SOFIC 2016 – STEINER AN/PVS-21 LOW PROFILE NVG

DSC_0976

The AN/PVS-21 is a Low Profile Night Vision Goggle that utilizes sensor fusion technology to move the image intensifier tubes out of line with the optics, which allows the width of the unit to be significantly shorter than most other NVG’s, accounting for 3-4” less protrusion from the operator’s face.

The AN/PVS-21 also uses a patented “folded optics” system that projects the night vision image into a pair of see-through optics similar to a HUD.  This means that the operator can literally see through the lenses regardless whether the unit is engaged.  See through optics add a whole new level of versatility. The tube no longer controls image brightness; if an operator is exposed to too much ambient light, the HUD image fades allowing the actual scene to be viewed through the lenses.

The AN/PVS-21 comes with a specially-developed, Patent Pending Refocus Ring that snaps over one of the objective lenses.  The lens can flip up out of the way or be flipped down in front of the objective.  This revolutionary little device will instantly refocus the objective lens to a close-in distance.  The operator does not need to refocus the actual objective lens because this innovative lens does it instantly.  The Refocus Lens focuses the view to within 18-24” and is extremely useful for quick radio checks, map/compass reads, weapon remedial action, emergency medical, etc.  One of the most interesting abilities of the Refocus Lens is that it allows the operator to engage threats with a pistol’s iron sights.  That right: accurate threat engagement with a pistol’s iron sights.  The Refocus Lens goes over the shooter’s dominant eye objective lens, while the non-dominant stays focused at the standard range.  The brain melds these two images, allowing the operator to focus on the front sight of the pistol and the distant threat- just like normal.  This takes some training to master, but the bottom line is that it is possible!

PARASIM TRAINER SOFIC 2016

DSC_0962STI’s Parasim is a virtual reality parachute training system currently in use across the U.S. military. The company has been a great supporter and longtime exhibitor at SOFIC .

STI is two synergistic businesses:

Engineering services: Consulting in design, control, modeling, analysis, testing, requirements definition and systems identification. Clients with internal engineering teams outsource to STI to solve difficult dynamics and control problems. The company performs early stage audits to prevent costly issues later. Their government handling qualities and flight control requirements expertise (from NASA to the FAA) is a key asset.

Simulation products and platforms: Years of engineering consulting and R&D successes have laid the foundation for STI’s own simulation products, which increase effectiveness while reducing cost in areas like training and human performance assessment. PARASIM has been the global standard for parachute training for 15 years. STISIM Drive redefined the driving simulator, giving it a broader role from occupational therapy to clinical studies to fleet training. Fused Reality is a technology platform that enables the next generation of virtual and augmented reality. The company also develop specialized analytical software.

parasim3

Their PARASIM exhibit has to be one of the more popular spots for conference attendees. Where else can you brush up your HALO jump skills or experience them for the first time. PARASIM can duplicate specific Areas of Operation (AO) to rehearse operators in an accurate and controlled environment.  PARASIM has been the standard for aircrew and paratrooper training for nearly 20 years, with nearly over 300 systems sold worldwide. PARASIM is used now by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines for premeditated airborne operations and emergency egress training. It has also been used by military forces around the world for over 10 years, with a continually growing global presence. PARASIM is being continuously updated and improved, with recent expansion into mission planning, combination jumping, and free fall maneuvering applications.

Just When You Thought Darwin’s Natural Selection Works

As we roll into Memorial Day, a national holiday to honor our fallen brothers and sisters, miscreants in Venice, CA desecrated the Vietnam War Memorial located on Pacific Ave and Sunset Court. The Memorial lists the names of the many M.I.A. More interesting is that L.A. Police has no active investigation underway to apprehend those responsible. There’s a large number of Vietnam Veterans that make Southern California their home it’d be nice to see them take care of the matter.

ISOF CAPABILITIES DEMONSTRATION SOFIC 2016

The SOFIC 2016 International Special Operation Forces (ISOF) Capabilities Demonstration is one of the many highlights of this year’s SOFIC conference held annually in The City of Tampa. The ISOF Demonstration is conducted every other year and draws huge crowds from the Special Operations community and their industry partners.

