AFRL’s THOR hammers drones in new video animation

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AFNS) —

The Air Force Research Laboratory has created a new video animation that realistically depicts a Tactical High-power Operational Responder, or THOR, destroying swarms of enemy drones in a base defense scenario.
In an effort to counter the increasing threat posed by enemy drones and other airborne threats, the Air Force developed the THOR.
THOR is a prototype Directed Energy weapon used to disable the electronics in drones, and was specifically engineered to counter multiple targets – such as a drone swarm – with rapid results.
High energy lasers kill one target at a time, and high powered microwaves can kill groups or swarms, which is one reason THOR offers a unique capability.
“The system output is powerful radio wave bursts, which offer a greater engagement range than bullets or nets, and its effects are silent and instantaneous,” said Amber Anderson, THOR program manager .
Anderson went on to explain THOR is housed in a 20-foot shipping unit, can be transported in a military cargo plane and assembled by just two people.
“Drones represent an emerging threat to U.S. military bases, personnel and infrastructure, and it is THOR’s mission to keep them safe, at close range and from a distance,” Anderson said.

Delivery of the GTK Boxer vehicles ordered by the Bundeswehr now completed

Delivery of the GTK Boxer vehicles ordered by the Bundeswehr now completed Munich, 23 June 2021 – ARTEC GmbH, as a contractual partner and subsidiary of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, has officially handed over the last of the Boxer armoured transport vehicles (GTK) ordered to date by the Bundeswehr to representatives of the Federal procurement agency (BAAINBw) and the Ministry of Defence. The contract for the 2nd batch, which was concluded in December 2015, comprised 131 GTK Boxers and was worth EUR 478 million. All the experience gained with modifications from the successful Afghanistan mission have been incorporated into this A2 version. Despite the pandemic, which at times had a considerable impact on delivery dates, the contractual deadline for the completion of the 2nd batch was met thanks to the constructive, pragmatic and trusting cooperation between industry and the customer. In total, the two parent companies of ARTEC GmbH have delivered 405 Boxer vehicles to the Bundeswehr. Among them were 72 Boxers in the ambulance variant, 65 command vehicles and 256 infantry group vehicles. In 2017, a contract was signed to retrofit the combat upgrade as part of the overhaul of the Boxer fleet. With the final order in 2021, a retrofit of additional vehicles, all Boxers will be upgraded to the new design standard by 2024. ARTEC GmbH was founded in 1999 and is a joint venture between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG and Rheinmetall. The company coordinates series production and serves as the point of contact for all export issues relating to the Boxer.

Steiner’s Hybrid Optic Revolution

Steiner Optik was founded in 1947 for the production of day-optical systems, and for almost 75 years the Steiner brand has been synonymous with quality. The company has pioneered a number of industry firsts over the years and has been continuing to innovate with the concept of Hybrid Optics. Hybrid Optics marry the best features of conventional day optics with the rapid technological advancements available in the digital world, bringing substantial value to their Defense customers worldwide.

Steiner unveiled its first laser rangefinder (LRF) binocular in 2009. In hindsight, this was the first of many hybrid optical systems the company would produce. An LRF binocular consists of a standard optical train optimized for high light transmission, but also includes a pulsed laser emitter, a photodetector to receive the return beam, and a micro-display to project an aiming point and/or text (distance to target, for example). The micro-display is overlaid onto the user’s field of view (FOV) with a beamcombiner, giving him an unobstructed view of the area while simultaneously displaying key information like range.

Range data quickly transitioned to another of Steiner’s key products – sighting systems. In 2013, Steiner unveiled the Intelligent Combat Sight (ICS), which was the first MIL-grade combat sight with an integrated LRF. A user can highlight a target, press the range button, and immediately receive a new digital aiming point, with the ICS taking into account the bullet drop for the range to the selected target, as calculated by the included ballistic computer. This system is one of the first “disturbed reticle” scopes available for Defense customers, and again represents some of the best capabilities of a hybrid optical system. In this case, by reducing soldier load in bullet-trajectory-calculations during a battle.

While many customers appreciate the ease of use of a disturbed reticle solution, some customers desire an advanced ability to access information while retaining full situational awareness. To support these customers, Steiner introduced the Intelligent Firing Solution (IFS) series of scopes in 2018. To build this system, Steiner took advantage of cutting-edge micro-display technology to project a wide variety of information at the top of the user’s FOV, overlaid onto the scene. This means the user can retain eyes-on-target, while getting detailed information about range, wind direction, ballistics, and necessary etched-reticle adjustments to ensure an accurate shot the first time. Rotary encoders track turret position, spotters can communicate range and wind via wired interface or via Bluetooth, and an onboard ballistics calculator utilizes environmental sensors to display a real-time ballistic solution. Range can come from Steiner’s own LRF binoculars, and there is even a phone app to upload new ballistic profiles to the scope. This hybrid optical system represents the state-of-the-art for snipers and designated marksmen.

