CADEX Inc. Lauches Strike 30 M24 Chassis

CADEX Strike 30 chassis

Cadex Defense is a Quebec, Canadian, defense contractor offering its customers turnkey solutions
from design and prototype to full production and service.

The company has recently introduced its Strike 30 advanced rifle chassis designed specifically to help modernize the aging M24 sniper platform. The Strike 30 requires no modification to the barreled action so it’s a drop and insert solution.

Cadex’s Strike 30 is a folding stock design with and integrated rail system that easily accommodates
day and night optics along with most other accessories. The stock is fully adjustable for cheek weld and length of pull. Because the Strike 30 is designed around the M24 long action sniper platform the operator can easily convert the weapon from .308 to .300 Win Mag; finally, the Strike 30 is magazine fed.

Darley Defense was on hand at AUSA 2011, Washington, D.C.  to present the Strike 30 and other Cadex products.

SAKO Launches Its New Sniper Platform The TRG M10

SAKO from Finland, and now part of the Beretta family, has introduced its new multi-caliber
sniper rifle, the SAKO M10. The M10 adds to SAKO’s already distinguished sniper
platforms the M22 and M42, launched in 1999. Both the M22 and M42 have tremendous
global acceptance in military and law enforcement circles.

The M10 is available in .308, 300 WinMag and 338 Lapua Magnum and offering barrel lengths from 408.5 mm to 689 mm. The M10’s modular design supports caliber and barrel changes by the operator in the field.

Standard 1913 Picatinny rails are integrated at the three (short or long), six (short, long),
nine(short, long) and 12 (short, full length/0 MOA, 30 MOA) o’clock positions
to accommodate the user’s choice of scopes, night sights, lasers, bipods and
other accessories.

The rifle  offers ambidextrous controls, and the fully adjustable rear stock is available

Desert Tactical Arms Takes The Systems Approach To Precision Rifles.

You may associate the name of Desert Tactical Arms (DTA) with some of the finest precision sniper platforms available to military and law enforcement customers. However, this small but ambitious company, led by Nick Young, President of DTA, is producing some rather amazing weapon systems, and the premier offering is the DTA SRS Sniper Rifle Chassis in 338 Lapua Magnum.
What sets the DTA SRS apart from its competition is the support for a variety of calibers through a simple conversion requiring no more than 60 seconds to perform. The process is designed to be a field event under field conditions. The operator simply swaps barrel, magazine and bolt – Done!
Due to its bullpup design, the DTA SRS is no longer than the M16. The chassis is adjustable to suit operator body type and operational requirements. The trigger is fully adjustable, and the chassis offers full length rails at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The stock houses a quick deployment monopod for rear support. Mounting day or night optics is accomplished via 1913 rail system.
I had the opportunity to test fire the DTA SRS at the 2011 International Sniper Competition, held annually, at Ft. Benning, GA. Nick was preset at the vendor exhibit and I took advantage of that to try my hand at a 1,583 yard target. The trigger pull was smooth, breaking crisply like a glass rod and the weapon chassis was extremely comfortable to shoot. In this informal setting, I was able to hold 1 minute accuracy out to the target without much difficulty at all.
You’d think this was enough; however, if you ask Nick Young, making a high performance sniper rifle is simply step one in a systems approach to design. So, Desert Tactical Arms manufactures its own suppressors, muzzle brakes, and ammunition.
The end product is a sniper platform that is precisely tuned and quite capable of holding .25 minute of angle accuracy under most conditions. Desert Tactical Arms currently manufactures the DTA SRS, which supports 243 Win / .308 Win / .300 Win / .338LM / *New .260 Rem / 7mm / 6.5 x 47 mm.

Look For Continuing Development Of Kestrel’s Ballistics Weather Tracker™ with Horus® ATrag® Software

4500 NV, 4500 NV Bluetooth, 4500 NV Horus Atrag

The United States of America is indeed blessed with a veritable cornucopia of talent, and nowhere is this more evident than in the defense industrial complex.

The companies that make up this huge fabric are creative and committed to providing relevant and timely solutions to battlefield needs. One such company, Nielsen Kellerman, is a shinning example of that with their Kestrel weather meters.

Over the last five years, Nielsen Kellerman has transform their top of the line meter, Kestrel 4500 weather meter, to the 4500 NV, 4500 NV with Bluetooth and 4500 NV Ballistic with the HORUS Vision ATrag ballistic software embedded.

