DO YOU KNOW WHO’S MAKING SUPPRESSORS IN 2016 ?

20160403_115200

It may interest you to know that the suppressor sector is booming, and we can all thank the pioneering work from companies like SWR, GEMTECH and Advanced Armament, all of whom personify the spirit of small business entrepreneurship. The good news for consumers is that the vibrant competition in today’s market is leading to improved technologies and lower prices. Yeah, there’s a lot of fluff out there but there’s also some exceptional  technology with correspondingly impressive performance. One example of that is Georgia based Dead Air Armament. Keeping up with what’s new is a full time job so I have to complement the folks at Small Arms Review for the work they’ve put into SAR VOL 20, No 3  which is not a comprehensive but focused treatise of  ATF definitions, NFA regs, suppressor technology and suppressor history. SAR // Vol 20 No3 is on the racks now and available for purchase. If you are just getting started or have an interest in sound suppressors you’ll want to pick up a copy, it’s well worth the $6.95 price tag.

HECKLER & KOCH WINS COMPACT SEMI-AUTOMATIC SNIPER SYSTEM.

635951232310119226-ARM-sniper-rifle.JPG

Last Friday, 1 April 2016, the Army announced its decision to award Heckler & Koch a contract to develop a compact semi-automatic sniper system. The decision would replace the current sniper platform M110 SASS, made by Knight’s Armament of Vero Beach Florida.

The Army has been shopping for a shorter, lighter, more ergonomic and more reliable system as stated in the Program Executives Soldier’s Portfolio.

We’ve read the FedBizOpps.gov notice which disclosed that H&K will produce a maximum of 3,643 rifles over 24 months, as well as spare parts and depot support, at a max contract value of $44.5 million. There’s a minimum purchase of 30 rifles for quality assurance testing.

The announcement did not mention a specific H&K COTS model but we won’t exclude that possibility and there’s no information given to concretely support an H&K (new) development effort. Maybe its an April Fool’s joke on Knight’s Armament.

I’ve shot the M110 SASS on numerous occasion and have never had a problem holding at least 1 MOA, nor have I experienced a catastrophic stoppage of any type. It seems to me that if the Army is looking for a lighter and shorter sniper system to replace the M110, something like the Knight’s Armament Compact SASS with a collapsible stock, 16 inch barrel, lighter and shorter overall length,  would be the logical and less costly approach.

None of the interested parties had comments at this time, so we’ll keep an eye out for additional details as they become available.

Our congratulations to Heckler & Koch on their contract award.

KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND KNIVES AND FORKS

Readers we’ve made it through another week and look forward to some great weather and a well earned, fun, weekend. In last week’s shoot-the-shit topic we introduced you to the formalities of  a dinner table. Well, we had great feedback from our readers some on which cannot be shared as their language suggested certain contortions of the human anatomy. However, you are all very classy folks and there is no better way to flush out a neer-do-well and social fraud than through casual observation at the dinner table. To help you be all that you can be, we want to expose you to some of the finer points of dining. Remember that by practicing you’ll develop that all important muscle memory.

To that end, we shot a short (fun) video that details some of the finer points of using a knife and fork. Right off the bat, never push food on to your utensil with any part of your body. Two, when cutting meats never use an icepick grip on your fork and never bring the cut meat to your mouth with your left hand. Always rest the knife on the edge of your plate and use your right had to raise the fork to your mouth.

Remember we always love hearing from you and that all shoot-the-shit rules apply. Have a great weekend; enjoy your friends and families but above all be safe.

Social Responsibility Network’s GunTV to air across the USA on April 1, 2016

Hockessin, Del. (March 31, 2016) – Social Responsibility Network LLC and GTV Live Shopping LLC, are launching GunTV, a television shopping network for firearms and related consumer goods, on April 1, 2016. The network will air across the country on a variety of cable networks and television stations. The new GunTV website, www.guntv.tv, will be launched simultaneously.

“We are very excited to bring our new concept of shopping for firearms and accessories to live television. Our unique platform allows industry manufacturers to showcase products through our talented and experienced on-air hosts. Viewers will receive in-depth, entertaining product demonstrations, and see the products in action, an important component of the purchasing decision.” said Valerie Castle, Managing Partner of GunTV.

GunTV will initially air 7-days a week from 1AM to 7AM EST and plans to scale the network to a 24/7 broadcast schedule. Leading manufacturers will be featured with product demonstrations punctuated with three minutes of firearms safety public service announcements every hour. The network will also provide a superior level of service through highly trained and knowledgeable customer experience representatives recruited from the veteran and former law enforcement community who will assist GunTV customers with making purchases over the phone and online.

“We understand that the more informed we are as consumers, the better purchasing decisions we make. At GunTV, safety is our number one priority.  GunTV offers education, information and safety regarding firearms, and we follow all local State and Federal Regulations. GunTV does not ship firearms directly to consumers. All firearm orders are fulfilled by a Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer, and all firearm purchases through GunTV are subject to background checks.” said Ms. Castle.

