THE SHORTY FROM GEARCRAFT HOLSTERS FOR YOUR GLOCK 43 W/ STREAMLIGHT TLR-6

Two challenges faced by compact pistol owners is the selection of light/laser accessory followed by the inevitable holster selection. This is a fact of life across all platforms and quite often holster selection drives accessory selection, which from a functional perspective is precisely what NOT to do.

Glock 43 / TLR-6 owners rest easy – GEARCRAFT HOLSTERS out of Cumming GA has your back. We picked up one of their SHORTY OWB holsters to see how well they performed with the Glock 43 / TLR-6 arrangement. Comfort, draw, weapon retention and printing were all excellent and we give it our strong recommendation.

Crimson Trace Beginnings And Ongoing Support For Glock

Glock 17 with Crimson Trace red GLS-630

In the beginning, Crimson Trace began business by machining and installing a red laser sight—the GLS-630—into a Glock pistol. Customers had to send their pistol to Crimson Trace for the modifications and installation. The affixed laser sight protruded from the front of the trigger guard after the install process. Fast forward more than two decades, and with more than two million Crimson Trace customers served, it’s easy to see that today there’s a better way….

Two of Glock’s most recently released pistols—the Glock 42 and 43—can now be equipped with Crimson Trace’s award winning Laserguard® LG-443. This Laserguard is available with red or green lasers, and there are also Blade-Tech holster packages available that deliver a custom fit holster for firearms equipped with the Crimson Trace Laserguard. Visit www.crimsontrace.com for more details. MSRPs begin at $229. More Crimson Trace laser sights and Blade-Tech holster combo packages for numerous handguns are being released in the months ahead.

There are also Crimson Trace Lasergrips® that fit many Glock handguns models, including the Gen-4 full size models 17, 22, 31, 34, 35 and 37, plus the compact Gen-4 models 19, 23, 32, 26, 27 and 33. These Lasergrips feature rear activation and are designed as across-the-back installs.

Additional Crimson Trace Laserguard units, including model LG-452 with a green laser, will fit more than two dozen Glock pistols in the Gen-3 and Gen-4 groups. The popular LTG-736 Lightguard®, another Crimson Trace innovation, can be installed over the pistol’s trigger guard and co-installed with several other Crimson Trace products for a light and laser combination.

Of the nearly two dozen Crimson Trace laser sights and light products engineered specifically for Glock pistols, seven models are now offered with brilliant green lasers. Of course if the Glock handgun has a rail under the muzzle, shooters can also consider installing Crimson Trace’s popular and compact Rail Master®— or the bright light-and-laser duo Rail Master® Pro™. The lightweight and durable Rail Master Pros are available with red or green lasers and 100-Lumen LED white lights.

U.S. ARMY ENGINEERS SECURE PATENT FOR A LIMITED-RANGE PROJECTILE.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. — Three employees of the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, or ARDEC, were awarded with a U.S. patent for their proof of concept work on a limited range projectile.

Brian Kim, Mark Minisi, and Stephen McFarlane filed collectively for the patent on May 7, 2013 and were notified of its approval on Sept. 1, 2015.

The concept for the limited range projectile includes pyrotechnic and reactive material. The pyrotechnic material is ignited at projectile launch. The pyrotechnic material ignites the reactive material, and if the projectile reaches a maximum desired range prior to impact with a target, the ignited reactive material transforms the projectile into an aerodynamically unstable object.

The image above accompanies U.S. Patent 9,121,679 B1, “Limited Range Projectile,” awarded on Sept. 1, 2015. Brian Kim, Mark Minisi and Stephen McFarlane from Picatinny’s Small Caliber Munitions Team are the inventors.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems To Build Military Grade Barrels For S&W’s M&P Pistols

Way back in November of 2014 we published a quick blurb disclosing the upcoming joint venture between Smith & Wesson and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems to collectively present the U.S. Army with a modular polymer frame pistol for its MHS initiative now designated the XM17. That relationship has been consummated when S&W awarded General Dynamics OTS a multi-year contract to manufacture and supply hammer forged, military-grade gun barrels for Smith & Wesson’s M&P pistol. General Dynamics announced the award on 2 March 2016.

