This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic consists of a quick tutorial on DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System). Why should you care?
Simple, it’s capable of 1 to 2 centimeter accuracy. DGPS is currently being used by surveyors and its is being broadly implemented by federal and local agencies. It has tremendous potential, so it’s important you understand it exists and what it can do for you. DGPS is a technology that should be made available to all users, and it wouldn’t hurt to chat with your local or federal elected officials to make it broadly available for commercial use. At least broach the subject with them.
DGPS uses the civil satellite constellation NOT the military system so there are no issues there. The system requires a base station with a GPS receiver that can interface to an r.f transmitter operating in the mid-frequency (MF) range, which is in the 300Khz range and a handheld or vehicle mounted GPS receiver with a built in receiver that can receive in the 300 Khz range.
Here’s how it all works.
GPS positioning requires that the GPS receiver see a minimum of 4 satellites. The receiver then calculates the signals time differences and from that determines your position and elevation. In DGPS, the precise location of the base or reference receiver is already know. Knowing its precise location (usually surveyed), the base or reference receiver calculates what the signal time differences should be. It then compares the calculated time differences with the actual time differences for all the satellites it sees and arrives at a numerical value, or difference, referred to as the error or correction.
The base or reference station then formats a message, which includes the error or correction values for all of the satellites in its sky. That message is transmitted as part of a beacon signal in the 300Khz range.
The roving GPS receiver then receives the reference station’s transmission, and from that transmission it extracts all of the corrections, or error values, for the satellites in its horizon. The GPS receiver then applies those corrections in its own calculation to determine position and elevation. Then end result is an extremely precise position.
The effective range of the systems is up to 200 kilometers depending on terrain. That means that any handheld or vehicle mounted GPS receiver, compatible with DGPS, can achieve extreme accuracy using the civil satellite constellation.
Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) announced at this year’s LAAD, in Rio, eLog. Succinctly, eLog is a weapon integrated IT management tool to identify weapon failures, establish preventative maintenance schedules, inventory control and physical tracking. IWI’s eLog goes beyond basic armorer needs delivering a comprehensive digitized solution for small arms inventories.
eLog consists of three subsystems: a weapon-embedded sensor module that records each time a round is fired; ruggedized handheld terminal readers that interact with the sensor modules and collects sensor stored data; and a PC-based armorer management application and database to processes data collected from the individual weapon. The software processes this data to produce a detailed view of each weapon’s status and performance.
eLog’s software then processes collected data to generate preventative maintenance reports; identify components that need to be replaced based on round counts, inventory control and other administrative support.
The 50,000 foot view of eLog is a structured small arms management system focused on proactive maintenance to avoid weapon failures.
Nampa, Idaho (April 2015) – Adaptive Tactical, LLC, introduce its NON-LITE designed to mimic the weight, balance and profile of a standard gun-mounted flashlight’’; allowing the operator to focus on intense training without risking damage to his or her actual flashlight.

For our readers who live to jump out of perfectly good aircraft, you’ll be happy to know that SOF parachutists now have a Free Fall Advanced Ram-Air Parachute System, RA-1, which is built for static line or free fall operations. The U.S. Army’s 3rd SFG will be the first group to field the new canopy.
In addition to being configurable for static or free fall, the RA-1 increases the load capacity to 450 lbs. with an operational envelope of 3,500 MSL to 25,000 MSL.
The RA-1 has been undergoing rigorous testing since 2013 at Fort Bragg, N.C., and will replace the aging MC-4 parachute for all services. Testing of the RA-1 was supported by 30 static line qualified paratroopers from C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment at Joint Base-Lewis-McChord, Wash., and 50 military free fall paratroopers from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th Special Forces Command groups. Airborne and Special Operations Test Directorate, or ABNSOTD, testers conducted the operational test to validate the system’s effectiveness, suitability and safety, said the projects test plan analyst R. Manke.
“The RA-1 is an individual Soldier’s parachute system consisting of a main parachute, reserve parachute, harness and container,” Manke explained. “It is designed to allow insertion by both Military Free Fall and Double Bag Static Line techniques depending on mission deployment requirements.
“The system also allows for an increase in the jumper’s rigged weight of up to four hundred and fifty pounds,” he continued. “Additionally, the system is designed to deliver jumpers safely from aircraft flying at elevations from thirty-five hundred feet above ground level to twenty-five thousand feet mean sea level with an objective to go to thirty-five thousand [mean sea level] after follow-on testing.”
There’s not a lot of detail available on the POF-USA PSG9 other than its form factor, which POF describes as smaller than an MP5. We’ll be keeping our ear to the ground on this one. In the meantime check their video out.

