TEXTRON Systems Light Machine Gun

DSC_1671

Textron Systems is heavily involved with the U.S. Army’s Light Weight Small Arms Technologies or LSAT initiative. The company has developed a replacement for the M249 SAW. The new Light Machine Gun (LMG) uses linked ammunition and capable of a 650 round per minute cyclic rate. It uses a rotating chamber which improves both feeding and ejection. The LMG also uses a long-stroke soft recoil system that improves controllability.

The LMG fires a 5.56 round and will soon be available in 7.62. The weapon is designed for use with cased telescoped ammunition offering a 40% weight reduction and 12% volume reduction. It also features a quick detach field replaceable barrel.

Beretta’s Powered Rail System

DSC_1638

Beretta’s Powered Rail System is based on PPI’s design but has undergone considerable development. The company plans to implement the system as part of the ARX weapon system. The rail is Picatinny compliant. The electronics consists of two isolated busses one to deliver power and the other acts as a data buss. One controller is included to provide a single control point for the accessories. With nothing connected to the rail system, there is no current flow so immersion in water and other conductive material will not discharge or short out the battery pack. This is an important feature for operator and equipment safety.

DSC_1639

Once the accessory is installed, two pressure switches located at the base of the accessory complete the circuit and the accessory will draw power and have access to the data buss. Electrically, the attached devices are not daisy chained, so failure of one device does not break the circuit shutting all devices down. Each accessory forms it’s own circuit.

DSC_1641

Once development is complete, NATO will see it first as an integral component of the ARX carbine weapon system. In the production version, the battery pack is incorporated in the butt stock. The entire system is powered by 6 AA batteries, which is a huge plus. Currently, the Army has been looking at other systems that sit on the M4’s existing rail system, but both Beretta and I agree that stacking rails on top of rails is not the optimal approach.

The inclusion of a data buss means that video, targeting information and other accessory specific data streams can be readily interfaced with existing communications equipment providing a two-way digital data stream.

I was extremely impressed with the design; everything about it makes complete sense. With its acquisition of Laser Devices Inc. Beretta is uniquely positioned to supply turn-key solutions to its NATO customers and is in the enviable position of having complete control over its supply line. I’m looking forward to a live demonstration.

Area Commanders Speak Of Their Needs At SOFIC 2014

DSC_1446_024

Lt. Gen Joseph L. Votel, Commander JSOC; RDML Brian L. Losey, Commander NSWC; BG Kurt L. Sonntag, Deputy Commanding general USASOC; Lt.Gen Eric E. Fiel, Commander AFSOC and Maj Gen Mark A. Clark, Commander MARSOC addressed a packed auditorium outlining their needs to meet the growing SOF commitments.

At the top of that list is a desire for improved intelligence capabilities. Current systems and technologies are effective at detection but fall short, in the panel’s view, at predictive analysis. Special Operations Forces need predictive intelligence to improve accuracy and mitigate the risk of collateral damage.

The second requirement on the Commander’s lists are language and cultural training. In order to leverage Global SOF, US Special Operations Forces need to develop, and or acquire, the language and cultural proficiencies necessary for SOF personnel to interact effectively with their host countries.

Although there have been huge gains in mobility over the years signature and foot print reduction systems and technologies remain inadequate.

The CV-22 remains an important asset in the SOF resource pool and enhancing its capabilities continues to be a priority.

Gen Clark, MARSOC Commander expressed, although not explicitly, a need for additional resources. It was clear, at least to me, from his presentation that MARSOC is overtaxed and some relief is needed.

Glock’s Threaded And Extended Barrel

DSC_1419

I had a chance to spend some time with the Glock folks to confirm availability of factory Glock extended and threaded barrels. Glock confirmed they are working on production of pistols that will ship with threaded and extended barrels. You’ll start seeing those midsummer, and pricing is  still to be announced. Glock also confirmed that barrels for existing Glock owners will be available late this year with pricing to be announced. I checked out one of the Glock 17 barrels and they are top notch, with a 13.5L metric thread pattern

SpotterRF Announces Spotter Shield Mobile at SOFIC 2014

SpotterRF made its debut at SOFIC 2012. SpotterRF is a man packable radar system operating in the X-Band spectrum at 10Ghz. The technology is based the fairly straightforward concept of using a radar system while conducting an operation or at an FOB to provide security. SpotterRF can detect enemy movement in and around the perimeter. The array can be configured with multiple heads and can be tripod, pole or tree mounted to get a clear line of sight.

