Israeli Weapon Industries (IWI) has just announced its 5.45 mm conversion kit for the X95 rifle. This comes as good news to many of the Eastern European countries still awash in 5.45 ammunition from the Soviet Era. The addition of the new conversion kit makes the X95 assault rifle the most versatile weapon platform on the market – supporting 5.45, 5.56 and 9 mm calibers. The X95 is ideal for CQC/CQB, security and urban settings; unlike many of its competitors, the X95’s bullpup design does not sacrifice barrel length hence accuracy and lethality.

Senator Arlen Specter Dies At 82
I was sadden to hear of Arlen Specter’s passing today. He died at age 82, at his home, in Pennsylvania, from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
I admired him as a man, and as an elected official. He served the United States of America and the people of the State of Pennsylvania diligently and with honor for nearly 30 years. Senator Specter never backed down from a fight and he was a key figure in many divisive battles. Today, the world has lost a kind man and a great leader. His passing is most certainly a loss to us all; as it is to his family.
We extended our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family, and to his friends and colleagues, of many years, in the U.S. Senate. May you rest in peace Arlen!
RIA Novosti Discloses Ukranian Combat Dolphin Program
This past Thursday RIA Novosti reported that the Ukrainian navy has restarted training combat dolphins. The highly intelligent marine mammals will undergo counter-combat swimmer and mine detection training, according to an undisclosed military source in the Ukrainian naval port of Sevastopol. The unnamed source explains:
“Ten dolphins are now being trained for special tasks in the Ukrainian state oceanarium, and the Ukrainian military are regularly training the animals for detecting things on the seabed…”
“We are now planning training exercises for counter-combat swimmer tasks in order to defend ships in port and on raids,”
Commenting on several trial runs, the Ukranian military sources goes on to say:
“The mission was successfully carried out. Our dolphins found the items and attached devices to them which were fixed on their heads, after which a buoy on it was sent to the surface to mark it,”
Other than San Diego NSC the Ukrainian dolphin base is one of two in the world.
EADS-BAE Merger Falls Apart.
A history making merger that could have created an aerospace giant on par with Boeing has collapsed amidst bickering and finger pointing between the U.K., France and Germany.
Although there were investor concerns about maximization of shareholder value, the inclination is to suggest the German government had concerns about job losses and plant closures in Bavaria, where elections are due next year.
Investors are not happy and we may see a change in management at the highest levels.

EADS – BAE Merger Still Alive!
A German news agency, citing sources close to the merger negotiations, has alleged that further talks would not move forward. Opposition by member nations being one principal reason(s).
EADS has categorically denied the report and is moving forward with the £28 billion ($45 B) deal, which when consummated would create and aerospace giant on par with Boeing.
We cannot confirm the accuracy of both assertions; however, both companies must declare their intentions to proceed by tomorrow, as set by the UK Takeover Panel.

Looking For A Good Smoke?
The Habano is a product of the Perdomo Farms in Nicaragua. The filler is comprised of tobaccos selected from three different growing regions: Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa. The wrapper is a very fine Corojo.
This is a cigar that has the many colors of a woman; however, the Corojo flavor dominates the overall smoking experience. The cigar itself is well packaged with a fairly consistent draw throughout the smoke.
Depending on where you look, they run about $90 to $125 per box and singles can be had for right around $5.50.

How The Economy Got Here…
By: Sal Palma
This will be my last piece under the Election Year BS topic. I felt it was important and it has received little attention in the media who chooses to focus on Romney’s 47% and Obama’s redistribution of wealth.
The economy, moves in cycles. It is an almost rhythmic movement that some say is predictable. It has its ups and it downs; we know this to be historically correct. The sharp downturn of 2008 was triggered by a downward movement in the business cycle but its severity is attributable to much more complex factors.
You’ve all heard the term leverage used but do you understand it? Leverage refers to borrowing. For example, if you have $200,000 and you buy a house for $200,000, you have no debt and a $200,000 asset. In a normal market, you can expect your home to appreciate at an annual compounded rate of 6% per year – that will vary market to market. After the first year in your new home, you can reasonably expect it to have a fair market value of $212,000. Your asset appreciated by $12,000.
