Clearing The Smoke !

The 2012 Presidential Election will undoubtedly go down in U.S. History as an event where deliberate  misinformation, directed at the electorate, has reached new heights. Regrettably, it’s not the candidates that bear the blame; rather a media, political action committees, pundits and booksellers that are accountable for this outrage. These individuals have personally so much  at stake that you can no longer look to them for impartiality and enlightenment.

There are two recent incidents that come to mind that illustrate my point.

  1. Governor Romney’s remarks regarding the 47%.

I’ve sat through the video (twice) of Governor Romney’s fund raiser in FL, where he refers to the 47% of the vote he would not get. What he was conveying to his audience is that the campaign’s focus needs to be on the 5% of voters who are undecided; essentially the middle to upper middle class voter. It is no different folks than a marketing executive meeting with his folks to properly place a product. However,in his interest to focus the group, he made a comment that was quite frankly stupid – “…the 47% pay zero taxes…” Take a look!

An individual earning $10,790 in 2011 had a total tax liability of $104 on his federal income tax return. That is an effective tax rate of 1%. Governor Romney this individual paid taxes!

2.   Barack Obama’s redistribution of wealth.

Tapes have surfaced that reveal President Obama as someone who believes in “redistribution of wealth.” Just what is redistribution of wealth?

Redistribution of wealth is a socioeconomic term that describes a progressive tax. When economists say progressive, they refer to a tiered system in which earners with the highest incomes pay a larger percentage of tax scaling down to the lowest earners.

Why are taxes a redistribution of wealth? Governments raise revenue from taxation, those revenues are then allocated among a number of activities that include, infrastructure, defense and social entitlement like Social Security and Medicare. In this manner, taxes are collected and redistributed for the benefit of all.

Some historical background.

  • From 1791 to 1802, the United States government was supported by internal taxes on distilled spirits, carriages, refined sugar, tobacco and snuff, property sold at auction, corporate bonds, and slaves.
  • In 1862, in order to support the Civil War effort, Congress enacted the nation’s first income tax law. It was a forerunner of our modern income tax in that it was based on the principles of graduated, or progressive, taxation and of withholding income at the source. During the Civil War, a person earning from $600 to $10,000 per year paid tax at the rate of 3%. Those with incomes of more than $10,000 paid taxes at a higher rate.
  • In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution made the income tax a permanent fixture in the U.S. tax system. The amendment gave Congress legal authority to tax income and resulted in a revenue law that taxed incomes of both individuals and corporations.
  • The withholding tax on wages was introduced in 1943 and was instrumental in increasing the number of taxpayers to 60 million and tax collections to $43 billion by 1945.

Regrettably, Barack Obama can not take credit for the redistribution of income concept; as you can see it was 1862 when the concept emerges in U.S. History. Since its inception in 1913, the U.S. Tax has been a progressive tax and the concept of taxation is redistribution of wealth.

What most tax reform advocates want to do is eliminate the gap between marginal tax brackets and effective tax brackets. Doing so, makes taxes flatter and eliminates the economic advantage that wealthy individuals have. The result of that is that marginal tax brackets across the board can be reduced. In any scenario, taxing income is a redistribution of wealth.

NavELite Ramps Up Global Distribution with Five New Distributors

NavElite of Palm Harbor,  FL will  be partnering with several distributors of outdoor, military and law enforcement products. The distributors include: 215 Gear™, ADS, Inc., PLATATAC, Potomac River Group and SurvivIT. These distributors will carry NavELite’s wrist-worn, Backlit Magnetic Compass (BLMC) throughout their distribution centers to retailers worldwide.

NavELiteThe NavELite wrist-worn, Backlit Magnetic Compass was invented and patented by two Special Operation soldiers. Operations underscored the need for a reliable backlit compass for use when executing critical missions. It became apparent in the early stages of the Global War on Terror in Afghanistan when soldiers had to routinely reference cardinal directions for tasks such as Close Air Support (CAS), adjacent unit coordination, and SATCOM antenna orientation that the current equipment available did not meet the needs of the Special Operation soldier. The NavELite wrist-worn Backlit Magnetic Compass is a mission-enhancing piece of kit for the ground soldier; reducing nighttime operation signatures and adding to force protection. Thus, NavELite is pleased to offer this next generation, tactical, wrist-worn, magnetic compass for when survival counts.

