GAP Grind 2015 Long-Range Tactical Shooting Event

This year’s GAP Grind match took place 16-18 October at the K&M Shooting Complex in Finger, Tennessee. Competitors from law enforcement, military and civilian communities participated in what is a fast-paced demanding competition.

Cory West, of Texas, took top honors at the event with a score of 165.00.

Course Of Fire Background:

  • The GAP Grind presents a notoriously challenging opportunity to engage targets—paper, steel, moving and reactive—at distances of up to 1,200 yards, with minimal down-time between stages.
  • The 2015 course was comprised of 20+ stages, in which competitors each fired 200+ shots at long-distance targets, which varied in size and difficulty based on distance and time allotted. Most stages included “stressors” such as time limits or required movements.

Kalashnikov Concern SV-99

The SV-99 was introduced in 1999 and is based on the BI-7 biathlon sporting rifle. This is a bolt action rifle that has the same toggle-locking, straight pull bolt action as the BI-7. The bolt handle swings back and forward to reload and cock the rifle for the next round. The rifle is chambered in .22LR and features a detachable polymer buttstock. The original Izhmash version was equipped with a wooden stock. The SV-99 was designed specifically to address the need for a light but very accurate short range platform.

BAWIDAMANN ROGUE KNIVES ARE AVAILABLE

These knives are designed with a 60 degree angle bend from handle to tip to enhance natural motions from punching to plunging, with the knife being a true extension of the motion. They are designed for off side carry, and have several carry options. The arcs on the ring serve as natural finger/thumb/palm (hypothenar) placement points, and becomes a natural extension of the handle when fully enclosed in the hand in either forward or reverse grips. You also have the option of using the ring in reverse grip (much like a Karambit) but with a straight blade you can still trap and cut with. The recurve blade comes to a hard angle before transitioning to the tip, and this one offers a top edge for a full continuous cut.

These knives have an M.S.R.P. of $350 and available directly from Andrew Bawidamann

THE TWO GREAT MOTIVATORS

As we get ready to slow down the presses to enjoy the Holiday Season with our families, we want to leave our readers with a profound (at least in our opinion) shoot-the-shit topic. As with all shoot-the-shits you can participate by making totally unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change subjects all together. We gladly give you that opportunity all at no charge. Having said that…

Some of society’s luminaries have advanced the theory that fear and greed are the two greatest motivators. This is a polite way of presenting the idea that you can control someone by instilling fear or appeal to their sense of greed. I suppose that one could point to individual cases where those strategies have been effective; however, taking the long view we see that both concepts have failed miserably. Greed has resulted in lackluster performance and fear in insurgency.

Since the tragic events at San Bernardino, the media, liberal and conservative, have been advancing the idea of some great “national fear.” This message is packaged and distributed 24×7. Readers, there is no national fear, I live in a major metropolitan area and I can categorically say to you that no one here is living in fear. However, fear promotion opens windows of opportunities for agendas that we need to be alert to. The liberal community, spearheaded by a biased media, are hoping to use “fear” as the path to attack  2nd Amendment Rights. The conservative community sees “ fear” as a way to point out the failures of an administration.  None, have committed sufficient intellectual capital to address the problems; so the certainty in all this is that you’ll never see clear and effective policy.

What I love about our country is the fact that our people have balls the size of bowling balls, a national trait that applies to man, woman and child. So, blow all this fear crap off; see it for what it is and do what you normally do.

Have A Great Christmas!

Liberty Ammunition’s Silverado .223 Gets High Marks From The National Tactical Officers Association

3-cccef8996dIn Feb-2014, we had the opportunity to test fire the Silverado .223 Remington ammunition and found it to have exceptional accuracy with impressive terminal ballistics.

You can read our review here.

Liberty Ammunition’s lead-free .223 Rem 55 Grain rifle cartridge received a 4.68 out of 5 points for accuracy, lack of over penetration and running flawlessly with no malfunctions.

Bradenton, Fla. (December 2015) – Liberty Ammunition is proud to announce the Silverado .223 Rem 55 grain cartridge was field-tested in the National Tactical Officers Association Member Tested and Recommended Program. The Silverado .223 Rem rifle cartridge received a score of 4.68 out of a possible 5 points. This lead-free 55 grain deep cavity hollow point was tested by NTOA members in various parts of North America and rated on a scale of zero to five in a variety of categories such as design, performance and quality.