At this year’s SOFIC conference, the company introduced Spotter Shield Mobile. The Shield Mobile enables up to 360-degree field of view to a range of up to 1500 meters regardless of weather, day or night.  The system includes a embedded NetworkedIO server built-in with a rugged Ethernet hub that cues a low light PoE camera and creates other alarms. Spotter’s technologies reliably detect intruders that entered your perimeter day or night, and in all types of weather; classify the intruder; communicate the existence of the intruder to the response team; and then respond to neutralize the threat prior to that threat inflicting damage. Spotter Shield Mobile meets the first three criteria in a COTS cost-effective package.

For more information about the system visit http://spotterrf.com/slew_to_cue_commercial_force_protection.html.

Laser Devices Inc. Now A Division of Steiner-Optik

As many of you already know, LDI, became part of the Beretta Holdings family in 2013. Also part of Beretta Holdings is Burris Optics. For a relatively short period of time, Burris handled commercial sales of LDI’s civilian product line; marketed as AR-DBAL, AR-SPIR, AR-Laser and two others. Effective immediately, Burris has divested its product portfolio of LDI items.

However, as part of the acquisition structure LDI became a division of Steiner-Optik (Steiner), also a Beretta Holdings company. So, all LDI civilian/commercial and law enforcement sales will be handled by Steiner-Optik. LDI will continue to sell into the military markets.

Beretta Holdings’ longer term objective is the creation one electro-optics division offering a comprehensive line of weapon aiming technologies to a combined market of military, law enforcement and commercial customers globally. Although no mention has been made of Burris Optics in the restructuring, it seems reasonable, given Beretta’s long term objective, to see Burris folded into the planned electro-optics division.

Going forward, all commercial and law enforcement sales of LDI’s products will be transacted through Steiner-Optik, and existing LDI dealers will be expected to become Steiner-Optik dealers as part of this process. Military customers will continue to be served by Laser Devices Inc.

In the next few days, a press article will be released announcing that Steiner’s North American distribution network will handle sales of LDI products to dealers for the domestic commercial and law enforcement markets. LDI will continue direct sales of products for the US military and international markets only. The transition will occur within the month of May 2014.

Ukraine – A Final Analysis

We wrote a piece, “Why We Should Extricate Ourselves From The Ukraine As Soon And As Quietly As Possible.” In it, we laid out some facts that don’t get discussed in the mainstream media but are relevant, once you know of them, to forming an informed opinion on the events unfolding in the Ukraine. We also said that on Friday we would give you our analysis of the situation, and why we think stepping back from that situation is the appropriate decision to make. So, we begin…

The Ukraine and the United States have one very noteworthy feature in common and that is a Constitution upon which a set a laws are erected. Those Constitutions prescribe what a lawful means of changing governments is. The Kiev riots of 19 January 2014, instigated by anti-protest laws announced 16 January 2014, led to a confrontation with police resulting in violence and death, ultimately leading to overthrowing Viktor Yanukovych and ushering in an interim government. That interim government emerges from the ashes of a coup not an election.

It is easy to be sympathetic with that event given characters like Yanukovych[i] but the cold hard reality is that protestors were acting outside the law. Kiev on January 2014 is reminiscent of our own Kent State riots and Lincoln Park riots in Chicago. Step back for a moment and imagine that an ultra-conservative group marches on the nation’s capital and through a prolonged protest gets into a violent confrontation with Capitol Police and subsequently deposing a sitting president and parts of Congress. Here’s precisely what that would mean. Every treaty, covenant, agreement, discussion or negotiation past present and future is null and void because there is no legitimacy to our government. This is precisely what happened in the Ukraine. You can color it any way you’d like but it remains a fact and we make decisions on facts.

