Galco’s Association With Rambo Movie Franchise Continues With Rambo: Last Blood

Galco Gunleather has been known for five decades as America’s premier maker of best-quality handgun holsters. What’s lesser known is Galco’s long association with the knife sheaths from Sylvester Stallone’sRambo movie franchise, an association that continues this year with the release of Rambo: Last Blood and the selection of Pohl Force as the knifemaker for the final installment of the series.

Galco’s history with Rambo began in 1985. Knifemaker and Cutlery Hall of Fame® member Jimmy Lile, a longtime Galco holster user, was selected to make the knife in Rambo: First Blood Part II. Unsatisfied with the quality of sheaths made by other companies, Lile came to Galco. Lile’s knife and a Galco sheath were both featured in the second Rambo film, and Galco partnered with Lile Knives to manufacture thousands of OEM sheaths for twelve different knife models.

This year, Galco is extremely pleased to partner with Pohl Force to produce leather sheaths for the two new knives that appear in this year’s Rambo: Last Blood, the Pohl MK-8 and MK-9. Galco met with Pohl Force founder Dietmar Pohl at SHOT Show 2019. As with Jimmy Lile in the 1980s, Galco is honored that Dietmar recognized Galco’s quality and workmanship, and we’re very proud to produce sheaths for Pohl Force’s finest-quality blades!

Knives and sheaths may be purchased at Pohl Force.

M300 Series Combines Thermal and High-Definition Visible Imaging to Offer Professional Mariners, First Responders and Recreational Boaters Increased Situational Awareness and Safer Navigation

ARLINGTON, Va. FLIR M300 Series cameras are designed for the most demanding professional mariners and first responders who operate in the harshest marine environments.

The successor to FLIR’s industry-leading M-Series of maritime cameras, the next generation M300 Series consists of five models featuring rugged and robust new pan and tilt housings – four models with the FLIR BosonTM 640 or 320 resolution thermal camera cores and various fixed field of view (FoV) lenses, plus a visible-only model, the M300C, featuring a high-definition, color, low-light camera with 30X zoom.

Living with Your HK VP9 Paddle

20190923_083242

HK devotees and other shooters looking for an exceptional polymer frame striker fired pistol celebrated the arrival of HK’s VP9 in June of 2014. I first had hands on at Shot Show 2015 in Las Vegas. Made in Germany, this pistol is through and true EU in its design, right down to the paddle style magazine release. It took HK about 5 years to recognize that the U.S. market doesn’t paddle, American shooters like their pushbutton magazine release. Why?

Using myself as typical, I use a large glove size, so I’ll describe my hand size as average to medium; even with a small backstrap installed on the VP9’s highly configurable grip, I could not reach the paddle with my shooting hand thumb or index finger. Using a paddle meant having to break my grip whether I used my thumb or index finger, but breaking your grip is a no-go that reduces speed, accuracy and compromises weapon retention. Apparently, I was not the only consumer facing those issues because in 2019 HK snapped out of it and introduced the HK VP9-B (B for button) to the U.S. market. Shazam, problem solved, and VP9-B sales went through the roof.

20190923_090653

So, how do you live with your VP9 paddle? Do what you currently do when you’re being annoyed, give it the finger. Your shooting hand’s middle finger does much more than express a sentiment.

Using your middle finger to actuate the paddle preserves your grip, your magazine change speed and shooting accuracy. But keep in mind that old habits die hard so you’ll want to practice the technique and internalize it. Having done that, I guarantee that you’ll be doing magazine changes smoother and generally slicker than cat poop on linoleum. – SP

NEWINGTON, N.H., (September 20, 2019) – In observance of POW-MIA Recognition Day, SIG SAUER, Inc. is honored to announce the production and presentation of a commemorative 1911 pistol to Major Jose Anzaldua, USMC (Ret.), and the release of a short documentary, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine: The Story of Major Jose Anzaldua.”

Major Jose Anzaldua, USMC (Ret.) volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam War, and served until his retirement in 1992 after 24-years of service. On January 23, 1970, Corporal Anzaldua was taken prisoner of war and imprisoned for 1,160 days in a jungle POW camp, as well as prisons in North Vietnam including the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.” He was eventually released on March 7, 1974 during Operation Homecoming.

The unique distinguishing features of the commemorative 1911 pistols crafted by SIG Custom Works are:

1911 Pistol: the 1911 pistol was carried by U.S. forces throughout the Vietnam War, and by Major Anzaldua throughout his service. The commemorative 1911 POW pistol features a high-polish DLC finish on both the frame and slide, and is chambered in.45 AUTO with an SAO trigger. All pistol engravings are done in 24k gold;

Right Slide Engraving: the Prisoner of War ribbon inset, with USMC Eagle Globe and Anchor and “Major Jose Anzaldua” engravings;

Top Slide Engraving: engraved oak leaf insignia representing the Major’s rank at the time of retirement and a pair of dog tags inscribed with the date, latitude and longitude of the location where Major Anzaldua was taken as a prisoner, and the phrase “You Are Not Forgotten” taken from the POW-MIA flag;

Left Side Engraving: the Vietnam War service ribbon inset, with USMC Eagle Globe and Anchor engraving;

Pistol Grips: anodized aluminum grips with POW-MIA flag.

A holster was provided by DeSantis Holsters as part of the presentation that is a replica of the holsters used by U.S. Forces during the Vietnam War inscribed for Major Anzaldua.