On the low setting, it provides 85 lumens, 1,000 candela, a beam distance of 63 meters and a 12-hour runtime. The strobe runs for 1.5 continuous hours.
The ProTac HL USB uses a C4® LED that is impervious to shock. It runs on an included Streamlight lithium ion rechargeable battery pack; it also functions with a commercially available 18650 rechargeable lithium ion battery, or two CR123A lithium cell batteries. The ProTac HL USB also features an innovative adaptable battery compartment design that eliminates battery rattle. An optional USB/AC wall adapter is available.
The light is fabricated from 6000 series machined aircraft aluminum with an anodized finish, and includes a convenient multi-function, push-button, tactical tail switch. This tail switch provides easy, one-handed operation of the light’s momentary, variable intensity, or strobe modes. The light’s Micro USB charge port is protected by a sliding water-resistant cover.
The ProTac HL USB measures 6.50 inches in length and weighs 7.2 ounces. It features an anti-roll face cap, and a removable pocket clip for attachment to a vest, belt, or pocket. The light also has an IPX4 rated design for water-resistant operation and is impact-resistance tested to one meter. This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is geared towards the tactical precision rifle folks in cyberspace. These are the folks that are called upon to take the shot but could really careless about producing ragged holes on the job.
So, here’s our question/challenge. Do you really need a ballistic calculator?
With the increased use of smart devices in the field, it seems like every one on the planet is coming up with ballistic apps. More recently, Peak Studios has introduced Ballistic for the iPhone. Android devices also have a plethora of apps to choose from. All of which are great, with varying degrees of sophistication, but they all suffer from a common problem, which is fitting them into real world scenarios. Ballistic calculators are wonderful when you are shooting at steel or paper out to extended ranges but they fall short in application because targets under“work” conditions have a nasty habit of not presenting themselves as frequently or predictably as you’d like. So here’s what I would like to suggest.

Why did I leave wind out as one of the more important variables?
All precision shooters know that wind is a consideration in deriving an accurate firing solution; yet, it remains the most illusive parameter to master. Shooters will use vegetation, mirage, smoke stacks, flags or just about anything that provides a clue as to its strength and direction. All well and good but the problem is much more involved and taking a reading from a wind meter at the shooter’s position does not get you there.
The effect of wind is a continuum lasting from the time the bullet exits the muzzle to the point of impact. For example, shooting across a saddle you may read a 9 o’clock, 7 mph wind at the shooter’s position, but as the bullet travels, the dip may have a 3 o’clcok 20 mph wind and still a different direction and value on the opposite peak. Urban areas are notorious for multiple wind vectors. The wind problem becomes even less manageable as range to the target increases so wind calls are almost always wrong.
DARPA and the U.S. Army has invested millions in developing a fire control system for snipers that detects all of the wind vectors along the bullet’s flight path in addition to the normal external ballistic parameters. Refer to “One Shot XG” where the objective is that illusive one-shot one-kill. You may also want to read on DARPA’s EXACTO project that attempts to develop a guided projectile and system to increase sniper standoff and effectiveness.
Reading wind, or the better expression estimating wind, is time consuming, laborious and almost always wrong so your best approach is to check the trace and correct fire on that basis. The most effective strategy is to close range as much as operational constraints allow.