Now lets take a look at what leverage does. You have $200,000 but you decide to purchase a $600,000 home. You put down your $200,000 and borrow $400,000 to purchase an asset worth $600,000. At the end of your first year, your asset is worth $636,000. Your asset appreciated by $36,000 in the first year. As long as your job remains secure with a reliable income stream, leveraging allows you to amplify your earnings. However, leveraging also has an amplifying effect in a downward direction when the economy takes a downturn.
So why is it that we’ve had such a terrible time coming out of this recession. To understand that, we need to go back in time.
So, let’s go back to the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, which is when the real estate market started heating up; by heating up I mean excess demand with a lagging supply that resulted in what’s been called the housing bubble. When we refer to the housing bubble we mean that the housing market was dysfunctional; resulting in housing prices rising at a much higher rate than a normal market appreciation of 6% per annum. Why do bubbles occur?
Bubbles occur when demand increases sharply aggressively leading supply. You’ve heard of a stock market bubble. Quite often stock prices rise simply because there are vast sums of cash sitting idle that needs to be invested. When that money jumps into the market, stock prices rise for no other reason than the demand for stock exceeds the supply. It has no bearing on the economic health or viability of the market. It’s simply money jumping into the market. Some see it as an indicator that investors are optimistic about the markets but that is not the complete picture.
So, where did this demand for housing come from? The short answer is mortgage lenders made up of private investment firms, and retail and commercial banks.
Every time a lender writes a mortgage, they add to the asset side of their balance sheet. When the asset side of the balance sheet increases, the earnings potential for that institution also increases and, in the absence of proper financial disclosure, the markets reward the increased earning potential by bidding the institution’s share prices higher.
Lenders generally do not keep mortgages on the books for the life of the mortgage. They bundle them and sell the bundle on the secondary markets. The secondary market, which in many cases are firms owned by the lenders, leverage the purchases. That is they borrowed money so they can purchase more and larger bundles; many times, the borrowing is facilitated by the institutions that own them. You can begin to see a spiraling effect. The more banks lend the higher the stock price, the more and larger bundles the secondary market buys and the more the secondary markets leverage, etc. A large percentage of the bundles are sold to Fanny and Freddy as well as international investors. It became in every sense of the word a feeding frenzy!
I was at a Starbuck’s a number of years ago and inadvertently sat through a sales pitch to a young couple from a realtor. What the realtor was attempting to do, was to have the couple make an offer on a higher priced home. The essence of the sales pitch was this. I can get you together with a mortgage broker that can structure your loan so that in the first 18 months you’d be paying what you can afford. After 18 months, your income will rise and you can afford the higher mortgage payments; besides, even if you can’t afford the mortgage payments you can sell your house on the market and make 30K. Unbelievable!
What is more astonishing, is that lenders were knowingly booking high risk loans without disclosing the higher risk on their financial statements. The result was that their stock prices kept going up and up. To give you an example of just how bad things got, lenders were running ads in local markets offering loans of up to 125% of the appraised property value.
Lenders were adding huge amounts of risk to their loan portfolios, which was subsequently bought by investment banks in the secondary markets and Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. Regrettably, no one had the integrity to disclose, on their financial statements, they were taking on large amounts of risks. Disclosure, by the way, is required under G.A.A.P. (Generally Accepted Accounting Principals) and under various regulations by the S.E.C. (Securities and Exchange Commission) for publically traded companies. Not only was there no disclosure by lenders, there was no disclosure by the firms comprising the secondary markets.
This unrestrained bonanza in lending created the housing bubble. It was common place to see homes appreciating in value by 20% per year or more, which sparked residential housing speculation making matters even worse. Individuals were taking the equity out of their homes to buy second homes, cars, add a room, vacations you name it. The economic growth that we saw, and politicians like taking credit for, was fueled by the housing bubble, which by any measure was unsustainable.
