Precision Rifle Expo’s 1st Annual Event Draws Capacity Crowds

The two-day, precision rifle event, held Sept. 15 – 16, 2018, brought novices and professionals together for the first time to share their passion for long range shooting.

Blakely, Ga. (September 2018) – The 1st Annual Precision Rifle Expo (PRE), held Sept. 15 – 16, 2018 at the Arena Training Facility in Blakely, Georgia, recorded an attendance of over 600 new and seasoned long range shooters. Over forty exhibitors showed products unique to this fast-growing shooting sport under the air-conditioned tents.

“The weather was beautiful, the exhibitors were set up in the retail tents, and the shooting areas were absolutely top-notch,” Phil Cashin, President of MasterPiece Arms and an exhibitor, commented. “Never before has there been a gathering of the top professionals in the field of long-range precision shooting and you can see and feel the excitement here as shooters are meeting their idols and getting the chance to learn a thing or two from these guys. We are also seeing a lot of people and their families that have been curious about the sport and you can see them on the shooting lanes, their expressions of joy when they hit a target from 500 yards to over 1 mile out.”

Exhibitors at the PRE not only provided attendees with products for sale, but also offered their knowledge and passion for the sport and the opportunity for many to put their products to the test on the shooting ranges. Exhibitors included rifle and chassis manufacturers, optics, gear and accessories, ammunition, reloading and barrel manufacturers.

The Arena Training Facility, a 2,300-acre multipurpose training complex for government, law enforcement, military and civilians, provided a perfect backdrop for the first-of-a-kind shooting event. Being one of the largest training facilities in the southeast, they were capable of accommodating several exhibition areas, training classes in classroom settings and on ranges, and a variety of shooting locations, as well as on-site lodging for exhibitors. An exceptional series of classes, seminars and instructional events were offered featuring some of the top talent on the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competition trail, law enforcement and military legendary snipers, firearms trainers and less-lethal training.

Steyr Arms Names Scott Tirman Controller

BESSEMER, Ala. (Sept. 26, 2018) — Steyr Arms announced today that Scott Tirman has been appointed to the position of controller for the company. Tirman will serve as the company’s principal accounting officer and will report directly to Scott O’Brien, Steyr Arms president and CEO. The appointment is effective immediately.

As controller, Tirman will lead the company’s overall accounting, financial planning and analysis, project finance and treasury functions. He will have overall responsibility for ensuring that the company’s growth is financially supported while also overseeing the financial governance for the business. He will be responsible for the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with accounting principles and international reporting standards.

“Scott is a seasoned financial professional with a successful track record of driving process and operational improvements,” said O’Brien. “In addition to his accounting acumen, his experience makes him ideally qualified to take on this leadership role at Steyr Arms, as we continue to grow and run the company more cost-effectively and efficiently.”

Prior to joining the Steyr Arms team, Tirman held the position of governmental acquisition contractor and auditor for Infrastructure Resources, where he focused on the audit and audit readiness at the Department of Defense. He also worked at Snelling Professional Services, hiring and interviewing accounting professional and as a financial manager/controller with the United States Marine Corps. He brings more than six years of accounting experience to Steyr Arms.

Tirman studied accounting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and obtained a financial management certificate from the Department of Defense Financial Management School. He also was awarded a Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma during his time with the Marine Corps.

Originally from Indiana, Tirman currently resides in Helena, Ala.

The National Black Eye!

Related imageI spent most of the day watching the Ford-Kavanaugh Judicial Committee hearing. What’s been done to both of these individuals is beyond the pail!  A plethora of unsubstantiated allegations were advanced along with suggestions that if Judge Kavanaugh did not call for an FBI investigation he is, by Senatorial proclamation, guilty of wrongdoing. Vulgar and Unbelievable!

Let me share with you moms and dads, Republican and Democrat what this event has achieved. Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have created precedent guaranteeing that your sons’ and daughters’ aspirations and futures can be damaged by allegations of things they may have done in their youth: high school, pledging for a sorority or fraternity, during beach week, party or other event.

There are reams of medical and behavioral research analyzing 16 – 24 year old behavior. These studies are addressed both men and women, heterosexual and homosexual. Without getting into medical or clinical granularity, studies have suggested that this age group is more influenced by physiology and peer pressure than by reason. I think that as parents you all know that. But, to allow allegations (especially unsubstantiated) of misconduct in that age group to cloud, and even destroy,  your son’s or daughter’s career and/ or character as an adult is a sin. This is precisely what Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have succeeded in doing.

IF YOU ARE FAA PART 107 sUAS CERTIFIED

If you hold a Part 107 sUAS certificate, be sure that you’re on top of your expiration date. Part 107 requires that you take a recurrent knowledge exam, or if you are Part 61 a training class,  every 24 months. Part 107 went into effect in 2016 and the year is rapidly coming to an end. You don’t want to be in controlled airspace with an expired certificate.

