FAA Grants Airworthiness Certificate for Aurora’s Optionally-Piloted UH-1H

Manassas, VA, November 1, 2017 – Aurora Flight Sciences announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted a Special Airworthiness Certificate to Aurora’s newest optionally-piloted aircraft, a UH-1H helicopter. The latest development in the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System (AACUS) program, Aurora has added a complete digital flight control system to create the “Autonomy-enabled UH-1,” or AEH-1.

The UH-1, originally developed in the late 1950s and made famous by its role in the Vietnam War, was chosen by Aurora for its latest conversion to a robotic vehicle. The Aurora UH-1H, a later version of the UH-1 built in 1977, was initially certified under FAA Order 8130.2, which covers “inhabited” experimental aircraft such as homebuilt and other developmental aircraft. The latest certification under FAA Order 8130.34 permits Optionally-Piloted Aircraft (OPA) operation with only a Safety Pilot required to monitor the controls. “The Special Airworthiness Certificate is a significant validation of the program’s capabilities by the FAA,” said John Langford, Aurora Chairman and CEO. “The OPA technology not only enhances the UH-1H system but will expand the operational capability of the mission in the field.”

By focusing on safety and maturity in the digital flight control system, the AEH-1 permits the rapid development and test of emerging rotorcraft autonomy technologies. The aircraft is currently flying as the testbed for Aurora’s Tactical Autonomous Aerial Logistics System (TALOS) technology. The UH-1H is the third manned aircraft Aurora has converted to robotic-controlled or OPA operation. Other conversions include a Diamond DA42 and a Cessna C208 Caravan. The MZ-4P with Piston Operation System is a 5.56X45mm automatic weapon compatible with NATO ammunition and all other variations of 5.56X45mm ammunition and magazines, and is available in two barrel lengths – 11.5″ and 14.5″. Both lengths feature upper and lower case aluminum 7075 T6 material and an advanced Piston Operation System which delivers a consistent rate of fire while eliminating gas exiting at the rear of the rifle, even when using a suppressor. The rifle is also easy to disassemble and clean by any soldier on the combat field.

The MZ-300 is a 7.62x35mm caliber, .300AAC Blackout automatic weapon available with EMTAN_MZ300optional barrel lengths of 9”, 11.5”, and 14.5”. It utilizes 5.56x45mm standard bolts and magazines without any alterations, and is an ideal solution for automatic and semi-automatic firing with short barrels and suppressors. The MZ-300 delivers greater terminal ballistics effects such as stopping power and reduced penetration, with an option of automatic firing with suppressors.

The National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) Announces Educational Scholarship Program Applications Now Open

The James Torkar Educational Scholarship Program application period is open from Nov. 1, 2017 through April 1, 2018 for dependent children of active NTOA “Individual” members.


Doylestown, Pa. (November 2017) – The National Tactical Officers Association

(NTOA) is pleased that the James Torkar Educational Scholarship Program application period is now open from Nov. 1, 2017 through April 1, 2018. This program benefits dependent children of members with active NTOA “Individual” memberships that are at least 16 years old and U.S. citizens. It provides funding for college tuition and other eligible expenses, such as room and board, required books, required supplies, required equipment, mandatory fees and / or special needs services.

For the 2017/2018 Scholarship period, two, $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to each region: Eastern, Central and Western.

Scholarships may be awarded one of two ways:

  1. The creation and funding of an IRS 529 College Savings Plan.
  2. Direct payment to the educational institution.

Under current IRS regulations, a 529 plan fund grows tax-free from federal income tax and when used for qualified higher educational expenses may be withdrawn free from federal income taxes. The NTOA Educational Scholarships will be awarded with a parent or duly appointed guardian as the owner and the dependent child as the beneficiary.

Michael Kassnar, VP of IWI, Announces Retirement

Kassnar, a firearms industry veteran who spearheaded multiple brands, including IWI, to the forefront of success

Harrisburg, Pa. (October 2017) – Michael Kassnar, Vice President of Sales and Marketing forIWI US, Inc., a subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd., has announced his retirement from IWI, effective immediately.

