U.S. Army Links Family of Weapon Sights-Individual To The Enhanced Night Vision Goggle Wirelessly.

FWS-I-and-ENVG-III-prototype

Military.com ran an interesting story on the Army’s efforts to integrate its Family of Weapon Sights-Individual (FWS-I) with the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle (ENVG). In this system, the operator is able to transmit his thermal weapon sight’s image, with a push of a button, wirelessly to his ENVG; allowing the operator to quickly engage a target. This is some great news as it equips our operators with much needed technology shortening the kill chain.

Although were are enthused by the development, WiFi connections can be easily disrupted by jamming techniques falling under the spread spectrum jamming concept. These jamming techniques are even effective against frequency hoping communications systems. I fear that much of our system development is driven by experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan ignoring the potential for conflicts with developed militaries.

Maybe fiber optic connectivity would mitigate that risk and still limit weapon to operator wiring at a minimum. Something to think about.

Density Altitude Discussed

One of the more interesting questions we get around here is about density altitude as it pertains to external ballistics. So, we thought it would make a good shoot-the-shit topic for this Friday. In this post we want to shed some light on the concept of density altitude as it pertains to external ballistic performance.

External environmental parameters influence the efficiency of a projectile moving through the air for a given ballistic coefficient and projectile geometry. Different bullet designs perform differently under similar conditions and all bullet designs exhibit flight paths influenced by environmental conditions.  The impact of that influence increases with range to the target. For example, police snipers  don’t usually concern themselves with environmental conditions when they operate within their usual engagement range of 53 yards; however, they all understand environmental parameters and will employ them as range to the target increases. A one inch error at 100 yards translates to a three inch error at 300 yards and six inches at 600 yards.

OAvlhMxvSDmSxw5R7eb9_K4500ABODIn determining a firing solution, precision shooters must take temperature, station pressure, humidity and altimeter into consideration. Prior to the integration of ballistics software with weather meters, like the Kestrel NV4500 family, ballistic calculations involved manual entry of environmental data into a separate device like a PDA or smart device to arrive at a firing solution. This procedure is both tedious, time consuming and what happens when your ballistic calculators gets run over by a Humvee  – enter density altitude.

Density altitude is an aerodynamic concept used extensively in aviation. For example, on a hot and humid day, I know that I’m going to have a longer run down the runway before rotating. You may have heard the term “flying by the numbers,” here’s what that means. It means that you adjust aircraft attitude and indicated airspeed for specific values under specific conditions. For example, rotation air speed will vary with fuel and weight. The best rate of climb speed is that airspeed that results in the best vertical gain for horizontal travel. This value varies under different conditions. Yet another performance factor is fuel consumption, it too will vary with density altitude. So, it follows that a projectiles performance will vary with density altitude.

Pencil and paper computation of density altitude is not trivial needing a  couple of conversions and requires that you have the following data: temperature, station pressure and dew point. All commercially available weather meters capture that data and automatically calculates density altitude. Once you have your density altitude value from your weather meter,  you’re ready to get your firing solution from commercially available cards.

Density altitude cards, also called estimators are available in sets grouped by ammunition type, meters or yards, MRAD or MOA. Using these tools is easy and eliminate the need for a separate ballistic calculator.

I use cards as a backup against device failures due to battery exhaustion or device damage. They work great and the firing solutions are accurate. If you are a precision rifle shooter having a set of ballistic cards is strongly recommended and highly desirable.

As always we look forward to hearing from you, or if you want to change the subject all together, well that’s cool also– it’s a shoot-the-shit.

Have a great weekend everybody, be safe and have some fun with your buds or family!

Steyr SSG Carbon Is Now Shipping

(July 21, 2015) — Steyr Arms has announced that its newest SSG rifle—wearing an advanced carbon-fiber stock—has landed in America. Initially introduced at the 2014 SHOT Show, the exceptionally accurate, innovative and moderately-priced SSG Carbon rifle was met with an unprecedented number of orders from the law enforcement community that took the last 16 months to fill, but the latest shipment of rifles now makes the SSG Carbon available throughout the U.S.

