Columbus, Miss. (November 2, 2021) – APEX Ammunition is now shipping its premium, non-toxic, ultra-high-density Tungsten Super Shot (TSS), TSS / S3 Steel Blend, and S3 Steel Waterfowl loads. 

All APEX Waterfowl loads feature the advanced Tungsten-grade wad system used in the company’s legendary Turkey TSS loads to deliver the tightest patterns and best barrel protection possible.

APEX Waterfowl TSS loads are meticulously handloaded for ultimate performance. Made from 18.1 g/cc density tungsten alloy, Tungsten Super Shot is the most versatile and hardest hitting shotshell pellet in existence today. It is denser than Lead (11.34 g/cc), Bismuth (9.8 g/cc), Copper (8.8 g/cc), or Steel (7.84 g/cc), which allows the use of smaller-sized shot and significantly more pellets in TSS loads than other shotshells (No. 9 TSS hits like No. 4 Lead).  More pellets per ounce means a more powerful payload with higher pattern density and superior knockdown power at extended ranges. TSS is also highly effective in sub-gauge shotguns for those who prefer hunting waterfowl with 20-gauge or even 28-gauge guns.

These handcrafted “duplex” loads combine No. 9 Tungsten Super Shot with APEX’s S3 zinc-plated steel shot (available in sizes 2, 4, or BB in 12 gauge and size 4 in 20 gauge). A limited supply of No. 7.5 TSS will also be available in this blended line later in the season.

The zinc coating on the premium-grade, perfectly uniform APEX steel shot ensures optimum patterning in a steel load and, when combined with ultra-high-density TSS, helps deliver a harder hitting payload and improved terminal performance to reduce crippling.

Waterfowl S3 Steel

APEX Waterfowl S3 Steel is zinc-plated for improved performance. Normal steel shot has tiny voids and uneven surfaces from the manufacturing process. APEX’s zinc-coating process fills these voids and imperfections creating more consistent and rounder pellets. The zinc also acts as a lubricant resulting in more consistent pellet drop when loading and greatly reduces the chance of pellet “bridging” where one pellet becomes locked with another. The reduced friction also allows for better movement of the pellets against each other in the firing process, resulting in fewer stray pellets known as “fliers”. The same Tungsten-grade wad system used in the TSS line is also used in the S3 shotshells and, when combined with APEX’s premium zinc-plated steel, delivers superior patterning previously unattainable in a steel load.

The WheelGunner secures a large revolver with a combination of hand molding and an adjustable hammer thong. Simply slip the hammer thong off and the gun is cleared for a fast, smooth draw.

The Ironhide secures a semiautomatic pistol with a combination of hand molding and a reversible retention strap with a glove-friendly polymer tab. Release the strap and the pistol is cleared for another fast, smooth draw. The retention strap accommodates both hammer-down and cocked-and-locked carry on 1911-type pistols.

Both designs allow right or left hand carry by unsnapping the holster from the belt slide, moving the belt slide to the opposite side of the body, reversing the retention strap, and reattaching the holster. The holster body can also be quickly detached from the belt slide, should the carrier need to enter a “non-permissive environment” and temporarily store the handgun.

SWEET HOME, Oregon – November 1, 2021 – HEVI-Shot is proud to announce new HEVI-Hammer Upland loads. New for 2021, HEVI-Shot is offering 12- and 20- gauge options in shot size No. 5, or 7 shot to cover all the needs of hunters targeting large and medium upland game. HEVI-Hammer loads are manufactured using 15-percent high density bismuth (9.64 g/cc) and 85-percent precision steel. That small but mighty leading layer of bismuth over steel delivers nearly 50-percent more down range energy than pellets consisting of all steel at 40 yards.

