L3 EOTech AND THE USSOCOM SAFETY OF USE MESSAGE

There’s a lot hubbub surrounding the September 2015 USSOCOM Safety of Use Message  identifying L3-EOTech Enhanced Combat Optical Sights (ECOS) SU- 231/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-533-0941, SU-231A/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-587-9345, SU-231D/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-591-7601, SU-253/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-566-2844, and SU-264/PEQ, NSN: 1240-01-590-7763.

One of the problems that I have with breaking this news is that it leads readers to conclusions that are simply not support by facts, and I’ll get to the SEC filling shortly.

From reading the Safety of Use Message, the problems appear to have been associated with the SU-231 and SU-231A. NSW Crane, out of an abundance of caution, communicated their findings to the SOF community and requested caution across the entire ECOS inventory. There was no disclosure of test protocols and sample sizes so there’s no way to draw a reasonable conclusion  about the overall impact.

The elimination of temperature range performance in the owners manual is not a nefarious act. It is a responsible action taken by a responsible company to eliminate any impressions of misrepresentation. This action appears to have been taken within a reasonable time of the company becoming aware of the problem. So, I wouldn’t view that as a confession or anything other than a responsible action. All that aside, a company is legally allowed to change specifications without providing notice.

With regards to the SEC filling, and you wouldn’t know this unless you’ve actually filed 10Ks and 10Qs,  the SEC, FASB and GAAP requires that any exposure to current or future operations must be disclosed. In all cases, the exposure is presented in the worst possible light. This is done in the interest of a principal called Conservatism. SEC attorneys  excel at finding the most damning language possible to avoid stockholder lawsuits or SEC enforcement actions. L3 Communications has annual gross revenues in the $12 billion to $13 billion range. Hence a $23 million exposure, although material from financial reporting standards, represents postage money! Also keep in mind that the $23 million exposure is under the worst possible conditions. The actual exposure may be substantially less.

All of this is to say that as members of the broadcast media we should probably stop drawing conclusions that are simply unsupported. Please tells us about the deficiencies encountered, but please don’t paint images that are simply unwarranted.  L3 EOTech doesn’t deserve that – it’s like the HK extravaganza not too long ago.

There’s simply nothing nefarious going on with L3 EOTech and the company is addressing the problem responsibly.

EVOLUTIONAL CHANGES IN GOOGLE’S ANDROID – ARE THEY FOR YOU?

Nearly all of our readers use a smart device for field use to include ballistics computation and navigation. If you fit that mold, it’s important for you to know that changes in the Android operating system may not support the Apps that you’ve come to know and trust, so don’t get rid of that older device before you ask all of the right questions.

For example, beginning with Android 4.4, Google has removed an app’s write privileges to your external SD card. The implications are insidious and not understood by sales people or the consumers. So, here’s what it means.

Removing write app privileges  to the external SD card means that all app data has to be stored in device memory which is undesirable for several reasons. First, it uses more of your internal device memory potentially impacting performance (it’s bad enough that you can’t delete 90% of the crap they install on the device).

Second, if you need to uninstall and reinstall the App, you can kiss app data, that you’ve painstakingly been collecting for years, goodbye! This forces you to use a cloud service to backup your data, and of course Google would prefer you use theirs. It’s a pretty underhanded way of generating incremental revenues by forcing your hand. Remember you paid for this smart device!

Another issue you need to be aware of is the elimination of magnetometers and accelerometers in devices running Android 4.4 and higher. Elimination of these sensors due to Android constraints will prevent you from using compass apps or any navigation application that supplies magnetic bearings or needs magnetic information. One example is a ballistic application that needs direction of fire. No magnetometer means no azimuth data.

If you have something that is working well for you now, don’t upgrade because you may obsolete yourself out of business. You’re much better off keeping your older phone and tablet.

WHAT MAGNIFICATION IS BEST FOR THE AK’s 7.62 x 39

Here we are once more, one week closer to Black Friday, Christmas and New Year’s. It’s also a Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit.