Unlike conventional carbon-fiber stocks made from woven carbon fabric that often suffer from side-strike structural failures, the SSG Carbon’s stock is made using the same “chipped-carbon” Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) construction used to create load-bearing structures in Formula 1 racecars and high-performance aircraft. The SSG Carbon’s chipped-carbon flakes combine thermally with the binding agent to form the SMC for a distinctive appearance to the stock, but like the spirals on the rifle’s cold-hammer-forged barrel, they aren’t just there for looks. The carbon chips interlock with each other to create an unparalleled tension net that is superior to steel in every direction, yet weighing a fraction of steel and aluminum.

Due to the unique recoil absorption properties of its SMC technology, the SSG Carbon is surprisingly lightweight, and its recoil absorption is unmatched. Utilizing the same barreled action and muzzle brake as the famed SSG 08, the SSG Carbon is based on Steyr’s Safe Bolt System (SBS) action, and it utilizes its direct trigger, legendary for its crisp, clean and repeatable break. A detachable box magazine functions either as a constant-feed magazine or it can be placed in a second position that acts as a magazine cutoff to single-feed the rifle over the top of a loaded magazine.

The stock of the SSG Carbon has multiple mounting points for sling attachments. It also features an adjustable cheek piece, an adjustable butt plate, rubber-wrapped pistol grip, a heavy bipod and an integrated finely adjustable rear-elevation pod. The cold-hammer-forged barrel measures 20 inches and features a twist rate of 1:10.

The suggested retail price is $3,695. To find a dealer near you, visit the Steyr website at www.steyrarms.com.

Read The Iran Nuclear Deal Here!

(This article was published on Thursday 16 Jul 2015 to accommodate other editorial priorities)

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit will be the recent Iran Nuclear Deal formally titled “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” or JCPOA.

A lot has been said about this deal, but whatever side of the equation you are on, it represents the first and only good faith attempt at a diplomatic solution. Having said that, this deal rewards Iran handsomely for compliance. I found the timelines of 10 and 24 years somewhat curious and suggestive that western negotiators were trying to leverage generational change. So the bottom line is this…

If Iran abandons its nuclear weapon ambitions, permanently, the country will see an economic overhaul of biblical proportions. EU and EU+3 negotiators held out the carrot so is Iran willing to abandon a national ambition for a nuclear weapon and benefit from an outpour of assistance? That remains the question. If you’ve formed your answer based on past performance, you’ll conclude that Iran will cheat before it even has a chance to implement. If you’re an optimist you’ll assume that Iran prefers to have a vibrant economy over a nuclear arsenal. I think Iran will assume that it can have both. Some of the deal points follow.

The deal, leaves a commercial nuclear program intact, and supports it, in fact, with accessibility to EU, EU+3 and US research and technical assistance. The deal limits uranium enrichment to 3.67% , it allows Iran to produce its own nuclear fuel, continue nuclear research, produce isotopes for medical and research purposes, limits the types and number of centrifuges and prevents Iran from stockpiling nuclear material. The terms also require Iran to completely abandon all ambitions to develop nuclear weapons, but aside from reimposition of sanctions has no explicit teeth for failure to comply. Other than abandonment of nuclear weapon ambitions, the deal places no other burdens, such cessation of regional ambitions and support of terrorist groups.

Had Secretary Kerry asked me for input, I would have included restrictions on developing a nuclear powered surface and submarine navy. The only difference between a commercial reactor and one found on a ship or submarine is size. By allowing commercial development of nuclear power, deal makers have accelerated Iran’s development and deployment of a nuclear fleet. Said fleet could operate farther and for extended periods globally, which mitigates some of the requirements for land based intercontinental ballistic capability. With a nuclear navy, Iran can use smaller devices; for example, something like the old U.S. UUM-44 SUBROC, which can be fired from a torpedo tube has a range of 34 miles and has a sufficiently  large payload (5 kiloton) to take out a harbor or naval flotilla.

An Iranian nuclear Navy operating in the Mediterranean could pose a very serious problem for Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia and others.

The incentives for Iran to abandon its nuclear weapon ambitions, under this deal, are there in a very big way; however, are they enough to influence a government who views a nuclear arsenal as a sovereign right and a symbol of national prestige? That folks is the $65 million dollar question and it’s a huge crap shoot given Iran’s current regime.

As with all shoot-the-shit topics, you’re invited to make any unsupported comment, insult any one you wish, use any form of profanity and it’s all free of charge.

