GA-ASI Completes First Flight of Belgium’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian(r)

GA-ASI Builds Industrial Collaboration Team in Belgium for MQ-9B SkyGuardian | General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.

GA-ASI COMPLETES FIRST FLIGHT OF BELGIUM’S MQ-9B SKYGUARDIAN^®

SAN DIEGO – 25 March 2025 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and the Belgian Ministry of Defence completed the first flight of a new MQ-9B SkyGuardian^® Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) that will be the first SkyGuardian delivered to Belgium as part of a four-aircraft purchase. The flight was based out of GA-ASI’s Desert Horizon Flight Operations Facility in El Mirage, California and took place on February 20, 2025.

First flight is part of a series of ground and flight tests conducted to validate the performance of the Belgian MQ-9B RPA. The objective of the flight was to prove controllability and safe landing of the aircraft. The flight was successful, and the program will move forward with further development flight tests.

“We’re excited to complete the first flight of SkyGuardian for Belgium,” said Chris Dusseault, vice president of MQ-9B in Europe. “Belgium joins the U.K.’s Royal Air Force and will become the second country to take delivery of our MQ-9B in Europe.”

MQ-9B is the world’s most advanced RPAS, delivering exceptionally long endurance and range—with auto takeoff and landing under pole-to-pole SATCOM-only control—and will be able to operate in unsegregated airspace using the GA-ASI-developed Detect and Avoid system. MQ-9B includes the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian^® models, with multiple deliveries made to the U.K.’s Royal Air Force (Protector), as well as orders from Canada, Poland, the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Taiwan, India, and the U.S. Air Force in support of the Special Operations Command. MQ-9B has also supported various U.S. Navy exercises, including Northern Edge, Integrated Battle Problem, and Group Sail.

The Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Belgium also includes two Certifiable Ground Control Stations (CGCS).

The rise of AI agents, like OpenAI’s recently introduced Operator, is revolutionizing productivity by automating tasks such as booking trips or filling out forms. However, these advancements also present a new and potentially dangerous threat to cybersecurity, as they could be exploited by cybercriminals to launch more sophisticated attacks with minimal human intervention.

While large language models (LLMs) have primarily been passive tools, only assisting cybercriminals in low-level tasks, AI agents take automation a step further by allowing users to interact with web pages and execute more complex operations. According to researchers at Symantec, a cybersecurity division of Broadcom, these agents are now actively capable of performing tasks that could be weaponized in cyberattacks.

To demonstrate the risks, Symantec’s threat hunter team conducted an experiment using Operator. This AI agent, launched by OpenAI in January for Pro users, is designed to automate web-based tasks. The researchers tasked Operator with a series of operations typically associated with a cyberattack, including gathering information about an employee and sending phishing emails.

Initially, Operator resisted when prompted to send unsolicited emails, citing privacy concerns. However, when the prompt was adjusted to suggest the target had authorized the actions, Operator proceeded to identify the target’s name and email address, create a PowerShell script to gather system information, and draft a convincing phishing email. While this experiment was relatively simple, the results highlight how AI agents can be used for more complex malicious activities.

As AI agents like Operator become more sophisticated, the potential for abuse grows. While these technologies offer significant benefits for productivity, their misuse could lead to a dramatic increase in cyber threats, making it easier for attackers to carry out advanced operations with minimal effort. As the line between legitimate automation and malicious intent blurs, businesses and cybersecurity professionals will need to stay ahead of these developments, implementing robust safeguards and continuously monitoring for any signs of AI-driven attacks. The growing capabilities of AI agents emphasize the need for a proactive approach to cybersecurity in an increasingly automated world.

NSSF Opens Hunting Heritage Trust Grant Applications

NGOs can apply for $100,000 in support of R3 efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF^®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, has opened the application period for the 2025 Hunting Heritage Trust Grants that offer a total of $100,000 in support for programs that work to expand participation in hunting and the shooting sports.

Qualified non-governmental organizations (NGOs) may apply for a portion of this year’s $100,000 Hunting Heritage Trust Grant total, to be used to support recruitment, retention and reactivation programs, known collectively as R3 efforts. NSSF will place emphasis on programs that focus on increasing participation by attracting new participants and reactivating past participants.

Only project proposals submitted by and in the name of NGOs are eligible for funding. NSSF advises potential applicants to read the application guidelines carefully to fully understand which projects are, and are not, eligible for Hunting Heritage Trust Grant funding.

“We are excited to offer this new round of Hunting Heritage Trust Grants to encourage organizations to expand programs that facilitate participation among diverse groups in target shooting and hunting,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “We’ll be looking to reward programs that address the needs of this growing participant base. If you’ve got a program in mind that meets the grant guidelines, a Hunting Heritage Trust Grant can help elevate your efforts.”

Grant applications must be submitted through the application link provided on the NSSF HHGT webpage no later than 5 p.m. (Eastern time) April 18, 2025. All projects awarded grant funding in 2025 must be completed by February 9, 2026.

BARRETT WELCOMES TNECD ANNOUNCEMENT ON MURFREESBORO DEVELOPMENT

MURFREESBORO, TN – Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. has announced plans for a new state-of-the-art facility set to redefine excellence in weapon systems manufacturing while delivering jobs growth for the region.

The announcement was made formally by the Department of Tennessee Economic and Community Development (TNECD) earlier today.

The $76.4 million campus-style industrial precinct, to be known as the Barrett Manufacturing & Technology Campus (BMTC), will be capable of designing, developing, manufacturing, testing, sustaining and distributing Barrett’s expanding range of world-class products.

It will be constructed on a 170-acre greenfield site in the company’s Murfreesboro TN heartland and less than a mile from the current base at which Barrett has become a global leader.

