MILIPOL 2015 Beretta

I had the opportunity to sit with the Beretta folks last year and they were kind enough to take me through the iProtect concept and the underlying technology. Without getting into laborious technical details what iProtect does is provide command and control with situational awareness by “sensorizing” the operator or police officer, the weapon and a networked holster.  Using the 3G environment iProtect is able to send back operator vital signs, indications that his or her weapon is drawn and the number of shoots fired. All of this occurs real-time. Equally important officer or operator position is continuously transmitted without the officer or operator being tethered to his or her vehicle. It’s impressive, futuristic and enlightened!

Hartman MH1 Reflex Sight

Tullytown, Pa. (November 2015)- Hartman Ltd., a new innovative optics company, is proud to announce the ultimate red dot reflex sight: the MH1. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of worldwide armed forces, law enforcement and sportsman alike, the MH1 Reflex Sight is unlike any red dot reflex sight ever created. The MH1 breaks new ground in field of view, reticle design, quick reaction, user interface and battery efficiency.

The patent pending advanced red dot sight offers the largest field of view through the sight, instantly improving target acquisition and situational awareness in day and night scenarios. The MH1 produces a near “0” parallax increasing accuracy. The unique reticle helps keep the firearm on a vertical plane using balancing lines at 3 and 9 o’clock with a centered red dot. The reticle also always stays on target independently of the operator’s eye location in the MH1 window.

CEO and Co-Founder Lt. Col. _Ret._ Mikey Hartman of the IDF and MH1 Red Dot Reflex Sight.

The MH1’s innovative design allows operators to attach additional magnifiers or night vision devices behind the sight. Once attached, the operator will not have any difficulty accessing the controls of the MH1 for both left and right-hand shooters.

For operators in the field, battery use and preservation is critical to mission success. The MH1 offers a different approach to battery consumption from other reflex sights. The sight charges via a USB rechargeable battery plugged into any wall socket, computer or lighter. A single backup CR123 battery installed provides extended battery life. Additionally, the MH1’s sleep mode and dual 30 degree motion sensors only activate the sight when a shooting movement occurs, greatly enhancing battery life.

The MH1 red dot reflex sight is built to MIL-STD-810F and designed to perform in the most challenging environments. A composite reinforced polymer housing protects the interior technologies and a forged aviation grade aluminum QD mount and base keep the MH1 operating under the most extreme conditions. The sight is pressure filled with nitrogen gas and fully sealed to prevent fogging or dust from entering the sight. The outer surfaces of the window have been specially coated to produce high clarity with no mirror like reflection from the objective side of the sight that would give away the user’s position, an extremely valuable benefit for law enforcement and military personnel.

Options for the MH1 include a custom user interface that allows the user to reprogram some of the MH1’s features and customize the sight for various sleep mode activation time and reticle brightness levels, motion sensors and more. Another option is the ambidextrous infrared push-to-transmit (PTT) strap, making the MH1 the only remote-controlled reflex sight. The PTT activates the sight and controls reticle brightness levels (10 levels – 5 for day and 5 for night). It allows the user to control the sight without disengaging the supporting hand from the weapon, thus always remaining ready and reducing critical reaction time.

The new Hartman MH1 Reflex Sight is available in black, tan or green with an MSRP of $650.00. The optional remote control strap (PTT) has an MSRP of $49.95.

RANGING WITH A DRAGUNOV RETICLE

We hope that you’ve had a pleasant and productive week – I know we sure as shit have. So we are all looking forward to the weekend. It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Last week, I expressed a liking for the Dragunov ranging reticle stating that it was surprisingly accurate and fast. So we thought readers may enjoy learning how to range with the Dragunov reticle. All shoot-the-shit rules apply

Slide 1

The Dragunov reticle is very simple to interpret. The horizontal stadia is for lead and wind and the vertical chevrons are hold points calibrated for the 7.62 x 54r.

The ranging components consist of markings ranging from 200 meters to 1000 meters. The 1.7 indicates the ranging scale calibration, which in this case is 1.7 meters or 67 inches.  There’s nothing magical about about the 1.7 meter reference; I’ve use Dragunov reticles with a 1.8 meter reference. So don’t sweat it.

All optical ranging is error prone and in practice you’re obtaining a range estimate that will vary with shooting angle to the target and your ability. The “goal” is to be within 20 yards of actual target range. The first question that pops up from folks that have never shot a Dragunov reticle is “what to I do if my target is 75 inches tall?” My answer is don’t worry.