All of the testing officers were impressed with the performance of the Silverado .223 Rem 55 grain. The field-testers observed that the cartridges ran flawlessly in their firearms with no failure to feeds (FTF) or malfunctions. The testing officer from Florida “first fired off some

rounds one at a time to make sure everything cycled and ejected properly. No failure to feed or fire issues arose and the ejection pattern seemed consistent. I then did some rapid fire on semi-auto to look for the same things. Again, I had no issues with FTF or fire. I then went to full auto and fired off some bursts, again looking for the usual problems, but there were no issues.” While the testing officer from Wisconsin expected that the extra length of the rounds might cause issues with the cycle of operation of his .223, “when I fired my .223, I did not have any issues with malfunctions/stoppages. The rounds performed flawlessly…. I plan to purchase more rounds and use them as my home defense round.”

The Silverado .223 Rem 55 grain cartridge also rated highly for its accuracy and its ability to limit over penetration while still producing exceptional stopping power. A testing officer from New Jersey decided to test the ammunition for penetration at distances of 50, 100 and 150 yards against both metal and wood backgrounds. He commented that “the round performed very well [during] the penetration test. There was limited over penetration on both of the targets. The point of aim and point of impact from all three distances were extremely true when fired from the Colt M-4 rifles utilized by the team in static positioned drills, as well as movement and shooting drills.” The Floridian testing officer remarked that the “hollow point is fairly unique to this caliber. Here the ammo is designed to expand and fragment like a typical hollow point. Overall, the ammo shot well and kept its accuracy, which I was happy with. I do like the hollow point aspect to it for limiting over penetration, which is very important, especially in the law enforcement application.”

Liberty Ammunition’s Silverado .223 Rem 55 grain is a copper, monolithic, hollow-point, deep cavity fragmenting round. The Silverado .223 Rem ammunition combines extreme velocity with fragmentation to provide extraordinary terminal ballistics. The Silverado .223 Rem rifle cartridge has a velocity of over 3,000 FPS, kinetic energy greater than 1,100 FPE and an accuracy of less than two MOA at 300 meters.

NOTICE TO DRONE OWNERS

A number of our readers may operate drones as a tool while conducting training, videography or both. It’s important that you understand and comply with FAA rules and regulation. There are a number of regulations in place. First you can not operated your drone within a 5 miles radius of an airport that is controlled. If you are operating near an uncontrolled field, you must obtain the permission of the airport operator to fly your drone within a 5 mile radius. You may not fly your drone any higher than 400 feet AGL (above ground level). You will also need to register your drone.

FAA Deputy Administrator Michael G. Whitaker announced on Monday, Dec. 14, that all small UAS owners must register their aircraft no later than Feb. 19, 2016. The new rule pertains to UAS owners who had previously operated an unmanned aircraft weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds including payloads such as on-board cameras, exclusively as a model aircraft The FAA will publish IFRs (Interim Final Rules) to the registry on 15 Dec 2015.

The FAA will open registration to UAS operators through a website that will go live Monday, Dec. 21 through which owners can enter required information surrounding their UAS, such as the operator’s name and information as well as the aircraft’s manufacturer, model name and serial number. Although registration will cost nothing during the initial 30-day period — open in an effort to encourage as many operators as possible to register quickly — owners will be required to pay a $5 fee after Jan. 30, 2016.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SPEAKERS

It’s Friday and just two weeks until Christmas. Where has this year gone! If you’re at all like me you’re amazed but never overwhelmed by the massive number of cluster fucks in progress around the world. Just when you thought things could not be worse, GEICO comes out with its Peter Pan ad. They could not have cast a more annoying little pecker head than that kid. Needless to say we had one heck of a time coming up with a useful shoot-the-shit topic for the week. So, just in time for your Holiday shopping, we decided to touch  on audio speakers.

No component of a modern audio systems is more misunderstood than the speaker system and the average consumer will usually make bad purchasing decisions. Some buyers are under the erroneous assumption that a majority of your audio budget should go into the speakers. This approach is absolutely incorrect and will almost always result in poor performance. Speakers are part of a system integration consisting of electronics and speakers.

