OTIS Technology To Debut New Products At Shot Show 2015

Otis Technology is excited to announce several new products for 2015 debuting at the SHOT Show on January 20th – 23rd in Las Vegas.

Otis has expanded the Ripcord® product line by adding three new sizes –  .243 cal/6.5mm, .270 cal/6.8mm and 12 ga.  The Ripcord® one pass cleaning tool was introduced in August 2013 and quickly became a top selling product.  Its Nomex® fiber coating and unique shape make for an aggressive 360 degree cleaning – properly from Breech-to-Muzzle®.  The Ripcord® can be used at any angle or orientation, making cleaning a breeze.

“Since the introduction of the Ripcord®, we’ve been overwhelmed by the success of the product line.  This year, we’re proud to introduce two new rifle calibers as well as a solution for 12 gauge shotgun cleaning,” states Frank Devlin, National Sales Manager.

In addition to the Ripcord®, Otis has added another tool to their product offering – the Star Chamber Cleaning Tool.  Available in 5.56mm and 7.62mm, this tool quickly and effectively cleans the star chamber area of MSR/AR style rifles.

“At Otis, we recognize the need for tools and cleaning products to make gun cleaning less of a hassle.  That’s why we’ve introduced such products as the Ripcord®, B.O.N.E.® Tool, and now the Star Chamber Scraper Tool.  We realize that some firearm owners don’t enjoy cleaning and these tools will help make it easier – since maintenance is a very important part of firearm ownership,” states Len Nelson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Otis Technology has also partnered with Snow Lizard products to distribute a line of power products and protective cases for the iPhone and iPad.  New for 2015 are the SLXtreme phone case for iPhone 6 and a version for the iPad with an added navigation feature.

Lastly, Otis will be debuting two new forms of ear protection. The Ear Shield offers all the benefits of electronic ear protection without the bulk or the batteries.  It is available with an NRR of 26dB or 31dB.  Additionally, Otis has partnered with Flugz® to offer a formable ear plug.  This newly patented product provides comfortable, reliable and affordable hearing protection.

Tout Est Pardonne’ , which translates to “Everything Is Forgiven” speaks volumes to the events that have unfolded in France over the past week; yet, we continue to see media stereotype a world religion by the actions of thugs and that’s sad as it does nothing to shed light, but makes reform that much more difficult to achieve.

Young Muslims across the world are being hoodwinked into to believing that Islam is under attack and that martyrdom is a solemn duty and only way out of a present circumstance. What Muslim youth needs to see, and understand, is that Islam’s true future does not hinge on martyrs but in the moms and dads they will be, in the children they will raise, in the doctors, lawyers and teachers they will become, in the science and engineering they will advance and in the leadership they will provide. Armed with that knowledge perhaps the youth of Islam will see through a recruiter’s smoke and mirrors a reality that screams “die so I can rise to power,” and their unified response will be a resounding “Après Vous!”

Did He Mean Multicam or OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern) ?

TGIF readers, congratulations  on successfully navigating through another week in the New Year. Now hear this, I recognize that few of you are pacing back and forth wearing a hole in your teakwood flooring in anticipation of what camouflage pattern the Army will finally end up using to replace ACU;  however, the World Wide Web is “abuzzing” with Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno’s use, or misuse, of the word “Multicam” in lieu of OCP when discussing the Army’s future direction of standard issue camouflage patterns, at his last town hall meeting . So, we’ve called this Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic  Did He Mean Multicam or OCP. OR,  is General Odierno signaling that he’s not about to piss away 3, or so, Billion Dollars worth of kit to standardize on a camouflage pattern that is virtually indistinguishable from the existing Multicam pattern.

Tells us what you think, and as with all of our shoot-the-shits, profanity is allowed, you don’t have to support your views with facts, you can call anyone names or change subjects all together.

Have A Great Weekend Everyone!

