The Flipper is an extremely versatile blade, ideal for use around the house, on the jobsite, and everyday carry. TRUE’S Flipper knife provides instant, one-handed access to a quality blade. The knife features a ball bearing folder mechanism that allows the sharp 3” 8Cr13MoV drop point, stainless steel blade to effortlessly move from a folded to a locked position. It is a great system for fast, one-handed deployability with little to no effort. There is no side deployment pin but a pyramid-style finger flipper at the top of the blade spine. With practice, it can be deployed similarly to a spring-assisted knife with only a flight flick of the wrist.

Being 0.75” deep this knife design fits easily inside a pocket with a deep carry clip position. It is both concealable and quick to remove from a pocket when needed. Combining these two features makes this an outstanding daily carry knife. A black oxide finish also mutes the metal making it blend well to dark clothing – like jeans – and hiding potential dirt stuck to the blade or scales.

The scales themselves are G10 and do house the liner locking mechanism. Set within the scales is a lanyard loop to affix a variety of lanyard or safety devices of choice. Beyond the aesthetic design is the practical texturing of the G10. Similar to the checkering of a gunstock, the scales feature a deep but subtle texture for grip retention and comfort. This reduces the potential slippage when using the knife around various environmental factors like rain or oil.

SHOT SHOW 2022 Industry Day – Walther Arms

No Industry Day would be complete without visiting the Walther Arms folks. Walther has built a storied global reputation for producing extreme quality firearms of exceptional ergonomics and trigger. The Walther trigger is the trigger everyone wishes they could emulate. I’ve been looking forward to shooting the company’s latest offering, the PDP, since it was introduced in 2021. I’ll take the liberty to say that Walther timed it as they planned to retire the PPQ line. I often found myself wondering why anyone would replace the PPQ line of exceptional pistols, and the only logical reason I could come up with is that the new PDP replacement is even better. I answered that question at this year’s Industry Day when I got a chance to shoot this magnificent pistol. Everything was as good as the PPQ with many improvements: grip angle, grip texture, trigger, backstraps, slide cutout for red dot sights and very manly slide serrations. If you’re not familiar with the PDP, shoot one; you don’t need to be a SOF operator simply hold one and experience synergy. The PDP is available in several colors and full-size or compact versions

Vortex Optics selected by U.S. Army to produce Next Generation Squad Weapons – Fire Control

BARNEVELD, Wis. – American, family-owned Vortex Optics was selected by the U.S. Army to produce and deliver up to 250,000 Next Generation Squad Weapons – Fire Control (NGSW-FC) systems over a 10-year production period, beginning in 2022.
The Vortex Optics NGSW-FC, dubbed the XM157, was designed and built with the needs of the current and future warfighter in mind. The XM157 – invented, designed and engineered entirely in-house at Vortex® Headquarters – is a Low Powered Variable Optic (LPVO) with a display overlay, Laser Rangefinder (LRF), ballistic solver, environmental sensors, aiming lasers, digital compass, and wireless communication to provide for seamless connectivity on the battlefield.
The XM157 is built around a 1-8×30 LPVO featuring a glass-etched reticle on lenses made entirely in the U.S. The XM157 weighs less than many traditional LPVOs with current weapon mounted LRFs and associated mounts and enables America’s servicemen and women to engage threats quickly and effectively.
With an integrated picatinny base that houses the Vortex® Active Reticle® system, the XM157 injects a digitally displayed image into the first focal plane of the optic and allows for intuitive displays to support ballistic drops, reticle shapes and sizes, and additional modes to display way points, identified threats, and fields of fire.
To account for a rapidly evolving battlefield and a broad range of climates and weather conditions, the optic withstood rigorous drop-testing, extreme hot and cold environments, immersion testing, and tens of thousands of rounds of live-fire testing.
With a clear focus on ease of use, the combined technology enables the XM157 to range a target, send the information to an on-board ballistic solver, gather atmospheric information, and display an illuminated Active Reticle® corrected aimpoint with wind holds in the user’s sight picture, all in tenths of a second. To provide for flexibility in the field, the XM157 can be controlled via an on-board keypad or a detachable remote.
As the production period begins, Vortex® will leverage a talented collective of American aerospace machine shops and American lens manufacturers to supply components to be assembled entirely at Vortex® Headquarters in Barneveld, Wis.