Additionally, SIG SAUER is honored to release the video feature, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine: The Story of Major Jose Anzaldua,” to honor Major Anzaldua’s service to our country. This documentary chronicles Major Anzaldua’s time in captivity as a prisoner of war, features the 1911 commemorative pistol, and interviews with Major Jose Anzaldua, Ron Cohen, President and CEO, SIG SAUER, Inc., Tim Butler of SIG Custom Works, and members of the Anzaldua family.

On National POW-MIA Day on September 20th, and every day, we honor those whom have served and sacrificed for the United States of America in the defense of freedom.

The commemorative 1911 pistol was previously presented to Major Jose Anzaldua in a private ceremony at SIG SAUER Headquarters in Newington, New Hampshire by Cohen and Butler.

The 458 SOCOM; From Battlefield to Elk Country

When Steinel Ammunition started out, they bet their future on the 458 SOCOM cartridge and now offer 4 different loads for the big game hunter.

Twinsburg, Ohio (September 2019) – With hunting season underway across the country, an increasing number of AR-15 platforms are being used in the field. Modular, accurate and durable are attributes that make the AR-15 platform or Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) such a popular choice. In fact, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) estimates approximately 5 to 10 million MSRs are owned by responsible citizens. The platform, initially developed by Armalite in the 1950’s as a military-style rifle, has become increasingly popular with civilians for home defense, varmint hunting and more recently big game hunting.

While the original .223 cartridge was effective for small game and varmints, deer hunters found the cartridge lacking in knock-down power. The pursuit was on for a reliable projectile that could take larger game ethically and fit and feed the MSR platform consistently. A slew of larger calibers from 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 Remington, 300 AAC Blackout to name a few, became standard offerings. Hunters found these calibers were effective against mid-sized large game such as deer, hogs and black bear. Bone crusher calibers would quickly follow providing high country hunters with the power to knock down large American game such as elk, moose and brown bear. But one of these calibers did not get its start as a hunting caliber, at least of the four-legged variety.

The legend of the founding of the 458 SOCOM round does not begin in a large ammo company’s R&D, but at a barbeque. The Battle of Mogadishu was the tipping point during a two-day battle between US Forces and Somali militiamen under Mohamed Farrah Aidid, the self-proclaimed president-to-be. The US Forces were comprised of the elite special forces from the US Army Special Operations Command, Air Force Special Operations Command and the US Naval Special Warfare Command, collaborating as Task Force Ranger. The goal was to capture two of Aidid’s top lieutenants and the time frame for the mission was estimated to be about an hour and ended up lasting overnight and well into the next day with 18 elite American troops killed. The 2001 Ridley Scott movie Black Hawk Down, a film based on the novel by Mark Bowden about the 1993 raid in Mogadishu, brought home the enormity and horror of modern warfare to the American public. One of the many issues our US Forces commanders realized was that the current military round, the 5.56×45 cartridge, did not have effective stopping power on enemy troops, especially enemy troops hopped up on the local drug Khat, an herbal stimulant that causes loss of appetite, excitement and the inability to feel and register pain.

Back to that barbeque. Marty ter Weeme, founder of Teppo Jutsu, a small, custom ammunition design and firearms company in Texas, was chatting with a senior member of the US special operations community while have a few beers and some good down-home Texas BBQ. Marty set forth from that stuff-of-legends meeting to develop the 458 SOCOM based upon the Special Operations Command requirements. The 458 SOCOM cartridge was required to fit the M4 carbine and fire at subsonic velocities using suppressors. Marty developed the cartridge and Tony Rumore of Tromix built the first 458 SOCOM rifle in 2001.

Less than 20 years later, a new ammunition design and manufacturing company, founded by Andy Steinel, was making the gun show rounds selling his unique MILSurp, big bore and hard-to-find calibers. A contact made at a local gun show in Ohio led the fledgling Steinel Ammunition Company to its first  distributor, specifically of this military-style round.

But the 458 SOCOM would find its place far from the battlefield as a preferred large game caliber that hits hard and ethically drops bigger game at short to mid ranges. Steinel Ammunition was on the forefront of bringing quality ammunition in this new caliber to the hunting community. Initially, hunters who had been intrigued and enthusiastic about this round, found it scarce in the marketplace, and if found, expensive. The 458 SOCOM was a hand loaded specialty- that is until Steinel Ammunition began offering accurate loads with a 300gr JHP and a 325gr FTX in 2016 and at prices that made hand loading much less beneficial.

“Our SOCOM customers come back for our accurate, reliable rounds that feature great bullets, across multiple hunting applications,” Andy Steinel, president of Steinel Ammunition said. “The 300 grain JHP works for most everyone, but for those that prefer exceptional accuracy we offer the 325 grain FTX, and for those who demand unmatched penetration we have our 325-grain solid brass RNFP. For those looking for optimal expansion, we offer a 250 grain Solid Copper Hollow Point (SCHP). Even though we currently offer 4 different loads, we are still expanding our 458 SOCOM offerings to meet the discerning broad needs of our customers. We are currently looking at some of the bullet technologies offered by Lehigh Defense.”

“Researching the origin of the 458-ammo inspired me to build the rifle,” T_Gun’s review states. “I tried numerous brands of ammo. The quality, price and service from Steinel Ammo stands out so much that I had to build a matching pistol. The ammo runs flawless through both firearms. No doubt the best 458 SOCOM ammo on the market!”

Whitetail hunters prefer the 300 gr. JHP because of its consistency round after round. One of Steinel’s converts previously found that using traditional hunting rounds such as .30-06 or .308 left him tracking wounded deer since the round would not fully expand and pass right through the deer. His son talked him into using 458 SOCOM in an AR platform and after finding out about Steinel’s 458 SOCOM 300 gr. JHP, he was shooting 3-round groups at sub-MOA at 100 yards. He took a 175 lbs. deer with a non-typical rack at under 110 yards and “the shock power of the round knocked down the deer and it did not suffer.”