Smith & Wesson is offering its M&P pistol for the US Army’s XM17 modular handgun system (MHS) competition. The two companies announced their partnership in 2014 to pursue the army’s MHS solicitation, with the aim of replacing the current Beretta M9 with the Smith & Wesson M&P polymer pistol platform as the army’s standard sidearm.

James Debney, president and chief executive officer, Smith & Wesson, said:

‘A key initiative within our strategic plan has been the continual development of our flexible manufacturing model through added component outsourcing. That approach has served us well by providing a solid and highly adaptable manufacturing platform for growth.

‘Our contract with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems represents an enhancement of that initiative and demonstrates the evolution of our partnership. Together, we believe we are well positioned to compete for the army’s XM17 MHS program for which we recently submitted our proposal.’

What Happened To Glock’s TB Models?

It’s Friday and we’re headed into the weekend so it’s time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic.

So, folks what the heck happened to Glock’s TB models. This is a question that has perplexed us for almost a year. In fact, while at SHOT SHOW 2016, in Las Vegas, we tried to nail down the answer only to be told they were still available, which was clearly wrong. A very modest amount of research on Glock’s website reveals the conspicuous absence of the TB models.

One of the highly anticipated announcements coming out of SHOT SHOW 2015 was Glock’s release of 4 TB (threaded barrel models) the G17 TB, G19 TB, G21 SF TB and G23 TB. Glock included high bright front sight posts along with an Austrian made extended threaded barrel that added about 13.5 millimeters to the pistol’s overall length and threaded in 13.5×1 mm and 16x1mm. All of these pistols were being built of Glock’s Gen 3 platform even though the Gen4 was readily available. These pistols were available for right around $570 give or take $20.

The TB models started shipping Q1-Q2, 2015 and then POOF! You can find one or two, on some of the auction sights, but for all intents and purposes they’ve been discontinued. We’d like to get the straight skinny on its disappearance.

Demand for these pistols was certainly there. It’s quite true that  several companies offered their own extended threaded barrels and high sights, but those incremental upgrades add an additional $400 to your investment.

If you know the answer to our question, we’d like to hear from you. Theories are welcomed and will be discussed as theories. Someone in cyberspace has the real answer and we’d like to get it out to our readers.

Having said that, we hope you have a fun but safe weekend. Spend some quality time with your buds or family, it’s time well spent.

Have a great weekend!

5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery Messenger Bag

DSC_0693

Many of our readers spend a good amount of time traveling for their jobs and we all know what a hassle it is to lug around laptops, notebooks, phones, etc., but no matter where you look, no one seems to make a bag that competently provides ready access to all your electronic devices, travel documents and other resources you need. We’d like to tell you that there are much more functional solutions than a traditional and equally boring attaché case. We had an excellent opportunity to get a first hand look at the 5.11 Messenger Bag and loved it.

I’ll get the boring stuff out of the way first. Materials and build quality are excellent there is not a stich, buckle, webbing or drain grommet that is out of place; in fact, I couldn’t find a single Irish pendant anywhere on this bag. That could be an anomaly but it speaks volumes to 5.11 Tactical’s QA.

DSC_0696

Some of its many noteworthy features are: water resistant 1050D Nylon construction,  a large main compartment that will easily accept a 15” laptop (11” H x 17” L x 4” D), two water bottle pockets that work equally well for communications gear, internal capacity of 748 cubic inchs that is exceptionally well laid out, YKK® self-healing zippers throughout, Duraflex® hardware, Luggage handle attachment, padded shoulder strap with a stabilizing sling, external loop panels for flag/morale/name or unit patches and two external admin pockets for calculators, I.D. cards, travels documents or just about anything that you need quick access to.