“I’ve reached a point in my career where I feel comfortable enough to step back and let others take the reins,” Kassnar commented. “I’ve been very fortunate to have had such a long and interesting career in an industry that I am truly passionate about.”

Prior to bringing the highly successful IWI brand to the US, Kassnar’s history within the shooting sports industry began when he started to work for his father in 1976 at Kassnar Imports, Inc. in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. By the time 1989 rolled around, he had started his own business, K.B.I. Inc., importing IMI’s Jericho pistols, Russian and Hungarian small arms, Armscor 1911 pistols, and a few years later added the popular Charles Daly line of over & under, side-by-side, semi-auto and pump-action shotguns. In early 2010, the marketplace shifted and K.B.I. formally closed its doors.

Always the entrepreneur, Kassnar started a new company, Trans World Arms, LLC and continued with the Charles Daly Defense line adding his first American made MSR’s and carbines to the product line. In 2013, the public demand for Israeli made firearms, especially the much sought after TAVOR® bullpup, caught Kassnar’s eye and utilizing his many international contacts, he was able to bring the TAVOR to the US.

And so, with the closing of TWA’s doors, IWI US, Inc., the subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd. opened in the same facility that once held Kassnar Imports and K.B.I. As IWI US’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Kassnar was responsible for bringing the iconic bullpup to market in an aggressively AR-style marketplace. With his industry-wide reputation as a fair and honest business partner, he was able to open doors in the distribution channel and media outlets that resulted in the TAVOR outselling its initial production run by 300% in its first year, as well as earning it American Rifleman’s Golden Bullseye Rifle of the Year for 2014. IWI US also won “Importer of the Year” from the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) for two consecutive years 2014 – 2015.

“I am leaving IWI US in good hands with Casey Flack, our CEO, at the helm,” Kassnar added. “I look forward to catching up with friends and family and some long overdue personal projects.”

Kassnar expressed his gratitude to all of his colleagues at IWI US, IWI Israel, and within the industry and did mention the possibility of attending the upcoming 2018 SHOT Show to reconnect with old friends at a more leisurely pace.

Marines In Training at MCDSD and Pendleton Exposed to E. coli

Base officials announced yesterday that 300 Marines-in-training at Marine Corps Depot San Diego along with some personnel at Camp Pendleton have been exposed to the E.coli pathogen.

Escherichia coli is a proteobacteria normally transmitted via the oral-fecal route. E. coli is usually an indicator of raw sewage contamination of potable water or food supply contamination. It can enter the food supply from food handlers failing to wash their hands after excretion and wearing latex gloves while food handling The bacteria can live in the intestinal track of animals and humans.

E. coli pathology:

E. coli O157:H7 is one of the most infective strains that can cause food poisoning. It  can lead to bloody diarrhea and kidney failure when one gets infected by contaminated ground beef, unpasteurized milk or contaminated water. Some important symptoms are diarrhea that is acute and severe, either bloody or not bloody, stomach cramping, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and fever. The causes can usually clear up on their own in 1-3 days with no treatment required. However, patients should avoid dairy products because those products may induce temporary lactose intolerance, and therefore make the diarrhea worse.

At this year’s International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Philadelphia, PA, GLOCK presented the Drug Enforcement Administration Survivors Benefit Fund (DEASBF) with a contribution for $30,000 and donated $50,000 to the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).

On hand to receive the donation on behalf of the DEASBF was Chairman Richard Crock.  This marked the ninth annual significant donation to the DEASBF by GLOCK, Inc. “GLOCK has a long history of supporting both the individuals who go into harm’s way and their families,” stated GLOCK National Sales Manager Bob Radecki.  “We are proud to contribute to this great organization which makes such a vital impact in the communities in which we all live.”

DEA Survivors Benefit Fund Chairman Crock stated, “the fund would not exist without donors and partners like GLOCK.  Currently, the Benefit Fund pays line of duty death and continuing education benefits to the families of DEA Agents and Task Force Officers killed in the line of duty.”  Currently the fund finances the education of 8 children, all of whom lost their father in the line of duty.

