On 8 September, Katrin Suder, Germany’s State Secretary for Defence Procurement, announced to the Defense Committee of the German Parliament her intent to completely replace the Heckler & Koch G36 as the German Bundeswehr’s service rifle saying…

“the G36 was procured with a service life of 20 years in mind, which will be reached in 2016. Furthermore, the current forces’ requirements by far exceed the potential of modifications that could be made to the G36”.

The German MoD has set 2019 as the target date for its decision on a replacement service rifle.

Fabryka Broni Showcases Its New Line Of Assault Rifles Designated Modular Small Arms System MSBS 5.56mm

Polish Small Arms manufacturer, Fabryka Broni, unveiled its full line of assault rifles, in carbine and bullpup configurations at the MSPO Defense Exhibition in Kielce. The new rifle is available in 11 variants all chambered in 5.56mm N.A.T.O. Five of the 11 weapons are offered in bullpup configurations.

The MSBS line has a unique upper receiver assembly that supports interchangeable barrel assemblies which allows the rifle to be converted from carbine to sniper rifle or squad level LMG,  handguards, a classic lower receiver with a collapsible stock, or in bullpup configuration.

In the Fabryka Broni design, the upper receiver assembly is the The Polish Modular Small Arms System calibre 5.56 mm (MSBS-5.56) family of assault rifles in bullpup configuration. (Fabryka Broni)“center of the universe” upon which all things are attached, including a bullpup configuration, in contrast to our AR-15 designs where the lower receiver is the base upon which the weapon is built.

The MSBS is scheduled to also replace the Russian SKS carbines currently used by Polish ceremonial units.

At SHOT SHOW 2015, in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to speak with a representative who indicated the company’s plan to open a Texas manufacturing facility to make the MSBS rifles for the U.S. commercial space.

Personal Eye System (PES) By Mil Sistemika

pes-dismounted-commander

I finally had a chance to sit-down and write a review on what I think is one of the best Blue Force Tracking, Situational Awareness, C4ISR packages C.O.T.S. on the market. When used with PES Server, this feature rich, easy to use Android app supports a full set of navigation functions, COP (Common Operating Picture) updates, blue force tracking and remote sensor integration. MIL Sistemika offers two version of the PES app, commercial and professional. I have the opportunity to review both.

Off the shelf, professional training organizations, government agencies and law enforcement will find that PES meets or exceeds the majority of their requirements including a high level of data encryption; however, MIL Sistemika is a full system integrator capable of tailoring their C4ISR suite to meet your requirements.

If you’re an Airsoft enthusiast, or don’t require all of the features of the professional version of PES, the commercial version is available at a very reasonable price as is a PES Server subscription to provide real-time data sharing. PES runs on an Android platform. You’ll want to check PES out for sure but first read my review…

Understanding Wiping (Not Related To Potty Training)

It’s hard to keep a straight face after this title but I’ve decide to write a short piece on the topic to help readers understand how things work with a server.

A computer, or server, is a group of electronic assemblies operating under the direct control of the operating system. Operating systems include Windows, Linux, iOS, Android etc. A large part of the operating systems’ role is organizing data on a hard drive or other form of mass storage like and SD card. A hard drive which is customarily used on servers, laptops and desktop computers is very much like a record player. The platter spins at a high r.p.m. and the drive heads float over the platter’s surface. Those heads move through an actuating arm so the heads can be positioned to write to or read data from the rotating platter. All of that occurs under the operating system’s control.

When you write a letter or an e-mail message the operating system saves the data to the hard drive. Part of the process entails the creation of an index that points to where on the platter’s surface the file is stored. A file is not stored contiguously on the platter surface, it’s actually stored across a number of physical locations. Using those pointers, the operating system is able to then locate the data for later use. The same is true when you receive and e-mail or save any data to the hard drive, a pointer is created that identifies the physical location(s) on the platter where the data is stored. Once a location is used, it is no longer available for other files.

When you delete a file, you’re not erasing its actual data; you are erasing the pointers to that file. With the pointers gone, the operating system sees that physical location as being available for data storage. So, when you highlight an e-mail message and click on “Delete” you are simply removing the pointer to that e-mail. However, its text remains on the drive until it’s overwritten by the operating system.

Over time and with continuous use, a drive can become fragmented. This means that pieces of a file are scattered all over the surface of the platter. Imagine a vinyl LP where you have to continuously move the record player’s arm to listen to a single track. Fragmentation reduces the computer’s efficiency and speed. Operating systems include a utility, which when executed gathers up all of a file’s fragments and attempts to store them closer together or contiguously on the platter surface. This is a routine maintenance function that should be scheduled at standard intervals.