The wrist-worn Backlit Magnetic Compass from NavELite keeps correct magnetic orientation while providing an on-demand illuminated face to aid with orienteering and direction finding in low-light or no-light situations. This patented technology will allow soldiers in any military unit to acquire cardinal directions day and night with reduced night-time signature.

The NavELite BLMC can be purchased online at www.NavELite.com for a retail costof $79.99. Dealers interested in carrying the NavELite BLMC may contact info@NavELite.com for a Dealer Package and Application.

EADS & BAE Systems In Merger Talks

By: Sal Palma

Two of Europe’s largest defense contractors, EADS and BAE Systems, have entered merger negotiations, which if approved would result in a European defense giant on par with Boeing. The €38 billion deal would alter the global defense industry fabric and blaze a path to further consolidation in the U.S. and European defense sector.

The proposed merger will need the approval of EADS’s board of directors as well as France, Germany, UK and the US. The aggregation of resources, technologies and markets would place the joint company on equal footing with Boeing, which currently has a market capitalization of €41 billion.

Government owners, principally Germany who holds a 22.5% stake in EADS, have serious concerns so it may be quite some time before you see any decisions. However, stockholders should do quite well, especially in light of global government cutbacks and the looming sequestration.

ATK Has Received the XM25 System Contract.

The folks at ATK have reason to cheer.  The company announced September 12th that it received an engineering and manufacturing development contract modification from the US Army’s Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier for its XM25, Individual Semi-Automatic Airburst System.

The $16.8 million contract funds the continuing design, integration, production and testing of fully functional systems to ensure the weapon’s final design meets performance requirements and is production-ready prior to fielding.

The XM25  fires a 25mm airbursting round. Munitions are programmed by an integrated target acquisition and fire control system to burst above a designated target. Soldiers are given the proper aimpoint to account for range to the target and environmental factors like ambient temperature, greatly enhancing the speed at which targets are engaged.

XM25 prototypes were fielded for FOA (Forward Operational Assessment) in Afghanistan from 11/2010 to 05/2012. ATK  will be supporting another FOA scheduled for 2013 with new pre-production prototypes.

Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster – Review

Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster is built solidly, if not overkill. Simply stated, it is a tank. Every effort was made to ensure accessibility without compromising retention. When used in conjunction with a lanyard weapon, it is inconceivable that you’ll ever experience losing your firearm – short of an I.E.D. blast, I suppose. You can run with it, crawl with it, fight and jump with it, and possibly even sleep with it. More importantly in these austere times, when every penny counts, you won’t find a better solution to your holster problems.

Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster may very well be the last tactical thigh holster you’ll ever need.

Confronting A Knife Attack

This video was originally posted by Christophe Scerri, COO, Persa Seguridad, Chile. It dispenses with all of the hokey knife fighting and hand-to-hand tactics; choosing instead to be grounded in reality. As you watch this short video, notice that at no-time does the operator close the assailant. Instead, the operator creates space and uses his support hand to block. The video is narrated in Spanish; judging by the accent I think it was filmed somewhere in Catalunya, Spain; probably Barcelona.

B-MAX’s Ballistic Plates – Product Testing

The folks at Soldier Systems Daily, via Tactical Fanboy, posted video of product testing in progress at B-MAX’s facility in Empoli, Italy. The company’s testing methodology speaks volumes of the confidence in the efficacy and quality of their ballistic plates. The fact testers look like torpedoes for the Genovese Family should not detract from the message.

In the opening few seconds, the tester directs the subject to stand in a specific spot, which could very well be a large piece of Visqueen.

Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster – Upcoming Review

Faced with an increasing array of accessories and sidearms, special operations and law enforcement face a challenge in selecting what is probably the most important part of a secondary weapon system, the holster. It seems like holsters are driving weapon and accessory selection instead of the other way around.

This month, I’ll be taking a critical look at Specter’s Universal Tactical Thigh Holster – as weapon and accessory agnostic as holsters come and possibly your answer to the ongoing holster dilemma.