There are two families of speaker technologies, cone driven and electrostatic panels; each has its own peculiarity but they all have two properties that we want to understand, SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and Impedance. These two measures are vitally important because they drive amplification requirements and sound characteristics.

SPL is a measure of the speaker’s efficiency. It’s a measure of sound intensity, measured in decibels,  per 1 watt of input power. The higher the value, the more efficient the speaker and the more room filling sound you’ll experience. Typical SPLs run from 80 – 125 db.

Speakers are required to faithfully reproduce a frequency range of 20Hz – 20,000 Hz they do that by converting electrical energy (current) to mechanical energy followed by acoustic pressure. Retailers will generally present a speaker as being 8 ohms, 4 ohms, 2 ohms, etc. I’ve even witnessed a sales associate tell a customer that a 2 ohm speaker is more efficient because of it’s lower impedance which is a vulgar misrepresentation.

Speakers are reactive, meaning that their characteristic impedance changes over its frequency range. Bass frequencies result in a lower impedance while high frequencies result in higher impedances. When presented with a 20 Hz bass note, a speaker’s impedance may momentarily drop to 1 ohm or less. This means that its amplifier will see an almost direct short across its channel(Right or Left) terminals, so you’ll need an amplifier that can instantaneously produce a high amount of current to avoid a highly undesirable anomaly called clipping. So, when buying a speaker you should ask for some indication of its impedance across its frequency range. Electrostatic speakers are notorious current hogs with widely fluctuating impedances across its frequency range.

Cone speakers will usually have a higher SPL and less variability across their frequency range. Therefore, if you’re after a room filling sound, like in a home theater, cone speakers will provide that level of performance and are less demanding on your amplifiers.

If you want a speaker that will precisely place the image of an artist or instrument on the sound stage the electrostatic speaker reigns supreme. They have the lowest SPL and are very demanding on amplifiers, but in a properly laidout listening room you’ll be able to close your eyes and literally feel the presence of the artist or instrument. People often select an electrostatic design because they look artsy then neglect the amplifiers, this approach won’t work with electrostatic designs. If you buy an electrostatic speaker you’ll need to purchase an amplifier capable of delivering high levels of current. Don’t by watts buy current.

We wish you all a fun and safe weekend, and as always, all shoot-the-shit rules apply so, let us hear from you!

RevMedx XSTAT 30 GETS FDA APPROVAL

xstat

In February 2014, we introduced our readers to RevMedx’s XSTAT system designed specifically to rapidly treat gunshot wounds in the field. The XSTAT has been used by the military since 2013 with exceptional results. The FDA has now approved XSTAT for commercial use. The XSTAT works by injecting small sponges into the entry wound channel. As the sponges absorb blood, they expand to provide hemostatic pressure on the wound, preventing additional bleeding. The XSTAT does not replace the tourniquet and is intended for use on wounds where a  tourniquet can not be easily applied. The FDA reports

“Early control of severe bleeding may prevent shock and may be life-saving. According to the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research, 30 to 40 percent of civilian deaths by traumatic injury are the result of hemorrhaging. Of those deaths, 33 to 56 percent occur before the patient reaches a hospital.”

XSTAT 30 is a temporary device for use up to four (4) hours until surgical care is acquired. It should only be used for patients at high risk for immediate life-threatening bleeding from, hemodynamically significant (Advanced Trauma Life Support class 3 or 4 hemorrhagic shock), non- compressible junctional wounds, and when definitive care at an emergency care facility cannot be achieved within minutes.

Commercial availability dates have not been released, nor product pricing, but a $100 price point has been circulated. We strongly recommend that hunters and other enthusiasts add one or two to their IFAK. This is great news that should save a multitude of lives.

Philosophers, who rank up there with psychologists and psychiatrists as useless fields of endeavor and living proof that free markets produce sufficient surpluses to absorb the overhead, would say that in order for good to exist there needs to be bad, which is what drives our annual event.  So, in keeping with that logic we identified one individual, out of several candidates, who in our view brings new meaning to the noun “be·night·ed·ness.”