Consumer Electronics Show Gets A Peek At Tracking Point’s 338 TrackingPoint (338TP)

Code-named ‘Mile Maker’, Tracking Points’s 338 TP  features the patented ‘tag and shoot’ technology affording shooters a more precise platform capable of delivering an accurate shot at ranges of up to one mile. The tag and shoot technology ranges, compensates for target movement and calculates external ballistics automatically.

The 338TP can wirelessly stream real-time shot video that is visible in digital shooting glasses, a la Google Glass. TrackingPoint uses the Recon Instrument Jet, which runs on a dual core processor running Tracking Point’s ShotView software. The Jet is GPS enabled, supports both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity and comes with an HD camera.

The shooting glasses enable users to shoot around corners and covered positions. The Bluetooth and WiFi enabled glasses allow for peer-to-peer networking with other shooters. The system also allows users to record video and voice for later review or to share with others.

Pricing is till quite high at over $27,000 for the system but that’s relative when compared with the level of sophistication delivered. BTW, that does include the rifle , which is specially modified with trigger sensors.

Advanced orders have begun in January 2015 and shipments will begin in June.

Streamlight Inc., Best Know For Its TLR Series Of Weapon Mounted Lights, Announced The TLR-1 HPL High Lumen Long-Range Rail Mounted Light.

jpeg

Streamlight® Inc., has introduced the TLR-1® HPL™ (high performance, high lumen) rail-mounted strobing light, which combines long-range lighting capability with blinding white light.  The TLR-1® HPL™ offers a775 lumens measured system output, 48,000 candela peak beam intensity, and a beam distance of 438 meters, the new tactical light also is available in a remote switch model.

“The new TLR-1 HPL is the ‘whole package’ because it functions as both a high lumen light, while also delivering a brighter ‘hotspot’ which puts more light on a target at a distance,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “For example, while other downrange beam patterns would illuminate a target’s head and shoulders, the HPL beam lights up the target’s entire upper torso. That makes it a powerful tactical tool for law enforcement professionals, military personnel and other first responders as they perform room clearing, search operations and other maneuvers under low-light conditions.”

The TLR-1 HPL uses a shock-proof C4® LED to provide its exceptional brightness, and a deep dish parabolic reflector to produce its long-range targeting beam while also optimizing peripheral illumination. The light’s strobe feature offers the added benefit of being able to signal in the field or disorient targets.

The new light delivers 1.25 hours of continuous regulated run time and 1.75 hours to the 10% output level.  It comes with two 3 volt, CR123A lithium batteries.

The TLR-1 HPL can be quickly mounted to a broad range of weapons using Streamlight’s one-handed snap-on/tighten interface, which keeps hands away from the muzzle. It mounts directly to all MIL-STD -1913 (Picatinny) rails and weapons with Glock-style rails.  A key kit with five interchangeable keys is included to securely fit the light to the broadest array of rails.

Both the standard and remote switch models of the TLR-1 HPL offer a tethered battery door and latch mechanism, which prevent door loss while providing easy battery replacement.

The new light weighs 5.3 ounces (5.6 ounces with remote switch), measures 4.83 inches in length (5.25 inches with remote switch), and is constructed with 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized finish.  Featuring extensively live-fire tested, impact-resistant construction, the light has an operating temperature range of -40o F to +120o F.  It also is IPX7 rated for waterproof operation to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

The TLR-1 HPL comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. The standard model has an MSRP of $222.85 and the remote switch model has an MSRP of $284.00.

Reebok Kryptek Dauntless Ultra-Light Boot

ImageGenImageGen (1)

I was checking out the new Dauntless Kryptek boots from Reebok; I was pretty impressed by them. It’s not a stiff boot, so don’t expect a huge amount of ankle support, although they’re 8” high. However, they are very light with a wide base, which should make them very stable and comfortable for prolonged use. Excellent training boot or every day wear. M.S.R.P. $129, but be sure to shop around to get the best price. It’s a nice boot.

