PROOF Research’s Greg Hamilton and Sean Murphy Take Top Tough Man Honors at 2020 Mammoth Sniper Challenge

The grueling three-day precision rifle shooting competition brings the best-of-the-best shooters together to test their shooting skills in a mentally and physically challenging environment.


Columbia Falls, Mont. (January 2020) – The Grunt Style Vortex Optics Mammoth Sniper Challenge wrapped up its three-day match at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Jan. 9 – 12, 2020.  PROOF Research’s own Weapons Test Specialist, Greg Hamilton and Nightforce team member, Sean Murphy took top honors in the Tough Man Challenge. Last year the two took first place in the Regular division. This makes two years in a row of team PROOF Research/Nightforce having the highest score.

Started in 2010, the challenge puts two-person teams in a series of shoots in man-made structures and in the natural terrain. The contestants participate in either the Tough Man or the Regular styles, differing in the level of physicality of the event. The Tough Man teams stay in the environment during the three-day challenge and are required to carry everything they will need over 40+ miles.

This year, 66 teams participated in the Tough Man division, including Greg and Sean. Nineteen teams chose the Regular division, which means they were not required to stay in-field overnight. Of the teams that started on Jan. 9, 42 of the Tough Man groups completed and only nine of the Regular. Greg and Sean each shot about 120 rounds of rifle and about 50 of pistol on eleven stages. Their total points were 292 which made them the Tough Man Challenge winners.

As Tough Man team challengers, Greg and Sean carried their full ruck with them throughout the event, which meant that everything they needed to complete the event was on their backs, including guns, ammo, food, and camping equipment. As part of the challenge, not only must participants shoot the various stages, but must complete the challenge in certain time frames. Sean registered his team logged 79,000 steps for a total of 41 miles in three days.

Critical to the success of the challenge is what their competition kit included. Sean explained, “my Conviction was the primary rifle, chambered in 6mm Creedmoor with 110gr. A-Tips and Hornady brass, while Greg had a twin Conviction model rifle with a TL3 action and a pre-fit PROOF .223 carbon barrel, sending 75gr ELD-Ms as the secondary rifle. Both rifles had PROOF carbon fiber composite barrels to save weight. Scopes were Nightforce ATACR 7-35×56 F1s, along with SilencerCo suppressors and MDT CkyePod bipods. Fully kitted, the rifles weighed about 13 pounds, about half of what normal match guns weigh these days.”

PROOF Research carbon fiber barrels are up to 50 percent lighter than traditional steel barrels of similar contour, which Greg and Sean appreciated as they had to move quickly from one shooting stage to another and carry three-days’ worth of gear. Additionally, the carbon fiber wrap makes the barrel extremely resistant to dirt, dings, weather, and all of the gritty environmental conditions the team encountered on the 56,000-acre training grounds at Fort Gordon.

“There’s no doubt, the carbon fiber composite barrels and stocks saved tremendous weight, but also delivered superior accuracy enabling us to move faster and pack smarter with our kit,” Sean concluded.

The TT Modular Medic Insert 30 allows the team medic to convert any backpack to a medic pack with a variety of inserts. Designed to work specifically with the TT Modular Pack 30, but capable of being used to organize other packs, the TT Modular Medic Insert 30 includes two tourniquet holders, two elastic straps with loops, one panel and one panel with elastic loops, and nine accessory bags in different sizes with a transparent side to quickly identify contents. The smaller pouches contain removable dividers and the panel with elastic loops is designed for bandages and accessories. The TT Modular Medic Insert 30 is available in Olive and Coyote for $149.00 (medical supplies not included).