For hunters who prefer the MSR platform and want a bone crushing projectile that takes game quickly and effectively at short to mid-ranges, the 458 SOCOM is a preferred caliber. Since the round fits in standard 5.56 magazines, it makes for an easy transition moving from one species to another in the same platform. While not legal in states requiring straight-wall only cartridges, the 458 SOCOM offers the advantage of a hard-hitting 45 caliber rifle in the AR-15 platform.

T_Gun’s 458 SOCOM builds with XCaliber Ammo boxes. XCaliber became Steinel Ammunition in 2018.

AirMap, Wing, and Other USS Unveil ASTM Network Remote ID Readiness in Live Demonstrations in the US and Switzerland

In the last few days, AirMap and other companies across the drone industry successfully demonstrated an implementation of the ASTM Remote ID and Tracking standard to support the remote identification of drones by law enforcement and citizens in the United States and Switzerland.

The ASTM Remote ID and Tracking standard provides a flexible and scalable way to remotely identify drones while protecting operator privacy. The standard proposes a Discovery and Synchronization Service (DSS), which enables UAS Service Suppliers (USS) to exchange safety-critical information while protecting operator privacy.

To support the demonstrations, AirMap successfully deployed all core components of the ASTM remote ID standard implementation, including a DSS node, a Remote ID Service and Display Provider Service, and an AR-powered Remote ID Display functionality to participating observers using the AirMap for Drones mobile application.
Remote ID is essential to the advancement of the drone industry because it allows for safety, accountability, and transparency for all stakeholders. These demonstrations showed that ASTM network remote ID works and is available today to the drone industry with minimal government infrastructure investment. AirMap is proud to be a contributor in operationalizing the remote ID standard globally.

BETO Cometh!

It’s Friday and time to look forward to our weekend. Weather is cooling down, not a cloud in the sky so I’m thinking range time. Our friends in Houston are dealing with some weather but things don’t look that bad for them. It’s also time for our weekly shoot the shit!

A shoot the shit is an event that separates participants from smart (?) devices, social media and therapists, who as we all know are jackasses that studied psychology so they could understand themselves. This week has been unbelievable!

giphy (1)

BETO O’Rourke, who by now has convinced me that he should have been a poster boy for the “Pro Choice Movement,” wants to come confiscate your AR-15 and AK-47. Calling him a moron is a disservice to persons with a genetic predisposition to benightedness. BETO has no platform nor any idea of what the country or his party needs to succeed. So, like a chimp looking for attention he jumps on the gun confiscation bandwagon, but how does the industry respond? By giving him increasing attention, go figure!

I want to leave the gun issue and transition into a topic that is just as important if not more so. We live in times where labels like racist, misogynist and xenophobic get thrown around casually with no supporting evidence. We have people in this country that accept a racist label as being factual without ever asking the labeler for specific details. The objective behind this modus operandi is to leverage audience gullibility into thinking that they’re being oppressed. Those individuals have one objective and that is to keep men, women, ethnic groups and nationalities from coming together as friends and countrymen. It is classic Leninist methodology. One recent victim of that approach is Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister.

Apparently, sometime in 2001, the Prime Minister attended an Arabian Knights party, and dressed in costume to fit the party’s motif. In case you’ve never read the tales of the Arabia Knights you should as it’s classic literature.

Image result for Trudeau Arabian Knights

But, holly shit batman! He darkened his face, which somehow gets turned into “are you a racist Mr. Prime Minister.” I don’t follow the Prime Minister or support his political ideology; i.e., I don’t have a horse in this race, but what deeply concerns me is the insidious nature of this attack. Candidly, you have to be an imbecil to be offended by Mr. Trudeau’s choice of costume; in fact, I’ll go as far as to say that if you are offended by this, stop going to a therapist and have a weekly shoot the shit, it’ll help you get your head straight.

dbohp20-20f2d03d-87b0-4403-8a37-053fedbf0cd1

Disney’s interpretation of the Arabian Knights

Take this seriously readers! If this continuous, were you to show up at a Halloween party dressed as an Algonquin you can forget any political aspiration, business or theater career. If you choose a Davy Crockett costume then you must be an anti native-American racist, but since Davy was at the Alamo you must also hate Mexicans and are therefor a xenophobic.

It’s going to take all of us to change this and to expose it for what it is, propaganda designed to divide and create dependencies. I remember what was done in Cuba…

Castro’s militia walked into the classroom and had children close their eyes. They were then told to ask God for ice cream. When none appeared, they repeated the process but this time had the children ask Fidel Castro for ice cream; while their eyes were closed, Castro’s activists passed out ice cream cups. Objective? Have the kids depend on Castro not God.

Alright, remember that a shoot the shit is a social interaction in which participants don’t need to know anything about the subject being discussed, they are free to make any unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether.

Have a great weekend. Be safe and spend some quality time with you friends and family but do take what I’ve said seriously because it’s happening at an increasing rate and being amplified through social media.

The Wraith 1911 From Dan Wesson

Suppressor-Ready, Sharp-Looking and Available in Three Calibers

Kansas City, KS (September 16, 2019) – CZ-USA and Dan Wesson add to the company’s suppressor-ready pistols with the DW Wraith, featuring a 5.75-inch, factory-threaded barrel. The Wraith features High Night Sights to accommodate a suppressor, as a suppressor usually blocks out some or all of the standard 1911 sights.