Have a great weekend be safe, get out and do something with your buds and family!

Australia Moves Forward With The EF88 Assault Rifle

EF88Australia’s LAND 125 Phase 3C project is valued at approximately $467m. The enhanced F88 (EF88) rifle contract accounts for approximately $100m or 21.4% of the total project valuation.

First on the EF88 rollout list is 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) as a precursor to its rollout to the Australian Army. The EF88 issued to 1 RAR will be equipped with an enhanced day sight, foregrip and, for grenadiers, a grenade launcher attachment. The EF88 greatly improves mounting options for optics, laser aiming devices as well as support for grenade launcher attachment. The enhancements overcomes all of the limitations plaguing the initial F88 originally placed in service in 1988. The EF88, also known as the F90, retains all of the benefits of the Steyr bullpup design, including its interchangeable barrel, but raises the weapon’s performance and capabilities to meet present day battle requirements. Thales Australia began initial production in 2014

POF USA INTRODUCES THE DICTATOR GAS BLOCK

POF-USA has introduced a new adjustable gas block that it sells as the Dictator Gas Block. Then new gas block is a 9 position adjustable DI (direct impingement) gas block that provides the ultimate range of adjustability and versatility. The addition of a suppressor typically increases the level of back pressure within the rifle system. This increase will prematurely wear parts and increase the amount of gas/carbon introduced into the chamber. With the Dictator, you can now control that rate of fire, gas flow and ultimately the reliability of your system.
The Dictator is a low profile gas block, fitting under rail systems with a picatinny rail channel of ½” or greater. Adjusting the gas system is easy, the front of the gas block has a dial that accepts a flat screwdriver, 3/32” hex wrench and dictation tool included with the Dictator gas block kit.
Each Dictator gas block kit comes complete with the applicable length gas tube. The 2 lengths currently available are carbine and mid-length. This gas block is setup for barrels manufactured for a .750 gas block. MSRP $179.99

Morphix Technologies® Instructional Video on How-to-Use the TraceX® Explosives Detection Training Kit

The TraceX explosives detection kit is designed to help identify bombers, bomb-makers and their bomb-making facilities. It detects the most common explosive materials and their precursors at trace levels in a single test

Morphix Technologies® is a privately-owned Virginia Beach based business that develops, manufactures and sells easy to use, lightweight and inexpensive. colorimetric chemical detection products. The company developed SafeAir® and ChromAir® badges to monitor exposure to toxic gasses for industrial workers.

In 2005, the company launched the Chameleon® product line, which provides rugged, easy-to-use chemical detection for military and first response personnel. The Chameleon could not have come at a more important time, as terrorism, meth labs and even chemical suicides have become serious concerns for warfighters and first responders.

In 2013, Morphix launched TraceX®.  The TraceX Explosives kit detects trace levels of explosive materials and their precursors on surfaces.  With a single swab, the TraceX Explosives kit allows military and law enforcement personnel to quickly and easily identify the most common Home Made Explosives (HME) materials used to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

This is some great technology for forward deployed personnel and others needing to screen individuals, quarters or  other facilities.

What The Hell Is A Sanctuary City?

0707_san-francisco

Congratulations, you’ve made it through another week and that entitles you to engage in a good shoot-the-shit. This week’s topic is “Sanctuary” cities. What the hell is a Sanctuary City?

Sanctuary is defined as a place of refuge or safety; so I ask you, what refuge or safety was afforded to Kate Steinle? Her life was snuffed out by some genetic defect, a convicted felon, who repeatedly entered the country illegally! It was a sanctuary for Francisco Sanchez, Kate’s killer, but Kate Steinle’s grave. She died in her father’s arms asking for his help, and I’m pissed. So, how the heck does a city, unilaterally, decide not to enforce federal law?

Regardless of where you stand on the immigration issue, here are some irrefutable facts.

Every organism on the face of the planet has a means by which it accepts what is beneficial and rejects what is harmful. At the cellular level that function is performed by the cell wall or cell membrane, and at the life form level it’s a function relegated to the immune system. All living organisms employ this mechanism. Countries, write and employ immigration laws that are designed to serve this purpose but when national immigration laws are short circuited or blatantly ignored you end up with disaster. Immigration is not a divine right. It happens at the generosity and pleasure of the host nation and conducted within prescribed laws. The objective is to welcome what is good and reject what is bad. So I ask again, how does a city unilaterally circumvent the process? I honestly can not comprehend the mentality that does that.