As I mentioned in my earlier piece, the Russian Federation has vital economic interests in the Ukraine that account for well over $288 billion dollars of gas and oil exports traveling to EU markets via pipelines in the Ukraine, and through the sea port at Sebastopol in the Crimea. Furthermore, Sebastopol is home to the Russia Black Sea Fleet. It hosts a large Russian military installation, which more than likely houses Russian nuclear weapons. So, without a constitutional government in power in the Ukraine, all treaties or agreements existing between Russia and the Ukraine are null and void, and not worth the paper they are written on. This has the effect of placing not only pipelines and the Russian economy in jeopardy but Sebastopol and its Russian military bases as well. So, what does the Russian government, and more specifically Vladimir Putin do? As we see it, they and he have three options…

1. Do nothing. Sit back and watch it all happen.

2. Begin a dialogue through the U.N.’s Security Council, of which Russia is a member.

3. Intervene militarily to protect vital national interests and take the heat for that decision.

Of course, the risk of doing nothing is completely unacceptable and carries the greatest risk to the Russian Federation. The interim government could renege on pipeline leases or any deal in place with the Russian Federation. To the Russian Federation this means placing in jeopardy roughly 20% – 30% of the Russian economy. It also threatens the EU’s economic stability as 30% of their energy consumption is supplied by the Russian Federation by pipelines traveling through the Ukraine.

Option 2, opening a dialogue through the U.N.’s Security Council, is almost certain to be a futile exercise as anything proposed by the Russian Federation is guaranteed to be opposed by the U.S. and its allies and vice versa. Here’s what leads us to that opinion.

In the less than graceful taped conversation of Victoria Nuland, several things bubble to the surface. The principal stakeholders in this entire situation, the member states of the EU, are disregarded. Saying “Fuck the EU” is not only embarrassing but it signals a disregard for the EU’s positions, policies and processes, when in fact they have everything at stake. Clearly not a good image to paint. It is also clear from transcripts of that conversation that the United States was willing to assist the “right” guy with money, advertising and promotion, which clearly suggests the United States wishes to influence, or attempt to influence, the political makeup in the Ukraine. Lastly and I think more damaging, in the long term, is the not so subtle implication that as a country we do not respect the Ukrainian Constitutional processes for changing governments. Given these facts and positions, any attempt on the part of the Russian Federation to negotiate a solution would certainly have been diplomatically elegant but still leaving the Russian Federation with the same set of problems. So, there was momentum making option 3 a fait accompli for Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation.

We’ve written a total of three articles on the Ukrainian “Crisis”. In the first, “Our Read On The Ukrainian Crisis,” we state that the Russian Federation would not occupy Eastern Ukraine, or any other part of the country other than the Crimea. We’re not clairvoyant and we don’t make predictions we simply analyze and assess based on facts. We based our opinion on two points. First, the Crimea is primarily Russian, and they also have a legal right to be autonomous and to request annexation by Russia, which occurred 21 March 2014. Secondly, the Crimea, especially Sebastopol, is a hub of Ukrainian commerce and technology. On the other hand, annexing or occupying Eastern Ukraine  would be a drag on Russia not a plus. They would be placing themselves in very clear violation of international laws and covenants. Doing so would validate renewed fears of an expansionist Russia.  So, there’s no reason for the Russian Federation to deploy troops and occupy Eastern Ukraine in absence of a humanitarian disaster.

The west’s response has been the application and expansion of sanctions against the Russian Federation which in our view is counter productive we have already seen an impact of the Ukrainian challenge, manifested as a $0.30 to $0.40 jump in gas prices at the pump and we’re just entering the summer travel season. So, sanctions and prolonged uncertainty come at a high price especially in our less than robust domestic economy – as is failure to recognize that a sovereign nation has vital interests it must consider, and that they drive how it responds to neighboring climates and its risk mitigation strategy. Furthermore, the EU is eminently qualified to pressure, and/or collaborate with, the Russian Federation to stabilize and bring about a political climate in the Ukraine that leads to a legal government. To that end, the 25 May elections must move forward and separatists must have a role in that process, if a civil war is to be avoided.

The greatest threat facing our country, and indeed the world, is the growing danger of international terrorism. It inhibits the free flow of capital to underdeveloped regions thus destroying the mechanisms needed immunize developing nations against terror. The Russian Federation can play a vital role in meeting that threat. So, we see inclusion, with the requisite amount of verbal lambasting, and not isolation as being essential going forward.

As to Vladimir Putin, the man has been called a Hitler, tyrant, despot, bully and homophobic. Here’s our read on the man. Note: we do not know him!