Suddenly, a downturn in the business cycle kicked in and folks began to get laid off. Unable to meet the mortgage payment, the entire house of cards collapses. Investors discover that housing prices are now half of what they used to be and loans are going bad, developers are going bankrupt and financial firms have inadequate reserves ( we call this liquidity) to weather the storm – a storm created by them, I might add.
When liquidity dried up, the government had to step in to keep banks from collapsing. So as much as I hate to say this, bailouts were indeed necessary. With lending at a halt, consumer spending declined, businesses were unable to finance plant and equipment and the economy came to a grinding halt.
To provide you with some dimension of the severity of the problem, in 2008-2009 there was a total of $30 trillion dollars of uncollateralized debt floating about. Much of this was loans to Wall Street firms, hedge funds and speculators who leveraged their way to huge profits virtually undetected and therefore unregulated.
Going into this election and the Presidential debates, the question you need to ask of yourself, and your elected officials is, why has the economy been unresponsive to all the stimulus. I’ll give you what I think the correct answers are.
-
Banks are still not lending to consumers and small businesses. They would rather lend to the investment banks they own or have interest in and to global corporations who are now borrowing at historically low interest rates.
-
The United States has lost control of its manufacturing base. We no longer have a steel industry, we no longer have a garment industry, we no longer have a consumer electronics industry. Because virtually everything we come in contact with is made in China, India or Indonesia, the benefits of domestic stimulus programs don’t remain in the U.S. Instead, they flow, at an increasing rate, to China, India and Indonesia. If we fail to gain control of our manufacturing, China will be able to exercise monopoly pricing power on manufactured goods, in the near future. This means that what used to be inexpensive Chinese parts and sub-assemblies will become expensive. We are beginning to see signs of that in the garment industry.
-
There is still a very large amount of risk in our financial sector. There is an urgent need to break up the banks. If you think we’re out of the woods you’re dreaming and another major collapse could be the one that does us in. We need to do everything possible to make banking a competitive industry. What we have today is an oligopoly with price fixing along the lines of fees that bare no relationship to business risk. It is out of hand!
-
Leveraged speculation, especially in oil, fuels and other commodities remains high.
-
We need to have fiscal policy that rewards investing in business creation so that investing in new business provides an after tax return superior to competing alternatives.
Necessity Is The Mother of Invention
This Al Jazeera video shows a Syrian rebel’s weapon building facility. In the absence of direct foreign assistance, local talent is directed at building the tools that allow them to continue the fight. To quote a hackneyed cliche’ “…necessity is the mother of invention…”
Fog Horn sees what’s going on in Syria as a missed opportunity for U.S. interests in the region; doing nothing has a sizable opportunity cost. Something to think about!
Princeton Tec Brings Manufacturing Back Home
The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story about one of our industry partners, Princeton Tec. We at FOG HORN are intimately familiar with their tactical line of personal lighting and we recommend it highly when the opportunity presents itself.
Recently, they were recognized by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis for taking a lead in the rebirth of U.S. Manufacturing. We would like to acknowledge them for being astute enough to recognize that the dollars saved from outsourcing have huge hidden costs such as intellectual property rights, quality control, comparative advantages through technology and innovation.
We applaud Princeton Tec, its management team and all of its employees for a decision that will bear fruit as you move forward.
DRD Tactical™ Paratus
When we initially discovered plans by US Palm to design and deliver a brake-down AK47, we advised our readers that more was on the way. The need for compact, low or no signature platforms has been broadly ignored. You can expect that condition to change.
The Paratus was developed for the Clandestine Break-Down Rifle (CSR) request listed on an open announcement by Joint & Special Operations Program (JSOP).