A full-sized 1911, the DW Wraith is available in 45 ACP, 10MM, and 9MM Luger. The frame and slide on the DW Wraith are made of heavy-duty, forged stainless steel, and are coated in Dan Wesson’s distressed version of the gun maker’s Duty finish. Non-distressed parts are finished in black.

The DW Wraith’s G10 grips feature an edgy and very functional stippling. The extended grip and thumb safeties make the DW Wraith easy to use even with gloved hands. For added support, sharp, 25 lines-per-inch checkering is found on the front strap and mainspring housing. The Wraith’s undercut trigger guard provides a higher grip for better handling and stability.

The Wraith’s ejection post is lowered and flared for better ejection of spent brass. Forward slide serrations provide a nice texture for racking back the slide. The beveled magwell means easier and faster magazine changes.

All DW Wraith’s come with a thread protector, and ships with two (2) magazines, a Signature Series pistol case, a barrel bushing wrench, one (1) cable lock, and an owner’s manual.

NEW BAG RIDER FOR RUGER PRECISION RIFLES

Beaverton, OR – Catalyst Arms, LLC, a firearms accessory company, has introduced the Apex Bag Rider for the rear stock of the Ruger Precision Rifle.  Now RPR shooters can improve shooting position stability and make rapid elevation aiming adjustments.  The Apex is wider than the factory bottom Picatinny rail, providing better support on bags, packs or even the support hand to help remain steady while taking a shot.  To help get on target the Apex Bag Rider’s angled shape allows for generous amount of rapid elevation adjustment.  Simply slide your rear support bag forward or backward to raise or lower the butt stock.  This lets the stock rest on the bag rather than relying on uneven applied grip pressure to maintain the desired shooting position.
The Apex bag rider is the latest in true RPR performance upgrades from Catalyst Arms including their Mag Release Extension, Hammerhead Bolt Knob and Fast Track arca rail handguard.

The Apex fits short action and magnum action Ruger Precision Rifles.  It slides over the factory bottom Picatinny rail and is locked down with a single screw without any modification or disassembly of the rifle. Designed specifically for the Ruger Precision Rifle stock it is lightweight and snag resistant.   The new Catalyst Arms Apex Bag Rider is now available, is made from Nylon 11, available in matte black and has an MSRP of $44.95. For information on the Apex bag rider and other RPR performance upgrades go to www.catalystarms.com

Introducing The New StukOn-U Pocket Holster For Subcompact Autos

Galco Gunleather is excited to introduce additional StukOn-U™ pocket holster fits for subcompact autos from Colt, Kahr, Kel-Tec, Kimber, Ruger, S&W, Taurus and others!

The StukOn-U builds on Galco’s decades of experience with pocket holsters. Its Gripper Shell™ exterior helps the holster grab the inside of the pocket, while the closed-cell foam substrate gives the holster shape and sturdiness. Finally, a layer of 420 denier packcloth lines the holster to both protect the handgun and smooth the draw.

The ambidextrous StukOn-U is designed for front pocket carry in pants or a jacket. It keeps the firearm in the same general position so the grip can be quickly located during draw, conceals the shape of the gun so that its outline is not printed through the pants, and allows one-handed release of gun from both pocket and holster, especially when using a “hooking” draw technique to catch the trigger-guard edge of the holster on the pocket as the handgun is released. The holster’s Gripper Shell surface assists in keeping the holster in the pocket during the draw.

The StukOn-U helps accomplish multiple concealed carry tasks with excellent discretion – and at the very reasonable retail price of $27!

Galco International, LTD is the designer and manufacturer of the Galco Gunleather brand, the premier American-made line of superb-quality holsters, belts and accessories. Encompassing law enforcement, military, defensive and sporting use, the Galco Gunleather brand utilizes leather, injection-molded plastic and Kydex® to meet the demands of today’s consumers. The award-winning Matrix™ line of holsters and accessories, women’s holster handbags, tactical slings and hunting accessories round out the line. All Galco products are proudly made in the USA since 1969.

ArachniGRIP Offers Slide Spider with Betsy Ross Flag Emblem

(Parker, CO) – ArachniGRIP®, creator and manufacturer of the innovative Slide Spider® adhesive slide grip, is now offering a slide grip with the image of the Betsy Ross flag.
There has recently been some controversy regarding the “Betsy Ross” American flag. Despite the misinformation, the fact is that the first flag of the United States was about unity. George Washington knew that the American people and his army needed a flag to represent this change from an English ruled government to one based on our independence. When Congress officially approved the issuance of this flag on June 14, 1777, they emphasized the new flag’s symbolism of the unity of the thirteen new states, a reminder to the world that we were no longer the thirteen English colonies.
ArachniGRIP offers many flag designs in its custom shop, including a representation of the Original 13 States flag sewn by Betsy Ross. To order this design or any other custom design, go to

www.arachnigrip.com, select the “Custom Shop” option and place your order. Most custom designs are only a $5.00 upcharge to the regular MSRP of $19.95.
The Slide Spider grip by ArachniGRIP is available for most semi auto pistols. It is easy to install and extremely durable. The Slide Spider grip products enable the shooter to gain increased control through a safe and secure hold. The products offer additional tactical advantages under challenging operating conditions, including extreme moisture and temperature. In addition, these products aid shooters with weak or weakened hand strength and those with medical conditions such as arthritis.
For more information about ArachniGRIP products, visit www.arachnigrip.com.

About ArachniGRIP®:
ArachniGRIP® was founded by two lifelong firearms enthusiasts. We are located in Parker, Colorado, at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Our company believes that all shooters should have the advantages of proper equipment and training. Our products and instructional videos are designed to aid shooters in the safe, practical use and control of their firearms.