Mr. Putin is a judoka (judo player) and in my years of experience with judo, bullies don’t exist, or at least not for very long. The very essence of the sport dating all the way back to Jigoro Kano, is inconsistent with a bully’s mentality. Mr. Putin was raised in the influence of the Church of Constantinople (what we call the Orthodox Church) who views homosexuality as a mortal sin. It is quite possible that his upbringing would account for his views on homosexuality. Vladimir Putin is most likely a moral man but tempered by his year in the KGB and Russian politics. Of course, we have our concerns about members of the press disappearing or being imprisoned but we remain open to the idea that some of that may have been outside of Putin’s control. At least he’s not out executing old babushkas!

In dealing with modern day Russia we need to keep several things in mind. We’ve have had 200+ years to define and perfect democracy, yet as we write, we are still resolving issues of gay marriage and a number of other human rights abuses. The Russian Federation has had less than 50 and Ukrainians a little less, so it will take time for them to evolve. However, a positive evolution will only come from inclusion and not isolation.

So, what will future historians say about Putin, the Russian Federation and the Crimea…?

IPON!

[i] Putin tolerated Yanukovych, but on a number of occasions he expressed his displeasure with him. I would be willing to say that they are not taking long hot showers together and shampooing each other’s head

Coming Your Way This June

DSC_1291

We had an opportunity to test drive the Laser Devices Inc. MK3 Battle Light so we’ll have a review of this very impressive addition to LDI’s product line.

DSC_1306_023

We’re also working on an AR upper build using the new OTIS MSRS rail system. We hope to have all of the parts in by press time (keeping our fingers crossed ). We’ve been checking out the MSRS now for a couple of weeks and remain impressed by how well it is implemented and how true to Mil-Spec the system is. In our MSRS review we’ll show you how easy it is to install, but more importantly answer the question of how well it functions after installed. So, look forward to that in June as well.

Being Considerate

It’s Sunday and Mother’s Day, so I thought I’d head down to Starbuck’s hangout for a while and shoot the breeze with a few of the fellow junkies. I then decided to head out to the local Lowe’s as I needed to buy some grinding wheels and a mandrill for the Dremel tool. It is a gorgeous day so I decided to stop by the bookstore and check out some of the tactical rags like Firepower, Recoil, etc., but having just finished a French Press, my first steps were to head to the men’s room for a nature call before stopping at the magazine rack. I followed another guy in through the door and saw that he made a B-line for the toilet; bypassing a wall of three empty urinals. I took one of the available urinals. In the process, I hear the guy unzip his pants followed by a loud stream. It was obvious he wasn’t there to use the toilet but rather urinate. He couldn’t have been very well endowed because the stream sounded like it was falling from a second story window with not a lot of pressure. Suddenly, the stream stops and you hear the zipping up of trousers followed by a flush. Then, washing of the hands begins. Not that I was listening or anything but it sounded like he was showering in the freakin sink. The faucet is finally turned off, and now the paper towel dispenser starts running and after about 5 sheets dispensed the guy dries his hands and comes out.

Now, why this entire incident bothered me I’ll never know, but it did. So, borrowing from Michael Smerconish here is how I would rewrite this headline.

“A dick should never get in the way of a handicap asshole from using a restroom.”

Please folks, think a little and please be considerate towards your fellow man!

Why We Should Extricate Ourselves From The Ukraine As Soon And As Quietly As Possible.

As citizens and enlightened professional you want to base choices on facts and a well reasoned approach to decision making. I clearly understand that global politics may preclude that process, but at some point in time we really should make a correct decision.

The Ukrainian “crisis” is less of a crisis when you understand the underlying details.