This week’s topic was going to be “How to identify a moron,” the last minute one of our less sophisticated readers suggested “Why I’m not the 40% of men with erectile dysfunction” – I assume in response to the recent  blast of Viagra commercials. Thank God, last minute, we got a question from a reader wanting some guidance on the proper level of magnification to use with an AK, so we thank him for that. As with all shoot-the-shits, you are free to make any unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject back to Viagra. You are free to do so without censure.

Here’s our take on magnified optics for the AK platform. The 7.62 x 39 cartridge was developed for barrier penetration and small enough were a large amount could be carried. Its external ballistics and bullet geometry were never intended for precision work – by precision we mean 1 MOA or less. That’s the reason why I like the supersonic 300 Blackout.

For a variety of reasons, the best you can consistently expect from your AK, operated by an experience shooter, is 3 MOA. Weapon tolerances and ammunition are simply not intended for precision work. If precision is your goal from Eastern European weapon systems we would suggest the SVD or similar platform. So, the objective for a magnified optic becomes a need to get a better view of what you are shooting at, and for that we suggest magnifications that give you a good field of view at ranges in the order of 300 meters to 600 meters and that you can do with a 4x to 6x. This may seem like a narrow range but you’d be amazed at how much influence these magnification levels have on field of view at typical effective ranges. You may also want to consider a Dragunov style optic. Ranging with a Dragunov reticle is extremely fast and surprisingly accurate.

Let us know what you think!

Have a safe and relaxing weekend with your buds and family. Get to the range and keep your skills current

SIG IS NOW SHIPPING THE P225 A1

The SIG P225 was, for a long time, a stable for the German Police and other law enforcement agencies. The single stack 9 mm compact frame pistol performed extremely well with superb accuracy and reliability. . German Police discontinued its use in 1996 and went out of production shortly thereafter.

AT SHOT SHOW 2015, SIG indicated they were bringing back the P225 with a significant number of upgrades driving the A1 designation. The P225 lacked a good finish, that was changed in the A1. DA trigger pull for the P225 was in the order of 12lbs., that was decreased to 10 lbs. in the A1. In SA SIG kept the 4.4lbs of the original P225.

I can’t speak highly enough on the P225 and from all indications the P225 A1 will prove itself to be a highly successful offering.

Tom Bender Van Nuys’ Blade Smith

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A little over a year ago, I had the opportunity to review one of Tom Bender’s blades, which you can read here.

Tom is an amazing Connecticut Yankee now living in Van Nuys, CA. There’s probably not an action film worth watching where Tom has not had a hand in both its armament and explosions. The man has more Federal and ATF licenses than anyone I’ve ever know; if that’s not enough for you, he’s also an accomplished blade smith.

The picture above is of a knife he made for Roque  Wincker, Co-founder and Senior Vice President of Global Operations at C-T Watch, Inc. ( COUNTER-TERRORISM WATCH, INCORPORATED,) Los Angeles, CA.

Mr Wicker is actively engaged in all aspects of Global operations as well as delivering the strategic vision of C-T Watch, Inc. With an extreme emphasis on quality services and people, Mr. Wicker strives for 110% customer satisfaction & employee satisfaction. Mr. Wicker is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and has worked with the Naval Special Warfare Community, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), and VSW (Very Shallow Mine Countermeasures Detachment) and has consulted with Specialized Diving Communities within the Federal government and state agencies.

Prior to starting up C-T Watch, Mr. Wicker came from healthcare contracting and management where he was actively involved with management contract retention, hospital financial auditing, facility start-up, program management, and regional operations. He started his healthcare career at UCLA then transferred to a national management company owned by a global private equity firm (Jordan Industries). Mr. Wicker moved up to Regional Vice President in less than 3 years. Mr. Wicker is a member of the (AFIO) Association of Former Intelligence Officers, Honorary member of the National Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association of (NATEODA), Associate member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), Member of National Academy of Police Divers (NAPD) and sits on several City Boards in the Los Angeles area.

