WITH HECKLER & KOCH AT SHOT SHOW 2016

DSC_0265

HK VP9 9mm striker fired pistol. I had the opportunity to fire the VP9 at media day. This pistol is typical HK – nothing is overlooked. I particularly liked the slide serrations and the charging supports. The replaceable back strap and grip panels give the VP9 a custom fit feel. The pistol sits low in the hand with excellent factory sights.

HK announced the VP40 late in 2015. This pistol offers all of the same features as the VP9 but chambered in the more potent .40S&W. The new VP40 will undoubtedly see great acceptance in the LE community where the .40 S&W is ubiquitous. Send some rounds downrange with the VP40 and experience minimal recoil; in fact, felt recoil was very close to its 9mm brethren.

The cat’s meow for me was the MR762 A1.  This rifle is very near to the top of a very short list of 7.62 x 51 semiautomatic rifles. The rifle has an excellent trigger and superb ergonomics  and a full length rail system on a key mod handguard system that simply rocks

Last but not least was HK’s interpretation of Boba Fett , or maybe it’s HK’s vision of TALOS. Who knows but it was cool nevertheless.

WITH ARC’TERYX LEAF AT SHOT SHOW 2016

DSC_0160

Readers unfamiliar with the ARC’TERYX brand, I’ll devote a paragraph to introducing them. The company derives its names from ARCHAEOPTERYX LITHOGRAPHICA which is sometimes referred to by its German name Urvogel (“original bird” or “first bird”).

Fossil of complete Archaeopteryx, including indentations of feathers on wings and tail

ARCHAEOPTERYX is a genus of bird-like dinosaurs that is transitional between non-avian feathered dinosaurs and modern birds. The name derives from the ancient Greek ἀρχαῖος (archaīos) meaning “ancient”, and πτέρυξ (ptéryx), meaning “feather” or “wing”. The photo on the right is an actual specimen residing in Berlin GmbH.

This Canadian company has built a global brand by producing very pricy; very high performance outdoor garments and equipment. The best way to view ARC’TERYX is that you get what you pay for period.

DSC_0158ARC’TERYX also expanded into the Law Enforcement and Armed Forces space with the company’s ARC’TERYX LEAF brand. You never want to skip a LEAF exhibit because the product is so functional and so well executed that you’ll want to spend time there. Consistent with that theory, I spent a good bit of time checking out the LEAF goods.

Now, I know that most of our readers don’t get excited over an assault suite but we do; especially when its is so well designed and FR to boot. You may not see this as a Ralph Lauren creation, but if you like assault suites you’ll appreciate the external waist band with Velcro® adjustment tabs, mesh vents under arms, belt loops that fit a riggers belt, removable and articulated soft knee and elbow pads that fit into integrated pockets and last but not least Velcro aplenty throughout. Hey, what’s not to like here? How about its $600+ price point.

DSC_0156

Our model on the right is a fully accessorized operator with a kickass black Naga Hoody, H150 riggers belt and XFUNCTIONAL pants. Total cost excluding shoes is right around $480. That’s the price for wearing the best and you deserve it!

If your unfamiliar with ARC’TERYX LEAF save you shekels and give them a try. It is top of the line kit and apparel.

KALASHNIKOV USA BOOTH WITH THE KR-103, KR-9 and ALFA

DSC_0280

DSC_0114

I had the Kalashnikov USA booth on the must see list because I was very interested in checking out the company’s 103 series Avtomat Kalashnikova. These rifles are gorgeous and a close inspection reveals quality workmanship and components throughout. Try as I may, I waDSC_0115s not able to extract specific details on price and availability. Any production delays may be related to parts availability. However, I will say without reservation that patience is warranted.

Kalashnikov USA is also introducing a KR9 rifle. This is a 9×19  blowback operated rifle which the company will offer in SBR form, pistol and rifle. Hands on the KR9 was a no-no; however, the company is looking forward to 2016 availability at a price point that’s below $1,000 USD. You’ve got to love the Krinkov SBR. We’ll update readers as more details become available.

DSC07202-e1453270383106

Kalashnikov USA also debuted a vastly enhanced and modernized ALFA rifle chambered in 7.62 x 39. Everything on this rifle is new including the receiver and furniture. Full length rails, side rails magazine release and safety selector are all major departures from the vintage AK-47. Rumor has it, that ALFA rifles will be available at some point in 2016.

The company is also producing and shipping SAIGA 12 shotguns and those will in fact be shipping early in 2016.

Arrest Made in Revision-Aided Sting Operation Against Chinese Counterfeit Ballistic Eyewear

Above: Guangzhou Botai U.S. representative and co-owner,Daniel Gong, being taken into custody on the showroom floor at the SIA Snow Show in Denver, CO.