Mommy, Where Do Jobs Come From?

imagesIf you’ve spent time listening to campaign ads, the media, party pundits and strategists you are probably clueless on the subject of job creation. I would like to help you with that.

In discussing business, and the economy, economists talks about factors of production. The factors of production are land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship. When combined, factors of production result in output for profit.

  • Land includes minerals and raw materials used in producing goods and services, as well as the earth on which the factory or office building is built.
  • Labor is the mix of  laborers (the folks that are engaged in producing your goods or services) and the general workers necessary to run a business. We break labor down into two categories direct labor and indirect labor. Direct labor are the workers that are directly involved with producing your goods and services. Indirect labor are senior managers, office works, sales, advertising, accounting, etc. In other words, everything else needed to run and operate the business.
  • Capital refers to your building, machinery, computers, financial capital (money in the bank or investments). Capital like raw materials is consumed in doing business.
  • Entrepreneurship is the individual that has the idea for a business. The Entrepreneur pays rents to the factors of production. He or she pays for raw materials, land, labor (direct and indirect). He or she also pays for capital. Financial capital is normally paid for with interest payments to a bank or other lender, you may also pay for capital by assigning a part ownership in the business ( e.g. someone buys a machine for you in exchange for 10% ownership in your company, or  someone may agree to lend you $10 million at 3% interest plus 20% ownership of your company. Paying for financial capital can take many forms and it’s almost always negotiable). In any case, the entrepreneur will seek to keep the cost of financial capital as low as possible; very much like costs for all the other factors of production.

These are the things necessary to create a business; they all depend on one another equally. It is the classical symbiotic relationship.

Unlike other factors of production, financial capital tends to have an enormous ego – regrettably unsupported by merit. So, when you hear money managers or equity fund managers lay claim to “creating jobs” take that as oral flatulence. Very much like statements claiming that you, the entrepreneur, did not build your business.

Money managers or equity fund management companies invest other people’s money (OPM) (sometimes their own too) in businesses. For that, they receive rents in the form of interest payments, equity ownership or any combination thereof. Financial capital’s only concern is recovery of the principal investment  at the highest attainable return on investment, commensurate with the risk of the investment. As I said earlier, those returns can take the form of interest payments and/or an equity position (shares in the business). When financial capital accepts an equity position, as rent, its primary concern is in achieving the highest possible share price, which allows them to recover the principal investment plus a suitable return. Period!

So, who is creating the jobs?

It is the entrepreneur who gains access to, and combines factors of production; creating the proper mix and paying the proper rent (price), that allows him or her to supply demand for goods and services at a profit.

The Domestic Oil Production Fantasy!

This is another area that throttles me up, so I’d like to see if I can shed some light on the subject for you.

The oil industry is complex not because the concepts are hard to understand but rather the number of financial instruments associated with oil production and world price of oil. In this article I will attempt to explain why increased domestic production will not translate to reduced prices.

To lay the ground work I need to present two micro economic concepts; supply and demand, and price elasticity. Let me start with supply and demand.

Assume  you decide to make marbles as a business. Your marbles hit the market, people take a liking to them so they start buying them. Soon, people like them so much that they order more, so demand increases. As a supplier you respond to that demand by making more marbles as long as you are making a profit. As demand continues to increase with supply remaining constant the price of marbles rises. Seeing a price increase, consumers decide not to buy so many marbles. Your neighbor seeing that you are making lots of bucks manufacturing marbles decides to get into the business also. With two of you making marbles, supply increases lowering prices so consumers respond by buying more marbles. Your uncle, seeing that you can make a bunch of bucks manufacturing marbles also gets into the business increasing supply further, which further increases demand. The cycle continues until suppliers see diminishing profits resulting from increased competition. So, people thinking about manufacturing marbles see profits are no longer as desirable and decide not to enter the market. Supplies stabilize prices stop falling so consumer demand no longer increases. Economists call this the equilibrium, which is the point at which quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied at a specific price. In a free competitive market, consumers are able to purchase marbles at the best possible price and suppliers are willing to supply the quantity demanded at that price. Lowering the price increases demand but suppliers are less willing to produce, so prices start to rise again reducing demand until equilibrium occurs. This adjusting back and forth is a continuum. This is the supply and demand function and how they interact.

