Air France Flight 447 Help Me Understand…

The crash of Air France’s Flight 447 was the deadliest aviation accident in Air France’s history. The accident took the lives of 216 passengers and 12 crew members. I understand that the investigation is still underway but the preliminary findings bewilder me.

The initial postmortem suggests that an aerodynamic stall was the cause of the accident and minutes before the stall the pitot tubes started to give inconsistent speed readings; suggesting that they were icing up. Here’s my problem.

An aerodynamic stall can occur at any speed throttle setting and in any configuration, meaning you can be clean – flaps retracted and gear up, or you can have flaps fully extended and landing gear down. An aerodynamic stall occurs when the airflow over the leading edge of the wing is disrupted to the extent that you lose lift. Stall speeds are aircraft specific and are listed in terms of indicated airspeed. For example, a light aircraft with flaps retracted can stall at an indicated airspeed of 65 m.p.h. A pilot can apply full throttle and change the aircraft’s attitude by pulling back on the elevators; raising the nose of the aircraft thus increasing the angle of attack to the point where airflow over the wing is disrupted,  air speed drops and the wing stalls. A stall can occur at any airspeed  throttle setting in a turn, in a climb and a variety of  maneuvers where the indicated airspeed drops to the rated indicated airspeed.

The pitot tube, senses air pressure and provides airspeed information to the cockpit instruments as well as the automatic pilot. It is my understanding, that the autopilot disengaged in Air Frances’ case, which meant that the pilots had to take manual control of the aircraft. Other than ice forming on the wings causing a loss of lift, how the heck do you stall an Airbus at cruising altitude with the variety of instruments available to the pilot.

Let’s assume that the aircraft was flying straight and level. For some reason or another the pitot tube failure causes the autopilot to believe that the airspeed was higher than it actually was. So, the engine thrust is reduced correspondingly. As altitude drops the pilot applies elevator resulting in a further reduction of airspeed. As a result, airspeed drops to the point where the wing stalls…

Situations such as this would create so many telltale signs that it’s hard for me to comprehend how a stall can occur at cruising altitude. Moreover, what circumstances existed that the pilot could not recover from the stall. Even in conditions where the horizon is not visible, there are instruments in the cockpit that would make airspeed and attitude changes detectable.

So, how the heck do you stall an Airbus at cruising altitude and not recover from the stall. It is beyond me I have to admit.

Aviators feel free to chime in with comments!

Revision:

I’ve committed the cardinal sin of writing and that is – writing when something ticks you off. You’ll always make mistakes or misstatements. Having said that I have a few corrections that I’d like to make to the original post.

CamelBak® Impact Elite™ – Great Versatility and Comfort in a High Performance Tactical Glove.

Last month, I had the pleasure of reviewing what I think is the best hot weather tactical glove on the market, the CamelBak® Vent™.

In this review, I cranked it up a notch and looked at a glove that is heavier duty, so I turned to yet another new offering from CamelBak®, the Impact Elite™.

As in prior reviews, my concept of what’s important has not changed. Simply stated, if I can’t keep the glove on while performing the business as usual (BAU) tasks of a soldier operator on patrol then why bother with it.

915 Triage™ – Benchmade Through and Through

Benchmade introduced the 915 TriageÔ at the 2011 Shot Show in Las Vegas. At the time, I was unable to get a close look at it but I have to tell you this is one exciting knife.

Why call it a Triage? It offers three functions; slicing and dicing, with the modified sheepsfoot blade; rescue, with the 440C hook safety cutter; glass breaking, with a carbide glass breaker.

There is so much to like about this knife that it’s hard to pick a starting point…

Silver® Cells Set To Power Australian Soldiers

Two years ago, I wrote about what I described as the “electrification” of the soldier / operator. In that article, I spoke about the accelerating need to standardize power sources and distribution systems, so that soldiers can reduce or eliminate the plethora of batteries now carried in the field. The DoD has taken a two prong approach to resolving the power issues by standardizing on the AA battery, an approach that has had limited success, and funding renewable energy research.

The Australian National University’s Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems has developed Silver® cells that solve some of the more persistent solar cell problems. For example, the Silver® cells are bi-facial so the sun’s angle relative to the cell is not critical; the cell will operate illuminated on either side. The technology allows the fabrication of a very thin power cell matrix that when connected in series is capable of delivering high voltages; the material is so thin that it can be attached to fabric and easily worn.

