SAAMI Releases Update of Centerfire Rifle Standard

SHELTON, Conn. — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute^®, Inc., (SAAMI^®) is pleased to announce the release of the 2025 update to American National Standard SAAMI Z299.4-2025, Voluntary Industry Performance Standards for Pressure and Velocity of Centerfire Rifle Ammunition for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers.

SAAMI is an accredited standards developer recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

The 2025 American National Standard SAAMI Z299.4-2024 update provides pressure and velocity performance and dimensional characteristics for centerfire rifle sporting ammunition and rifle chambers. Included are procedures and equipment for determining these criteria.

The publication of these standards is a primary part of SAAMI’s mission to establish and maintain standards to ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition and suppressors.

SAAMI American National Standards are periodically updated to ensure they remain current with developments in the industry and to capture new cartridge designs introduced by its member companies.

Following development by SAAMI member companies, the standard is reviewed by independent manufacturers, government agencies, testing laboratories, users and outside experts.

What does the President’s 2A Executive Order Mean?

President Trump Signs Pro-2A Executive Order

Washington, D.C. — On Friday, February 7th, 2025, President Trump signed the first pro-Second Amendment Executive Order in our nation’s history, an action the ASA strongly applauds. This order effectively reverses the unconstitutional firearm restrictions imposed by the Biden administration and directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to conduct a comprehensive review of all executive actions, regulations, guidance, and policies implemented under the previous administration. By March 10th, 2025, the DOJ must present a plan to the President outlining steps to safeguard the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.

This follows a DOJ Memo dated February 5, 2025, by newly confirmed Attorney General Bondi which included the following policy changes regarding ATF resources:

“Shifting ATF Resources. To free resources to address more pressing priorities, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) shall shift resources from its Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement Programs to focus on matters relating to the other priorities set forth herein. No resources shall be diverted from the ATF’s regulatory responsibilities, such as federal firearms licenses and background checks.”[emphasis added]

Of particular importance to ASA is the review’s focus on firearm transfer applications, which explicitly includes Form 4 applications for suppressors. This presents an opportunity for the DOJ and ATF to further reduce suppressor transfer wait times and establish lasting reforms to streamline the process.

Additionally, the order directs a review of the government’s legal positions in ongoing and potential litigation impacting Americans’ Second Amendment rights. This opens the door for the Administration to weigh in on cases such as the ASA-F and Silencer Shop-backed lawsuit challenging Illinois’ suppressor ban. Furthermore, the review includes an examination of firearm and ammunition classifications, providing an avenue to reassess past ATF rulings on suppressor parts that lack logical or legal justification.

The ASA is committed to working directly with the DOJ and the White House to ensure these critical issues remain at the forefront of the administration’s review. We will continue to advocate for meaningful reforms that protect and advance the rights of suppressor owners nationwide.

Armed Women of America Partners with NSSF’s First Shots Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF^®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is pleased to announce that Armed Women of America has become an official partner of NSSF’s First Shots^® program. First Shots is the introductory and refresher target-shooting program made available through host target-shooting ranges across the country.

A non-profit organization, Armed Women of America organizes local groups of women around the country that meet monthly to practice, learn and grow as shooters. The group says it exists to enable women “to be their own self-protectors, creating freedom, peace of mind and confidence in themselves.”

With more than 250 chapters nationwide, Armed Women of America will work with NSSF’s First Shots to reach thousands of new, intermediate and experienced women shooters to help build their marksmanship and firearm safety skills and to enjoy the camaraderie and fun of the shooting sports. Local chapters of the group can be found on its website.

“The partnership between Armed Women of America and First Shots provides the support and expertise that newcomers and novices are seeking when they’re introduced to recreational shooting,” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Member Development. “The partnership also emphasizes firearm safety and the confidence that comes with belonging to a supportive community that enjoys target shooting and training together.

“More Americans want to learn about recreational shooting and owning firearms for personal security. First Shots has been designed to assist them by providing education in the classroom and experience on the firing line,” added Snow.

By providing educational experiences that are safe, fun and memorable, First Shots partners and host ranges are having great success in attracting first-timers, further engaging new gun owners and in reactivating lapsed participants. Surveys show that more than 43 percent of First Shots participants are converted to target-shooting enthusiasts, demonstrating that First Shots is fulfilling a need for providing a supportive environment to those who want to know more about recreational shooting and firearm ownership.

“We are proud to partner with NSSF’s First Shots program, which has introduced thousands of people to recreational shooting and continues to attract participants of all ages. As a dedicated partner of First Shots, Armed Women of America hopes to introduce even more women to the wide world of responsible and safe firearm ownership and the wide world of recreational shooting opportunities for women. We hope more people will discover Armed Women of America, recreational shooting and taking charge of one’s personal security thanks to First Shots,” said Jan Ennenga, AWA Executive Director.

In October of 2022, the Australian Defense Forces selected the SIG SAUER P320 as their new sidearm as part of a program to modernize the ADF’s small arms. The program, known as The Lethality System Project (LAND 159) will equip the ADF with next-generation weapon systems, surveillance and target acquisition equipment, ammunition, and support systems to ensure ADF ground combatants maintain a capability advantage over potential adversaries to 2030 and beyond.

For the Australian Defense Forces, the SIG Special Weapons Group utilized a P320 variant similar to the U.S. Military’s M18. This edition of the P320 has been designated SIGP320978 and represents the first offering in the SIG Special Weapons Group Program. Galco’s High Ready™ chest holster system is the latest in an expanding line of torso-worn hunting and outdoor holsters.

The High Ready is ideal for comfortably carrying a large-frame handgun when hunting, fishing, camping or hiking in bear country. Positioning on the chest keeps the handgun clear of gear carried near the waistline or on the back and allows rifle carry on either shoulder. It also helps keep the handgun dry when wading, and is a great choice for riding, whether on an ATV or horseback.

The High Ready’s outstanding comfort level comes from three major design features:

The first is its innovative backing plate, composed of a ballistic nylon front over a closed cell foam body. The back portion of the plate that rides against the wearer’s chest is lined with Galco’s Comfort Cloth™, an Adaptive Performance Mesh™ that provides padding and moisture wicking.

Secondly, the unique harness construction that allows the holster to pivot at three independent attachment points, maximizing freedom of movement and minimizing restriction. Three quickly-operated, highly secure metal side-release buckles attach the holster component to the harness straps at the pivot points.

Lastly, 2” wide tubular webbing harness straps distribute the weight of a heavy handgun for maximum comfort. One strap goes over either shoulder, while the second wraps around the torso for highly effective weight distribution.

The rigid, open-top Kydex holster pocket offers full slide coverage, provides fast draw and easy holstering, and facilitates a full firing grip. The holster pocket on semiauto versions accommodates most carry-style red dot sights.
