USA Shooting Hires Olympic Sports Executive Bob Gambardella for New Chief Operations Officer Role

Long-time Olympic sports administrator Bob Gambardella has been hired by USA Shooting for the role of Chief Operations Officer. Gambardella will begin his duties with America’s Shooting Team beginning June 3. 

The organization conducted an exhaustive search for the position that included several good candidates.  A seasoned executive, Gambardella was chosen based on his vast knowledge and experience with the U.S. Olympic Committee, Olympic and Paralympic sports management, international diplomacy and high-performance development. His selection was a unanimous decision among USA Shooting leadership and coaching staff.

Gambardella moves to USA Shooting after having served as a senior sports consultant for global advisory firm Burson Cohn and Wolfe for the past two years, helping guide critical high-performance and governance initiatives for India’s Olympic Committee as well as the International Lacrosse Federation.

“Bob brings a wealth of experience, energy and drive and I am excited he is joining our team,” said USA Shooting CEO Keith Enlow.  “Additionally, he is a big fan of our sport, is an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment, loves the outdoors, and has a passion for helping athletes and sports organizations achieve maximum potential.”

“I am thrilled to be joining the USA Shooting staff,” Gambardella states. “It’s great to be part of a team that is focused on taking the organization to the next level. I’m impressed with the amount of passion, coupled with sport expertise, that my colleagues possess. From 2009 to 2016, Gambardella was based overseas as the Chief of the Singapore Sports Institute where he led a staff of 123 and managed a budget of $S73m. Under his leadership, his team achieved breakthrough performances, forged strategic alliances and developed systems for sustained growth and success of athletes, coaches and sport organizations. The most notable accomplishment during that time was helping the Singapore Swimming Association and athlete Joseph Schooling achieve the first-ever gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. At the 2016 Paralympic Games, Singapore earned three medals, including two gold.

Gambardella worked at the United States Olympic Committee from 2000 to 2009 in the areas

of High Performance and International Relations.  During that time, he stepped in as the CEO of USA Taekwondo to help transform their organization in a time of crisis. Bob has travelled to over 50 countries and has worked in various capacities at 10 Olympic Games.

Prior to work at the USOC, Gambardella served as the National Team Director and Director, Junior Athlete Development and High-Performance Programs at USA Volleyball between 1996 and 2000. He spent 13 years as head volleyball coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point where he compiled a 326-166 win/loss record and has an overall coaching record in the sport of 487-202.

Gambardella has earned two masters’ degrees in sport management including with the International Olympic Committee’s MEMOS Program (Executive Masters in Sports Organization Management) back in 2004 where he led a project titled “Analysis of Sport Organizations and the Development of World Class Athletes for Sustained Competitive Excellence.”  He also earned a Master of Arts degree in physical education/sports management from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997.

SIG SAUER 1911 Stainless: A stainless steel frame and slide engraved on the right side with one of the Protector Lions from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall.  The top of the slide is adorned with the memorial badge and rose, and the words “Respect, Honor, Remember,” and the left of the slide is engraved with the quote “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes it is how they lived.”  The NLEOMF 1911 Stainless is a .45 auto, hammer fired pistol, with SIGLITE Night Sights, deeply checkered Blackwood grips, and comes with three 8-round magazines.  $100 from the sale of each pistol will be donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

SIG SAUER P320 Carry: A Nitron coated stainless steel frame and slide engraved with the National Law Enforcement Memorial Logo.  The NLEOMF P320 Carry is a 9mm striker-fired pistol, with a Carry grip module, featuring SIGLITE Night Sights, ambidextrous slide catch lever, and includes three 17-round magazines.  $50 from the sale of each pistol will be donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

SMPP to supply 21,062 Specialty Ballistic Helmets for Airborne Applications to Indian army.

We are pleased to share the news of award of contract by Indian Army to SMPP for a specialized ballistic helmet for Airborne applications. SMPP will be supplying more than 20,000 such helmets. This will be in addition to the 50,000 Helmets already supplied and another 40,000 likely to be supplied by SMPP to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
This new order comes after SMPP started with the first supply of 10,000 Nos. Ballistic Jackets as part of the Rs 640 Crores (approximately USD 100 Million) contract with the Indian Ministry of Defence for supply of over 186,138 Nos.