In this year’s demonstration, Tampa’s  mayor, Bob Buckhorn is taken by a terrorist organization and held aboard a large yacht at anchor between Tampa General Hospital and Tampa’s Convention Center. Fearing a response, the terrorist organization moves the mayor off the yacht to a hut on shore. ISOF springs into action by inserting two SEALS who will swim on close circuit breathing apparatus and clear the dock area in preparation for a boat assault. Two MD 530 Little Bird will insert snipers on the roof tops of the Tampa Convention Center and Tampa General Hospital. Two MH60 Blackhawks enter the area; one deploys combat swimmers who will board the vessel, the second will insert a boarding party by fast rope. Upon clearing the yacht they discovered that the mayor was moved to shore. A waterborne assault is ordered using two rigid hull inflatable craft. Tremendous gun fire ensues, the mayor is located by the assault team and secured. A squad HALOs in to the AO and land in the water. All units prepare to EXFIL the area along with the combat swimmers by SPIES.

We hope you enjoy the slide show and feel free to let us know what you think…

SOFIC 2016 – INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO THE COMMERCIAL sUAS THREAT

DSC_0998

The proliferation of hobby and commercial sUAS represents a significant threat to commercial aviation and domestic critical infrastructure. DHS, FAA and DOD are the principal drivers behind the recent Draconian restrictions placed on commercial and hobby sUAS flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now requires every drone, R/C (radio controlled) aircraft operator to register before flying drones, aircraft (sUAS) weighing over .55lbs (just over 2 sticks of butter) and must have a compliant label for identification and carry Certificate of Registration (Flight ID). Anyone who owns a small unmanned aircraft (sUAS), Drone, RC Model Aircraft of a certain weight must register with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry before they fly outdoors. People who previously operated their UAS must also register before their next flight. You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register and do not register, including fines of up to $250,000.

In addition to the obvious concerns over aviation safety, sUAS  pose a very real terrorism threat as they can be used to deliver biological agents, explosives and other devices. Individuals can be readily targeted using a small unmanned aerial vehicle. Fortunately, most of the sUAS incidents to date have been nothing more than vulgar displays of their owner’s stupidity. However, the potential for a much more insidious application is there and industry is responding with some very interesting technology.

Batelle, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, has introduced the Drone Defender to help security and law enforcement personnel deal with those pesky sUAS intrusions. The Drone Defender selectively attacks two sUAS systems, the radio control channel and the GPS signal. The active electronic elements are mounted on an M4 / AR15 platform, the longer antenna is the r.f jammer while the shorter lower antenna steps on the GPS signal. The system projects a 30 degree r.f. beam, with a 400 yard range,  that attacks the sUAS radio control channel. The r.f. signal transmitted by the Drone Defender steps on the radio control frequency essentially decreasing the drone’s receiver signal-to-noise ration such that the sUAS receiver can no longer discern its control signal. At that point, depending on how the drone is programmed, one of three things will happen. The drone will return home, slowly return to the ground or hover. If the GPS signal is attacked, the drone will lose its GPS reference and could be forced to the ground for confiscation and / or forensic analysis.

There are presently 10 Drone Defenders in use with DHS and DOD but the company hopes those numbers will increase as the technology is proven and accepted.

GLOBAL WARMING AND THE FLAT TAX

It’s Friday and time for another shoot-the-shit topic. Shoot-the-shit topics are not always in keeping with this Blog’s genre. We recognize that you’ve had a long and hard week, so during our shoot-the-shits we provide you with interesting topics, the ability to make any unsupported statement, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject all together.

We’re getting very tired of a mainstream media that does nothing more than report on what our 2016 political candidates say on Twitter or Facebook. In last week’s shoot-the-shit we talked to you about NAFTA and what effects it’s had on regional trade since its implementation in 1994. If you’ve read it, you are now equipped to avoid getting snowed. This week we’d like to talk about global warming and the flat tax. I’ll start with Global Warming / Climate Change.

I’m not presenting a scientific treatise on the subject because it’s a toga party subject where “intellectuals” sit around speaking with multisyllabic words while their stretch limousines sit around waiting to pick them up. I’m going to present something very basic, a thought process. You can accept it, reject it or critique it, it’s simply a thought process.