If successful, Silver® cell technology could go a long way to alleviating some pressing power requirements.

Were I on the product development side, in businesses manufacturing combat uniforms, packs and other load bearing equipment, I would pay very close attention to what the Aussies are doing. It may prove to be a great opportunity for you.

Just When You Thought 2nd Amendment Questions Had Been Answered.

Speaking strictly for myself, I thought the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller followed by the 2009 ruling in McDonald v. Chicago were abundantly clear. Apparently, my assumption was wrong, and it looks like the lower courts are having problems with the “ambiguity” of the Court’s decision and some of the lower courts have gone as far as to accuse the Supreme Court of activism.

I lack the benefit of a legal education so I don’t do a very good job of dissecting a sentence to advance my view of things, I simply look at it in context; however, if anyone can be accused of activism it’s the lower courts and there are over 400 cases referring to the Heller and McDonald cases as “limiting” and “narrow.”

Keeping and eye on this issue is time well spent and I would certainly take every opportunity at the local level to make a difference. In the meantime, there are several 2nd Amendment cases in the pipe that will give the U.S. Supreme Court an opportunity to expand on its earlier decisions.

Maybe the next Supreme Court decision will be less scholarly. May I suggest…

A Preview of Camelbak’s New Impact Elite™ Tactical Gloves.

Camelbak Products, LLC is located in one of San Francisco Bay’s nicest cities, Petaluma. The company personifies the innovative spirit of Californians.

At the heart of Camelbak’s beginnings are two bicyclists Michael Eidson and Jeff Wemmer who recognized a need and filled it. It’s hard to believe that Camelbak’s beginnings can be traced back to an IV bag in a tube sock’ but that’s how it all began. How’s that for some out of the box thinking.

Camelbak redefined hydration; making it organic to the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, Camelbak hydration systems serve military men and women in the field around the world. The experienced gained enabled the company to develop, with input from the field, new and innovative tactical products like their line of tactical gloves launched in 2006.

In August I continue our look at Camelbak’s tactical glove line with my review of their new Impact Elite™. See for yourself…

August 2011 Things To Come

I’m looking at completing reviews in August ranging from tools to hydration.

I’ll also be outlining what, I think, will be the key to your success as a want-to-be supplier to the DoD. The austere times ahead will have some negative implications for those that can’t or won’t think out of the box when it comes to doing business with the DoD.

I’ll also have a Worth or NoT Worth A Dollar movie review. Will the TA01NSN be installed on the M4 backwards? Who knows, but read it here.

Battlecloth Suppressed Service Pistol Holsters

Steve at Battlecloth has had numerous requests from a variety of organizations and individuals for holsters specifically designed for suppressed service pistols. Currently, operators don’t have a convenient way to carry a sidearm with the suppressor installed.

In February of last year, I needed a holster that would take a P22 with aiming laser and a suppressor for a project I had in the works. I was so impressed with the holster and its functionality that I ended up writing a review.

BATTLECLOTH@COMCAST.NET

Steve, has added holsters for suppressed service pistols like the M9s, 1911s and SIGs. These are made to order so feel free to discuss your needs with Steve; for example, I needed a leg strap to secure the holster. The holster can be belt mounted or worn covertly using a shoulder strap.

Revision Military Exoshield® Extreme Low Profile Eyewear That Works….

How many times have you heard someone say that you need to take care of your eyes because you only have two? No doubt, you’ve heard it countless times, and maybe to the point of becoming nauseous, but like it or not it is true.

The ease with which you can loose an eye is startling. I’ve seen it more times than I care to tell you – shooters at a pistol, or rifle range, wearing no eye protection only to have their eyesight damaged when hot brass impacts the retina. It doesn’t take much. So, then, why are we so reluctant to wear eye protection equipment?

In this review I will give you a look at Revision’s Exoshield® to see how it fares with the ESS military goggle.

Reader Question Re: Budget Surpluses and Defcits

I appreciate all of your questions and I’ll be more than happy to answer your question; however, there are better forums than FOG HORN to get that information. I did open the door by opening the topic, but I’d like to close it with this response.

Thank you for understanding and thank your for visiting FOG HORN.

