It is the combination of genetic analysis with traditional historical and genealogical research to study family history. For forensic investigators, it can be used to identify remains by tying the DNA to a family with a missing person or to point to the likely identity of a perpetrator. It has already lead to arrests in several high profile cold cases.

The IHIA was founded during a 1988 Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCap) international homicide symposium, sponsored by the FBI at Quantico, Virginia. This symposium brought together an elite group of professionals, from around the world, representing all death investigation disciplines. HOGUE INCORPORATED ANNOUNCES LASER ENHANCED G10 & WOOD COMPOSITE MATERIAL GRIPS

Henderson, NV – Hogue, Inc., America’s premier manufacturer of firearm grips is proud to announce their Composite Material Laser Enhanced (LE) Grips for 1911 model autoloaders. “Our popular Laser Enhanced 1911 grips are now available with precision cut piranha grip textured G10 or finely checkered reinforced wood laminate materials,” said LE Grip designer and managing partner Jim Bruhns. “In addition, we have each
variation available in both Government and Officer Model fits.”

Hogue’s LE Grips have a fully programmable, digitally-controlled microprocessor circuit. Hogue’s designers capitalized on this advantage by programming three operating modes (steady, flashing or stealth target) and four user-selectable intensity levels (brightness) into the LE Grip’s circuit. They also tapped into sophisticated power management routines to ensure long life from two common CR-2032 batteries hidden under the grip on the non-laser side – an important design feature enabling battery changes that don’t take the laser out of zero. Each LE Grip is bore-sighted at the factory while fine windage and elevation adjustments are available via small set screws. All of the Hogue LE Grip’s programming features are accessible via pressure-sensitive programming buttons on the grip.

G10 panel choices include Hogue’s G-Mascus® Black, G-Mascus Green and G-Mascus Dark Earth varieties. Wood laminate options are reinforced walnut, rosewood and blackwood. The grips are supported by a 3 year warranty and have an MSRP of $239.95.

UNDER A CONTRACT with the European Space Agency (ESA), INDRA DEVELOPS TECHNOLOGY TO GIVE DIRECT EARTH OBSERVATION SATELLITE ACCESS TO ORGANIZATIONS

· They will gain intermediary-less and near real-time access to images of any point on the planet and glean essential information for the security or success of their business operations

· Indra is reducing the infrastructure necessary to receive and process data from Earth observation satellites, thus placing a powerful tool into the hands of its end users. One antenna and a direct access terminal will suffice to generate around high-resolution images every 24 hours

· In addition to its many other possible applications, the system will help improve the management of maritime operations, coastal surveillance, forest firefighting missions, interventions in major emergencies, environmental control and crop monitoring

Indra headquarters (Alcobendas, Spain) 01.jpg

Madrid, 24 July 2018.- Under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA), Indra is developing an innovative terminal designed to enable governments, organizations and companies to directly and autonomously retrieve data from earth observation satellites and get extremely high-resolution images virtually in real time.

They will only need two main elements: an antenna to download the telemetry sent by satellites and this innovative Direct Access Terminal (DAT), which will process the data received to generate images with maximum celerity. After signing agreements with satellite operators, users will be allowed to independently connect to satellites, thus rendering the entire process of retrieving information of interest more agile and a matter of minutes from the data acquisition.

It was conceived so that any organization or company seeking to monitor a situation in any part of the world can do so whenever it wants. The enormously valuable images can have resolution sizes that are in many cases smaller than one meter per pixel: this is the case of ESA’s several radar satellites (SAR) that reach up to 0,25 meters per pixel. Radars allow to collect images at night and regardless of cloud cover or weather conditions that might otherwise reduce visibility.

The degree of detail of those images suffices to identify a vessel at sea or vehicle anyplace on the planet. They can help detect and monitor spreading wildfires. They can delimit zones affected by flooding or buildings that have been damaged following an earthquake. Among the seemingly endless possibilities, they are the most effective and quickest way to examine the conditions of crops across a country and estimate cereal harvest yields for the year, or containers stored in customs-free zones at ports.

Indra’s system reduces the elements necessary to access this powerful observation capability to the absolute minimum. This capability had thus far only been within the reach of satellite operators equipped with expensive and sophisticated infrastructures that include control stations deployed around the globe and huge data processing centers. Indra’s terminal nevertheless lets end users get access to only the functional features they really need.

Indra’s terminal has been initially conceived to receive data from Spain’s PAZ radar satellite and the twin systems, TerraSAR-X and TamDEM-X, which will soon begin operating jointly as a single constellation capable of observing any point on the Earth.

