On September 11, 2001, 2,977 lives were lost in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. Four coordinated hijackings targeting the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, altered the trajectory of modern history in a matter of hours.

Why We Remember

Remembrance on September 11 serves two essential functions: honoring the fallen and affirming shared humanity. Every year, annual ceremonies involve the reading of the victims’ names, moments of silence marking key timestamps of the morning, and acts of service nationwide through the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.

By remembering the spirit of solidarity that emerged in the aftermath, future generations carry forward a powerful message: that unity and strength endure long after dark moments pass.