The requirements as articulated by the CTTSO; under the authority of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict and Interdependent Capabilities (ASD (SO/LIC&IC))
“The CSR shall be bolt-action or semi-automatic and magazine fed using five and ten round magazines,” the announcement reads. “The CSR barrel shall not exceed an overall length of 14.5 inches. The muzzle brake or suppressor is in addition to this 14.5-inch limit. The barrel shall have standard quick-disconnect or threaded connections for receiving suppressors. If a threaded suppressor is offered, the system shall include a thread guard. The barrel shall be removable and installable by the operator in the field. If tools are needed for installation they shall be simple and provided with the system. After each instance of barrel installation, the rifle shall be accurate to 1 minute-of-angle (MOA) or better. The CSR shall have a lightweight, folding stock and a MIL-STD-1913 rail system at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions of the rifle. The 12 o’clock (top) rail shall have a 15 or 20 MOA bias and be long enough to accommodate a standard day optical sight up to 12 inches and night optics: PVS26, PVS27, and UNS-T-LR. The rails at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock shall be movable and removable based on operator preference. The CSR shall be developed and delivered as an optimized weapon system inclusive of a commercial/government-off-the-shelf 12” or less variable power day optic, bipod system, suppressor, and magazines. Developmental variable power day optics, bipod systems, suppressors, and magazines will be considered but must be justified based on improved performance or weight reduction.”
Manufacturer’s specifications
- CALIBER: .308 / 7.62 x 51mm
- WEIGHT: 9.2 lbs
- BARREL: Lothar-Walther 16” with 1 in 10 twist (Other barrel lengths are available)

The good news is that agencies and specialized units can expect to see more of this development work in the months ahead. In fact, my sources seem to think that two additional offerings are in the works from competing companies.
In the interim, DRD Tactical™ Paratus is where I would put my money, if you need SR25 precision with no signature. The company has a 5.56 x 45 offering in the works and is actively considering other calibers.

Braddick Defense Systems Joins Forces With Truvelo Manufacturers To Market Sniper Systems
By: Sal Palma
Truvelo Manufacturer’s and Braddick Defense Systems Sniper Division will join forces to market sniper systems to the defense industry. Truvelo of Midrand, South Africa, is known world wide as a manufacturer of accurate barrels. The company designs and manufactures small arms ranging from small caliber up to 40mm.
The joint venture should prove very productive for Truvelo since their market penetration has been limited by the specialized nature of their products. Braddick Defense Systems has the depth and breath to get Truvelo’s product to the defense markets in Africa and the EU.
Truvelo’s Ralf Gebert, director of Truvelo Armoury Division, is optimistic that partnering with Braddick will also open the U.S. market.
Daniel Defense Launches Site for Custom Rifles and Upper Receiver Groups
Daniel Defense has announced the launch of its “Build Your DDM4” section on DanielDefense.com. This announcement comes after months of extensive planning and development.
Integrated into the existing Daniel Defense web site, customers can fully customize a weapon in any configuration desirable. “The new Build Your DDM4 feature on the Daniel Defense corporate web site is a valuable tool aimed at customers who envision a different configuration than currently offered on our premium firearms”, exclaimed Jay Duncan, VP of Sales & Marketing for Daniel Defense when the project was first announced. “We’re excited to deploy this platform and witness first-hand the customer’s reaction to this option. We feel there’s nothing else available in the marketplace geared toward giving the gun enthusiast this amount of flexibility as they customize a firearm.”
Consumers will have the option to customize either a complete weapon or upper receiver group. Three different caliber options are available: 5.56mm NATO, 6.8 SPCII, and 300 Blackout (7.62 x 35mm), which was introduced earlier this year. Those opting to build a complete rifle may choose the lower receiver equipped with the Geissele® Super Semi-Automatic (SSA®) Trigger, an upgrade from the standard trigger offered on Daniel Defense rifles. Paired with Cold Hammer Forged barrels, one of Daniel Defense’s rail systems like the Omega X or RIS II, and one of the new Daniel Defense Muzzle Devices, the Build Your DDM4 section of DanielDefense.com is guaranteed to suit gun enthusiasts longing for a build based on their specifications.