We’ve had a pretty busy Spring this year with a number of events that will generate articles throughout the summer months. We are also working on some edged weapon reviews from a number of manufacturers, and if you like the Japanese influence of John Williams you’ll want to tune in for that review.
We also want to reintroduce bore sights to our readers as they are particularly valuable in these times when availability of ammunition fluctuates widely and its cost risen dramatically. In discussing bore sights, one gets a sense that the general shooting public considers them a waste of time and money; it’s unfortunate, unfounded and influenced by operator issues and product selection. There are excellent bore sighting tools on the market and we will introduce you to just one. They aren’t inexpensive but they have a very short payback in reduced ammunition costs and platform independence. We’ll have that article up in May.

I wrestled with my decision to choose this topic as our shoot-the-shit, for this Friday, principally because of the suffering the Scott family is going through. I can’t begin to imagine loosing a sibling under these circumstances considering it could have all been avoided. I guess shit happens. However, the reason I chose to go forward is because I’m sick and tired of the news media rendering verdicts and trying people before investigations are complete.
So, here is our question. Did Officer Slager screw up big time or did he murder Mr. Scott?
Here are the facts as best as we know them.
At no time prior to the tragic shooting does Office Slager search Mr. Scott. In fact, the video evidence released shows that Officer Slager does not have the opportunity to search Mr. Scott. In fact, Mr. Scott was not searched until after he was shot. So, Officer Slager is confronted with a fleeing suspect that could be armed. Had Officer Slager given chase with his weapon holstered, or at a low ready, he could have exposed himself to potentially being shot by a fleeing suspect who had not been searched earlier to assess whether he was armed, or not.
Even with video, these scenarios are never black and white they almost always are varying shades of grey. So my message to the media is; allow for the investigation to proceed before you stoke the flames. The Scott family deserves it as does Office Slager.
In our view, Officer Slager had the means to mitigate his own exposure but wrongfully chose to fire on Mr. Scott. Is Officer Slager a murderer or did he really fuck up! Let’s us know what you think, and if you’re a person of faith say a prayer for the Scott Family who sit at home grieving over the tragic loss of a son and brother.

HK will debut its latest addition to the P30 line, the P30SK Subcompact, at the NRA Annual Meeting (Booth 2041) this coming weekend in Nashville, TN.
The new P30SK is one of the smallest HK handguns made and is ideally suited as a concealed carry pistol. With an overall length of less than six-and-a-half inches, the P30SK is small enough for discreet, everyday carry but still packs a substantial 11 rounds of full power 9 mm cartridges in an easy to shoot, ergonomic design. Other trigger modes include conventional double action/single action (DA/SA) with a serrated decocking lever located on the rear of the frame. The DA/SA mode is available with and without dual ambidextrous manual safeties located on the left and right side of the frame. Other ambidextrous controls include dual slide and magazine release levers.
Like all P30 pistols, the P30SK features an automatic hammer safety and firing pin safety. An abbreviated Picatinny rail molded into the front of the frame enables weapon lights, laser aimers, or other accessories to be easily mounted.
All P30SK models have been extensively tested during a three-year development process. Despite their small size, P30SK subcompacts have excellent weight and balance making them naturally pointable, easy to control, and accurate to shoot.