Mr. Tarantino is either an opportunist, or has spent way too much time with people who’s intellectual capacity is limited to faking orgasms on a set, when he describes cops as murderers.  We’d like to suggest that Mr. Tarantino spend a month or two riding along with LAPD as they perform their jobs. I think the exposure to miscreants and conditions under which officers operate, day in and day out, would add some clarity to what is otherwise a vulgar display of foot-in-mouth.

Adaptive Tactical’s New Tac-Hammer Barrel For The Ruger 10/22

Nampa, Idaho (December 2015) – Adaptive Tactical, LLC, manufacturers of innovative firearm stocks and accessories, has developed a way to improve rifle

accuracy, performance, shouldering and portability with the introduction of its Tac-Hammer Rigid-Core Post-Tension Barrel for Ruger 10/22, 10/22 Takedown, 10/22 Charger and 10/22 Charger Takedown models.

“Many of our earliest memories hunting and shooting in the outdoors include the iconic Ruger 10/22. We have a bit of a soft spot for the rifle and we wanted to do our part to make it a little better. Our Tac-Hammer Barrel gives it the increased accuracy and precision that helps the rifle go from being good to great,” said Gary Cauble, director of sales and marketing for Adaptive Tactical.

The Tac-Hammer Rigid-Core Post-Tension Barrel Package includes a barrel, cantilevered optic rail and front threaded compensator. The barrel delivers the benefits of a bull barrel’s larger diameter and related stiffness – greater accuracy and repeatability of shot – without the added weight. It accomplishes this through a rigid-core, stepped barrel design encased within a post-tension, aluminum shroud. The Tac-Hammer Barrel design is about 40 percent lighter than the standard bull barrel. The included compensator reduces muzzle rise, increasing second and third shot accuracy.

Tac-Hammer Rigid-Core Post-Tension Barrel Features:

  • Barrel: P4140 Chromoly Steel with heat and rust resistant coating
  • Shroud: 6061 aluminum with Cerakote coating
  • Top Rail/Compensator: 6061 aluminum with color matched Cerakote
  • Twist: 1/16 Twist
  • Threaded Barrel End: ½ x 28 – Fits common compensators or suppressors
  • Barrel OD: .920″
  • Barrel Length:
    • Without compensator: 16″
    • With compensator: 17.25″
    • Exposed barrel with compensator: 16.5″
  • Includes Bentz Chamber
  • Available colors: Black, Grey, Dark Earth, Pink, Red

The Tac-Hammer Rigid-Core Post-Tension Barrel is proudly Made in the USA. MSRP $329.99. For more information, please visit www.adaptivetactical.com.

BUSHNELL PRO T350L Tactical Handheld Light

P1000309

Bushnell has a great stocking stuffer for Holiday shoppers, the Bushnell PRO T350L tactical handheld light. The light features three modes of operation; high/low/strobe intermittent and continuous. It uses a CREE LED powered by 2 CR123A batteries that deliver 2.5 hours of runtime.

P1000316Accessing the individual modes is very straight forward; for intermittent use a half press for continuous mode press to click. Bushnell included a lockout switch to prevent inadvertent activation, rotate the switch to the locked position to prevent firing the LED.P1000312

The PRO T350L features an aluminum body for durability and is both shock and water resistant. Other nice features include very aggressive texturing and cranial, which provides “a less than lethal” defensive tool and steel pocket clip.

P1000318

You can purchase this light at your big box stores like The Home Depot for just under $30. But the story gets better; as a bonus, Bushnell includes a micro pocket light with similar design as its larger sibling.

Not a bad deal from Bushnell!

MAGPUL PMAG 10 AK/AKM MOE

DSC_0013

We are extremely impressed with Magpul’s PMAG® 10 AK/AKM MOE®. One of the issues with magazines and the AK patterned rifles is that not all magazine wells are created equal and with the number of AK variants on the market it’s not unusual to run into fit problems. This is particularly common with polymer magazines. Magpul, as usual, has done their homework and we benefit from their thoroughness.