The TT Modular Medic Insert 45 was also designed to be used in the TT Modular Pack 45 but can configure any pack into a medic pack. Its inserts are configured the same as in the TT Modular Medic Insert 30 but slightly larger in size to accommodate the larger TT Modular Pack 45. The new TT TAC Pouch Medic and the TT TAC Pouch Medic Holder are designed to be used together. The TT TAC Pouch Medic is a first aid bag for medical supplies with the main compartment with mesh pockets and internal fixation points to store medical equipment. It can be worn directly on the medic’s belt with a loop. It fits the TT TAC Pouch Medic Holder and MOLLE system and allows the medic to attach the first aid pouch to various types of equipment. The holder also fits the TT TAC Pouch 1 and TT TAC Pouch 5. Both are available in Black or Olive. The TT TAC Pouch Medic retails at $34.95 and the holder at $19.95 (medical supplies not included).

Madrid, January 23, 2020. Indra, one of the leading global technology and consulting companies, has strengthened its position in the radar manufacturing field with the opening of a one-of-a-kind factory in Spain where equipment for both civil and military use will be produced.

“The new Indra radar production facility in San Fernando de Henares represents a clear commitment of the company for the design and production of such systems, in which Indra is one of the global leaders, mostly thanks to the 3D technology for civil as well as military use,” says Jorge Estévez, director of Transportation and Defence Operation at Indra. It comes as no surprise that Indra has been awarded all of the 3D radar tenders by NATO since 2005, and has supplied 40 units in different configurations world-wide: long-range, fixed or non-fixed, medium-range, high-mobility tactical configuration and naval radars. The order book is extensive. Indra radars have the most advanced digital signal processing technologies (Digital Beam Forming) and add improvements to enhance their operational flexibility and reliability throughout their life cycle.

Indra has concentrated the manufacturing of all its radar systems on a single 7000-square -meter factory. Nearly 200 professionals, many of them with a level of experience that is hard to find in Europe, are working together to cover the entire radar manufacturing cycle, from the production of the electronic cards to the actual assembly. Most of these next-generation radars will be exported to countries all over the world.

Jorge Estévez emphasizes the competitiveness and innovation that characterizes the factory: “The capacity of this factory will allow us to absorb the sales growth that we anticipate for the coming years in the domestic and international markets. This factory integrates from the manufacturing processes of highly complex electronic boards to the final tests, and has allowed us to make substantial improvements in the production processes, embodying lean manufacturing and automation elements.”

Military technology that transfers to the civil arena

No factory in Spain – and very few in Europe – can match the diversity of radars with proprietary technology that the San Fernando factory can boast of. The catalogue includes fixed, tactical and mobile radars and also airborne and naval radars, radars for drone detection and components for space exploration. Moreover, innovation projects on Lanza radars are being developed in this new factory, together with Torrejón.

The company started manufacturing radars in the 80’s. Today, Indra is regarded as a world-class supplier, thanks to its proprietary production of cutting-edge radars. The growth outlook in this sector is very positive.

The company is present in five continents thanks to the technological superiority of radars such as the MSSR for air traffic control and the new developments, such as those used in frigates. Radars and radio aids are exported to more than 60 countries: from the United Kingdom to Australia, through Sweden, Denmark, Uruguay, Ecuador, India, Thailand, Azerbaijan and Oman, among others.

Clients in this market are both civil as well as military, which has enabled technology transfer from the former to the latter. Such is the case of the emblematic Lanza 3D radar which, although originally created for military use, is now very popular in the civil field and will soon make a significant technological leap with the new generation of LTR-25 tactical radar for NATO and other European customers. In the civil sector, the main mission of most radar systems is to optimally manage air traffic and to ensure the safety of passengers travelling by air.

One of the most sophisticated Indra radars is designed for spatial surveillance and has its origin in military technology. Another civil application of equipment produced in San Fernando is closely linked to the sustainability and the protection of the environment: the detection of oil spills in hydrocarbon extraction and handling environments using low-range radars.