A budget deficit occurs when the U.S. government spends more than it takes in. The government has a number of revenue streams. It follows, that when the government spends less than it takes in, we experience a surplus.

When the government is running on a deficit, the amount by which spending exceeds income has to be financed. The government goes to the private sector and raises the funds it needs by borrowing. When the government borrows it incurs a liability. In other words, it is on the hook for the amount borrow as well as interest payments on the borrowed funds.

Interest payments are part of the fiscal budget; therefore, as national debt increases our interest payment obligation increase. Eventually, these interest payments become a larger part of our annual budget; preventing us from funding programs needed to maintain our defense posture, entitlements and all those things that benefit our country and its citizen. If unchecked, debt can increase to the point where interest payments and maturing obligations can consume the majority of government’s income. Greece, Spain, Portugal are struggling with these problems as I write this.

When a government realizes as surplus, as in the Clinton Presidency, it does not follow that the national debt will reduce correspondingly. In President Clinton’s case, national debt grew 1.02 trillion dollars 1993-1997 and 0.4 trillion dollars 1997-2001. So, take the deficit v. surplus discussions with a grain of salt until legislation is passed that requires all surpluses be applied to retire national debt. When that happens you can take it seriously.

Surpluses come when the economy is growing, which gives government a larger revenue base. You don’t want to tax your way to a surplus because you are reducing disposable income which shrinks the economy further. There are a number of other issues such as balance of payments etc. that need to be considered and are advanced topics.

The key to surpluses is an expanding GDP (this gives you near full employment) with a reduced balance of payments.

I hope this helps you.

Why Defense Budget Cutting Is Not The Answer.

As a follow-up to an earlier post I want to show you where some of your defense dollars go to. The projects that I represent here are just those of the Raytheon Corporation. There are literally hundreds of companies across the United States working on a number of defense driven initiatives with equal commercial promise.

My challenge to you is find one project in the list below that does not have commercial application. In fact, find one that would not accelerate technology and / or productivity.

  • Advanced Chemical Battery Technologies: The Lithium Revolution
  • Power Sources That Last a Century
  • Creating Compact, Reliable and Clean Power With Fuel Cell Technology
  • The Battlefield Game Changer: Portable and Wearable Soldier Power
  • Solar Power: Applying Raytheon‘s Defense Technologies
  • External Combustion Engines for Military Applications
  • The ReGenerator: Alternative Energy for Expeditionary Missions
  • Intelligent Power and Energy Management
  • The Role of Energy Storage in Intelligent Energy Systems
  • Cyber Risk Management in Electric Utility Smart Grids
  • Cybersecurity for Microgrids
  • Standardizing the Smart Grid

Information on many of these projects is directly available from Raytheon or check out a copy of Technology Today, 2011, Journal 1.

Answering Nin-Hai Tseng’s Question

Nin-Hai Tseng is a journalist that covers economics and finance for Fortune.com. She recently published an article that asks an interesting question, “Defense spending helped create today’s fiscal problems. So why isn’t it being considered seriously as a way to help fix them?…”

First, let’s clear up a couple of things. Raising the debt limit is congressional authorization for the United States of America to increase its line of credit. It’s the equivalent of you, as an individual, accepting a credit limit increase on a revolving line of credit. This is not necessarily a bad thing; businesses call it the degree of operating leverage. Leverage, or debt, can greatly improve your personal finances or business during periods of increasing or stable income. Your home, for example, in a rational market, will increase in value on an annualized basis, at a rate of 5.5% to 10% depending on location and other factors. That appreciation occurs not on your equity but on the appraised value of your home; therefore, your equity grows at a rate of, say, 8% on $250,000 and not your $20,000 down-payment. This is leverage at work. So, having debt is not a bad thing.

Defense spending is a recurring operating expense that accounts for a sizeable chunk of the United States fiscal budget. Defense spending, is no different from your annual expense for going back and forth to work, it’s simply part of your annual budget. Where the problem comes in is when you are spending on an annual basis more than you take home in the form of income. If you make $10,000 per year but spend $12,000 the $2,000 difference is absorbed by your line of credit. In government’s case deficit annual spending adds to the national debt.

The great smoke screen being thrown out is that reducing defense spending will reduce the national debt. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cutting defense spending will only reduce government’s annual expenditures; therefore, you won’t add to the existing national debt by borrowing to cover deficit spending.