Twinsburg, Ohio (May 2019) – Steinel Ammunition Co., manufacturers of American-made premium self-defense, hunting, and target ammunition, is pleased to announce their partnership with one of the largest ammunition makers to provide rounds of their most advanced Inceptor® ARX projectiles. Steinel Ammunition is initially producing 45 Colt Lever Action UMI ARX, 450 Bushmaster ARX, and 458 SOCOM ARX for Inceptor. Steinel Ammo’s new facility in Northeastern Ohio, is capable of producing their premium ammo lines, as well as producing rounds for other companies, delivering on their promise of exceptional accuracy and performance.

The ARX projectile is injection molded using a specially blended copper-polymer matrix designed to easily penetrate soft tissue that is also tough on bone and provides excellent knockdown power. The distinctive non-expanding ARX “flute” shape has no hollow-point or sharp edges on the nose, yet retains a stopping power and terminal performance exceeding many traditional expanding handgun bullets. Yet all this power, high velocity, and energy impart a lesser felt recoil which allows for quicker follow-up shots. The ARX projectile is fully frangible on hardened steel targets.

NDIA commends the pending nomination of Patrick Shanahan as the new secretary of defense. We recommend his expeditious confirmation by the Senate and the nomination and confirmation of the key Pentagon billets still filled by officials operating in an acting capacity.
Shanahan brings with him experience as deputy secretary of defense along with his lengthy tenure as an industry leader and visionary. He is uniquely positioned to provide strategic continuity at the department as it implements the National Defense Strategy he helped shepherd with former Defense Secretary Mattis. That strategy, and its focus on great power competition, includes the drive to continue to be at the forefront of technology and advanced capabilities. The Coward Dies a Thousand Deaths, the Valiant, Only Once!

Another week has passed and we look forward to a weekend of rest and relaxation or better yet, some range time. I hope you’ve all had a productive week. Once again, we find a couple of genetic defects shoot up a school in Colorado – just wait until the luminaries legalize magic mushrooms. I’ve seen what that stuff does to someone’s mind. If you think you have problems now just keep legalizing drugs, irrespective of their medicinal value.

I want to take a few moments to honor Kendrick Castillo, a student at STEM School Highlands Ranch, Colorado who courageously and selflessly took action against the shooter and in the process paid with his life. What an example of manhood from a young man with his whole life ahead of him. Kendrick R.I.P.

Our condolences to his mother and father for their tragic loss. Your son’s contribution cannot be overvalued.

A shout out to the student body which had the decency to walk out of an anti-gun vigil scheduled by nothing more than opportunists who thought they would use Kendrick’s tragic death to promote the usual anti-gun agenda. Vote these individuals out of office come election time, perhaps they’ll find something to do with their lives that they’re good at.

What I thought I’d do this week is talk a little about iron sights; more specifically pistol sights. Most manufacturers will tell you that their sights are zeroed for 25 yards. That testing is usually done with the pistol mounted to a custom made pistol rest or using something like the Ransom Rest below.

So, you head to the range to practice defensive shooting, which is done at 5, 7 and 10 yards, only to discover you’re shooting high or low. For most pistols, the front sight post determines your elevation, up and down, and your rear sight is windage, or right and left. If your pistol is shooting low at a given range you need a shorter front sight post. If your pistol is shooting high you need a taller front sight post. Most experience shooters understand this; however, how much shorter or taller?

We’re going to calculate that below.

Let’s say we’re using a Glock 19 with polymer sights. Your sight radius is 6.02 inches. At 15 yards you’re shooting 3 inches low. What is the proper sight height correction to get you on target at 15 yards.

(6.02 x 3)/ 540 (distance to target in inches) = 0.033 inches

So what do you do with this number? Measure your existing sight height and subtract from that value 0.033 inches (you’re subtracting because your shot group is low, so your front sight post needs to be shorter).

Now you know the proper height for your front sight post to achieve your goal.

Parabon® Customers Net 55 Solved Cases in First Year of Snapshot® Genetic Genealogy Service

New DNA technology helps crack cases that otherwise may have never been solved

Reston, Va. (8 May 2019) – With the announcement Tuesday afternoon by Seattle police that DNA testing confirmed Frank Edward Wypych was responsible for the murder and sexual assault of Susan Galvin in 1967, Parabon® NanoLabs closed out a stunningly successful year of crime solving after the introduction of its Snapshot® Genetic Genealogy Service. With three announcements by law enforcement this week[1] of a Parabon lead resulting in a positive DNA identification, the total number of “solves” by Parabon customers in the past year has risen to 55 – an average of more than one case per week.