“We know HEVI-Hammer Upland will help hunters achieve more success in the field,” said Scott Turner, HEVI-Shot’s Product Line Manager. “Upland game is such a beloved and traditional sport. ABEILLON presents our latest advancement map lights : a technical waterproof LED lamps destined for not only card reading, but also for the use of tools in confinement and difficult working conditions. They are installed for use on cockpits of tanks, armored cars, flying machines, ships of all kinds, which are required to work in all types of thermal configurations, day and night, all over the planet. In addition, the specifications for these lamps include an essential aspect that ABEILLON masters perfectly: compatibility with the use of night vision binoculars (NVIS) and other equipment which allows one to see in total darkness. Imagine the convenience of card readers’ users needed to navigate, with the simultaneous use of thermal imaging cameras or prescription glasses for night driving or close combat on a strategic field of operations! The comfort of using military binoculars within the constrained framework of a war machine guarantees the safety of men on the ground.

What is night vision?

Night vision, in an atmospheric or geographical context (cellars, attics, undergrounds, trenches, caches) very dark requires a good understanding of the components of light and their interaction with the human eye. What is captured by the human eye, with or without a suitable device (night vision goggles, for instance), is the energy lost or returned by a heated or an inert object. In fact, the natural mechanism of rotation of the atoms of any object releases photons in the thermal infrared (I.R) spectrum. This wavelength differs depending on the heat given off by the heated object. Heavily heated objects (imagine a forge or a glass factory) emit light in a spectrum ranging from red to orange, yellow, blue and finally white. In night vision, thermal imaging uses a small amount of infrared radiation to work. Therefore, light is the result of a more or less strong source of heat, a quantity of visible energy depending on its wavelength and on which interacts with the retina.

The operation of the residual light amplifier

Let’s discover the two types of existing technologies.

Passive night vision binoculars

Some night vision binoculars, best known for military purposes – given their difficulty to pursue in terms of technological capability and their price, are formidable amplifiers of the ambient light present on the field of operations. The slightest lunar or stellar glow is enough to illuminate the entire terrain on which combatants are equipped with this type of instrument.

Active Night Vision Binoculars

This type of material, rather civilian for security reasons, illuminates the surrounding landscape with an infrared beam. This technology is used by manufacturers of electronic equipment destined for the general public (for remote controls for example). Active vision allows you to see objects by reflection. They are most often amplified to make the best use of residual light.

The use of night vision for civilians

Wildlife viewing in the wild has made the most of this technology. The most discreet wildlife, which lives at night, became difficult to count and protect. Bird watchers and other rare feline specialists took it upon themselves to place waterproof “spy” cameras on the movements of wild animals who are active during the night. This allows us to better understand their habits and health state.However, using a pair of binoculars to see in the dark is common among theaters’ lovers, hunting, night fishing, hiking, wildlife photographers and other archaeologists or speleologists. In different circumstances, this technology is used in the field of security with surveillance cameras.

Munich, Oslo, October 2021 – Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) has symbolically handed over the first of a total of six LEOPARD 2-based LEGUAN bridge laying systems to high-ranking representatives of the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency (NDMA) during a roll-out ceremony. Despite the pandemic, delivery of the systems will begin well ahead of the contractually guaranteed date.
In addition to the LEGUAN on LEOPARD 2 chassis, LEGUAN training simulators and a peripheral package will also be delivered to the Norwegian customer.
Not least because of the performance of the LEOPARD 2 chassis, this system is already under contract with nine user nations. In total, armies from 19 different countries use the LEGUAN bridge laying system on a wide variety of mobility platforms.
The Norwegian Army is thus making a major contribution to the future mobility of European NATO forces.
The LEGUAN is capable of transporting and laying one bridge in the military load class MLC80 (about 72 tons) with a length of 26 meters, or alternatively two bridges with a length of 14 meters each, all under combat conditions.

Smith & Wesson has received two field reports of cracked barrels involving the M&P12 Shotgun. To ensure that all of our Shotguns meet Smith & Wesson’s high standards for quality, we are implementing this Safety Recall of all Shotguns manufactured prior to October 15, 2021, to ensure there are no surface anomalies or conditions that might adversely affect the safety, function or performance of these Shotguns.
Please STOP USING your M&P12 Shotgun until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by
Smith & Wesson.