DSC_0701

The internals left nothing to be desired. Opening the front flap reveals a number of pockets which I took the liberty to configure with a tactical handheld light, a folding knife, two ballpoint pens, and a tactical pen and Sharpie. Integrated into the front of the bag are two additional pockets with Velcro closures that sit directly behind the pen and flashlight compartments. Moving inward, I found no problem finding a generous space for three tablets, that I used in conjunction with Common Operational Picture software, smart phone and laptop with all of the associated chargers and power sources.

After all of that,  I still had two internal folder sized pockets for maps, documents, or what have you, and two zippered mesh pockets that you can use for things like mad money. 5.11 uses internal Velcro retaining straps to keep all of your equipment and compartments snug and secure.

DSC_0703

The 5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery Messenger Bag includes an external pocket specifically designed to accommodate a sidearm.

DSC_0711

Everything on this bag is ambidextrous and the weapon compartment is no exception. 5.11 included two Velcro fasteners on the inside of the pocket that allow the user to carry the bag with the pocket unzipped. Opening the compartment is then a simple matter of pulling on the pocket mouth or using your hand like a knife blade to break open the Velcro closer. Last night, I ran through a couple of what I call “assholes and elbows” drills to get a feel for how quickly I could gain access to the firearm. I’ll tell you right now, this is not a quick draw solution unless you wear the bag so its front side faces your body, but just the same, an external weapon compartment is very nice to have depending on where your travels take you. The pocket also features an internal loop panel to retain a pistol magazine pouch and holster.

In closing, I found the 5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery Messenger Bag to be eminently competent with superb quality. You can find these bags selling in the $90 to $80 price range and 5.11 Tactical lists the M.S.R.P. at $99.99 with a variety of color options. This bag does everything right so check it out.

TNVC NVG ADAPTER FOR THE GoPro CAMERA

The TNVC NVG Adapter for GoPro HERO cameras allows you to capture the highest quality night vision video from the operator’s perspective.

The TNVC NVG Adapter will attach any HERO model to a night vision goggle with a PVS-14 Eyepiece Assembly. The PVS-14 Eyepiece assembly is the most commonly-used eyepiece in professional night vision and thermal equipment; insuring maximum versatility. A translucent Wilcox Industries amber beam-splitter attaches to the rear of the goggle, bouncing the night vision image 90° into a perpendicular-mounted GoPro HERO camera. The camera mounts snugly against the goggle to minimize profile, via a clamp arm that attaches around the NVG Eyepiece Locking Ring. The user sees through the beam-splitter eyepiece normally while the first person POV is recording.  A note about attaching to a PVS-14 NVG: The NVG Adapter for GoPro HERO Cameras will only fit single battery PVS-14 models.  It will not fit dual battery models.

The Amber Beam-Splitter has a non-glare/reflective coating to insure no light flare in the video while also reducing the green glow signature on the operator’s face. However, the tradeoff is a slight reduction in light transmission. TNVC recommends setting the NVG’s gain to its highest and using an infrared illuminator in extreme low light environments.

M4 SAFETY SELECTOR MANIPULATION PRESENTED BY STEVE GILCREST OF SIG SAUER ACADEMY

Proper manipulation is essential to safe weapon handling. Regrettably it’s a skill that is often overlooked by both professional and recreational shooters. I’ve seen shooters dismount the weapon, turn it on its side, operate the safety selector with the support hand index finger and thumb and a number of other variations. This is a technique that needs to be practiced repeatedly with emphasis on operating the safety selector while moving.  Next to muzzle control proper safety manipulation is at the top of my proficiency list.

This is an excellent video but I can do without the music…

SIG SAUER recommends that you seek professional, formal, hands-on instruction before attempting any of these drills.

Steve has 20 years of combined law enforcement and military experience. His military experience consists of eight years of active duty service with the United States Army. His assignments included tours with the 82nd Airborne Division and the United Nations Command Security Battalion Joint Security Area South Korea. His military qualifications include Ranger, Jump Master, Air Assault, and both British and UAE Parachutist badges. Steve has held positions in both the patrol division and community police unit for a large municipal police agency. Additionally he was assigned to the department training unit as the range master specializing in firearms training, use of force, and officer survival training. He holds instructor level certifications in all firearms, Taser, and specialty munitions. He was an Assistant Team Leader with his agency’s SWAT Team. Steve is an active member of professional organizations such as the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA).  Additionally, he is a competitive shooter and member of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and the United States Practical Shooting Association. Steve has also appeared as an expert on the History channel’s popular series, Top Shot in the Season 2, Episode 2, “Shoot or be Shot”.