According to the latest EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard ranking, which has just been published by the European Commission, Indra is one of the Spanish companies and one of the companies of its sector in Europe that invests the most in research and development, with €210 million and a 6.8% of sales invested in 2018 alone. James is the founder and CEO of Tactical Response, the Tennessee-based firearms training company. He’s taken on many roles in the firearm/tactical community, both in the training realm and in the hard-knocks real world.
On the law enforcement side, James has been everything from a Patrolman to a member of Drug Task Forces to Tactical Team Leader to Chief of Police. He worked as a contractor on two Protective Security Details in Baghdad, Iraq during the height of that conflict.
James has been a firearms trainer since 1994 and has taught literally thousands of students, some of whom have put his teaching to the test in real-world confrontations. He’s a certified expert witness on firearms, tactical training and use of force. Several Galco employees have been fortunate enough to attend classes at Tactical Response.
He’s also a professional author, published in magazines such as SWAT, Southern Lawman, Concealed Carry, American Handgunner Special Editions and STUFF. He wrote the foreword for Andy Stanford’s seminal book Surgical Speed Shooting and appeared on its cover. He’s written a book on High Risk Civilian Contracting and has also produced a series of instructional DVDs.

Streamlight Launches TLR-8 and TLR-8 A G Weapon Lights

New Lights Feature Two Rear Switch Position Options; Each Offers Colored Aiming Laser

EAGLEVILLE, PA, January 17, 2020 – Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting and weapon light/laser sighting devices, introduced the TLR-8® A and the TLR-8® A G, featuring red or green aiming lasers, and offering ergonomic rear switch options with either a low or high position to match users’ shooting style. Both lights deliver 500 lumens and feature a rail clamp that attaches and detaches easily from the side of a broad array of compact and full frame weapons.

“These compact, lightweight weapon lights are designed to maximize visibility and targeting capability in a variety of law enforcement, concealed carry, and home defense applications,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “They each feature ambidextrous on/off rear switches with low and high positions to suit user preference. And each comes equipped with an integrated color aiming laser to enable users to readily identify a potential threat before taking any action.”

The TLR-8 A and TLR-8 A G feature a power LED that delivers 5,000 candela and 500 lumens over a beam distance of 140 meters. The TLR-8 A offers a 640-660nm red laser to maximize visibility and long-range targeting capability, while the TLR-8 A G features a 510-520nm “Eye Safe” green laser to improve users’ ability to focus on targets during daylight hours. Both lights can be deployed in Laser-Only mode to keep the gun on target, in LED-Only mode to provide bright, focused light, or in dual mode, which uses both light sources.

The run time for both lights is 1.5 hours in LED-Only, LED and Laser, and strobe modes. In Laser-Only mode, the TLR-8 A provides a run time of 60 hours, while the TLR-8 A G delivers 11 hours. Each light is energized by a single 3 Volt CR2 lithium battery.

Securely fitting to a broad range of weapons, the new TLR lights feature a one-handed, snap on and tighten interface that keeps hands away from gun muzzles when attaching or detaching them. The lights also include a Safe Off feature, locking them so they cannot be turned on accidentally. A key kit is included to securely fit each light to the broadest array of hand guns of any light on the market.

Constructed with 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized finish, the TLR-8 A and TLR-8 A G both weigh 2.64 ounces and measure 2.58 inches in length.

With extensively live-fire tested, impact-resistant construction, the new models feature an IPX7-rated design, making them waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

The lights are packaged as the TLR-8 A FLEX and TLR-8 A G FLEX. Each comes with a High switch mounted on the light, plus an included Low switch. The TLR-8 A FLEX has an MSRP of $367.50, while the TLR-8 A G FLEX has an MSRP of $450.00. Both lights include Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Department of Homeland Security Awards Ammunition Contract to SIG SAUER

NEWINGTON, N.H., (January 17, 2020) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce a contract to supply ammunition to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) for up to $7.5 million.  FLETC is the premier law enforcement training entity operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security with locations throughout the U.S.

SIG SAUER Elite Match Grade rifle cartridges are engineered for precision auto-loading platforms utilizing optimized shell case metallurgy and premium primers, featuring a hollow point bullet and brass casing.  The contract includes: 223REM (77GR) and 308WIN (168GR).