HAWK30 Takes Flight – AeroVironment Achieves Successful First Test Flight of Next Generation Solar HAPS Unmanned Aircraft System

  • Successful first test flight takes place less than two years after program start
  • Test program to expand operating envelope with sequentially higher and longer flights

SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 16, 2019 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVAV), a global leader in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for both defense and commercial applications, announced the successful first flight of the HAWK30 solar HAPS unmanned aircraft system on September 11, 2019 at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in California.  AeroVironment partnered with SoftBank Corp (TOKYO:9434) to create HAPSMobile Inc., the joint venture funding HAWK30 design development and demonstration.

“The first flight of HAWK30 builds on more than two decades of pioneering HAPS technology development and demonstration by the AeroVironment team, and comes only two years since SoftBank joined us in this endeavor,” said Wahid Nawabi, AeroVironment president and chief executive officer.  “We are the pioneer and leader in HAPS, delivering continued progress and demonstrated success.  We look forward to achieving even greater success in flight testing, culminating in high-altitude, long-endurance flight demonstrations that will pave the way for the global commercialization of HAPS technology.”

“We are grateful for the expertise and support from NASA’s outstanding team at the Armstrong Flight Research Center.  We are proud to add another milestone to their storied history of aviation innovation,” Nawabi added.

Developed and assembled in AeroVironment’s HAPS Innovation Center, the HAWK30 has a wingspan of approximately 260 feet and is propelled by 10 electric motors powered by solar panels covering the surface of the wing, resulting in zero emissions. Flying at an altitude of approximately 65,000 feet above sea level and above the clouds, the HAWK30 is designed for continuous, extended missions of up to months without landing.

AeroVironment seeks to create value from its unique HAPS intellectual property and capabilities in multiple ways: participating in the anticipated growth of the HAPSMobile joint venture as one of its two owners; generating customer-funded research and development revenue as the exclusive developer of solar HAPS for HAPSMobile through the design, development and demonstration phases of the program; manufacturing and supplying HAPS UAS to HAPSMobile; supporting and maintaining a deployed fleet of HAPS systems; and marketing and selling HAPS UAS to non-commercial customers globally, with the exception of Japan.

AeroVironment pioneered the concept of high-altitude solar-powered UAS in the 1980s, and developed and demonstrated multiple systems for NASA’s Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology, or ERAST program, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In August 2001, the AeroVironment Helios prototype reached an altitude of 96,863 feet, setting the world-record for sustained horizontal flight by a winged aircraft. In 2002, the AeroVironment Pathfinder Plus prototype performed the world’s first UAS telecommunications demonstrations at 65,000 feet by providing high-definition television (HDTV) signals, third-generation (3G) mobile voice, video and data and high-speed internet connectivity.

About AeroVironment, Inc.

AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) provides customers with more actionable intelligence so they can proceed with certainty. Based in California, AeroVironment is a global leader in unmanned aircraft systems and tactical missile systems, and serves defense, government, and commercial customers. Barrett 4075 upgrades Jorge Chavez International Airport

Perth, Western Australia, 17 September 2019 – Barrett’s High Power High Frequency (HF) systems are upgrading communications at Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport. Since 2001, Lima Airport Partners S.R.L (LAP) along with the Peruvian CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), have undertaken an extensive modernization and infrastructure expansion of the Jorge Chavez International Airport, located in the Nation’s capital Lima, Peru. Barrett Communications have been a critical component of the modernisation of the airport’s communications infrastructure.
Barrett 4075 High power HF transmitters and receivers have been integrated into the complex communications infrastructure system. The installations are fully redundant internet protocol (IP) based split sites (separate transmit and receive sites).
Mr John Eschenfelder, General Manager Barrett USA commented “The Barrett 4075 was chosen for its unique liquid cooled design and modern interface. The liquid cooled design accommodates high duty cycle operation. Along with the industry leading duty cycle capabilities, the modern smart device-based interface, inbuilt ARINC based SELCALL and FCCp87 certification make the 4075 the most reliable, cost effective and advanced high power systems available in the market.”
HF communications are used by airports to communicate with aircraft in transoceanic flights as well as communications over distances beyond line of sight. Additional uses of HF system for airports include secure reliable communications of voice and data between other airports and first responders during emergencies. HF communication is the most reliable form of communication when typical infrastructure is compromised and continues to be used by many government organizations globally as the system of choice when all other systems have failed.
In August 2019, Barrett Communications received FCC approval for the 4075 under rule part 87 – Aviation. FCC approvals are recognized by the United States and many other organizations globally, such as ICAO and civil aviation organizations, it is also used by many countries as part of their homologation process.
Barrett Communications will be exhibiting at the ICAO Innovation Fair in Montreal Canada in September 2019. Barrett will have the 4050 HF SDR and 4075 High power systems available at their stand 33 on the 4th Floor.

SIG SAUER Electro-Optics Partners with Mission Crossbows

SIG SAUER Electro-Optics Partners with Mission Crossbows Revolutionary Ballistic Data Xchange (BDX) System Now for Crossbows

NEWINGTON, N.H., (September 16, 2019) – SIG SAUER Electro-Optics is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Mission Crossbows to bring the revolutionary Ballistic Data Xchange (BDX) Optics System to Crossbow Hunters and Shooters with the addition of the compact SIERRA3BDX 2.5-8x32mm riflescope to the BDX line of riflescopes.  Now, all SIERRA3BDX series riflescopes have crossbow capabilities, however, the SIERRA3BDX 2.5-8x32mm ultralight riflescope is the perfect size, weight and magnification range for crossbow configurations, making it possible to reach out well beyond 100 yards, and engage targets with extreme precision.

