying two new products at the 2016 SHOT Show, being held Jan. 19 – 22, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Sands Convention Center. The forend allows the user a comfortable, ambidextrous grip and the ability to add multiple accessories using the included tri-rail configuration. The Wraptor Elite Forend doubles as a heat shield and comes with an integrated patented “sight tunnel” allowing the user to rapidly attain a sight picture for faster target acquisition. This ergonomic design weighs one pound and measures 13″ x 6″ x 2″.

IWI US TO DEBUT THE NEW TAVOR SAR IN 300 BLACKOUT AT 2016 SHOT SHOW

Harrisburg, Pa. (January 2016)IWI US, Inc., a subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd., is proud to announce a new caliber for the TAVOR SAR; the .300 Blackout. The bullpup deemed “Rifle of the Year” by the NRA’s American Rifleman Magazine in 2014 continues to excite the American audience who have embraced the TAVOR SAR and the bullpup concept with open arms. For those who already own a TAVOR SAR in 5.56 NATO or 9mm, a .300 Blackout conversion kit will also be available.

“We’ve had a ton of requests for this particular caliber as its popularity has grown as a good self-defense round as well as a hunting round,” Michael Kassnar, VP of Sales and Marketing for IWI US explained. “The .300 Blackout is a highly accurate, soft shooting round that is also a very effective hunting round, unlike the lighter more traditional varmint or military calibers. We listened to our customers on Facebook and through our Customer Service Department and this was a round that kept coming up to the top of the wish list. And we listened to our customers express their need for a .300 Blackout rifle that can reliably handle sub-sonic and supersonic loads. The result is an integral gas regulator built into the Tavor barrel that is easily adjustable for sub or supersonic rounds.”

The TAVOR SAR bullpup configuration offers the short rifle convenience but with a full size rifle’s velocity, energy and accuracy. All of the TAVOR SAR’s parts are MIL-STD and 100% interchangeable. The 16.5″ or 18″ .300 Blackout barrel is cold-hammer forged and chrome lined, made from CrMoV steel. The long-stroke gas piston system is also 100% ambidextrous in configuration and operation with an optional opposite hand bolt, and a simple field stripping is all that is needed to quickly and easily break down the TAVOR into two major serviceable subassemblies. MSRP is $ 2,049.00.

The .300 Blackout conversion kit includes a 16.5″ or 18″ cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel made of CrMoV steel with a 1:7 right hand twist, a headspaced bolt, an A2 flash suppressor and barrel wrench.  MSRP is $499.00.

BUILDING YOUR AR15 RIFLE

Jansen Jones, Rob Romero and Optics Planet have done a great job of producing two videos that take you through building your AR15. Building your rifle is a topic misrepresented by the Gun Control Lobby. The core of the AR15, whether you are building your rifle or buying it as a complete system, is the lower receiver; as such,  it has been defined by the BATF as a firearm and bares a serial number. Purchasing a stripped lower receiver is NO DIFFERENT than purchasing a complete firearm; it must be done through a federally licensed dealer who will collect a Form 4473 and run a background check to complete your purchase. All other parts may be purchased over the counter or from your favorite retailer.

The principal reason for building your own rifle is first and foremost to customize your weapon with the myriad of accessories that are available; generally, all your competition guns are built from the ground up. Other reasons include cost savings or just plain fun.

The videos below take you through a complete build in structured and easy to understand presentations.

ASHBURY PRECISION SABER® MRCS-AR – Next Generation Modular Rifle Chassis Uses Commercial AR Shoulder Stocks & Hand Guards

APO Logo

Ruckersville, VA.Ashbury Precision Ordnance (APO) Manufacturing introduces the next evolution in the SABER Modular Rifle Chassis System: the MRCS-AR.  Utilizing the same Center Chassis Section module as all other SABER rifle chassis platforms, this model now integrates a wide variety of commercial AR shoulder stocks and hand guards.   The MRCS-AR is designed for the carbine shooter desiring to set up their bolt gun like their gas gun and, alternatively, it’s perfect for the bolt gun shooter needing a modular compact lightweight rifle with AR features.

The Ashbury MRCS-AR rifle chassis is engineered for recreational, hunting, competition, target and tactical shooting activities.  It is offered by APO with Magpul Industries furniture and in addition to AR compatibility, is also compatible with all APO and Magpul® M-LOK accessories, offering shooters hundreds of possible chassis configurations.  Now that’s a modular rifle chassis system!