RUBOX BALLISTIC SYSTEMS is a Polish company that produces Active Rubber Ballistic Blocks and Ballistic Granulate. The Active Rubber Blocks are easily transportable and can be readily assembled to construct a shoothouse or duplicate a tactical environment based on intelligence reports. Using the RUBOX products, operators can plan and practice tactical assaults without the need to build plywood structures.or sandbags.

The blocks are then filled with their ballistic granulate to create a bullet proof training environment. The granulate is a specially developed mineral mixture which insures the total lose of bullet kinetic energy. The temperature caused by the stopping of the bullets is also absorbed. Finally it is possible to separate bullet waste from the rest of the granulate. The granulate is also humidity and temperature resistant.

The RUBOX System facilitates the customization of training for military and law enforce where access to training facilities, especially in metropolitan areas, may be difficult to obtain.

SHOT SHOW 2022 – Magpul x Maztech X4 System

Magpul and Maztech Industries are collaborating to develop and begin commercial sales of the X4 System, so what is an X4 system. Simply stated, it’s a system of integrated sensors that interact with your weapons system and its low power variable magnification optic to provide an automatic firing solution. At the present time, Magpul is expected to provide the magazine, grip and trigger guard that will supply a rounds remaining information while Maztech will deliver the X4 system. The X4 utilizes the user supplied variable power optic in both 30mm or 34mm and it’s expected to be available Q4 of 2022, which seems somewhat ambitious. The Magpul / Maztech partnership has some interesting aspirations for the X4 System, but to quote a hackneyed cliché, the proof is in the pudding. One thing is certain, the future is at hand.

The standard SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is expected to ship in late January, while the ACSS Pegasus variant and SLx Flip-to-Side Mount are both expected in mid-February.

The SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is an exciting approach at optical magnifiers, combining high clarity 3x magnification with a miniaturized body and a built-in ranging reticle. Weighing only 5.3 oz, the SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is a miniaturized, lightweight magnifier that extends the effective range of a red dot sight or 1x prism scope. The 22nd Annual S&ET Conference planning team continues to monitor the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation as the health of our event participants, members, and partners remains our top priority. We are committed to following the guidelines and precautions as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Attendees can expect to see the following at NDIA events:

PROOF OF VACCINATION: All attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination or proof of negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of badge pick up. Details for securely providing documentation will be provided on the event website.
MASKS: Fully vaccinated attendees are encouraged to wear face masks but, in accordance with CDC guidance, may make that choice for themselves. If you are not fully vaccinated, you are required to wear a face mask in public places.
WAIVER: All registrants are required to sign the COVID-19 waiver during the online registration process. Attendees may disclose their vaccination status at the time of signing.

History of SB21-078, the “Isabella Joy Thallas Act”

In 2020, state representatives of the Colorado Legislature proposed HB20-1356. This bill would have required firearm owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within 48 hours of discovering that their firearm was missing. However, the progress of that bill was derailed by the pandemic as government offices shut down across the state.

Shortly after, in June 2020, a gunman used a stolen firearm to fatally shoot Isabella Thallas and severely injure her boyfriend in downtown Denver. This tragic event reignited the debate regarding mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms. Upon resuming hearings in early 2021, the Colorado Legislature wasted no time in proposing a similar bill, SB21-078.

Though hotly contested through the legislative process, SB21-078 (officially the “Isabella Joy Thallas Act”) was passed and signed into law by Governor Jared Polis on April 19, 2021, and became effective on September 7, 2021. Before the passage of SB21-078, there were no mandatory reporting requirements related to lost or stolen firearms under Colorado law. This new Colorado law can be found in Colorado Revised Statutes Section 18-12-113.

IT’S 2022 AND TIME FOR OUR FIRST SHOOT THE SHIT OF THE YEAR!

I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and New Year celebration. How are you holding up under the pressure of COVID and it’s variants? Don’t let it get you down nor concern yourself by what you hear or see on social media. The best thing you can do to relieve that pressure is stop listening to social media and all the pundits. The vaccine won’t keep you from contracting COVID or keep you from spreading it, but it will keep you from getting seriously ill from it. Talk it over with your primary care physician and get vaccinated.

Since this is our first shoot the shit for 2022, I’ll kick it off with a bit of cultural awareness.