Denver, Colorado (February 1, 2016) –  Revision Military, a world leader in protective eyewear solutions, aided a sting operation to arrest owners and representatives of a Chinese company illegally manufacturing and selling counterfeit eyewear. Revision worked in conjunction with the Dearborn and Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office in Indiana to execute this action. The operation was carried out on January 28th at the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) Snow Show in Denver, Colorado. Guangzhou Botai Optical Visor Co., Ltd. (“Guangzhou Botai”) U.S. representative and part owner, Gong Peiwen, also known as Daniel Gong, was arrested on the showroom floor. Arrest warrants have also been issued for brothers Jiang Xingde and Jiang Xinglin, co-owners of Guangzhou Botai, and Ding Xiaoxia, also known as Crystal Ding, Sales Associate for Guangzhou Botai, which is based in Guangzhou, China. The four are facing six felony charges: counterfeiting, theft, corrupt business practices, conspiracy to commit counterfeiting, conspiracy to commit theft, and conspiracy to commit corrupt business practices. These charges are being brought in Indiana.

Guangzhou Botai has been producing unauthorized counterfeit versions of Revision Military’s Desert Locust™ goggle. Additionally, these fake products have been distributed under the pretense of providing military-grade ballistic protection which presents a hazard to the safety of users expecting the high level eye protection of authentic Revision products. After extensive investigation of the company and testing of the counterfeit products it produces, conclusions showed none of the established industry standards for optical or ballistic quality were met by these unauthorized product knockoffs.

“We were alarmed to learn of these counterfeit products,” said Jonathan Blanshay, CEO of Revision Military, “our customers expect only the best quality and performance from our products. We take pride in exceeding the highest specifications for optics and ballistic impact protection and have invested huge amounts of money to create the best possible protective products. We have built our name and reputation on exceeding standards and will not tolerate inferior, non-authorized knockoff products in the marketplace.”

Mr. Blanshay reiterated that, when it comes to customers being victimized by inferior forgeries, Revision has a zero tolerance approach, stating, “the Revision brand signifies integrity and elite performance. Fraudulent products undermine our core mission to protect the troops who protect all of us. We are taking this matter very seriously and will do everything in our power to ensure that any individuals or corporate entities involved in an illicit enterprise that threatens Revision’s customers and the Revision reputation are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Our mission is to provide the very best protection to soldiers and we will fight to prevent any undermining of that promise to global warfighters.”

Revision Military maintains all intellectual property rights on all Revision products – rights that are total and international. This includes the distinctive Desert Locust goggle, Revision’s flagship goggle line first launched in 2006 that has proven immensely popular and highly regarded for its superior ballistic protection, craft, and comfort. Revision’s products are designed, manufactured, and tested in-house at state-of-the-art, certified facilities. All of Revision’s protective eyewear has consistently and unequivocally exceeded global military-grade testing requirements and has been proven in action around the world. For additional information, please contact Greg Maguire, gmaguire@revisionmilitary.com, or, Dearborn and Ohio County Prosecutor, Aaron Negangard anegangard@dearbornohioprosecutor.com. The fact that the defendants have been charged with crimes are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

About Revision:

Revision develops and delivers purpose-built protective soldier equipment for military use worldwide. The company, which began with eyewear, has expanded to face, head and torso protection as well as energy storage and power management products, continues to develop innovative capabilities for integrated, performance-enhancing soldier systems.  To that end, Revision brings together the most advanced expertise, state-of-the-art facilities and finest technical minds. ASHBURY PRECISION ORDNANCE RSTA-II AT SHOT SHOW 2016

Another company needing little in the way of introduction is Ashbury Precision Ordnance. The company has built its reputation building some extraordinary precision rifles, advanced chassis and a number of accessories integral to the tactical precision shooter.

This year, I had the opportunity to checkout the company’s RSTA-II tripod head. Proficiency in shooting from a tripod is essential to a comprehensive skillset. The problem has been that tripod heads, of most commercial design, are built for photographic equipment. Until APO’s introduction of the RTSA-II, mounting a rifle securely to a tripod was fraught with issues like freedom of movement, especially on steep angle shots or when panning to track the target. Large caliber precision rifles often weigh much more than what a conventional tripod head is designed to support. For example, a .50 BMG rifle with optics, full magazine, thermal or night vision optics and laser designator is well over 30 lbs. Most commercial tripod heads have a practical limit of 20 lbs. or less. This limitation is what prompted the Hog Saddle from Shadow Tec. With the introduction of the RSTA-II, shooters have a tripod head designed from the ground up to support a large caliber precision rifle with accessories.

The RSTA-II Tripod Head with Rapid Control Handle (RCH) can be set up for right or left hand control, and provides a positive locking ±35 degree head which completely holds a 25+lb long gun using a MIL-STD 1913 rail grabber, Pig Saddle or APO AnyPoint Bipod/Tripod Mount. RSTA-II heads independently attach to many quality tripods ( we recommend using the Manfrotto 055XPROB)

Badger Ordnance At SHOT Show 2016

DSC_0021

Badger Ordnance has done more to improve on the Remington 700 platform than any other company on the planet, and the author of that success story is Marty Bordson. His company’s rails, scope mounts and scope rings adorn the rifles of some of the most prestigious tactical and military units in the world. One would think that as successful as he is, Marty would be aloof – not one iota; in fact, if you approach Marty with questions you’ll walk away with in-depth answers. If you are an LE or military sniper or long range precision rifle enthusiast Marty’s company, Badger Ordnance, needs no introduction.