DIGISCOPING CONTINUED–EXPOSURE

WOW, we made it through another week and we are now ready to kickoff the weekend. It’s been a rough week with some pretty harsh weather: rain, high wind, tornado watches, etc. But, we’ve emerged victorious and we hope you’ve all done the same.

Each Friday we have a shoot-the-shit topic where we discuss everything and anything under the sun, be it gear related or not. As a reader you may, and we encourage you to, participate. That participation is completely unstructured and readers are free to make any unsupported comment, insult anyone you wish, use profanity or change the subject to something else.  This is your moment for mental hygiene, or as we call it, a cerebral laxative. Our approach eliminates the need for you to compensate a group of individuals who’s sole reason for studying the behavioral sciences, in the first place, was to understand themselves; as such, they are living proof that free market economies produce sufficient surpluses to absorb what is otherwise useless.

This Friday, we were going to shoot-the-shit about the GEICO Tarzan commercial. This is the one where Jane asks the monkey if it knows how to get to the waterfall. What’s timely and extraordinary about this commercial is its direct applicability to how Americans are seeing their government, be they Democrat or Republican. Fortunately, we were rescued by a couple of reader questions requesting examples of exposure related issues. So, rather than answering these questions directly we slid our way out of Tarzan to discuss exposure.

I have five pictures below that illustrate the issues you’ll encounter when digiscoping. The photos were taken through a 15x to 45x fixed eyepiece spotting scope with a 65mm objective. The camera is a Nikon DSLR attached to the spotting scope with a camera adapter and T2 nut for a Nikon F-Mount. Recall that in last week’s topic we said that to control exposure when digiscoping with a DSLR we use ASA(ISO) and shutter speed. Why? Because the spotting scope replaces the camera lens; as such there is no aperture adjustment. All of the picture metadata is shown alongside the photo.

Proper exposure is that combination of ASA (ISO) and shutter speed that delivers the most detailed image. By detail I mean color rendition and observable detail in both light and dark parts of the image.

If you look at the three power plant pictures, the image at the bottom is an example of overexposure. It was shot using an ISO of 200 and shutter speed of 1/200th of a second. The image is washed out with poor contrast and total loss of color. The next photo is shoot using an ISO of 200 and a shutter speed of 1/400th of a second. Note that contrast has improved, we see greater detail along the tree line and we begin to see beach details. In the next picture we use a faster shutter speed still at 1/1000th of a second. This photo is slightly underexposed  so it’s a little darker but retains most of the detail. Ergo, the proper exposure for this subject is somewhere between 1/1000th and 1/400th and in my camera that value is 1/500th of a second shutter speed with an ASA (ISO) of 200.

In the power plant set, the other thing that you’ll notice is the effect of haze on image clarity. The spotting scope does not discriminate, it magnifies everything including atmospheric artifacts. Therefore, subjects at great distances will be less sharp than subjects closer to the observation point. Mirage and haze will distort your image significantly.

The last two pictures compare the image of a subject taken at 15X and another at 45x. Your take away from this comparison is that the 15x image is much sharper and brighter with good balance and contrast. Why? True with all variable power spotting scopes, the higher the magnification the lower the light transmission. What differentiates a $3,200 spotting scope from a $400 unit is the quality of its glass and how well it transmits distortion-free light.

This should shed some light on the exposure issue.

The best way for you to approach digiscoping is discovery. Get out there with your friends or family and have a great time. It will be quality time I guarantee you. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

STREAMLIGHT INTRODUCES TLR-6 UNIVERSAL KIT

February 25, 2016–Streamlight® Inc., introduced a Universal Weapon Kit for its TLR-6® handgun light that includes a light/laser module and six interchangeable housings to fit a variety of sub-compact handguns. The housings are designed for use with more than 18 different models of Glock®, M&P Shield™, KAHR®, SIG SAUER® and Kimber® handguns.