In case you were unaware, the Chinese New Year kicks off 1 February 2022 and it’s the Year of the Tiger. So, if you’re Chinese, let me wish you a Happy New Year!

The Tiger is known as the king of all beasts in China. The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of strength, exorcising evils, and braveness. Many Chinese kids wear hats or shoes with a tiger image for good luck. The Tiger ranks third among the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The 12 zodiac animals are, in order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each year is related to an animal sign according to a 12-year-cycle. Man I could go for some DimSum!

For those of you new to the site, a shoot the shit is a social interaction during which any topic is discussed. Participants don’t need to know anything about the topic, are free to make any unsupported statement, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject. Regular shoot the shits with friends, coworkers or family members will keep you out of a therapist’s office saving you $150+ per hour. Moving right along.

I read regularly and ran across this New York Times headline: The United States plans to arrange alternative fuel sources for Europe, in case Russia cuts off gas and crude oil supplies., Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

I looked at it and thought, what does Germany use for power? Well they use crude, gas and nuclear power, although they’re shutting down three nuclear power plants. So what the hell is an alternative fuel source the Germans could use, bottled flatulence? What they were trying to suggest is that whatever the Russians cutoff will be supplied by the U.S.!

A quick Shot Show 2022 story

As always it was a great event and NSSF deserves a great deal of credit. This year was the maiden voyage of Caesar’s Forum, which increased total exhibition space to just about 800,000 square feet, it was very well laid-out. If you’re planning on exhibiting at the 2023 SHOT SHOW the Caesar’s Forum is very nice space. This year, many of the major exhibitors did not attend over concerns about COVID and employee safety. It wasn’t uncommon to see signs and other spirited displays like those below. Several of the exhibitors who attended were running thin on booth staff.

Many in our industry manufacture product that require the use of semiconductors so I want to call your attention to a recent report from the Department of Commerce.

U.S. Department of Commerce released the results from the Risks in the Semiconductor Supply Chain Request for Information (RFI) issued in Sept. 2021. Key findings from the report provided data-driven information about the depths of the semiconductor shortage and underscored the need for the President’s proposed $52 billion in domestic semiconductor production.

Demand for semiconductors is as much as 17 percent higher in 2021 than it was in 2019, and consumers aren’t seeing commensurate increases in the available supply.
The majority of semiconductor manufacturing facilities are operating at or above 90 percent utilization, meaning there is limited additional supply to bring online without building new facilities.
Bottlenecks are most concentrated in a specific semiconductor inputs and applications, including legacy logic chips (used in automobiles, medical devices, and other products), analog chips (used in power management, image sensors, and radio frequency), and optoelectronics chips (including for sensors and switches).
The main bottleneck that respondents identified is the need for additional fab capacity. Additional bottlenecks that respondents identified include a lack of raw material inputs for both semiconductors and the other components paired with semiconductors to assemble sub-parts for electric devices.

The RFI asked all parts of the semiconductor supply chain – producers, consumers, and intermediaries – to voluntarily share information about inventories, demand, and delivery dynamics.

The results of the RFI are included in a report and blog released by the Department of Commerce.

The takeaway from this report is plan your purchases well in advance and in quantities that support your manufacturing and sales forcasts. You can forget Just In Time manufacturing if you rely on semiconductors, at least until we get our manufacturing capacity revved up.

SHOT SHOW 2022 INDUSTRY DAY BARRETT MRAD MK22

I made a trip to the Long-Range exhibits at the range for an opportunity to fire the amazing Barrett MRAD (Multi-role Adaptive Design) MK22. This rifle is a multicaliber user configurable platform that has been adopted by USSOCOM, Army and Marine Corps. The modularity of this rifle is noteworthy and extremely well thought out. During my visit, I fired the .300 Norma Magnum. The folding stock tucks away neatly and is jumpable.

In 2019, the U.S. Special Operations Command awarded Barrett Manufacturing a $50,000,000 contract, ordering the Barrett MRAD chambered in .338 Norma Magnum for the Advanced Sniper Rifle project as the MK22 ASR. The issued rifle kit includes swappable barrels and bolts chambered in .308 Winchester, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum. As part of their fiscal year 2021 budget requests, both the Army and Marine Corps included requests to adopt the MRAD as their primary sniper systems.

The Barrett MK22 is one of the best sniper platforms available and it was a real treat to send a few rounds downrange.
