M4 SAFETY SELECTOR MANIPULATION PRESENTED BY STEVE GILCREST OF SIG SAUER ACADEMY

Proper manipulation is essential to safe weapon handling. Regrettably it’s a skill that is often overlooked by both professional and recreational shooters. I’ve seen shooters dismount the weapon, turn it on its side, operate the safety selector with the support hand index finger and thumb and a number of other variations. This is a technique that needs to be practiced repeatedly with emphasis on operating the safety selector while moving.  Next to muzzle control proper safety manipulation is at the top of my proficiency list.

This is an excellent video but I can do without the music…

SIG SAUER recommends that you seek professional, formal, hands-on instruction before attempting any of these drills.

Steve has 20 years of combined law enforcement and military experience. His military experience consists of eight years of active duty service with the United States Army. His assignments included tours with the 82nd Airborne Division and the United Nations Command Security Battalion Joint Security Area South Korea. His military qualifications include Ranger, Jump Master, Air Assault, and both British and UAE Parachutist badges. Steve has held positions in both the patrol division and community police unit for a large municipal police agency. Additionally he was assigned to the department training unit as the range master specializing in firearms training, use of force, and officer survival training. He holds instructor level certifications in all firearms, Taser, and specialty munitions. He was an Assistant Team Leader with his agency’s SWAT Team. Steve is an active member of professional organizations such as the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA).  Additionally, he is a competitive shooter and member of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and the United States Practical Shooting Association. Steve has also appeared as an expert on the History channel’s popular series, Top Shot in the Season 2, Episode 2, “Shoot or be Shot”.

DIGISCOPING CONTINUED–EXPOSURE

WOW, we made it through another week and we are now ready to kickoff the weekend. It’s been a rough week with some pretty harsh weather: rain, high wind, tornado watches, etc. But, we’ve emerged victorious and we hope you’ve all done the same.

Each Friday we have a shoot-the-shit topic where we discuss everything and anything under the sun, be it gear related or not. As a reader you may, and we encourage you to, participate. That participation is completely unstructured and readers are free to make any unsupported comment, insult anyone you wish, use profanity or change the subject to something else.  This is your moment for mental hygiene, or as we call it, a cerebral laxative. Our approach eliminates the need for you to compensate a group of individuals who’s sole reason for studying the behavioral sciences, in the first place, was to understand themselves; as such, they are living proof that free market economies produce sufficient surpluses to absorb what is otherwise useless.

This Friday, we were going to shoot-the-shit about the GEICO Tarzan commercial. This is the one where Jane asks the monkey if it knows how to get to the waterfall. What’s timely and extraordinary about this commercial is its direct applicability to how Americans are seeing their government, be they Democrat or Republican. Fortunately, we were rescued by a couple of reader questions requesting examples of exposure related issues. So, rather than answering these questions directly we slid our way out of Tarzan to discuss exposure.

I have five pictures below that illustrate the issues you’ll encounter when digiscoping. The photos were taken through a 15x to 45x fixed eyepiece spotting scope with a 65mm objective. The camera is a Nikon DSLR attached to the spotting scope with a camera adapter and T2 nut for a Nikon F-Mount. Recall that in last week’s topic we said that to control exposure when digiscoping with a DSLR we use ASA(ISO) and shutter speed. Why? Because the spotting scope replaces the camera lens; as such there is no aperture adjustment. All of the picture metadata is shown alongside the photo.

Proper exposure is that combination of ASA (ISO) and shutter speed that delivers the most detailed image. By detail I mean color rendition and observable detail in both light and dark parts of the image.

If you look at the three power plant pictures, the image at the bottom is an example of overexposure. It was shot using an ISO of 200 and shutter speed of 1/200th of a second. The image is washed out with poor contrast and total loss of color. The next photo is shoot using an ISO of 200 and a shutter speed of 1/400th of a second. Note that contrast has improved, we see greater detail along the tree line and we begin to see beach details. In the next picture we use a faster shutter speed still at 1/1000th of a second. This photo is slightly underexposed  so it’s a little darker but retains most of the detail. Ergo, the proper exposure for this subject is somewhere between 1/1000th and 1/400th and in my camera that value is 1/500th of a second shutter speed with an ASA (ISO) of 200.

In the power plant set, the other thing that you’ll notice is the effect of haze on image clarity. The spotting scope does not discriminate, it magnifies everything including atmospheric artifacts. Therefore, subjects at great distances will be less sharp than subjects closer to the observation point. Mirage and haze will distort your image significantly.

The last two pictures compare the image of a subject taken at 15X and another at 45x. Your take away from this comparison is that the 15x image is much sharper and brighter with good balance and contrast. Why? True with all variable power spotting scopes, the higher the magnification the lower the light transmission. What differentiates a $3,200 spotting scope from a $400 unit is the quality of its glass and how well it transmits distortion-free light.

This should shed some light on the exposure issue.

The best way for you to approach digiscoping is discovery. Get out there with your friends or family and have a great time. It will be quality time I guarantee you. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

STREAMLIGHT INTRODUCES TLR-6 UNIVERSAL KIT

February 25, 2016–Streamlight® Inc., introduced a Universal Weapon Kit for its TLR-6® handgun light that includes a light/laser module and six interchangeable housings to fit a variety of sub-compact handguns. The housings are designed for use with more than 18 different models of Glock®, M&P Shield™, KAHR®, SIG SAUER® and Kimber® handguns.

The TLR-6, the first light with an integrated red aiming laser for sub-compact handguns, is designed to maximize visibility and targeting capability in a variety of home defense and tactical applications. Streamlight introduced the light — an industry first — in 2015 with a housing designed to fit the trigger guard of Glock® 42 and Glock® 43 handguns.