Receiving the contribution for C.O.P.S. were Executive Director Dianne Bernhard, Director of Operations Shelly Jones, and Development Director Lauren Crisman.  “The families of our fallen law enforcement heroes are supported every year by GLOCK,” said C.O.P.S. Executive Director Dianne Bernhard. “GLOCK honors these heroes by helping to ensure their sacrifice will never be forgotten, nor will their families. C.O.P.S. could not do what we do without GLOCK.”

ASP Promotes Daryell Harmon to VP, Law Enforcement Sales

Appleton, WI, October 30, 2017—Armament Systems and Procedures (ASP) has promoted Daryell Harmon to Vice President, Law Enforcement Sales. Harmon started with ASP in 2011 as a Regional Sales Director, eventually becoming North American Sales Director, and most recently, Law Enforcement Sales Manager.

Harmon’s first exposure to ASP was with the Dallas Police Department, where he served as an officer from 1999 to 2011. As part of his role as a training officer, Harmon—who had attained the rank of Sergeant with DPD—became an ASP Instructor, and later a Trainer, teaching other instructors.
Armament Systems’ CEO Kevin Parsons says that Harmon quickly got the company’s attention in his early days as a trainer: “Daryell was a standout in his leadership skills, as well as his command of our training programs and product expertise—all qualities that we look for when we hire for our internal LE team—and we knew we wanted him aboard.” Harmon says that leaving his career as a police officer was a difficult decision, but that two factors convinced him to take the leap. “First, it was a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity,” he says, “and second, because it gave me the chance to serve other officers around the world, by delivering products and skills that I know can help protect them.”

A customer asks for a 100 round box of Federal, brass cased, 115gr 9mm. The associate turns around and retrieves a box from the shelf; in the process, the employee accidentally drops the box, which was followed by a very loud KABOOM! Two elderly customers fled the area shouting there’s a mass killing! The two rounds to the right of the exploded shell casing were retrieved from a customer’s shopping basket on the opposite side of the ammo counter!

FN America, LLC, announces the mandatory recall of certain FN M249S® semi-automatic, belt-fed rifles in both standard and PARA configurations. A recently identified design issue within the hammer group of the rifle may adversely affect the rifle’s reliability. Under certain circumstances, a reset failure within the hammer group may cause the M249S to cease to function, causing an unsafe firing event. To correct this condition and restore consistent, proper and safe operation of the firearm, it is necessary to replace the hammer group.

FN is instructing customers to discontinue use of these rifles immediately and return affected products to FN directly for installation of a new hammer group, at no cost.

Marine Corps Veteran New Store Manager at Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop

Christopher Nolan, a Marine Corps Infantry Veteran, hired as the new store manager for the Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop at the Civilian Marksmanship Park in Talladega, Alabama.

Anniston, Ala. (October 2017) – Creedmoor Sports, the precision shooting products manufacturer and supplier, announce Marine Corps Infantry Veteran, Christopher Nolan, has accepted the position of store manager for the Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop at the Talladega, Alabama, Civilian Marksmanship Park.

Nolan served as a Squad Leader in the United States Marine Corps Infantry for a little over 12 years, completing five combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. As a Squad Leader, Nolan was responsible for his team and the equipment and weapons. Nolan also attends the Jacksonville State University as a student earning a degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. His leadership and team building skills, as well as his experience in the management and logistics of weapons, optics, gear and equipment, will provide Nolan with the background to take on the management of the state-of-the-art Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop.

“I am extremely honored to offer the management and leadership skills I’ve honed in serving our country at one of the best shooting facilities in the country,” Nolan said. “The Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop is a one-shop-stop for the experienced or beginning shooter and I look forward to getting to know everyone and continuing to pass on my experience and love of the shooting sports.”

The Talladega Marksmanship Park is a 500-acre facility located just outside the famous Talladega Superspeedway. It includes a 600-yard rifle range, a 100-yard multi-purpose range and a 50-yard pistol range. It also includes 15 action pistol bays, a trap field, 5-stand, and a 15 star ion sporting clays field with automated trap machines.  The CMP Park Club house is a 13,000-square foot facility overlooking the 60-yard range and Alabama mountain views. The club house includes classrooms, lounge areas and the Creedmoor Sports Pro Shop. The well-stocked Pro Shop features an array of firearms supplies, equipment and memorabilia. The Marksmanship Park opened their doors in 2015 hosting firearms safety courses, clinics and a line-up of CMP games and match events, including a number of public and CMP special events.