For 2016, Badger Ordnance departs from its broad line of mounting hardware and bottom metal to introduce a complete rifle in two models, the M134 and M134 Mod1 Compact Rifles. The M134 will be chambered in .308 or .260; the Mod 1 in 300 Blackout. The M134 is built on Badger’s own M2013 action while the Mod 1 will feature the Remington 700 action. The stock is a joint venture between Manner and Badger Ordnance constructed from carbon fiber for stiffness and light weight and features a seven position adjustable butt plate.

DSC_0014The M134 is built on Badger’s M2013 Short Action (also available in LA and .338 Lapua)  machined from 4143 Steel. What I like most is the bolt’s six locking lugs bolt achieved using three 2 lug patterns. The action features a 20 MOA MIL STD 1913 base as standard equipment. The rifle is fed by a  Detachable Magazine System and Accuracy International AW 10 round magazines. Shooters will have a choice of two barrel lengths 14.25 “ terminated in a pinned and welded muzzle device to satisfy NFA requirements and a 16” barrel length that will be terminated in 5/8 x 24 threads for suppressor attachment or other muzzle devices.

Other nice features include a I2/Thermal mounting system forward of the scope rail. The mount is implement “a la cap”; if you don’t want the mount simply detach it from its imbedded mount included as part of the stock. Marty has also equipped the 6 o’clock forearm with a Picatinny rail for bipods or tripod attachment systems and QD cups port and starboard.

We don’t like speculating on anything if for no other reason than journalistic integrity, but I know that there are overactive salivary glands among the readership ergo…

  • Availability – probably Q3 2016
  • Pricing – North of $3500

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH THE GLOCK MOS

DSC_0222

New for 2016, Glock introduced the MOS series of Glock pistols. MOS, which stands for Modular Optical System, is in simplest terms a modified slide with a set of 4 mounting plates to allow the installation of micro red dot sights like the Docter, EOTech, Leupold Delta Point, Trijicon RMR and other popular models.

This is an outstanding offering as factory Glock sights aren’t much to get excited about, and being able to mount a micro red dot sight on your Glock without having to machine down the slide is where it’s at for me.

THE MOS configuration is available for the following models

  • 9mm: G17 Gen 4, G19 Gen 4 and G34 Gen 4
  • .40 S&W: G35 Gen 4
  • .45 ACP: G41 Gen4
  • 10 MM: G40 Gen 4

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH ROMTE Short Circuit Targets

DSC_0165

ROMTE is an Israeli company offering a interesting target / live fire training system. Whereas other systems use reactive steel plates or impact sensing technologies, the ROMTE Short Circuit Targets consist of a conductive mesh sandwiched between two layers of paper based material upon which the target is imprinted; for instance, silhouettes, full torso, head and shoulders, hostage or simply numbered targets as show in the photo.

The target itself has conductive strips which make contact with base which houses a 2.4 Ghz. transmitter. The transmitter is wirelessly connected to a control / display module. When the bullet penetrates the target, the copper or lead projectile instantaneously creates a short circuit in the conductive mesh. This event, is transmitted back to the control / display module. Because a mesh is basically a grid, the point of impact can be precisely identified and if the shot hits paper but missed the target zone (s), the control module will record a miss. The control / display module also supports a number of timers and engagement sequencing that can be used to enhance the training experience.

DSC_0166

Liad Segev  was kind enough to take me through the complete system. One of the features that I liked most is that the shooter can enable or disable specific zones on the target. For example, looking at the silhouette on the right, the shooter, range officer or instructor can disable any given zone on the target. A hit in the disabled zone is simply not registered by the control / display module.

Targets are sold separately but a starter system can be put together for just over $800 and it’s scalable to meet whatever needs you may have. This is the perfect system for sniper and counter-sniper training where range personnel are not available to retrieve targets or record shooter performance, tape holes, etc. Each target is good for about 2000 hits(roughly) and bullet impacts through an existing hole are recorded and displayed as well. If the hole is sufficiently large the bullet will not short the mesh, which is quite obvious.

DSC_0205

I asked Liad what the maximum operational (farthest distance from target to display / control module) range of the system was, to which he responded 1000 meters. I haven’t tested it to confirm his statement but I think, given how much commercial grade electronics operate in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, is optimistic in urban surroundings. However, in rural settings or the remote ranges in a military installation 1000 meters saves a great deal of walking or driving!

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH CMMG

DSC_0154

I’ve been wanting to check out the CMMG MK47 riles for a while now. These rifles are chambered in 7.62 x 39 and feed from your garden variety AK magazine. CMMG had selective fire models on hand which made my visit even more enjoyable. Contributing to that enjoyment was the great hospitality from the whole CMMG crew.