  1. The Ukraine became an nation independent from Russia on 24 Aug 1991.
  2. The Ukraine Constitution was ratified 28 June 1996. It has since been amended twice Dec-2004 and Sept-2008.
    1. The Ukrainian Constitution has written provisions for the impeachment of the head of state. Those provisions have been amended or are presently in the process of being amended.
  3. Roughly 78% of its population is Ukranian and 17% is Russian, the remaining 8% is other.
    1. Part of the cultural dynamics of the Ukraine are driven by attempts at various points since 1991 to establish Ukranian as the national language and eliminate Russian to the detremin of ethnic Russians. It still remains a major internal irritant to this day. The perception by ethnic Russians is that they are and will continue to be discriminated against.
  4. Ukrainians go to the polls to elect Rada (Parliament) and a President. The next Presidential election is scheduled for 25 May 2014. The weakest voter turnout in Ukranian history was in the neighborhood of 49%. Typical turn out is in the 50%-64% range. At it’s lowest point Ukrainian turnout is higher than that of our own country.
  5. You’ll hear mentioned from time to time an event called the Orange Revolution which took place from late November 2004 to January 2005.
    1. The Orange Revolution came after the 2004 Presidential elections where two candidates Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych (this was the guy ousted in the recent coup)ran in opposition. The Orange Revolution was spearheaded by Yulia Tymoshenko – leader All-Ukrainian Union “Fatherland” party. Before leaving the Orange Revolution let’s talk about Yulia for a second. She served as Prime Minister from Dec-2007 to March-2010 and in 2005 from January to September. Yulia, was accused of embezzlement and convicted in Oct 2011. She served time. During her time in office she became one of the wealthiest individuals in the Ukraine. Interestingly enough, she made her money in the natural gas business at a time when the Russian Federation was complaining that gas and oil was being syphoned off as it passed through Ukrainian pipelines on its way to the EU.
    2. Victor Yanukovych won the run-off election in 2004 but as a result of the Orange Revolution, domestic and UN international inspectors were brought in to validate the results. Although no clear proof that the 2004 elections were rigged, the Orange Revolution succeeded in having the results of the 2004 election annulled. The Ukrainian Supreme Court ordered that a new vote be held and in that election Yushchenko received 52% of the vote and Yanukovych  got 44%. Two presidential elections have been supervised by international and domestic monitors with no proof of vote tampering.
    3. In 2010 Yushchenko was defeated by Yanukovych in a supervised election and named president.

Alright, without declaring an Eastern European History major, this should give you a reasonable amount of background. So now let’s talk about the Russia piece of the equation.

  1. Russia has vital interests in the Ukraine. They come in two forms. First, all of the Russian pipelines carrying oil and natural gas to the EU run through the Ukraine. Second, The port of Sevastopol (In the Crimea), where Russia has a large military installation, is Russia’s only warm water port, that’s available 365 days a year, with access to the Mediterranean Sea, Suez, etc.
    1. Gas and Oil exports account for roughly 20%-30% of the Russian Federation’s economy. It also accounts for a large chuck of its hard currency.
      1. crude petroleum oils: US$173,668,305,000, other petroleum oils: US$91,529,091,000 and light petroleum oils and preparations: US$17,638,522,000.
      2. Natural gas (liquid state): $5,510,958,000.
      3. In total, energy exports excluding coal account for roughly $288.3 billion dollars.
    2. Sevastopol  is the biggest non-freezing commercial and fishing seaport on the Black Sea.
      1. Foreign trade in goods: 109 million USD of exports, 41 million USD of imports, with the trade balance being + 57 million USD. So it’s a busy port with the Russian Federation accounting for the lions share of both imports and exports.
      2. Lastly, Sevastopol has been home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet dating back to Katherine The Great.

Other factors to consider.

  1. The infamous Victoria Nuland & Geoffrey Pyatt conversation You can read the actual transcript and BBC analysis.
  2. Reading the transcript and listening to the published piece of the conversation, it was pretty clear to me that Victoria was not trying to give Geoffrey a woody.

As you read this, keep in mind that nothing has been stitched into a story, I am simply laying out facts that you may or may not be familiar with. This coming Friday, we’ll give you what we think the story should be, but we encourage you to form your own.

Have a great weekend, be safe and visit our site often. Send us your questions and we will always endeavor to answer them!

If you’re one of the thousands that carry or keep a compact or sub-compact pistol for self and home defense, adding a laser sight makes a great deal of sense. The problem with doing that has traditionally been the very limited rail space available on these weapons. LaserLyte’s SCV4 FSL-4 may very well solve that problem for you…

Marines Don’t Want To Exchange Pay For Kit…

I want to share a piece published this morning in Military.com’s Kit Up “Grunts Don’t Want to Exchange Pay Raises for New Kit” by Matthew Cox, May 5, 2014 · It is unredacted.  It points to a greater issue, which is how do you deal with increasing personnel costs and still maintain troop levels to support present and future commitments. Suggesting that Marines are willing to exchange pay for kit seems like a poor way to rationalize the need for controlling personnel costs to service members. I think most of our service men and women are mature, and wiser than we give them credit for.