Currently, they are working with FLIR to develop an interface that would allow for the exchange of data from the FLIR range finders to the 4500 NV ballistic. FLIR ranging information will be supplied to the ATrag software which will compute a firing solution instantly, thus improving speed and accuracy. The sniper or spotter will no longer be required to do manual entry in the AO.

In the future, you will see improvements made to the power source possibly going from AAA batteries to one AA, bringing the power source in line with military standards. In addition to potential powering adjustments, the Kestrel folks are looking at a number of other enhancements, which I’m presently not at liberty to discuss.

All-in-all, this translates to some really good things for the military and law enforcement  community.

Media Roundtable With Brigadier General Camille Nichols

We wish to thank Brigadier General Camille Nichols for her time and insight.

Topics for this morning’s roundtable included a number of initiatives and programs: Army Combat Pant, Pelvic Protection, Combat Boots, Individual Carbine Competition, M4 Carbine Product Improvement Program, XM25, Individual Gunshot Detector, Joint Effects Targeting System, and the Nett Warrior program.

[————————–Highlights—————————]

  • The FY 2011 budget has $2.8 billion earmarked for Soldier equipment.
  • Emphasis to remain on COTS.
  • Looking forward the U.S. Army will need to do more with less.
  • In the area of ballistic protection, the Army will be looking at and fielding a number of products ranging from Kevlar athletic cups and underwear to exterior ballistic protection that wraps around the pelvic regions to provide protection to the penis, testicles and rectal areas.
  • Earlier this year one of the topics that I wrote about was the hybrid night vision technologies; that is the integration of thermal imaging with image intensification. Formally designated as the ENVG for enhanced night vision goggle, the U.S. Army has 5,000 units in the field, with very positive results.
  • The ECH, Enhanced Combat Helmet, a collaborative effort with the USMC is now in production. The ECH is lighter, better prevents trauma and offers enhanced ballistic performance.
  • Look for new Hot Weather Mountain Boots.
  • The Army’s carbine improvement program continues its two-pronged approach. The carbine competition will proceed first followed by the p-i-p phase. Candidly I can’t see why those aren’t concurrent efforts since any interdependencies can be readily managed.
  • NETT Warrior designed to enhance dismounted situational awareness seems to be headed in the appliance agnostic direction. The soldier will be able to use the appliance that best suits his needs.

Fort Bragg Takes Home The Gold At The 2011 International Sniper Competition.

Each year the folks at Ft. Benning, GA, and the U.S. Army Sniper School host one of the most grueling sniper competitions in the world. The activities, and course of fire, are designed to challenge even the best sniper teams in the world.

This year’s competition included teams from the Army, Army National Guard,U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Air Force, Pentagon Police, the San Diego Police Department and countries of Canada, Germany and Ireland – a total of 32 two-man teams from around the world competed.

Unlike prior years, sniper teams who participated, this year, were not allowed to use their own weapons. Instead, the U.S. Army Sniper School issued M110 SASS rifles, equipped with Leupold optics and HORUS H58 reticles. To a sniper, this is equivalent to writing a love letter using someone elses arm. I asked a number of the NCO’s what prompted the decision and the response was overwhelmingly “to level the playing field.”

In prior year competitions, the teams were allowed to use their own weapon systems including day and night vision optics. Teams from the special forces community with access to Title 10 funding had a distinct advantage in equipment  choices over many of the “Big Army” units and National Guard units. For 2011, under the leadership of MSGT Bloom, the decision was made to remove that advantage and level the playing field for all teams.

Master Sgt. Kevin Owens and Sgt. 1st Class Terry Gower of B Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group won the competition that started Tuesday and ended Friday.

Second Place – Cpl. Michael Craven and Cpl. Lloyd Kenny of the Irish Defense Forces.

Third place – Sgt. 1st Class Tony Amerman and Sgt. 1st Class Andy Roy, B of Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group at Fort Bragg.

Fourth place – Staff Sgt. Jonathan Geib and Sgt. Jesse Wargolet, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Regiment, 29th Brigade Combat Team at the Arizona National Guard.

Fifth place – Sgt. 1st Class Gabe Kessay and Sgt. 1st Class Chance Giannelli of D Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group at Fort Bragg.

Merrell’s Awesome Barefoot Tough Glove

North Georgians are blessed in that we have an abundance of trails suitable for running and hiking; they range from smooth and flat to rocky and hilly. Not too far from the “bat cave” I have access to about 18 miles of great trail – you don’t need to be the Bionic Man to run them but they will get your heart pumping.

Successfully completing that run requires a shoe that disappears into your feet – in other words go unnoticed. If you’re thinking about your feet when running a trail you’ll never get the bang that got you running in the first place.