So, let’s start ranging.

To use a Dragunov ranging reticle you bracket the target such that your target exactly fits between the top and bottom stadia. So, our first target, viewing from right to left is at approximately 200 meters. However, not all targets will be fully exposed; you may only have a full torso. So, what then? Let’s see if we can figure it out. Take a look at the next target, this is a full torso presentation that brackets exactly at the 400 meter mark, but 400 meters is not your targets true range. A full torso is approximately 1/2 of the full target so divide 400 by 2 and his range is approximately 200 meters.

Continuing to move left. We encounter a target that presents just a head and shoulders, which is approximately 1/5 of a full size target, so what’s your targets range? Simply divide 700 by 5 or 140 meters.

Our last target is a full presentation and is perfectly bracketed at the 1000 meter mark. His range is 1000 meters.

As you can see, it’s a very simple ranging mechanism that is not as precise as a mildot but makes up for it with speed and simplicity.

We love hearing from you so be sure to let us know what you think.

Have a great weekend be safe but have some fun. Get out to the range with your buds and / or family!

OUR 2015 HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING IDEAS

Each year we go back through many of the items we’ve had the opportunity to review and select 10 that we feel would make exceptional gifts or stocking stuffers. The selection criteria is heavily influence by function, reliability, relevance and value. A $300 widget that solves nothing won’t make the list.  They also represent products from mature retailers and manufacturers who are committed to customer service. So, with that in mind we’d like to present our Holiday Shopping Ideas for 2015.

P1000258

In the number one spot is the Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 IWB  holster. The Tuck 3.0 is by far the most comfortable inside the waistband holster that I’ve ever worn. This concealed carry IWB holster can be equipped with a variety of belt clips, including the nylon “C” clips and “J” clips. The Cloak Tuck 3.0 also has the ability to house multiple shells, allowing concealed carriers to swap out their guns while keeping the same holster base. M.S.R.P. $43.88

P1000247

Next up is Streamlight’s ProTac HL USB. This compact light is capable of producing an 850 lumen extremely well collimated light beam that will expose even the darkest recesses several hundred yards out. The light runs on rechargeable batteries that can be recharged directly from the USB port on your laptop, your vehicle or solar panel charger. The ProTac HL USB also runs on two lithium CR123A batteries. Streamlight has a number of accessories including an international USB power adapter. The ProTac HL USB is selling for just over $100 at a number of online retailers. For a comprehensive review click here.

DSC_3215

Streamlight’s TLR-6 is our number 3 pick; Glock 43 owners will love the TLR-6. We think it’s by far the best weapon mounted laser / light combination. The TLR-6 installs easily and securely on the “railess” Glock 43. Activation and mode selection is accomplished using the ambidextrous pressure pads. This light will produce a 100 lumen beam and an aiming laser that can be precisely adjusted for wind and elevation.  The TLR-6 was specifically designed to mount on the highly successful Glock 42 and 43 subcompact pistols. The light runs on two CR1/3N lithium batteries and is available for just over $100. Read our review here.

DSC_3151Our number 4 pick is Spyderco’s Reverse. The Reverse is a very cool fixed blade knife that’s a collaboration between Craig Douglas, aka “Southnarc,” and Michael Janich. Douglas is an “edge-in” advocate while Janich is an “edge-out” advocate. So what better compromise than to create a compact and highly effective fixed blade knife that allows for both edge orientations.

The Reverse’s blade is precision machined from CTS® BD1 stainless steel. Its slightly concave edge profile and full-flat grind give it a very acute point and an extremely aggressive low-drag edge geometry. To facilitate convenient carry and quick access, the Reverse includes a custom-molded Boltaron® sheath that is specially designed to allow the knife to fit securely with both handle configurations. An angle-adjustable G-Clip™ attachment provides both belt and inside-the-waistband carry to support a broad range of carry preferences. M.S.R.P. is $149.95 but you’ll want to shop it for some very attractive deals. Read our review here.

P1000164

Number 5 of our list is Petzl’s Pirana. The Pirana descender is not new but it’s by far the best tool around for a controlled rappel or emergency egress. There are three breaking positions you can chose before starting the rappel, you can also easily adjust resistance while rappelling or tie off. We selected the Pirana for its functionality, reliability and simplicity. We feel that it is a better solution than the Huit. You can pick one up at Moosejaw, REI for a little over $40 including tax and shipping. A great tool t have in your kit.