Survey2014-ControversialTestimonyU.S. combat troops know the importance of quality kit, but don’t take their pay raise away to pay for it.

Military.com published the results of its pay-and-benefits survey today. It showed that nine out of 10 active-duty service members oppose the Pentagon’s proposals to reduce their pay raises and basic allowances for housing.

Responses from more than 8,400 service members, their spouses, veterans and retirees show overwhelming opposition to the Pentagon’s recommendations to curb personnel costs by reducing military benefits to include pay, housing, commissary stores and health care. Troops also resoundingly rejected suggestions from the top brass that pay raises aren’t “on their minds.”

Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Michael Barrett told Congress recently that his Marines would prefer better equipment and training versus a 2 percent pay raise and protected benefits. Barrett also said “Marines don’t run around [asking] about compensation, benefits, retirement modernization. That’s not on their minds.”

Almost all of the active-duty respondents — 96 percent — said they disagreed with such comments.

Reader Question Regarding My Post Of Ukrainian Intelligence Photos

A week or so ago, I posted a short piece centered around the Ukrainian intelligence photos allegedly linking Pro-Russian separatists to Russian military and/or intelligence services. You can revisit the article here.

My point was not to give you an online class in photo intelligence and analysis. There are a great many things that are involved in conducting photo analysis; however, if you’ll take a close look at those pictures you can see anomalies like differences in proportions and a variety of other clues suggesting the pictures may have been doctored. My objective is to get the reader to be a more critical observer and to express concern over a media that seems to question nothing. To say that the Ukraine has submitted positive proof of the alleged Russian military involvement is gullible and lackluster.

Gear Review: Streamlight’s TLR-2 G

Streamlight’s TLR-2 G is a continuation of the company’s expanding professional grade weapon mounted accessories. I found it an exceptional laser / light accessory for your pistol and carbine. The green laser is highly visible in any light condition and the 200 lumen white LED is made to order for limited range engagements. So, I gave it a thumbs up for close quarter application and by definition home defense. Read my review…

One of the many reasons I love this industry, and happy to be a part of it, is the generosity flowing from organizations like Arsenal, Inc and K-Var. No other industry devotes more money and resources to training and education, especially where our future generations are concerned. The kids  coming up through the ranks today will  hand down, for generations to come, a love for the 2nd Amendment, and they will also pass along the knowledge and skills they accumulate as a result of programs and activities like these. We would like to recognize Arsenal, Inc and K-Var Corporation for their citizenship and generosity.

                                                                   Press Release

LAS VEGAS, NV– K-Var Corp. and Arsenal, Inc., have joined together in an effort to give back to our loyal customers and to help educate local groups in gun safety and recreational activities. In the current political climate, we have found that the impact we make outside of the industry is just as important as the impact within. Last month, Arsenal and K-Var joined together once again to donate over twenty-five thousand dollars to the Las Vegas Area Boy Scouts of America in sponsoring the 7th Annual Arsenal Sporting Clays and Scout Steel Challenge. To aid the fundraising efforts of the BSA, several of our firearms were donated for a silent auction to benefit the education of scouts throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
In addition to our local work, K-Var Corp. and Arsenal, Inc., recognize the important and invaluable work being done by our friends at the National Rifle Association. Our donation of a Gold Edition MTK90 Jubilee Rifle to the NRA auctions was recently won for $21,000.00. Those funds can now be used to help fund the firearm education of the general public.
We hope to continue our local and national work to benefit you, our loyal customers and friends, and we also hope that you will do the same. Every donation to the NRA, the FAIR Trade Group, or to other organizations can make a difference for the future.

TRACKINGPOINT Precision Guided Firearms

{7b57a084-55ac-45ea-b6c9-95efa91d7bd6}_TP-AR-Web

Trackingpoint Labs, Austin, TX,  introduced a couple of years ago technology that it markets under the trade name of XactSystem. The system consists of several assemblies, the electronic weapon trigger, laser range finder, ballistic computer and image processor all integrated under software control to create a complete fire control system for shoulder fired weapon systems. Once the target is electronically tagged, the Trackinpoint technology derives and continuously updates a firing solution that even considers lockup time. Thus, it allows the shooter to make consistent long range single shots, against difficult targets; including moving targets.

