Building A Credible Sniper System

We regularly see questions asking for recommendations on things like; what’s the best scope to get, the best reticle, best bipod, best rifle or best ammo. We try to steer our readers to view their equipment as a system and not discrete components. So, for this week’s shoot–the-shit topic we’ll go through our thought process. Please feel free to make any unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone or change the subject altogether. You’ll experience no subliminal messaging or a bill from us.

The economics of building a high performance system are not trivial; a sniper system, like the Remington shown in the picture above, can run the buyer  well over $20,000, and that does not include thermal or image intensified optics. You can reasonably expect the numbers to breakdown something like this; $5,000 – $8,000 for the rifle, $ 2,000 – $4,000 for the optics, another $500 – $1,000 for bases and optic mounts, extra magazines will run you $60 – $200 each depending on the rifle, muzzle devices (unsuppressed) $150 – $350, suppressor $ 1,000 – $2,000 depending on material, mounting arrangement and caliber, and lastly about $500 for all the miscellaneous items like slings cases etc. No matter how you slice it a very expensive proposition, even on a DoD budget. Unfortunately, if you take the discrete component approach, you can end up spending a lot of cash for a system that doesn’t perform as well as a less expensive arrangement that was built as a system.

Using a systems approach requires first and foremost that you clearly define your objectives. Once you’ve decided what your system needs to do, you’ll want to define how well it needs to do it keeping diminishing returns in mind. Once that’s done you can design your platform by examining how the various discrete components interact, but before you run out and plunk down a bunch of cash have it all penciled and researched. Failing to do that guarantees that you’ll spend more than you have to and not achieve your desired objective.

Not long ago, I ran across an individual with a custom built .308 rifles, top of the line mounting hardware; all topped off by a Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25×56. The shooter could not hold a minute of angle out to 300 yards. Some of it was his shooting, but the real problem was operating the scope at its highest magnification which amplified the effects of mirage. I don’t know what this individual’s objectives were but it was clear to me he didn’t plan before building his system. By over-scoping his rifle, he effectively reduced his field of view at lower magnifications as well as the higher magnification levels; making tracking a moving target much more difficult. When you consider the effective range of the .308 caliber it’s easy to see that his optic selection was misguided. So, to make a long story short, not matching his caliber to his optics resulted in poor overall performance.

This is our thought process on the subject. We think it’s a good way to maximize your return on investment and the level of satisfaction you derive from that investment.

Send us your comments / questions. Have a great Halloween weekend. Be safe; get out to the range with your buds and family!

(Houston, TX) – Battle Rifle Company will introduce their latest addition: the BR4 Trident at the 2015 NASGW show.
The BR4 Trident is the first rifle specifically designed for MARSEC (Maritime Security) operations and shipboard usage. Built and constructed for long lasting life in extreme weather conditions, the BR4 Trident is unlike any other rifle and suited perfectly for marine environments.
Available with an 11.5″ or 16″ barrel, all major components of the BR4 Trident have a Hi-Temp Cerakote finish including the upper and lower receivers, buffer tube, forearm quad-rail and the front sight base. The rifle includes a 416S Stainless Steel Hi-Temp Cerakote finished Cryogenically treated barrel with a 1:7 twist, and also comes with a stainless steel fire control group, nickel boron M16 profile bolt carrier group, stainless steel pins and lower parts, stainless steel springs and a narrow comfort grip quad rail. All the components are coated with Nano Technology to insure a water tight seal that prevents corrosion and rust due to wet environmental conditions.

“Careful consideration was given that no direct ferrous metal to metal contact was made throughout the entire rifle,” says Noah Maudalin, Battle Rifle Company Master Gunsmith. “The rifle comes in Semi and select fire models; needless to say, we are all super excited to introduce this to marine security divisions as well as the general public.”

Surviving A Hand-To-Hand Encounter

While perusing a publication, we ran across an article that attracted our attention. Before jumping to any conclusions,  we know the training depicted is conducted by a highly reputable and competent individual, so this is in no way a criticism of the training and/or trainer. Having said that, our opinion on hand-to-hand  is that surviving an encounter requires the observance of some basic rules.