SIG SAUER Electro-Optics Partners with Mission Crossbows Revolutionary Ballistic Data Xchange (BDX) System Now for Crossbows

The SIG SAUER Electro-Optics BDX System combines traditional hunting equipment with technology. BDX is a fully integrated rangefinder and riflescope system that utilizes Applied Ballistics Ultralight and Bluetooth™.  The free SIG BDX app for Android and iOS systems allows for Crossbow ballistic profiles to be established.  These profiles are then communicated via Bluetooth™ to any SIG SAUER KILO BDX rangefinder.  When targets are ranged, the Crossbow ballistics are combined with distance to target, slope, temperature, and pressure to precisely calculate the shooting solution.  This solution is displayed in the rangefinder and is also shared instantly with any SIERRA3BDX riflescope, instantly illuminating the exact holdover dot on the reticle in the riflescope. BDX™ is simple, fast, and intuitive – just connect the dot.

“This is an exciting addition to the BDX line that expands the capabilities of the system by introducing the revolutionary technology of the Ballistic Data Xchange system to crossbow hunters,” said Andy York, President, SIG SAUER Electro-Optics.  “Additionally, through this partnership with Mission Crossbows we were able to expand the functionality of the BDX app to allow for setup and ballistic calculations for various crossbow bolt weight and speed levels, with Crossbow-specific ballistic calculations. This would not have been possible without the knowledge and extensive research and development from the product experts at Mission Crossbows.”

Mission Crossbows is a premium archery company that’s redefining the crossbow experience through modern design to optimize performance.  Mission Crossbows are American made and designed, engineered, and manufactured from start to finish in their quality controlled facility in Sparta, Wisconsin.

Closing the Range Gap

For years, NATO artillery and missile systems have been at a range disadvantage compared to its future potential adversaries. New ramjet technology, however, has the potential to completely reverse the situation by closing the range gap.

In the summer of 2016, Russia rolled out the latest version of the 9A52-4 Tornado rocket launcher. The “S”-variant now has the ability to fire shells at an enemy 120 kilometers away, a remarkable improvement on the previous version. But even the previous version could reach targets 70 km away.

At the same time, the country appears to be investing in other, more untraditional long-range missile systems. The recent accident near Severodvinsk – in what appears to have been a test of a new nuclear powered cruise missile – is just one indication of this investment, as is the use of conventional cruise missiles in Syria.

NATO has favored a different approach: For decades, the alliance relied on air superiority. That situation is however changing rapidly. As air defense systems like the S-400 proliferate, Russian planners apparently hope to deny their opponents free use of the skies.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General Mark Milley, is one of many experts who now believe the situation has changed fundamentally – and put NATO forces at a disadvantage. When he appeared before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee in April 2016, Milley was asked whether the army was “outranged”.

“We don’t like it, we don’t want it, but yes, technically [we are] outranged, outgunned on the ground,” Milley said.

The importance of range

Range – and especially the ability to hit at a distance where an opponent cannot retaliate – has been a prime concern on the battlefield since the days of the Romans. Sometimes, such an advantage has proven to be a deciding factor.

Roman triumvir Crassus is one who certainly would attest to that. When facing Parthian horse archers at the battle of Carrhae in 53 BC, his legions were wiped out when they could not counter their opponents’ range and mobility advantage.

Later, the English would inflict enormous damage on French forces in the Hundred Years’ war. At Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt, English longbowmen significantly outranged their opponents. The great English victories here would effectively end the primacy of heavily armored knights, as well as adding decades to a conflict where the French held a great advantage in both resources and manpower.

Range also played a part in the U.S. War of Independence. Morgan’s Riflemen (famous for their long-range rifles) played their part in securing victory at important battles like Saratoga.

RANGE MATTERS: With superior range, artillery operators could simply disregard counter-battery fire, Thomas Danbolt, Nammo’s Vice President Large Caliber Ammunition, explains. Photo: Nammo.

“There’s a race going on”

Longbows are however a thing of the past. But Nammo artillery and munitions expert Thomas Danbolt believes range is still of great importance to contemporary weapons, like artillery.

“Range is important. If you can shoot much farther than your opponent, counter-battery fire can simply be disregarded. Your own artillery will be safe, while at the same time you can strike enemy positions with impunity. I think we should not underestimate the consequences of having a range advantage,” says Thomas Danbolt, Nammo’s Vice President Large Caliber Ammunition.

Danbolt thinks major nation-states have seen the importance of this, and are now scrambling to improve their defenses. His colleague, Frank Møller, has been part of designing rocket motors for missiles for decades. He sees a big change in that field as well.

“I think there’s a race going on internationally. Propulsion technology has improved. Cruise missiles are getting longer ranges, better sensors, improved accuracy, and the cost has gone down. But a reaction is coming: armed forces everywhere are scrambling to improve their missile defenses”, says Frank Møller, Nammo’s VP of Strategy and Business Development (Aerospace Propulsion).

150km artillery range

As demand for longer range options increases, ramjet technology has been advancing steadily. It has now come to a point where it can has several new potential applications – both in missiles and artillery.

Nammo already has a long history of producing high-performing artillery ammunition. Now, it once again wants to be at the forefront, developing a new generation of shells covering all range requirements.

150KM ARTILLERY: Ramjet-powered artillery could reach as far out as 150km. With guidance, the projectile would be a mix of a missile and an artillery shell. The 155 mm HE-ExR (extreme range), as it is called, is scheduled for its first live-fire tests in 2020. Photo/illustration: Nammo.
Nammo’s most ambitious project to date has been a Ramjet-powered, guided artillery shell with a range of up to 150 km, now the subject of a development partnership with Boeing’s Phantom Works. The new design is expected to see its first live-fire tests in 2020.