The earth is a 4.6 billion year old ecosystem that has been undergoing climate change since its inception. We know this from our own Great Lakes, which were formed about 20,000 years ago when the earth’s climate warmed and the last glacial continental ice sheet retreated.  Let’s examine one more example, the Sahara Desert which began to be formed with the shrinkage of the Tethys – a giant ocean that was the origin of the modern Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas – a process that began 7 million – 4 million years ago. So, let’s agree that climate change has been occurring since the earth developed an atmosphere. All this occurred loooooong before man started using fossil fuels or driving Chevies. Any attempt to forecast doom and gloom from 100 years of data suggesting global warming and subsequent climate change is equivalent to forecasting your health with only seconds worth of medical data.

The earth’s surface is 75% water and as surface temperatures increase water evaporates and rises in the atmosphere, where it cools, condenses and becomes rain which has a cooling effect so it’s a self-regulating mechanism. There are other bio regulators at play also. However, as long as we have an atmosphere we are in reasonably good shape.

Our real challenge is the growing global population, which is currently at 7.3 billion people, all of who need clean breathable air, clean drinkable water, nutrition that provides a minimum of 2,000 to 3,000 calories per day and a source of unlimited and inexpensive power to drive global development.

Earlier I said the earth’s surface is 75% water so 25% is land. The total land surface area of Earth is about 57,308,738 square miles, of which about 33% is desert and about 24% is mountainous and generally considered uninhabitable. Subtracting this uninhabitable 57% (32,665,981 mi2) from the total land area leaves 24,642,757 square miles or 15.77 billion acres of habitable land. Of this habitable land approximately 50% is being used for farming and grazing. Our future challenge is how to increase food output from a limited land supply, how to reclaim uninhabitable land and how to manage the need for increase population density. Meeting all of these challenges, requires abundant and inexpensive energy sources and shutting down coal production and fossil fuel powered plants stands as a monument to stupidity. Driving up energy costs on a domestic and global scale to mitigate climate change and promote renewable sources is a colossal error in judgment.

A comparison of how much land would be needed to produce 1,800 Megawatts of solar or wind energy compared to the amount of land needed to produce 1,800 Megawatts by a nuclear plant

Solar Power

  • Power Output: 1 Megawatt per 7.4 acres of photovoltaic solar panels.
  • Land Use: 13,320 acres (21 square miles)

Wind Power

  • Power Output: Above Average Wind Turbine Generates 2.5 Megawatts/turbine
  • Land Use: 108,000 acres (169 square miles)

Nuclear Power

  • Power Output: ~1,800 Megawatts ( 2 reactors)
  • Land Use: 1,100 acres1 (1.7 square miles)

Knowing that global population is increasing and that habitable land is limited, what power source and supporting technologies would you invest in?

Take the global warming and climate change argument with a very large grain of salt, but recognize that the pressing need is accommodating an increasing global population in a very limited supply of habitable and farmable land.

The Flat Tax

Let me dispel the notion that Presidents are responsible for economies. The only thing a President has direct control of is the regulatory environment via his or her agencies. They can also influence fiscal policy but it is Congress that levies taxes. Economies work where there is an abundance of liquidity (monetary policy) and where the markets are allowed to freely interact creating demand and supply. Economies are consumption driven through consumer demand and capital investments on the part of business.

The flat tax has the appeal of a glazed doughnut. It’s simple and intuitive, and from an economist’s view it makes sense. A flat tax would do away with all business and individual deductions; for example, the homeowner deduction would disappear. Because the deduction is a subsidy, home prices of existing and new homes would drop. But, a flat tax is pie in the sky and here’s why.

One of the most powerful tools government has to influence behavior is through tax law. For example, if government wants to see a 50 m.p.g. vehicle it offers the buyer a large tax credit and through tax law they incentivize individuals or businesses to move in a specific direction. This works in both ways for example smoking. Government wants you to stop smoking, so how do they do it? They keep increasing the price per pack by adding or increasing taxes. A flat tax at the federal or local level greatly limits a lawmaker’s ability to influence, one way or the other, individuals and businesses. This is something they’re not likely to be willing to give up.

There are thousands of law firms across the United States who’s primary business is tax law. They would be pushed out of business.

There are thousands of C.P.A. firms across America that look to tax season in order to make their annual revenue targets. They too would be pushed out of business.

Large publicly traded corporations have spent billions of dollars lobbying for sector specific tax credits or deductions. As a result, they have effective tax brackets lower than most individuals and in many cases paying $0 taxes and in several cases the ability to carry tax losses forward to other tax years. A flat tax would eliminate those deductions resulting in a much higher effective tax bracket for these companies. They’re not going to get behind a flat tax.