Decimating the defense budget has a serious impact on national security that will have a significantly higher cost when discounted to present value. The corrective action needed to respond to future threats will exceed the planned savings; there are also endless intangible costs.

Much of the technology gains that we experience in today’s markets are as a direct result of industry responding to the needs of the military in support of the Iraq and Afghanistan actions, and virtually 96 cents of every dollar spent on defense stays in the United States.

Blindly tightening purse strings on the DoD will do far greater harm than good. The better approach, is process oriented. This involves everything in the ladder starting with flattening organizations – you can start with DHS – to procurement. Clearly defining needs, adherence to COTS, wherever possible, and a leaner bureaucracy are the keys to success.

Dealing with the national debt requires surplus revenues, but you can only do that in an expanding economy. It won’t come with increased taxation and it shure as hell won’t come from the frenetic pace of outsourcing – look at everything in your home to see where its been manufactured and/or assembled.

I reiterate the statement the German government made a year or more ago: “…the United States needs to start building things again…”

Taking a mechanic out of a Lockheed Martin plant, due to a cancelled project, and putting him or her in Target selling toasters will never deliver surpluses, and surpluses is what is needed to reduce the national debt. The peace dividend is no dividend at all.

Get real folks!

Advanced Digital Concealment Systems Announces A-TACS FG Almost Complete.

Advanced Digital Concealment Systems (DCS), developers of the A-TACS camouflage pattern, announced that work is nearly completed on the upcoming A-TACS Green Variant which will be called A-TACS FG.

“In just a few days, we will put a countdown clock on our
website that will also give the first hint at what the new pattern will look
like. When the countdown ends, the full pattern will be revealed. A-TACS FG is
built on the A-TACS platform using organic pixels and patterns within patterns,
but will be uniquely suited to the distinctive elements and shapes found in more
temperate environments. It will also be the first pattern of its kind to feature
simulated depth and multi-layering – further increasing the functional aspects
of the design. Several licensing partners will be showing the new A-TACS pattern at the 2012 Shot Show in January.”

Frogman or Mall Gerbil

Anders Behring Breivik in full regalia, is he an operator or simply a short circuited mall gerbil?

There’s a bit of closet commando in all of us but Anders Breivik actually drank the cool aide. Judging by the number of accessories on his M14, I’d say he was insecure.

Probably a frequent visitor on Magpul’s web site, it’s undeniable that Breivik fits the Akhtar’s phenomenological profile – we simply see him as a genetic defect.

Be that as it may, Anders Breivik forever altered the lives of hundreds, if not millions, of wonderfully innocent people; not to mention fuel the imaginations of countless individuals that think being a schmatta is more exciting than the defense sector.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI Offer a $10,000 Reward.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals behind the July 15 theft of firearms from an army supply warehouse in Fort Irwin, California,

When 26 AK-74’s turned up missing from a Ft. Irwin Warehouse, the ATF and FBI launched an investigation that has led to the arrest of some Ft. Irwin employees.

The AK-74 is an offspring of the AK-47 in 5.45 x 39. It was introduced by the Soviet Union in 1974 and is widely distributed around the globe. Some of these weapons have surfaced in Fresno, CA. The fully automatic AK-74 is capable of firing a projectile at 900 meters per second at a cyclic rate of 600 to 700 rounds per minute, depending on the configuration. In the hands of street gangs or drug cartels, a fully automatic AK-74 would present a serious challenge to local law enforcement.

Individuals with any information are encouraged to contact special agent John A. Torres of the ATF’s Los Angeles field office.

Princeton Tec® – Remix Pro Tactical Headlamp

Owning the night” is to be able to operate effectively in it; this is the case across the entire spectrum of visible and non-visible light. Lighting is important and over the years it has become very much a part of the tactical equation. Whether the objective is target acquisition, target engagement, or personal safety all of the armed services and law enforcement have invested heavily in tactical lighting.

The importance of good reliable lighting was accentuated in the CQC /CQB engagements in Iraq and in navigating the many caves and structures in Afghanistan. Once a miner’s or hiker’s tool the headlamp has come of its own in both theaters but particularly in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Throughout the balance of this year, I will be taking a close look at headlamps from a variety of manufacturer’s to bring to your attention those that I feel deliver exceptional value and are worthy of your consideration. One such headlamp is PrincetonTec’sÒ Remix Pro.