The MK47 is offered in a variety of models; AKS13, AKS8, AKS8 NFA, MK47K NFA M47 Pistol, a couple of California models and the Mutant. Over the years, CMMG has developed a reputation for quality and value. The company has also been on the leading edge of innovation.

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH 3M PELTOR

DSC_0141

I made a quick stop at the 3M Peltor stand to check out the 3M™ PELTOR™ Tactical Earplug, which turned out to be a complete gas, and I’ll extend my apologies to the 3M employee on site for the harassment.

Upon my arrival, I picked up the kit, which was in a closed box, I tried for 5 minutes straight to open the box with no success. I then handed the box to another individual visiting with 3M; he too was unable to open the box and passed it along to his colleague who also failed to open the box. He then hands the box to the 3M employee who immediately opens the box. Needless to say everyone blasted the poor guy!

For hygienic reasons there was no practical way to test drive these Earplugs. Fortunately, a Media Day attendee stopped at the 3M stand just in the nick of time to share her experience with the Earplug. The feedback was positive commenting on fit and function. She was also gracious enough to allow me to photograph her earplugs. These are the features…

  1. Rechargeable electronic earplugs help reduce loud noise while amplifying low-level sounds.
  2. One-button operation turns unit on and off and selects high or normal volume setting.
  3. Lithium-Ion battery provides up to 16 hours of continuous operation between charges.
  4. Portable charging case powered by 3 AA alkaline batteries or USB (Micro B) port.
  5. Tactical earplugs and portable charging station (with cover and USB ports closed) are IP67 compliant and water resistant (immersion of up to 1 meter for 30 minutes).
  6. Innovative microphone port design helps protect eartips against water ingress.

A SHOUT-OUT TO DELTA AIRLINES

It’s the Friday after SHOT Show and I still have over 1000 photos to process and a box full of product literature to summarize for our readers but I do want to take a few minutes to complement Delta Airlines. So this week’s shoot-the-shit topic will be a shout-out to the Delta Airline pilots. As with all shoot-the-shit topics, readers are free to make any unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether.

To make a long story short…

My flight to Shot Show consisted of two legs Tampa to LA and LA to Las Vegas. The TPA to LA cockpit crew was awesome. We were cleared for takeoff application of power was smooth and as soon as we reached V1 for the equipment and weight they established the precise attitude for a smooth climb. I’ve been on flights from competing airlines were the pilots get overzealous applying excessive elevator so to correct they need to put the aircraft in a nose dive and pickup airspeed. Now they have too much airspeed with the landing gear still extended which creates unnecessary vibrations. These Delta pilots flew that aircraft like a boss!  In route we had all kinds of weather and any altitude excursions to avoid turbulence were nice and easy. I mean perfect!

Landing in LA was equally well executed. I’ve been on flights were the pilot is below glide path on final approach and they have to frantically add thrust to avoid landing on the runway localizers instead of the threshold. However, now their speed is too high and 50 feet off the deck they deploy airbrakes, which of course causes the aircraft to pancake on the runway – its like landing on a fucking aircraft carrier and a little hard on the landing gear. The only  thing missing is the arresting gear! These Delta pilots had their speed down pat and the aircraft settled right down on the runway like a gentleman.

The LA to Vegas crew was equally competent! Nice job Delta Airlines!

To all of our readers, whether your travel plans are domestic or international fly Delta, a class operation hands down.

Please have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Get out to the range or just have a little fun with your friends and family. As always we love hearing from you so don’t hesitate to leave us a comment or e-mail.

We’ll be adding three to four posts per day as we work to get out the Shot Show details, so stay with us as we get the word out. If you have any Shot Show questions be sure to send them our way.

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE ON THE LONG RANGE SHOOTING LINE

DSC_0091

This is clearly my favorite  segment of Media Day because it presents me with the opportunity to shoot some of the best long range tactical rifles in the world.  Beretta, Ashbury Precision, Bergara, Barret and several others live here. All of these rifles are exceptional in every respect. The SAKO TRG 22 sporting a Burris XTR II was dialed in to a 960 yard target (8.9 mils). The only thing it needed was another .3 mils right. Hearing that splat on steel 4 out of 5 sounded good. I may have impressed the Beretta Rep. and you can’t ask for much more than that.

I then moved over to the Lancer Systems shooting position where Ben Deroner took me through the Lacer Systems L30 rifle.

DSC_0098

The L30 is a sweet shooter built on the Lancer receiver, equipped with Lancer’s carbon fiber handguard, Viper muzzle brake and flared magazine well. A little about the L30 rifle…

The Lancer L30 Rifles was developed to introduce a lightweight, highly precise and aesthetically flawless AR-10 style rifle. Each gun is chambered in 7.62X51 caliber and accepts the L7 Advanced Warfighter Magazine and other SR25/DPMS pattern magazines. (The L30 LTR rifle is also supplied in 6.5 Creedmoor). The L30 receiver and carbon fiber handguard,  provides a very stable platform with excellent control.