The TLR-6, the first light with an integrated red aiming laser for sub-compact handguns, is designed to maximize visibility and targeting capability in a variety of home defense and tactical applications. Streamlight introduced the light — an industry first — in 2015 with a housing designed to fit the trigger guard of Glock® 42 and Glock® 43 handguns.

“We now have expanded the versatility of the TLR-6, with additional body housings that quickly and securely attach to the trigger guard of additional types of sub-compact handguns,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah.  “Now even more tactical and home defense users can attach this light/laser module to their sub-compact handgun of choice and benefit from its targeted bright light, as well as its powerful red aiming laser.”

Importantly, with the light and laser combination attached, users can more readily identify a potential threat before taking any action.

The TLR-6 uses the latest in C4® LED technology to deliver 100 lumens, 2,000 candela and a beam distance of 89 meters.  Its parabolic reflector produces a balance of beam and peripheral illumination. The light features three lighting modes:  LED Only, LED/Laser, and Laser Only, with operating run times of one hour for the LED Only or LED/Laser modes, and 11 hours for the Laser Only mode.  All modes automatically shut off after ten minutes to conserve batteries. The light also uses an integrated 640-660 nm red laser which has an operating temperature range of -20°F to +120°F, permitting usage under a wide variety of weather conditions.

The TLR-6 is powered by two 3 Volt CR-1/3N lithium coin batteries.  It features an integrated battery door that permits batteries to be replaced while the light remains mounted on the gun, and eliminates the need to re-sight the laser after a battery change.

The light is manufactured from durable, impact-resistant engineered polymer.  Depending on the model, it ranges in length from 2.30 to 2.97 inches, and in weight from 1.12 to 1.27 ounces.  It is IPX4 rated for water-resistant operation, and also is impact-resistant tested to one meter.

The TLR-6 Universal Kit is available at an MSRP of $210.00.  It includes one LED/laser module and six interchangeable body housings designed to fit the M&P Shield™ 40 and the M&P Shield™ 9; the Glock® 42 and the  Glock® 43; the Glock® 26, the Glock® 27 and the Glock® 33; the Kimber® MICRO; the SIG SAUER® P238® and the SIG SAUER® P938®; and the KAHR® ARMS MODELS CT9, CW9, CM9, CT40, CW40, CM40, TP9, P9, PM9, TP40, P40, and PM40.

Individual TLR-6 models also are available at an MSRP of $175.00 each.

The TLR-6 comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

STANDARD MANUFACTURING DP-12 DOUBLE BARREL PUMP SHOTGUN

DSC_0193

Before sitting down to share my thoughts on Standard Manufacturing’s DP-12 double barreled shotgun, I wanted to let the concept and what I experienced at SHOT seep in a little, but after much thought I have to say that as well designed and manufactures as the DP-12 is, I’m compelled to describe the concept as a solution waiting on a problem!

The DP-12 finds itself competing with KelTec’s KSG which is shorter in overall length at just over 26 inches, has a dual magazine tube with  a capacity of 6+6+1, a full length rail, bullpup design but lists at an M.S.R.P. of $990. So, the DP-12’s only real advantage over the KSG is in the follow up shot. The DP-12 chambers a shell in both barrels with each pump and is fired by two presses of the trigger. Furthermore, until both barrels are fired the operator is prevented from pumping or cycling the action so if you’re not used to the double trigger pull you may find yourself trying to pump the shotgun after the first shot with no success The basic DP-12 configuration sells for $1395 with other models selling upwards of $1,700.

Standard Manufacturing is positioning the DP-12 in the very competitive, but very lucrative tactical space, but there it finds very stiff competition from Remington and Mossberg; for example, the Remington Model 870 Express7-round tactical shotgun which sell for about $400 in its synthetic stock configuration.

Lastly, I don’t know of very many experienced shooters that would pass on an $1,800 Benelli M4 for a decked out $1700 DP-12.