I’ll sum up Tom’s goal for knife making by expressing his view  – “a desire to produce a tool that’s not fancy but will punch through a ribcage” He meets that objective in Roque’s knife and it will undoubtedly serve him well.

Building A Credible Sniper System

We regularly see questions asking for recommendations on things like; what’s the best scope to get, the best reticle, best bipod, best rifle or best ammo. We try to steer our readers to view their equipment as a system and not discrete components. So, for this week’s shoot–the-shit topic we’ll go through our thought process. Please feel free to make any unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone or change the subject altogether. You’ll experience no subliminal messaging or a bill from us.

The economics of building a high performance system are not trivial; a sniper system, like the Remington shown in the picture above, can run the buyer  well over $20,000, and that does not include thermal or image intensified optics. You can reasonably expect the numbers to breakdown something like this; $5,000 – $8,000 for the rifle, $ 2,000 – $4,000 for the optics, another $500 – $1,000 for bases and optic mounts, extra magazines will run you $60 – $200 each depending on the rifle, muzzle devices (unsuppressed) $150 – $350, suppressor $ 1,000 – $2,000 depending on material, mounting arrangement and caliber, and lastly about $500 for all the miscellaneous items like slings cases etc. No matter how you slice it a very expensive proposition, even on a DoD budget. Unfortunately, if you take the discrete component approach, you can end up spending a lot of cash for a system that doesn’t perform as well as a less expensive arrangement that was built as a system.

Using a systems approach requires first and foremost that you clearly define your objectives. Once you’ve decided what your system needs to do, you’ll want to define how well it needs to do it keeping diminishing returns in mind. Once that’s done you can design your platform by examining how the various discrete components interact, but before you run out and plunk down a bunch of cash have it all penciled and researched. Failing to do that guarantees that you’ll spend more than you have to and not achieve your desired objective.

Not long ago, I ran across an individual with a custom built .308 rifles, top of the line mounting hardware; all topped off by a Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25×56. The shooter could not hold a minute of angle out to 300 yards. Some of it was his shooting, but the real problem was operating the scope at its highest magnification which amplified the effects of mirage. I don’t know what this individual’s objectives were but it was clear to me he didn’t plan before building his system. By over-scoping his rifle, he effectively reduced his field of view at lower magnifications as well as the higher magnification levels; making tracking a moving target much more difficult. When you consider the effective range of the .308 caliber it’s easy to see that his optic selection was misguided. So, to make a long story short, not matching his caliber to his optics resulted in poor overall performance.

This is our thought process on the subject. We think it’s a good way to maximize your return on investment and the level of satisfaction you derive from that investment.

Send us your comments / questions. Have a great Halloween weekend. Be safe; get out to the range with your buds and family!

https___gallery.mailchimp.com_6365e79443464fd18ec58030d_images_99c8645a-7c2c-43a7-b94c-c640e765eea2

(Houston, TX) – Battle Rifle Company will introduce their latest addition: the BR4 Trident at the 2015 NASGW show.
The BR4 Trident is the first rifle specifically designed for MARSEC (Maritime Security) operations and shipboard usage. Built and constructed for long lasting life in extreme weather conditions, the BR4 Trident is unlike any other rifle and suited perfectly for marine environments.
Available with an 11.5″ or 16″ barrel, all major components of the BR4 Trident have a Hi-Temp Cerakote finish including the upper and lower receivers, buffer tube, forearm quad-rail and the front sight base. The rifle includes a 416S Stainless Steel Hi-Temp Cerakote finished Cryogenically treated barrel with a 1:7 twist, and also comes with a stainless steel fire control group, nickel boron M16 profile bolt carrier group, stainless steel pins and lower parts, stainless steel springs and a narrow comfort grip quad rail. All the components are coated with Nano Technology to insure a water tight seal that prevents corrosion and rust due to wet environmental conditions.

“Careful consideration was given that no direct ferrous metal to metal contact was made throughout the entire rifle,” says Noah Maudalin, Battle Rifle Company Master Gunsmith. “The rifle comes in Semi and select fire models; needless to say, we are all super excited to introduce this to marine security divisions as well as the general public.”