I was introduced to the Grey Ghost Precision “Specter Series” of firearms in Autumn of 2014 during a training evolution with an SOT-A. That element was deploying to conduct combat operations OCONUS; members of the team were using a GGP prototype rifle; my initial impressions of the weapon were extremely positive. GGP later attended and supported the Green Beret Pro-Am on Veteran’s Day, where I became acquainted with their staff and was able to shoot the production versions of the gun. Based on that experience I purchased one of the first 5.56mm Specter Lights “off the line.” Since that time I have become increasingly impressed with the weapon, enough so that I offered this review to them. GGP did not ask for the review and offered neither remuneration or trade. This is the first rifle I have reviewed—the weapon has certainly earned it.
The Specter Rifle feels exactly how a real rifle should feel—that is the best way to describe it. This is the closest I’ve seen to a SCAR in an AR platform. The weapon is weighty but not heavy and well balanced, with even weight distribution from the muzzle to butt. When firing, the recoil impulse is high, causing a perceived reduction in recoil shock to the shooter; this allows faster recovery time and quicker follow on shot placement with minimal muzzle rise.
The rifle is solidly built and, short of a left side ejection port, has all the amenities that belong on any ambidextrous rifle. The ambi bolt release is a welcome addition, allowing for more ergonomic magazine changes and letting the shooter watch what is going on downrange instead of looking at the other side of the rifle. It also allows the shooter to maintain a better high ready position and reduces the amount of movement with the non-firing hand. In the high ready position, a simple glance at the round entering the chamber when the bolt is released will tell the shooter exactly what condition the rifle is in. This ambi charging handle is solid, beefy and works great. Its design allows for faster immediate action correcting any malfunctions just as easily with either hand.
A Keymod free float hand guard comes standard; this will allow the addition of reduced weight, lower profile accessories as they become available, which will in turn reduce the overall weight of the rifle. More real estate and better ergonomics mean better shot groups and longer engagements from the standing position.
Most rifle manufacturers skip aftermarket muzzle brakes due to additional cost, but the Specter comes with a Gem-Tech brake already installed. Many shooters already have Gem-Tech cans in their arsenal, which makes this an even better value for some and if you were on the fence about buying a can for your rifle, now you will have one less excuse. With the Gemtech brake installed, there is a noticeable decrease in flash compared to other brakes, especially during our low light shooting and night time training courses.
Even better (and more significantly), I experienced a slight reduction in recoil and no increase in noise. Combining the Gem-Tech brake with the geometry of the rifle makes for fast, and I mean very fast, reduction in follow though time and putting the next shot on target.
I found the trigger geometry to be outstanding. The straight line with a slight curve at the bottom makes for better trigger manipulation and the additional room in the trigger guard allows a shooter to place his trigger finger in a lower position on the trigger itself. This allows for a better mechanical advantage on the trigger and gives a perceived lighter trigger pull. The reduced weight of the pull, combined with the geometry of the trigger itself, provides a very accurate manipulation of the trigger.
My experience has proven that most battle rifles have more perceived pull than the GGP Specter Light. The trigger pull scale I used easily validated that. I measured the pull at 4.8 pounds, which is excellent consistency for a mass produced rifle and is a ready example of GGP’s high production standards. The crispness of the break in the trigger is superb, with reduced pre travel and minimal over travel, with a solid and defining reset. You definitely know when the trigger is reset and ready to fire again.
The ambi safety is rigid but not hard to manipulate, so there is no mistake when it locks into position. You will know that it is on safe or ready to fire. This is topped off with a Magpul grip that gives a more neutral grip angle than a standard AR grip, which makes it easier to reach and engage the safety, a definite advantage for the shooter with smaller hands. I am normally not a fan of Magpul products, but the grip set-up on this rifle made it a better value for more shooters by reducing the sweep of the grip to allow for this extra reach capability.
The tolerances between the billet cut upper and lower receivers are second to none. The upper receiver has m-4 feed ramps cut for reliable feeding and chambering every time. Though it is no longer or wider than any other MilSpec mag well, the Specter’s mag well is built beefier than those on a typical lower receiver. The edges also feature a slight bevel, making for faster magazine insertions. The fit of a magazine into the mag well is secure and feels good in the rifle. Balance of a firearm is important for everything from shooting long distance from a standing position, moving in and around cover, or just carrying when out on a mission. With a billet cut lower, the weight distribution of this rifle gives it the ideal balance for all of these. The buffer tube and spring assembly are held in securely, and there is a noticeable absence of the typical grinding sounds from the buffer tube when firing. A Magpul stock finishes out the lower receiver as an integral part of the overall balance of the rifle.
The only parts I felt the need to add for my own edification were the Armaspec Tactical Combat Button and the Troy industries Bolt Release. I have been using these parts for as long as they have been out on other rifles so it only felt natural to include them on this one.
I admit I hate to clean rifles but the black nitride coating makes the chore of cleaning easy and requires just a wipe down with a cloth. I use very little oil in this rifle and I have put around 16,000 rounds through this rifle in the past 3-4 months using it as a rental for our gun club and as an SOF skills weapon for training my students. I am happy to say that I have had no malfunctions that were not caused by my own intentional abuse. I fired 12000 rounds before even the first cleaning and then let the carbon, dirt and oil build up till it fails. All it took was a wipe down and the GGP Specter was back up and running like it was new. The bolt is nitride coated as well, which makes for very tight tolerances with parts like the cam pin and the cotter pin. I believe the tighter a bolt carrier and bolt are, the longer you will have tighter shot groups. There is a point when a bolt wears that you will also notice the shot groups beginning to relax a bit as well.
The direct impingement system is flawless. I fired over 3000 rounds in the first month of using rifle number 00013, with no cleaning, and zero malfunctions. No double feeds, no failures to lock on an empty magazine, nothing. With cheaper Wolf ammo, I experienced a few light strikes, but with good ammo, this rifle shoots great. With match grade ammo, the Specter Light holds a sub minute group at 100 yards. I am confident that this is easily a 650 yard gun.
I am a shooter and instructor, not a gunsmith by any means. The amount of work my gunsmith has to perform on the typical AR platform is almost shameful due to malfunctions and gas system problems. I have many ARs come through my pro shop in the $1900 to $3500 range, straight from the gun show or other gun shops, and seen them fail on the first round. I am talking high end, high priced rifles. Names will be withheld to protect the innocent, but I would put the GGP Spector Light up against any of these rifles any day. In a shooting endurance test, I would bet on the GGP rifle to be in the top 3 every time. For the money, this is by far the best AR platform in 5.56 that I have had the pleasure of owning. Out of all the rifles I have in the same class, I grab my GGP Specter when I want the gun to work and shoot true.