“In practice, this is a mix of a missile and an artillery shell. We are talking about a range that is five to eight times greater than conventional artillery. With the guidance system, we believe we can consistently hit an area as small as the center of a football field. And even though the payload is somewhat smaller, the destructive force will likely be greater because of the accuracy,” Danbolt says.

The Ramjet shell can be fired from every modern 155 mm L52 artillery gun – a trait it shares with all of Nammo’s other long-range shells.

The Ramjet revolution

Ramjets are also very well suited for missiles. In a conventional rocket motor, oxygen accounts for 80 percent of the fuel weight. But a Ramjet instead uses oxygen from the outside air. As a consequence, oxygen can be replaced with fuel, increasing the capacity four or five times. Erland Ørbekk, Nammo’s VP of Technology for Aerospace Propulsion, explains that the advantages are great if a missile can reach high enough speeds.

“In a traditional air breathing motor, you need a compressor, a combustion chamber and a turbine. But in a Ramjet, the oxygen pressure and temperature will be high enough just from reaching a high enough speed (roughly Mach 2.5). A Ramjet missile can have a burn time of up to 300 seconds (5 minutes), and can be throttled up and down, or even turned on and off,” Ørbekk says.

THOROUGH TESTING: Nammo has already completed more than 150 motor tests. Testing so far has been very successful, showing ramjet motors can work in real life. Photo: Nammo.

What operational advantages can we expect?

“A Ramjet-powered missile will be superior to a conventional missile in all possible ways. Ground-based Ramjet missiles will be able to take out high-altitude targets. And if fired from aircraft, they will be effective against high-speed and highly maneuverable fighter jets at much greater distances than today. We believe they could even be effective against some of the new high-speed missiles being introduced outside NATO. If you have a good enough sensor system on the ground, it will be possible for Ramjet-powered missiles to intercept them.”

Ready in a few years

Ramjet-powered artillery and missiles could be ready sooner than you think. Nammo has already completed more than 150 successful tests of its ramjet engines. While artillery ramjets could reach up to 150km, some air-to-air missiles could hit targets from an even more impressive 500km distance.

Frank Møller is sure we will see products on the market within a few years.

“Long-range Ramjet artillery will likely be on the market within two to four years. For missiles, it will take a bit longer, but we are confident that the technology is ready. What we are working on now is more focused on the practical applications and technical solutions.”

Are you sure of that? Are you sure the technology will work?

“Absolutely. And it will be a momentous change.”

Taking on a New Case

Nammo logotype

Nammo – Sep 16, 2019 16:19 CEST

LIGHTENS THE LOAD: A box of .50 cal polymer ammunition. It has one big advantage: a much lower weight compared to traditional ammunition. Photo: Nammo

After more than 150 years, the look – and weight – of ammunition is finally changing.

For decades, some of the best and brightest material scientists in the world have been looking for a solution to a highly complex challenge in the ammunition business – how do you replace a bullet’s heavy brass case with a lighter material that is still strong enough to handle the stresses of machine gun fire?

For a long time many would try, but no one would succeed.

Don’t crack in the snow, don’t melt in the sun.

One of the lightweight materials that some hoped would one day replace brass included various types of polymer – roughly equivalent to a stronger form of plastic. But there were big problems. While often performing well in normal temperatures these early polymer cases would become brittle and break in extreme cold, or become soft and melt at high temperatures – the exact kind of conditions where military grade ammunition would be required to perform.

“A polymer that could be used for ammunition cases just didn’t exist,” said Joe Gibbons, a material scientist that revolutionized the industry when in 2003 he and a team began developing a new, highly durable material they believed would be up to the task.

“Most people would think that developing a new polymer is fairly common, but actually we were the first to do that in nearly 25 years.”

This new lightweight polymer offered outstanding performance, and even proved capable of resolving the issues of low and high temperatures. In 2007, seeing the potential of their new invention, Gibbons helped set up a company called MAC LLC in Bay St Louis, Mississippi, to develop their new polymer into a real competitor to the brass casings used on ammunition for more than 150 years.

“We dismissed the conventional wisdom of traditional ammunition manufacturers,” said Gibbons, who is now Plant Manager at MAC LLC’s Mississippi facility.

“People have been trying for 70 to 80 years to make polymer-cased ammunition and we were the first successful ones. We were convinced that we could find the right material, and it appears that we have.

“We are now very competitive with brass casings,” he added.

MAC’s polymer cased ammunition is already in production and qualified by the US government. Photo: MAC LLC.

Already in the Game

As a testament to its success, MAC LLC already has the capacity to produce four million polymer cases per year – mainly 50 .cal (12.7mm) – and has the ability to ramp up to 10 million units to meet future demand. They received a further boost in 2018 when ammunition specialists Nammo bought a majority stake in MAC LLC. This expands MAC’s reach to the rest of the world, with its European debut taking place at the Nammo booth at this year’s DSEI in London, England.

Polymer-cased 50 .cal rounds have already been qualified by the US Government, and are in use with some units including US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). These cases represent a hybrid design, with polymer used for most of the casing while retaining a hardened metal base to ensure maximum reliability, particularly for holding the primer element in and supporting the extraction phase.

Taking a Load Off Their Backs

The .50 cal round is fired by the famous M2 Browning heavy machine gun, a formidable weapon designed nearly a century ago by firearm legend John Browning and still in use today on a range of vehicles, vessels and helicopters.

Ensuring that these platforms are not loaded down with too much weight is vital for today’s operations.