Indra has designed the system to be easily adaptable for receiving and processing data from other satellites. This renders Indra’s system as one of the most advanced and versatile solutions on the market. In less than 15 minutes from the data acquisition, users can get the image of the constellation that they need. The system’s daily surveillance capability will cover an area of approximately 300,000 km2, which is equivalent to 60% of the size of Spain.

Knowledge to innovate

This innovative solution was developed under ESA General Support Technology Programme (GSTP), within Element 2 “Make” dedicated to commercial technologies and products, from the accumulated fruits of Indra’s hard work and dedication in some of the world’s most ambitious space projects. The company has been working for over 30 years as a trailblazer in deploying Satellite Ground Segments and space data processing centers.

For example, the company has implemented the network of stations for managing the Galileo satellites, the European global positioning system that will become one of the largest satellite navigation constellations in orbit by 2020 with a total of 30 satellites operating in full coordination. It also implemented the stations that will send the satellites messages on which the precision of the entire system depends, essential data enabling them to compare onboard clock information and orbital positioning: an error of only one billionth of a second in the information would cause a position error of 30 cm in Earth-based user systems, which is too high for critical services such as air navigation.

More recently, the company led the complete Ground Segment deployment of the Paz satellite, Spain’s first radar satellite. A distributed Ground Segment at the facilities of the Spanish Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA) and the Aerospace Observation Systems Centre (CESAEROB) in Torrejón de Ardoz, with a third backup component in Maspalomas (Canary Islands). Indra is now leading the land Ground Segment deployment for the Ingenio optical satellite, which Spain will soon launch into space.

CRKT’s Williams Tactical Pen

20180723_111111

In 2018 Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT®) introduced a new version of its wildly successful John Williams tactical pen, but before presenting the salient points, let’s define what a tactical pen is.

The tactical pen is a writing implement first and foremost, but its design characteristics make it suitable for defensive use in situations where local laws or travel restrictions do not permit access to or use of a firearm. When employed against a belligerent assailant it will successfully modify the aggressive behavior potentially saving your life.

John Williams, its designer, is a former U.S. Army Officer and martial artist with an ancient Japanese preference as can been seen in his HISSATSU™ fix blade knife and one of my favorites the HISSOHU™depicted below.

HISSHOU®

20180723_110716Williams’ pen is clean and every bit as stylish as any Monte Blanc. It’s 6061 Aluminum steel construction is robust and finished in a very classy non-reflective black anodized look. The pocket clip is designed so that it won’t snag or damage your finest apparel; it’s also removable by simply unscrewing the retention cap. The pen weighs a mere 1.2 ounces so it can be carried comfortably.

If the pen is to be mightier than the sword, it too must be a fine writing instrument and Williams’ choice of the Fisher Space Pen Cartridge achieves that goal.

The Fisher Space Pen’s Sealed Pressurized Ink Cartridge Performs in temperatures from -30ºF to +250ºF, underwater, in zero gravity, at any angle–even upside down! It sets the standard for dependability! That performance makes it the number one choice of ski patrols, search and rescue teams, law enforcement agencies, armed forces, or everyone demanding reliability in a writing instrument.

CRKT’s Williams Tactical Pen is a superb writing instrument that deserves to be called an executive pen. It is a great lifesaving gift idea that will set you back $69.99 directly from CRKT. But, do shop it around to avail yourself of this great pen at even better pricing. Check it out!

Sustainable tactical data communication: HENSOLDT presents the first modified MIDS terminal to the The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw)

With this upgrade, the sensor solution house supports the Bundeswehr in continuing to comprehensively fulfill its military mission in the future as part of a data network.

Taufkirchen, Germany, 20th July 2018 – Since the beginning of the millennium, the Bundeswehr has used the Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) for secure and protected mobile tactical communication via Link-16 in its own and in joint missions with user states inside and outside of NATO. In order to continue using the MIDS Low Volume Terminals (MIDS-LVT) in the coming decade and beyond, a so-called Block Upgrade 2 (BU2) is required. As part of this conversion, the terminals’ hardware and software will be comprehensively modernized, in particular to significantly increase data throughput and to adapt crypto components and frequency management to new requirements.

At the end of June 2018, the first converted terminals were ceremonially presented to representatives of the Bundeswehr. With these so-called risk reduction terminals, the WTD 81 and other Bundeswehr services can carry out technical investigations, integration and qualification on the working platforms (including Tornado, Eurofighter, A400M, frigates, corvettes, Joint Fire Support Team and Link-16 radio network).