P1000304

CRKT’s Williams Design Yukanto  was our number 6 pick. Just looking at this very deadly fixed blade knife leaves you breathless. It’s classic Japanese personality coupled with CRKT’s manufacturing prowess translates to one amazing defensive tool. The Yukanto™ features a clip-blade crafted in the Osaraku style made famous by the 16th century Samurai warlord, Takeda Shingen. Compact in size, it still comes up big on cutting abilities when called upon for duty. It’s no wonder the name translates to “Sword of Valor”. M.S.R.P. is $99.99 You can read our in-depth review by clicking here.

Number 7 on our list is LaserLyte’s Trigger Tyme™ Laser Training Pistol. Experienced shooters be they sport, law enforcement or military have their preferred techniques and tips for exceptional shooting. However, within that diversity, there is a common thread that training is essential and that firearm skills are perishable if not preserved. LaserLyte’s Laser Training Pistol makes training safe, portable and cost effective. By itself, the shooter can engage a paper target and observe his or her trigger control and perfect draw. When combined with several of LaserLyte’s laser training targets, shooters can create an effective and safe training environment. You can read our review here. M.S.R.P. is $149.95

P1000105

Number 8 on our list is the Crimson Trace LG-919 G10 Master Series Lasergrips. These grips represent a standards setting level of refinement. CTC’s decision to use a micro laser lens solved an all too common problem with Level 2 and Level 3 tactical holsters. In this rendition, nothing was taken for granted and nothing was overlooked.  The LG-919 provides a hand-filling grip for exceptional control. If you own a 1911 without the accessory rail, you couldn’t do better than with the Crimson Trace LG-919 G10 Master Series Lasergrips.  M.S.R.P. is $399

Read our comprehensive review here

Burris XTR-II 2-10 x 42 is number 9 on this year’s list for very good reason. Simply stated it’s a very high quality magnified optic with considerable Steiner influence. Our review was of the 2-10 x 42 and you can read that here. Optical clarity is excellent as is color rendition and tracking. The XTR-II are a First Focal Plane design featuring mil reticles (other reticle types are also available) and mil turrets, reticle illumination and side parallax adjustment.  We can’t recommend this optic more highly and at prices ranging $900 – $1,500 they qualify as a “Honey I Love You” gift.

Read our review here

We close with our 10th great piece of kit, for 2015, the Streamlight TLR-2 HL G (Green Laser). Not all green lasers are created equal and what separates men from the boys is the operating temperature range. Your garden variety green laser aiming model has a limited environmental temperature range. Streamlight retains the typical TLR packaging and mounting system but really cranked up performance with the 720 lumen TIR LED and the direct drive Green LED laser with an operating temperature range of 40F to 120F. M.S.R.P is $580 which is a tremendous value for this professional grade accessory.

You can read our detailed review here.

IWI WILL INTRODUCE ITS PISTOL eLOG SMALL ARMS MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL SYSTEM AT MILIPOL 2015

IWI Jericho Pistol-5

November 12, 2015 – Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) a leader in the production of combat-proven small arms for law enforcement agencies as well as governments and armies around the world – will introduce its pistol configuration for the revolutionary eLog comprehensive small arms management and control solution. The system allows Law Enforcement and Special Forces full control of their weapons arsenal, assuring that pistols will be ready for use when needed.

According to Uri Amit, President and CEO, “The responses which began immediately following the launch of our unique solution – about six months ago – have been exceptional, as are the non-stop customer inquiries. It seems there is a general understanding that this control over weapons arsenals, whether law enforcement or military, can critically affect the readiness of the forces in real time, drastically reducing battlefield mishaps – and ultimately can enable significant savings in logistics and maintenance.”

Mr. Amit further stated, “The solution is currently undergoing an evaluation process by a number of police forces and armies – and was recently acquired by a prestigious Special Forces unit. Following the need that we have identified and inquiries from customers, we have expanded the solution, which now is available for all types of pistols.”

The solution, suitable for all types of pistols, will be demonstrated at the exhibition on JERICHO and Glock pistols. In addition, the company will present its entire portfolio, including the newcomers – the DAN .338 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle and the NEGEV NG7 LMG.

