NSSF Praises Nomination of Chuck Canterbury for ATF Director

NEWTOWN, Conn. – The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearms industry trade association, praised President Donald Trump’s nomination of Chuck Canterbury to become the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Canterbury would succeed Acting Director Regina “Reggie” Lombardo, who filled the position in the acting capacity since May 1, 2019.

“President Trump’s confidence in nominating Mr. Canterbury to lead the ATF shows his dedication to ensuring continued cooperation from the firearms industry,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Mr. Canterbury’s nomination by President Trump for confirmation by the Senate demonstrates the president’s commitment to our nation’s leading firearms law enforcement and regulatory agency. Mr. Canterbury brings a proven record of performance that will provide the ATF, and the firearms and ammunition industry, the leadership that is deserved.”

Canterbury, currently the President of the Fraternal Order of Police, would bring to the Director’s office 26 years of direct law enforcement experience as well as 16 years’ experience in his current role. This provides Canterbury the perspective of the field agents whom he would lead and experience in collaborating and coalition-building with affinity groups. NSSF is proud of the partnerships and cooperation it has relied upon with the ATF and is confident that will continue.

The ATF has only had one confirmed director, B. Todd Jones from 2013-2015, since the position was elevated to require U.S. Senate confirmation. Acting Director Brandon succeeded Jones in 2015 and guided the ATF through improvements benefitting manufacturers and retailers. Brandon brought a renewed focus on open cooperation between the ATF and industry, shepherded the transition to e-forms, ensuring the agency had adequate resources at both the headquarters and field offices and has been a reliable partner in NSSF’s flagship Don’t Lie for the Other GuyTM and Operation Secure Store®campaigns, to prevent straw purchase and the theft and robbery of firearms from retailers. Acting Director Brandon retired April 30 and Attorney General William P. Barr named Acting Director Lombardo to lead the ATF in the interim.

ASA Industry Forum & Gunwerks joins as Tier 3 Sponsor of ASA

Second ASA Industry Forum a Success

Last week, the American Suppressor Association hosted our Second Annual Industry Forum in Washington, DC. Industry executives met with ATF leadership, representatives from the White House, and elected officials to press for action on modernizing the NFA process. Several of our initiatives include:

  1. Modernize the NFA transfer process, which has not been materially changed since 1934.
  2. Develop industry sound testing standards.
  3. Nominate and confirm a permanent director for the ATF.

The Forum kicked off on Wednesday, when our group traveled to the NFA Division in Martinsburg, WV to discuss our frustrations with the inefficiencies in the transfer process with ATF executive leadership. Following the trip to Martinsburg, we drove back to Washington, DC where participants were treated to a rare tour of the Smithsonian Museum’s firearms vault (sorry, no pictures were allowed).
On Thursday morning, we met with White House officials, briefing the Administration on the NFA process, transfer backlogs, and proposed solutions. On Thursday afternoon, forum participants conferenced with a panel of audiologists and research scientists representing academia and government to discuss the development of standardized sound testing protocols for suppressors.
On Friday, we met with 10 elected officials from around the country to make them aware of our key initiatives and ask for their support. Make no mistake, we will not stop fighting for your pro-suppressor rights until all of our work is done!

Don’t let your children fall into that trap; instead, take a few moments to teach them what the true meaning of Memorial Day is. Then have an enjoyable weekend filled with grilling, beaches or whatever else floats your boat, but above all, be safe.

List of Serial Numbers of Recalled Products

Kimber Mfg. Inc. (“Kimber”) has discovered a quality issue involving:
(a) factory installed optics versions of Aegis handguns and KHX handguns shipped from January 2018 through May 13, 2019;
(b) Optics Ready versions of Aegis handguns and KHX handguns shipped from January 2018 through May 13, 2019; and
(c) the separately sold optics installation plate compatible with Aegis and KHX Optics Ready handguns (part numbers 4000750, 4000753, and 400754) shipped from product launch through May 13, 2019.  This recall affects all such products shipped from product launch through May 13, 2019.
This quality issue could allow the optics assembly to become separated from the handgun when it is fired, presenting a risk of serious personal injury to the user.
This Recall Notice applies only to the Serial Numbers of those products listed in the List of Serial Numbers of Recalled Products linked to this document. If your handgun is among those in this List of Serial Numbers of Recalled Products, or if your separately purchased optics installation plate (part numbers 4000750, 4000753, and 400754) was either shipped to you from Kimber or purchased by you from a retail seller between January 2018 and May 13, 2019, please contact us as described below immediately, and do not load, use, sell, or otherwise make available your handgun, as the condition may lead to serious personal injury. Kimber is voluntarily recalling the affected products to help ensure the personal safety of the parties that purchased and/or used them.
If your handgun has a serial number listed in the List of Serial Numbers of Recalled Products linked to this document, please contact Kimber immediately as specified below.  If (a) your handgun has factory installed optics, (b) your Optics Ready handgun has had the separately purchased optics installation plate installed, or (c) you have in your possession the separately sold optics installation plate, but it has not been installed on your handgun, Kimber will provide a Return Merchandise Authorization (“RMA”) and arrange for the handgun slide* and/or optics installation plate to be returned to Kimber for examination and remedial measures as may be necessary, free of charge.