It’s impossible not to sit and wonder what makes an individual summarily kill 149 completely innocent people. In our view, Andreas Lubitz has not only betrayed the solemn responsibility a pilot has for his passengers but in the process set a new standard for the meaning of genetic defect. Investigators still pouring over the co-pilot’s personal records know that he was seen by at least 6 psychologists and psychiatrists but remain clueless as to his motive. We’ve developed our own theory based on a recent e-mail advertisements.
We believe that upon discovering the availability of online psychology programs, he reached the conclusion that he was hoodwinked, and that he did not need six people to accomplish what he could have done for himself. Feeling cheated, he slipped into a deep depression and fueled with anger decides to end his life. And, since misery loves company he felt justified in taking 149 souls with him. Cockpit voice recordings captured Lubitz’s breathing, which we believe suggest that he was fondling himself all the way to the end. This, we surmise, is the reason for the 8 minute descent.

I’m a confirmed early adopter. All my life, I’ve embraced technology and used it extensively as an enabler. I seek knowledge of it, ways to apply it and master it. Others express noticeable timidity, suspicion, and in extreme cases irrational fears of it. So, when people discuss drones, unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs, I don’t see the technology as an infringement on privacy, civil liberties or sinister attempts to control the people by governments. Certainly that potential is there, but that’s not my focus or thought process.
Commercial aviation is a good example. Commercial airliners are highly automated; not simply flying to its destination but landing using an ILS system under computer control. Recent air disasters like Germanwings and MH370 will serve to accelerate increasing restraints on pilot discretion replacing it with stricter computer controls to the degree were someone could take control of the aircraft from the ground. UPS, FedEx and USPS will use UAVs to move cargo and yes, police and government agencies will expand their use.
This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is less frivolous than previous choices. I’d like to open the topic up to our readers to hear some of your thoughts. Let’s us know where you stand on the proliferation of UAVs. To seed the discussion, I found a video published by Infowras.com.