“Weight is of critical importance,” explained David Rolen, a former USSOCOM acquisition professional, and now Nammo’s US Director of Business Development.

“Whether it is the individual soldier only being able to carry so much on his or her back, or vehicles only being weight limited on capacity.”

Light helicopters are among those that would stand to benefit the most from the weight savings offered by polymer ammunition. Here US forces test polymer cased ammunition on an AH-6 Little Bird. Photo by MAC LLC.

Rolen explained that lightweight assets – such as small tactical vehicles, patrol boats and scout/gunship helicopters – benefit hugely from the new 50 .cal ammunition, saving approximately 122lbs (55.3kg) per 1,500 rounds loaded on the platform. This allows warfighters to carry extra fuel – extend range and loiter times – or carry even more kit such as life-saving equipment, food and water, or extra ammunition.

Keep Making it Better

Kim Helge Dahl, Program Director for 12.7 mm ammunition at Nammo’s facility in Raufoss, Norway, explained that while one polymer-cased round weighed 20% less than a brass equivalent, Nammo and MAC LLC have decreased the weight further by developing a polymer link for the 50 .cal ammo, as well as a qualified polymer box to hold 100 rounds. The complete weight of an ammunition box is now reduced by an impressive 33% compared with metal boxes and link.

That means that a pallet full of ammunition that used to weigh 900kg is now only 600kg – that’s nearly a third of a ton in weight saved.

“As well as the lighter weight of the polymer case developed by MAC, customers can also benefit from the various projectile technologies that we have developed at Nammo, including the popular Multipurpose (MP) round,” explained Dahl.

This round features a tungsten carbide penetrator and incendiary compositions that means it can provide a range of blast, fragmentation and incendiary effects. It also provides anti-armor capability and “extreme accuracy” at long ranges.

Interestingly, Dahl revealed another benefit of polymer cases that is not just about saving weight. “We saw that it had a much better performance when it came to accuracy compared to what we were used to with the brass rounds,” he said.

That comes down to the nature of the polymer manufacturing process, which provides less variation from round to round, and results in a more consistent product with respect to dispersion, pressure, and other critical characteristics of accuracy and precision. This has been described as a game changer by US forces that have used the round, particularly long range shooters that are equipped with the .50 cal M107 (Barrett M82) anti-materiel rifle.

Big Plans for the Future

Before adoption by USSOCOM, much of the early testing of the MAC LLC polymer-cased ammunition and its maturation was led by the US Marine Corps (USMC), beginning around a decade ago via the Defense Production Act Title III program. This fruitful partnership with the USMC is set to continue in the future.

As well as offering this mature 50 .cal solution to customers around the world, Nammo and MAC LLC are also exploring other calibers options.

MAC LLC currently has a development contract with the US Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium to design a polymer-cased 7.62mm round for use in miniguns and light machine guns. There is also work with the US Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office to develop a .338 Norma Magnum solution. Additionally, there is potential interest in upscaling to 20mm or 25mm for larger machine guns – although that is still on the drawing board, for now at least.

“We look forward to working with our customers to discover new solutions for this innovative technology,” said Rolen.

“Nammo is a leading provider of specialty and niche ammunition to customers, and incorporating MAC into the Nammo family will help us strengthen that bond with our customers to provide a reliable advantage to them.”

“Could not have asked for better conditions to shoot the last Area Championship of my 2019 season. Excellent weather, challenging stages, and ammunition that is boring in its reliability, consistency, and performance. The focus should be on the match, on the execution, and on the experience, not on what is in your magazine. Only one more match left, and it is the 2019 USPSA Open National Championship. I don’t plan to change a thing,” commented Vlieger. Vlieger has fired over 55,000 rounds of ammunition with Shell Shock Technologies’ NAS3 cases since becoming sponsored in 2017 and plans to continue using it.

Schutz and Cotter competed against 205 competitors at the High Desert Classic. Schutz finished with 1056.6093 match points and a time of 221.15, while Cotter finished with1071.3314 match points and a time of 219.13.

“Shell Shock Technologies’ NAS3 cases worked flawlessly and provided consistent ammo allowing the trust to run the challenging courses of fire. Smooth feeding and extraction for the NAS3 9mm cases allowed for 9mm Major to be loaded safely and consistently to a power factor of 172. Huge thank you to Shell Shock Technologies and Atlas Gunworks for the awesome products that help me push my limits and improve on my shooting goals,” Schutz remarked.

Cotter said, “I’m happy with this performance, while not the overall win I was hoping for I look forward to performing to my fullest at Nationals in two weeks. Thank you to Shell Shock Technologies for giving me the trust in my equipment that is required to win.”

About Shell Shock Technologies NAS3 Cases:

NAS3 9mm cases are 50 percent lighter than brass cases, offer greater lubricity and will not abrade, clog, foul, wear-out or damage breach and ejector mechanisms. The cases offer greater corrosion resistance, tensile strength (2x stronger) and elasticity than brass. NAS3cases will not split, chip, crack or grow (stretch) and are fully reloadable (using S3 Reload dies) and can be reloaded many more times than brass cases. NAS3 cases have been tested successfully by customers to pressures over 70k psi. NAS3 cases can be picked up with a magnet. The head can be colored for branding purposes and easy load identification.

NAS3 is “Best in Class” for maintaining consistent velocity between rounds. In an independent test performed by H.P. White Laboratory (a major munitions testing facility), rounds fired using NAS3 cases achieved a velocity standard deviation of 0.093 FPS (124-grain FMJ bullet, 4.2 grains Titegroup powder, 10 rounds, extreme variation 3fps).