  1. Hand-to- hand engagements are a pain in the ass. They are not a measure of manhood and if it were to be discovered that you got into a hand-to-hand engagement, applications to yacht clubs, country clubs or Upper East Side Commons would be immediately declined. Hand-to-hand engagements occur because you failed to lanyard your pistol and carry a knife.
  2. It’s quite likely that your assailant is not wearing a plate carrier with 20 pounds of gear attached. Hence, your assailant has a great grip on you.
  3. If the assailant is pulling on you do not try to pull away. Walk right into the guy and if you can get into his skives do so.
  4. If the assailant is pushing on you, do not stand there and resist the guy. Walk right back with the guy.
  5. The next rules require the use of the two pictures below…

20151005_18024720151005_180232-1

6. An assailant that is holding on to you with both hands is unlikely to be holding a gun or knife to use against you.

7. If you are holding on to your assailant you have no way to use your knife or gun.

8. Keep cool and thinking the fight will always go to the individual that is thinking.

Setting Eunit And Wunit Parameters In Kestrel’s AB Weather Meters

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. We hope the Force has been with you throughout the week. Today, we’d like to shed some light on a topic that requires a bit of illumination – How to properly setup Elevation units(Eunit) and Wind units (Wunit) in the Applied Ballistics Kestrel meter. It’s not intuitive.

When initially setting up a gun in the AB software, the user is required to enter a number of parameters like muzzle velocity, bullet weight and SH (sight height). The user is also asked for Eunit (elevation unit) and Wunit (wind unit). Here the user is given a choice of mil, tmoa (true minute of angle), smoa (shooter’s minute of angle) or click. It’s very simple at this point to assume that you are being asked how your elevation and wind turrets are calibrated, which is not correct.

When you select the Eunit what you’re actually doing is selecting how the firing solution is displayed. For example if one lets Eunit = tmoa  Eclick defaults to N/A and there’s no way to define the Eclick (elevation click value) the same holds true for Wunit. The latter holds true if you set Eunit and Wunit to mil or smoa, the corresponding Eclick and Wclick value will be N/A. In all three scenarios, your ballistic firing solution will display Elevation and Wind values in Mils, TMOA or SMOA.

It is only when you select Eunit = click and/or Wunit = click that you are allowed to define the click value and here is how you do that.

Example 1

To set Eunit or Wunit for clicks proceed as follows.

Set Eunit = click  – move down to Eclick – Press Enter – now adjust to match the elevation turret’s calibration (per tmoa, per smoa or per mil) – select a value, for example “per tmoa” – Now Exit to get back to Eclick – Lastly, using the adjust arrows select the appropriate click value, for example 2/tmoa.

Your display will look like this…

  • Eunit     click
  • Eclick   2/tmoa

Example 2

The shooter wants to use holdover or under for elevation but wants to dial in wind. This is the appropriate setup for that configuration.

Eunit = mil Eclick = n/a

Wunit = click Eclick = 10/mil

Example 3

The shooter wants to dial elevation and hold for wind, but he has an optic reticle that is calibrated in MOA.

Eunit = click  Eclick = 2/tmoa

Wunit = tmoa   Wclick = n/a

When you look at the ballistic solution, the elevation parameter represents clicks and the wind parameter will be the hold in tmoa.

This is a feature that allows the AB application to adapt to a wide range of reticles and shooter preferences. If you are shooting with a reticle that provides no ranging information, for example a duplex reticle set Eunit = click and Wunit =click.

As customary, all shoot-the shit rules apply so let us hear from you.

Have a great weekend readers, be safe and spend some quality time with your buds and family!

KARAMBITS AVAILABLE!

Well….. here they are. Finally.  Our “most ripped off model” in China, and some of the time the selling websites even claim funny little things like it was designed by Israeli Mossad… It was designed here in the good old USA by Andrew, Ben, Steve Hacht and Bryce Grey. I have a limited amount of these due to the way the design creates so much steel waste. They are Not cost effective to make, but I refuse to sacrifice the design just to get more out of a sheet.
I’ll be running them in Black or Fenrir, for this run, and a few for special finishes for knives of the week. A few are ready to go, but I’m catching up the second set of 16 pieces to the first set…. so Ship date on these is Oct 27th.  I can only run so many at a time, so Get’em while they are here!

-Thanks,
Ben Bawidamann

Barometric Pressure And Altitude

T.G.I.F. It’s time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. This week  we continue where we left of with last Friday’s Station Pressure vs. Barometric Pressure topic.

What is a shoot-the-shit? It’s a social interaction during which participants can make any claim without factual support, insult or denigrate anyone they wish, use uncensored profanity – even if you are a boatswain mate or you can change the subject altogether. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists and philosophers, all of whom are living proof that free market economies produce sufficient surpluses to support their ass, we don’t charge you!

So, let’s get on with barometric pressure and altitude…

Last Friday we talked about station pressure and barometric pressure. We said that to measure pressure we need a meter, like the Kestrel Weather Meter, and that to measure station pressure, we need to set the reference altitude to zero. We then went on to say that to measure barometric pressure, we set the reference altitude to the correct altitude at your location

Pressure

Note the difference in pressure readings between the two pictures on the left. This difference is converted to altitude in weather meter software. In our  case, the difference between station pressure and barometric pressure is 0.15InHg which translates to 131.4 feet. This value is a measure of the size  of the column of air from your elevation to sea level, hence it translates to your altitude.