The United States of America has a lawful immigration and  guest worker process, and it’s very clear that those here illegally, and the opportunists who live extremely well on the backs of those seeking an opportunity, are  the ones claiming that our immigration system is broken. Our immigration process is not broken it simply needs to be followed and enforced where applicable and no municipality should be allowed to circumvent our laws. So, feel free to chime in and tell us what you think.

Have a great weekend readers, be safe,  get out and do something with your family or buds!

MOHOC Inc. MOHOC Elite Ops Camera

DSC_3085

MOHOC Inc., (formerly Rapid Industries) is differentiating itself by producing an action camera that’s optimized for military application. There is no shortage of excellent action cameras from GOPRO, Contour, Sony and Richo; however, they all suffer from a common malady, they fail to integrate with the soldier system architecture. GOPRO, for example, builds an exceptional camera but its boxy form factor limits weapon mounting or requires NVG mounts for helmet attachment and harnesses for body mounts. Of the cameras I’ve listed, Contour remains the best and most compact arrangement for weapon mounting and helmet rail mounts.  MOHOC Inc. was paying attention and are in the final stages of releasing an action camera specifically designed to interface with the operator.

The MOHOC EOC (Elite Ops Camera) borrows from many of its competitors but is packaged to seamlessly integrate with the operator by eliminating the need to use harnesses and NVG mounts; features include:

  1. Full HD video 1080p @ 60 fps.
  2. Dual capture – simultaneously captures still images while recording video.
  3. Still imaging supports manual, photo burst and time lapse capture.
  4. The camera housing is snag free, drop resistant from a height of 2 meters and waterproof to 10 meters.
  5. The MOHOC camera housing features a mounting design designated as the Curvelock system. Simply stated, the housing is designed with a curved base that follows the helmets profile and attaches to the helmet’s Velcro field. The entire arrangement is secure, snag free and low profile. MOHOC Inc. feels the arrangement is jumpable, which seems reasonable based on how securely the camera sits on the helmet.
  6. Optically the MOHOC features a fairly fast F2.8 lens with a 140 degree f.o.v.
  7. Other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, 1 touch operation, low light and IR support and 128GB Micro SD support.
  8. MOHOC Inc. includes dual power support (2) CR123 or rechargeable Li-ion.

MOHOC looks to be a comprehensive clean package with broad application across military and LE tactical units. Availability is looking like late 2015 and at this time there’s no official M.S.R.P., but I suspect you’ll see it come in at the $800 price point.

DARPA Invests In Sensorized Prosthetics

Years of returning war wounded Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans have focused the medical industry on developing prosthetic technology that more closely resembles a real limb or extremity. For example, researchers at the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University have developed a new kind of interface that can convey a sense of touch from 20 spots on a prosthetic hand. It does this by directly stimulating nerve bundles—known as peripheral nerves in the arms of patients. Two people have so far been fitted with the interface. What’s more, the implants continue to work after 18 months, a noteworthy milestone given that electrical interfaces to nerve tissue can gradually degrade in performance. This is all great news for disabled veterans and disabled patients as a whole.

In the video below, we see the sensory feedback supplied from the prosthetic hand that results in the patient not crushing the cherry as he removes the stem.

DARPA is also actively participating in improving prosthetic technology. The research organization has awarded a contract to a New Hampshire-based corporation, DEKA Innovative Solutions Corp., on Thursday for sensorized prosthetic limbs, as part of the Hand Proprioception & Touch Interfaces (HAPTIX external link) program. The $7 million contract external link also covers the manufacture of prosthetic limbs under the Revolutionizing Prosthetics Follow-On Studies (RPFS external link) program. The prosthetics will be used as part of a year-long trial to generate data necessary for gaining market approval and subsequently access to a larger patient pool.

The Shark Attack Extravaganza ! What You Should Know.