Unique rifle buttstock at SOFIC 2019

A unique modular buttstock supplied to elite tactical teams is tipped to be a hit at this week’s Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) in Tampa, Florida (20-23rd  May).

Riot and ballistic face shields are essential for law enforcement officers in active shooter and riot control scenarios. The  problem with these face shields is that once fully lowered they interfere with the assault rifles and/or less-lethal baton round guns that armed officers are equipped with.

164 year old survival equipment manufacturers, BCB International Ltd, have brought to market the FRAMM®; an adjustable and foldable stock that allows firearms officers to comfortably shoulder, aim and discharge their firearms in all firing positions while wearing a ballistic helmet with the visor fully lowered.

BCB International’s FRAMM® Project Manager, Philippe Minchin, said:  “Since production was launched in late 2018,  orders have been received from elite tactical units in Europe like the GIGN in France whose officers use ballistic helmets with face shields.  There are multiple variants of the stock to fit onto most in service firearms.

‘Visitors to our booth (booth 1804) will be able to see for themselves some  of the FRAMM® buttstock variants we can offer including the H&K G36 FRAMM® buttstock used by the GIGN and a SIG SAUER MCX compatible FRAMM® buttstock.

“The FRAMM® is not your typical rifle buttstock.  It removes the need for both non-visored and visored officers to have to alternate between buttstocks to fit the situation they are faced with. At a press of a button, the FRAMM® enables an officer to switch from a classic straight alignment to a lowered setting of their choosing thereby eliminating the risk of their helmet visors or respirator masks interfering with the shouldering, aiming and firing of their weapon.   The FRAMM® is the modular stock to suit all their mission requirements.”

Production has been launched for the H&K G36, B&T 40×46 and HK-UMP variants of the stock.

Production of FRAMM variants for the following firearms is planned in the near future: FN HERSTAL-SCAR, HK-MP5 A2, BERETTA-ARX 160, HK-MP5K-PDW, REMINGTON-ACR, CZ-805 A1 BREN, SIG SAUER-550/551.., SIG SAUER MCX, B&T-APC556

8x22mm Ammunition for the Classic Type 94 and 14 Nambu Pistol Now Available at Steinel Ammunition

Steinel Ammunition Co. developed an 83-grain load 8x22mm FMJ round specifically for this popular early to mid-20th century Japanese pistol.

Twinsburg, Ohio (May 2019) – To collectors of military small arms, the Type 94 Nambu pistol is a popular choice. Now, Steinel Ammunition has developed a new round specifically for the Type 94 and Type 14 Nambu pistols. The 83gr. FMJ round comes 25 to a box and has the “8×22 Nambu” head stamp on the brass casing. With a muzzle velocity of 1,040 FPS, it shoots clean and consistently, making it an ideal round for target plinking.

Lieutenant General Kijirō Nambu, often considered the John Browning of Japanese small arms innovation, developed the initial Nambu pistol in 1902, some say based on the Mauser C96 pistol. The initial model, the Type A, manufactured by the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal, was not adopted by the Japanese Imperial Army; instead, they were sold to China and Siam (present day Thailand). A Type B Nambu was developed, smaller in size than its predecessor, and fired a 7mm round.

By 1925, the Type 14 Nambu was developed and adopted for issue to non-commissioned officers in the Japanese Army. Over 400,000 Type 14 Nambu’s were produced and became a popular World War II collectible with returning Marines. William B. Ruger was so impressed with the Type 14 Nambu, it is believed several of the pistol’s features were incorporated in the Ruger 22 semi-auto auto pistols including the Ruger Standard and Ruger Mark series.

The Type 94, 8mm Nambu pistol was developed for the Imperial Japanese Army in 1929 and after extensive adaptations, was officially adopted by the Japanese Army in 1934. Before production was halted, over 71,000 Type 94 Nambu pistols were produced. Unlike its predecessors, the Type 94 featured a concealed hammer with a stronger firing pin mechanism to replace the Type 14 style striker system that was prone to damage. Additionally, the mainspring was placed around the barrel instead of at the rear of the barrel. The Type 94 also used a rising-block locking system, and the grip was smaller in the Type 94’s as opposed to earlier models.