The DP-12 is an excellent gun, don’t get me wrong on that point, but its philosophy of use is of questionable value based on my needs and my experience. If you like the uncommon, you will definitely have some fun with the DP-12; it has all of the features of an excellent gun with excellent ergonomics.

On the safety side of things, be sure that you follow the operators instructions for clearing the weapon. Remember that you have a second chamber to be cognizant of.

DRONE MAGAZINE

20160220_130016-1

Drone is a new rag printed in the U.K where UAVs are out of the closet in a very big way. Our interest in drones is that they are part of the ISR fabric with a rapidly increasing commercial application. Be it hobby, delivery, security, surveying or aerial photography the UAV is steadily revealing its value.

In the UK, DRONES have become serious business and December 2015, saw the initial launch of the UK Drone Exhibition at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, UK.

Drone enthusiast have come together in clubs to hold drone races and a number of other organized activities. Schools have also popped up that allow students to receive commercial UAV pilot training. Once certified, the student is able to operate UAVs (fixed or rotor) for commercial applications like in-town deliveries. With respect to hobby and / or commercial use of Drones, the EU is further along than in the United States.

20160220_132106It’s no longer the Wild Wild West out there; China, Japan, USA and EU have all announced and implement regulations to control the use of drones. In the United States for example, UAVs meeting specific size and weight guidelines must be registered with the FAA and registration numbers must appear on the drone body. Japan, is using drone deployable nets to capture UAVs operating in restricted airspace.

DIGISCOPING WITH YOUR SPOTTING SCOPE

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Outdoors enthusiasts are prolific users of magnified optics. Everything from monoculars to large spotting scopes are on their list of must have kit. If you are a tactical rifle or long range precision shooter using a spotting scope is not an option. But, how about combining your smart device or digital camera with your spotting scope to document interesting land formations, wildlife or a competition. Enter the topic of digiscoping. All shoot-the-shit rules apply.

Digiscoping, is the hobby of using an optic in front of your tablet, phone or digital camera to extend their focal length. There are numerous approaches ranging from complete farce to Cadillac solutions that don’t make sense unless you are picture taking for National Geographic or The Smithsonian. So, our focus today is how the average man gets into digiscoping and achieve excellent results within a reasonable budget.

What you need to digiscope…

  1. digital camera or smart device
  2. digiscoping camera adapter
  3. spotting scope
  4. tripod

Digital Camera or Smart Device – In 2016, chances are you already have one or both of these so you won’t need to go out and buy something else. However, what you plan on using for taking photos along with your selection of a spotting scope will drive what type of digiscoping adapter you’ll need. In the digital camera world there are basically two broad categories, the point and shoot and the digital single lens reflex (DSLR). Point and shoot cameras have fixed lenses while the Digital SLR has interchangeable lenses and sights through the lens for greater flexibility. Point and shoot cameras will normally top out at around $400. DSLR cameras can run up to $5000 for just the body, for professional grade equipment. The smart device takes two forms the phone with built in camera or the physically larger tablet with a camera. Image size for smart devices generally top out at 8 mega pixels, although 12 mega pixel versions are entering the market. One last piece of information before leaving the camera. Pixel count does not translate to resolution, it pertains to size. A 24 mega pixel camera produces a larger RAW image. Resolution is a function of the glass you’re shooting through.

Spotting Scope – here you have a very wide range of choices, but not all are created equal and I’ll say it right now that you don’t need a Leica or Swarovski to achieve excellent results. Without getting into the straight or angled eyepiece discussion, there are two types of spotting scopes those with removable or interchangeable eyepieces and those with variable power fixed eyepieces. If digiscoping is your principal reason for buying a spotting scope, your best option is to take the removable or interchangeable eyepiece route. You’ll pay a higher price, but you’ll end up with a system that performs very well for you. I’ll give you the why a bit later. If you elect to go with the fixed eyepiece spotting scope it will probably be variable power, for example 20x – 60x, and you’ll want to confirm with the retailer if the manufacturer has a camera mounting adapter for the specific model you’re considering.