Price elasticity describes how sensitive quantity demanded is to price. Let’s say that we are charged $0.01 for a breath of air. Suddenly, someone says to you  effective immediately a breadth of air will be $0.10. Will you decrease your demand for air? Absolutely not. So we say that a breadth of air is price inelastic – quantity demanded remains the same at any price. You will pay whatever is charged for a breath of air until such time as you can find a substitute. Clean water is yet another example of something that is price inelastic. Because oil is central to energy production and our economy, and there are relatively few alternatives like nuclear power, we say that oil is relatively inelastic. There are some substitutes but not many and for that reason quantity demanded remains unchanged (there is some decline but not by much) regardless of price.

Most of the oil consumed in the world comes from OPEC members. OPEC stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It was  created at the Baghdad Conference on September 10–14, 1960, by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The five Founding Members were later joined by nine other Members: Qatar (1961); Indonesia (1962) – suspended its membership from January 2009; Libya (1962); United Arab Emirates (1967); Algeria (1969); Nigeria (1971); Ecuador (1973) – suspended its membership from December 1992-October 2007; Angola (2007) and Gabon (1975–1994). OPEC had its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, in the first five years of its existence. This was moved to Vienna, Austria, on September 1, 1965.

OPEC’s Purpose:

OPEC’s objective is to co-ordinate and unify petroleum policies among Member Countries, in order to secure fair and stable prices for petroleum producers; an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consuming nations; and a fair return on capital to those investing in the industry.

You can translated this objective to price fixing. OPECs purpose is to fix the price of oil globally.

When I had the privileged to serve my country in uniform some of the crustier CPOs and NCOs would frequently make reference to ” the great home coming f–k fantasy” it was their way of saying make sure “your ass is wired directly to your brain” on a mission. The dissolution of OPEC, so that oil production becomes a free competitive market was for many economics professors THE home coming f–k fantasy, in my years at Graduate School. Although OPEC has been “reasonably” fair in dealing with oil production, they impede free market competition among oil-producing countries, and oil supplies are held at predetermined levels.

Since the formation of OPEC in 1960, demand for oil has skyrocketed driven by China with an economy growing at double-digit rates and currently at 7% – 8 %. India also has an insatiable appetite for oil. So, going back to our opening paragraphs, demand increases but supplies remain controlled, by mutual agreement. Necessarily, oil prices will go up. Why? You know the answer – oil is relatively inelastic thus demand remains just about the same at any price point.

Why increased domestic oil production does not translate to lower fuel costs in the USA.

U.S. oil producers do not compete with OPEC. They sell oil at market price, the OPEC price, which provides them higher profits. Further more, we have a relatively limited number of refineries, so there is a limit to how much gasoline can be produced.  We see this from the increase in domestic fuels prices resulting from refineries being closed in Hurricane Issac’s path.

Now, if YOU are a refinery, would you be more willing to sell gasoline in the U.S. at $3.50 per gallon (3.785 liter = 1 gallon) or would you be more willing to sell to India, China and EU at € 1.20 (on average retail before VAT) per liter ($ 5.72 per gallon). You can probably answer that question yourselves.

The net effect of a pricing difference between the EU and USA is less domestic supply and increasing  fuel exports. When will that stop in the existing environment? When domestic prices equal international prices. This is why we need to create competition in the oil industry. Let me  illustrate my point by pointing you to this link:    http://articles.latimes.com/2011/dec/30/business/la-fi-fuel-exports-20111231

So, if you want to bring oil and fuel prices down what should be your strategy?

  1. Break up OPEC so that oil production becomes a competitive market. In other words oil-producing countries compete with each other, U.S. included, for market share.
  2. Accelerate the development of alternatives. There is no reason on the face of the earth that this country can not move more aggressively to nuclear power. Nuclear plants can deliver more Kw’s per square foot of plant size than coal or oil based facilities.
  3. Or, through the application of well conceived fiscal policy that eliminates or reduces the profitability spread between domestic sales revenue and foreign sales. (This is the least desirable alternative)

PNW Arms Releases Cold Tracer Technology

PNW Arms LLC hails from Potlatch, ID. The company was founded in 2008 with the expressed mission of making superior quality ammunition.