“We now have expanded the versatility of the TLR-6, with additional body housings that quickly and securely attach to the trigger guard of additional types of sub-compact handguns,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah.  “Now even more tactical and home defense users can attach this light/laser module to their sub-compact handgun of choice and benefit from its targeted bright light, as well as its powerful red aiming laser.”

Importantly, with the light and laser combination attached, users can more readily identify a potential threat before taking any action.

The TLR-6 uses the latest in C4® LED technology to deliver 100 lumens, 2,000 candela and a beam distance of 89 meters.  Its parabolic reflector produces a balance of beam and peripheral illumination. The light features three lighting modes:  LED Only, LED/Laser, and Laser Only, with operating run times of one hour for the LED Only or LED/Laser modes, and 11 hours for the Laser Only mode.  All modes automatically shut off after ten minutes to conserve batteries. The light also uses an integrated 640-660 nm red laser which has an operating temperature range of -20°F to +120°F, permitting usage under a wide variety of weather conditions.

The TLR-6 is powered by two 3 Volt CR-1/3N lithium coin batteries.  It features an integrated battery door that permits batteries to be replaced while the light remains mounted on the gun, and eliminates the need to re-sight the laser after a battery change.

The light is manufactured from durable, impact-resistant engineered polymer.  Depending on the model, it ranges in length from 2.30 to 2.97 inches, and in weight from 1.12 to 1.27 ounces.  It is IPX4 rated for water-resistant operation, and also is impact-resistant tested to one meter.

The TLR-6 Universal Kit is available at an MSRP of $210.00.  It includes one LED/laser module and six interchangeable body housings designed to fit the M&P Shield™ 40 and the M&P Shield™ 9; the Glock® 42 and the  Glock® 43; the Glock® 26, the Glock® 27 and the Glock® 33; the Kimber® MICRO; the SIG SAUER® P238® and the SIG SAUER® P938®; and the KAHR® ARMS MODELS CT9, CW9, CM9, CT40, CW40, CM40, TP9, P9, PM9, TP40, P40, and PM40.

Individual TLR-6 models also are available at an MSRP of $175.00 each.

The TLR-6 comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

STANDARD MANUFACTURING DP-12 DOUBLE BARREL PUMP SHOTGUN

DSC_0193

Before sitting down to share my thoughts on Standard Manufacturing’s DP-12 double barreled shotgun, I wanted to let the concept and what I experienced at SHOT seep in a little, but after much thought I have to say that as well designed and manufactures as the DP-12 is, I’m compelled to describe the concept as a solution waiting on a problem!

The DP-12 finds itself competing with KelTec’s KSG which is shorter in overall length at just over 26 inches, has a dual magazine tube with  a capacity of 6+6+1, a full length rail, bullpup design but lists at an M.S.R.P. of $990. So, the DP-12’s only real advantage over the KSG is in the follow up shot. The DP-12 chambers a shell in both barrels with each pump and is fired by two presses of the trigger. Furthermore, until both barrels are fired the operator is prevented from pumping or cycling the action so if you’re not used to the double trigger pull you may find yourself trying to pump the shotgun after the first shot with no success The basic DP-12 configuration sells for $1395 with other models selling upwards of $1,700.

Standard Manufacturing is positioning the DP-12 in the very competitive, but very lucrative tactical space, but there it finds very stiff competition from Remington and Mossberg; for example, the Remington Model 870 Express7-round tactical shotgun which sell for about $400 in its synthetic stock configuration.

Lastly, I don’t know of very many experienced shooters that would pass on an $1,800 Benelli M4 for a decked out $1700 DP-12.

The DP-12 is an excellent gun, don’t get me wrong on that point, but its philosophy of use is of questionable value based on my needs and my experience. If you like the uncommon, you will definitely have some fun with the DP-12; it has all of the features of an excellent gun with excellent ergonomics.

On the safety side of things, be sure that you follow the operators instructions for clearing the weapon. Remember that you have a second chamber to be cognizant of.

DRONE MAGAZINE

20160220_130016-1

Drone is a new rag printed in the U.K where UAVs are out of the closet in a very big way. Our interest in drones is that they are part of the ISR fabric with a rapidly increasing commercial application. Be it hobby, delivery, security, surveying or aerial photography the UAV is steadily revealing its value.

In the UK, DRONES have become serious business and December 2015, saw the initial launch of the UK Drone Exhibition at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, UK.

Drone enthusiast have come together in clubs to hold drone races and a number of other organized activities. Schools have also popped up that allow students to receive commercial UAV pilot training. Once certified, the student is able to operate UAVs (fixed or rotor) for commercial applications like in-town deliveries. With respect to hobby and / or commercial use of Drones, the EU is further along than in the United States.

20160220_132106It’s no longer the Wild Wild West out there; China, Japan, USA and EU have all announced and implement regulations to control the use of drones. In the United States for example, UAVs meeting specific size and weight guidelines must be registered with the FAA and registration numbers must appear on the drone body. Japan, is using drone deployable nets to capture UAVs operating in restricted airspace.

DIGISCOPING WITH YOUR SPOTTING SCOPE

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Outdoors enthusiasts are prolific users of magnified optics. Everything from monoculars to large spotting scopes are on their list of must have kit. If you are a tactical rifle or long range precision shooter using a spotting scope is not an option. But, how about combining your smart device or digital camera with your spotting scope to document interesting land formations, wildlife or a competition. Enter the topic of digiscoping. All shoot-the-shit rules apply.

Digiscoping, is the hobby of using an optic in front of your tablet, phone or digital camera to extend their focal length. There are numerous approaches ranging from complete farce to Cadillac solutions that don’t make sense unless you are picture taking for National Geographic or The Smithsonian. So, our focus today is how the average man gets into digiscoping and achieve excellent results within a reasonable budget.

