KARAMBITS AVAILABLE!

Well….. here they are. Finally.  Our “most ripped off model” in China, and some of the time the selling websites even claim funny little things like it was designed by Israeli Mossad… It was designed here in the good old USA by Andrew, Ben, Steve Hacht and Bryce Grey. I have a limited amount of these due to the way the design creates so much steel waste. They are Not cost effective to make, but I refuse to sacrifice the design just to get more out of a sheet.
I’ll be running them in Black or Fenrir, for this run, and a few for special finishes for knives of the week. A few are ready to go, but I’m catching up the second set of 16 pieces to the first set…. so Ship date on these is Oct 27th.  I can only run so many at a time, so Get’em while they are here!

Barometric Pressure And Altitude

T.G.I.F. It’s time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. This week  we continue where we left of with last Friday’s Station Pressure vs. Barometric Pressure topic.

What is a shoot-the-shit? It’s a social interaction during which participants can make any claim without factual support, insult or denigrate anyone they wish, use uncensored profanity – even if you are a boatswain mate or you can change the subject altogether. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists and philosophers, all of whom are living proof that free market economies produce sufficient surpluses to support their ass, we don’t charge you!

So, let’s get on with barometric pressure and altitude…

Last Friday we talked about station pressure and barometric pressure. We said that to measure pressure we need a meter, like the Kestrel Weather Meter, and that to measure station pressure, we need to set the reference altitude to zero. We then went on to say that to measure barometric pressure, we set the reference altitude to the correct altitude at your location

Pressure

Note the difference in pressure readings between the two pictures on the left. This difference is converted to altitude in weather meter software. In our  case, the difference between station pressure and barometric pressure is 0.15InHg which translates to 131.4 feet. This value is a measure of the size  of the column of air from your elevation to sea level, hence it translates to your altitude.

When I make an approach to an airport, I contact approach control, or UNICOM, and ask for the altimeter setting if it’s not being broadcast. Approach control won’t say 300 feet theyaircraft-altimeter-2214974’ll say 29.97. The 29.97 translates to a specific column of air above sea level. Your weather meter works very much like an aircraft altimeter.

Take a look at the altimeter on the right. You’ll notice the two small windows at the bottom of the altimeter’s face, the one on the right is pressure in INHg and the one on the left is in milibars. When approach control tells me altimeter at 29.97 they are providing the barometric pressure in INHg. I then rotate the knob in the lower right hand corner and set INHg to 29.97. Now the altimeter will correctly indicate elevation.

P1000299

To arrive at a reasonable altitude reading from your weather meter, you need to set the reference to the barometric pressure for your area.  Don’t expect the meter’s indicated altitude to exactly match that of a topographic map. Even GPS elevation values are often off by as much as 90 meters and more. The reason for the error stems from the fact that GPS receivers calculate position and elevation by measuring time differences between the signals from at least 4 satellites, and any anomaly (terrain, structures, atmospherics, forest canopies, etc.) will influence the position and elevation calculation generating the error.

For ballistic purposes, altitude – better stated as pressure altitude – is not a requirement. What you’ll need is temperature, wind speed, wind angle, station pressure, relative humidity and/or density altitude to arrive at an accurate firing solution.

As customary, we like hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend. Get some range time in with your buds and family!

Bryan Litz On Muzzle Velocity

Bryan Litz is a ballistician for Berger Bullets and Applied Ballistics. Bryan has authored a number of authoritative books on the subject of ballistics. His software, published by Applied Ballistics, can be found on a number of devices including the Kestrel Wind Meters by Nielsen Kellerman. The Applied Ballistics software and smart device app is considered an industry standard used by law enforcement and military units across the world.

Understanding your rifle’s and ammunition muzzle velocity is the most important parameter needed in calculating a firing solution. Establishing accurate muzzle velocity data requires the use of an accurate chronograph. The chronograph should be able to record several strings of ten shots each and calculate the string’s average muzzle velocity and one standard deviation.

What does one standard deviation mean? It means a shooter can expect that 68% of all shots fired will have a muzzle velocity falling within a band that is 10 fps above the average muzzle velocity or 10 fps below the average. The smaller the standard deviation the closer 68% of shots fired will be to the Avg. MV.