IWI Jericho Pistol-3About eLog

eLog – a comprehensive small arms management & control solution – digitizes the performance of every weapon system – providing precise, previously unavailable information, and allowing superior small arms and spare parts inventory and maintenance management at all levels, including theft alerts. The eLog system consists of three main components: weapon-embedded sensor modules, terminals that collect available data, and armorer management software.

The Concealed Sensor Module records the firearm’s real-time operation and performance, including the number of shots fired, the weapon’s serial number, and the last shooting record. Operated by a replaceable coin battery with an average cycle of at least 3 years, the sensor communicates with the terminal reader via RF technology, transmitting within a range of up to 40m.

There’s a lot hubbub surrounding the September 2015 USSOCOM Safety of Use Message  identifying L3-EOTech Enhanced Combat Optical Sights (ECOS) SU- 231/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-533-0941, SU-231A/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-587-9345, SU-231D/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-591-7601, SU-253/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-566-2844, and SU-264/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-590-7763.

One of the problems that I have with breaking this news is that it leads readers to conclusions that are simply not support by facts, and I’ll get to the SEC filling shortly.

From reading the Safety of Use Message, the problems appear to have been associated with the SU-231 and SU-231A. NSW Crane, out of an abundance of caution, communicated their findings to the SOF community and requested caution across the entire ECOS inventory. There was no disclosure of test protocols and sample sizes so there’s no way to draw a reasonable conclusion  about the overall impact.

The elimination of temperature range performance in the owners manual is not a nefarious act. It is a responsible action taken by a responsible company to eliminate any impressions of misrepresentation. This action appears to have been taken within a reasonable time of the company becoming aware of the problem. So, I wouldn’t view that as a confession or anything other than a responsible action. All that aside, a company is legally allowed to change specifications without providing notice.

With regards to the SEC filling, and you wouldn’t know this unless you’ve actually filed 10Ks and 10Qs,  the SEC, FASB and GAAP requires that any exposure to current or future operations must be disclosed. In all cases, the exposure is presented in the worst possible light. This is done in the interest of a principal called Conservatism. SEC attorneys  excel at finding the most damning language possible to avoid stockholder lawsuits or SEC enforcement actions. L3 Communications has annual gross revenues in the $12 billion to $13 billion range. Hence a $23 million exposure, although material from financial reporting standards, represents postage money! Also keep in mind that the $23 million exposure is under the worst possible conditions. The actual exposure may be substantially less.

All of this is to say that as members of the broadcast media we should probably stop drawing conclusions that are simply unsupported. Please tells us about the deficiencies encountered, but please don’t paint images that are simply unwarranted.  L3 EOTech doesn’t deserve that – it’s like the HK extravaganza not too long ago.

There’s simply nothing nefarious going on with L3 EOTech and the company is addressing the problem responsibly.

EVOLUTIONAL CHANGES IN GOOGLE’S ANDROID – ARE THEY FOR YOU?

Nearly all of our readers use a smart device for field use to include ballistics computation and navigation. If you fit that mold, it’s important for you to know that changes in the Android operating system may not support the Apps that you’ve come to know and trust, so don’t get rid of that older device before you ask all of the right questions.

For example, beginning with Android 4.4, Google has removed an app’s write privileges to your external SD card. The implications are insidious and not understood by sales people or the consumers. So, here’s what it means.

Removing write app privileges  to the external SD card means that all app data has to be stored in device memory which is undesirable for several reasons. First, it uses more of your internal device memory potentially impacting performance (it’s bad enough that you can’t delete 90% of the crap they install on the device).

Second, if you need to uninstall and reinstall the App, you can kiss app data, that you’ve painstakingly been collecting for years, goodbye! This forces you to use a cloud service to backup your data, and of course Google would prefer you use theirs. It’s a pretty underhanded way of generating incremental revenues by forcing your hand. Remember you paid for this smart device!

Another issue you need to be aware of is the elimination of magnetometers and accelerometers in devices running Android 4.4 and higher. Elimination of these sensors due to Android constraints will prevent you from using compass apps or any navigation application that supplies magnetic bearings or needs magnetic information. One example is a ballistic application that needs direction of fire. No magnetometer means no azimuth data.

If you have something that is working well for you now, don’t upgrade because you may obsolete yourself out of business. You’re much better off keeping your older phone and tablet.