What you need to digiscope…

  1. digital camera or smart device
  2. digiscoping camera adapter
  3. spotting scope
  4. tripod

Digital Camera or Smart Device – In 2016, chances are you already have one or both of these so you won’t need to go out and buy something else. However, what you plan on using for taking photos along with your selection of a spotting scope will drive what type of digiscoping adapter you’ll need. In the digital camera world there are basically two broad categories, the point and shoot and the digital single lens reflex (DSLR). Point and shoot cameras have fixed lenses while the Digital SLR has interchangeable lenses and sights through the lens for greater flexibility. Point and shoot cameras will normally top out at around $400. DSLR cameras can run up to $5000 for just the body, for professional grade equipment. The smart device takes two forms the phone with built in camera or the physically larger tablet with a camera. Image size for smart devices generally top out at 8 mega pixels, although 12 mega pixel versions are entering the market. One last piece of information before leaving the camera. Pixel count does not translate to resolution, it pertains to size. A 24 mega pixel camera produces a larger RAW image. Resolution is a function of the glass you’re shooting through.

Spotting Scope – here you have a very wide range of choices, but not all are created equal and I’ll say it right now that you don’t need a Leica or Swarovski to achieve excellent results. Without getting into the straight or angled eyepiece discussion, there are two types of spotting scopes those with removable or interchangeable eyepieces and those with variable power fixed eyepieces. If digiscoping is your principal reason for buying a spotting scope, your best option is to take the removable or interchangeable eyepiece route. You’ll pay a higher price, but you’ll end up with a system that performs very well for you. I’ll give you the why a bit later. If you elect to go with the fixed eyepiece spotting scope it will probably be variable power, for example 20x – 60x, and you’ll want to confirm with the retailer if the manufacturer has a camera mounting adapter for the specific model you’re considering.

Earlier, I said that the spotting scope / camera combination drives your choice of  camera mounting options. Here’s how it all works.

  • The universal approach to attaching a smart device to a spotting scope is to use a device that clamps around the eyepiece; then using vertical and horizontal alignment screws, the operator positions the camera lens at the center of the spotting scope eyepiece.

  • If you’re using a spotting scope with a removable eyepiece, you’ll need to purchase the camera adapter from the scope manufacturer. In addition, you’ll need a T-nut, which is camera mount specific, for example Nikon or Cannon. The T-nut attaches to the spotting scope camera adapter allowing the operator to mount the camera body directly to the spotting scope. This method of camera attachment provides the best results and virtually all professional level work is done using this arrangement. It delivers the crisp sharp focus needed for exceptional quality. It’s also the more expensive approach.

  • If your using a spotting scope with a fixed eyepiece, you’ll need a camera adapter that threads to the spotting scope body over its eyepiece and open on both sides so the operator can adjust magnification levels with a variable power eyepiece. Although this system produces excellent images, sharpness does suffer a bit because the camera is interacting with more levels of glass.

20160218_11184720160218_11211120160218_112228

Tripod – last but not least is the tripod and tripod head. This is the weak link and the brutal truth is that if you don’t have a rock solid support, the spotting scope / camera system will vibrate in wind, or from operator use, resulting in poor image quality. Irrespective of equipment used, vibrations at magnification levels of 15x to 60x will destroy image quality so for that reason I recommend using, at least, a Manfrotto tripod with a head that’ll support 17 to 18 pounds. The thirty-nine dollar Vivitar tripods work well for low light point and shoot work but not for digiscoping.

Taking the Photo

All of the photography basics of lighting, composition and exposure apply. Digiscoping with a smart device or point and shoot camera is easier for the very simple reason that you are not replacing the camera’s lens with a spotting scope; therefore, all of the exposure options like aperture priority, program mode, auto exposure and auto focus still work. When using a DSLR camera, you are replacing its lens with a spotting scope so none of those same features work. When digiscoping with a DSLR,  you need to shoot your photos using manual exposure control,  and focusing is done by focusing the spotting scope or in some models the camera adapter.

Exposure control through a DSLR while digiscoping is limited for the following reason. When you remove a camera’s lens you lose the ability to adjust aperture, this is a setting that determines how much light is allowed through the lens. It also influences depth of field. So, when shooting through a spotting scope, in manual, you control exposure through a combination of ISO and shutter speed, and for any given subject and lighting condition there’s only one or two settings that will render a quality detailed image. ISO is a measure of light sensitivity and shutter speed determines the duration of the exposure. The higher the ISO the more light sensitive the image becomes. The faster or slower the shutter speed,  the lower or higher  the exposure time respectively.

Another anomaly when shooting through a spotting scope is greatly reduced light transmission, so you’ll need to use a higher ISO. Most DSLR’s have an Auto ISO feature but I prefer to set ISO manually in a range of no less than 200 but no higher than 1600. I use shutter speeds of no less than 1/60th of a second but no faster than 1/640th of a second depending on subject matter and lighting conditions.

If you’re using a DSLR to digiscope, consider developing a dope sheet (in photography parlance a “contact sheet”.) For example…

  1. Start at an ISO of 200 and 1/60th and step through shutter speed up to 1/640th. Examine each image to see how it changes through that sequence.
  2. Nest, move to the next higher ISO value, for example, 400 and setting your shutter speed to 1/60th and step through again. Once again examine the images.
  3. Continue all the way up to the highest ISO that you want to develop shutter speed dope for.
  4. You can continue this process as far as you wish, but I would avoid ISO settings greater than 1600 because they reduce image sharpness. Extremely high ISO values and fast shutter speeds degrade image quality.
  5. Lastly, remember that high magnification long range shots will be significantly lower in quality because of atmospheric effects like mirage. This is true whether you are shooting through a Bushnell spotting scope or a Leica.