  • Type: 8″ Tactical Boot
  • Toe: Soft Toe
  • Upper: Seamless 1000D Nylon
  • Color: Black w/ Kryptek™ Typhon™
  • Lining: Moisture Wicking Nylon Mesh
  • Insole: Removable Injected EVA Cushion Insert
  • Outsole: Dual Density; Rubber Bottom and Lightweight Injected EVA Cushion Midsole
  • Special Feature: 100% Non-Metallic

Exactly What Is An Aerodynamic Stall

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is prompted by recent media coverage of the Air Asia tragedy. If you’ve been watching the news, you’ve gotten 24 x 7 information on the Air Asia crash. Part of that coverage was a discussion of concept referred to as an aerodynamic stall. So, I’m going to touch on it here, hopefully with greater clarity.

Any fixed wing and rotary aircraft relies on lift to achieve flight. To achieve lift, we design surfaces that look like this…

If you look at the cross section of a wing on an airplane, or the rotor blades on a helicopter, this is what it looks like.

In addition to shape, we need to have airflow over the lift surface. In a helicopter, a motor turns the rotor, and as the rotor turns it generates lift. In an aircraft, we use thrust to push the wing through the air.  Because of the shape of the lift surface, air flow at the bottom of the wing surface exerts greater pressure against the wing pushing the airplane up.

An aerodynamic stall is created when the airflow over the wing surface is disrupted to the point where lift is no longer generated.

You’ve also heard about something called the angle of attack, which is a technical term to describe the relationship of the centerline of the wing to the level horizon. when the angle of attack increases lift increases, when the angle of attack decreases lift decreases. This is an envelop with min max parameters influence by several factors.

One last concept that I want to discuss is speed. There are three types of speed that we can discuss. The first is indicated airspeed. This is the speed indication that’s most relevant to flight. It is the speed detected by the pitot tubes. I’ve included a figure of a typical pitot system below.

The second is true airspeed which is a computed value that takes into consideration density altitude.

The last speed value is speed over the ground. This is the same as the speed indicated by your car’s speedometer. It is relevant, principally, for navigational purposes. For example, a few years ago, I flew from Virginia to Elizabeth City, NC., I had an indicated airspeed of 140 knots but I was able to catch a 40 knot tail wind. So, my speed over the ground was about 180 knots. Had the tail wind been a headwind, my speed over the ground would have been 100 knots but my indicated airspeed remains 140 knots.

Airplanes operate on indicated airspeed. There is a slew of airspeed parameters applicable to flying; they are dependent on the type and model of aircraft, and its aerodynamic configuration – meaning weight, flaps down, amount of flap used, landing gear extended, etc.

When a pilot climbs he or she applies full power and increases the wings’ angle of attack to achieve a specific indicated airspeed. Even with full power applied, as the angle of attack is increased, indicated airspeed decreases. If the angle of attack continues to increase, indicated airspeed continues to fall, and when the indicated airspeed drops below a certain value, as specified by the manufacturer, the wing loses lift and the airplane falls. This is an aerodynamic stall.

Forgetting for a moment mechanical and electronic stall detection systems, a pilot knows he’s  in a stall because the airplane shakes and starts buffeting; control surfaces don’t respond. To recover from a stall, the pilot needs to push the nose of the aircraft down. As indicated airspeed increases you’ll feel the airplane start to level out and control surfaces begin to work again.

Aerodynamic stalls are critical at low altitudes; for example,  during landing or takeoff simply because you don’t have time to recover. At high altitudes, a pilot has enough time to recover.

In the case of Air Asia, one possible scenario is this…

Pilot is straight and level, at flight level 320, with an indicated air speed of 450+ knots. To avoid thunderstorms he initiates a left hand turn. So, he lowers the left wing reducing its angle of attack and increasing the angle of attack on the right wing. He hits a strong up draft pushing the right wing up even further so the right wing stalls completely. The pilot tries to correct and in the process completes a full aerodynamic stall. If the aircraft drops flat, like a pancake, with little forward motion, all of the control surfaces would fail to respond. So you’re probably looking at a combination of weather and pilot error as to the cause of the crash. It’s speculation on my part but it is one possible cause. What do you think?