The recurrent exam is 40 questions focusing on regulations, crew resource management and VFR. Be familiar with the NAS (National Airspace System), NOTAMs, and VFR sectional charts. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam, which is more than enough time.

The knives themselves have been water jetted, chamfered, and heat treated. They are now being ground. The G10 Production Handles haves been prototyped and are being tweaked. I can’t overstate the important of getting the handles resolved when making a new knife model. So far so good. Right now we are still about 3-4 weeks behind schedule but they are moving steadily. Shipping window has moved from Sept. 15 to Oct 15th. We had over 100 pre-orders. Once the shipping window opens we will start getting them out as many as we can per week in the numeric order that they were placed. We appreciate your patience. What To Avoid When Christmas Shopping for the White House

With the Holiday Season nearly upon us, I want to share a personal story of what to avoid when planning your Holiday shopping for the White House.

If you’re a regular reader, and you should be, you know that I’m a Yuuuuge Donald Trump fan, so for Christmas 2017 I decided to do something nice for the CIC., I know he likes Big Macs, so I decided to send him a McDonald’s gift card. I would have sent him a Big Mac but the Secret Service would have been all over that – a joke.  So, I sent him a Christmas card with an enclosed Mickey D’s gift card.

Late January, almost February 2018, I received a lovely letter and thank you card, from the White House, along with a hermetically sealed envelope containing the McDonald’s gift card I sent the President.

I was a little bummed out. Readers, after all of the crap he and his cabinet has had to put up with since January of 2017, I thought perhaps a Big Mac (they have these 2 for $5 deals) for the CIC, Chief of Staff Gen. Kelly, Secretary of Defense  Gen. Mattis, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, and maybe even then C.I.A. Director Mike Pompeo would lift all their spirits…

…but that didn’t work out.

So, overcoming feelings of rejection, I sat and wondered how my gesture would have been received by Barack Obama’s White House…

Federal Premium Shooters Vincent Hancock and Caitlin Connor Crowned World Champions

ANOKA, Minnesota – September 18, 2018 – Federal Premium Ammunition sponsored shooters and brand ambassadors Vincent Hancock and Caitlin Connor each won gold medals and were crowned world champions at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Changwon, South Korea, held August 31 to September 15, 2018.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist Hancock picked up his fourth World Championship title in Men’s Skeet to close the World Championships. Hancock marched through the rainy qualification rounds without a miss over 125 targets and only missed once in the final to secure his place in the record books. Hancock becomes the first person ever to win four World titles in Men’s Skeet and is also now one of three men in the Shotgun discipline to earn four world titles in his career.
Along with the gold, Hancock also secured an Olympic Men’s Skeet quota for the United States. A quota is essentially a country’s ticket to participate in a specific event in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. In Shooting competition at the Olympic Games, a country can earn up to two quotas in each event – but that doesn’t guarantee a specific athlete to compete in the Games, just that his/her country has a spot to do so.
In her final, Caitlin Connor didn’t miss until the 35th target and finished with a score of 57. Olympic shooting legend Kim Rhode won silver and Amber English took the bronze, marking the first U.S. sweep ever in women’s skeet.
“The final was very exciting,” said Connor. “I was a little nervous at first, but then I got into the groove and had fun shooting with my teammates. It feels really good to have had three U.S. flags up there. I was glad it was us three. It was a great day for USA.”
This win was Connor’s first international gold medal. She won silver in 2015 and six other World Cup silver medals across her career. Coming into the competition, Rhode was ranked No. 1 in the world, Connor third and English fourth. In addition to the podium sweep, the United States claimed the maximum number of two Olympic Games quotas available in Women’s Skeet.
“We are very proud of Team Federal’s Caitlin Connor and Vincent Hancock for their wins at the World Championships,” said Federal Premium Senior Director of Marketing Jason Nash. “We look forward to being part of many more of their successes and this team’s march to Tokyo in 2020.”
In other competition news, Nic Moschetti added to Team USA’s outstanding shotgun performance in Changwon, capturing the silver medal in Men’s Junior Skeet while Austen Smith earned herself a bronze medal in Junior Women’s Skeet. Kayle Browning and Ashley Connor earned a bronze medal in the Women’s Trap Team event alongside Aeriel Skinner. In total, the U.S. Shotgun Team, sponsored by Federal Premium, earned 12 medals including three gold, four silver, and five bronze.