GunTV’s hosts, culled from the shooting sports and former law enforcement and military communities, are entertaining and experienced with all types of firearms.

  • Carly Twissleman, an actress and professional rodeo competitor, comes from a firearms enthusiast ranching family.
  • Eric Anderson, former USMC field artillery platoon Sergeant, NRA certified firearms instructor, hunter safety instructor in the state of Florida, CMSA men’s level 6 cowboy mounted shooter board member and Top Shot Season 2 contender, also trains individuals in extreme horsemanship, marksmanship and firearms safety.
  • Denny Chapman, former law enforcement officer, is a professional cowboy mounted shooting competitor and NRA firearms instructor with his own line of signature products for the sport of mounted shooting and equestrian enthusiasts.
  • Amy Robbins, TV producer and host, model, certified NRA firearms instructor and all-American Texan, brings her passion for her family, faith, fashion and firearms to GunTV.
  • Anette Wachter, aka 30CalGal, is a member of the US Long Range Rifle Team and the 2015 World Palma Team, professional precision rifle and 3 gun competitor and a writer and blogger with her own line of gun jewelry.
  • Bree Warner, a veteran actress and auxiliary police officer with a large metropolitan police department, is also the founder of TactigalNYC gun blog, founded to empower women.
  • KC Kahne has been an avid shooter since his boyhood and with his certification as an NRA firearms instructor, KC has sought out and trained with some of the most respected and elite trainers in the firearms world.
  • Rydell Danzi, a military veteran with a passion for helping vets and non-vets, has directed and performed in films and is an avid outdoorsman.
  • Billy Birdzell, an officer in the USMC and a founding member of the Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) served two tours in Iraq before coming home to earn an MBA and join the NRA Office of Advancement, while still finding time to enjoy the great outdoors and become a competitive shooter.

GunTV is proud to offer its viewers an exciting mix of unique content, a wide range of firearms and related products and services, educational information, resources and entertainment, all delivered on television and streaming on the Internet 24 hours per day, 7 days per week at www.guntv.tv. GunTV will use multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, our hosts’ Twitter and email newsletters to keep customers engaged, and offer advertisers greater reach and messaging frequency.

GEAR REVIEW: STREAMLIGHT 800 LUMEN TLR-1 HL IN DARK EARTH

DSC_0739

We had the opportunity to review Streamlight’s latest addition to their TLR line. I’m consistently amazed by how much value this Pennsylvania company engineers into its tactical product line. Here’s a light that packs a whopping 800 lumens, preserves the original form factor of the TLR-1 so you don’t need to replace your $190 light bearing holster, is IPX7 compliant and will run for 1.7 hours continuously on 2 CR123A batteries. If you want a weapon mounted tactical light on steroids that’s an amazing value as well, read my review…

STREAMLIGHT DEBUTS 18650 LITHIUM ION BATTERY AND CHARGER

EAGLEVILLE, PA, March 23, 2016–Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting, introduced the Streamlight® 18650 Lithium Ion Battery and Charger, designed to energize the growing line of Streamlight products that accept 18650 rechargeable batteries. The new, dual power input charging system permits charging through either AC/DC or USB power sources.

The two-bay cradle can charge either one Streamlight 18650 Li-Ion battery or two batteries simultaneously, charging a single battery in as little as 3.5 hours. The charger is equipped with dual power input ports, accepting either 5V Micro-USB or traditional AC or DC power sources. This gives users a variety of charging options, such as a personal computer, portable USB charger, or 12V DC automotive power, when a wall outlet is not available.

“We introduced the Streamlight-branded 18650 Charger and Battery to give users an alternate power source for charging our newer flashlight models, such as the ProTac HL® 4 and the ProTac HL® USB, that accept 18650 rechargeable or standard lithium batteries,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “These products continue to grow in popularity because their rechargeable batteries make them extremely economical to operate. Now, users can conveniently recharge these batteries when they don’t have ready access to conventional power sources.”

Streamlight’s new rechargeable 18650 batteries offer 3.7V, 2600mAh and are rechargeable up to 500 times.  The charger unit has an impact-resistant engineered polymer housing.  Its Micro-USB input has a custom locking feature that charges from Streamlight AC/USB adapters or most other USB sources.