The Galvin case is notable for several reasons. It is the oldest cold case to be solved by any investigative team using genetic genealogy (51.6 years); it occurred just 60 miles south of Parabon’s first genetic genealogy case to result in an arrest, that of William Earl Talbott for the murder of Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg in Snohomish County, Washington; and it required the use of two additional Parabon proprietary autosomal DNA technologies: mixture deconvolution and high-resolution ancestry determination – a pair of advanced capabilities not offered by any other lab at this time.

The 51-year-old DNA sample was degraded and contained a large fraction of DNA from the victim, which had to be algorithmically removed before other DNA analysis could be performed. Dr. Ellen Greytak, who led the development of Parabon’s Snapshot technology, explains, “In our years of experience working with challenging forensic DNA samples, we have developed innovative capabilities that allow us to succeed on samples where others may fail. Particularly for cases involving sexual assault, our ability to computationally isolate the genome-wide genotypes of a suspect, unique in the industry, is indispensable.”

Parabon’s ancestry prediction was also key in the Galvin investigation. As Greytak explained, “Accurate, fine-grained ancestry analysis, able to accommodate both recent and historical admixture, is critical for investigation alongside trait prediction from DNA.” For the Galvin case, Parabon predicted the unknown DNA sample left at the crime scene was from someone with 16 percent Native American ancestry, which turned out to be important during the genetic genealogy investigation that lead to Wypych. From a large set of potential ancestors of the DNA source, CeCe Moore, Chief Genetic Genealogist at Parabon, was able to narrow her search by identifying a branch of the family tree with the precise amount of Native American ancestry to account for that observed in the crime scene sample. “Without these types of ancestry clues,” Moore stated, “many of our investigations would take months instead of weeks.”

Armed with such tools, Moore and her team of genetic genealogists at Parabon have helped investigators across the country solve a wide array of cases in the past year, ranging from the very cold (eight over 40 years cold) to quite recent (arrest made four months after the crime), and which, on average, had been unsolved for 23.9 years (over 1,200 years in total). The research for many of the cases was extraordinarily difficult, involving distant relationship matches, adoption, misattributed parentage, and/or pedigree collapse, any of which can stall a genetic genealogy investigation.

Moore attributes the team’s success to their extensive past experience in solving unknown parentage cases and to the collaborations they have formed with law enforcement in the past year. “It’s definitely a team effort. Often, detectives just need a single additional clue and genetic genealogy enables us to provide it,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling when we learn our efforts have helped an agency reach a concrete identification that closes a case.”

[1] Earlier Tuesday, police in Fayetteville, NC, credited Parabon for its genetic genealogy assistance, which led to the arrest of Johnnie B Green, Jr., who is accused of nine rapes during the period from Jun 2009 – Dec 2010. Police in Terre Haute, Indiana, announced Monday that reverse paternity testing confirmed Jeffrey Lynn Hand was responsible for the murder of Pamela Milam in September 1972.

Compete in the Steyr Challenge for the Title “Toughest Hunters in the Alps”

BESSEMER, Ala. (May 7, 2019) — Steyr Arms will be hosting the 2nd Annual Steyr Challenge, Oct. 5 inSeetaler Alpe in Austria, with teams from across the globe competing for the  title of “Toughest Hunters in the Alps.”This competition is a combination of a more than seven kilometer mountain run with about 300 meters of elevation gain, different shooting disciplines, abseiling and sawing. Each four-person team, with one alternate, will need to train together, shoot together and strive for the ultimate goal of winning together.

Steyr Arms is looking for a few good teams to represent the U.S. in this year’s competition. If you think you have a team that has what it takes to take on the course and the other competitors, send an audition video of your team explaining why you wish to compete in the challenge before the registration closes on July 15. Click here to register.There is no cost to submit. The $250 registration fee is only charged to teams that are selected and will be participating in the challenge. Teams will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Austria. Lodging and food are covered upon arrival.

Bald Knob, AR – Choate Machine and Tool, a leading designer, manufacturer and OEM supplier of rifle stocks, shotgun magazine extensions and firearms accessories, has introduced the Night Manager, a shotgun magazine tube extension with an integral light and accessory mounting system.   Night Manager boosts capacity by two extra shotshells and has an indexable Picatinny rail section to add a light or laser as needed.  Test samples are available for qualified media.