PRODUCT AFFECTED:
This notice applies to M&P12 Shotguns manufactured prior to October 15, 2021. To determine whether your M&P12 Shotgun is affected, check the label on the box to determine the date of manufacture (see image below). If the manufacture date is prior to October 15, 2021, your shotgun is subject to this Recall and should be returned to Smith & Wesson for inspection. After inspection, if the barrel from your Shotgun is affected, it will be replaced at no cost to you. Your Shotgun will be returned as quickly and efficiently as possible. All shipping and replacement costs will be covered by Smith & Wesson.

FAA Launches Nationwide Solicitation to Design Air Traffic Control Towers of the Future

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is launching a nationwide solicitation to find a new design for control towers that can be built and operated sustainably at regional and municipal airports.
“For communities large and small, the air traffic control tower is an icon. We want architects and engineers from every corner of the country to help build the safe and sustainable towers of the future,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.

The FAA has more than 100 aging control towers at regional and municipal airports across the United States that will eventually need to be replaced. The goal of the nationwide solicitation is to develop a standardized design for towers that will:

Meet operational and cost requirements
Maximize energy efficiency
Be easy to modify according to height needs
Be rapidly constructed

On Nov. 9, the FAA will host a webinar to answer questions from interested businesses before the official solicitation starts. Between now and then, the FAA will raise awareness of the opportunity to minority-owned and disadvantaged businesses.

The registration opening for U.S.-based architectural and engineering design firms is scheduled for  Nov. 16. Details about the webinar and other aspects of the solicitation are available at https://www.faa.gov/go/towerdesign.

A three-phase, best value and fixed-price selection process will be used in accordance with the Acquisition Management System (AMS). 

Phase 1 – Request for Information (RFI): Architectural and engineering firms may submit a general project idea and approach statement. Based on these submissions, the FAA will narrow the field of choices to 15 firms that will be eligible to compete in Phase 2.
Phase 2 – Request for Qualifications (RFQ): In Phase 2, the up to 15 selected firms will be asked to provide resumes, relevant experience and financial capabilities. Based on these submissions, up to six firms will be selected to provide a conceptual design package and cost estimate for the complete tower design in Phase 3.
Phase 3 – Request for Offer (RFO): In Phase 3, the FAA will evaluate the design package and cost estimate from each of the six firms selected from Phase 2.  From those six submissions, the FAA plans to award a contract to a top-rated applicant to fully design the new air traffic control tower concept.

The FAA used a similar approach when it invited architectural firms to develop a modular design concept for new control towers. The agency ultimately selected a proposal from the company headed by rising architect I.M. Pei. Several of the 16 Pei-designed towers—including at Chicago O’Hare, Sacramento, Madison, and Jacksonville international airports—are still operating today.

The tower at Tucson International Airport provides an example of sustainable building already in operation. The tower is the first air traffic facility with net-zero energy consumption. It uses a 1,600-panel solar farm to generate power for all of its electrical needs, and supplies unused power back to the grid. The solar farm also produces ice, which is stored in large containers and used to cool the building when solar panels are not generating electricity. Additional ‘green’ features at Tucson include reflective roofing materials, insulated windows, motion detectors for the low-energy, indoor lights, and no-water landscaping.

Team Federal Shooters Finished on Top at the ISSF President’s Cup

ANOKA, Minnesota – October 28, 2021 – Team Federal shooters Austen Smith and Kayle Browning had remarkable finishes at the ISSF President’s Cup Shotgun match held at the Olympic Shooting Range in Larnaca, Cyprus, October 19-24, 2021. The best 48 athletes from all over the world took part in the competition. They competed for medals in 4 individual and 2 team events. In Women’s Skeet, Austen Smith won gold, while also winning the Mixed Team Skeet competition, paired with Gabriele Rossetti from Italy. In Women’s Trap, Kayle Browning won second place honors.