The upper receiver is sold as a set with the lower receiver. The lightweight carbon fiber hand guard mounts directly to the upper receiver, for a free floating handguard system.  The 12 o’clock rail is modular, connecting directly to the upper receiver and extending over the handguard. The sight rail is available in multiple lengths and with or without a 20MOA taper.

Lancer’s Viper Brake

DSC_0100

Lancer’s Viper Brake is a “tunable” brake/compensator designed for precision shooters. It’s engineered with a blast chamber and four tunable jets to effectively reduce barrel movement, making for faster follow on shots. Different sized jets are supplied so the operator can tune the downward force. Angled blast baffles reduce recoil, further stabilizing the rifle. Made from stainless steel for 6.5 chambered rifles utilizing a 5/8-24 thread pitch. Includes a crush washer and twelve tuning jets.

Next stop along the firing line was Barrett to take a closer look at the MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design)

DSC_0116

The MRAD is an excellent example of Roni Barrett’s genius. Here is a rifle with a user-changeable barrel system (two torx screws) offering chamberings in .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .308 Winchester, .260 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor;  with all critical components of match-grade quality. The upper receiver incorporates an integral  21.75 inch M1913 rail with 20 MOA taper. The forward receiver is drilled and tapped for accessory rails to be mounted at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. Barrett’s MRAD is a great weapons system offering superb performance and flexibility. Way to go Barrett!

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH DEAD AIR ARMAMENT

DSC_0080

If ever there was an exhibit that I did not want to miss it was Dead Air Armament. I was hoping they had representation at Media Day because the only way to assess a suppressor is shoot it, period! You can wallow in specifications all day long but to quote a hackneyed cliché  “proof is in the pudding” As expected, Dead Air had its Sandman Line consisting of the S, L and Ti. They also had their GHOST-M centerfire pistol suppressor along with their pingless Flash Hider, Keymount Muzzle Brake and its latest addition to the line of muzzle devices the Pyro Enhanced Muzzle Brake

DSC_0081

For readers not yet familiar with Dead Air Suppressors I’ll summarize by saying that all of their rifle cans are multi-caliber up to and including 300-Win Mag; their centerfire pistol suppressor is also a multi-caliber can 22LR, .300BLK (subsonic), .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 10mm, 9mm.

Below, I had a chance to send some lead downrange via a suppressed AK. The weapon operated quietly and reliably with no evidence of excessive backpressure. The quick attach mount conveys a sense of stoutness that is both reassuring and easy to use.

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH FIRST TACTICAL

DSC_0067

I ran across the First Tactical folks at the Boulder Gun Range and took a real liking to their pack and rifle sleeve arrangement. The pack is First Tactical’s TACTIX pack. It has some very nice features that I’ll list below

  • Fleece-lined hammock eyewear pocket
  • HD spacer mesh with dual density foam shoulder straps and back panel.
    • Positional shoulder straps.
    • Removable internal backboard with posture-conforming aluminum stay may be used as splint, shovel or paddle.
    • Interior dual use hook/loop and web platform for unlimited pouch placement.
      • Concealed drop pocket with hook/loop lining for utility pouch or holster
        • Divided front stash pocket for longer items
          • Repositionable or removable compression straps with side release buckles
            • First Tactical’s Hook & Hang Thru™ System
              • Lynx™ Laser Cut Platform compatible with MOLLE/PALS

I got Cory with First Tactical to model the arrangement for me…

DSC_0072DSC_0073

Rifle sleeves are available in 36”, 42”, and 50”. The entire arrangement is very stable and we did spend some time attempting to destabilize it. My overall impression is excellent kit that is well thought-out with lots of usable features and no frills or fluff. The TA

The pack retails for $179.99 and is available in three colors black, coyote and OD Green. The sleeves sell in matching color for $59.99, $69.99 and $79.99 respectively. For an investment of $250, or less, you get 2470 cubic inches of internal capacity with 500D and 1000D nylon construction and a rifle sleeve of your choosing. Now you’re in business, with some great kit. Check it out!

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH SPRINGFIELD ARMORY SOCOM 16 CQB

DSC_0065

Just when you thought the M1A has seen its day, this old warhorse proves it’s not ready for the farm just yet. Of any military weapon system, the M14 / M1A has a glorious history. When SOF needed a sniper platform that could handle the rigors of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, they turned to the M14 / M1A platform. It was subsequently enhanced with the EBR chassis from Sage International Ltd. The M14/M1A has served our armed forces and international partners since 1959.

Springfield Armory has been building M14 rifles since their inception and in 1974 they introduced the M1A semiautomatic version of the M14. Over the years, Springfield Armory has produced a number of variants: National Match, Super Match, M21, M25, SOCOM 16, Scout Squad, SOCOM II.

For 2016 Springfield introduced the SOCOM 16 CQB shown below. The new rendition features a 16” barrel, a six position AR style adjustable buttstock, the pistol grip is AK patterned so any of the tactical AK grips will fit and M-LOK rail system at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The rifle ships with iron sights or Vortex® Venom Red Dot. The rifle is lightweight and very handy but I did miss the longer sight radius of the full length M1A. However, equipped with a reflex sight this baby can deliver 7.62×51 punch in a close quarters environment.