Deadline For Submitting Samples In Carbine Competition – 27 September 2011

Proposal and bid samples from participants are due by 27 September 2011.

The source selection process for award will consist of two evaluation phases ending with an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract award to up to three contractors followed by a final down selection to a single contractor for a new carbine. The competition phase is expected to last two years, although the time frames will vary based upon the number of entrants received and qualified for each phase.

Phase I: Evaluations will include weapon hardware attributes, facility production capability, and cost/price proposal. The IC candidates that represent the best value, as determined by the Source Selection Authority will proceed into Phase II of the evaluation.

Phase II: Evaluations will include specific hardware testing, written technical proposals, management, cost/price, government purpose rights, fielding operational and supportability impact and past performance, and small business participation volumes of the proposal.

After the completion of the first two evaluation phases, the competition will enter a third down select phase where up to three finalists will be awarded contracts to produce limited numbers of test articles. The down select phase will include significant “user in the loop” testing where Soldiers will put the weapons through their paces in a limited user evaluation. The M4A1 will be tested alongside the competing designs in order to establish a baseline data set for performance comparison.

After determining the weapon that best meets the requirement, top Army leaders will conduct a cost benefit analysis to determine if it is in the best interest of the Army to procure the winning carbine, and if so, what the ultimate basis of issue would be.

Acoustic Shooter Locating System Now Ready for Market

Photo Courtesy Rhinemetall AG - Rhinemetall Active Shooter Detection System

Rheinmetall AG announced today that its active shooter detection system is ready for prime time. If  it proves to be reliable, the new detection system will add another level of security to the FOB as well as mechanized and foot patrols. Rheinmetall’s active shooter detection system is able to pinpoint threats, acoustic reconnaissance is an important capability for  warding off attacks of this kind. Acoustic reconnaissance components  significantly enhance the survivability and operational effectiveness of  command, mission-specific and combat vehicles deployed in high-threat  environments.

This led Rheinmetall to develop the Acoustic Shooter  Locating System (ASLS), a first basic version of which is now ready for the  market.

The ASLS basic version comprises a powerful acoustic sensor  platform (microphone antenna) with integrated analysis electronics as well as a  control and display device inside the vehicle.

When a shot is fired, the  ASLS alerts the crew acoustically and visually, instantly displaying the results  of the shooter location process on the control and display device, including  azimuth, elevation and distance. In addition, the shooter’s georeferenced  position is determined with a GPS system. This makes it possible to use the  information in C4I systems, e.g. for target assignment and subsequent  engagement.

The microphones feature an extensive dynamic operating range,  meaning that they reliably register loud artillery fire as well as less noisy  muzzle blasts.

The optimized microphone antennas and robust signal  analysis procedure enable precise location of the shooter, with complete  coverage of the surrounding terrain and a low false alarm rate even in the  disrupted zone around the vehicle.

Integrated position sensors compensate  for the movement of the vehicle, meaning that the shooter’s position on the  control and display device can be precisely located even when the vehicle is on  the move. Furthermore, the display incorporates a history feature that enables  ready access to recent events.

An easy-to-use menu enables intuitive  operation of the ASLS after minimal instruction. Designed for compactness, the  ASLS is characterized by low weight and low power consumption (less than two  watts).

The basic configuration of the ASLS now available is designed for  maximum flexibility. A quick mounting device eliminates the need for a  vehicle-specific installation kit. This means that the system can be mounted in  less than 15 minutes even in small vehicles with very little effort. The  analysis electronics and battery pack are both integrated into the antenna base,  enabling the system to operate without being connected to the vehicle’s central  power supply. The analysis results can be transmitted to the control and display  device either by wireless link or cable.

The ASLS’s modularity assures  high growth potential. Numerous enhancements and integration solutions in  higher-echelon system environments are currently being examined under the rubric  of future technologies.

German Army Deploys Carl Zeiss Panoramic Reconnaissance and Surveillance Systems To Protect FOB

Panoramic Reconnaissance and Surveillance Systems by Carl Zeiss

Panoramic reconnaissance and surveillance systems by Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH protect the German forward operating bases (FOBs) in northern Afghanistan. The German army has ordered them to meet immediate deployment requirements. Comparable systems by Carl Zeiss Optronics have monitored the surroundings of the three existing German army outposts for years.