PNW Arms has developed cold tracer technology, which it plans to offer in the commercial market sometime in the fall. The cold tracer, mitigates the incendiary risk associated with using standard tracer ammunition.

Tracers are used in military application to correct fire in darkness or low-light conditions. The tracer has small pyrotechnic charge, which when ignited burns brightly. Current tracer technology also provides illumination in the IR spectrum, which is invisible to the naked eye. A tracer impact with any flammable material or fluid can ignite the target. They are also visible by more than just the shooter; an observer can locate the source of fire by observing the tracer flight path.

How the Rich Invest.

I like being civil and discuss important issues armed with facts; framed in reality. I’m also a mere human and I’ve reached my limit on this rich, middle class and poor crap, and a media (FOX, CNN, ABC, MSNBC) that make no effort to enlighten the communities they serve.

One such issue is the vilification of the wealthy in this country. So, let me share with you a few points you should all consider.

This article is written in the simplest language possible; however, I have the ability to discuss it at an econometric level with anyone who’s incline to get to that level of detail. I call it “How The Rich Invest”

How the Rich Invest

  • All taxpayers work with two tax brackets: a marginal tax bracket and the effective tax bracket. The marginal tax bracket is that tax rate that applies to each new dollar of income. The effective tax bracket is the ratio of your actual tax liability to what you made. For example if your household gross income is $100,000 but with personal deductions and home mortgage interest deductions your adjusted gross income is only $60,000. Your effective tax bracket is based on your income after deductions not your gross. Your effective tax rate is your tax liability divided by your gross income times 100. Effective tax rates are ALWAYS less than marginal tax rates.
  • The wealthy have access to investment instruments that an average taxpayer does not. The result is that wealthy individuals are able to drive their adjusted gross income as a percentage of gross income lower than an average taxpayer, using a variety of strategies. In our example above, the taxpayer was able to lower his or her taxable income to 60% of his gross. A wealthy individual may be able to get his taxable income to 30% or less of his actual gross income. All legal, all good.  In terms of real dollars, the wealthy do pay more. For example an individual working an hourly job after personal deductions etc. ends up with an effective tax rate of  say 13% and his actual tax burden is $3,000. A wealthy individual with a gross income of $10 million may have an effective tax rate of 13% as well, but he paid out $1.3 million in taxes.
  • So how do the wealthy invest? They use a measure that I’ll call risk adjusted, after tax, rate of return – sounds difficult but it is not.
  • Investment portfolios, which is what they’re called, are made up of a mix of products, which when combined reduce risk, volatility and achieve a desirable after tax return, commensurate with risk, on investment. They also use trusts and a variety of “legal” entities to protect their investments, take advantage of tax laws and protect their assets from law suits or other risks. It’s like baking a cake. You add a little of this and a little of that to make the cake rise, taste good and look good. Some recipes take years to evolve and are handed down to subsequent generations. Nothing evil here.
  • Increasing marginal tax rates on the rich, in the absence of a flat tax, does nothing in terms of adding revenue to the Treasury because the wealthy will simply adjust portfolios (the cake mix) to keep their effective tax rate as low as possible. In fact, increasing taxes on the rich is more effective as a placebo to rationalize middle class tax rate increases.
  • So how do we achieve investment in job creation and economic growth? By rewarding the desired behavior? Tax off shore investments, tax short term trading gains in stocks bonds and derivatives. Provide meaningful tax incentives for starting, expanding and modernizing businesses. The fiscal objective should be to make business creation a better choice by achieving a better risk adjusted, after tax, rate of return than the alternatives – like offshore investments, stock market and derivative speculation. When that happens, the wealthy will change the recipe to funnel greater investment in business creation and expansion.
  • The rich are not evil or wicked. In fact they’d like to see you do well so they continue to do well.

I’m feeling much better now. Thank you for allowing me the space and if you know someone that can benefit from this post, please pass it along!

Soldiers Could Soon See Protective Camouflage Paint

Researchers at the University of Southern Mississippi, led by Robert Y. Lochhead Ph.D., have developed a thin camouflage paint that will protect an operator’s face from the 1000+ degree heat of an IED blast.