WHAT MAGNIFICATION IS BEST FOR THE AK’s 7.62 x 39

Here we are once more, one week closer to Black Friday, Christmas and New Year’s. It’s also a Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit.

This week’s topic was going to be “How to identify a moron,” the last minute one of our less sophisticated readers suggested “Why I’m not the 40% of men with erectile dysfunction” – I assume in response to the recent  blast of Viagra commercials. Thank God, last minute, we got a question from a reader wanting some guidance on the proper level of magnification to use with an AK, so we thank him for that. As with all shoot-the-shits, you are free to make any unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject back to Viagra. You are free to do so without censure.

Here’s our take on magnified optics for the AK platform. The 7.62 x 39 cartridge was developed for barrier penetration and small enough were a large amount could be carried. Its external ballistics and bullet geometry were never intended for precision work – by precision we mean 1 MOA or less. That’s the reason why I like the supersonic 300 Blackout.

For a variety of reasons, the best you can consistently expect from your AK, operated by an experience shooter, is 3 MOA. Weapon tolerances and ammunition are simply not intended for precision work. If precision is your goal from Eastern European weapon systems we would suggest the SVD or similar platform. So, the objective for a magnified optic becomes a need to get a better view of what you are shooting at, and for that we suggest magnifications that give you a good field of view at ranges in the order of 300 meters to 600 meters and that you can do with a 4x to 6x. This may seem like a narrow range but you’d be amazed at how much influence these magnification levels have on field of view at typical effective ranges. You may also want to consider a Dragunov style optic. Ranging with a Dragunov reticle is extremely fast and surprisingly accurate.

Let us know what you think!

Have a safe and relaxing weekend with your buds and family. Get to the range and keep your skills current

SIG IS NOW SHIPPING THE P225 A1

The SIG P225 was, for a long time, a stable for the German Police and other law enforcement agencies. The single stack 9 mm compact frame pistol performed extremely well with superb accuracy and reliability. . German Police discontinued its use in 1996 and went out of production shortly thereafter.

AT SHOT SHOW 2015, SIG indicated they were bringing back the P225 with a significant number of upgrades driving the A1 designation. The P225 lacked a good finish, that was changed in the A1. DA trigger pull for the P225 was in the order of 12lbs., that was decreased to 10 lbs. in the A1. In SA SIG kept the 4.4lbs of the original P225.

I can’t speak highly enough on the P225 and from all indications the P225 A1 will prove itself to be a highly successful offering.

Tom Bender Van Nuys’ Blade Smith

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A little over a year ago, I had the opportunity to review one of Tom Bender’s blades, which you can read here.

Tom is an amazing Connecticut Yankee now living in Van Nuys, CA. There’s probably not an action film worth watching where Tom has not had a hand in both its armament and explosions. The man has more Federal and ATF licenses than anyone I’ve ever know; if that’s not enough for you, he’s also an accomplished blade smith.

The picture above is of a knife he made for Roque  Wincker, Co-founder and Senior Vice President of Global Operations at C-T Watch, Inc. ( COUNTER-TERRORISM WATCH, INCORPORATED,) Los Angeles, CA.

Mr Wicker is actively engaged in all aspects of Global operations as well as delivering the strategic vision of C-T Watch, Inc. With an extreme emphasis on quality services and people, Mr. Wicker strives for 110% customer satisfaction & employee satisfaction. Mr. Wicker is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and has worked with the Naval Special Warfare Community, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), and VSW (Very Shallow Mine Countermeasures Detachment) and has consulted with Specialized Diving Communities within the Federal government and state agencies.

Prior to starting up C-T Watch, Mr. Wicker came from healthcare contracting and management where he was actively involved with management contract retention, hospital financial auditing, facility start-up, program management, and regional operations. He started his healthcare career at UCLA then transferred to a national management company owned by a global private equity firm (Jordan Industries). Mr. Wicker moved up to Regional Vice President in less than 3 years. Mr. Wicker is a member of the (AFIO) Association of Former Intelligence Officers, Honorary member of the National Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association of (NATEODA), Associate member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), Member of National Academy of Police Divers (NAPD) and sits on several City Boards in the Los Angeles area.

I’ll sum up Tom’s goal for knife making by expressing his view  – “a desire to produce a tool that’s not fancy but will punch through a ribcage” He meets that objective in Roque’s knife and it will undoubtedly serve him well.