Forward operating bases are temporary bases with a considerably more basic structure than bivouacs, and soldiers carry out their duty under the most difficult conditions. They cannot rely on the comprehensive protection as at an army outpost. It is therefore important to monitor what’s going on outside the base at all times, so that possible movement of suspect people and vehicles can be detected. The panoramic reconnaissance and surveillance systems by Carl Zeiss are available to facilitate this not only in the immediate surroundings but over a distance of several kilometers as well.

Because their construction is identical to other reconnaissance and surveillance systems in the field, logistics during deployment becomes considerably easier. The panoramic reconnaissance and surveillance systems consist of high-resolution daylight target observation and thermal imaging cameras as well as a system for situation reports. Comparable systems are already used worldwide on thousands of kilometers of borders.

“The Mechanic” – Worth or NoT Worth a Dollar?

It’s time to kick-off our “Worth or NoT Worth a Dollar” movie review and I think we chose a great starting point with this action packed production.

The Mechanic follows the life of an elite hitman, Arthur Bishop, played by Jason Statham, former Olympic Diver on the British National Diving Team, as he teaches his trade to the son of one of his victims, Steve McKenna, played by Ben Foster.

Steve McKenna reaches out to Bishop when he learns of Harry McKenna’s, his father, death. Unbeknown to Steve McKenna, Bishop was the assassin.

Harry McKenna, played by Donald Sutherland, a long time friend and mentor of Arthur Bishop, was made to look guilty of an indiscretion for which his fate was death; believing the story Bishop takes out Harry. The only thing that links Harry’s hit to Bishop is Harry’s prized chrome 1911, which Arthur Bishop used to finish Harry.

As the mystery unravels, Arthur Bishop discovers that he was hoodwinked into killing Harry McKenna as a way to cover up a grander more sinister plot. So, Arthur Bishop with Steve McKenna, who throughout the movie looks more like a second from Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, in tow sets out to get all those responsible.

This is a guy movie through and through. It’s one of those production that leave you sitting there wondering what the hell it was that you just saw. My question is “what the hell is this about” – a reaction akin to Stallone’s The Expendables.  Hollywood has it in for the C.I.A.; I have yet to see a movie where the C.I.A. lets an employee retire, everybody gets whacked. I guess it keeps pension costs down.

The Mechanic is without question a closet commando’s delight. It features 1911s, Glocks, FN P90, HK MP5, Barrett M82A1, M4s, SIGs, GEMTECH Suppressors, Beretta M9, HK G36s, knives, NVD, AK47s, FN FAL and every conceivable shoulder fire weapon on the planet.

Arthur is also quite the audiophile and listens to his vinyl  collection on a turntable and vacumm tube amplifier.

Arthur’s life prevents him from having a lasting and meaningful relationship so he patronizes a local New Orleans hooker, played by Mini Anden, who has deep affection for Arthur and treats the audience to a brief and somewhat occluded pudendum shot (not shown here) as she heads for the bathroom after spending a night with Arthur.

Arthurn, although disciplined and ruthless does pay rather well.

In one of his more intense and believable scenes Steve McKenna tries to position himself to trick their next victim.

Here’s a movie with sex, foul language, MP5s, MP7A1, M4s, SIG P226, Beretta M9, 1911, GEMTECH Suppressors, Barrett M82A1, M4s and G36s, audiophile equipment, sports cars, exposed breasts, snap shot of the pudendum, sailboat, lesbian sex and a hint of gay sex. So, we rate it Worth A Dollar.

Drop by your local Blockbuster kiosk pay a $1 and rent it. One thing is certain, your wife or girl will check out but then you can wake her afterwards.

Let us know what you think Worth or NoT Worth a Dollar?

Cpl. Dakota Meyer First Living Marine To Receive CMH

Cpl. Dakota Meyer U.S.M.C.

Former U.S.M.C. Cpl. Dakota Meyer will be the first living Marine to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.

Meyer, who left the Marine Corps in June 2010, was nominated for the medal after risking his life to race into the kill zone of a firefight to find three missing Marines and a Navy corpsman, Marine Corps Times reported earlier today after confirming the Leatherneck report.

The four men were already dead and stripped of their gear and equipment, according to the report. Along with friendly Afghan soldiers Meyer got the bodies away from the combat area where they could be flown out.