The new camo paint is a silicon-based compound. Silicon is far less flammable than the existing oil based paint. However, the trick is not to simply provide a protective face covering; it must be pigmented in different colors and incorporate 35% of DEET in order to meet Mil-Spec requirements. A conundrum since DEET is itself flammable.  However, Lochhead and his team were able to mitigate DEET’s flammability by incorporating it in a water-rich hydrogel substance that protects it from heat.

Experiments have shown that the new camo paint can protect the skin surface for as long as 15 seconds before its temperature rose high enough to produce mild first-degree burns. Heat from IED blasts, although extremely hot, last for 2 to 3 seconds and that is well within the new face paint protective envelope.

Lochhead plans to conducted more testing on skin, with plans to expand experiments to include clothing, tents and other materials.

Special Forces Operators Could Be Facing Trouble.

It appears the book “No Easy Day” written by former Navy Seal Matt Bissonnette, scheduled for release on 11-Sep-2012, caught USSOCOM and the DoD off-guard. According  to the publisher, Navy Seal Matt Bissonnette was one of the first team members through the door on the 3rd floor of UBL’s Abbottabad compound.

For reasons that remain unclear, SEAL Bissonnette, writing under nom de plum Mark Owen, did not provide USSOCOM or the Pentagon copies of the manuscript for review. Needless to say, there are serious classification and national security implications.

In an open letter to current, retired and former SOF personnel, Admiral William H McRaven, Commanding Officer U.S.S.O.C.O.M., says:

“Every member of the special-operations community with a security clearance signed a non-disclosure agreement that was binding during and after service in the military. If the U.S. Special Operations Command finds that an active-duty, retired or former service member violated that agreement and that exposure of information was detrimental to the safety of U.S. forces, then we will pursue every option available to hold members accountable, including criminal prosecution where appropriate.”

A warning USSOCOM may have to exercise if they expect to overcome the financial lure of book deals and movie rights. You can rest assured, plans are already in the works for “No Easy Day” The Movie!

Silver Shadow’s TIMNA™ Sniper Weapon System

SILVER SHADOW® Advanced Security Systems Ltd is an authorized exporter of the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD), and authorized Israeli weapon manufacturer. The company’s experience is significantly broader than the production of high quality firearms. It is also heavily involved in areas of Counter-Terror, Intelligence and Homeland Security. I became aware of the company through a casual meeting with a member of IMOD at a SOFIC Conference some years back. I was immediately impressed with the company’s depth and breath.

Israelis, at least those I’ve developed a relationship with, are unquestionably the most pragmatic folks you can encounter. One can easily see that in their arms industry. Their philosophy is centric to the precept that “if it’s not broken don’t fix it and why reinvent the wheel” – a concept evident in their highly successful TIMNA™ Sniper Weapon System (SWS). Start with a proven design, Kalashnikov AKM, fine tune it, and deliver a weapon system that is ideally suited for urban sniper-counter-sniper, and security missions.

The TIMNA™ is a 7.62×51 gas piston design equipped with 8 Picatinny rails. The magazine system borrows from the M14’s 20 round magazine. Finally, the entire enchilada is integrated with a functionally ergonomic sniper stock system that enhances shooter comfort and performance. Voila!

“Fokking Hell”

I ran across a video clip on the Kommando web site. It’s a preview of the movie “Fokking Hell”, a compilation of video clips covering the Dutch mission in Afghanistan from 2006 through 2010. The action takes place in the Uruzgan province.

If the documentary is a well done as the preview it should be a must add to your video library. Here’s a peek at “Fokking Hell”.

Yet Another True Story…

The upcoming RNC in Tampa has generated a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. This morning found me sitting in the Patio at Panera’s having a cup of coffee. My table was at the corner of Swann Ave. and Howard. The light had just turned red, when all of a sudden a black SUV driven by a nice looking gal comes to a stop. While waiting for the light to turn green, she hurriedly puts on lipstick, she then raises her left leg and applies some sort of spray to her crotch. I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my chair.

I thought to my self, she must know that Chris Christie is in town; I say that in jest as I happen to like the Governor’s direct approach but I hear the cannolis are asking for police protection…

This has been another true story! Life is good, and it becomes better the more you laugh about it.