You should start seeing the SOCOM 16 CQB first quarter 2016. M.S.R.P. will vary with configuration.

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH WALTHER’s PPQ

DSC_0220

Handguns are like well made suites, if they fit well they help you look good; such is the case with Walther’s latest addition to the company’s line of fine firearms. The Walther PPQ is the first .45 caliber pistol produced by Walther in 100+ years. Shooting this pistol can only be described as a joy. The hand filling grip sits nicely in the palm of your hand and with its sweeping beavertail the PPQ sits low in the hand, promoting ease of sight alignment and control. I’ve fired just about every polymer framed pistol on the market but I’ve never experienced a trigger like what you get in the PPQ. This has to be the best trigger of any production, polymer frame shooter. All in all, Walther’s PPQ gets 5 stars from this reviewer. Prospective buyers get an added bonus and that is an MSRP of $699.

Get one!

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH THE RUGER PRECISION RIFLE AND ITS LATEST Ruger 22/45 LITE

DSC_0056

The Ruger Precision Rifle is an amazing value at an MSRP of $1,399. This rifle is an outstanding choice as an entry to mid level precision platform. Ruger included a fully adjustable buttstock, pistol grip and a full length Key-Mod rail system. This bolt action rifle is capable of sub MOA performance with your favorite load. The trigger was crisp and brakes like a glass rod. The action is not as smooth as say a Blaser or Sako but very acceptable given its price point. If you’re considering an entry into tactical precision shooting, you’ll want to give Ruger’s Precision Rifle serious consideration. It’s hard to imagine a better apportioned platform.

The Ruger Precision Rifle will be available in .308, 6.5 Creedmore and .243. The .308 version is available now with the other chamberings later this year.

DSC_0052

Ruger also had its new for 2016 model 3912 Ruger 22/45 LITE. This little shooter has a ton of features worth summarizing

  • Zytel® polymer grip frame.
  • Internal cylindrical bolt construction ensures permanent sight to barrel alignment and higher accuracy potential than conventional moving slide designs.
  • Contoured ejection port and easy-to-grasp bolt ears.
  • Patented loaded chamber indicator that allows for visual confirmation of a loaded or empty chamber.
  • Push button magazine release.
  • Magazine disconnect.
  • Ventilated aluminum receiver that tackles the weight.
  • Threaded barrel (1/2″-28) (thread protector included).
  • MSRP $549

This is a great little shooter and very quiet!

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE WITH FNH USA

DSC_0023

My next stop at the range was the FNH exhibit; there, I was hoping to get hands on their Military Collectors Series. There are three systems that make up the series: M4, M16 and M249S; all of which are street legal replicas of the real McCoy. All of the series member are excellent but the M249S was a hell of a lot of fun. Visitors also had an opportunity to fire the actual 249 SAW.

MEDIA DAY AT THE RANGE–KRISS USA

DSC_0007

My first stop at the range was the KRISS exhibit. KRISS has been a year over year favorite since having the opportunity to test drive the prototype at Blackwater in Moyock, NC. The company has been refining their SMG since then and it is now quite a formidable weapon. Reliability, recoil management and overall ergonomics have been improved. Known as the only game in town if you want a .45ACP SMG, the company is now shipping a 9mm version with other chamberings on the drawing board. Customers can expect to see a .40 S&W in the near future. We define “near” as sometime in 2016.

I’ll summarize my experience firing the 9mm Vector as delectable. Operating the weapon was smooth and easy, controls are well placed and easily accessible and virtually zero muzzle climb in two round burst or full auto – overall an incredible experience!

SILENCERCO WEAPONS RESEARCH RADIUS – A RAIL MOUNTED LASER RANGE FINDER

2016-01-19 05.36.06

This year’s Shot Show, we had the opportunity to get our hands on Silencerco’s Weapons Research Radius, a rail-mounted laser range finder. Besides being the first rail mounted commercial grade laser, the Radius has been designed as an extension of the host weapon. Here are the salient points…

The more common implementation of a laser range finder is a package containing its own optical subassembly. The shooter focuses and sights through the LRF’s eyepiece, fires the laser and reads range in yards or meters. The Radius however is zeroed to the weapon’s optics using an internal visible laser. The shooter does not range by sighting through the Radius; instead, he ranges by sighting through the weapon’s optics. The internal visible aiming laser is aligned with the weapon’s primary sights using windage and elevation adjustments. The visible laser is co-aligned with the IR ranging laser resulting in a perfectly aligned ranging laser. Once zeroed to the weapon, the visible laser can be disabled.

The Radius mounts on any plane, 12 o’clock  through 9 o’clock rail positions, making it highly adaptable. To support that flexibility, Silencerco created a display module that can be removed and rotated to properly orient it for ease of reading – display brightness is also adjustable.