When I make an approach to an airport, I contact approach control, or UNICOM, and ask for the altimeter setting if it’s not being broadcast. Approach control won’t say 300 feet theyaircraft-altimeter-2214974’ll say 29.97. The 29.97 translates to a specific column of air above sea level. Your weather meter works very much like an aircraft altimeter.

Take a look at the altimeter on the right. You’ll notice the two small windows at the bottom of the altimeter’s face, the one on the right is pressure in INHg and the one on the left is in milibars. When approach control tells me altimeter at 29.97 they are providing the barometric pressure in INHg. I then rotate the knob in the lower right hand corner and set INHg to 29.97. Now the altimeter will correctly indicate elevation.

P1000299

To arrive at a reasonable altitude reading from your weather meter, you need to set the reference to the barometric pressure for your area.  Don’t expect the meter’s indicated altitude to exactly match that of a topographic map. Even GPS elevation values are often off by as much as 90 meters and more. The reason for the error stems from the fact that GPS receivers calculate position and elevation by measuring time differences between the signals from at least 4 satellites, and any anomaly (terrain, structures, atmospherics, forest canopies, etc.) will influence the position and elevation calculation generating the error.

For ballistic purposes, altitude – better stated as pressure altitude – is not a requirement. What you’ll need is temperature, wind speed, wind angle, station pressure, relative humidity and/or density altitude to arrive at an accurate firing solution.

As customary, we like hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend. Get some range time in with your buds and family!

Bryan Litz On Muzzle Velocity

Bryan Litz is a ballistician for Berger Bullets and Applied Ballistics. Bryan has authored a number of authoritative books on the subject of ballistics. His software, published by Applied Ballistics, can be found on a number of devices including the Kestrel Wind Meters by Nielsen Kellerman. The Applied Ballistics software and smart device app is considered an industry standard used by law enforcement and military units across the world.

Understanding your rifle’s and ammunition muzzle velocity is the most important parameter needed in calculating a firing solution. Establishing accurate muzzle velocity data requires the use of an accurate chronograph. The chronograph should be able to record several strings of ten shots each and calculate the string’s average muzzle velocity and one standard deviation.

What does one standard deviation mean? It means a shooter can expect that 68% of all shots fired will have a muzzle velocity falling within a band that is 10 fps above the average muzzle velocity or 10 fps below the average. The smaller the standard deviation the closer 68% of shots fired will be to the Avg. MV.

These instruments are not inexpensive so most professional grade ballistics applications have a truing function. Truing means determining the muzzle velocity by determining the amount of elevation needed to hit the target center at any range but preferably at the longest range where the projectile is still supersonic. By knowing the precise elevation needed, you can determine average muzzle velocity. I recommend that you true to using three ranges at a minimum. Also keep in mind that muzzle velocity varies with temperature, station pressure and relative humidity so run your truing calculations and several temperatures for best results. It’s a time consuming process but essential for accurate velocity data.

Raytheon’s PIKE 40mm Precision-Guided Munition

pike_40_725

Raytheon Company has just extended the rage of the 40mm grenade launcher out to 2000+ meters. The company has successfully fired 2 PIKE 40mm grenades from the standard M320 Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (EGLM) launcher. Both rounds flew 2,300 meters impacting within the target area. The PIKE weighs less than 2 pounds and is 16.8 inches long.

The PIKE 40mm munition uses a digital semi-active laser seeker to engage both fixed and slow movers. The rocket motor ignites in 10 feet after leaving the tube. Additional Pike upgrades include the ability to fire it from platform-mounted launchers on small boats, all-terrain vehicles and small unmanned aircraft systems.

HONK IF YOU ARE TIRED OF THE DEBATE HOOPLA

We promise to limit political posts to as few as possible, but the upcoming 2016 election has enormous implications for us all, and we are tired of the debate hoopla. Having CNN and FOX, or any network for that matter, supply moderator and debate panels is about as revealing of candidate position as walking through the dark of night. These debates are nothing more than commercial events to drive ratings and advertising revenues. So, we’re proposing the following changes.

  1. No more than two debates per election cycle for each of the parties. This means two debates per party prior to the primaries, then two debates prior to the general election.
  2. Moderator to be chosen from the academic community.
  3. Debate panel should come from the opposing party’s national committee. So if the candidates are Republican, the debate panel should be representatives from the Democratic National Committee.
  4. Cost of the debates should be absorbed by the parties and  licensed to all networks.
