Firearms investigators have long worked under a simple assumption: once a round is fired, any fingerprint left on the cartridge case is effectively destroyed. Heat, pressure, and friction inside the chamber tend to burn away the organic residues that conventional methods rely on, leaving analysts with little more than tool-mark traces to link evidence back to a weapon. A new technique developed at Maynooth University in Ireland suggests this limitation may not be permanent.

The research team has demonstrated an electrochemical process capable of revealing clear fingerprint patterns on spent brass casings within seconds. Instead of depending on sweat or skin oils, the method uses the fingerprint’s physical imprint as a protective mask. When a low voltage is applied, a thin metallic coating forms only on the exposed areas of the brass surface, leaving the ridge pattern untouched and creating a sharp, high-contrast negative image.

According to Interesting Engineering, this distinction is important because organic residues often evaporate or degrade during firing, while the physical deformation caused by a fingerprint can survive. Early trials show the technique works even on casings that have undergone significant thermal stress, offering investigators an opportunity to link ammunition not just to a firearm, but to a person — a connection previously considered unattainable after discharge.

For homeland security, law enforcement, and counterterrorism units, the ability to recover prints from fired casings could provide a new layer of intelligence in cases involving organized crime, firearms trafficking, or improvised weapons. Ammunition from shootings or attacks often appears without the firearm itself; any tool that strengthens the evidentiary chain can significantly improve investigative outcomes.

The researchers caution that the method is still under development. Surface corrosion, extreme heat exposure, and variations in metal type can all affect results. Stainless steel and aluminum remain more challenging than brass, and long environmental exposure reduces reliability. Before any courtroom use, the technique will require extensive validation, blind testing, and inter-laboratory replication.

Despite these limitations, the approach holds promise beyond ammunition. The same principles could apply to knives, explosive fragments, or other conductive materials exposed to heat. If broader testing confirms its reliability, this electrochemical process may become a valuable addition to the forensic toolkit — offering answers in cases where traditional methods fall short.

The research was published in the Forensic Chemistry Journal.

NICS Checks Top 530,000 for ‘Black Friday’ Week

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, revealed that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) completed 530,156 background checks related to firearms for the week leading up to, and including, “Black Friday,” one of the busiest shopping days of the year. That figure is down from 2024’s total of 613,380 for the same time period. The 2025 total is a 13.6 percent decrease from the 2024 figure.

NICS completed 165,183 background checks on “Black Friday” alone. The figure approximates firearm sales at retail on that day, although it also includes background checks for other purposes related to firearms such as approvals for concealed carry permits. NSSF will later this week release its Adjusted NICS figures for November reflecting only those background checks related to the sale of a firearm at retail.

NSSF has worked with firearm retailers to spread out special sales offers to customers throughout the week leading up to “Black Friday” so as not to overwhelm FBI NICS on a single day, which can result in longer than normal wait times.

“The background checks reported by the FBI are in keeping with the trends NSSF has seen throughout the year. While the overall trends are still coming off the peaks experienced in recent years, firearm sales remain consistently strong,” explained Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “These figures tell us that there is a continued strong appetite for lawful firearm ownership by law-abiding Americans and that firearm manufacturers across the country continue to deliver the quality firearms our customers have come to expect.”

Annual background check data shows that firearm sales will typically rise during the final months of the year coinciding with hunting seasons and holiday sales.

SHELTON, Conn. — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute® (SAAMI®) will present its 2026 Ballistics Conference September 15–17 in Baltimore.

The event will include a two-day technical seminar and training course plus a range day for product demonstrations and a facility tour of the testing laboratories at U.S. Element Space & Defense.

This will be the sixth biennial SAAMI Ballistics Conference. The conference is designed to serve as a training workshop and discussion forum addressing a range of topics relevant to small arms ammunition design, ballistic laboratory/test facility operations, methods and related equipment and materials.

The conference will be of special interest to small arms ballistic laboratory technicians, ammunition and firearm designers and test engineers, test facility managers and civilians, law enforcement and military who utilize the SAAMI standards in the manufacture or qualification of ammunition and firearms.



The SAAMI Ballistics Conference will run September 15–16 at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court located in Baltimore’s scenic inner harbor. An optional site visit is scheduled for September 17 at a local range to demonstrate ballistic test equipment, followed by a visit to the testing laboratories of U.S. Element Space & Defense in Belcamp, Maryland.

The conference is still being planned, but topics will include:

  • PCB Ballistic Pressure Sensor User’s Training and Practical Workshop.
  • Propellants — the science, selection and use considerations.
  • Legal considerations of test recordkeeping.

SAAMI strives to keep its ballistics conferences pertinent to the sporting arms and ammunition and firearm manufacturing community. Artificial intelligence systems are increasingly valuable, and increasingly targeted. A new study from North Carolina State University presents the first working defense mechanism capable of protecting AI models from cryptanalytic attacks, which is a method hackers use to mathematically extract the parameters that define how an AI system operates.

Unlike conventional hacking, which exploits software vulnerabilities, cryptanalytic attacks work like digital espionage through observation. By feeding an AI model various inputs and analyzing its outputs, attackers can reverse-engineer its internal parameters — effectively cloning the system without needing direct access to its code or servers. For companies, defense agencies, and research institutions that rely on proprietary algorithms, this poses a serious security risk.

According to TechXplore, the new approach focuses on the architecture of neural networks — the layered structures that allow AI systems to process information. The researchers discovered that these attacks rely on differences between neurons within a layer. The more varied those neurons are, the easier it is to identify the mathematical relationships that define the network.

To block that process, the team developed a method of training neural networks so that neurons in the same layer behave more similarly. This creates what they call a “barrier of similarity,” preventing attackers from isolating distinct neuron patterns without affecting the model’s normal function. In testing, models retrained with this defense showed less than a 1% change in accuracy but became resistant to extraction attempts that had previously succeeded within hours. The researchers also introduced a framework for measuring how resistant a model is to such attacks. This allows organizations to assess their systems’ vulnerability without running lengthy simulations.

For defense and national security, the implications are significant. AI increasingly underpins mission-critical systems — from intelligence analysis and autonomous platforms to cybersecurity operations. Protecting those algorithms from being copied or reverse-engineered is essential for maintaining strategic advantage and safeguarding sensitive data.

While this new defense is still in the research stage, it highlights a growing recognition that artificial intelligence needs its own form of cybersecurity. As AI systems become integral to critical infrastructure, finance, defense, and everyday services, protecting their core algorithms will be as important as safeguarding the data they use. The work signals the beginning of a new era in digital protection — one where securing the intelligence behind the machine is just as vital as securing the networks that run it.