Wiping a drive is a process requiring dedicated software; separate from the operating system. When you wipe a drive, the software overwrites all parts of a drive for where there are no pointers. With the pointers missing, the wipe software sees a space not occupied by a live file and overwrites that space with things like ASCI Null characters, zeros, exclamation points or any other character. The objective is to overwrite whatever was originally in that space so that any old data is indiscernible. Wiping a drive is a tedious process and in order for it to be effective the software needs to run a minimum of 7 passes. Wiping a large capacity drive can take days, depending on the system. Wiping a drive does nothing to improve system performance. When properly performed it simply ensures that data previously stored on the target drive is indiscernible.

Relationship Between Muzzle Blast And Ballistic Crack

Once more Friday is  upon us and unless you’ve done something really stupid, you’ve successfully navigated through another week. To celebrate that success, our weekly shoot-the-shit topics allow you to make unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change subjects altogether! Normally this would run you hundreds of dollars from a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist or philosopher but we now these professionals (Ha! Ha! Ha!) are no more than ambulatory proof that free market economies produce sufficient surplus to support their ass, and for that reason you’ll never see a bill from us. So, without further a do, let’s leap right into our shoot-the-shit topic of the week – Relationship Between Muzzle Blast And Ballistic Crack.

Muzzle blast, is a sound wave propagating 360°  from the weapon’s muzzle as high pressure gases in the bore are uncorked by the escaping bullet. Ballistic Crack is the sound wave created by the bullet traveling faster than Mach 1.

Suppressed weapons can be fired with subsonic ammunition or supersonic ammunition. In applications were it is desirable to eliminate ballistic crack we use subsonic ammunition. In making that decision we sacrifice range, and compensate for a loss in kinetic energy by utilizing a heavier projectile. When our target is at a longer range or it’s not possible to close range to the target and still maintain stealth, we use supersonic ammunition. A supersonic round preserves the effective range performance of the caliber but its flight to the target will generate an audible ballistic crack.

Muzzle Blast - Ballistic Crack

There’s an interesting relationship between muzzle blast and ballistic crack, muzzle blast leads ballistic crack; in fact, muzzle blast overruns the exiting projectile within its first 2 feet of flight. At this point, the muzzle blast wave slows and subsides. The ballistic crack wave is characteristically different from muzzle blast in that it propagates as a cone. At muzzle velocities that cone is approximately 130°  decreasing to 0 °  as the bullet approaches Mach 1 or 1116 feet per second. As that cone decreases so does our ability to hear ballistic crack downrange. M118LR for example will reach Mach 1 at approximately 985 meters.

Sound suppressors are designed to eliminate muzzle blast and flash signature; however, when used with supersonic ammunition you can expect some degree of exposure from ballistic crack. The effect of ballistic crack is diminishing with range and appears to be limited to a maximum of 130°  which  is at the muzzle.

Chime in and let us know what you think!

Have an Outstanding Labor Day weekend, be safe, get out to the range or do something fun with your buds and family!

TPG Rapid Load-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2, Receives High Marks From NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Program

Boynton Beach, Fla. (September 2015)Tacprogear (TPG), a leading manufacturer of tactical equipment used by professionals around the globe, is proud to announce that the Rapid Load-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2 (RLO1-G2) received a 4.54 out of a possible 5 from the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) Member Tested and Recommended Program. TPG has the privilege of displaying the prestigious NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Logo in their marketing materials.

The testing officer from Virginia, who used the bag in a number of applications, including a gym bag, weekend travel bag, moderate-sized tactical equipment bag, range bag and patrol vehicle bag, commented that the RLO1 “seemed to hold much more gear than you would expect.” He remarked that the “main compartment of the bag features a clam shell design opening which permits the flap to be folded back when unzipped, exposing an area almost the same size as the center compartment, which aids in packing and unpacking and in quickly locating gear.”

Another favorite feature of the bag for the Virginia testing officer was the tarpaulin bottom material. He said “this bag spent its time on different surfaces, including gravel and asphalt, and there were no major signs of wear and no sign of moisture finding its way inside. The bottom also kept the bag upright; it would not collapse on itself when completely open, a nice touch when you’re trying to rapidly locate equipment inside.”