“We are extremely proud of the stellar performance from Smith and Browning, as well as our other Team Federal athletes who competed at this prestigious, worldwide event,” said Federal Ammunition Vice President of Marketing Jason Nash. “Their accomplishments are a reflection of Federal’s dedication to its quality products and to the shooting sports.”

Austen Smith was the youngest member of the USA Shooting Olympic Team at the Tokyo Games in 2021. She had only been shooting for 7 years prior to making it to her first Olympic games. Austen won World Championship silver in 2017, bronze in 2018, and gold in 2019. She also made headlines by becoming a gold (individual) and bronze medalist (mixed team) at the 2021 ISSF World Cup. Smith is coached by three-time Olympic Champion Vincent Hancock.

Kayle Browning began her shooting career in sporting clays at just 12 years old. As a first time Olympian in 2021, she captured the silver medal in Women’s Trap. Browning shot her way into the finals in the sixth position and then climbed into the final pairing with some clutch shooting. The Arkansas native and Federal-sponsored athlete missed extending the match by one target but realized her Olympic dream by winning silver.

Skills4Life recipients have opportunity to meet with Aaron Lewis at local bird hunt

October 28, 2021- On September 17-19, 2021, four veterans were hosted by Randy Pawelek for a local Dove Hunt in Charco, Texas. Randy, his family and the local community spent the time to host these Heroes and provide a memorable outing. In total, 88 birds were tagged, and each Hero went home with 30 doves for the freezer. In addition to the doves, each Hero was given a shotgun and a rifle from ATA Arms and Christensen Arms respectively.

On a Saturday nearby in Austin, Aaron Lewis was playing a show and heard about Pawelek and community support for our Heroes through this event. Aaron, and his bandmates, loaded up the tour bus and made an impromptu visit spending Friday and Saturday with our Heroes.

Overall, this was a highly successful Skills4Life event, and we look forward to supporting more Heroes and Gold Star families.

ANOKA, Minnesota – October 27, 2021 – Federal was proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the USPSA HiCap Nationals this year, which consisted of two back-to-back matches held at the CMP Marksmanship Park in Talladega, Alabama. The first match was the PCC/Carry Optics Nationals held October 16-18, followed by the Limited/Open (Race Gun) Nationals held October 22-24. Each match featured 18 stages requiring competitors to execute their stage plan thoughtfully and aggressively while placing good hits on difficult targets. Federal also sponsored the USPSA online live streams of those events.

Founded in 1984, the USPSA is the national governing body of competitive practical shooting in the U.S. under the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). The USPSA provides challenging competitive opportunities that pit participants against shooters of similar skill levels in different divisions geared to various handguns, rifles, and shotguns. The association welcomes new shooters of all ages and abilities, and offers club matches all over the country―including Steel Challenge events. As one of the top Limited shooters in the country, Casey competed on the ‘Super Squad’ and represented Team Federal well.”

Melissa Gilliland Named PRS Southeastern Regional Series Top Lady

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – October 26, 2021 – Bushnell®, an industry leader in performance optics, along with RCBS and Hoppe’s, is celebrating pro shooter Melissa Gilliland’s strong finish at the PRS Southeastern Regional Finale, which took place at the Arena Training Facility in Blakely, Georgia.

Gilliland finished the match as Top Lady and 20th overall at the Finale. Her strong finish at the match combined with multiple top placements throughout the season also earned her Top Lady and 14th overall for this year’s Southeastern Regional Series. During the match, Gilliland used the new Bushnell Elite Tactical DMR3 scope with G4P reticle and relied on her RCBS reloading equipment and Hoppe’s gun care to see her through the finale.

According to P.J. Hermosa, CEO of U.S. LawShield, “Unfortunately, over the last 20 years, Halloween has consistently been one of the deadliest nights of the year. Combine the typical daily incidents of drinking while driving with everyday property crimes plus estimates that 70% of parents do not accompany their children while trick-or-treating, and the statistics for Halloween are scary.”

Frightening Numbers

1. People aged 18 and under are involved in an average of 130% more fatal automobile crashes on Halloween night than on any other night of the year.