In 2019, Steiner unveiled the Close Quarters Thermal sight. This industry-first hybrid-optical system overlays see-through thermal imagery directly on top of the real-world scene, giving the appearance of an augmented reality display. In effect, Steiner has brought the capabilities of a fighter jet’s heads-up-display to the dismounted soldier. The CQT includes not only a dedicated red dot aiming point but adds the profound target-detection capabilities of a thermal imager.

2019 also saw Steiner deliver a fire-control system to the US Army under the Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR) program. This highly integrated system packed a high-powered LRF, visible and near-infrared aiming lasers, onboard environmental sensors, a ballistic calculator, and a thermal camera together. The resulting system could range a target and immediately generate a disturbed reticle that would account for not only range, but windage as well as weapon orientation, all while simultaneously displaying see-through thermal imagery. This system was the culmination of work started in both the IFS and CQT, with some advanced laser optics from Steiner eOptics thrown in, as well.

Steiner continues to develop future hybrid optical systems. As the company pushes forward, users will see a greater ability to access data, advanced disturbed reticles for ease-of-use and reduced training loads, and an open architecture allowing integration with a wide array of industry partners.

Rafael’s Trophy Active Protection System selected for integration on the UK’s Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank

Tel Aviv, June 24, 2021 – Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. announces that its Trophy Active Protection System (APS) for armored vehicles has been selected for the next phase of detailed assessment and integration by the UK Ministry of Defense for the Army’s Challenger 3 MBT.

The selection is a result of a study conducted by the UK MOD as part of an upgrade program led by prime contractor Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), which will entail detailed integration and system trials of this lighter Trophy variant (Trophy MV), to fit the particular requirements of this vehicle.

Developed by Rafael in response to successful anti-armor attacks, Trophy APS provides mature, combat-proven protection against rocket and missile threats and simultaneously locates the origin of the hostile fire for immediate response. Trophy is the only fully-integrated, combat-proven APS in the world and has been installed on Israel Defense Forces’ Merkava tanks since 2010, and has also been installed on the Namer APCs. Trophy has also been supplied to four US Army Abrams MBT brigades, and will soon be supplied to Germany for its Leopard MBT’s.

Trophy has made numerous combat interceptions with no injuries to crews or dismounted troops or damage to platforms since its first operational interception in 2011. Trophy has accrued over 1,000,000 operating hours, including 5,400 successful field tests, and is now under contract for serial production of over 1,800 systems.

The new rangefinding binoculars continue Bushnell’s 25-year legacy of laser rangefinder development while featuring 1 mile ranging capability plus an all-new ACTIVSYNC™ display system that fluidly morphs from black to red readouts based on lighting conditions. These full-size 10×42 binoculars not only feature the high-quality glass users have come to expect from Bushnell, but also boast the capabilities of a laser rangefinder into a single, intuitive optic.

At the core of the Fusion X is a sophisticated ACTIVSYNC display that allows users to maintain visibility in low-light and day-bright lighting conditions. The ACTIVSYNC display automatically changes color readings, meaning hunters can range targets just as well 30 minutes before sunrise as they can at midday. The display can even show red and black simultaneously if the environment requires it.

The Fusion X binoculars boast one mile ranging capability with a +/- one-yard accuracy. To activate the binoculars, simply push the ranging button to power on the rangefinder, as well as to activate single range and scan mode. For quick application setup, a second button on the bridge of the binocular offers users to select from multiple modes.

Near/far ranging modes allow users to home in on the target while ignoring objects in the foreground and background. Meanwhile, bow and rifle ballistics modes provide the right data for your next shot. Fusion X also features height mode, which uses two ranged points and the angle in between to calculate the height of an object (such as a tree).

For the best possible optical quality, the Fusion X is built around a High-Definition Optical System (HDOS) for clarity and low-light performance in the field. Fully multi-coated lenses give users increased clarity and performance in low-light conditions.

These binoculars are built tough, too. Rubber armor and IPX7 waterproof construction, as well as EXO Barriers on the lens surfaces, protect the binoculars from the roughest and wettest conditions in the field. In fact, Bushnell’s engineers test the waterproof bonds by submerging the binoculars in one meter of water for 30 minutes to check for any moisture penetration.