To that end, I recently tried a pair of Merrell’s Barefoot Tough Glove. I was extremely impressed with the fit and comfort. The shoes are light  and provide a stable running platform on just about any surface that you’ll encounter.

Merrell offers men and women styles; in fact, the ladies have a variety of lace up shoes to choose from; accessorize with some fish net stockings and you’re good to go…

Give them a try.

BAE Systems Introduces A Wearable Antenna

The days of the whip antenna may soon be gone, and not too soon for me! In my days gone by as an 11B – this is the 11B that spent more time walking than riding – the biggest pain in the neck was my comms guy packing a 77 / RT-841 with a gargantuan whip antenna that you could wrap around your body. If you wanted to raise anyone on the net it had to be deployed and when you did that you might as well hang a flag or coon tail on it. To this date, antennas remain a problem.

But, it looks like that’s about to change with BAE Systems’ introduction of a body wearable antenna. The new body wearable antenna (9BWA) will be able to transmit voice and video as well as GPS location information. It is designed to lighten the load that soldiers have to carry with the antenna elements weaved into fibres in the soldier’s uniform.

Although I revel in the announcement, I’d like to see it operate across the spectrum needed to support voice, data and video, and I’d like to see an assessment of potential health hazards to the wearer.

Revision Introduces BATLSKIN™ Head Protection System

Between 2000 and 2011 the DoD reported over 212,000 cases of traumatic brain injury or TBI. Blunt head trauma along with maxillofacial wounds continue to be a problem for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The risk of TBI can be effectively mitigated through the addition of mandibular protection and a face shield to combat helmets – there’s been good research done on the subject ; Hoge,C. W., McGurk, D., Thomas, J. L., Cox, A. L., Engel, C. C., Castro, C. A. (2008). Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in U.S. Soldiers Returning from Iraq. The New England Journal of Medicine, (358) 5, 453-63. supporting the efficacy of faceshields and mandibular protection.

To address the need for improved battle protection, Revision introduced the
first fully integrated and fully modular head protection systems of its kind – BATLSKIN™ Head Protection System.

The technology behind this helmet is quite amazing and its modularity provides a configurable system that can be tailored to any mission or application.

Revision’s BATLSKIN™ Head Protection System meets and exceeds EN 397, Canadian CG634 and U.S. ACH impact standards.

MARSOC Wants to Fix Its Uniform Problems

The Marine Corps Times reported that the flame resistant (FR) uniforms currently issued to MARSCO special operations personnel are not hacking the rigors of Afghanistan. It appears the uniforms are prone to ripping after limited use.

MARSOC personnel are complaining about ripped seats, blown-out crotches and tears around the seams. To improve durability, Crye Precision, the manufacturer, switched back to cotton thread rather than the flame-retardant thread which appears to be the source of the problem. Switching back to a cotton thread may increase garment durability but it also reduces the overall level of flame resistance.

The problems surfaced in late August when a deployed MARSOC operator reported it to Kit Up! , Military.com’s blog site.

REASON A/S Improves On Its Live Diver Detection System – DSEi 2011

SeaBat 7128 Diver Detection

Vessel vulnerability while at anchor or port remains a significant concern to commercial and military vessel owners and operators. The damage that live divers can inflict on a docked ship, or at anchor, is substantial. All of the major security firms that I’ve had contact with have maritime programs geared to mitigate that risk. They now have a new tool.

At DSEi 2011 REASON introduced their newest PDS2000 ADT software designed to work with the SeaBat 7128 sonar array designed for live diver detection.
RESON demonstrated the latest version of their PDS2000 ADT software combined with its highly successful SeaBat 7128 sonar in a live waterside security, diver detection exercise.

The new system configuration is designed to be highly portable for rapid deployment. It can be deployed and operational in less than an hour and can be mounted on a harbour wall, wharf or on a small vessel for mobile operations in ports, rivers and estuaries.

The system utilizes RESON’s SeaBat 7128, which is the world’s only dual frequency diver detection sonar that operates in excess of 200 kHz and now incorporates the latest version of the PDS2000 ADT software. The PDS2000 ADT software has new features enabling users to overlay sonar images and detected targets on a digital map for ease of identification in busy cluttered environments.

REASON Headquartered in Denmark, has a global presence and has become synonymous with multi-beam sonar arrays and supporting technologies.