Digiscoping, is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family so check it out, you’ll be glad you did.

Have a great weekend! Weather permitting get out and spend some quality time with your friends and family.

Winchester Adds Subsonic .22LR To Its M-22 Line

In 2016, Winchester Ammunition continues grows its rimfire product line with the development of a new M-22 Subsonic .22 LR round.

The M-22 is designed specifically to function in semi-automatic firearms, while remaining subsonic from both pistol and rifle length barrels. The new M-22 Subsonic features a 45-grain black-plated lead round nose bullet that has the equivalent energy of full velocity 36-grain rimfire products. In addition, the M-22 Subsonic utilizes non-corrosive priming and clean burning powder for reduced muzzle flash.

The M-22 Subsonic was also created with suppressed firearms in mind, but performs just as well in unsuppressed rifles and handguns. During Winchester testing, M-22 Subsonic rounds measured 129 dB from an unsuppressed rifle. That is significantly quieter than a full velocity .22 LR fired from a suppressed rifle, which typically measures around 138 db. With the addition of a suppressor, M-22 Subsonic achieves a remarkably quiet 116 db.

M-22 Subsonic will be available in 100-round plastic packs and 800-round bulk packs.

WITH MAGPUL AT SHOT SHOW 2016

There’s no grass growing under Magpul’s feet and consumers can expect a slew of new products from the company to start shipping in 2016. Before getting into to the traditional Magpul lines, I’d like to talk about their departure into the soft good space. Late in 2015, they introduced their water resistant Daka pouches in small, medium and large.

DSC_0179

In addition to the Daka product, Magpul also launched the Core line of gloves with six models: Flight Glove, Technical Gloves, Patrol Gloves, Breach, Breach FR and Patrol. Each is tuned for its own specific application but what I really liked is that all have three-finger touchscreen capability. Now for the real news…

The wall behind the Core gloves holds some insight into the upcoming Magpul line of apparel.  Shirts, T-shirts, pants, pouches all made with the durability that Magpul is famous for with some advanced materials at a great price point. Consumers can expect to see a rollout Q1 and Q2 of 2016. Not your typical tactical look but certainly attractive and high performance.

DSC_0180

Along the more traditional lines, Magpul will be introducing late in 2016. The Precision Rifle Stock (PRS) Gen 3. The new version will be lighter and sell for about 25% less than the original PRS. Even at the lower price, you are giving nothing up. The PRS Gen 3 features QD cups port and starboard for sling attachment, precision toolless length of pull and comb height adjustment as well as cant. The Gen 3 will also use Magpul’s latest material designs.

DSC_0184

Magpul is all in with the AK platform.  In 2015 they introduced the Zhukov and Zhukov S (Yugo)  right folding stocks along with the Zhukov hand guards with M-LOK slots. The company also introduced the PGM 30 AK / AKM Gen 3 which is the steel reinforced variant of the AK / AKM MOE version. You can read my review here

DSC_0176

Also new for 2016 is the UBR GEN2, an adjustable stock for the AR15/M4, designed to offer the same strength and stability as a fixed stock with a consistent and comfortable cheek weld in any position.

The UBR GEN2 features a fixed cheek piece to provide a consistent cheek weld in any of its 9 positions, and is compatible with Carbine as well as A5-length buffer systems. The UBR GEN2 is about five ounces without giving up durability. It’s also 25% lower in price, which is always good news.n The UBR Gen 2 comes standard with front and rear QD sling attachment points, two footman’s loops, the ergonomic MOE SL angled-toe rubber butt-pad, and customizable storage compartment.

WITH RADETEC SAFE SHOOTING RANGE AT SHOT SHOW 2016

Screenshot 2016-02-11 21.45.35

Who is Radetec?

Rade Tecnologías specializes in research and development of new technologies with a focus on their application to firearms. They develop electronic devices that enhance the security and control in the use of firearms. The company was founded in 2004 as the defense and security division of Grupo Empresarial Electromédico (GEE), an established business with more than 30 years experience managing and maintaining electronic equipment for hospitals. Radetec is headquartered in Madrid and Zaragoza,  Spain. The company has recently opened a branch in the U.S.

I was already familiar with Radetec products prior to my Shot Show visit with the company,  in particular their shot counter product and a very impressive application usable at the armory level to manage weapon maintenance. I developed a rapport, over the past three years, with Jose Cuesta, Radetec’s Head of R&D. I kid him about being Gallegos. – you need to be from Spain to understand that; however, he remains resolute in advancing the idea that they really are from Zaragosa, Spain.

DSC_0392

At this year’s SHOT Show, Jose took me through one of their new products marketed as Safe Shooting Range. The product goal is to provide military, LE and civilian training ranges with a reliable remotely operated weapon control system. The system consists of  the Lock Remote Control (LRC) Unit and the Lock Assembled Components (LAC). The LAC is a solenoid operated tamperproof  intervention system installed in the actual weapon. The LRC is an r.f. control unit used to send commands to the LAC at distances of up to 100 m. The range instructor can shut down one firearm or all. The range officer can also create threshold to manage muzzle elevation and muzzle direction. If a threshold is exceeded the weapon is disabled mitigating the risk of shooting across lanes or negligent muzzle management.

My opinion, at first glance, were I range officer at a police academy, police department, government agency training range or civilian training facility I would give RADETEC Safe Shooting Range a very serious look.

You can even disable firearms that grow legs! Check it out, it’s time well spent.

THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO WANTS TO REMOVE REFERENCE TO THE “FOUNDING FATHERS” IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT LANGUAGE …

TGIF, we’ve made it through another week and it’s time for our weekly shoo-the-shit. This is an event when you the reader can make any unsupported comment, insult anyone you wish, use profanity or change the subject altogether. So, here we go…

Apparently the City of San Diego , who by the way benefits enormously from a huge military presence, has published guidelines for all of its employees to follow under the title of “Visual and Correspondence Style Guidelines” placing demands on its employees to banish a number of words and phrases like “the common man,” “mankind,” “manmade,” “man up” and suggesting substituting “Founding Fathers” with “Founders.” It created so much turmoil that San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer reversed the City’s position. You can read the original story line here.

You have got to be shitting me! What the hell are these people thinking about. When an elected official undermines the very instrument they are sworn to uphold and protect, you set a new standard for hypocrisy. The Founding Fathers created a document that presented an amazingly clear vision and mapped the development of a nation that is the greatest democracy in the world and it just blows me away to see a growing batch of elected officials that can’t wait to trash it.

If this isn’t enough incentive for you all to get out and participate in the 2016 election cycle, I don’t know what is. Absolutely amazing!

Have a great weekend folks!  Try to spend some quality time with your buds or family but above all be safe.

With Juggernaut Tactical At Shot Show 2016

DSC_0523

M1A aficionados will remember California company Juggernaut Tactical and the  M14 Rogue Chassis for the M14 / M1A platform. Juggernaut was one of the first to introduce an advanced chassis for the M14,  designed around the bull-pup concept. Their approach opened up application opportunities for the M14 / M1A not previously possible; not the least of which was mounted or in vehicle use of the rifle. The  Rogue Chassis shorted the M14 by 11 inches but preserved barrel length, and more importantly distributed the weight back towards the shooter. If you’ve ever shot a suppressed M14 or M1A unsupported you know exactly what I mean.

For 2016 Juggernaut Tactical has introduce a complete rifle, the Rogue X-Rifle, with some very interesting features; they include a modified action by Bula Defence System, shorter 19 inch barrel, AR style safety selector and left side non-reciprocating charging handle.

The Rogue X-Rifle should be available Q2 of this year at an M.S.R.P. of $2,499

SIG SAUER MCX and MPX Air Rifles

DSC_0319

In an earlier post, I alluded to SIG Sauer’s vertical integration, and that extends to its air rifle products. The company manufactures replicas of their MCX and MPX rifles in .177 caliber air rifle variants. I can’t think of a nicer way to spend an afternoon with the family plinking in the back yard with these very nice air rifles. They’re all made by SIG to be accurate replicas of the real deal, with a few minor differences.
Features …
  • Vertical foregrip.
  • Flip-up, adjustable front and rear sights.
  • 30-round patented roto-belt magazine design.
  • Models are available with a red dot sights and magnified optics.
  • Muzzle velocity with a full CO2 charge is 700fps to 600fps.
  • Flip-up adjustable front and rear sights.
  • Integral Weaver/Picatinny rails and accessory rail included.
  • Tested and guaranteed to 15,000 shots.
  • $199 to $250 depending on the model you choose.

SIG also manufactures a number of pistols, like the P250 and P226, in .177 caliber along with a full array of backyard targets.

Looks Like Fun!

EOTech Vudu 1–6 x 24mm Rifle Scope

DSC_0460

EOTech is also jumping into the midrange magnified optics space. The company introduced the Vudu line of rifle scopes in three magnifications of 1 – 6 x 24mm, 2 – 10 x 44mm and 3.5 – 18 x 50mm and all models feature a first focal plane reticle. EOTech has done something that I thought was pretty whiz-bang for their reticle illumination. They use  push buttons along the circumference of the focus knob to control what is a very bright illuminated reticle. You won’t be loosing this reticle under bright light or highly reflective targets.  Tube diameter for the 1 – 6 and 2 – 10 is 30mm and 34mm for the 3.5 – 18.

I had the opportunity to check out the 1 – 6 x 24 and felt it offered exceptional clarity. The turrets provide excellent tactile with no slop, each click is distinct. There was an abundance of diopter adjustment so folks with less than optimal vision will appreciate that. The magnification power ring was snug but very smooth and EOTech incorporates a throw lever. The 1 – 6 Vudu also sports the EOTech target ring reticle.  It’s difficult to accurately asses if its 1x setting is a true 1x but I’d have to say it’s close enough for hand grenades and horseshoes. I think EOTech  will do very well with the Vudu line of rifle scopes but it is a crowded space and even with its rock-solid lifetime warranty Vudu is up against stiff competition.

SIG SAUER OSCAR3 IMAGE STABALIZED SPOTTING SCOPE

DSC_0329

SIG ARMS is not just another prestigious firearms manufacturer that’s vertically integrated, it’s also adding product lines at a blinding pace; this was clearly visible at this year’s Shot Show in Las Vegas.

Optics is one of those areas where SIG has added some very impressive magnified optics. I’m holding SIG’s OSCAR3 in 6-12 x 25 image stabilized mini-spotting scope.

The SIG SAUER OSCAR3™ mini spotting scope features electronic image stabilization technology and fits in the palm of your hand (read no tripod required). The proprietary SOS™ SIG Optic Stabilizer system is gyroscopically stabilized that cancels out the very disruptive image of artifacts shaking and vibrations that can blur an image, especially at higher spotting scope magnification levels. SIG utilizes Low Dispersion fully multicoated glass and a BAK4 prism, which delivers razor sharp images, exceptional color fidelity and outstanding low light performance. The body is constructed from a  lightweight glass fiber reinforced polymer body wrapped in a durometer synthetic rubber. So, it’s very grippe and feels great in the hand.