The chassis is machined on MPA’s CNC Horizontal Machining Centers to exacting tolerances from 6061 aluminum. MPA’s unique pocketing system reduces weight and increases the structural integrity of the chassis. The chassis also includes a built-in bubble level, thumb notch, night vision bridge and lower mounted Picatinny rail. The new MPA Enhanced Vertical Grip is also included. It is also compatible with a user locatable barricade stop system, which requires the purchase of an optional MPA BA Rotating Barricade Stop.

The MPA 224BA Bolt Action Rifle includes a precision gun drilled, reamed and honed Spencer / MPA rifle barrel made from 416RQ stainless steel. The hand lapped barrel is bore and land inspected on a video borescope. The chamber is indicated within 0.0001″ or less to the bore of the rifle.

The MPA produced buttstock features an adjustable length of pull, adjustable cheek riser and bag rider. The length of pull and cheek position are locked in place via a set of screws that are embedded into the buttstock body. It provides a very strong lockup of the cheek riser plate and recoil plate assembly.

In standard, featureless and fixed mag rifle versions, DSI produces rifles for all 50 states, including those with restrictive laws.

Oakdale, NY (October 2017) – Dark Storm Industries (DSI), a New York based firearms manufacturer, may have gotten its start filling a void for sourcing and selling quality AR parts years ago, but soon found an underserved niche in manufacturing AR-style rifles for states with the most restrictive firearms ownership laws: California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington D.C. and their own home state of New York.

Besides building standard AR style rifle models, DSI produces fixed magazine and what they call “featureless” models for the most restrictive states, thus ensuring responsible firearms enthusiasts can legally own an outstanding American-made rifle for sport or protection. The featureless models may not have a pistol grip or adjustable stock, but what they don’t lack is performance. The DSI Featureless DS-10 Typhoon in 6.5 Creedmoor is another example of DSI’s business philosophy to bring superior firearms design and production to responsible citizens in all 50 states.

The DS-10 Typhoon Featureless is a mid-length direct impingement gas system AR style rifle built from a DS-10 billet 7075 aluminum lower receiver and a DS-10 billet upper with a forward assist and ejection port cover.  The lower is machined to work with the Thordsen FRS-15 rifle stock without the need for an adapter or spacer. The FRS stock was designed to address the restrictive laws in several states that characterize pistol grips and adjustable stocks as features of “assault rifles.” It replaces the adjustable stock and pistol grip with a super ergonomic stock that still gives the user a solid stock “feel” in shouldering with a rubber buttpad, checkered grip and multiple sling hard points. It comes with the Thordsen enhanced buffer tube cover which features QD sling sockets on both sides.

More DSI built features include a charging handle with an extended latch for improved grip, a DSI billet ambidextrous 90-degree safety selector and DS-10 nitride bolt carrier group. Additionally, the featureless Typhoon sports the DSI 15-inch Ultralight Narrow Profile M-Lok handguard Cerakoted in either black, FDE or ODG and ready to accept a variety of lights, scopes or laser options, as the DS-10 does not come with sights.

Although the featureless DS-10 Typhoon 6.5 Creedmoor was intentionally designed for the California and New York customer, many gun enthusiasts would find the unique stock just as comfortable as a traditional stock for hunting or tactical purposes. Dark Storm Industries also produces the Typhoon 6.5 Creedmoor in a fixed magazine version and a standard rifle version.

New Zealand Defence Forces Select Barrett As Their Sniper Rifle Supplier

New Zealand is  acquiring 12.7mm M107A1 anti-materiel rifle and the .338 Lapua Magnum Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) sniper rifle. Delivery of 40 M107A1 and 42 MRAD rifles is scheduled to begin in Q2 of 2018. The rifles will be delivered with associated tripods, day sights, suppressors and ballistic computers, at a cost of NZ$4 million ($2.8 million).

As of this writing, it does not appear that the Barrett M107A1 will replace the in-service Accuracy International AW50; however, the MRAD will replace the existing AW 7.62mm sniper rifle from Accuracy International.