2. Pedestrians of all ages are 56% more likely to be killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

3. Property crimes are 24% higher on Halloween.

4. The most popular time for trick-or-treating is from 6-10 PM—which happens to be the peak time frame for violent crimes.

Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

“Whether you’re hosting a spooky costume party or preparing to go trick-or-treating with your family, U.S. LawShield wants to help you be as prepared and responsible as possible,” Hermosa stated.

1. Safety Tips for Kids

· Adult Supervision – All children aged 13 and under should be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating. Older kids without an adult should be in groups of three or more.

· Create a Route – Only trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods and at houses with porch lights on. Be aware of and avoid the addresses of local sex offenders.

· Street Smart – Walk only on sidewalks, and cross streets only at crosswalks or corners. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing to help prevent accidents. Take extra caution with costume masks, as they greatly reduce a child’s ability to see their surroundings.

· High Visibility – Carry glow sticks or flashlights when out after dark, and avoid wearing dark-colored costumes or those that aren’t reflective.

· Treat Smart – Check your kids’ candy! The CDC Halloween Safety Guide highly recommends throwing away any unwrapped or unsealed pieces.

2. Safety Tips for Gun Owners

· It’s not the smartest idea to include weapons—toys or otherwise—in costumes. On a night when violent crime is up and tons of people are wearing spooky costumes, it’s best to leave weapons where they belong—with their responsible owners.

· If you want to carry while trick-or-treating with your kids, it would be wise to carry concealed. If you’re handing out candy at home, store your guns safely (either out of sight and reach of children or holstered). As always, make sure you follow state and federal law!

3. Safety Tips for Adults

· Drive Carefully – Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street. Avoid distractions like phones or food so you can be ready to stop quickly. (But it’s best to avoid driving after dark on Halloween if you can.)

· Clear the Way – Clear your front steps, driveway, and lawn of any potential safety hazards. If any injuries happen on your property, you could be held liable!

· Leave a Light On – If you leave the house, keep a few visible lights on inside to discourage criminals. However, leave your porch light off to let trick-or-treaters know you aren’t giving out candy!

· Verify Insurance – Are you turning your home into a neighborhood haunted house? Are you charging admission? Make sure to check your local laws and verify your homeowner’s insurance coverage! It could be considered a business activity, and accidents or injuries typically are not covered. (You should also verify your self-defense insurance coverage!)

· Go Flameless – Use electric lights in your jack-o-lanterns and other décor. House fires are one of the more common accidents reported by homeowners on Halloween.

4. Safety Tips for Pets

· Safely Confine – The sights, sounds, and numerous visitors on Halloween can be overwhelming for pets, and this can cause them to act aggressively or even run away.

· No Candy – Keep the spooky decorations and yummy candy out of reach. If you didn’t already know, chocolate could be lethal to pets!

· Supervised Costumes – Despite what you might see on the internet, pets don’t typically like to be dressed in Halloween costumes. If left unsupervised, they could end up hurting themselves or someone else, or even escape and get lost.

5. Situational Awareness

There’s nothing wrong with a good scare on Halloween, but you shouldn’t have to fear for your safety or your children’s. One of the best things you can do to help ensure you aren’t the victim of a crime on Halloween is to be situationally aware. What is situational awareness?

· It’s the practice of being observant of your environment and the activities going on around you. 

· It means being aware of the groups trick-or-treating near yours.

· It means paying attention to who’s serving you drinks at the costume party or how the drivers around you are driving.

· Situational awareness for a gun owner means always knowing where your firearm is and regularly checking if it’s still secured.

Have a Safe Halloween: Prepare for the Worst

While taking charge of your own safety and deciding you don’t want to become a victim IS the essential first step of your self-preparedness journey, you need to be prepared for all that could happen before, during, and after a life-threatening situation. This means staying educated and informed on what self-defense rights you have during Halloween activities and what rights you don’t have. It also means having proper self-defense training and knowing how to avoid altercations whenever possible, especially on dangerous nights. After all, an educated self-defender is a responsible self-defender!