So if you’re a candidate for office pledging a flat tax, the media should be asking you how do you get a flat tax passed? Give Facebook and Twitter a break media and drill down on candidate positions.

Hope you’ve enjoyed our shoot-the-shit. Have a great weekend, be safe and spend quality time with your buds and family.

NAFTA WAS IT GOOD FOR AMERICA?

The 2016 elections will influence our country’s future in profound ways and they could also have significant consequences for the firearms and ammunition industry, which on the aggregate contributes $50 billion per year to the economy and supports some 288,000 jobs.

The American electorate can no longer rely and the majority of the media to educate and enlighten its viewers and readers by confronting candidates; pressing them to substantiate their positions with relevant details. Instead we ask candidates if they were bullied when they were in high school. So. we’ve decided to use our weekly shoot-the-shits to shed some light on the topics. Our objective is not to convince you of anything. We feel that you have a sufficiently high I.Q. to make your own decision, but there is so much crap being thrown around that’s accompanied by so little analysis that someone needs to do something. We’ve decided to be that someone. So our topic for this week’s shoot-the-shit is NAFTA and was it good for America.

One of the claims to fame circulated by the Clinton Campaign is how great NAFTA was for the country and how former President Bill Clinton should be the economy czar. So we decided to take a look at the numbers to see if they support that assertion. The table below, is a compilation of data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, I’ll post that link at the end of this article, and it is authoritative.

NAFTA was passed by both houses of Congress in 1993 and signed into law by Bill Clinton in December of 1993. NAFTA went into effect on 1 January 1994. The table details “Exports”, meaning what we sold to them, and “Imports” which is what we bought from them. The last column is the “Net Difference.” If we bought more than we sold the number is a negative value and if sold more than we bought the number is a positive value. That data presented are full year figures from 1994 through 2015. The last line on the table are “Totals.”

What the Clinton campaign will point to is the “Export” column saying something like… “NAFTA increased U.S. Exports to Central and South America from $41.708 Billion in 1994 to $153.306 Billion in 2015; yes, this is true; however, taken by itself it does not tell the complete story. For the same period 1994 to 2015 Imports increased dramatically and from 1998 to 2008, Imports were significantly higher than Exports. If you look at the totals line, you’ll see that for the 1994 to 2015 period Imports exceeded Exports by $97.219 Billion. (Note: imports are actually understated because the numbers do not reflect the $200 – $750 Billion a year of illegal drugs moving through the border into the United States. But we can’t attribute that to NAFTA)

So, who was the principal beneficiary of NAFTA? I’d say Central and South America. We’re willing to call it a win-win; however, NAFTA also created the mechanism for U.S. corporations to establish manufacturing operations in Central and South America to escape the higher cost U.S. labor market and U.S. regulatory overhead – making what Donald Trump is saying in broad terms quite true.

We’ve also added a graph that we think is interesting. I think we can all see and agree that “Imports” are driven by U.S. demand for Central and South American good and services, and “Exports” are driven by Central and South America demand for U.S. goods and services. Now, look at the graph between 2008 and 2009. Imports took a dive coinciding with our own economic crash of 2008. From 2009 through 2011 Imports and Exports grew at nearly the same rate but in 2011 Imports once again  begin to decline. What do you think that says about the U.S. economy and what does it say about Central and South America’s economy? That was a little Quiz for our readers.

We hope you enjoyed the enlightenment and we encourage you to press our lackluster media to do a little homework so we can talk about the topics we love and not infringe on what they should be doing!

Have a great weekend! Spend some quality time with your buds and family; remember that relationships are perishable.

HK SP5K Pistol Comes to the USA

SP5K Inside Case View

Heckler & Koch is introducing the new SP5K pistol at the 2016 NRA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. A semi-automatic pistol based on the MP5K, the all-new 9 mm SP5K was developed by Heckler & Koch as a sporting pistol that matches the look and feel of the famous submachine gun.

Designed and manufactured as a civilian pistol, the SP5K marks the return of the roller delayed blowback operating system to an HK commercial product. This system is well-known for its accuracy and reliability. Originally developed on the G3 rifle, it has been used on many of Heckler & Koch’s most memorable firearms of the last 60 years.