These instruments are not inexpensive so most professional grade ballistics applications have a truing function. Truing means determining the muzzle velocity by determining the amount of elevation needed to hit the target center at any range but preferably at the longest range where the projectile is still supersonic. By knowing the precise elevation needed, you can determine average muzzle velocity. I recommend that you true to using three ranges at a minimum. Also keep in mind that muzzle velocity varies with temperature, station pressure and relative humidity so run your truing calculations and several temperatures for best results. It’s a time consuming process but essential for accurate velocity data.

Raytheon’s PIKE 40mm Precision-Guided Munition

pike_40_725

Raytheon Company has just extended the rage of the 40mm grenade launcher out to 2000+ meters. The company has successfully fired 2 PIKE 40mm grenades from the standard M320 Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (EGLM) launcher. Both rounds flew 2,300 meters impacting within the target area. The PIKE weighs less than 2 pounds and is 16.8 inches long.

The PIKE 40mm munition uses a digital semi-active laser seeker to engage both fixed and slow movers. The rocket motor ignites in 10 feet after leaving the tube. Additional Pike upgrades include the ability to fire it from platform-mounted launchers on small boats, all-terrain vehicles and small unmanned aircraft systems.

HONK IF YOU ARE TIRED OF THE DEBATE HOOPLA

We promise to limit political posts to as few as possible, but the upcoming 2016 election has enormous implications for us all, and we are tired of the debate hoopla. Having CNN and FOX, or any network for that matter, supply moderator and debate panels is about as revealing of candidate position as walking through the dark of night. These debates are nothing more than commercial events to drive ratings and advertising revenues. So, we’re proposing the following changes.

  1. No more than two debates per election cycle for each of the parties. This means two debates per party prior to the primaries, then two debates prior to the general election.
  2. Moderator to be chosen from the academic community.
  3. Debate panel should come from the opposing party’s national committee. So if the candidates are Republican, the debate panel should be representatives from the Democratic National Committee.
  4. Cost of the debates should be absorbed by the parties and  licensed to all networks.

Station Pressure vs. Barometric Pressure

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. This week we thought it would be productive to discuss the weather. More specifically station pressure vs. barometric pressure. For precision shooters; particularly long range shooters (i.e. 800 meters and beyond), understanding the influence of environmentals in determining a firing solution is critical to making the shot. As a long range shooter you have two problems to solve; Aerodynamics, which influence elevation adjustments and the wind vector which influences the bullets flight path over the ground.

For some reason, or another, pressure gives people a hard time and if you don’t get pressure right you probably won’t make a long range shot – excluding the effects of wind. But, before jumping into pressure, which can be easily addressed in a paragraph or two, I’d like to talk about density altitude.

The simplest way to view density altitude is as the net effect of three discrete environmental variables: air temperature, station pressure, and dew point. If you found yourself at one end of a tunnel and was asked to run to the other end, but you had to do it by running through wet towels hanging from ceiling to floor you would encounter a significant amount of drag; hence, your speed would go down and you’d use more energy in running the length of the tunnel. If I then remove some of those wet towels (the equivalent of increasing density altitude), you’d experience less drag; hence, increased speed and use a little less energy. This is precisely what a projectile experiences as it moves through the atmosphere. Those of you that fly know that true airspeed (as opposed to indicated airspeed) increases as density altitude increases.

Density altitude is a calculated value not measured. Here’s a little horse to help you get a feel for what is happening with density altitude. When temperature rises DA increases; when it decreases DA decreases. When station pressure increases DA decreases; when it decreases DA increases. When dew point increases DA increases; when it decreases DA decreases. This is just a rule of thumb to keep in the back of your mind; however, all of these parameters interact.

In long range shooting, your projectile will perform differently at various density altitudes and since station pressure is a component used in calculating density altitude if your station pressure measurement is wrong your firing solution will be wrong. It may not be a huge error at 100 meters but it’ll be large when you get out to 800+ meters.

Station Pressure is nothing more than air pressure at any point on the earth, meaning that it is not corrected for terrain elevation. To measure pressure you need a weather meter and Kestrel is by far the industry standard – period. To arrive at station pressure using the Kestrel meter simply go to the BARO page and set your reference to zero. Setting the reference to zero removes the sea level reference from the pressure measurement resulting in station pressure.