HENSOLDT Customer Service has been commissioned to carry out the conversion of almost four hundred MIDS terminals of the German Armed Forces. The project includes the integration of modified or renewed assemblies and components under the responsibility of the EuroMIDS partner companies, as well as the subsequent re-qualification of the modified terminals. The project will be carried out in the coming years at the Taufkirchen site.

The companies HENSOLDT, Thales, Leonardo and Indra are equally involved in the EuroMIDS consortium. EuroMIDS supplies and supports the majority of MIDS terminals in use in Germany, France, Italy and Spain. HENSOLDT has developed the power amplifier for the terminals supplied by EuroMIDS and has produced more than 6,000 units and delivered them to EuroMIDS, but also to the American company ViaSat, which previously produced MIDS terminals as well. HENSOLDT Customer Services supports the terminals used by the Bundeswehr and the Austrian Armed Forces as well as all power amplifiers used inside and outside NATO.

THE NEW FN 509® TACTICAL

The FN 509® Tactical, an extension of the FN 509 family, is based on FN’s submission pistol that the U.S. Army tested for its Modular Handgun Trials, but includes the significant improvements to the design that were implemented in the FN 509.

The pistol features the company’s patent-pending Low-Profile Optics Mounting System™ that enables the platform to accept more than ten commercially-available miniature red dot (MRD) optics that co-witness with the suppressor-height night sights and remain adaptable to future optics releases with no requirement of direct milling of the slide.

The slide cap, for use when not shooting with an optic, has raised sight wings that protect iron sight alignment if the pistol is dropped or jostled, and provides a textured ramp for racking the slide against a belt loop, pant pocket or boot. An FN-signature 4.5-inch, cold hammer-forged, stainless-steel barrel with target crown, ½” x 28 threads that accept the bulk of 9mm suppressors available and thread cap with integrated O-ring to prevent loosening during use complete the top end.
Lastly, the 24-round magazines, nearly identical in length to the pistol’s slide, maximize ammunition capacity without impacting carry convenience.

Applied Ballistics Future of Radar

In this video Bryan Litz, a highly regarded ballistician for Barnes, resents his use of Doppler radar.

Background: The application of Doppler radar systems to collect precise external ballistic data was pioneered by Infinition Inc of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. The company developed a device marketed as LabRadar . The system has an operational range of 100 yards and accurately measures the velocity of the projectile along its path. By collecting velocity with a high degree of accuracy it is then possible to determine things like ballistic coefficients. Extremely useful tool to accurately asses new bullet geometry design.

UNDERSTANDING WHERE RUSSOPHOBIA COMES FROM

TGIF readers! We made it through another week and you are undoubtedly weary of the Russian hubbub as I am.

It’s amazing! Russians are still interfering, they are hacking us, cyber attacking BLAH, BLAH! So, for this week’s shoot the shit I thought it might make some sense to take a look at Russophobia, and yes it is an officially diagnosed phobia.

I believe that we have been psychologically condition by Hollywood to fear Russia. In all of my years going to the movies, I have yet to see a movie where Russians were portrayed as nice people; which, by the way, is inconsistent with a couple of Russians that I know. Hollywood has created this image of burly low toned tattooed guys running around saying “DAAAA” They’re either killing you or attaching 12 volt batteries to your testicles.

Image result for Hard looking Russians

If you don’t believe that, watch the 2014 Danzel Washington film, “The Equalizer”, in which the Russian oligarch named “Vladimir Pushkin”, living in Moskva, is head of a Boston crime mob. Note that the oligarch doesn’t look like the clean cut guy on the left; instead he looks like the guy on the right.

Image result for Putin Image result for vladimir pushkin equalizer

Now, I don’t know who the hell this is supposed to be but he was portrayed as Pushkin’s right hand man – looks a little like Dmitry Medvedev don’t you think ?

Related imageImage result for vladimir pushkin equalizer

We’ve been programmed by the film industry to see Russian women like this…

Image result for ugly Russian women 1945

This is a more recent batch of Russian military ladies. Not too shabby and I will bet you that at least two or three like Harley Davidson.

Image result for group of Beautiful Russian Women

I’m not here to support or condemn  Vladimir Putin, or Russia,  but Russophobia has worked its way into our diplomacy. Remember that Russians are deeply nationalist as the German Army found out during WWII. They’ve suffered for years and survived. Our approach to repairing Russo relations requires an understanding of their psyche as much as good diplomacy. Russophobia has no place in our interactions with Russia or Putin.

Feel free to share your opinions, this is a shoot the shit, so there are no rules. Feel free to make unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether. And, we’ll never say that you’re in denial.

Have a great weekend! Be safe and spend some quality time with your buds and family.