The display module contains the processor and can support implementation of ballistics software. The Radius is also iP68 waterproof rated so it is submersible. The shooter has the option to operate the Radius in continuous mode  and with the proper software package will determine target speed.

The Radius will display 3 ranges, a primary and two secondary range values which as a matter of personal preference should be replaced with just a single value. Silencerco’s approach allows the shooter to detect a bad range value caused by interference from foliage or water. I would prefer to see a different approach where the shooter can set an acceptable standard deviation value during initial Radius setup; then have the Radius provide an average range value with an indicator (* or blinking display) for out of range standard deviation.

For example…

  1. Range 1: 190 (y or m)
  2. Range 2: 333 (y or m)
  3. Range 3: 327 (y or m)
  • Avg. = 283.3 with a standard deviation of 80.88 (y or m)
  • Shooter sets his acceptable sd to 15 (y or m)
  • Radius displays a blinking range of 283.3 (y or m)

Because, the Radius employs a detachable processor, Radius’ possibilities are endless and limited only by software. Although not officially discussed you can expect to see processor modules with other interesting capabilities extending well beyond ballistic calculations.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • POWER: (2) CR123A Lithium Ion Batteries (Included)
  • HEIGHT: 2.30” LENGTH: 5.80” WIDTH: 2.96”

STREAMLIGHT UPs OUTPUT OF SEVERAL POPULAR TLR MODELS

EAGLEVILLE, PA, January 15, 2016–Streamlight® Inc.,  announced that it increased the light output of three TLR® gun-mounted high lumen (HL) lights, the TLR-1 HL®, the TLR-2 HL® and the TLR-2 HL® G. Each of the models now delivers 800 lumens of blinding white light.

The upgraded models give tactical, outdoor and other users full situational awareness by delivering extreme brightness in a wide beam pattern, similar to that of a flood light. The TLR-2 HL also is equipped with a 640-660 nanometer integrated red aiming laser for long-range targeting, while the TLR-2 HL G features a 510-530 nanometer green aiming laser, to improve focusing on targets, particularly in daylight.  All three models also feature strobing capability.

“These lightweight, compact high lumen lights give first responders, outdoor enthusiasts and other users powerful weapon lights that shine extremely bright light in a flood-like pattern, revealing what might be concealed in dark corners or along perimeters,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “They are designed for a wide variety of tactical maneuvers such as clearing a dark room, searching alleys, hunting game or for other outdoor uses.”

The lightweight, compact lights each feature the latest in LED technology, including a shock-proof C4® LED and a special optic that produces a concentrated beam with optimum peripheral illumination. The upgraded lights also now offer 15,000 candela peak beam intensity over a 245-meter beam distance. Each features a high temperature, shock-mounted, and impact-resistant lens.

The lights can be quickly and safely attached to most weapons, without the need for users to put their hands in front of the muzzle.  They mount directly to all MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rails and handguns with Glock-style rails, and offer highly accurate sight repeatability when remounting. A key kit with five interchangeable keys is included with each light to securely fit it to a broad array of weapons.  The strobe feature, which can be disabled, is activated with two or more momentary paddle hits.

The TLR-1 and 2 HL both offer 1.75 hours of continuous run time, while the TLR-2 HL G provides 1.50 hours. All three lights use two included 3-volt, CR123A lithium batteries.  The TLR-1 HL weighs 4.18 ounces, while the TLR-2 HL and the TLR-2 HL G both weigh 4.78 ounces.  All three lights measure 3.39 inches in length.

All of the models are fabricated from 6000 series machined aluminum, feature impact-resistant construction and have been extensively live-fired tested.  The TLR-1 HL is IPX7 rated for waterproof operation to 1 meter for 30 minutes, while the TLR-2 HL and TLR-2 HL G offer an IPX4 rated design for water-resistant operation.  The lights feature an operating temperature range of -40o F to +120o F.

The TLR-1 HL and the TLR-2 HL have an MSRP of $238.68 and $533.46, respectively, and the TLR-2 HL G has an MSRP of $580.00.  Each of the lights comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

What The Hell Happened?

It’s  Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. This week we saw Iran nab 2 U.S. Navy patrol craft and hold 10 of our sailors. Fortunately, all hands were safely returned; we should rejoice that moment but what the hell happen? The DoD identified a navigational problem as the cause for the incident, which quite frankly blows us away.

We spent a good part of our evening pouring over nautical charts of the Persian Gulf and here’s what we can tell you.

  1. Farsi Island, is Iranian territory and sits about 115 nautical miles east of Kuwait.
  2. Iran recognizes a territorial waters limit of 12 nautical miles. That limit applies to its outer islands in the Persian Gulf. So, if you come within 12 nautical miles around Farsi Island you are in Iranian Territorial Waters.
  3. That leaves a 100+ nautical mile passage available to the west of Farsi Island, consisting of a combination of friendly nation territorial waters and international waters, these boats could have used to transit from Bahrain to Kuwait ( approximately  330 nautical miles).
  4. The SOC-R boats, including the command boats have a draft of 2 feet. The shallowest spot we could find, were they to simply follow the Saudi and Kuwaiti coastline, was 4 meters (13 feet), so there was plenty of water below the keel.
  5. So, how the heck did they end up in Iranian territorial waters?

nga_chart_62032

The figure is a nautical chart marked up to illustrate the points we were trying to make above. So what the hell do you think actually happened?