Be sure to let’s us know and as always… No rules apply

Have A Great Weekend Everybody!

UZI PRO & UZI PRO SB Pistols To Make La Grande Entrée at 2015 SHOT Show, Booth 15238

IWI US, Inc. announced the repatriation of the long-awaited UZI® PRO Pistol for America’s consumer market. The UZI® brand is world renowned with sales of over 2 million carbines and pistols worldwide since 1963. Visitors to the 2015 SHOT Show in Las Vegas in January 2015 will get the first look at these new IWI handguns.

IWI US UZI PRO Pistol

The UZI® sub-machine gun (SMG) was designed and patented by Uziel Gal who gave the production rights to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. After initial testing by the IDF, the Ordnance Corps ordered 8,000 units and the love affair with the world’s most iconic 9mm platform began.

The UZI® PRO Pistol and UZI® PRO Pistol SB are the latest evolution of that storied design, now featuring the most advanced firearms technologies. Based on the famous UZI® SMG, the UZI® PRO is purpose-built with only one goal – uncompromising performance and reliability on a robust design. This 9mm Luger Parabellum version for the American public sports an advanced polymer pistol grip that reduces weight and incorporates an integrated magazine release button for fast and easy magazine changes. The cocking handle is located on the receiver side allowing for a full-length Picatinny rail on the top receiver cover. A short Picatinny rail is also incorporated into the polymer body, mounted below the barrel, perfect for additional accessory placement.

Two versions of the UZI® PRO Pistol will be available in the US. The first is the basic pistol pictured above. But perhaps the most exciting news is that the UZI® PRO Pistol will also be offered with a side-folding Stabilizing Brace, the UZI® PRO SB, produced exclusively for IWI US by SB Tactical LLC, designers and manufacturers of the original SB15 and SB47 Pistol Stabilizing Braces that have reinvigorated the market for large frame pistols in the US.

IWI US UZI PRO Pistol with Stabliizing Brace

IWI US UZI PRO Pistol with Stabliizing Brace

Originally designed as a means for persons with limited mobility to operate and fire the AR-15 pistol, it soon became clear to shooters across the USA that by adding a Stabilizing Brace to their large frame pistols, they could achieve greater accuracy while enjoying an enhanced shooting experience through improved firearm stabilization and control.

The custom adaptation of the Stabilizing Brace to the UZI® PRO SB takes the application of large frame pistol control and stabilization to a new level. With the IWI brace’s unique side-folding feature, the UZI® PRO SB can be fired with or without the brace extended depending on the shooters need. With the brace in the folded position, storage space required in your safe or range bag is minimized.

The new UZI® PRO and UZI® PRO SB feature three safety mechanisms; a conventional manual thumb safety, a firing pin block and a proven grip safety that must be fully depressed before the gun can be cocked and fired.

The Cyber Battlespace

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is “The Cyber Battlespace.” I selected the topic because of the recent incident with Sony’s hack and because I also said at the beginning of the year that I would write an piece on The Cloud; regrettably, that didn’t happen due to other editorial priorities So, I’ll give you a mini dose now.

Before I can talk about cyber-attacks, I need to develop The Cloud concept, just a bit, so things make better sense, and then relate that to the present cyber-attacks. What’s The Cloud and where did it come from?

The Cloud concept is a byproduct of academia; just like economic theory suggesting that service economies are better able to insulate themselves from the business cycle, when in fact empirical evidence shows they excel at producing low income jobs. However, in an academic setting, you can sit at a computer to model these concepts and it all looks good, but the one thing you must understand about academics is that none of them have ever had to sit up at night trying to figure out how to make a payroll. Clueless! So, it all sounds very impressive while sipping lattes discussing academic credentials; however, in practice, the story is much less elegant.