Parabon® Announces 10th Solved Case in First 100 Days of Snapshot® Genetic Genealogy Service

Reston, Va. (18 Sep 2018) — The arrest of Marlon Michael Alexander by the Montgomery County MD Police (MCPD) last Thursday marked the tenth case since May in which Snapshot® DNA analysis by Parabon® NanoLabs (Parabon) has helped investigators identify a suspect sought for a violent crime. The company’s Snapshot Genetic Genealogy Service combines new DNA testing methods with genetic and traditional genealogical research to uncover the likely identity of a perpetrator or identify human remains. With a closure rate of more than one case every two weeks, the new service has generated a wave of excitement among law enforcement investigators. Police around the country are racing to use Snapshot in hopes of solving their most vexing cases, many of which have been cold for decades.

Alexander is being held without bond for a series of crimes that began in 2007, including three first-degree rapes, an attempted sexual offense and multiple counts of first-degree burglary. Whereas in the first nine solved cases, Parabon’s genetic genealogists were able to narrow the investigation down to a single person or family, this investigation required more teamwork. At a press conference Friday, Police Chief Tom Manger reported that the leads provided by Parabon allowed detectives to identify a distant relative of Alexander’s in Georgia who was able to provide critical information about her family tree. Detective Steve “Smugs” Smugeresky, who has experience performing genealogy research, was then able to complete the tree and ultimately identify Alexander as a suspect. With other facts about the rapes that also pointed to Alexander, MCPD obtained a search warrant to obtain his DNA sample last week, which was analyzed by the department’s crime lab and determined to be a match to the crime scene samples. “This was a great example of the power of public/private partnerships,” said Detective David Davis, who led the investigation. “Together we solved a case that has haunted our community for over a decade.”

CeCe Moore, who leads the forensic genetic genealogy unit at Parabon, is enthusiastic about the collaborations her team is building with agencies like MCPD. “This type of investigation is so new, we are still learning how best to work together. Now that we better understand our respective strengths and have built trust in one another, we are operating with increasing effectiveness. Our collaboration with MCPD is what makes this case so satisfying.”

Parabon’s CEO, Dr. Steven Armentrout, says more success stories are forthcoming. “Thanks to the enthusiasm over our offerings, we are involved in many investigations, which are at various stages of completion. Several are merely awaiting a confirmatory DNA match, but have not been announced.”

Memphis Campaign Targets Illegal Gun Purchases

NSSF, ATF, U.S. Attorney, Area Law Enforcement Emphasize ‘Don’t Lie for the Other Guy’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As part of an ongoing national effort to help prevent illegal “straw” purchases of firearms, the National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are reminding the public in the Memphis area that stiff penalties are in place for individuals convicted of such purchases.

Billboard advertisements for the Don’t Lie for the Other GuyTM program have been purchased by NSSF in key locations throughout the region with the message: “Buy a gun for someone who can’t and buy yourself 10 years in jail. Don’t Lie for the Other Guy.”

The month-long public awareness campaign was officially launched today with a short program at the Bass Pro Shops, 1 Bass Pro Dr., Memphis, Tenn. Present at the event were representatives of the ATF Nashville Field Division, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee, Shelby County Attorney’s Office, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Memphis, Memphis Police Department and NSSF.

More than 22.5 million impressions will be delivered via billboards, digital and social media advertising around Memphis along with more than a half a million impressions through 30-second radio spots airing on local stations. Memphis was chosen for this special campaign by ATF. No taxpayer dollars are used. The program is funded in full by the firearms industry.

“As evidenced today, the firearms industry is proud of its longstanding cooperative relationship with the ATF and the entire law enforcement community by assisting them in their efforts to combat the criminal acquisition and misuse of firearms,” said NSSF Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel. 

“Don’t Lie” is a cooperative program ATF and NSSF, the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry. The effort was developed more than a decade ago to raise public awareness about the seriousness of the crime of purchasing a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so. The program also helps ATF educate firearms dealers so they can be better prepared to deter potential straw purchases. The public campaign drives home the message that anyone attempting an illegal firearm purchase faces a stiff federal felony penalty of up to 10 years in jail or up to $250,000 in fines.

To legally purchase a firearm, a person must be able to pass an FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check and fully comply with state and local laws. When a criminal knows he cannot pass this check, he may try to induce a friend or other person to make the purchase on his behalf, which is known as a straw purchase and is a felony.

This public awareness campaign constitutes only part of the Don’t Lie for the Other Guy outreach effort. The full Don’t Lie for the Other Guy program, which also involves educating firearms retailers to better detect and prevent straw purchases, has been rolled out in major cities throughout the country. In the retailer segment, federal firearms licensees are provided a Don’t Lie for the Other Guy retailer kit containing a training video and informational brochure for storeowners and staff, as well as point-of-purchase displays aimed to deter illegal straw purchases.

Paul meant to say that a First Focal Plane optic allows the shooter to range the target at any magnification setting, the reticle size does in fact change.