The testing officer from Ohio commented that the “bag is a perfect size for the important gear needed in the field. The pockets are roomy, the bag is durable and the zippers and zipper pulls are very durable. Overall, it is a very usable, handy bag.”

The Rapid Loud-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2, was designed to be an operator-friendly gear and travel bag, ready to carry all essential equipment no matter the mission. It includes new features such as an innovative tarpaulin bottom material for improved wear during adverse conditions, an embroidered TPG logo and redesigned TPG zipper pulls. Terry Naughton, Former VP of BLACKHAWK! Acquires Scopecoat

Scopecoat LLC, makers of patented optics protection for optics has been acquired by Terry Naughton, a 15-year veteran of the shooting sports and tactical industries. The company was originally founded by Dan Evans in 1994.

After damaging a scope while removing it from his safe, Evans realized there had to be a better method to protect high value optics. Using a high quality neoprene laminated with nylon, he created a custom fit for the optic. Evans’ new creation or “scope coat” protected the scope from dings, scratches, debris and as a plus, the neoprene naturally wicked moisture and condensation from the optics. Over the years, the product line has increased to include Binobib and Barrel Boot lines.

Today, the American-made Scopecoat products are distributed worldwide within the shooting sports, law enforcement and military markets. With over 80 custom fit sizes, Scopecoat is the standard of protection for leading optics brands worldwide. Scopecoat custom shop also produces logo products for militaries, government agencies, hunting lodges and sporting goods associations.

Naughton, who assumed ownership in August 2015, has a proven track record of growing markets and increasing sales. Previous positions include Vice President of Sales for Alpha Industries, Director of International Sales for ATK and Vice President Marketing of BLACKHAWK! where he integrated a family of brands under the BLACKHAWK! banner, developed B2B and B2C marketing strategies, and as a member of the senior management team, lead the successful sale and acquisition of BLACKHAWK! by ATK.

“Having grown the Scopecoat product line from the garage to worldwide acceptance, I feel confident that Terry is the best ambassador to carry the brand forward into new directions and new markets,” Dan Evans commented.

Terry Naughton, new owner and President of Scopecoat responded, “I have been a fan of the brand and have used Scopecoat on all my optics for years. I am excited to continue the strong tradition of providing ‘The World’s Best Optics Protection’ to our Military, LE and the Shooting Sports Market.”

Over the next several months, Naughton will move the company from its current location in Phoenix, Arizona, to Virginia Beach, Virginia. All production will continue to be made in the U.S.A.

Liberty Ammunition Announces New Ammo Testing Videos on YouTube

Liberty Ammunition will be releasing a video every 7-10 days showing a different caliber’s terminal ballistics with effects.

Liberty Ammunition wanted to create a round that just worked and would stop a threat in its tracks every time, no matter what. This meant not being afraid to try new and innovative approaches. At the start, Liberty Ammunition’s founder PJ Marx spent several years reviewing the ammunition offerings from around the world and developing never before seen ammunition technology.  This resulted in eight patents and the pioneering of new possibilities for small caliber ammunition.

“Liberty Ammunition’s products offer velocities that yield devastating energy at impact with phenomenal stopping power,” said Matt Phillips, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Liberty Ammunition. “We knew our approach was different and that it would really shake up the ideas about what makes ammunition effective. We’ve decided to release these video to truly exhibit the energy and performance of these defensive rounds so that the world can see that not only is our approach different, it’s better.”

The first video has already been released and shows the results of the Liberty Ammunition Civil Defense .45 ACP being fired into ballistic gel.

The next caliber to be tested will be .380 Auto, followed by .40 S&W, 9mm, 10mm Auto, .38 Special and finally .357 Magnum.

HSGI and RE Factor Collaborate To Deliver The HSGI NVG Counterweight

Screenshot 2015-08-31 11.00.10

HSGI and RE Factor collaborate to deliver the HSGI NVG Counterweight.

The NVG Counterweight, conceived by RE Factor is designed specifically for individuals using NVGs with battery pack attachment.  The pack comes with two x .45lb parkerized steel plates to give the user an additional weight of just under 1lb.  When combined with the battery pack and batteries the total counter weight can equal up to 1.5lbs offsetting the helmet mounted NVG goggles helping to make use of NVGs a more comfortable experience.  The slim counter weight design helps keep  the helmet from pushing forward when riding in aircraft or vehicles.  In addition, unlike other counter weights on the market, the counter weight does not impede the use of the NVG battery pack.
The HSGI NVG Counterweight by RE Factor is designed to allow the user to still use the on-off toggle switch as well as easily change out batteries without needing to remove the battery pack or pouch.  In addition three small pockets can be used to stash survival gear, batteries or any other small mission essential items.  The pack comes with an outer loop panel for adhesion of patches or addition illumination marking equipment.
A hook panel on the back of the pouch adheres to the back of common OPS-CORE/Team Wendy Helmets as well as two bungee support tabs that adheres to the side of the helmet to help keep the pouch in place in austere environments.