DSC_0015

The PMAG® 10 AK/AKM MOE® perfectly fit and locked in the two AK variants we tested. These magazines not only fit and lock well they also feel great. The beveled magazine plate is a huge plus. Inserting and extracting the magazine in the weapon was vastly improved. This is as a direct result of having a beveled floor plate. Exterior texturing is also excellent; providing an exceptional griping surface.

Other than regulatory compliance for your home state or municipality, these 10 round AK magazines are ideal for a number of applications and readers should consider adding a handful to their existing kit. At $12.95 M.S.R.P., they’re worth every penny. Check them out!

CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE COMING HOME FUN FANTASY

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. For the benefit of new readers, each week we select a topic for general discussion that may or may not be related to the central theme of this blog. Readers are free to comment making unsupported claims, insult anyone they wish to insult, use profanity or change the subject all together without fear of censure or seeing an invoice.

We selected climate change because it has the potential to influence the industry and outdoors activities that we all enjoy so much. Our objective is not to convince you one way or another, instead we’d like to provide you with a baseline understanding so that you the reader can formulate your own thoughts, questions and opinions. There is a lot of bull being presented daily by both liberal and conservative media on the subject and it’s difficult for people to digest the issues. So, we’d like to share our views and thoughts with you. With that introduction let’s get started.

The earth is an ecosystem that is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Nothing about this planet is static but rather an ever-changing dynamic continuum. To look at 100 years of climate data and then draw conclusions and make predictions, on the basis of an infinitesimally miniscule time slice, is not only bad science but a vulgar display of arrogance. We refer to these observations as statistically insignificant and definitely inconclusive. It’s equivalent to predicting gastro intestinal problems by measuring a single fart. It’s simply not done nor is it credible.

The conservative media is quick to jump on the Obama Administration for its interest in climate change, so we took a look at what the EPA was doing in terms of grants for climate change related research and this what we’ve found. Between 2008 – 2014, the EPA awarded $49.9 million in  research grants to academic institutions in climate change research grants. We then looked at the prior 6 year period 2002-2007 inclusive and noted that the EPA grants totaled $60 million. Between 1995-2014, the EPA has awarded academic institutions a total of $121 million to research climate change. So, the numbers tell the story. Our data reflects only EPA investments in climate change research and you can safely assume the total investment to prove, or disprove, climate change is significantly higher, probably in the billion dollar range. Interested readers can look at the EPA’s data by clicking here. This is a huge pot of money that academia has its eye on. Let’s move to grants.

Writing a grant is a time consuming and tedious project. In fact, there are individuals who make a living just writing grants. The key to a successful grant is to link the research topic to a hot button. So, if a researcher interested in the mating behavior of roaches is unsuccessful in getting grant money, he revises his grant proposal describing the research as studying the effects of climate change on roach propagation. The researcher links his real research interest to a “hot button” to secure funding. The grant process is also highly political. The short story is that colleges and universities are all clamoring for grant money, from all sources, hence the recent obsession from academia with climate change research.

Researchers have “linked” climate change to human activity; more specifically, the use of fossil fuels. So, let’s understand what’s driving the increase use of fossil fuels.

The total number of living humans on Earth is now greater than 7 billion. This large global population is a recent development. As recent as 200 years ago the world population was estimated at less than 1 billion. So, we’ve added about 6 billion people to the planet in the last 200 years. Each of these individuals require energy, is a 98.6 F heat source and produce tons of CO2 from breathing; not to mention CH4, methane gas, through the digestive process culminating in fecal matter. In order to survive ALL organisms must convert potential energy sources into kinetic energy. In the process, we generate byproducts such as CO2 and CH4 methane gas; furthermore, this conversion process, potential energy to kinetic energy, is inefficient. This means that it takes more potential energy per given output of kinetic energy. In other words, we produce less kinetic energy than the amount of potential energy needed to produce it – a classical example is the internal combustion engine which has an efficiency of just about 30%. So, we think it’s safe to say that what drives fossil fuel consumption is a rapidly growing global population. Fossil fuels and its byproducts provide electric energy, fertilizers and pesticides that increase crop yields per acre of land, they directly provide lighting and heating in many of the worlds undeveloped nations and fossil fuels and their derivatives satisfy many other needs that support life. At issue, is the concern that in the process of consuming fossil fuels, CO2 and several contaminants are released into the atmosphere that researchers postulate are changing the global climate.