Shark

We’re going to kick off this weekend with a shark attack shoot-the-shit . As with all shoot-the-shit discussions, you can make unsupported comments, insult anyone you please, use profanity (even at a boatswain mate level) without feeling that you’ll be censored. Furthermore, because we believe that philosophers, psychologists and psychiatrist are living proof that free market economies produce sufficient surpluses to support what would otherwise be considered useless, you will never see a bill from this publication. So, let’s talk sharks…

A shark, of virtually any species, is nothing more than an ambulatory abdominal with serrated razor sharp teeth. In the overwhelming majority of conditions, you won’t find one in every cubic foot of water. They’re all carnivores, with the possible exception of the Baskin shark species. Sharks don’t have a large brain; they don’t swim around plotting an attack. Their vision is rather poor, but they have a highly refined bioelectrical sensory system concentrated around the snout and gill area. They can detect body fluids miles away from the source and they can detect vibration associated with thrashing miles away. Once stimulated by fluid and / or vibration they lack conscious control and will attack what it thinks is its pray. Prior to its attack, a membranous lid closes over the eyes to protect them from bone or other matter; it literally does not see.

If you’re a diver the chances of being attacked by a shark are lower than you being hit by space debris. Snorkelers are at a slightly greater risk for no other reason than you’re close to the surface; therefore, backlit. Snorkeler behavior may also add to that increased probably, and I’ll touch on that later in my article. The overwhelming majority of shark attacks are close to shore in warm water of considerable turbidity and highly oxygenated from surf and/or tidal activity.

To avoid or survive a shark attack you need to identify conditions, behavior and control your actions. So, let’s talk about that.

If you ever find yourself in travel brochure like waters, with pristine white sand ocean floors and crystalline aquarium like water, live it up. You may see an occasional sardine but that’s about it. These waters indicate a barren ecosystem absent of any flora to serve as a nutritional source. No nutrients, no herbivores; thereby, no carnivores. It’s only when you get out to the outer reefs where you get plant life and ecosystems that support a food chain. In fact if you see a shark within an inner reef it’s likely the shark was caught in tidal activity and is waiting for a high tide to get out of Dodge.

Turbidity in ocean water comes from surf and tidal activity as well as an abundance of plant matter much of which is microscopic in size. This is particularly true in coastal areas where you have residual fertilizer runoff. Shallow, warm water that is highly oxygenated by tidal and surf activity will give rise to plant matter. Under these conditions, smaller herbivores come close to shore for feeding; in the process attracting tier one predators. To a shark, warm and highly oxygenated water is like giving George Burns Viagra. The shark is highly stimulated – this does not translate to plotting against you!

What does a highly stimulated shark look like? Most visible to divers and snorkelers, a stimulated shark will change directions frequently, slightly arch its back and pull its pectoral fins together, and rocks its head from side to side. If you observe that behavior you have reason for concern. Swimmers, surfers and beachgoers present false targets. Here’s how that happens. Visualize yourself standing in waist deep water, with surf breaking around you and arms dangling in the water – form that image in your mind. The human leg tapers from thick to thin, just like the body of a fish; to that image add a human hand resting on the leg. It looks like the pectoral fins on a fish doesn’t it?. A shark with poor vision to begin with, who is also in stimulated condition, will hit that false target believing that it is pray.

Surfers with arms and feet dangling from the board and backlit by the sun look like seals. That’s the reason most surfer attacks come from the larger sharks.

Swimmers, particularly weak swimmers, tend to smack the water with hands and feet as they swim setting up vibrations that serve to attract a shark. In turbid warm water, that vibration could be enough to trigger the shark’s feeding posture.

So, what should you do when confronted by an aggressive shark. First, keep in mind that the shark will not eat you but a shark bite can cause you to bleed out. Remember that when a shark hits you, it is stimulated and you need to disconnect that instinct from its small brain. You need to be as aggressive as you can be. Hit the shark on the snout (repeatedly if necessary) and the gill area, what you’re trying to accomplish is replace the feeding drive with its self-preservation instinct.

Other things that beachgoers and swimmers should be aware of; don’t be in the water by yourself, for various reason; don’t swim in no light or low light conditions, like dusk or dawn; if you see someone fishing offshore on a boat and said boat is within a mile to half-mile from shore, don’t swim; if you see people shore fishing, don’t swim and if you are within 1 or 2 miles from a pier that allows fishing, don’t swim. All of these conditions can easily be solved by local ordinances and enforcement of existing ordnances.

Go to the beach, enjoy the sun, surf and sand but be safe through knowledge and awareness. Have a great 4th of July weekend!