Cpl. Meyer’s actions brought great honor to his country and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps. His conduct and courage in battle honors not only himself and his family, but us all.

Government Buildings Struck By Explosions – Oslo, Norway

It’s hard for me to comprehend the mindset that would perpetrate such an act; especially in a country like Norway. Norway has been at the forefront of human rights and has numerous humanitarian missions across the globe. One thing is certain, this isn’t someone upset about the lutefisk, and smacks of AQ and Associates. Our sympathy and our hearts go out to the awesome Norwegian people who suffer this needless tragedy. Norway has been an ally in the GWT and we thank them for their support.

Updated Saturday 23 July 2011

Participation in this horrific event by AQA is not the case.  The Oslo police and Norwegian authorities have identified the suspect as 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik, of Norwegian origin. Mr. Breivik is in custody and has been charged with the camp killings and the bombings.

It appears that Mr. Breivik, a Christian fundamentalist, was dissatisfied with Norway’s ethnic integration and felt it necessary to do something about it. It’s also apparent that Christ’s message of love and fellowship has eluded this man. What a shame!

Bourque Industries Tests Kryron™ Ballistic Plate

Bourque Industries is a publicly-traded (OTC:BORK) advanced materials science company. Its founder and CEO, John M. Bourque, invented Kryron™, a revolutionary metal-alloying process that uses nanotechnology to fundamentally alter common metals at the molecular level to create ultra-high performing super alloys.

The company hopes its developments will revolutionize the capabilities of existing ballistic body armor.

Of course, success will depend on its ability to deliver a lightweight and cost-effective solution. The application of nano technology to enhance metallic crystal lattice is an area of intense and ongoing research that holds great promise for more than just ballistic body armor.

OTIS TRS® – The Personification Of Excellence.

Equipping the Army’s inventory of M4 carbines with a highly accurate rail system enhances the functionality of the weapon and brings the M4 carbine into the 21st century.

The need for a reliable rail system has been recognized for quite sometime and a number of companies are manufacturing quad rails in a variety of lengths, which begs the question, why did Otis Technology enter a mature market with its TRS® rail system. The answer is equally interesting…

Better Late Than Never – USA To Change ITAR Regulations

For years, the U.S. Defense industry has been hamstrung by cumbersome ITAR export controls. The archaic regulations are often leveraged by foreign defence competitors to keep U.S. technologies from international projects. Look for that to change in the near future; in fact, it may already be in the implementation phase.

As always, the proof is in the pudding and this is something where you’ll want to read the fine print. However, if the proposed changes are adopted, and I have every reason to believe they will be, you will benefit from a more streamlined and clearer process.

The proposed changes are described as the “4 singles ” reforms. These modifications include:

  1. A single, tiered export control list, instead of 2 major (State’s USML & Commerce’s CCL) and some minor lists, which do not really differentiate. It will feature “higher fences around fewer items,” and allow items to progressively move down the tiered list as technologies become more widespread.
  2. A single, newly created export licensing agency, instead of 3 or more.
  3. A single agency to coordinate enforcement instead of several.
  4. A single unified IT system. It would replace the current mix of newer IT systems (Defense), older systems (Commerce, built-in 1987 and not modified much), and mostly paper-based systems (State Department).

Signaling the forward momentum are the rule changes handed down from the Bureau of Industry and Security, which will allow technologies with no or low military or intelligence sensitivity to move off the U.S. Munitions List to the Commerce Control List. Transition to the CCL will require interagency reviews.

Additionally subassemblies, parts and components not “specially designed” for the military will now be subject to the same export control requirements as their commercial market equivalents.

Upcoming Reviews

I am completing a review of the OTIS Technology Turned Rail System (TRS), which will be available on this site and Scribd. OTIS describes its TRS as the most accurate rail system on the market, and from what I’ve seen that’s a statement you can take to the bank. It’s not inexpensive but perfection has always had its price.

I am also finishing a review of the PrincetonTec Remix Pro, a headlamp that gets two thumbs up from me. PrincetonTec did everything right… You can read it on this site or Scrib.

On the lighter side, I’m launching “Worth or NoT Worth a Dollar” movie reviews with my review of ” The Mechanic”.

The film features Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donal Sutherland (who thankfully gets whacked very early in the movie) but is it Worth or NoT Worth a Dollar? Read about it here and you decide.

