NSSF Releases 2021 Research Reports Providing Valuable Data for Firearm Retailers and Other Industry Businesses

NEWTOWN, Conn. – NSSF®, the trade association for the firearm industry, has announced a listing of industry research reports issued from January through August of this year that can help industry members, particularly firearm retailers, better understand buying trends across the nation and access data that can assist in developing marketing strategies.

“These NSSF research reports will help industry businesses gain insights into their customers’ motivations for purchasing firearms and their participation in recreational shooting,” said Dianne Vrablic, NSSF Manager, Industry Research. “We’ve seen extraordinary market activity in the firearm industry in the last few years, including millions of first-time gun purchasers. Americans are exercising their right to purchase and use firearms at an unprecedented level, and NSSF research can help industry better understand these trends.”

NSSF Research Reports

NSSF reports offered in the last nine months and now available are . . .

· Firearms Retailer Survey 2021 Edition (conducted by Southwick Associates) — A report based on a survey of retailers during 2020 that identifies best-selling products and who is buying them. The survey allows retailers to compare their business to that of other gun stores across the country. Among the survey’s findings is that 85.6 percent of retailers surveyed reported overall sales in 2020 exceeded sales from 2019.

· 2020 Firearms Consumer Personas, Phase I Report (by Southwick Associates) — This update to the original 2016 consumer segmentation study of firearm owners helps firearm retailers understand their customers’ core needs and motivations. The data is valuable for planning marketing strategies to appeal to any or all of the five different types of buyer personas, their priorities and interests.

· Sport Shooting Participation in the U.S. in 2020 (developed by Responsive Management) — This report provides regional and national participation figures for a variety of recreational shooting activities in 2020. Among its findings is that the rate of participation in nearly every shooting activity was higher in 2020 than in any other year. NSSF encourages its members to attend a webinar from Responsive Management this fall presenting findings from the study.

· NSGA Shooting Sports Participation Report 2021 Edition (by the National Sporting Goods Association for NSSF)—This report provides a detailed look at a variety of hunting and shooting sports disciplines with demographic breakdowns, frequency and number of days of participation, and state-level participation figures. Among its findings: hunting with firearms increased from 17.2 million to 18.3 million participants.

· First-Time Gun Buyers 2021 Edition (conducted for the NSSF by InfoManiacs, Inc.)—To discover motivations for the first purchase of a firearm and what type of firearms were purchased, NSSF conducted research in December 2020 with consumers aged 18 or older who purchased their first firearm in 2019 or 2020. Among the findings, the top-ranking factors for first-time gun purchases are home protection and self-defense (both 80.3 percent) and also to get involved in shooting sports activities.

NSSF research reports are available via the NSSF Online Store. NSSF members will need to log in to access member pricing. The 2020 Firearms Consumer Personas, Phase I Report is free of charge. Non-members may obtain the free 2020 Firearms Consumer Personas four-page brochure plus the full Phase-I report by sending an email request to dvrablic@nssf.org. Fort Worth, Texas (September 20, 2021) – XS® Sights is now offering a Lever Rail™ and Ghost Ring sets for Henry .45-70 round barrel rifles, giving hunters increased capability in the field.  Made of anodized aluminum, the XS Lever Rail is CNC machined for durability to withstand years of hard use.  This Picatinny-style rail is lightweight, easy to install, and accommodates XS Ghost Ring sets or any optic from scout scopes to red dot sights.  The XS Ghost Ring White Stripe (WS) sets provide an excellent field of view for hunters who prefer iron sights to optics.

Installation requires the removal of the factory rear sight. All screws torque to 20 inch-pounds. Over-torquing can fracture or break screws.

Both models of the XS Ghost Ring WS hunting sights improve accuracy and deliver faster sight acquisition. 

Precision machined in Fort Worth, Texas, the XS Ghost Ring WS sets are fully adjustable for windage and elevation and come with two apertures, .230″ and .191″ inside diameter, for different lighting conditions. The large Ghost Ring affords a great field of view for fast target acquisition. The XS White Stripe (WS) front sight replaces the existing blade and ramp and features a blued steel body with a painted white stripe face. The white-on-black front post is highly visible in all lighting conditions and provides contrast against any color background.