BAE’s Systems Debuts ADAPTIV at DSEi 2011…

Unlike traditional camouflage systems which rely on paint or nets to hide vehicles, ADAPTIV can instantly blend a vehicle into its background. The system can also be used on ships and fixed installations, allowing them to stay undetected by enemy surveillance units. The technology is zone or terrain aganostic.

With the ADAPTIV system installed, a unit has:

  • The ability to blend into natural surroundings
  • The ability to mimic natural objects and other vehicles
  • A significantly reduced detection range
  • IFF capability

Paradigm Announces A New Advanced Messaging Capability For Their XmarX Personnel Tracking Device

On of the coolest technologies in the field  is the personal GPS tracking device. This is particularly important to folks involved in special operations, where help may not be readily available.

Paradigm, a UK company, developed the XmarX personal tracking device. XmarX gets GPS fixes and transmits positions over the Iridium satellite network, so you can monitor the progress of vehicles, vessels or personnel where ever they go. The XmarX, unlike most other trackers, works anywhere on earth, including the polar and ocean regions. It also supports a web interface that allows you to monitor the tracker.

Paradigm’s offering is compact and rugged meeting and exceeding MIL-STD-810(G). For those that are unfamiliar with the specification, it involves a  range of tests including vibration, repeated drop tests, humidity and temperature extremes. The XmarX is also tested to IP-67 which means that it can survive underwater for at least 30 minutes at a depth of 1m.

At this year’s DSEi Paradigm announced the addition of two-way messaging and support for Bluetooth linking. With the enhancement, the XmarX works both as a standalone unit, and paired using Bluetooth to an Android or Apple smartphone or tablet. With full two-way communications, you can get a real message back from a human-being acknowledging that your message or alert has been received.

Using a Bluetooth enabled smartphone or tablet you can send more complex text messages and use the XmarX as your global messaging companion. You can send a message to any mobile phone via SMS or to any E-mail address.

The RF-7800N-CP  opens the door to  capabilities like receiving, sending, storing and playing video and processing other high-bandwidth data. Having a mobile server will go a long way to supporting thin client applications and much-needed caching at the soldier / operator level without compromising computational requirements.
Resonating across the defense industry is the theme that networked battlefields are here to stay, so look for an increasing amount of mobile technology like Harris’ RF-7800N-CP. However, in all of this excitement, planners should not neglect the pressing need to get commanders and the warfighter more technically savvy.

Elbit Systems Launches a Family of Multimedia Routing Solutions for Tactical Radio Networks at DSEi 2011

There is a great deal of interest in advancing the netcentric battlefield; however, relatively little attention has been given to the infrastructure that supports multi-IP and multimedia applications. It seemed that planners lacked a clear understanding of bandwidth requirements and performance metrics, such as latency, all of which are highly influenced by spectrum and routing horsepower.

This week, at DSEi, Elbit Systems announced  a family of multimedia routing solutions. Multimedia routing makes possible the seemless integration of voice, data and video into one cohesive stream.

The new multimedia routing family enables dismounted soldiers, armoured vehicles and deployed command posts users to share multimedia information in real-time, delivering mission-critical voice, data and video through tactical radio networks.

If You Don’t Believe the UAV Will Become One of the More Meaningful Developments in Our Lives, You Need To Checkout The Parrot AR Drone Quadricopter…

Man’s fascination with flight began when man encountered his first Aves. The concept of soaring into the skies so preoccupied man that he developed aircraft to carry him into that lofty space. Soon after his first flight, man saw aviation in a more creative light; the world’s military recognized aviation’s value in providing support for ground troops and in conducting recognizance. Army’s with air superiority had a distinct advantage over those lacking a powerful and competent air power. In periods of war, pilots flew sortie after sortie often in a state of fatigue. In spite of the efforts made to train more pilots faster, the “human”component of military aviation is a critical constraint and remains so to this date. To overcome this limitation, we needed to create and employ aircraft in an unmanned configuration but the supporting computer and communications technology, needed to create a highly effective tool, was not yet there.

The concept of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is not new; in fact, during the American Civil War the opposing armies used balloons rigged with explosives. The objective was to have the balloon land on the adversary’s munitions depot destroying it. Serious development of unmanned drones began in the 1960’s for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The catalyst was the loss of a spy plane to the CCCP and a U-2 to Cuba. However, it wasn’t until after the Gulf War that the value of the unmanned aerial vehicle became crystal clear. The rest is history and today, military and law enforcement have unmanned assets that range from small man-portable, limited altitude, limited range drones to high performance and high endurance UAVs like the Predator and Global Hawk.