THE HELSINKI SUMMIT EXTRAVAGANZA

Image result for helsinki summit 2018

Readers have you been keeping up with the Trump bashing over the Helsinki Summit ? It’s like watching hookers going at it over who gets the trick. You’d think people with a fully loaded salary of over $270K a year could conduct themselves in a quasi professional manner. First some background.

  • First point – In 2014, the United States actively worked to depose Viktor Yanukovych, former President of Ukraine and pro Russian politician. You may recall Victoria Jane Nuland, the former Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the United States Department of State, and her infamous “F— the EU” comment. When you read the leaked conversation she had with the U.S. Ambassador to the Ukraine it becomes clear that the United States was interfering in the Ukraine to establish a more favorable government to NATO interests. This project began well before 2014 during the Clinton State Department. Russia responded to the interference by moving into Eastern Ukraine and annexing the Crimea via a referendum. Now, I may be terribly uninformed and / or naïve , but In this observer’s mind that event seems to be the reason for Russia’s 2016 interference in U.S. elections.
  • Second point – Edward Snowden, the pedantic little bastard, handed the Chinese and the Russians everything they wanted to know regarding NSA methods, practices and sources. For all of the Congressional chest thumpers blasting POTUS, keep in mind that the NSA was conducting intercepts against Angela Merkel and others. The last time I checked GmBH is an ally and a democracy.

So, here we are calling Vladimir Putin a liar and trashing our Commander In Chief when we too have dirty laundry that should be washed more discreetly. What we’ve done is provide the Russian propaganda machine the ammunition it needs to sell the idea that we are hypocrites.

So, Trump’s “we both have made mistakes” may not be that inappropriate and his attempt to lay the ground work to bridge U.S. – Russia relations.

The people calling for stronger sanctions against Russia may want to rethink that strategy. Here’s the reason why.

The EU is having its struggles and several of the Eastern European members are becoming weary of having a group of unelected bureaucrats dictate immigration policy. If those countries leave the EU and if Russia’s economy is subjected to more damage we may find a Russian/Eastern European coalition being formed.

The current Russian state armament program for the period (2011-2020) is a $250 billion project that’s been underway since 2010. This too is a response to Russian concerns about it’s sovereignty in light of being surrounded by NATO.

POTUS’ soft approach at Helsinki may be more enlightened than his critics make them out to be.

Improved for 2018 with an in-line redesign to add Galco’s innovative new UniClip™ and Ultimate Stealth™ clips, the open-top Scout is constructed with the rough side of the leather out. This construction method provides additional stability in the waistband, as well as a smooth leather holster pocket for a faster, smoother feel on the draw. The reinforced mouth allows for easy return to the holster.

The ambidextrous Scout is supplied with two types of interchangeable tuckable clips. The first is the UniClip™, designed to go over the belt, but which also works well without a belt. The second is the Ultimate Stealth™ clip with hook, which fits on the trouser waistband, under or behind a belt with just the clip showing, for the ultimate in stealthy concealment! Both belt clips are adjustable for cant, making the Scout suitable for strongside, crossdraw, or appendix carry positions.

Available in natural finish with black mouth band, the Scout’s MSRP is $83.

The National Tactical Officers Association Releases Updated Tactical Response and Operations Standard (TROS) for Law Enforcement

Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 2018) – TheNational Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to serving the law enforcement community, announces the latest update to its Tactical Response and Operation Standard for Law Enforcement (TROS). This document establishes a basic set of standards for law enforcement agencies and serves as an efficient, core set of concepts and principles that improve standardization within the profession of tactical law enforcement services.

The NTOA’s mission is to enhance the performance and professional status of law enforcement personnel by providing a credible and proven training resource, as well as a forum for the development of tactics and information exchange. In line with this mission, the association first offered the SWAT Standard in 2008. In 2011 and 2015, the standard was reviewed, expanded and updated to represent the most contemporary best practices being used in the law enforcement community.

In July 2017, the NTOA once again began the arduous task of updating the TROS. Keeping in mind the impact that this document has on our profession, it was critical that input from our members was considered. The NTOA contacted all state association presidents, as well as several federal partners, and invited them to serve on the review committee. The final committee consisted of 20 participants, each bringing valuable input from their associations and organizations that they represented. The member comment period was then opened for one month.

All comments offered by members were carefully assessed and taken into consideration. The overall goal of the review committee was to ensure that the voluntary consensus standard continues to provide guidance to law enforcement special operations leaders and evolves to meet the ever-changing tactics, technology and practices of those in our profession. The most substantive changes to the document included the addition of recommended equipment lists, better guidance on both TEMS and CNT capabilities, and a terminology change from Priorities of Life to Safety Priorities.