“Unless you are adept at loading your own ammunition, we find many classic firearms owners are just keeping these unique historical pieces in the safe. So many Marines who served in the Pacific theater during World War II either captured or picked up one of these Type 14 o 94 Nambu pistols. They are incredibly fun to shoot, offer light recoil and their unique design is still copied by firearm designers today. Our 8x22mm 83 grain round was carefully researched and developed to maximize performance and accuracy at a very affordable price.” Andy Steinel, president of Steinel Ammunition Co., explained.

LMT Defense Announces Award with Estonian Defence Forces

After an extensive 2 year tender and testing process, the Estonian Defence Forces have selected LMT Defense.  The original competition had 12 companies respond to the call for tenderers.  This week LMT Defense was finally confirmed as the chosen winner.  LMT Defense is honored to be selected to supply complete small arms solutions to the Estonian Defence Forces, EDF.  The rifle selected is the LMT MARS family of rifles, including the AR 15 type and AR 10 type rifles in addition to 40mm Grenade Launchers.

The initial deliveries of rifles and accessories will commence in 2019 and is projected to be completed by 2021 with options for future modernization over the next 20 years.

FN to Unveil Prototype 6.5-Caliber MK 48 Mod 2 Machine Gun at 2019 SOFIC Conference

(McLean, VA – May 20, 2019) FN America, LLC, maker of a majority of small arms for the U.S. military, is excited to announce that the company will unveil the prototype for the newest variant of the MK 48 machine gun chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor at the 2019 Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC). The development of this machine gun, which joins FN’s other 6.5 offerings, was undertaken as part of FN’s response to USSOCOM’s qualification of the caliber last year.

Prototype 6.5-Caliber MK 48 Mod 2 Machine Gun

The prototype FN MK 48 Mod 2 6.5CM features the latest upgrades for FN’s series of light and medium machine guns, including an adjustable stock for length of pull and cheek height; improved, locking charging handle; improved, double-notched sear; improved handguard with 3-, 6- and 9-o’clock positions with improved bipod; and, more robust feed tray latch, ensuring the feed tray cover locks into place during reloads. Once development is complete, existing MK 48 Mod 1 models can be configured at the armorer level to the Mod 2 variant or newest caliber with the addition of the upgrade kit and barrel conversion.

The FN MK 48 Mod 0, adopted as a USSOCOM program of record in 2003, was developed from FN Herstal’s 7.62x51mm FN MINIMI® at the request for a compact and easily-maneuverable machine gun in a heavier caliber. The improvements to the MK 48 were also incorporated into the M249 series and is in service with USSOCOM as the MK 46 5.56x45mm machine gun. In addition, FN also holds current USSOCOM contracts for the MK 17 7.62-caliber carbine and MK 20 SSR precision rifle.

INDRA AND THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF MADRID TRAIN THE NEW GENERATION OF EXPERTS IN CYBER-DEFENSE

Madrid, May 20, 2019.- Indra, in collaboration with the UPM’s (Technical University of Madrid for its Spanish initials) School of Telecommunications Engineering, within the framework of the Indra University-Industry Chair and the UPM’s master’s course in Cybersecurity, tested the capabilities of the new generation of cyber-defense experts.

The students recently faced some of the challenges that can be encountered in the event that a terrorist group or an enemy country tried to attack companies or basic services in their country through cyberspace.

The attendees faced these challenges in an environment of the utmost realism, made possible by the Indra Cyber Range platform.

This is the very same field of operations that experts of the Joint Cyber-Defence Command, NATO and several European and Ibero-American armies, as well as EU police forces, have used for their training.

Within this field of operations, the students from Telecommunications Technologies and Services Engineering and from the University Master’s course in Telecommunications Engineering carried out an exercise in forensic analysis, in which they had to investigate an attack and collect all possible evidence.

As for the students of the Cybersecurity Master’s course, they carried out a penetration or black box pentesting training to identify the vulnerabilities of a network and another one on steganography or detection of hidden information in digital files.

The completed tests on Cyber Range allowed future professionals to measure the degree to which they have mastered the theoretical knowledge. Indra’s platform incorporates gamification techniques to promote competitiveness. It also speeds up learning by adapting the test to the level of each participant.

The students connected with their own computer to the platform that is hosted in the cloud, in the Indra Data Processing Center, which is located in a building equipped with maximum security measures and complies with NATO standards.

The use of state-of-the-art smart tools such as Cyber Range is the only possible way to train, in time, the huge number of cyber-experts that will be needed in the coming years. It is estimated that in 2022, Europe will have a shortfall of 350,000 specialists, a figure that will soar to 1.5 million professionals all over the world. Having them is vital for the security of countries and for the development of economies, which are becoming increasingly digitalized and interconnected.