So, what is the cloud? If you listen to your professor discussing it, the concept assumes the role of a deity, especially if he or she has published anything on the subject. In practice, it is nothing more than an array of computational resources accessible, via the IP infrastructure, to designated and authorized users. Some of the benefits, or best said, lures, of Cloud Computing is that it eliminates duplication of resources, and is more cost effective and easier to maintain. The point here is, why does an organization need 40,000 PCs, and/or laptops, running individual copies of Microsoft Word when they can simply access that resource through the cloud. It’s clean; it’s nice and relatively simple but full of holes. However, to the hacker, or cybercriminal, MS Word is worthless; it’s the documents you create with it that are priceless because they reveal budgets, business plans, financial data, research and development, and technologies – a veritable plethora of information. Recognizing that data is the target, when you aggregate it in The Cloud you create a very valuable and attractive target; hence, criminals, rogue nations, intelligence services and militaries have the potential for enormous gains by hacking Cloud resources.

Corporations invest hundreds of millions to secure their computational resources and data; however, that investment is centered on protecting the enterprise from exposure to loss not its customers. In fact, many of these organizations benefit financially from offering transactional data collected from customers. Rest assured that protecting your personal information is not the real priority and you can see that from the hacks on Target, Home Depot, J.P. Morgan Chase, Sony Corp, and more recently Staples. How is data stored and organized in The Cloud?

Most data is organized in normalized relational data bases. I can babble on in meaningless techno jargon but a picture is worth 1000 words as they say …

Architecture

I’ll run you through a session to give you a good feel for what’s happening. I’ll start with the user represented by a happy face; however, something to note before I get started is that each of these barrels can be distributed globally. They don’t necessarily reside on the same computer, in the same building and geographic location but they are logically connected. Also note that a user can be a human or a device; for example, a POS terminal at a retail outlet (which is how Target was hacked), or a card reader at a building access point, etc.

  1. User needs access to cloud resources so he or she fires up the laptop and is challenged by access control.
  2. User enters login ID. Access control contacts password data base and if biometric access control is implemented it checks for a template.
  3. If there is a match, the user is granted access to those areas that he or she are authorized to access.
  4. However, unbeknown to our happy user, he previously visited a Website where he picked up undetected malware.
  5. Depending on the malware planted, the hacker can now capture every keystroke the person types and it could propagate itself to other users accessing Cloud resources. You now have multiple users with compromised laptops, tablets, smartphones, point of sale terminals, etc., etc.
  6. Let’s talk about the hacker’s prize, even if only one of these is hacked. Most hacks compromise a specific data table and not an entire data base; for example user I.D.s or e-mail addresses. Other types of vulnerable data include
      1. SSN, DL
      2. Name, address, and other personal data like D.O.B.
      3. account numbers
      4. password and or biometric templates

Now, imagine what can be done with biometric templates and name and addresses, or SSN and DL numbers. Making matters worse is the move to generating encryption keys from biometric data. Hack the template and you’ve broken the encryption key. So, as you can see, the value of these hacks is immense; therefore, it’s cost effective for individuals, organizations, agencies and nation states to develop the technologies to exploit these giant pools of data stored in The Cloud.

Hacks have two broad function, gaining access to data and disrupting computational resources, and I include IP infrastructure software and hardware in computational resources. We’ve seen what cyber-attacks can do in the commercial space but lets take a look at national security and what that means. Disabling space assets by either direct attack or cyber assault, disable communications networks or command and control computational resources. It is serious business and you can bet that nation states including the United States are developing cyber capabilities directed at the military and national defense fabric of other countries.

So, The Cloud is not the panacea we think it is, and less so without a serious and evolving attention to mitigating the massive risks it presents. I have to laugh because in discussing cloud security, some folks always talk about not using Cloud resources for sensitive material but let’s put that idea under the microscope for a second.

Hypothetical e-mail from a mil domain

Hi honey, I’m going to be gone for about 15 days. I don’t know where just yet but they’re looking for Spanish speaking guys so it’s probably in South America. Tell the kids, I love them and I’ll see you when I get back.

Certainly nothing sensitive in that e-mail; yet it’s full of intelligence, which when combined with other seemingly benign communiqués paints a pretty clear picture.