The OSCAR3 features a multi-position twist-up eyecup to customize eye relief setting and has independent power selector, focus and image stabilization controls. The OSCAR3 is covered by the SIG SAUER Electro-Optics Infinite Guarantee and SIG SAUER Electronic Component Limited 5-Year Warranty

DSC_0328

SIG’s OSCAR3 is available in two flavors 6 – 12 x 25mm and 10 – 20 x 30mm. The company also manufactures the OSCAR5 a much larger long range optic in 15 – 45 x 65mm.

    • M.S.R.P.  OSCAR3 6 – 12 x 25mm  $499.99
    • M.S.R.P.  OSCAR3 10 – 20 x 30mm  $599.99
    • M.S.R.P. OSCAR5 15 – 45 x 65mm $799.99

With Nemesis Arms At SHOT Show 2016

DSC_0376

I made a speed run to Nemesis Arms’ booth to quench a burning desire to check out the Vanquish Multi-Caliber Takedown. A very nice little package that’s available in almost any caliber that floats your boat. The minimalist design does away with any of the variances, in the critical tolerances, that compromise accuracy so the Vanquish rifle is a tack driver with exceptional mobility. Break it down and put it back together without loosing zero – not bad! Top it off with your preferred magnified optic and you’re good to go. M.S.R.P. $4500

WITH COOL FIRE AT SHOT SHOW 2016

DSC_0135

CoolFire is a revolutionary firearms training system that utilizes CO2 and an integrated laser to convert a standard pistol into an effective firearms training tool. The company sells a complete kit that includes a replacement barrel, laser insert and CO2 filling station. You supply the CO2. The system does not use a BB gun CO2 commercial cartridge; instead, you charge the system from a 20oz pony size bottle.

Firing the CoolFire Recoil Laser Trainer was surprisingly realistic. No blue guns here, the shooter trains with his or her own converted pistol, so he or she is gains experience their own sights, trigger pull, firearm weigh and magazine release.

CoolFire is presently selling reflective targets; however, additional targets are in the works. The shooter can also use the Recoil Laser Trainer with any of Laserlyte’s excellent trainer targets.

Kits are available for the 1911 w/bushing barrels, Glock 17, 19, 21, 22, 23 S&W M&P .40 and 9mm, Beretta 92 and 96.

M.S.R.P. is the same for all flavors at $399.99

WITH MAGNUM BOOTS AT SHOT SHOW 2016

DSC_0221

Magnum Boots is my favorite boot supplier for two reasons. First, the company’s boots are superbly comfortable. Second, they stock and sell wide sizes. Magnum Boots does not sell gimmicky footwear; they simply wear well, comfortable and durable as hell.

For 2016, the company is introducing two uniform boots the STRIKE FORCE and Magnum OPUS. Both should be available in September 2016.

The STRIKE FORCE is first to use Armourgel, a new energy absorbing material in footwear. The material has dynamic properties and stiffens on any impact to provide protection but flexes when protection is not required for safety and comfort. The Strike Force will also feature a Michelin rubber outsole inspired by the Michelin Power Rain tire and Michelin Pilot Alpin tire, so STRIKE FORCE should be incredibly stable on a variety of terrains.

The Magnum Opus is a trainer variant that is lightweight but should do really well for those high speed low drag kinetic operations. This boot has a Kurim protective upper which offers high abrasion resistance, while protecting the foot. The outsole is what you would expect from a high performance all terrain running shoe thus making the Opus ideal for running through mud, scaling walls, climbing ropes, or just pounding the pavement. This is the evolution of Magnum’s fit for purpose footwear. The Opus boot will be available in Coyote and OCP

WITH SUREFIRE AT SHOT SHOW 2016

Late in 2015, Surefire introduced two weapon mounted lights with some very impressive features, the X300V and X400V IRC. These lights are high performance tools with price tags not for the faint of heart.

In white-light mode this light delivers 350 lumens of visible light shaped by its TIR lens into a focused beam with significant reach and substantial peripheral illumination. Switching to IR mode is quick and simple, just push and twist the self-locking bezel selector In IR mode you get 120 mW of  IR illumination for applications involving NVDs; there is also an off setting on the bezel.
The civilian legal <0.7 mW infrared laser is ideal for use with night vision devices during stealth operations. The laser-sight is adjustable for windage and elevation using Nylok® screws that won’t back out from the effects of recoil and holds zero. An amber-colored LED laser-indicator lights up whenever the laser sight is on.

Activating the light is done using its ambidextrous paddle switch which allows the operator to select momentary and constant-on modes.

A separate mode selector on the rear of the X400’s laser module lets you select an array of modes which work in concert with the spectrum selected on the bezel selector. This mode selector offers the choice of: an off setting, laser only, light and laser (bezel selector must be in IR mode for full infrared capability), primary beam only, and a second off setting.
Fits: Handguns and long guns with a MIL-STD-1913 (“Picatinny”) rails. MR adapter mounts available for some handgun models without rails. M.S.R.P. $875

Late in 2015, Surefire introduced a new and improved version of their standard setting X300 weapon light designated as the X300V. This light features white-light and infrared output capability from an all-LED V-Series head. Switching between modes is easily done by pushing and twisting the knurled self-locking bezel selector.
In white-light mode, the X300V  generates a 350 lumen tightly focused beam. In infrared mode, the IR LED produces 120 milliwatts of IR output for use with NVDs. There is also an off setting on the bezel which disables the X300V for maximum light discipline. Activating the X300V is done via its ambidextrous toggle switch, constant-on mode is also supported. The X300V Weapon Light can be quickly attached to a handgun or a long gun using its Rail-Lock® system, which permits solid attachment to any Universal or MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rail. M.S.R.P. $429