Have a great weekend, be safe and get a little range time in with your buds and family!

Savage Arms Will Introduce New Firearms at SHOT SHOW 2016

Savage Arms

SUFFIELD, Conn. – January 14, 2016 – Savage Arms will introduce several new products at the 2016 SHOT Show. The A22 22 Magnum is one of the most exciting introductions, proven to deliver accuracy and reliability in a semi-automatic magnum rimfire platform. Also debuting for 2016 are several line extensions in the A17 and B.MAG rifle series, as well as adding the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber to many of its AXIS and AXIS II models. In addition, the company is proud to announce the all-new Model 42 Takedown shotgun-and-rifle combination gun and several more new firearms.
Stealing the modern looks of the Savage Arms A17, the first high-performance semi-automatic rimfire specifically designed for the 17 HMR cartridge, Savage adds a new model to the series. The A22 Magnum is chambered for 22 WMR and features the same delayed-blowback semi-automatic action as the original A17.
Savage Arms A17’s unique delayed-blowback action provides safe, reliable operation with standard 17 HMR loads. New 2016 target models feature heavy barrels and gray wood laminate stocks for updated styling and increased accuracy.
Savage’s B.MAG was built around the 17 Win. Super Magnum cartridge, which creates unprecedented rimfire velocities of up to 3,000 feet per second. For 2016, three new models have been added to the B.MAG lineup: Target Beavertail, Heavy Barrel and Sporter.
Savage Arms has added nine new rifles chambered for the hot, flat-shooting 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge. They include the new 16 Lightweight Hunter, AXIS, AXIS LH, AXIS XP, AXIS XP Camo, AXIS XP Stainless, AXIS II XP, AXIS II XP Stainless and AXIS II XP Hardwood.
The new Model 42 Takedown breaks down with simple push of one button and includes an Uncle Mike’s Go Bag so you can easily transport it anywhere. The Model 42 Takedown is an easy-to-use, break-open combo gun that fires rimfire rounds from the top barrel and .410 bore shotgun shells from the bottom.
These products and many more can be viewed during SHOT at the Vista Outdoor booth (#14551), with photos and product details added to the company’s web site after the tradeshow.

GLAD TO SEE OUR SAILORS RETURNED SAFELY

We were all ecstatic with news that our Navy crews were returned home safely and ask the media to cool the slams on the Lieutenant who expressed his thanks to the Iranian Government for the treatment his crew received. He got his people home safe and that is what counts.

As former sailors ourselves, we postulate that the Iranians spoofed their GPS, in fact they were probably running on autopilot and commercial GPS signals. If that was the case and our theory is correct, it points to training issues because an E3 Coxswain could have made that trip on ship’s compass alone to include set and drift correction.

We learn, we improvise and improve.

Welcome Home Crew!

LASER AMMO USA INTRODUCES ITS LATEST LASER TRAINING SOLUTIONS

Great Neck, NY – Affordability and government-agency-level firearm training was what Laser Ammo had in mind when it developed its recent line of Airsoft solutions: the SPIDER adapter; the newly designed-for-2016 LA-FLASH suppressor adapter; and the R.E.A.L. (Recoil Enabled Airsoft Laser) which all offer high level realistic training with full blowback for recoil-enabled training.

“Today you can find an Airsoft replica for most firearms in the market. They are inexpensive, accurate, safe and resemble your everyday 1911’s, M&Ps, Glocks and AR15s – the closest thing to a real firearm. And now, with the new for 2016 SPIDER, FLASH or R.E.A.L., everyone can train with full blowback and immediate feedback.” According to Laser Ammo VP of Business Development and Sales Chen Shoshani, “Offering a cost-effective, safe and ultra realistic experience is the beauty of full blowback laser training. Now what was once only available to government agencies and those with deep pockets can be used by everyday carry shooters.”

Extremely easy to use and install, your Airsoft pistol can continue shooting pellets without taking the SPIDER off.

The Recoil Enabled Airsoft Laser (R.E.A.L) conversion kit includes a replacement drop-in barrel that currently fits the KWA ATP Airsoft pistols. Installation of the R.E.A.L kit is done simply by replacing the stock barrel with Laser Ammo kit assembly.

The LA FLASH is a high-end CNC machined flash suppressor adapter that replaces the stock flash guard on any “off the shelf” Airsoft rifle.

The SPIDER, R.E.A.L. and FLASH are all cost effective, safe to use, easy to install and with no need to modify your Airsoft, These add-ons allow for easy windage and elevation adjustments of the laser for accurate training, Additionally you can use both IR or red visible lasers.