Due to moving the rear sight from the barrel to the receiver, some zeroing issues might arise. Alternate front sight heights are available and covered under XS’ No Questions Asked Warranty.

The advancement of the SLX and SLH series of suppressors was realized through the wholesale transition of the SIG SAUER product line to Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) resulting in the most innovative suppressor technology to date – the next generation of suppressors has arrived.

The SIG SAUER SLX Series of suppressors are designed to drastically reduce toxic fume inhalation by the end-user and sound reduction and are available for 5.56 or 7.62 NATO calibers.  The SLX suppressors feature a monolithic core construction in Inconel, an internal multi-flow path to exhaust gases at a higher rate resulting in lower toxic fume inhalation, a sound reducing baffle design, a flash reducing end cap, and are available with either the new Clutch-Lock QD mounting system for easy install and removal that offers an intuitive tactile locking ring with infinite radial locking positions, or direct thread. 

The SIG SAUER SLH Series of suppressors are designed to provide the highest degree of sound reduction in both supersonic and subsonic ammunitions and available for 7.62 NATO and 300BLK calibers.  The SLH suppressors feature a monolithic core construction in either Inconel or Titanium, an internal multi-flow path to exhaust gases at a higher rate resulting in lower toxic fume inhalation, a sound reducing baffle design, a flash reducing end cap, and are available with either the new Clutch-Lock QD mounting system for easy install and removal that offers an intuitive tactile locking ring with infinite radial locking positions, or direct thread.

Nighthawk Custom’s Interchangeable Optic System

The most versatile optic solution you will find, Nighthawk Custom’s Interchangeable Optic System is the best optic system on the market. The IOS utilizes removeable plates that allow the shooter to switch from standard iron sights to a red dot in less than 30 seconds, while holding zero. Users can switch plates by, first, untightening a screw on top of their iron sights plate, releasing the retaining pin. The retaining pin can then be pushed out of the side of the plate, allowing the plate to easily slide off the back of the firearm. Then, slide on the plate with your red dot optic, insert the retaining pin and tighten the screw. Just like that, you’ve switched from iron sights to a red dot. And the best part is, with our dovetail cut- each plate will always retain zero. There is never a need to re-sight in a pistol after changing plates. The optic system is also cut low in the slide so that you run regular height front sights, instead of tall suppressor sights like most systems on the market.

HGH announces new contract for military airbase surveillance at DSEI, London

EOTECH Magnifiers enhance any EOTECH Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS) by enlarging the target’s image when needed. EOTECH’s G43 and G45 magnifiers pair perfectly with any EOTECH HWS, transforming them into flexible CQC to medium-range weapon sight systems.

The magnifiers include a Switch-to-Side magnifier mount with a locking, adjustable, quick-detach lever. When mounted, the magnifier snaps into place behind the HWS when needed and out of the way when not required. Its ambidextrous design switches either to the right or left to accommodate the shooter’s preference. Both magnifiers feature tool-free vertical and horizontal adjustments for simple reticle centering. An adjustable diopter quickly focuses the magnifier to suit the user’s eyes.

“The biggest advantage the magnifiers offer with a Holographic Weapon Sight is that the dot size doesn’t change when viewed with magnification” said Mark Miller, Product Manager for EOTECH. “The target enlarges, but the dot remains 1MOA providing greater accuracy. This is different from red dots because their dots will grow in size at the same rate as the target, so no additional precision is gained.”

Both the G43 and G45 magnifiers have similar specifications; the biggest difference is their magnification. The G43 is a 3X magnifier, while the G45 is a 5X. The G45’s additional 2X magnification allows precise aiming at greater distances. The G43, at 3X, offers a slightly wider field-of-view than the G45 for better situational awareness at mid-range distances. Choosing the best magnifier comes down to the shooter’s preference.