Primary Arms ACSS Reticle Dissected

This week’s shoot-the-shit is a super presentation  by one of YouTube’s best reviewers Mrgunsandgear. In this video, he engages Dimitri from Primary Arms, the ACSS designer, and guides the viewer through every aspect of this very capable reticle. The ACSS reticle is available in several of Primary Arms’ optics and has also been adopted by Trijicon as an option in the ACOG. One point that was missed in the presentation that is worth mentioning is the effect of inclination angle on the use of a vertical ranging reticle. When using a vertical ranging reticle to range a target that is above the shooter’s firing position, the target appears longer against the ranging reticle; therefore, distance estimates will be shorter than the actual target distance. When the target is below the shooter’s firing position, the target appears to be shorter against the ranging reticle; therefore, range estimates will be longer than the actual target position. In this situation the shooter should consider using a horizontal ranging reticle, which Primary Arms call a center-mass reticle.

We’d love to hear your opinion of Primary Arms’ ACSS reticle!

Enjoy the video and be sure to subscribe to Mrgunsandgear Channel. Have a great weekend. Be safe, get to the range, or do something with your buds and family.

TPG BLACK SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor and Citadel™ 10 Series Receive High Marks from NTOA.

Boynton Beach, Fla. (August 2015) – TPG BLACK, the exclusive line of American-made products offered by Tacprogear (TPG), is proud to announce that the SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor has received a 4.51 and the Citadel™ 10 Series Hard Armor Plates, has received a 4.93 out of a possible 5 from the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) Member Tested and Recommended Program. TPG has the privilege of displaying the prestigious NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Logo in their marketing materials.

The testing officer from Wyoming remarked that the SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor Vest fit well and said “if you are looking to purchase your own vest, it is definitely worth looking at for purchasing. [It] is as good as and much better in many areas than every vest I have ever worn.” When it came to the Citadel™ 10 Series hard armor plate, the officer commented on how it did not add much noticeable weight to a regular vest and that the product was easy to use. He continued, “it provides a lot more coverage for a little bit of weight while not adding much to the profile of the vest or adding much bulk. If you are looking for a lot more protection for a tiny bit of weight and size, this is the product to buy.” “When the TPG SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor Vest first arrived, all I could think was ‘this is so fluffy!’ The inside part of the carrier has a thin pillow-like effect to it which is encapsulated in a mesh-like material. Does this help the inside of the vest be more breathable? I think so,” commented the testing officer from Florida. She continued, “Overall, the vest seems to be of better quality and design than vests I’ve worn from a high-end female-only company. I highly recommend females try this vest in the future.”

In regards to the Citadel™ 10 Series, the Florida testing officer said “the plate does not seem to add a noticeable amount of weight or stiffness (in terms of mobility) to the vest when wearing it. It appears to be well constructed and rather practical. I would definitely recommend this style of plate to those who wish to upgrade the trauma plate they currently have.”

Finally, the testing officer from Connecticut was pleasantly surprised by the extreme comfort of the SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor Vest and the durability of the product when cleaned. The ballistic panels were easily removed and the carrier came out of the washer and dryer without shrinking and without visible wear marks. The testing officer also stated “that if you get this vest, you have to get the Citadel™ 10 Series hard armor plate. It is feather light and adds that extra protection which you will hopefully never need. It is an excellent addition that provides superior protection.”

With a thickness at just 0.289” and a medium flexibility, the SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor is made from 3000D Twaron® Microlam, 1000D Twaron® Laminate and 500D/750D Twaron® Ripstop in a BLACKSEAL™ construction with a Brookwood 70D with laminated polyurethane protective cover and sealed with a Sonobond Ultrasonic Bond. It is available in all TPG vest patterns, as well as OEM Armor specifications. The SYMMETRY™ SERIES IIIA Soft Armor has undergone Special Threat Testing conducted in accordance with an abbreviated and modified NIJ 0101.06 and TPG Special Threat Testing Protocol. Product applications include concealable body armor, external carriers, plate carriers and tactical body armor. Made in the USA, the Citadel™ 10 Series are lightweight hard armor plates made from 100 percent polyethylene with a polyurea protective cover. It is one of the lightest weight NIJ compliant stand-alone level III plates on the market today. Product applications include concealable body armor, external carriers and uniform carriers and is rated to protect against handguns and edged blades. Dead Air Mask HD Suppressor " Bolt-Gun Rock Star"