In the near future, you can expect mail, parcels and passengers moved by variants of UAVs. S.W.A.T teams will use them for reconnaissance and intelligence. The Coast Guard and Border Patrols will increase their use for border protection and interdiction, and home owners will use them against their neighbors.

Yes folks, the DHS has nothing on you because for the low-low price of $299 you can own your very own UAV, the Parrot AR Drone Quadricopter.

This little gem is WiFi enabled so it operates at the 2.4Ghz band, it is equipped with forward and downward viewing video cameras. Best of all, it can be controlled with your iPhone or iPad.

Envision yourself sitting in the backyard flying your Parrot AR Drone over your neighbor’s hot tub when they are in an amorous mood. This little dude has a ceiling of 100 ft. MSL (limited only by the software used),  and its electric motors are extremely quiet. The Parrot AR Drone generates enough lift that one could readily equip it with a larger battery and thermal imaging. With a little work and knowhow you can also turn it into a weapon system.

Check out some of the relevant specification:

Parrot AR.Drone lets you see what the pilot sees.
With its built-in Wi-Fi system, you can control the Parrot AR.Drone using the built-in accelerometer in your iPhone®, iPod touch®, or iPad® device. On-board cameras (one forward facing, one facing down) let you see in real-time what the pilot sees as you complete complex flight maneuvers.

No ordinary RC helicopter, the Parrot AR.Drone uses military-grade technology for super-stable flight.
This four-rotor quadricopter employs dual ultrasonic altimeters, a three-axis accelerometer, multiple gyroscopes, and an embedded Linux platform to continuously stabilize itself during flight. AR.Drone can even compensate for turbulence caused by wind. In fact, it’s so easy to control, anyone can fly it.

FNH Ballista Update

I’ve had a couple of questions regarding availability of FNH Ballista in a 7.62×51 caliber, so I did some checking with the folks at FN.

At this juncture it appears that FN has no plans to make the Ballista available to the commercial market and the military side of the house is not planning a 7.62×51 version of the highly acclaimed Ballista. The rifle was specifically designed to address the in theater needs of Afghanistan.

However, I would not rule out a commercial offering at some point in the near future. For now, there is no hurry on FN’s part to take the Ballista commercial.

Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2011

The long-awaited Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2011 was finally delivered to Congress.

A classified and unclassified version of the DoD report was authorized by Section 1246, “Annual Report on Military and Security Developments Involving the People‟s Republic of China,” of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, Public Law 111-84.

I’ve made the unclassified report available embedded as part of this post.

I’ve read the report and was surprised at how gingerly the DoD broached China’s developments. I suppose there’s a need to be very diplomatic so as not to foment discord; however, there are reasons for concern whether supported by fact or simply gut feel.

The DoD’s report identifies modernization efforts, expansions and additions to the Peoples Liberation Army, PLA, that can only be classified as enhancing the Peoples Republic of China, PRC, first strike capabilities.

The DoD discusses an aggressive expansion in Naval assets giving China much more than regional capabilities. Land based ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, over the horizon radars, communications/surveillance/navigation satellites, modernization of its 1.2 million man force and an aggressive cyber and information warfare strategy are areas identified as high priorities within the PLA. The PRC, using industrial partnerships or dual use research programs have been acquiring technologies that are covered by ITAR regulations.

The People’s Republic of China asserts its plans are not expansionist, and I for one believe this to be a credible statement for the time being. In order for China to continue its economic development, it has to be perceived as a responsible and credible member of the international community; yet rhetoric from within the Chinese Communist Party, CCP and the PLA would indicate otherwise. Is it cheerleading and flag-waving, or is it real?

This is the risk that has to be managed by the DoD and Congress…

Cobham Announces Multi Sector Antenna

For the Old Crows, Cobham, a UK Defense Technology firm, announced that it now offers a multi sector antenna. This is great news for a number of reasons but the most significant one is the looming death of the steerable array.

As you know, sector antennas provide wide area coverage in a smaller and simpler package than an omnidirectional antenna. The most significant drawback of sector antennas are the nulls between sidelobes. These are areas of reduced signal strength and low signal to noise ratio. The further away the receiver is from the antenna the larger the area of weak signal.

Cobham’s design provides 3 to 12 sectors with an azimuth beamwidth  from 30° to 120°. Spectrum coverage is from 1Ghz to 15 Ghz at a gain of 10dBi to 17dBi vertical, horizontal circular and ± 45° polarization.

Again, those null points are potential gotchas and the company’s release makes no comments of fills.

For the SOF comm folks the multi sector array could solve a number of practical problems. Check it out.