Barometric Pressure is the air pressure reported by a weatherman or NOAA weather broadcast. It is adjusted for sea level. To measure the barometric pressure with your Kestrel, you need to know your current elevation, and the best way to do that is with a topographic map. It is by far more accurate than your GPS altitude. If you’re out in the weeds with just a GPS shame on you. Always have a topographic map of the area you’re hiking or hunting.

P1000295P1000296

The picture on the left shows station pressure. Note that I’ve set the reference to 0. The picture of the right indicates barometric pressure. Note that the reference is set to my topographic elevation.

Before leaving the subject and whishing you a safe and relaxing weekend, I want to make sure that I leave you with one last thought.

Most ballistic calculators provide you with an option to use density altitude or discrete atmospheric data for its environmental inputs. When they ask for pressure, they’re asking for station pressure not barometric pressure. Concurrent with that input, they will also ask for altitude / elevation which can be done using your topographic map. When I say “most”please do not interpret my generality as “all.” So, know your ballistic calculator – train with it and use it regularly. For those of you that don’t have a standalone ballistic calculator running on a smart device or PDA, Kestrel makes a meter that includes ballistic software from Horus Vision and Applied Ballistics.

Next week our shoot-the-shit  topic will take you through setting up the ALT (altitude page). It’s not obvious and merits some discussion so that you understand the reading and how it’s derived.

All shoot-the-shit rules apply so let us know what you think!

Have a great weekend, get out to the range and have some fun with your buds and family.

It’s been a while since we’ve done an edged weapon review so we wanted it to be something on the formidable side. To do that, we selected Cold Steel’s Tactical Katana Machete. This 24 inch blade is formidable but very nicely balanced with a great sweep along the edge worthy of its Katana heritage.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. H.R. 3590 Protection of Second Amendment Rights

Recently, we were made aware that some physicians, in the State of Florida, are asking patients to disclose whether they had a firearm at home.

P1000262

Image redacted to protect patient privacy

This prompted a research effort on our part to see if collecting information on firearm possession and/or ownership was a requirement resulting from passage of H.R. 3590. Our findings suggest the opposite is true.

Second  Amendment Protections are stipulated in SEC. 2716. PROHIBITION ON DISCRIMINATION IN FAVOR OF HIGHLY COMPENSATED INDIVIDUALS –

(c) PROTECTION OF SECOND AMENDMENT GUN RIGHTS. You can find its text starting at H. R. 3590—766 through H. R. 3590—767  (p 766 – 767 of the Bill) I’ve included the text below for our readers convenience.

‘‘(c) PROTECTION OF SECOND AMENDMENT GUN RIGHTS.—

‘‘(1) WELLNESS AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS.—A wellness

and health promotion activity implemented under subsection

(a)(1)(D) may not require the disclosure or collection of any

information relating to—

‘‘(A) the presence or storage of a lawfully-possessed

firearm or ammunition in the residence or on the property

of an individual; or

H. R. 3590—767

‘‘(B) the lawful use, possession, or storage of a firearm

or ammunition by an individual.

‘‘(2) LIMITATION ON DATA COLLECTION.—None of the

authorities provided to the Secretary under the Patient Protection

and Affordable Care Act or an amendment made by that

Act shall be construed to authorize or may be used for the

collection of any information relating to—

‘‘(A) the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm

or ammunition;

‘‘(B) the lawful use of a firearm or ammunition; or

‘‘(C) the lawful storage of a firearm or ammunition.

‘‘(3) LIMITATION ON DATABASES OR DATA BANKS.—None of

the authorities provided to the Secretary under the Patient

Protection and Affordable Care Act or an amendment made

by that Act shall be construed to authorize or may be used

to maintain records of individual ownership or possession of

a firearm or ammunition.

‘‘(4) LIMITATION ON DETERMINATION OF PREMIUM RATES OR

ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH INSURANCE.—A premium rate may not

be increased, health insurance coverage may not be denied,

and a discount, rebate, or reward offered for participation in

a wellness program may not be reduced or withheld under

any health benefit plan issued pursuant to or in accordance

with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or an

amendment made by that Act on the basis of, or on reliance

upon—

‘‘(A) the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm

or ammunition; or

‘‘(B) the lawful use or storage of a firearm or ammunition.