Crimson Trace Goes Green…
Crimson Trace Corporation has expanded its laser aiming product line with the recent introduction of CMR-203 Rail Master™ Universal Green Laser Sight and Laserguard® Green Laser. The Laserguard® will be available for a variety of platforms as follows; LG-451 for 1911 full-sized pistols, LG-452 for full size and compact Glock, LG-453 for the Springfield Armory XD and XD(M). The CMR-203 can be mounted on any platform equipped with a Picatinny or Weaver mounting rail.
The introduction of green laser technology marks a turning point for Crimson Trace whose focus has been on developing pistol grips and other accessories around the red aiming lasers and infrared (IR).
Green lasers operate at a wave length where the human eye is more sensitive; therefore, green lasers are more visible, even in bright daylight. However, unlike red lasers, the green laser diode consumes more power resulting in shorter run times.
If you are accustomed to the red laser Laserguard® and Rail Master™ you’ll experience no change in transitioning to the green laser systems. You’ll have the same great fit and feel.

Clearing The Smoke !
The 2012 Presidential Election will undoubtedly go down in U.S. History as an event where deliberate misinformation, directed at the electorate, has reached new heights. Regrettably, it’s not the candidates that bear the blame; rather a media, political action committees, pundits and booksellers that are accountable for this outrage. These individuals have personally so much at stake that you can no longer look to them for impartiality and enlightenment.
There are two recent incidents that come to mind that illustrate my point.
- Governor Romney’s remarks regarding the 47%.
I’ve sat through the video (twice) of Governor Romney’s fund raiser in FL, where he refers to the 47% of the vote he would not get. What he was conveying to his audience is that the campaign’s focus needs to be on the 5% of voters who are undecided; essentially the middle to upper middle class voter. It is no different folks than a marketing executive meeting with his folks to properly place a product. However,in his interest to focus the group, he made a comment that was quite frankly stupid – “…the 47% pay zero taxes…” Take a look!
An individual earning $10,790 in 2011 had a total tax liability of $104 on his federal income tax return. That is an effective tax rate of 1%. Governor Romney this individual paid taxes!
2. Barack Obama’s redistribution of wealth.
Tapes have surfaced that reveal President Obama as someone who believes in “redistribution of wealth.” Just what is redistribution of wealth?
Redistribution of wealth is a socioeconomic term that describes a progressive tax. When economists say progressive, they refer to a tiered system in which earners with the highest incomes pay a larger percentage of tax scaling down to the lowest earners.
Why are taxes a redistribution of wealth? Governments raise revenue from taxation, those revenues are then allocated among a number of activities that include, infrastructure, defense and social entitlement like Social Security and Medicare. In this manner, taxes are collected and redistributed for the benefit of all.
- From 1791 to 1802, the United States government was supported by internal taxes on distilled spirits, carriages, refined sugar, tobacco and snuff, property sold at auction, corporate bonds, and slaves.
- In 1862, in order to support the Civil War effort, Congress enacted the nation’s first income tax law. It was a forerunner of our modern income tax in that it was based on the principles of graduated, or progressive, taxation and of withholding income at the source. During the Civil War, a person earning from $600 to $10,000 per year paid tax at the rate of 3%. Those with incomes of more than $10,000 paid taxes at a higher rate.
- In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution made the income tax a permanent fixture in the U.S. tax system. The amendment gave Congress legal authority to tax income and resulted in a revenue law that taxed incomes of both individuals and corporations.
- The withholding tax on wages was introduced in 1943 and was instrumental in increasing the number of taxpayers to 60 million and tax collections to $43 billion by 1945.
Regrettably, Barack Obama can not take credit for the redistribution of income concept; as you can see it was 1862 when the concept emerges in U.S. History. Since its inception in 1913, the U.S. Tax has been a progressive tax and the concept of taxation is redistribution of wealth.
What most tax reform advocates want to do is eliminate the gap between marginal tax brackets and effective tax brackets. Doing so, makes taxes flatter and eliminates the economic advantage that wealthy individuals have. The result of that is that marginal tax brackets across the board can be reduced. In any scenario, taxing income is a redistribution of wealth.