The expansion will double the Barrett workforce over the next five years and enable the company to meet growing worldwide demand for its commercial and defense products.

The facility is planned to open in early 2027.

The announcement was made by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter and Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc.

“We thank the Department of Tennessee Economic and Community Development for their vision and for their shared enthusiasm in this growth opportunity in our State,” Barrett CEO Bryan James said.

“This is a significant investment in growing Barrett’s capabilities for the future while underscoring our long-term commitment to the company’s Murfreesboro, Tennessee heartland.

“The BMTC will be an internationally recognized headquarters of firearms excellence, advancing our manufacturing and research capabilities as well as revolutionizing our product offerings.”

Mr. Rob Nioa, the CEO of Barrett Firearms’ parent company NIOA Group, said: “We are thrilled to announce the expansion of Barrett’s operations in Murfreesboro and look forward to the positive impact this project will have on the local economy and beyond.

“The BMTC will serve as our primary firearms manufacturing site globally and demonstrates our commitment as a major American manufacturer catering to both the commercial and military markets.”

The BMTC will be capable of designing, developing, manufacturing, testing, sustaining and distributing:

Commercial firearms of all types
Advanced military small arms
Specialist ammunition of various natures

The design focuses on creating a cutting-edge campus-style environment that integrates corporate headquarters, R&D capabilities, manufacturing, secure warehouse and logistics hub.

Stage 1 of the BMTC, with a total floor area of approximately 250,000 square feet, features an on-site cafeteria, multi-use auditorium, conference and training rooms, outdoor meeting areas, and R&D facilities including state-of-the-art testing ranges and laboratory space.

European Military Airworthiness Regulator Approves GA-ASI Application
Approval Will Make Subsequent Certifications Easier

SAN DIEGO – 20 March 2025 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), a world leader in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), has received the prestigious EMAR/FR 145 Maintenance Organization Approval for component maintenance from the French Military Continuing Airworthiness Authority, DSAE. This approval underscores GA-ASI’s commitment to the highest standards of safety, compliance, and operational excellence in military aviation.

The EMAR framework is a set of regulations developed from commercial aerospace standards (FAA/EASA) that are designed to ensure airworthiness for European military aircraft. It establishes a common airworthiness framework recognized by military airworthiness authorities worldwide. EMAR/FR 145 certification authorizes maintenance organizations to perform critical maintenance tasks while ensuring strict adherence to safety, reliability, and documentation requirements.

GA-ASI’s EMAR/FR 145 approval allows the company to issue EMAR Form 1s (Return to Service forms) for components serviced by the approved maintenance organization, confirming the safety and airworthiness of the equipment. This recognition applies to GA-ASI’s maintenance activities at its Poway and Adelanto, California, facilities and covers CAT C (component maintenance) services.

“This approval is a significant achievement for GA-ASI, positioning the company to better serve international customers, especially military users of our MQ-9A and MQ-9B UAS platforms,” said Sam Richardson, GA-ASI vice president of Sustainment. “The ability to leverage the EMAR/FR 145 certification streamlines the company’s processes, reduces costs, and accelerates future airworthiness pursuits, as many future customers will recognize this certification rather than requiring a full, independent certification process.”

By obtaining EMAR/FR 145 approval, GA-ASI further demonstrates its ability to meet the stringent demands of the global defense market. The framework’s widespread recognition ensures that GA-ASI can expand operations and offer high-quality, compliant maintenance services to international customers, ultimately driving company growth in global markets.

This certification offers significant operational and financial benefits for both GA-ASI and its customers. For GA-ASI, the approval reduces future oversight costs by leveraging the DSAE Audit Team’s oversight activities, ensuring a more efficient and cost-effective certification process for future non-French EMAR customers. For customers, the EMAR/FR 145 approval provides a framework recognized internationally, offering a streamlined maintenance certification process. The recognition agreements between EMAR and non-EMAR countries allow future customers to leverage GA-ASI’s French approval, saving time and resources compared to a full certification effort.

BREAKING: DOJ To Reevaluate Position On Suppressors

BREAKING: Following ASA’s call yesterday for the Justice Department to reconsider its stance that suppressors are not arms and therefore not protected by the Second Amendment, the DOJ has requested 30 days to reevaluate its position.

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Suppressor Association General Counsel Michael Williams released the following statement in response to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson’s brief filed in the Fifth Circuit Court’s erroneous ruling that firearm suppressors are not protected by the Second Amendment:

“The Acting U.S. Attorney got this wrong, plain and simple. Suppressors are arms protected under the Second Amendment. We are hopeful that Attorney General Bondi will reconsider the position laid out in this brief and recognize Second Amendment protections for millions of Americans who own and use suppressors for safe exercise of their Second Amendment rights.”

Senate Introduces PARTS Act

WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, March 13th, Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT), joined by seven colleagues in the Senate, introduced the ASA-supported Protecting Americans’ Right to Silence (PARTS) Act. This bipartisan proposal will reform the outdated definition of “firearm silencer” in the Gun Control Act.

“We applaud Senator Sheehy for standing up for the rights of millions of law-abiding gun owners,” said Knox Williams, president and executive director of the American Suppressor Association. “There is serious momentum building behind the movement to make firearm suppressors free and easily accessible for everyone. No one should be forced to cut through bureaucratic red tape just to buy a hearing protection device, and Senator Sheehy has done gun owners a great service by introducing this bill.”

The PARTS Act is co-sponsored by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Pete Ricketts (NE), Ted Budd (R-NC), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jim Justice (R-WV), and John Cornyn (R-TX). Representative August Pfluger (R-TX) introduced the companion bill in the House of Representatives.