The Night Manager is an all steel construction magazine tube extension with an aluminum shroud that is drilled and tapped along the bottom and sides for mounting Picatinny rail sections. Its unique design allows the shroud to rotate to orient the attached Picatinny rails where needed and then uses an AR-15 castle nut to lock it down in the desired location. By mounting accessories on the magazine tube extension it allows use of the full length of the shotgun’s forend, which often can be short on law enforcement models.

Currently the Night Manager is available for the Remington 870, 1100, 11-87 and also for the H&R Pardner pumps and Hawk 982. For Mossberg shotguns the Night Manager is available for the 590, 835, 930 5500 and the 9200 shotguns.

Telescoping Pole and Rotating Head Now Extend 84 Inches for Improved Visibility

EAGLEVILLE, PA, May 6, 2019 – Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting tools, introduced the Portable Scene Light EXT, a taller model of its Portable Scene Light, featuring a pole and rotating head that extend a full 84 inches high. With its extra foot of height and its 5,300-lumen output, the rechargeable high lumen light allows for complete scene light coverage from an extended height, improving worker visibility on the job.

Completely portable and featuring a narrow footprint, the Portable Scene Light EXT can be used almost anywhere by first responders and other professionals, from wide, open places to tight, confined work areas. Like the original Portable Scene Light (extends 72 inches), it features a 90 degree swivel neck, enabling users to aim the light beam precisely where it is needed for task lighting purposes, and can be fully deployed in less than 30 seconds. With stabilizing legs that provide balance on uneven surfaces or in windy conditions, the light also packs to a compact size for easy storage.

“The Portable Scene Light EXT offers the same extraordinary high lumen flood light and other features as the original version, but also provides an extended, 84-inch telescoping pole,” said Streamlight Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Michael F. Dineen. “The extra tall light keeps a scene lit up from above so that first responders, utility workers, military personnel and other users can perform their jobs without light shining at eye level, possibly obscuring their vision.”  

The Portable Scene Light EXT uses six power LEDs and wide-pattern parabolic reflectors for a smooth flood pattern. It offers three levels of light intensity, ranging from a super-bright flood beam to a low setting with ultra-long run times that permit the light to be used throughout an entire work shift without having to recharge the battery.

On the high setting, the light delivers an incredibly bright 5,300 lumens, 42,000 candela and a four-hour run time, over a beam distance of 410 meters. On medium, it provides 2,500 lumens, nine hours of run time and a beam distance of 292 meters. On low, the light runs for 18 hours and offers 1,300 lumens, and a beam distance of 215 meters. A selectable diffuser permits users to choose between the two beam widths, which are available with all three lighting modes.

The Portable Scene Light EXT is powered by a zero-maintenance 12 volt, 14.4 Ah sealed lead acid battery that is rechargeable up to 500 times. The light can be charged to 90 percent of its capacity in 10 hours. Red and green LEDs provide charge status feedback and the light’s low battery indicator light detects when the battery is running low. The light also will run indefinitely from an external 12V DC or AC power source. A toggle switch allows users to switch between the battery and power source modes of operation.  

Constructed from high-impact thermoplastic housing, the Portable Scene Light EXT offers weatherproof construction. It features an IP67-rated design for dust-tight and waterproof operation to one meter for 30 minutes.  The light also is engineered to resist 40 MPH winds continuous in all directions with its head fully extended.

In the retracted position, the Portable Scene Light EXT measures 25.5 inches long, 11 inches high, and 6.5 inches wide. It weighs 25.5 pounds with included batteries.

Available in international safety yellow, the Portable Scene Light EXT comes with a heavy duty shoulder carrying strap, AC charger, 12V DC cord and Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. It has an MSRP of $1,354.13.

GLOCK Debuts New Pistol, New Spokesperson & New Designer Experience at NRA Annual Meetings 2019

SMYRNA, Ga. – May 6, 2019 The 2019 NRA Annual meeting wrapped on April 28 with 81,283 total attendees and over 800 exhibitors. Many from the firearms industry were in attendance, including GLOCK, Inc., one of the leading innovators and manufacturers of pistols and firearms gear.

The Company debuted its newest pistol at the show — the GLOCK 45 MOS — which meets growing market demand for an easy way to mount popular optics without expensive slide alterations.

Lines to meet him wrapped around the exhibit hall, rivaling those to see the President, who was also in attendance.