Surefire’s latest addition is the Sidekick an Ultra Compact Variable Output LED personal light. This light is rechargeable via USB and designed to attach to keys. This polymer-bodied light features three levels of output. On high, light output is 300 lumens, medium delivers 60 lumens and low a very handy map reading 5 lumens. Runtimes range from 1.25 hours on high and 45 hours on low. Sidekick is a versatile great little light for the entire family. M.S.R.P. $79.99

WITH DEAD AIR ARMAMENT AT SHOT SHOW

DSC_0404

Had a great visit with the Dead Air Armament staff at Shot. A great bunch of guys with a very impressive product line; firing their Sandman suppressor at Media Day convinced me of that.  The company produces a very high quality multi-caliber suppressors. The center fire suppressor sells as the Sandman.  The Sandman comes in three different models: S, L and Ti with MSRP ranging between $849 for the direct thread  Ti model to $1,199 for the QD Sandman L. All of these suppressors are usable  on hosts chambered up to 300 WinMag.

DSC_0403

DSC_0400The Centerfire Pistol suppressor is also a multi-caliber suppressor that can be used with hosts chambered in .22LR, 300 BLK (Subsonic), .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 10mm and 9mm. The Ghost™ is full auto rated and can broken down to a short configuration. Applications that require a higher level of sound suppression can be easily accommodated by changing the Ghost back to its long. M.S.R.P $949

DSC_0401Dead Air also builds a thread on rimfire suppressor marketed as the MASK. The company uses a blend of titanium and 17-4 PH stainless steel construction for direct thread applications. This suppressor is end-user serviceable and suitable for use in .22LR .17 HMR and  5.7 x 28 hosts. M.S.R.P. $449

DSC_0404Dead Air also manufactures muzzle devices that include a flash suppressor, muzzle brake and their latest device the Pyro. The flash suppressor and muzzle brake serves as a suppressor mount in addition to its other duties.

The company’s Pyro is an interesting accessory mounting as a QD device to the Dead Air’s muzzle brake and flash suppressor. It appears that its principal function is to contain the side blast from a muzzle brake. However, its Star Wars appearance makes for a nice finishing touch for you AR build.

In closing, this Duluth, GA company makes one heck of an impressive suppressor. You’ll need to check that out for your self; however, I was thoroughly impressed with a Sandman suppressed AK47.

THE GREAT ORGANIC FOOD HOAX

Man we are really late getting out our weekly shoot the shit topic. Shot Show took the wind right out of our sails and we apologize for that. We’ve prioritized getting out Show posts but we’re finally getting a handle on it.

So here we go, this week’s shoot the shit topic is an honest discussion of organic food.

The overwhelming majority of our readers are individuals focused on mental and physical fitness; a very important component of that interest is nutrition. So, what constitutes good nutrition?

In order to satisfy nutritional requirements, individuals need to intake all of the vitamins, proteins, fats and carbohydrates necessary to support the gamut of bodily processes. This is particularly important when you have an active life style. The healthy human body, male or female, is capable of synthesizing most of the lipids and proteins that it needs; however, some nutrients must be ingested directly from a food source. This is particularly true of proteins, and anyone suggesting that you avoid meats doesn’t know what they’re talking about. What you don’t need is a Sirloin steak twice a day everyday of the week.  Vitamins too need to be ingested. The best way to do that is through direct intake from fruits, vegetables and leafy greens. You can supplement your vitamin requirements through orally administered supplements. But a good spinach salad will always taste better than a Centrum tablet and the salad also has a positive effect on your digestive system.

Over the last 10 years or so, we’ve been seeing increasing advertising and promotion to suggest that organically grown foods are much better for you. We take exception to that!

All life forms on this planet are defined at their lowest level by their molecular organization. Here’s what that means, a vitamin C molecule from an organically grown orange is no different than a vitamin C molecule synthesized in a laboratory or from a commercially grown orange. Were there  to be a difference, they would no longer be vitamin C, an organic chemistry fact. The manufactured vitamin C is extremely pure and other than the satisfaction derived from eating an orange, the vitamin C content is the same. The orange has other positive benefits that includes fructose, minerals and roughage all of which are also good for you. So, we like eating oranges for their nutritional value but just what the hell is an organic orange and why should you pay two to three times more?

One of the challenges to feeding an increasing global population comes from the need to increase farm output from a limited amount of farmable land. To achieve that goal, industry has developed broad spectrum insecticides, like melathion, and concentrated nitrogenous fertilizers. Botanists, have also worked to improve plant  varieties; engineering them to have shorter maturation cycles, greater fruit output, disease resilience, etc., etc. The “organically grown” concept does away with pesticides like melathion and substitutes concentrated chemical fertilizer with natural fertilizer like horse manure and vegetable based fertilizers. The end result is not a better nutritional product just less of it; hence the price differential. Melathion is an organophosphate (OP) insecticide that’s been in use for years. I’m not suggesting that you do this but you could drink a gallon of melathion and not die from it. Using animal based fertilizers gains you nothing; as they decompose they add nitrogen and  acidity to the soil which is the same as a commercial fertilizer. Commercial fertilizers have the added advantage that they are free from pathogens, like e.coli, which are transmitted via the oral fecal route. Using human feces as a fertilizer is a practice that continuous in some parts of the world but opens the door to horrendous problems and should be avoided. The most serious threat from concentrated fertilizers is not carcinogenicity it’s runoff leading to eutrophication of nearby lakes and streams.

We are huge fans of the food pyramid as the basis for excellent nutrition, supplemented by vitamins and other dietary supplements when the food source is not available or impractical.