“Our product development team has worked on this AR cross-over product for about two years,” said Gary Vance, APO’s Manager of Engineering Services.  “We wanted to make sure that it would provide exceptional performance in the hands of shooters and be just as accurate as our other SABER rifle chassis products.”

The SABER MRCS-AR rifle shoulder stock utilizes a mil-spec, six-position buffer tube and a Magpul MOE shoulder stock and cheek piece riser.  The retractable MOE shoulder stock assembly is attached to the SABER Center Chassis Section with a tension adjustable Double Locking Alloy Hinge making it both retractable and foldable.  Users can easily install other aftermarket AR shoulder stocks with ergonomic adjustments along with APO signature shoulder stocks.  This only requires a few easily installed accessories with simple tools.

The MRCS-AR is initially available for the popular short action Savage Model 10 bolt action rifle in right and left hand operation.  Long action models will be available later in 2016.  The MRCS-AR uses the Magpul PMAG® 5 7.62AC(tm) 5-rd detachable box magazine for the .308 Win family of cartridges and features an ambidextrous paddle lever release.  The MOE pistol grip is attached to the Center Chassis Section with a 17.5 degree Grip Angle Adapter (similar to a M1911-A1) and includes an adjustable hand grip-to-trigger distance feature for shooters with long or short fingers.

The new MRCS-AR employs a rugged APO designed octagonal aluminum alloy hand guard that features Magpul M-LOK accessory attachment system at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock position and a bipod stud located at the front of the hand guard.  The forend can accommodate barrel shank diameters and contours measuring 1.250″.  An optional carbon fiber hand guard with similar features is available as an upgrade.  For professional marksmen and predator hunters desiring to maximize down range precision using clip-on night vision and thermal imaging weapon sights, Ashbury’s unique one piece 20 MOA monolithic rail option is available.

The truly modular MRCS-AR rifle chassis system is manufactured to ISO:9001-2008 standards from aerospace grade aluminum alloys and carbon reinforced composites.  The base model has a standard hard coat anodized black finish.  A broad range of Cerakote ceramic finish coating colors are available from the APO Custom Shop – some of which match up very well with Magpul furniture colors.

The SABER® MRCS-AR is very lightweight with the short action model weighing only 3.9 lbs.  A “tactical-hunter” version, using a Savage Model 10 FCP with a 24″ medium contour barrel and Bushnell 2.5-16x42mm Elite rifle scope, weighs in under 10 pounds!   APO continues to improve the bolt action rifle shooting experience by continuously focusing on advanced engineering, accuracy, ergonomics, shooter comfort and now cross-over AR accessory appeal with the MRCS-AR.

At the 2016 SHOT Show in booth #31407, Ashbury is displaying versions of the MRCS-AR built up as complete rifles in custom Cerakote finishes.  You’ll can also view the SABER MRCS-AR in the SHOT Show’s New Products Section.  For more information about Ashbury Precision Ordnance Mfg., our line of modular rifle chassis systems, precision rifles, custom pistols and long range shooting accessories, please visit the Ashbury Web Portal. Also, please visit us at the 2016 SHOT Show in booth #31407 located on the upper level in the Law Enforcement section of the exhibition.

SilencerCO’s ATF 41P Ruling Response

After reviewing the almost ten thousand comments from loyal Second Amendment supporters such as yourself, the ATF came back with answers to those comments and a ruling on 41P.  The ruling weighs in at 248 pages.  In the interest of providing you with the information you need without having to spend hours reading it yourself, we have provided a summary below:

  • We will not see any changes take effect until 180 days after the official ruling has been published in the Federal Register.  The ruling has not been published at this point.

  • This ruling is not retroactive and will not apply to applications that are in pending status, or to previously approved applications for existing legal entities and trusts holding NFA items.  Anything that is in process before the effective date will be grandfathered under the current rules (Page 198).

  • Once the final ruling goes into effect, the CLEO certification rule will change to simply CLEO notification for all silencer purchases – whether through a trust, LLC, or as an individual.

  • Once the ruling goes into effect, the responsible persons in a trust or LLC must have a background check completed which will require fingerprinting and photographs, much like when an individual purchases a silencer today.