US Army’s AH-64D Apache Avionics Integration Program Gets JTRS

AH-64D (Our Mascot)

Lockheed Martin delivered the first secure joint tactical radio to US Army’s AH-64D Apache Avionics Integration Lab. The airborne, maritime / fixed station joint tactical Radio System, or AMF-JTRS as it is called, is a two channel radio running the Link 16 waveform.

Link 16 waveform operates in the High-UHF spectrum 960 Mhz to 1,215 Mhz and supports voice, data and video imagery. Link 16 supports data rates that are significantly higher up to a maximum of 238 kilo bits per second. The waveform is MIL-STD 6016, STANAG 5516 so inter-force communications should be seemless.

The AMF-JTRS delivered includes a two channel Engineering Development Model or EDM with a 200w Link 16 amplifier. The AMF-JTRS running Link 16 employs random frequency hopping, so it’s jam resistant.

Just a quick word on “jamming resistance”. Nations with developed communications technology have been known to jam an entire spectrum even if it means denying their own capabilities and in some cases that strategy is incorporated into a battle plan.

I am glad to see JTRS moving forward and it should prove interesting to see how the entire communications fabric comes together. One thing is certain, there is some very cool stuff in the pipe and we should start seeing that in the near future.

The Case Of The Intergluteal Cleft – Another True Story

I have a favorite Chinese restaurant that I frequent in town, and whenever I visit my pool hustling pal, at the restaurant, I take the train. Just this past week, I went down there to enjoy some of their great food and shoot the breeze with my buddy. As I got out of the train car, a young lady got off behind me. I noticed that she was heavy and the escalator to the ground level was narrow, so I extended her the courtesy of letting her step on to the escalator first. Unbeknown to me, at the time, she was wearing a skirt, which when combined with the size of her derriere, terminated at the intersection of her upper leg and buttocks. As she stepped on to the escalator she turned and looked at me with askance; at the same time placing her hand so that it was covering her intergluteal cleft followed by the cupping of her fingers inward as to prevent me from looking in there.

It seems to me that if she were concerned about exposing her business she would have worn something else but that’s life so they say…

This has been another FOG HORN true story.

Suppressors Current State of the Technology – Part 13 – Yankee Hill Machine Co., Inc.

Yankee Hill Machine Co., Inc (YHM) traces its roots back to 1951 when a couple of men, Wallace Judd and James Graham teamed to start their own machining facility. Over the years, the company grew to 50 employees and 40,000 square feet of manufacturing space; located in Florence, Massachusetts.

Before entering the suppressor business, YHM established itself as a leading manufacturer of carbine and rifle rail systems that were of high quality at a competitive price point. They expanded the product line to include, flash suppressors, rail accessories and suppressors.

YHM recognized the need for an affordable high quality suppressor for the commercial space. They teamed with Sound Technology and produced their first suppressor in 2005.

Today, YHM manufactures centerfire rifle, pistol and submachinegun suppressors in .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm, 5.56, 6.8. 7.62 and 338 Lapua Magnum. The company also manufactures a complete line of rimfire suppressors as well as integral suppressors in .22 caliber.

Yankee Hill’s rifle suppressors are all a quick detach design using the company’s highly successful Phantom Flash Hider system, which holds the sound suppressor firmly in place and allows the sound  suppressor to be removed by hand when no longer needed. A gas seal keeps the  threads clean so the suppressor will not bind, making removal a breeze.

One Tough Rabbit…

Everything down in Texas is bigger and better. How many times have you heard that from proud Texans? Well, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with local pride even if in a lot of cases it’s folklore or just plain boasting.

My last may be true for a number of folks but this is one Texas Rabbit that you just don’t want to mess with…

If the rabbit doesn’t impress you the Texan laughing in the background will crack you up.

Fair is Fair….

Earlier this week, we congratulated Jay Leno on his Emmy nomination. We did neglect to tell you that The Late Show with David Letter was also nominated. I believe the category is for best director in a variety show. So, fair is fair.

It is our understanding, that Dave tapes all of his shows to ensure the show maintains his desired level of quality. For example, I’m sure Dave will do as many retakes as he needs to get the desired audience response.

However, one thing is certain, when Dave bellows “You ain’t seen nothing yet” he’s not misleading you.