ANOKA, Minnesota – September 15, 2021 – Team Federal Precision Rifle Series shooter Buck Holly finished strong in the 3rd Annual Federal Gold Medal PRS Match. The event was held at Alabama Precision in Carbon Hill, Alabama, September 11-12. With 140 shooters in attendance, Holly took home the top trophy in the Gas Gun category and placed eleventh overall during this two-day PRS Pro Series Qualifier match.

“Buck is a hardcore competitor. He has the experience and grit to shoot well in spite of adverse conditions,” said Federal Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “It was a lot of fun to watch his performance and I’m proud that Federal Gold Medal ammunition was part of the equation.”

Holly, who hails from Richmond Hill, Georgia, uses Federal Gold Medal 6mm Creedmoor factory ammunition loaded with 105-grain Berger Hybrid bullets in his GA Precision MSR-style rifle when competing.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information

The 32nd Annual NDIA SO/LIC Symposium planning team continues to monitor the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation as the health of our event participants, members, and partners remains our top priority. We are committed to following the guidelines and precautions as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Attendees can expect to see the following at NDIA events:

PROOF OF VACCINATION: All attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination or proof of negative COVID-19 test within three (3) days of arrival. Details for securely providing documentation will be provided shortly on the event website.
MASKS: Fully vaccinated attendees are encouraged to wear face masks but, in accordance with CDC guidance, may make that choice for themselves. If you are not fully vaccinated, you are required to wear a face mask in public places.
WAIVER: All registrants are required to sign the COVID-19 waiver during the online registration process. Attendees may disclose their vaccination status at the time of signing.
SOCIAL DISTANCING: Additional venue space will be available to allow for attendees to spread out. Timed badge pick-ups will be implemented to reduce crowding at registration.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE: Food and beverage areas will be designed to minimize touch points utilizing individually packaged or attended stations.

Virginia Beach, Va. (September 2021) – Mike Noell, CEO of SENTRY Tactical™, was recently featured as a guest on TacticalPay Radio with host Brett Grayson. Grayson jumped right into the podcast summarizing Noell’s background as a Navy SEAL, leading into his founding of BLACKHAWK!, a highly reputable brand that dominated the tactical gear market for over a decade, and introducing Noell’s new endeavor, SENTRY Tactical™.

Grayson asked Noell to share why after a successful run with BLACKHAWK! he did not just sit on the beach and enjoy the fruits of his labor. Noell explained that he feels he was put on this earth to do what he is currently doing, which is designing, manufacturing, and marketing products that enhance human performance. The products that SENTRY Tactical™ produces are designed and made to enable special operation forces, police, and even sport shooters to perform their mission or job better.

When asked if BLACKHAWK! was a competitor to SENTRY’s product line, Noell responded that the products are different and don’t compete but acknowledged an overlap in customer crossover. He pointed out that SENTRY is focused on producing the next generation and the next level of equipment for their military, law enforcement, and special forces customers.

Noell admitted that “you are only as good as your last operation,” and has built on his former successful business model by bringing back his former executive team, operations, manufacturing, and marketing under the new SENTRY Tactical™ banner. “SENTRY is light years ahead of BLACKHAWK!,” Noell added, also revealing that SENTRY is working on Tier 1 level products that the company will be able to scale toward other markets from law enforcement to shooting sports, and hunting.

At SENTRY, the focus is on providing a solution to a problem or a requirement. As an example, Noell explained that their modular 1080-2 Molle/PALS system is made with hydrophobic materials that will not absorb water, and therefore is corrosion, mildew, and mold resistant, while not increasing in weight due to water absorption. This, he explains, is a facet of the solution they are working on for their military customers, as is micro-adjusting capabilities. By allowing individuals to micro-adjust their gear, operators, police, and first responders can maneuver quickly and confidently and stay focused on their job instead of their gear.

In summing up the conversation, Noell reflected on his competitive sailing in his youth, his Navy SEAL service, and years as an entrepreneur, by letting listeners know that the thing that gets him up in the morning is what he and his SENTRY team are doing to support and enhance mission effectiveness for special forces, military, and law enforcement. Noell also warned prospective entrepreneurs, that creating your own business is the hardest thing he has ever done, although, it is something Noell and his team at SENTRY are passionately pursuing again.