The Civil War of 2016 – U.S. military officers are told to plan to fight Americans

I recently read a Washington Times Editorial “The Civil War of 2016” written in response to a Small Wars Journal piece titled “Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A ‘Vision’ of the Future” authored by retired Army Col. Kevin Benson of the Army’s University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Jennifer Weber, a Civil War expert at the University of Kansas.

In their paper, Benson and Weber, hypothesize a rather interesting scenario, which I found thought-provoking, not from a military science viewpoint, in that it makes reference to Tea Party “radicals” taking control of a South Carolina town with support from the local police and locking up the mayor etc. Here’s the hypothesis.

“ In this paper, we posit a scenario in which a group of political reactionaries take over a strategically positioned town and have the tacit support of not only local law enforcement but also state government officials, right up to the governor. ..

The Scenario (2016)

The Great Recession of the early twenty-first century lasts far longer than anyone anticipated. After a change in control of the White House and Congress in 2012, the governing party cuts off all funding that had been dedicated to boosting the economy or toward relief. The United States economy has flatlined, much like Japan’s in the 1990s, for the better part of a decade. By 2016, the economy shows signs of reawakening, but the middle and lower-middle classes have yet to experience much in the way of job growth or pay raises. Unemployment continues to hover perilously close to double digits, small businesses cannot meet bankers’ terms to borrow money, and taxes on the middle class remain relatively high. A high-profile and vocal minority has directed the public’s fear and frustration at nonwhites and immigrants. After almost ten years of race-baiting and immigrant-bashing by right-wing demagogues, nearly one in five Americans reports being vehemently opposed to immigration, legal or illegal, and even U.S.-born nonwhites have become occasional targets for mobs of angry whites…”

Needless to say, the Benson and Weber paper is so filled with liberal paranoia that it struck a nerve; leading me to wonder if military planners have in fact been directed to formulate  a strategy for this contingency.

Comprehensive full spectrum military planning should devote time to the prospect of conducting military operations in defense of the homeland but does that planning extend to  fighting American citizens.

The prospects are undeniably eerie. “Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A ‘Vision’ of the Future” is an academic treatise. As in all scholarly writing, it is verbose and replete with references and citations but it’s a worthwhile read.

The Washington Times calls the Benson and Weber vision “hard to take seriously;” I found it to have a rather curious undertow. Perhaps it is an insight into what Secretary Napolitano refers to as “Domestic Terrorism.”

2211™ Wrist Light From Surefire – Coming Soon!

Surefire’s Product Development Team has done it again with the introduction of the  2211™ Wrist Light. The rechargeable  tactical light is extremely well thought-out.  There’s an interesting subliminal suggestion as the officer hands the young boy his handheld light. Watch this Surefire video based on reenactment of actual law enforcement scenarios.

New Regs Call For No Tattoos On Italian Soldiers…

Ministero della Difesa (MDD), Italy’s Ministry of Defense would like to see less ink on Italian Soldiers.

In a Telegraph  article by Nick Squires, Italian soldiers will no longer be permitted to have visible tattoos. The regulation specifically targets art that could be considered sexist, racist or aligned with extreme right-wing ideologies. The new regulations also prohibit body piercings, of any sort, visible or not.

The Italian Army’s leadership is concerned about the seeming lack of professionalism and the offensive nature of some of these tattoos; citing cultural differences around the world, and the need to be sensitive to the fact that what is art to one man may be an insult to others.

Italy’s move to tighten body art regulations follow actions taken by the United States DoD earlier this year.

“Tattoos will not be visible above the neck line when the physical fitness uniform is worn. Tattoos will not extend below the wrist line and not be visible on the hands. Sleeve tattoos will be prohibited. (This rule may be grandfathered.)

No visible body piercings will be allowed on or off duty. Males will not be allowed to wear earrings at any time. Ear gauging will be unauthorized.”

British MOD Plans To Slim Down Top-Down

The British Ministry of Defence (MOD) announced today its intentions to thin out the organization from the top-down. Philip Hammond, Defense Secretary, is working on a reorganization that will make the MOD more efficient and far less top-heavy. Secretary Hammond expects to achieve an annual saving of £3.8 million ($6 million USD) from the restructuring. As part of the change, Secretary Hammond plans to exit day-to-day management of the front line commands. Instead, MOD will provide strategic vision and direction. The chance will affect 26 posts presently occupied by civilians and senior level military personnel.