“I expect to represent my country well, I expect to be focused, and I expect to win,” said Brian Burrows, who remembers seeing his first Olympic Games in 2004 and making it his mission to compete there. “As a team I feel that we are very strong. We are both mentally tough and very experienced competitors. Even though shooting is mostly an individual sport, we will work together as Team USA to support and encourage one another. I expect to see great things from us in Tokyo.”

FAA Announces Approved Administrators for Recreational Drone Pilot Safety Test

WASHINGTON Sixteen organizations have been selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to initially administer the Recreational Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety Test (TRUST). The test was developed to provide recreational drone flyers with aeronautical safety knowledge and an overview of the rules for operating drones in the National Airspace System.

These organizations are key to making this test widely available and easily accessible to recreational drone pilots, said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. We need pilots of all aircraft, including those who operate recreational drones, to have the training and knowledge needed to operate safely in the nation’s airspace.

Links to test administrators are available on the FAA website. The test is administered online at no cost through the approved test administrators.

After passing the test, recreational drone flyers will be issued a completion certificate which they are required to show if asked by FAA or law enforcement personnel. The completion certificate does not expire. Recreational drone flyers should take the test at their earliest convenience.

Congress required the development of the testing program in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018. The drone community provided input into the test development.

On May 7th, 2021, the BATFE released a set of new proposed rules regarding Privately Made Firearms, or ‘PMFs’. This came after weeks of positioning by leaders in the executive and legislative branches, and the resulting policy includes a myriad of new regulations and definitions that impact American gun rights.
Because these rules are regulatory expansion by the executive branch, there won’t be a Senate or House vote. This is a decision made by the leadership of the ATF and Department of Justice to change their enforcement of existing laws, and an expansive overreach of regulatory authority by the ATF.
The Department of Justice has invited Americans to provide their feedback on the proposed rule changes, and we’re eager to provide it. Below, we’ve provided a high-level summary of some changes made under 2021R-05. At the bottom of the page, you’ll find additional information on how to send your feedback to the ATF—and why it’s important that every gun-owner make their voice heard.

The buffer is one of the more overlooked components in most rifles.
In the current market, cost constraints and a desire for rifles to run with cheap, underpowered, steel jacketed ammunition are driving forces for many firearms companies who are involved in what appears to be a constant race for the bottom.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of the Air Force signed an agreement (PDF) aimed at eliminating red tape while protecting public safety during commercial space activities at ranges operated by the U.S. Space Force.

The agreement recognizes common safety standards for FAA-licensed launch and reentry activities that occur on, originate from, or return to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It also removes duplicative processes and approvals for the U.S. commercial space sector.

“Assured access to space is vital to our national security,” said Acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth. “The launch licensing standards provided in the agreement will support a rapidly expanding commercial launch sector and strengthen our space industrial base, bolstering our economy and enhancing our security as a nation.”

“Building a streamlined regulatory approach for commercial space activities at these federal launch sites is the right thing to do for public safety and U.S. competitiveness,” said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. “This agreement will help the burgeoning U.S. commercial space industry grow even faster and continue to lead the world in safety and innovation.”

Under the agreement, the FAA will accept the Department of the Air Force’s ground safety rules and other safety processes, analyses, and products as long as they satisfy FAA regulations. The Department of the Air Force will accept FAA licensing decisions and generally will not impose its own requirements for the flight portion of a launch or reentry.

In addition, the two agencies will consult before responding to commercial space operator requests for relief from safety requirements and on the development of hazard areas. The two ranges each have four FAA-licensed commercial space transportation companies authorized to conduct launch operations. In 2020, the FAA licensed 39 commercial space launches, the most in the agency’s history. Of those, 24 occurred at, and were supported by, these two U.S. Space Force ranges.

· Measure and report monthly performance and metrics of all social media channels and websites

· Design graphic materials for social media and other areas as needed

· Consistently monitors competitor and other leading brands to look for new and fresh ideas to bring to U.S. LawShield social media channels

· Drive engagement for company blogs via social platforms

· Utilize social listening tools to monitor reputation management of company’s social activity as well as the competitors and other industry social channels

· Work with Marketing & Communications to build company influencer program

· Set and meet deadlines for multiple projects while maintaining accuracy and efficiency through effective project management skills

· This role will always work cross-functionally with Communications, Marketing (Content Team), Legal and outside agencies

Required Skills/Abilities

· Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, Business, or related field preferred

· 5-7 years’ experience in content/social strategy required

· Firearm Industry experience highly preferred

· B2B and B2C marketing experience preferred

· Hootsuite and Salesforce experience preferred

· Social listening skills required