The new Li-Ion Charger and Battery is available in a kit that includes two Streamlight 18650 batteries and either a 120V AC cord with an MSRP of $70.00, or a custom micro-USB cord, with an MSRP of $60.00.  The charger, available in black, also can be purchased separately, with an MSRP of $25.00.  Individual 18650 batteries are available at an MSRP of $20.00 each.  Each product comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The UZI PRO SB features a side-folding Stabilizing Brace, produced for IWI US by SB Tactical LLC, designers and manufacturers of the original SB15 and SB47 Pistol Stabilizing Braces. Originally designed as a means for persons with limited mobility to operate and fire the AR-15 pistol, the custom adaptation of the Stabilizing Brace to the UZI PRO SB takes the application of large frame pistol control and stabilization to a new level. With the IWI brace’s unique sidefolding feature, the UZI PRO SB can be fired with or without the brace extended depending on the shooters need. With the brace in the folded position, storage space required in your safe or range bag is minimized.
In all other respects, the UZI PRO UPP9SB is identical to the UPP9S, a modernized Micro UZI semi-auto pistol based on the world famous UZI sub-machinegun, variations of which have sold in excess of 2,000,000 units worldwide. The new blow-back operated 9mm UZI PRO incorporates advanced polymers in the lower section of the receiver resulting in lighter weight and relocation of the magazine release to a more practical and traditional pistol based location.

Unlike earlier UZI models, the charging handle has been moved from the top of the pistol to the left side of the receiver. This allows the addition of a full length Picatinny rail to the top of the pistol, permitting the use of any optical device that utilizes a Picatinny rail clamp mount. An additional Picatinny rail is incorporated in the polymer lower that allows the use of lights and/or lasers to be mounted directly under the barrel.

Extremely reliable and accurate, the UZI PRO pistol incorporates three safety mechanisms:

  • Manual thumb safety
  • Grip safety that must be fully depressed before cocking or firing
  • Firing pin block

Each UZI PRO pistol is supplied with two magazines, one 20 round and one 25 round in states where these magazine capacities are permitted. A 32 round magazine is also available where permitted. Fully adjustable front and rear sights are standard.

Tracking Point Announces 5.56 Semi-Automatic Night Eagle – Day/Night Predator Eradication System

TP

TrackingPoint announced today the first Precision-Guided Firearm designed specifically for predator control.  The NightEagleTM semi-automatic 5.56 NATO includes TrackingPoint’s recently introduced Night Vision Kit (NVK).  The NVK alone retails for $2495.  Offered at the exclusive price of $7995 for the first 100 purchases (MSRP normally $10,490), NightEagleTM incorporates the same RapidLokTM  technology found in TrackingPoint’s military Precision-Guided Firearms. “NightEagleTM is purpose-built for predator eradication.  Predators will be eliminated with absolute precision 24/7/365,” said John McHale TrackingPoint’s CEO. “NightEagleTM is also well suited for homestead defense, herd management, and dynamic hunting.”

Key Features and Capabilities

  • Eliminates targets out to 400 yards
  • Tracks targets moving up to 10MPH
  • Night vision capabilities (with IR illuminator attachment)
  • Image Stabilization enables off-hand on-the-move stalking
  • Records voice and video of all engagements
  • RapidLokTM Target Acquisition and Control System with computerized guided trigger
  • Can be financed for up to 48 months (payments as low as  $182/month)

Night Vision
NightEagleTM incorporates an infrared sensitive CMOS sensor that detects light not visible to the human eye.  Depending on the strength of the IR illuminator, targets can be engaged and tracked out to 300 yards at night.  As a shooter pulls the trigger the target is automatically acquired and tracked. When trigger pull completes, the target is instantly eliminated.  Total Time-To-Kill (TTK) is approximately 2.5 seconds. RapidLokTM Fire Control is image stabilized enabling off-hand shots and shots on the run.
Shared Dominance
NightEagleTM records voice and video.  As the shooter engages a target he can voice annotate the recorded video in real-time, creating a rich media experience of his engagement to be shared with friends and family.
Zero-Signature Lethality
When deployed with
ShotGlassTM the shooter is completely unexposed.  In effect the shooter becomes the predator with skills well beyond the skills of the prey. Wearing the digital glasses the shooter can see exactly what NightEagleTM is seeing without exposing their body or head.  The scope view is projected into the shooters ShotGlassTM so shooters can acquire predators with virtually no exposure making the shooter undetectable by the predator.  Shooters can engage from virtually any hidden position – over berms, over walls, and around corners with extremely high eradication rates.
Pricing and Exclusive Offers
The NightEagleTM 5.56 retails for $10,490 but the first 100 purchases will be sold at the exclusive offer price of $7,995.

ROAD MAP TO FORMAL TABLE SETTINGS

Set of Place Setting Formal Dinner

It’s Saturday and we missed our Friday target date for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Explaining why we missed the Friday deadline would require me to relive the day and I beg to be spared. So, here we are a day late.

If you are new to the Blog, each Friday we come up with a topic that may or may not depart from the site’s central theme. As a reader, you can make any unsupported comment, insult anyone one you wish, use profanity or change the subject altogether; you will not be censored nor will you be billed for the mental douche the opportunity provides. This is our promise to you!