Just for drill, let’s take a look at the hypothetical e-mail message to see what intelligence it contains.

  • The originating e-mail address reveals the home domain, in this case mil.gov so a hacker can establish affiliation.
  • The destination e-mail address wife@gmail.com. From that we can see if the person has a Google + affiliation, so we may be able to get pictures of the recipient and immediate family members; as well as personal data. We can also check to see if there is a Facebook affiliation, and that opens up an entire can of worms.
  • We know that there is a planned deployment to a Spanish speaking region that is planned to last 15 days.
  • By looking at the date the e-mail was sent we can establish a time window.
  • We know the individual has children, which gives us an opportunity to exploit that in the event of a successful capture.
  • From the e-mail address we can identify the IP addresses involved and physical locations.

So, when Senator McCain calls hacks a new form of warfare he is spot on, and a relatively inconsequential belligerent nation can bring you to your knees, even without significant military prowess. Just imagine  prosecuting a war in an r.f. denied area? Imagine the Taliban with GPS spoofing equipment.

So, here’s what I think needs to be done.

  1. Congress needs to get to work to write legislation that explicitly requires both business and governments to secure customer and taxpayer data. If a company or agency sells consumer data they should be required to disclose it clearly and provide an opt-out.
  2. Create fiscal policy that rewards bringing technology manufacturing back in-house. This is particularly true of software development. H-1B visa policy needs to be looked at carefully. The way you deal with a shortage of technology workers is through the compensation process. Foreign students and workers are sometimes intelligence assets (possibly for both sides of the house)
  3. Rebalance the military budget to reflect the very real threats to national security in Cyber Space.

As true of all shoot-the-shits, no rules apply! So, we love to hear from you.

Have A Great Weekend Everybody!

Laser Devices Is Now Steiner eOptics

We’ve been keeping you up to date with the organizational changes at Burris Optics and Laser Devices Inc. (LDI) as they transition to the Steiner Optics family. In 2012 Laser Devices became a division of Steiner and a member of the Beretta Group international network of companies.

On January 1, 2015, Laser Devices Inc. will change its name to Steiner eOptics, and market their products under the Steiner brand. By combining LDI’s 35 years of innovative technology and products with Steiner’s almost 70 years supplying binoculars and riflescopes to military and LE customers in 80 countries, the new company is better position to address growth and evolving customer needs.

LDI’s Monterey headquarters, management, engineering, manufacturing and sales team remain the same. The new organization will leverage strong financial resources, R&D and marketing to better serve its customers.

Any questions about the rebranding should be directed to Michael Keegan, Senior Sales & Business Development Manager, at his new email address: mkeegan@steiner-eoptics.com.

A Holiday Message From Sierra Bullets

SierraBullets

As we close out 2014, it is easy to see we are in a much different place than we were 12 months ago.  The demand has slowed greatly allowing many firearms industry manufactures to finally put a dent in the huge back logs we have carried the last 2 years.  We certainly still have several bullets that are not available, but we are finally down to the 3rd tier (slower selling) bullets and keeping the top sellers on the shelf and available.
We hope to begin 2015 with the majority of our bullets back in stock and the rest coming right behind them.  We also will be introducing our new
Tipped MatchKing line to the market, which many customers have been asking us to make for many years.  We see 2015 as being closer to a “normal” year, which will allow us to get back to developing new products instead of simply making as many of the current line as we can.
The production capacity we built while demand was high will certainly help us with new product development and availability going forward.  We would like to see all customers walk into the bullet isle and see no empty spaces and see them buying the bullets they really want instead of the only box they have in your caliber.  As William Cowper so perfectly put it – “Variety is the spice of life.”  What a boring world it would be with only one bullet or caliber to choose from.
We certainly want to thank all our customers for their patience during the recent run on products.  It was just as frustrating for us to have customers wanting something we could not provide as it was for you waiting for them.  We hope this time is behind us and we can all get back to a normal supply and demand situation that keeps the shelves brimming with the bullets you all know and crave.
From our family to yours, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope this holiday season is the best one ever!