Remington Arms has licensed the technology, and the U.S. Army is currently evaluating it.

Prospective buyers can expect to pay an early adopter price of about $10,000 which includes the firearm.

High Speed Gear Introduces Two New TACOs

2014_05_01_22014_05_01_3

My favorite high speed nylon manufacturer has just introduced 2 new TACOs to their line.

First is the Extended Pistol Taco® shown on the left will accommodate a baton, high-cap pistol and SMG magazines, large flash light or just about anything that needs a pouch and retention systems longer than a pistol Taco. Dimensions: 1.75″H x 1.2″W x 6.25″ L. The Extended Pistol Taco sells for $28  and is available now.

Second is the HCM Taco®, High Capacity Rifle Mag Pouch, shown on the right. This new pouch works well with the Surefire 60 and 100 round magazines as well as the Saiga shotgun magazines and even a radio. Dimensions: 3″H x 1.2″W x 5″ L. The HCM sells for $35 and is available now.

If you’ve never tried any of the HSGI Taco’s you need to do that and experience for yourself what a truly well designed magazine pouch will do for you.

Bushnell Announces The Elite Long Range Hunting Scope

The scope is 3-12 x 44 with a 30mm tube, and it’s the first member of the brand new Elite Long Range Hunter family of riflescopes offered by Bushnell. Its origins are clearly tactical, and was developed along the highly regarded Elite Tactical scope line. Bushnell didn’t simply repackage an Elite Tactical or Target scope, the LRHS is purpose built and designed to meet the needs of hunters for use at extreme ranges.

The LRHS features the G2H reticle, which is a milradian First Focal Plane reticle specifically designed to allow hunters to range targets then holdover and correct for wind. The scope has a low profile tactical style elevation turret, and features a  Zero Stop mechanism.

The LRHS has fully multi-coated lenses that boast 95% light transmission. Additionally, Bushnell’s RainGuard HD coating makes water and fog bead up and roll off lens surfaces so that targets can be seen in adverse conditions.

The Elite LRHS 3-12x 44mm riflescope is available for a minimum advertised price (MAP) of $1499.99.

Magpul Industries Announces M-LOK Modular Locking Accessory Mounting System

In the last three years or so, considerable effort has been placed into eliminating the ubiquitous cheese grater, more formally known as the quad rail. The quad rail provides 1913 Picatinny mounting surfaces at the 12o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock position of a free float aluminum handguard that usually required removal of the existing barrel nut and replaced by a handguard specific one. The prevailing thoughts from the local intelligentsia was that quad rails were unnecessarily heavy (questionable in my mind) and made for an uncomfortable gripping surface; needing rail covers, etc., etc.

Industry responded by introducing the key mod rail system, which uses a mechanism similar to those found on shop shelving, to attach rails along the handguard were they are precisely needed and nowhere else. The gain of course is a lighter and more comfortable mounting system.

Magpul Industries’ alternative to the key mod approach is the M-LOK. Magpul describes M-LOK as a direct attachment method for hard mounting accessories to a negative space mounting point. Now for the good news.

M-LOK system will be open source, meaning that it is license free and there’s at least 20 manufacturers that have made a commitment to the M-LOK. How successfully M-LOK will compete with the cheese grater or key mod system remains to be seen but if it lightens the load without compromising accessory stability it may very well be money in the bank for a lot of manufacturers.

You can read and download the M-LOK specification here.

GEAR Review: CTC’s Rail Master Pro

DSC_1242_007

Truly exceptional products need to be talked about and this is one weapon mounted laser / light that fits that description. Aluminum housing, compact and rugged design are all nice attributes that you can talk about but it’s when you start using it that you begin to appreciate just how well thought out the Rail Master Pro is.

Moms Mabley Straight From The Chitlin’ Circuit

Moms Mabley, a.k.a. Loretta Mary Aiken (native North Carolinian), was a pioneer comic straight from the Chitlin’ Circuit. Her Vaudeville style of standup comedy gave rise to artists like Whoopi Goldberg,  Eddy Murphy, Bill Cosby and Nipsey Russell.  I love her comedy, so I thought I’d share this short clip of Moms. Most of her comedy was rascal-ish but genuinely funny. Enjoy the clip and have a great weekend!