“The SP5K is a unique and historic HK pistol that captures the essence of the legendary MP5K but as a semi-auto handgun,”said Michael Holley, HK-USA Vice President for Commercial Sales and Marketing. “It’s equipped with a special ergonomic handguard that protects the shooter’s supporting hand and enables a stable and comfortable grip. A bungee cord sling is also included and makes shooting an SP5K easy. It’s a fun gun to shoot and goes a long way in recreating the experience of handling and firing a real MP5 subgun.”

The SP5K duplicates the quality and fine details of the MP5, including its precision machined components. The same cold-hammer forged barrel used on the MP5K is found on the SP5K, ensuring a service life of tens of thousands of rounds. The SP5K is manufactured completely in Heckler & Koch’s Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany.

As a large size handgun that uses the proven roller delayed blowback system, the SP5K’s inherent accuracy makes it an excellent choice for target shooting and an ideal household security arm.

A wide variety of accessories can be added to increase its functionality. A Picatinny rail scope mount is attached to the upper receiver and allows optional sights to be easily mounted. The SP5K also comes “ready-for-action”in a custom-fitted, lockable, high-quality carrying case.

Covered by Heckler & Koch’s limited lifetime warranty, the HK SP5K is a faithful rendering of the iconic MP5K as a semi-automatic pistol. Projected availability is July 2016 with a MSRP of $2699.

Barrett 4050 HF SDR (Software-Defined Radio).

Barrett Communications, headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, has announced the upcoming release of its new 4050 HF SDR transceiver. At first glance, this is quite the HF transceiver, featuring 2G/3G linking and a host of other features normally not associated with the generally “boring” HF world. I’d love to get some hands-on time because it looks very, very interesting indeed. The 4050 HF SDR is aimed at a broad market including peacekeeping, law enforcement and security organizations, humanitarian and non-government organizations (NGO) and commercial businesses.

IP network connectivity makes integration with existing networks simple and on-board Wi-Fi allows for secure  seamless operation and control of the HF transceiver via iOS, Windows or Android based devices or via Windows or OSX on desktop computers. Mr Greg O’Neill, Managing Director of Barrett Communications explains “The level of user accessibility at a local and remote level is a highly significant technological advance in the HF radio communications market.  This can all be achieved whilst still providing secure communications via encryption, or frequency hopping options.”

Multiple languages will be available as standard on the transceiver. This will initially include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish with additional languages being added progressively. When the Barrett 4050 HF SDR is teamed with other Barrett HF products it also provides secure digital voice, secure email, data transfer and telephone connectivity within an HF network and onward to the international telephone network and internet.

GECKO SUITES NEXT ?

1463110423108-1061007705

Where has this week gone? Here it is Friday again, and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. We started weekly shoot-the-shits because, unlike meeting with a therapist,  you can generally expect to learn something you didn’t know before. Readers are free to make unsupported statements, insult any one they wish, use profanity or change the subject all together. You can do all this free of charge. Folks, this is better than a Japanese Wax Job.

We had a couple of topics that we wanted to shoot-the-shit about but decided on DARPA’s Z-MAN Program rather than the Facebook fiasco. Have you heard of Z-MAN? Don’t BS us, because we know you haven’t but it’s a shoot-the-shit so have at it.

The Z-MAN program’s purpose is to provide the war fighter with the same climbing ability of a Gecko. We’re a little pissed about it because about three years ago, when covering  USSOCOM TALOS, we commented that TALOS should have lizard like capabilities. People, a Gecko can climb a vertical surface, and the little bastards will jump 20+ times their body length. Now, fast forward to 2016 and DARPA has actually tested microstructures that allowed a 218 lb. man carrying a 50 lb. load to ascend and descend a glass 25 foot vertical surface using no climbing equipment. Forget belays, grappling hooks, static ropes, etc. etc. The first human climb took place in February 2012.

DARPA’s goal is to develop biologically inspired climbing aids to enable warfighters carrying a full combat load to scale vertical walls made from typical building materials. The targeted load bearing is 300 lbs. In our opinion integrating Z-MAN with TALOS would be an interesting arrangement. We’ll keep an eye on this for you and update it as information becomes available.

You can read all about Z-MAN on the DARPA site.

We hope that you have a safe and eventful weekend; spend some quality time with your buds and family.