Two NYPD Officers Slain

It’s both sad and troubling having to digest that two NYPD officers were mercilessly slain today while doing nothing more than sitting in a patrol car. To say that I’m bothered by that is an understatement, but even more troubling is the lack of support Mayor Bill de Blasio has shown for his own police force. I hate to think his lack of support for his officers was a catalyst for this tragic event.

More worrisome is that the stage has been set for exposure to other police departments across the country, requiring the need to guard against copycat activity. However, in addition to the usual Holiday Season uptick, they are going to have to lookout for themselves, and that is regrettable.

I’d like to think that the senseless murder of these officers was merely the work of a genetic defect that ended up taking his own life, but it certainly seems plausible that the recent protests and Mayor’s position may have ignited the fuse.

I want to encourage all of my readers to reach out to the NYPD Commissioner’s Office to extend condolences and offer whatever financial assistance you see as appropriate to the families of the fallen officers, it’s the very least we can do. And while you’re at it, do something nice for a cop throughout this Christmas week. It doesn’t take a heck of a lot to make them feel appreciated and part of the communities they work in.

Nuclear Protection Security Forces Issued The M150 ACOG

813A1JMLKYL._SL1500_

The TA31RCO-M150CP is presently in use by the U.S. Army and SOF units. The optic provides 4x magnification designed specifically for the 14.5 inch M4 carbine. It incorporates a dual illumination system using a combination of fiber optics and self-luminous tritium. This allows the aiming point to always be illuminated without the use of batteries. The tritium illuminates the aiming point in total darkness, and the fiber optic self-adjusts reticle brightness during daylight according to ambient light conditions. This allows the operator to keep both eyes open while engaging targets and maintaining maximum situational awareness.

The reticle pattern allows quick target acquisition at close combat ranges with enhanced target identification and hit probability out to 800 meters utilizing the Bullet Drop Compensator. No tools are needed for windage and elevation adjustments because the TA31RCO features external adjusters, making it waterproof up to 11m without the caps.

When the Air Force transitioned from the M16 to the M4, airmen and other security personnel were limited to the M68 red dot optic, which offered no magnification. The need for magnified optics was communicated to the Air Force Global Strike Command Force Improvement Program  and the M150 was selected to fill that gap. Airmen tasked with providing security at the nation’s nuclear stockpiles will be issued the new optic. The move is expected to improve security as well as force moral.

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper Official Trailer

In typical Eastwood manner, American Sniper successfully captures the essence of both the man and the job. This is a drama / action film about Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. After returning home, he dedicated his time to his family and to helping returning veterans diagnosed with PTSD. He died tragically, on 2 Feb 2013, at the Rough Creek Ranch-Lodge-Resort shooting range in Erath County, Texas; shot by 25-year-old fellow veteran Eddie Ray Routh a U.S. Marine suffering from PTSD.

This is will be a must see for me, and I hope it’s also on your list.

Beretta Announces Its Entry For The U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System The Beretta M9A3

M9A3-b

The M9 has been in service with the U.S. Armed Forces for 30 years. Beretta has delivered 600,000 M9s to the DoD; with a contract in place to deliver an additional 100,000 pistols.

To meet the Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) solicitation requirements, Beretta has designed a much improved handgun dubbed the M9A3.

The M9A3 features a thin grip with a removable modular wrap-around grip, MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail, removable front and rear tritium sights, extended and threaded barrel for suppressor use, 17-round sand resistant magazine, and numerous improved small components to increase durability and ergonomics, all in an earth tone finish.

Concurrent with its announcement, Beretta has indicated plans to make the M9A3 available to law enforcement and commercial markets. The target date for availability in those markets is sometime in Q2-2015. So, you’ll want to be looking out for that event.

We’ll certainly bring you more on the M9A3, but it looks like a winner. The inclusion of the threaded and extended barrel, along with the accessory rail and modular grip addresses the overwhelming majority of the U.S. Army’s needs; leaving caliber options to be decided at a later date.