‘‘(5) LIMITATION ON DATA COLLECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR

INDIVIDUALS.—No individual shall be required to disclose any

information under any data collection activity authorized under

the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or an amendment

What Do The Russians Want With Syria ?

The weekend is here and it’s time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. New readers note that with any shoot-the-shit you can make unsupported assertions, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether, all of which is free of charge. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Folks, there are so many cluster fucks unraveling domestically and around the world that it was damned near impossible to select a topic. Our first thought was to shoot-the-shit about Layne Bryant’s Cacique’ line of intimate apparel for the full figured woman but gave up on that. However, the Russian participation in Syria seems to be getting a great deal of bandwidth. So, we decided to take our shot at it.

This situation is not a ball game where each side cheers for their team. This is a global issue with the potential for profound ramifications and you can’t solve problems without looking at all aspects of the problem. Having said that, let’s identify the catalysts

  1. We blew the Ukraine. We were backing the Ukrainian coupe with financing, PR etc. etc. Vladimir Putin knew that and since the Ukraine is vital to Russia’s  oil exports, Putin was not about to let that happen any time soon. We then spanked Russia by imposing sanctions.
  2. We entered into an agreement with Iran that will release $150 billion dollars of frozen assets and lifted sanctions in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapon ambitions. Even as the terms were being worked out, Gen Soleimani was hitting Moskva trance houses, sipping Grey Goose and shopping for Russian advanced weapon systems.
  3. Shia controlled Iraq under Nouri Kamil Mohammed Hasan al-Maliki, alienated every Sunni in the country and Iraqi military. He essentially created the petri dish giving rise to a merger between Baathist Sunnis and radical elements of AQAP rebranded as ISIL. That organization expanded alliances with elements operating in Syria. The objective is to eliminate Shia influence in Iraq and depose Bashar al-Assad who is an Alawait.
  4. We were way too cautious in supporting anti al-Assad rebels in the early stages of the civil war.

Like most conflicts, there is a huge economic component to the Russian calculus. Russians have three large customers at stake: Iran, Iraq and Syria. Less significant is Lebanon, Palestine and Libya. Should Syria fall to either ISIL or moderate Sunni elements, Russia would loss some vitally important resources. First, the Russian Black Sea Fleet is completely surrounded by NATO member countries and Russia would potentially loose access to the Bosphorus Straights; thereby, the Mediterranean.  So Russia needs a friendly sea port on the Mediterranean which it gets from Syria. A Russian friendly Syria creates a land route for Russian products, military equipment, etc. to Syria, Iraq, Iran and other points in the Middle East. This access is worth billions of dollars to the Russian economy.

It is highly unlikely that Vladimir Putin sees himself sunbathing in Speedos with al-Assad  while sipping a little Arak. However, it’s easy to see what is driving Russian actions in Syria. Russia’s risk is that their actions will consolidate ISIL and moderate Sunni factions. This is going to be one to watch…

Have a great weekend readers. If you’re on the East Coast stay out of the rain. If the sun is shinning where you are get to the range or do something with your buds and family!

The contract was secured in May of this year and Bergara began the process of designing and building the custom rifles based on the Cobb County S.W.A.T. unit’s requirements.

Office of Personnel Management Hack Worse Than Originally Thought

The recent hack of the Office of Personnel Management is far worse than originally thought. Many of our readers have a credible risk of exposure and unfortunately the picture is worse than initially reported. OPM officials have recently updated their initial assessment of 1.1 million fingerprints exposed to 5.6 million, a fivefold increase. The hack compromised social security numbers, BI files and complete personnel files.

Finger prints are problematic in that they’re biometric data. You can change passwords, request new account numbers and subscribe to credit monitoring and protection, but biometric data is a very different story. Finger prints are used to access physical facilities, they are used in generating encryption keys and even provide fast track logins to secure systems. Furthermore, since they are part of a file that is connected to college transcripts, birth certificates, passports and other official documents they uniquely link to the individuals identity.

If you’ve been impacted by, or think you’ve been impacted,  by the OPM hack, I advise you to contact the OPM to determine the extent of your exposure and evaluate options to mitigate your risks.