The Defence Secretary said:

“At a time when we are making difficult decisions about Defence spending and have had to accept reductions across the board we cannot ignore the volume of posts at the top. For too long the MOD has been top-heavy, with too many senior civilians and military.

“Not only does this new structure reduce senior staff posts by up to a quarter in the next two years, but it allows clear strategic priorities to be set for the Armed Forces. It will hold the front line commands to account for their delivery and support them in the tasks they are set.”

EA’s Medal of Honor – Warfighter (Video Game)

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) is preparing to release its highly acclaimed Medal of Honor – Warfighter. The folks at EA have gone the extra mile to make this first person shooter game as realistic as possible. In order to achieve its desired level of authenticity, the company has collaborated with Defense Industry suppliers like Surefire and SOG Knives and Tools. A byproduct of the collaboration is Project Honor.

“THE PROJECT HONOR PROGRAM

Project HONOR is dedicated to raising awareness and generating charitable contributions for fallen warriors from the Special Operations Community in honor of the sacrifices they and their families have made for their country. Through unique partnerships program with EA for Medal of Honor Warfighter, many elite weapon and gear manufacturers who equip the Special Operations Community will donate to the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation for the benefit of Project HONOR.

EA believes strongly in the missions of the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and that the awareness and funding generated through Project HONOR will honor and generate significant financial and moral support for the activities undertaken by the foundations in support of this mission.”

EA has come under attack by EUROGAMER.net for working with Project Honor participants to develop and brand Medal of Honor products. Tom Bramwell, Operations Director of Eurogamer Network and Editor-at-Large of Eurogamer.net, launches the first volley in his article “The Medal of Honor Tomahawk” Apparently, Mr.Bramwell finds it objectionable that EA and SOG Knives and Tools collaborated on what he refers to as a “f***ing Medal of Honor tomahawk!

Mr. Bramwell continues saying:

I guess – it’s a video game about war, and it helps pay for the families of people who died in wars to have a slightly better standard of life. Obviously it’s all phrased in the most nauseatingly mawkish language imaginable, but anyone who has ever listened to a politician refer to his or her armed forces is used to that, and the unique way America regards and salutes its military institutions wherever possible is one cultural signifier that is at least transparent to most of the rest of the world.

This is the special bit, though: “In addition to this, select partners have signed up to create and sell exclusive Medal of Honor themed merchandise and donate 100% of the proceeds of their sales to the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and other charities.” I have taken the liberty of emphasising the word ‘merchandise’ because I want to draw attention to the fact they mean things like real gun attachments and tomahawks.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Bramwell never makes his point. What is it about the collaborative effort that he finds objectionable. Is he concerned about public safety or is he simply passing gas to be “en vogue” or perhaps even “un petite coquet.” Clearly, that answer is not available in his article. However, one thing is certain and that is his sentiment about the armed forces.

Mr. Bramwell, I would like to leave you with this one thought. The fact that you are not goose-stepping in tight leather shorts at this very moment is attributable to a group of overworked, underpaid, and obviously unappreciated individuals who gave their lives so that Britain would survive. They weren’t all middle-class liberals. Many were commoners and many well-heeled, but they all shared one thing in common – BALLS THE SIZE OF SOCCER BALLS!

What you need Mr. Barmwell is for a squad of Royal Marines to align your ass with your mind. I think it will make you a much better man!

Meanwhile, I suggest that you spend some time digesting gamer demographics. I cite from the 2011 Sales, Demographic and Usage Data ESSENTIAL FACTS ABOUT THE COMPUTER AND VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY.  The average age of a game player is 37 years of age – 82% of all players are over the age of 18. So, I think their minds and personalities are reasonably well-formed at this point. For the younger players absolutely nothing will or should replace a healthy dose of parental supervision. This is a concept that I’d love to see you ardently support.

Mr. Barmwell you need to make your own decision but I think you owe Electronic Arts, Inc. and SOG Knives and Tools a public apology.