It’s been brought to our attention, that some of you may not be at the top of your game when it comes to formal dinning experience. We’ve seen accusations of both accidental and intentional expulsion of intestinal putrefaction, excessive belching, improper use of flatware, etc., etc. We also recognize that most of you have not had the opportunity to attend a military academy and be pronounced gentleman by  act of Congress. Have no fear, we are here to help!

When confronted with a formal event, don’t just sit there looking at the other guests sitting at your table as they may be equally uninformed. The photograph above provides an intuitive description of each item’s function. But, how do you use all this crap? Always start from the outside in!

Other rules you should follow…

  1. Chances are that you’ll be sitting close to someone else. Please keep your elbows down, especially when cutting meats. Your carbine training has prepared you for this so tuck those chicken wings in!
  2. In most formal settings, you’ll be provided with mineral water; drinking it will eventually result in a need to burp. When said need arises, looking like you know everything, bring your napkin up to your mouth and quietly relieve yourself. This is perfectly acceptable.
  3. Expulsion of intestinal putrefaction, of any sort and irrespective of sound pressure level,  is completely unacceptable.
  4. In addition to the items shown in the training aid above, you will generally be provided with a small shallow bowl containing water and a lemon wedge. This is intended for cleaning your hands after eating, typically, finger foods. Please do not drink this water! The proper method is to dip the tip of your thumb and index finger and rubbing them lightly. Under no circumstances should you wash your hands with the contents of your finger bowl.
  5. In the event that someone says something worthy of laughter, don’t just start rolling around in your chair. Tilt your head down with eyes looking up, then look at the people next to you while laughing in to your fist or your napkin.
  6. We neglected to discuss the all telling soup spoon. The proper soup spoon is round and not oval; however, occasionally you may encounter an oval-shaped soup spoon. One of the quickest ways of identifying a charlatan and pretender is by observing how they use the soup spoon. The soup spoon is brought to the lips and the soup is sipped from the spoon. If you see someone sticking the spoon in their mouth they  immediately reveal themselves as inconsequential. Oval spoons require that you place your lips along the long edge. Never insert the narrow edge of an oval spoon in your mouth.

Observing these very simple rules will result in a favorable impression, leading to further invitations.

Have a great weekend everyone! Be safe, enjoy some quality time with your friends and family. In closing I would like to say that 2016 is a crucial year for our country, so stay engaged and participate. I shit you not!

You Can See The Russian Influence In This Video

A Syrian military drone records a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) sending hundreds of deadly warheads on to a rebel position in Latakia. The impacts blanket an area hundreds of meters across.

The Russian approach to warfare has characteristically been shaped around large numbers; therefore, most of their weapon systems dispense with the finer points like high precision in favor of large numbers. The MLRS (multiple launch rocket system ) in this video is an extension of the older cold war Katyusha rockets – dispense with elaborate guidance systems and other electronics and make up for it with sheer numbers. You may agree with or disagree with the approach but they seem to think its effective.

DARPA’S IMPROV PROGRAM

imageThe Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Improv program is soliciting innovative research proposals for prototype products and systems that have the potential to threaten current military operations, equipment, or personnel and are assembled primarily from commercially available technology.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Improv program is soliciting innovative research proposals for prototype products and systems that have the potential to threaten current military operations, equipment, or personnel and are assembled primarily from commercially available technology.
The program definition of “commercially available technology” is largely unrestricted and ranges from generic and widely available technology such as cell phones, to highly specialized, domain-specific technology such as construction, salvage, or surveying equipment.
The technology scope of Improv is broad, and the program is structured to encourage participation by a wide range of technical specialists, researchers, developers, and skilled hobbyists. Proposers are free to reconfigure, repurpose, program, reprogram, modify, combine, or recombine commercially available technology in any way within the bounds of local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Use of components, products, and systems from non-military technical specialties (e.g., transportation, construction, maritime, and communications) is of particular interest.
The specific mechanisms for preserving the central role of commercially available technology in the program are: (1) constrained budgets, and (2) short development periods between award and prototype delivery. The purpose of these mechanisms is to keep the focus of each individual project on the integration of easily procured technology rather than on developing completely new technology. However, new technology development activity – within the bounds of the Improv program structure – is acceptable and encouraged.
1.2 Program Structure
DARPA’s intent for the Improv program is to fund a short feasibility study phase, during which performers will compete for the opportunity to build their proposed prototype. Following the prototype construction phase, some of the prototypes will be selected for evaluation. If performance warrants, DARPA may then further the development of countermeasures or capabilities of interest in separate follow-on programs.
The five sequential steps of the Improv program are illustrated in Figure 1 and further detailed below. Note: the first two steps occur during the solicitation period (i.e., are pre-award).

Solicitation Number: DARPA-BAA-16-22

Agency: Other Defense Agencies
Office: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
Location: Contracts Management Office