  • The ruling provides a clear answer in regards to what happens when a person or entity that owns a trust dies.  The person who is authorized to dispose of the property of an estate may possess a firearm or other item (such as a silencer) that is registered to a decedent during the term of probate without such possession being treated as a transfer under the NFA.  Also, any transfer of the NFA item to any beneficiary of the estate is tax exempt.

Bottom line: Once this ruling is officially published, things will continue as they are for 180 days – ATF, 41Pso don’t wait any longer to get your trust and silencer(s) – paperwork in process at the end of the 180 days will be grandfathered.

As always, we will keep you up-to-date with any new information as soon as it becomes available to us. If you’d like to review the entire ruling, it is available for download at https://www.atf.gov/file/100896/download

The Great Gun Control Debate Of 2016

Some of our readers noted that over the Holidays we neglected to produce our customary Friday shoot-the-shit, this was by design. Selecting shoot-the-shit topics kills an inordinate amount of brain cells and the Holiday Season is refresh time for us. So, this is our first shoot-the-shit for 2016.

For our new readers, a shoot-the-shit is an unstructured presentation and discussion where you the reader can make any assertion without supporting details, you can use profanity without fear of censure, you can insult anyone you wish OR you can change the subject altogether. In a bombastic display of arrogance, we believe that our shoot-the-shits have the same efficacy as sitting in front of a moron who studied a behavioral science because they needed to understand themselves while paying $300 an hour. You will never see an invoice from this site for your shoot-the-shit participation.

We selected the hackneyed Gun Control Issue because it’s replete with emotion, all out misinformation, omissions and half-truths. The gun violence problem needs to be addressed; that’s a common objective on both sides of the argument. The disagreement rests with its solutions. As a manager, I have never successfully resolved a problem without looking at all of its drivers so I try to do the same thing with the gun control debate.

Crime in total and violent crime more specifically is a behavioral problem and as law enforcement professionals know its mechanisms are many. The availability of one tool or the unavailability of another is not a deterrent, a principle well understood by economists; in fact, its formal name is substitution. Someone who wants to commit a crime or inflict violence will do so whether they have access to a firearm or not. So we get down to the behavioral component.

To best address behavior, look out the window at a crowded street and pick out the emotionally disturbed. I suppose if you observe someone bashing their head against a well while running around naked you could identify that individual as emotionally distressed or could you? It may very well be a student pledging TEΦ (TEP). Emotional distress is very complex, it can result from prolonged conditioning, it can be purposely induced or it could be a random physiological event. A person has a car accident and the prospect of higher insurance premiums on an already stressed budget may be sufficient to trigger a violent episode. So addressing behavior to deal with violence is pie in the sky by virtue of the vast human diversity. Maybe we should medicate the water supply! Not very realistic and my approach would be to revive parental supervision. Regrettably we’ve tasked government at an increasing rate to look out for our kids which is at the cornerstone of many of our social problems. Newtown Connecticut is the classical case.

Not to diminish the Newtown tragedy, more bad information has and continuous to be dispensed about its details and causations than we can keep track of; all for no reason other than to garner support for gun bans based on emotion as opposed to intellect. Much of the problem is a media that has become lazy and in the interest of ratings have become megaphones for political agendas. The Sandy Hook tragedy triggered unfounded and unsupported details to suggest that Adam Lanza illegally purchased the guns and ammunition used in the commission of his heinous crime.  Prior to the release of the “Report of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Danbury on the Shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School and 36 Yogananda Street,Newtown, Connecticut” on December 14, 2012, suffering victims, misinformed citizens and gun control zealots wanted Bushmater sued, Dick’s Sporting Goods closed, on and on. The official State Attorney’s report, which you can read here, paints a much different picture. In fact on page – 2 the State Attorney States…

“All firearms were legally purchased by the shooter’s mother. Additionally, ammunition of the types found had been purchased by the mother in the past, and there is no evidence that the ammunition was purchased by anyone else, including the shooter.”

In light of this comprehensive report, the media, gun control zealots and elected officials insist that Adam Lanza was able to acquire his arsenal. If anything can be said about Sandy Hook is that it was a gross failure of parental supervision. Mrs. Lanza knew that she was cohabitating with a deeply disturbed child and furthermore failed to secure her firearms and ammunition. To date, the details surrounding Sandy Hook continue to be misrepresented.