The NTOA does not mandate compliance with this standard or attach such compliance as a prerequisite for any benefit granted under membership. This and future versions of this standard are living documents. It will require our organization to seek out those best practices and ensure that they are accurately reflected in the standard.

The latest version of the NTOA Tactical Response and Operations Standard can be downloaded from the NTOA’s website at ntoa.org/pdf/swatstandards.pdf.

For more information on the National Tactical Officers Association, visit www.ntoa.orgor call 800-279-9127. Join the NTOA today and start receiving the benefits of better training and stay on top of the ever-changing and challenging world of law enforcement.

WALTHER ARMS PPS M2 RMSc

20180707_220931

Walther Arms hit a homerun when they introduce the 9mm subcompact PPS M2. They then sweetened the deal mid year when the company released the PPS M2 RMSc. The Shield compact red dot sight is a clean fit that provides a level of tactical advantage not available in the basic PPS M2. The value proposition is extraordinary.

Leading the way in long-gun upgrades are the new Crimson Trace Tactical Lights. These innovations include the CWL-102 white LED light, which delivers up to 500 lumens and can be activated with a tap-on/tap-off tail cap or via a remote on/off activation pad attached to the light with a linking cable. These lights are impact resistant and water resistant up to a depth of 1 meter. Models are available to fit standard rails or the M-Lok®/Keymod accessory slots.

Crimson Trace also offers the award-winning LiNQ® wireless laser sight and light solution. This remotely operated green laser sight and bright light is designed to securely attach to any MSR that is equipped with a M1913 Picatinny or Weaver accessory rail. The compact module of the LiNQ laser/light system houses a green laser sight and powerful 300-Lumen LED white light. The replacement activation grip controls the module through a secure singular closed system. That module can be operated in four modes: light only, laser only, laser and light, and laser and strobe light. The grip and the module are pre-paired at Crimson Trace’s state-of-the-art factory when packaged for shipping, and FREE mounting tools and batteries are included.

Another popular MSR upgrade is the Crimson Trace MVF-515™ laser sight. This Modular Vertical Foregrip has a bright 200-Lumen LED white light partnered with a red or green laser sight. Peter Strzok Take A Cold Shower !

It’s Friday and thank God we made it through another week. I’ve noticed we haven’t had a good shoot the shit in a while, that’s because I was at Eurosatory and it’s taken a few weeks to get back on track. So, let’s get started.

20180620_170621Eurosatory is held every other year in Paris at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre, Paris, France. If you’re staying in Central Paris, you get there on the RER B train. To get to the RER B station, Gard du Nord, you can take Uber, a taxi, or use the Navigo Pass, which is by far your best option. A Navigo pass will cost you 27 Euros and gives you unlimited access to the superb Parisian mass transit system, from Monday through Sunday; I highly recommend it. Why should you attend Eurosatory?

The event is at the top of a very short list of global Defense Industry conferences, DSEi in London is probably larger but Eurosatory is right up there. So, if you want to immerse yourself in what the EU’s defense sector is doing, Eurosatory is where you want to be. Excellent conferences and exhibits. This year, the U.S. had 144 companies exhibiting, a pathetic number, so get on the exhibitor list and represent the U.S. in larger numbers.

Paris, even with the influx of immigrants is happening, and if you are a cigar smoker, visiting “A La Civette” is a must. They’re right around the corner from the Louvre, at 157 Rue Saint Honoré, there you can score a killer smoke that you probably won’t find anywhere in the U.S.  In my opinion A La Civette is unquestionably the best cigar shop in Paris.  Remember, Il n’y a rien comme un excellent cigare après un excellent dîner translated it means there’s nothing like an excellent cigar after an excellent dinner. Voila!

This “mon amis” is a genuine Cuba Partagas

As you all know, the U.S. and parts of the world are consumed by the Peter Strzok / Lisa Page extravaganza. I’ll give you my uninformed read on the issue. Peter Strzok has been a boy scout the majority of his career. Things changed for Peter when he meets Lisa Page, an attorney for the FBI. I believe that Lisa was a avid feminist who saw Hillary Clinton as the salvation to the global plight of women – unaided by hallucinogens. So, Peter Strzok jumps on the band wagon and starts texting Lisa in a way to keep her aroused. Huge mistake! In so doing he has single handily destroyed his career and  destroyed the public confidence and respect for the world’s finest law enforcement agency. Dumb!

Alright, as always feel free to make unsupported statements, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether. And, remember that we will never accuse you of being in denial!

Have a great weekend, be safe and spend some quality time with your friends and family.