AR DIYs will have more options in their choice of assembly and disassembly tools for their AR project. Magpul Industries has announced two new products, MAGPUL ® ARMORER’S WRENCH – AR15/M4 and BEV™ BLOCK – AR15/M4.

273_1411_thumbThe Armorer’s wrench is available now at an M.S.R.P. of $79.95 and it has some pretty interesting features.

  • Solid steel construction with grip-enhancing phosphate finish.

  • Mounts securely in a vise and provides support for both billet and forged upper receivers.

Press Release

Remington® Introduces Model 700TM Ultimate Muzzleloader®

Setting the New Standard for Ballistic Performance and Reliability

Madison, NC – Remington Arms Company, LLC, (“Remington”) is pleased to announce the Model 700 Ultimate Muzzleloader – the most technologically advanced in-line muzzleloader on market today.

The Ultimate Muzzleloader sets a new performance threshold with the use of a closed breech system that provides a cleaner and hotter ignition. The AMP (Accelerated Muzzleloader Performance) ignition system uses a uniquely-sized brass case with a Remington 9 ½ large magnum rifle primer that is push fed into the breech plug creating a gas seal in the flash hole of the primer (see cutaway below). The result allows the shooter to load up to 200 grains of powder for increased range, energy, and on-game performance.

Using 200 grains of Triple Seven® Pellets in combination with Barnes’ Spit-Fire T-EZTM 250-grain muzzleloader bullets, the Model 700 Ultimate Muzzleloader gives the shooter the ability to reach velocities over 2400 fps. With Remington’s patented breech plug technology, shooters can now experience centerfire-like performance and accuracy out of a muzzleloader.

 clip_image004

clip_image002

In addition, the primed brass is easier to handle in the field compared to handling small 209 shotshell primers and spare primed cases can be stored conveniently in the compartment below the receiver.

Why Good Analysis Is Essential To Understanding And Defining A Mission

The essence of problem resolution and decision making is that ALL data elements are assessed using the same light and microscope. It is the only method that will reliably produce the correct answer.

The New York Times ran a piece “Ukraine Provides Evidence of Russian Military in Civil Unrest” showing pictures of pro Russian separatists that have been allegedly “linked” to Russian special forces and intelligence services. So let’s take a look at this and see how it shapes up….

0421-for-webukraine-artboard_1-0

The individual shown in the picture on the left has been identified by Ukranian sources to be a member of Russian special forces by the patch on his left arm. Now, this was a 2008 photo taken in Georgia. Let’s think about this for a moment. The guy is wearing multicam and he’s wearing a Russian special forces patch. How many guys do we know that suite out in multicam and wear U.S. military patches. Somehow, this makes the guy a Russian SOF. Everything that he is wearing with exception of the biker beard can be worn and is worn by the airsoft community on the planet. Not to mention self-fashion “militias,” and accessible for purchase on the internet.

Now take a look at the guy sitting down looking at the camera, his head is approximately 10 inches high. If you superimpose his head on the upper torso of the individual in question, you can reasonably estimate that our subject has a waist to top of the head dimension of 36 to 40 inches. Unless the guy has tiny legs, and his ass is dragging the ground you can reasonably assume that his lower torso is of equal proportions. So we have a likely overall height of 72 to 80 inches. We can draw a conclusion that this individual has a height of 6 feet or more.

Let’s move forward to 2014…

0421-for-webukraine-artboard_1-0

Now let’s take a close look at the two pictures on the left. The top photo was allegedly taken in Kramatorsk and the bottom photo was taken Slovyansk. Both pictures are allegedly taken this year in 2014. Take a look at the bottom photo with respect to the other individuals does the subject circled in the photo appear to be 6 feet tall or more? Not to my eyes.

So we need to be cautious about formulating plans and assessing conditions or basing problem solving on the basis of poor analysis.

Right here and now, I want to separate decision making  from swaying public perceptions.

Organizations, like the New York Times, display a remarkable propensity for testing absolutely nothing. Is it possible that the individual depicted in the 2008 and 2014 pictures is one in the same, yes it is, but on a decision tree that leg would receive a probability of less than .05 from me. Readers need to develop a critical eye, and regardless of what side of the fence you sit on with this Ukrainian issue, examine all data under the same light and using the same microscope.