Mr. Joseph M. Murphy to Receive The Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award

Murphy, a Founding Director of Country Bank New York and a United States Marine, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Marine Corps University Foundation’s prestigious Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award. Mr. Murphy was chosen for the top distinction in recognition of his exemplary service and dedication to the community.
The Russell Leadership Award honors Mr. Murphy’s lifelong commitment to excellence in leadership and character which reflects the history, traditions, and ethos of the Marine Corps. Mr. Murphy will receive this award at the Major General John H. Russell Luncheon on October 18, 2018 at The Union League Club in New York City.
Major General John H. Russell, USMC, was the 16th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award established in his honor by the Marine Corps University Foundation, is presented annually at a luncheon to a distinguished American whose commitment to personal and professional excellence embodies those qualities of leadership and character uniquely associated with the United States Marine Corps.
In addition to his many endeavors, Mr. Murphy is Chairman of Value Investors, Inc. a national real estate development and finance company. For over twenty years the Murphy Family have been the majority owners of Value Express LLC, a mortgage origination and securitization entity.
Mr. Murphy was born and raised in the Inwood Section of Manhattan. His father, Michael, was from Dunworley, County Cork, and his mother, Mary Sullivan, was from Ballyporeen, County Tipperary. He attended Rice High School in Harlem, and subsequently Iona College, both were
operated by The Congregation of Irish Christian Brothers. After one year at Iona, he joined the United States Marine Corps.
Mr. Murphy served as a Platoon Sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, from 1953 to 1956, in defense of United Nations positions in Korea. He remained in the Reserves until 1961. Subsequently, Mr. Murphy visited Afghanistan with General James L. Jones, Jr. USMC (Ret), Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commanding General of NATO, on a research mission to study the opium/heroin problem with the hope of finding a solution. Mr. Murphy assembled a team in Brussels to create a “White Paper” which was presented to General Jones, the DEA and NATO.
Following his military service, Mr. Murphy completed his undergraduate at Iona College and graduated with Honors in 1959. He later attended the Graduate School of Business at New York University. Mr. Murphy received his CPA in public accounting and spent three years at Pannell, Kerr, Forster & Co. and six years at Price Waterhouse & Co. He was associated with Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL), Belgium’s second largest banking and investment company, from 1970 to 1990. Mr. Murphy was a Director and Member of the Executive Committee of GBL, President and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. affiliate, Lambert Brussels Corporation after 1974. GBL invested in Drexel Burnham Lambert and Mr. Murphy was active as a Director and Member of the Executive Committee until 1989.
Mr. Murphy has been an active Director of the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation since 1997. He was a Director of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (Museum of the Marine Corps) in Quantico, VA. He was also a Trustee, Member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. Mr. Murphy also served on the Board of the Marine Corps University Foundation and as Treasurer Emeritus received the Leonard F. Chapman medal for his service.
Mr. Murphy is Chairman Emeritus of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Advisory Committee and a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Columbia University Medical Center Board of Advisors. He was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as a Member of the National Board of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. He was a Member of the Financial Advisory Board of the Congregation of Christian Brothers-Eastern American Province. He was a Trustee, Member of the Executive, Finance and Marketing Committees of Iona College for over 20 years and is now Trustee Emeritus. Additionally, Mr. Murphy funded The Murphy Science and Technology Center, The Iona College Art Center, Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium and Mazzella Field named after the parents of his wife, JoAnn Murphy. He was a Director and Member of the Executive Committee of the Partnership for Quality Education, which was established in the Archdiocese of New York in 1998 by John Cardinal O’Connor.
In 2004, Mr. Murphy was also a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
As the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Executive Committee for Country Bank, Mr. Murphy has ensured the bank exemplifies solid corporate citizenship within the communities it serves; New York City, Riverdale, Woodlawn and Scarsdale. Country Bank
fosters and values the spirit of volunteerism in its staff and members of the Murphy family have served on Board of Directors for many not-for-profit and charitable organizations. In 2016, the Bank was awarded the Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award by the Association of Development Officers for its support of Westchester nonprofits and their causes. In June 2018, Country Bank received the Burke Award from Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in recognition of its longtime support of the medical institution as it continues to expand its excellence of healthcare to the New York community. The bank is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Mr. Murphy and his wife, JoAnn, reside in Eastchester, New York. They have five children; Patricia, Joseph Jr., Christopher (deceased), Carolyn and Mary and are blessed with eight grandchildren.

BUSHNELL’s LONG AWAITED TRS-26

Bushnell’s TRS-26 has finally hit the shelves and I’ll be reviewing it for our readers over the coming weeks. I can sum up my initial impression by saying that it was well worth the wait! The TRS-26 is part of Bushnell’s latest AR Optics line and I’m anxious to report on it. I’ll be putting the company’s 3X magnifier behind it and we’ll see how it rocks. Look for my review late in September.