Surviving A Hand-To-Hand Encounter

While perusing a publication, we ran across an article that attracted our attention. Before jumping to any conclusions,  we know the training depicted is conducted by a highly reputable and competent individual, so this is in no way a criticism of the training and/or trainer. Having said that, our opinion on hand-to-hand  is that surviving an encounter requires the observance of some basic rules.

  1. Hand-to- hand engagements are a pain in the ass. They are not a measure of manhood and if it were to be discovered that you got into a hand-to-hand engagement, applications to yacht clubs, country clubs or Upper East Side Commons would be immediately declined. Hand-to-hand engagements occur because you failed to lanyard your pistol and carry a knife.
  2. It’s quite likely that your assailant is not wearing a plate carrier with 20 pounds of gear attached. Hence, your assailant has a great grip on you.
  3. If the assailant is pulling on you do not try to pull away. Walk right into the guy and if you can get into his skives do so.
  4. If the assailant is pushing on you, do not stand there and resist the guy. Walk right back with the guy.
  5. The next rules require the use of the two pictures below…

20151005_18024720151005_180232-1

6. An assailant that is holding on to you with both hands is unlikely to be holding a gun or knife to use against you.

7. If you are holding on to your assailant you have no way to use your knife or gun.

8. Keep cool and thinking the fight will always go to the individual that is thinking.

Setting Eunit And Wunit Parameters In Kestrel’s AB Weather Meters

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. We hope the Force has been with you throughout the week. Today, we’d like to shed some light on a topic that requires a bit of illumination – How to properly setup Elevation units(Eunit) and Wind units (Wunit) in the Applied Ballistics Kestrel meter. It’s not intuitive.

When initially setting up a gun in the AB software, the user is required to enter a number of parameters like muzzle velocity, bullet weight and SH (sight height). The user is also asked for Eunit (elevation unit) and Wunit (wind unit). Here the user is given a choice of mil, tmoa (true minute of angle), smoa (shooter’s minute of angle) or click. It’s very simple at this point to assume that you are being asked how your elevation and wind turrets are calibrated, which is not correct.

When you select the Eunit what you’re actually doing is selecting how the firing solution is displayed. For example if one lets Eunit = tmoa  Eclick defaults to N/A and there’s no way to define the Eclick (elevation click value) the same holds true for Wunit. The latter holds true if you set Eunit and Wunit to mil or smoa, the corresponding Eclick and Wclick value will be N/A. In all three scenarios, your ballistic firing solution will display Elevation and Wind values in Mils, TMOA or SMOA.

It is only when you select Eunit = click and/or Wunit = click that you are allowed to define the click value and here is how you do that.

Example 1

To set Eunit or Wunit for clicks proceed as follows.

Set Eunit = click  – move down to Eclick – Press Enter – now adjust to match the elevation turret’s calibration (per tmoa, per smoa or per mil) – select a value, for example “per tmoa” – Now Exit to get back to Eclick – Lastly, using the adjust arrows select the appropriate click value, for example 2/tmoa.

Your display will look like this…

  • Eunit     click
  • Eclick   2/tmoa

Example 2

The shooter wants to use holdover or under for elevation but wants to dial in wind. This is the appropriate setup for that configuration.

Eunit = mil Eclick = n/a

Wunit = click Eclick = 10/mil

Example 3

The shooter wants to dial elevation and hold for wind, but he has an optic reticle that is calibrated in MOA.

Eunit = click  Eclick = 2/tmoa

Wunit = tmoa   Wclick = n/a

When you look at the ballistic solution, the elevation parameter represents clicks and the wind parameter will be the hold in tmoa.

This is a feature that allows the AB application to adapt to a wide range of reticles and shooter preferences. If you are shooting with a reticle that provides no ranging information, for example a duplex reticle set Eunit = click and Wunit =click.

As customary, all shoot-the shit rules apply so let us hear from you.

Have a great weekend readers, be safe and spend some quality time with your buds and family!