Lawrenceville, Ga. (August 2015)Dead Air Armament, the strikingly silent suppressor company, is proud to announce that, after much testing and evaluation, YouTuber TWANGnBANG was thoroughly impressed with the sound suppression abilities of Dead Air’s new Mask HD suppressor and declared it a “bolt-gun rock star.”

Don’t take our word for it. Click play to hear the silence for yourself.

“2015 has been called the Year of the Silencer because of all the great new companies and cans coming to market.  The Dead Air Mask HD was the one can I most wanted to get my hands on, and its excellent performance was worth the anticipation,” said Cameron Martz of TWANGnBANG fame.

The Dead Air Mask HD suppressor is constructed of titanium and stainless steel, has a Cerakote finish and easily disassembles for cleaning. It weighs in at 6.3 ounces, is 5.25 inches long and 1.070 inches in diameter. It can be used for direct thread applications and is rated for .22LR up to 5.7 x 28. It’s also backed by a no questions asked Lifetime Warranty. It retails for $499.00.

“It sounded good on my 10/22 and it sounded really good on my 22/45, but it blew me away on my bolt gun. It’s a bolt-gun rock star! It was nice shooting it at the range, but I can’t wait to get my Mask HD out of NFA jail and shoot it right here in my backyard with my daughter. Seriously, it’s quieter than her Daisy BB gun,” said Martz.

The Mask HD, when tested on a 4.4 inch pistol, reduced the decibel level from 154.6 to 115.1 for a total decibel reduction of 39.5. When tested on a 16.1″ rifle it reduced the decibel level from 140.1 to 115.8 for a total decibel reduction of 24.3.

“Another thing that I was really impressed with was the negligible point of impact shift. I experienced about an 1/8th of an inch downward shift and zero left and right shift. My bolt gun is a tack driver and the Mask HD turned out to be a great match,” remarked Martz.

Flinching

Readers, there’s cause for celebration as we’ve made it through another week in spite of the massive cluster-fucks unraveling around us,  so we’ve selected “flinching” as the topic for our weekly shoot-the-shit. As customary, all shoot-the-shit rules apply: you can make unsupported statements, insult anyone, use profanity or change the subject altogether. All of this is completely free of charge!

Flinching is one of those ills which if left untreated will ensure you remain a poor shot. Everyone has an opinion on flinching and how to cure it; some writers see it as poor trigger technique, a point that we respectfully disagree with.

Flinching is a psychosomatic response to an unpleasant event. You flinch when you mentally anticipate a weapon’s rapport, which has two components consisting of the sound blast and recoil. For example, most shooters, at some point in their marksmanship development,  have experienced anticipating a follow-up shot with an empty magazine; thus, jerking the trigger accompanied by an upper body movement. This response is caused by the shooter’s state of mind, and it’s imperative that shooters train themselves to focus on firing the weapon and their relationship to the target. To achieve that goal, sniper training, for example, includes stresses designed to break the sniper’s concentration and disrupt their shooting. The goal is to reinforce focus.

To cure flinching, the shooter needs to  discard all apprehensions about shooting. Shooters need to known that they are doing nothing wrong and they need to acclimate themselves to weapon rapport. New shooters are particularly vulnerable to suggestions that firearms are evil and that shooting is a bad thing. This is especially true at a time when firearms, sport shooting and defensive shooting are vilified. The shooter needs to be comfortable and at ease on the firing line and while handling a weapon.

Acclimating the user to weapon rapport requires training. Here an instructor has a great deal of latitude, but we offer a couple of suggestions that we’ve found useful:

  1. Interleave live ammunition with snap-caps in a magazine. You can use this technique to teach a malfunction as well as address shooter anticipation.
  2. Use a revolver with several empty chambers.

Every effort should be made to ensure unpredictability, remember that you are treating shooter anticipation. You want your trainee to focus only on trigger control and sight alignment, not anticipate weapon rapport so mix things up for them.

We think you’ll find these techniques useful and something to include in more advanced training also. The key to excellent shooting is focus, focus, focus.

Have a great weekend; get to the range or get out with your buds and family!