MPA BA Chassis – RAT System

Weighing one pound, the RAT Base attaches a variety of accessories to the 1.5″ Dovetail Cut on the MPA BA Chassis System. A pocket is machined into the RAT Base bottom that includes a hole pattern designed to accept a series of accessories that will attach to the Base, which allows the shooter to utilize the RAT System. This permits it to attach to the RAT Dovetail Adaptor Plate mounted to the MPA Spigot Mount. An Atlas Bipod will also mount directly to the RAT Base. MSRP $69.99.

The RAT Dovetail Adaptor Plate attaches to the Spigot Mount on the MPA BA Chassis System and allows the shooter to run the RAT System and all the accessories on both the chassis body and the Spigot Mount. It will also be needed to run the Magnetospeed Adaptor on the MPA BA Chassis. To install, simply remove the existing Picatinny rail from the Spigot Mount and attach the RAT Dovetail Adaptor Plate. The RAT Magnetospeed Adaptor is designed to provide an attachment method of a Magnetospeed V2 or V3 to the RAT Dovetail Adaptor Plate (Spigot Mount) on the MPA BA Chassis. A CALL TO SHOOT THE SHIT

If you’re new to this blog, on Fridays we usually have a shoot the shit with our readers. The shoot the shit can be about anything, even if it’s unrelated to the site’s central theme. Readers are free to make unsupported comments, use profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether.

I’ll kick this thing off by asking for reader assistance. I have been struggling to find out how the hell one becomes a Fellow. There are Fellows all over the place, on the news, they have Fellow business cards etc., but how do you become a fellow? I have a Masters and I think I’d make a great Fellow but I don’t know how to become one.

If you don’t already have big plans for the weekend, or  aren’t heading out to the range, go see The Foreigner starring Jackie Chan. Jackie is a restaurateur in London during the Irish Republican Army (IRA) conflicts. He looses his only living child when a bomb is detonated outside of a London dress shop. The rest of the movie involves Jackie searching for the culprits. It’s not until late in the movie that it’s revealed that Jackie was an operative during the Vietnam War. It’s a great movie and one you can take the whole family to see. Great flick!

Anybody worn out with the Harvey Weinstein extravaganza? Personally, I think Harvey may be a reincarnated diesel boat sailor, but here is the reality. Harvey is a product of his environment and many of the people that condemn Harvey also have skeletons in their closets. In Hollywood the agents tap the talent (male, female, gay, straight or gender undecided). If it moves they tap it. They then refer them to a director or producer who also taps them. They in turn pass then on to a financial planner who also taps the talent, and they in turn refer them out to a therapists who too taps the talent.

Last but not least, note that everyone and their mother has a theory on the WHY behind the Las Vegas shootings. Here’s ours …

Steve Wynn, during a Fox News interview, indicated that Paddock and his girlfriend frequently visited the Wynn Resort, Las Vegas. Mr. Wynn continued indicating that neither Paddock nor his girlfriend took a sip of alcohol; while gambling, through room service or dinning. He further indicated that Paddock and his girlfriend were at all times coherent, reasonable and lucid. So, my theory is that Paddock had either converted or developed an affinity with Islam. As a convert or sympathizer, he deliberately targeted the Country Western concert possibly making a mental connection between Christianity and country music genre .

I don’t believe the event had political motivations, but I do hypothesize that ideology was possibly its catalyst. The absence of footprints openly indicating an affiliation with Islam,  ISIS, AQ or AQAP does not exclude  ideology from being the motive.

Llama took the classic 1911 and shrunk it down to make it easier to conceal and in the process created the Llama Micro Max. Despite its size, this firearm still functions and performs like a full size with a Novak-Style rear sight, fiber optic front site, a true beavertail grip safety and a slide that racks easily and smoothly. The Micro Max has a flared and lowered ejection port to eliminate hang-ups and front and rear slide serrations to provide a better grip. A skeletal combat hammer combined with a combat trigger creates sleek aesthetics, while the throated forged steel barrel adds durability. The Micro Max has a standard slide stop for added safety.