One of the recently revised gun control arguments being advanced is the “mass shooting” statistics. Prior to 2015 gang related mass shootings were excluded from that number, which is probably the correct way to analyze the data; however, the  increased number of mass shootings resulting from counting gang related homicides plays well to peoples’ fears rather than their intellect.

The FBI does an impressive job of collecting and compiling data. In 2011, the agency produced a superb report “2011 National Gang Threat Assessment – Emerging Trends” that has to be read if you want to understand the magnitude and impact of gang related gun violence. Aside from the magnitude, much of the most interesting reading we’ve done is the FBI’s documentation of how gangs acquire guns. If you are in law enforcement, professional journalist or simply want to know what you’re talking about this is a must read. In December of 2012, we wrote a short piece that gives you a snap shot of what’s in the FBI’s Assessment. You can read that here.

So, in closing our approach to gun violence in America is this:

  1. Reward parental supervision.
  2. Tackle the gang elements.
  3. As a young man, going through school, I had the option of attending marksmanship classes through ROTC or school teams. Why not have our kids instructed in that manner such that they are aware of the the dangers and the implications of gun violence. I’d be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts the NRA would be willing to support that concept.

Solving problems require critical not emotional thinking!

Have a great weekend! Get out to the range, brush up some of those skill sets and have fun with your friends and families!

Scopecoat Acquires Slideboot

Virginia Beach, Va. (January 2016) – Scopecoat LLC, makers of patented optics protection for transportation and storage, has announced its acquisition of Slideboot, a handgun slide cover company previously owned by Gunhugger Enterprises, LLC of Phoenix, Arizona.

Slideboot was developed to eliminate the need for gun rugs or traditional plastic boxes when transporting handguns to the range, in the vehicle or while in safe storage.  The soft neoprene cover protects the slide and sights from dings, nicks and scratches.  The form fitting Slideboot saves space in the range bag or safe and as an added benefit the neoprene is not affected by oils so you can clean and treat your firearm and store it in a Slideboot without oils migrating to other surfaces within the safe.  The custom fit Slideboot stretches onto the slide easily and can be removed quickly for full access to the weapon.

The Slideboot line consists of seven custom sizes supporting the majority of striker fired and 1911 handguns available.  Made from high quality neoprene Slideboot comes with a variety of colors and can be customized with logos to support agency, association or club activities.

“The Slideboot line fits extremely well into the Scopecoat family of products.” Terry Naughton, president of Scopecoat explained. “Both product lines are American-made in our factory in Arizona. Both use high tech neoprene materials for a perfect fit.  And, both provide excellent protection against damage, dust and moisture. The addition of Slideboot supports our growing dealer network and the initial reaction at retail has exceeded our expectations.  We are seeing Slideboot displayed on firearms in the gun counter and used for nightly storage protecting inventory investments. Once it is seen in action the Slideboot becomes an easy accessory sale.”

Scopecoat is expanding and dealer inquiries are welcome. Interested dealers can contact Scopecoat via email at info@scopecoat.com or by calling 1 (757) 689-6064.

Crimson Trace Introduces Its Patented LiNQ System

Imagine a weapon mounted laser/light combination that can be controlled wirelessly, Crimson Trace did just that. The company has just announced its new LiNQ® System. This wireless and remote operation system utilizes a powered control grip to activate and operate a forward—or remotely located—light and laser sight module. The two-piece LiNQ System is designed to equip and upgrade nearly all standard long guns with rails and replaceable pistol grips.

Crimson Trace LNQ-100 LinQ System for Rifle Ghosted

The patented LiNQ (LNQ-100) System’s leading feature is a replaceable AR/MSR-style compatible pistol grip that houses the system’s control circuitry and operating battery. That grip wirelessly communicates with the rail-mounted, or remotely located, laser sight and light module.

When the module and grip are actively communicating—and linked—via a secure Crimson Trace developed interface, a solid green light illuminates on the grip’s side panel. If the grip is searching for the partner light/laser module, the user will see a flashing green light. If the control grip has lost connectivity with the partnered laser/light module, there will be a constant red light on the grip’s side panel. These indicators are easy to see, and the operation buttons are easy to find and engage. The system operates on easy-to-purchase standard CR2 and CR123 Lithium batteries.