(Pillager, MN) – Kahr Firearms Group is proud to announce the completion of the Magnum Research “13 Hours Desert Eagles” Project to benefit veteran foundations.
Last year, Kahr Firearms Group announced a fundraising collaboration with John “TIG” Tiegen, member of the Benghazi Annex Security team, hero of the Benghazi attack and co-author of the book 13 Hours:  The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi. Together, they developed a project to help support veteran foundations across the country by donating a special collection of Desert Eagle pistols.
The “13 Hours Desert Eagles” Project was completed this spring and raised over $150,000, with 100% of the proceeds donated to veteran based charities. In staying with the “13 Hours” theme, the project offered thirteen Special Edition Magnum Research .50AE Desert Eagle pistols featuring the Kryptek Typhon pattern, and engravings of the TIG logo, TIG’s signature and the Beyond the Battlefield logo – the foundation TIG and his wife Margaret founded. The pistols are numbered 1 through 13 and were provided to veteran organizations for their fundraising events, each personally chosen by TIG.
“This project has been an honor to be a part of. When the idea first arose for the thirteen guns, I never imagined we would be able to help raise this amount of money,” says Jodi DePorter, Director of Marketing at Kahr Firearms Group. “We, of course, must thank Tig and his wife, Margaret, for their unending commitment to helping veterans and working with us on this collaboration. You’re Grounded !

TGIF, we’ve made it through another week! I hope you’ve all had a productive and incident free week. I’ve been working on a number of reviews so stay tuned. I’m looking forward to the weekend as John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum hits the theaters tomorrow, I’m looking forward to two hours and ten minutes of an action packed performance not to mention Halle Berry. I’d let her put me into a sinkaku.

As customary, we kickoff the weekend with a shoot the shit. This is a social interaction that is far more effective than paying some jackass who studied psychology so they could understand themselves $150+ per hour so he can tell you that you are fantasizing about having your head buried in Halle Berry’s crotch. No shit Sherlock!

I want everyone of my readers to have at least one shoot the shit per week. Here’s how you do that. You announce the shoot the shit and location. Once your group is assembled start talking about anything. It’s important to remember that participants need not know anything about the topic. Let people make comments and express opinions even without supporting the idea. It simply doesn’t matter. Participants can use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. However, if you can’t get one going on your own feel free to participate in ours.

So let’s get started…

A few of my readers fly drones recreationally. For those doing that, gone are the days when you can go to the backyard with your kid and fly your DJI. The FAA will be implementing some changes that will place some pretty strict restrictions. They’re expected to go into effect 17 May. Here’s a snap shot.

(a) IN GENERAL.

7) The operator has passed an aeronautical knowledge and safety test described in subsection (g) and maintains proof of test passage to be made available to the Administrator or law enforcement upon request.

(8) The aircraft is registered and marked in accordance with chapter 441 of this title and proof of registration is made available to the Administrator or a designee of the Administrator or law enforcement upon request.

(g) AERONAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SAFETY TEST.—

(1) IN GENERAL.—Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this section, the Administrator, in consultation with manufacturers of unmanned aircraft systems, other industry stakeholders, and community-based organizations, shall develop an aeronautical knowledge and safety test, which can then be administered electronically by the Administrator, a community-based organization, or a person designated by the Administrator.

(2) REQUIREMENTS.—The Administrator shall ensure the aeronautical knowledge and safety test is designed to adequately demonstrate an operator’s—

(A) understanding of aeronautical safety knowledge; and

(B) knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration regulations and requirements pertaining to the operation of an unmanned aircraft system in the national airspace system.

You need to familiarize yourselves with the changes:

§44809. Exception for limited recreational operations of unmanned aircraft

So, what does all this mean? Don’t fly until you comply.

The Democratic Congress, on the other hand, remains possessed. They are completely consumed by Donald J Trump derangement syndrome. It’s unbelievable folks. If Trump were to announce the cure for Alzheimer a Democrat Congress would want to investigate and impeach the man. These guys, have accused DJT of everything under the sun; all with no evidence. It’s unprecedented in American history !

What the heck is a Woobie?

Over the centuries there have been some amazing military innovations: supersonic aircraft, self-guided missiles, MREs, the USO! But none of these can hold a candle to the greatest invention known to a tired and work worn soldier — their “woobie.” Ask any soldier how they feel about their woobie, and they will get a warm smile on their face and extol the virtues of this cherished bit of equipment. It is perhaps the most-loved item in the armed forces.

The woobie is an all-weather poncho-liner/blanket that consists of two layers of sturdy nylon wrapped around a polyester filling and then quilted. They are designed to trap heat and keep the wet and cold out, but are light enough to pack anywhere and use on warmer nights. Introduced to the army in the 1960s during the Vietnam War when troops needed something to keep them dry and warm in the wet jungles and during cool nights these tie-in poncho liners became a huge hit… and not just for lining ponchos.