When considering supplements, keep in mind that your healthy body will absorb all of the vitamins and minerals, fats and proteins that it needs. Any excess is excreted in urine or feces. There’s a great misconception that taking concentrated vitamins adds to wellness. If you start down this path, you’ll find that your urine will change color and feces will have a different aroma and consistency.

If you want to keep fit? Eat foods from the pyramid, make sure that you can see half of your plate, eat slowly and regularly and find an exercise that you can incorporate in your life style so that engaging in it becomes habitual. Thirty minutes every other day is better than nothing but nowhere near enough! Get out there and sweat!

BERETTA CONTINUES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE POWERED RAIL CONCEPT

DSC_0304

Developers at Beretta are moving forward with the powered rail concept bringing the company closer to the fully integrated weapon, an ambitious idea the DoD advanced several years ago. I had the opportunity to meet with a representative engineer from Beretta to get a granular overview of the system.

The powered rail concept calls for a set of accessories and a weapon rail system that distributes power to compatible accessories. The rail also provides a data buss for a video and data stream. The longer term objective is the integration of the weapon to the communications fabric. Rail accessories are powered from a common power source consisting of 6 lithium AA batteries housed in the buttstock.

With its acquisition of Steiner, Beretta is completely vertical and customers will see the development of the powered rail accelerated, along with accessories and technologies to integrate the weapon and operator with command and control, to a level previously unavailable. Beretta markets its powered rail technology as the ARX Intelligent Rail.

WITH SPYDERCO AT SHOT SHOW 2016

I had a great visit with our friends at Spyderco who were kind enough to take us through their interesting and very attractive new offerings for 2016. The Spyder produces exceptional folding and fixed blade knives; absolutely some of the best cutlery money can buy. The company also goes out of its way to support our military personnel and our veterans, and that commitment deserves our admiration along with our business.

DSC_0195

PROFICIENT™
Designed by Chris Claycomb of Bushcraft UK, the Proficient is a high-tech expression of a classic bushcraft knife design. Instead of traditional carbon steel and a Scandi grind, the Proficient features vanadium-rich CPM S90V stainless steel and a full-flat grind for superior cutting performance and edge retention. The scales of its full-tang handle are machined from solid carbon fiber and contoured to ensure comfortable prolonged use. The PROFICIENT comes complete with a premium leather sheath for comfortable belt carry.

DSC_0196

AQUA SALT™ BLACK BLADE
The Aqua Salt is a versatile, do-everything knife made even better with the benefit of an H-1 steel blade. Fans of this workhorse design were disappointed when it was discontinued. Based on popular demand, the Aqua Salt is back and better than ever with a non-reflective titanium carbon-nitride (TiCN) blade coating. Available with a Plain Edge or Spyder Edge, its hollow-ground blade provides excellent edge geometry for effective cutting and edge retention, while its injection-molded fiber glass reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle features Bi-Directional Texturing for a rock-solid grip and superior control, even with wet hands. A matching injection-molded polymer sheath features a multi-position G-Clip for fully configurable belt or waistband carry and grommeted construction so it can be easily lashed or flex-tied to personal equipment.

DSC_0187

ROADIE™ LIGHTWEIGHT
In early 2013, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced a plan to once again allow knives on airplanes. Although the plan was later withdrawn, Spyderco was ready for it with a unique new non-locking design called the Roadie. In essence a highly evolved penknife, the Roadie’s full-flat-ground sheepfoot-style blade features a “Double Dent™” for fingernail-free, easy two-handed opening. An improved notched-joint mechanism holds the blade open during use and is backed by a subtle index-finger choil to prevent accidental closure. Contoured fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) scales and strategically placed jimping (grooves) on the choil and spine provide comfortable ergonomics that enable this knife to perform well beyond its size. Sure to set a new standard in modern pocketknives, the Roadie is available in a variety of colors.

DSC_0188

MANTRA™
The Mantra is an impressive fusion of state-of-the-art materials, advanced design features, and classic Spyderco styling. Its high-performance CPM M4 tool steel blade is full-flat ground for superior edge geometry and includes both an index-finger flipper and a Trademark Round Hole to provide a full spectrum of one-hand opening options. It is paired with a handle comprised of two precision-machined solid titanium scales with a no-nonsense stonewashed finish. The reverse-side scale houses a stout Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism with a hardened stainless steel interface that also serves as an overtravel stop. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip allows discreet, ambidextrous, tip-up carry, while ensuring the Mantra is always poised for immediate use.

DSC_0191

PITS FOLDER™
The PITS (“Pie in the Sky”) Folder is an expression of British knifemaker Mike Read’s popular non-locking folder. Designed as a tough, hard-use folding knife that complies with strict British knife laws, it features a broad clip-point blade flat ground from N690Co steel. Its handle scales are precision machined from solid titanium, skeletonized to reduce weight, bead blasted to increase grip texture, and color anodized bright blue. The scales also feature integral split spring arms
that power the knife’s unique slip-joint mechanism. This mechanism, along with the blade’s prominent lower guard, help prevent accidental closure during use. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip provides left or right-side tip-up carry and, together with the blade’s Trademark Round Hole makes one-handed carry and operation of the PITS Folder completely ambidextrous.

DSC_0192

FIREFLY™
Custom knifemaker Peter Carey specializes in meticulously crafted knives made from premium, state-of-the-art materials. The Firefly captures the spirit of his custom craftsmanship in a truly unique production folder. Built on a framework of skeletonized full stainless steel liners, its precisely contoured handle features orange G-10 scales and handsome carbon fiber bolsters. The handle is home to a Walker Liner Lock mechanism that is paired with a saber-ground VG-10 blade with a highly functional drop-point profile. A two position clip offers right-side tip-up or tip-down carry for easy, immediate access.