EADS & BAE Systems In Merger Talks
By: Sal Palma
Two of Europe’s largest defense contractors, EADS and BAE Systems, have entered merger negotiations, which if approved would result in a European defense giant on par with Boeing. The €38 billion deal would alter the global defense industry fabric and blaze a path to further consolidation in the U.S. and European defense sector.
The proposed merger will need the approval of EADS’s board of directors as well as France, Germany, UK and the US. The aggregation of resources, technologies and markets would place the joint company on equal footing with Boeing, which currently has a market capitalization of €41 billion.
Government owners, principally Germany who holds a 22.5% stake in EADS, have serious concerns so it may be quite some time before you see any decisions. However, stockholders should do quite well, especially in light of global government cutbacks and the looming sequestration.
ATK Has Received the XM25 System Contract.
The folks at ATK have reason to cheer. The company announced September 12th that it received an engineering and manufacturing development contract modification from the US Army’s Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier for its XM25, Individual Semi-Automatic Airburst System.
The $16.8 million contract funds the continuing design, integration, production and testing of fully functional systems to ensure the weapon’s final design meets performance requirements and is production-ready prior to fielding.
The XM25 fires a 25mm airbursting round. Munitions are programmed by an integrated target acquisition and fire control system to burst above a designated target. Soldiers are given the proper aimpoint to account for range to the target and environmental factors like ambient temperature, greatly enhancing the speed at which targets are engaged.
XM25 prototypes were fielded for FOA (Forward Operational Assessment) in Afghanistan from 11/2010 to 05/2012. ATK will be supporting another FOA scheduled for 2013 with new pre-production prototypes.
Steyr Arms to Unveil New AUG/A3

Open to the public, this event marks the first showing of the newest version of the AUG/A3 SA rifle, and in cooperation with its strategic training partner, Khyber Interactive Associates, Steyr will have Wes Doss on hand for a very special bullpup tactics seminar during the afternoon of the 29th.
Khyber Interactive Associates founder and world-renowned instructor Wes Doss will conduct a free bullpup-oriented tactics seminar on Saturday afternoon. This seminar is a combative-oriented review designed for personnel who are looking for enhanced knowledge and skills of the tactical carbine, specifically the bullpup platform and its application at ranges from contact distance out to no greater than 50 yards. The course focuses on techniques that have a broad array of applications for the bullpup system, including patrol operations, emergency response, close-quarters deployment and intermediate-range applications. The course is designed to provide a high degree of personal development topics concentrating on those areas that will enable the professional to become a more effective operator.
Schedule permitting, Doss has planned a series of live-fire exercises for pre-registered attendees after the open seminar concludes. These shooters must bring their own firearm, 100 rounds of ammunition, eye and hearing protection, and a ball cap or any other hat with a bill. Slots are limited, and to pre-register for one of these live-fire exercises, please visit the Bullpup Forums at http://bullpupforum.com/index.php?board=23.0to sign up.

Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster – Review
Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster is built solidly, if not overkill. Simply stated, it is a tank. Every effort was made to ensure accessibility without compromising retention. When used in conjunction with a lanyard weapon, it is inconceivable that you’ll ever experience losing your firearm – short of an I.E.D. blast, I suppose. You can run with it, crawl with it, fight and jump with it, and possibly even sleep with it. More importantly in these austere times, when every penny counts, you won’t find a better solution to your holster problems.
Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster may very well be the last tactical thigh holster you’ll ever need.
Confronting A Knife Attack
This video was originally posted by Christophe Scerri, COO, Persa Seguridad, Chile. It dispenses with all of the hokey knife fighting and hand-to-hand tactics; choosing instead to be grounded in reality. As you watch this short video, notice that at no-time does the operator close the assailant. Instead, the operator creates space and uses his support hand to block. The video is narrated in Spanish; judging by the accent I think it was filmed somewhere in Catalunya, Spain; probably Barcelona.