Earlier, I said that the spotting scope / camera combination drives your choice of  camera mounting options. Here’s how it all works.

  • The universal approach to attaching a smart device to a spotting scope is to use a device that clamps around the eyepiece; then using vertical and horizontal alignment screws, the operator positions the camera lens at the center of the spotting scope eyepiece.

  • If you’re using a spotting scope with a removable eyepiece, you’ll need to purchase the camera adapter from the scope manufacturer. In addition, you’ll need a T-nut, which is camera mount specific, for example Nikon or Cannon. The T-nut attaches to the spotting scope camera adapter allowing the operator to mount the camera body directly to the spotting scope. This method of camera attachment provides the best results and virtually all professional level work is done using this arrangement. It delivers the crisp sharp focus needed for exceptional quality. It’s also the more expensive approach.

  • If your using a spotting scope with a fixed eyepiece, you’ll need a camera adapter that threads to the spotting scope body over its eyepiece and open on both sides so the operator can adjust magnification levels with a variable power eyepiece. Although this system produces excellent images, sharpness does suffer a bit because the camera is interacting with more levels of glass.

Tripod – last but not least is the tripod and tripod head. This is the weak link and the brutal truth is that if you don’t have a rock solid support, the spotting scope / camera system will vibrate in wind, or from operator use, resulting in poor image quality. Irrespective of equipment used, vibrations at magnification levels of 15x to 60x will destroy image quality so for that reason I recommend using, at least, a Manfrotto tripod with a head that’ll support 17 to 18 pounds. The thirty-nine dollar Vivitar tripods work well for low light point and shoot work but not for digiscoping.

Taking the Photo

All of the photography basics of lighting, composition and exposure apply. Digiscoping with a smart device or point and shoot camera is easier for the very simple reason that you are not replacing the camera’s lens with a spotting scope; therefore, all of the exposure options like aperture priority, program mode, auto exposure and auto focus still work. When using a DSLR camera, you are replacing its lens with a spotting scope so none of those same features work. When digiscoping with a DSLR,  you need to shoot your photos using manual exposure control,  and focusing is done by focusing the spotting scope or in some models the camera adapter.

Exposure control through a DSLR while digiscoping is limited for the following reason. When you remove a camera’s lens you lose the ability to adjust aperture, this is a setting that determines how much light is allowed through the lens. It also influences depth of field. So, when shooting through a spotting scope, in manual, you control exposure through a combination of ISO and shutter speed, and for any given subject and lighting condition there’s only one or two settings that will render a quality detailed image. ISO is a measure of light sensitivity and shutter speed determines the duration of the exposure. The higher the ISO the more light sensitive the image becomes. The faster or slower the shutter speed,  the lower or higher  the exposure time respectively.

Another anomaly when shooting through a spotting scope is greatly reduced light transmission, so you’ll need to use a higher ISO. Most DSLR’s have an Auto ISO feature but I prefer to set ISO manually in a range of no less than 200 but no higher than 1600. I use shutter speeds of no less than 1/60th of a second but no faster than 1/640th of a second depending on subject matter and lighting conditions.

If you’re using a DSLR to digiscope, consider developing a dope sheet (in photography parlance a “contact sheet”.) For example…

  1. Start at an ISO of 200 and 1/60th and step through shutter speed up to 1/640th. Examine each image to see how it changes through that sequence.
  2. Nest, move to the next higher ISO value, for example, 400 and setting your shutter speed to 1/60th and step through again. Once again examine the images.
  3. Continue all the way up to the highest ISO that you want to develop shutter speed dope for.
  4. You can continue this process as far as you wish, but I would avoid ISO settings greater than 1600 because they reduce image sharpness. Extremely high ISO values and fast shutter speeds degrade image quality.
  5. Lastly, remember that high magnification long range shots will be significantly lower in quality because of atmospheric effects like mirage. This is true whether you are shooting through a Bushnell spotting scope or a Leica.

Digiscoping, is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family so check it out, you’ll be glad you did.

Have a great weekend! Weather permitting get out and spend some quality time with your friends and family.