Proponents of the climate change argument share two goals, the first is an aggressive reduction in the use of fossil fuels and aggressively increase renewable energy sources. Both are admirable objectives, but as we all know, the devil is in the details.

Reducing the consumption of fossil fuels without a suitable substitute is equivalent to depriving auger to a bacterial culture in a Petri dish. Although carbon dioxide and sulfur are byproducts of converting the potential energy locked in fossil fuels into kinetic energy, fossil fuels, with current technology, are capable of yielding higher energy outputs than alternative energy sources. A barrel of oil has greater energy yields than current alternative energy sources. Because of that difference, a solar powered electric plant is less efficient than a fuel oil powered plant. The clearest way to present that concept is to say that a 10,000 sq. ft. oil fired electric plant produces more energy than a 10,000 sq. ft. solar powered plant.

The difference in technology efficiencies make alternative energy sources much higher in cost, and because energy has little price elasticity, alternative energy’s higher costs would dramatically reduce consumer disposable incomes and add significantly to the cost of production across the economy. In economics, the concept of price elasticity measures changes in quantity demanded as prices fluctuate. When a product or commodity is price inelastic, it means that quantity demanded remains fairly consistent regardless of selling price. Energy is relatively price inelastic, and because energy is essential to life demand for energy remains high regardless of its selling price.

To accelerate the economy’s conversion to alternative energy sources some believe that restricting domestic energy production from fossil fuels would drive its cost  higher; thereby, making the higher less efficient alternative energy source more cost effective. A move that would quite likely have disastrous consequences for the global economy.

The increasing global population is placing increasing demands on the planet for energy, food, water and air. We don’t believe that the academic community’s preoccupation with climate change is productive. We need to devote our efforts and research to improving the efficiency of energy production so we get a larger bang per barrel of oil, or cubic foot of gas or a ton of coal. We need our support systems to use energy more efficiently and we need to look for ways to increase food production per acre of land. We need to eliminate contaminants that attack and destroy bio regulators like plankton, forests and vegetation (The Guarding has an excellent article that illustrates the point “Earth has lost a third of arable land in past 40 years, scientists say” the problem is not climate change)

Before we sign off, we’d like to close by saying that terrorism is not driven by climate change and represents a much more serious and immediate problem than climate change. Terrorism relies on corrupt and weak local governments, and because investment is risk averse, terrorism’s greatest threat is that it impedes economic development in underdeveloped countries.

From us to you, have a great weekend, be safe and have fun but spend some quality time with your buds and family.

21 Days To Christmas!

RUSSIAN SV338

The Russian SVD chambered in 7.62x54R was and continues to be the workhorse semiautomatic sniper platform in the Russian arsenal. However, Russian military and law enforcement units recognized the need for accuracy that can only be achieved by a bolt action platform. To address that need, Izhmash began production of the SV98, a Vladimir Stronskiy design in 1998. The SV98 was chambered in 7.62x54R and 7.62×51 NATO. The SV98 was subsequently upgraded in 2013 to included an advanced folding stock chassis. Izhmash also developed the SV-338, SV-338M and SV-338 M1 sniper rifles chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum; other than its beefed up action for the magnum load, the SV338 models are similar to the SV98.

New Zealand Defence Force Adopts Glock 17 As Its Service Wide Pistol

New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) military personnel will be issued the Gen 4 Glock 17 pistols to replace their Sig Sauer P226 pistols presently in use force wide. The new pistols will be issued across the Navy, Army, and Air Force in the second half of 2016.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) Dean Paul of the Land Capability Delivery Branch said the Sig Sauer P226 pistols were placed in service during 1992 and were due to be replaced.

“Ensuring we remain a force equipped to succeed means supplying our people with fit-for-purpose personal protection weapons. This is part of our 2020 strategy for enhanced combat capability and we are pleased to be rolling out the new pistols next year,’’ LTCOL Paul said.

Australian company NIOA Nominees Pty Ltd has been awarded the $1.8 million contract to supply the NZDF with about 1,900 of the new pistols. The contract includes the pistols, ancillaries, and through-life support.