Crimson Trace LNQ-100 LinQ System Grip Left View

The output light/laser module is similar to Crimson Trace’s popular Rail Master Pro units. Adding to the innovation features are an activation button located on the back of the remote laser and light module that permits use of the laser and light features without the LiNQ control grip installed on the firearm or located within communication range. The remote module provides these operation options:

  • Light and laser together
  • Laser only (red and green laser models will be available)
  • Light only (the innovative LED light has a 300-Lumen output)
  • Laser and strobe/pulsing light

The LiNQ control grip and modules have been rigorously laboratory- and field-tested for possible interruptions and communication challenges. The units have also passed numerous drop, dust and moisture tests. The two-piece system was also reviewed and tested by some of America’s top gun writers and firearms industry experts during the development phase. The product easily installs onto nearly any standard AR/MSR platform rifle commercially sold today without special gunsmithing skills. The attachment process requires removing the current grip, installing the new Crimson Trace LiNQ System powered grip in its place, and then inserting the securing screw. It’s that simple. All necessary wrenches and batteries are provided.

The light/laser module will attach securely to standard M-1913 Picatinny and Weaver-style rails. This unit can also be engaged with the easy-to-operate Crimson Trace Instant Activation button. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price will be $549 for the LiNQ System package, and it will be widely available for purchase in mid-year 2016. Russian AK-107

The AK-107 is a new design fitted with a counter inertia reciprocating system. The objective is to use mechanics to counter the normal recoil impulse and its subsequent deleterious effects. So, in the AK-107 Kalashnikov Concern uses an opposing reciprocating mass to counterbalance the effects of recoil. We agree with Larry that this is an impressive weapon system.

Galil ACE (GAP39) RECALL

Galil ACE (GAP39) RECALL

IWI US is conducting a recall of all Galil ACE (GAP39) pistols that have a receiver with a 3-pin (3-hole) fire control group construction. While these pistols cannot fire automatically, BATF&E has historically held that AK type receivers with 3-pin (3-hole) fire control groups are, by definition, machine gun receivers.

Accordingly, all owners (FFL Dealers or Consumers) of a GAP39 pistol must return their firearms to IWI US, Inc. immediately for either a full refund or you can opt for replacement with a 2-pin (2-hole) pistol within 90 to 120 days.

FFL Dealers and/or Consumers must include a copy of an invoice or receipt with the returned firearm. IWI US cannot issue a refund without a receipt.

There are no safety issues involved with this recall.

FFL Dealers and Consumers should contact IWI US, Inc. at (717) 695-2081, email recall@iwi.us or write the company at:

IWI US, Inc., Attn. GAP39, Recall P.O. Box 126707 Harrisburg, PA  17112

IWI US, Inc. will issue a Return Authorization number (RA#) and will issue a “Call Tag” for UPS to pick up the firearm(s) at no cost to the FFL Dealer or Consumer. Returned firearms must have a RA# or they will be refused.

Please allow up to 4 weeks to receive your refund

Dead Air Mask .22 Suppressor Named Editor’s Choice by Shooting Sports Retailer

Lawrenceville, Ga. (December 2015) – Dead Air Armament is proud to announce that its Mask .22 Suppressor has received the honor of being named Editor’s Choice by Shooting Sports Retailer magazine in its December 2015 issue.

“The Mask is just a hoot to shoot. We’ve run it for weeks on a Smith & Wesson M&P 22C using an EWK Arms 1/28-inch thread adaptor with great results and we’ve shot it with a Plinker Arms .22 upper on our AR lower to the grins and giggles of new AR shooters at the range,” said Christian Lowe, the editor of Shooting Sports Retailer.

In addition to being able to suppress a rifle to about 115 decibels, the Mask .22 Suppressor was praised for being durable, lightweight and easy-to-maintain. Lowe was particularly impressed with the Mask .22s sealed baffle construction. The .22 LR round is notoriously dirty and gunky and has been known to “weld up” a suppressor. The Mask .22’s sealed baffle design prevents this from happening and makes the suppressor easy-to-clean and maintain.

A look at the internal baffle system of the Mask .22

“When we designed the Mask .22 we didn’t cut any corners or take any shortcuts. I designed it with the comfort and enjoyment of the shooter as my first and only goal. I’m glad that Shooting Sports Retailer enjoyed our can enough that they named it Editor’s Choice,” commented Mike Pappas, founder of Dead Air.