SIG SAUER Elite V-Crown JHP defensive rounds combine perfected material specifications and fine-tuned design innovations, featuring a jacketed hollow point cavity and coated nickel cartridges.  The contract includes:  357MAG (125GR), 357SIG (125GR), 380ACP (90GR), 40 S&W (165GR), 9MM (115GR), and 9MM (147GR).

SIG SAUER Elite Ball FMJ are designed to match SIG V-Crown ballistics for a more seamless transition from training to carry ammunition, featuring a metal jacketed bullet with a lead core and brass cartridges.  The contract includes: 45AUTO (230GR) and 9MM (124GR).

SIG SAUER Law Enforcement Duty Ammo is a defensive round designed specifically for the demands of law enforcement professionals, featuring a jacketed hollow point cavity, coated nickel cartridges, and are sealed and waterproofed.  The contract includes 45 AUTO +P, JHP (230GR).

NSSF Hails Publication of Firearms Export Reform Rules

WASHINGTON — NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, applauds the Trump administration’s posting for public inspection the final rules that modernize the export regulations for sporting and commercial firearms and ammunition products. The formal publication of the final rule is scheduled for Jan. 23. The rules will be implemented 45 days after formal publication.

President Donald Trump’s administration successfully completed the long-promised modernization of the export control regulations that began more than eight years ago under the prior administration, but which was never completed due to domestic gun control reasons.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the firearms and ammunition industry. We salute the Trump administration for modernizing our nation’s outdated Cold War era export controls and putting American manufacturers on an even playing field with their foreign competitors,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs and General Counsel. “This initiative will enable U.S. manufacturers to create more good-paying jobs in America while also helping to strengthen our national security.”

The rules issued today transfer export licensing of sporting and commercial firearms and ammunition products to the Commerce Department from the State Department. This change removes unnecessary and outdated regulations and allows the State to focus its export control resources on those items that give our warfighters a tactical advantage. It makes no sense to treat the commercial sale of hunting or target shooting rifles with the same level of scrutiny as nuclear weapons, tanks and fighter aircraft.

The new rules also eliminate a punitive annual $2,250 registration fee that gunsmiths and small companies who do not manufacture, nor export firearms or ammunition products were forced to pay.

A Girl & A Gun: A Look at 2020

A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League (AG & AG) entered the new decade on the heels of another fantastic year! In 2019, AG & AG membership grew to over 6,500 women in chapters at 190 ranges throughout the country that offer training and camaraderie. In 2019 the league opened 27 new chapters in 19 states. It continues to grow because of the organization’s proven firearms training and leadership programs. No other women’s organization has done more for the grassroots 2nd Amendment movement than AG & AG to bring women into shooting.

The 2019 National Conference Presented by SIG SAUER had a sold-out crowd of 450 women on the range for 3 days training with 70 top-tier instructors. The Fall Festival Presented by SIG SAUER in 2019 had rave reviews from 120 competitors from 27 states, with a ton of social activity, posts, videos, and tags.

The AG & AG executive team were visible leaders throughout 2019. Robyn Sandoval was honored with the 2019 Defender of Liberty Award from the Second Amendment Foundation. She was a speaker at the Gun Rights Policy Conference and was also featured in articles in Guns.com and Guns Magazine. Tatiana Whitlock served as the host of Trigger Time TV and host of Civilian Carry Radio. AG & AG Founder Julianna Crowder was interviewed by a number of media outlets and was seen at the NRA Women’s Leadership Luncheon and the Professional Outdoor Media Association summit.

Looking ahead in 2020, AG & AG will be hosting its 8th Annual National Training Conference at Cameo Shooting Center near Grand Junction, CO. This event will again welcome nearly 600 people on site for a week of training sessions. Topics include shooting fundamentals, advanced marksmanship, concealed carry, vehicle defense, competition, archery, precision rifle, sporting clays, knife defense, gun maintenance, legal topics, and more.

The 2020 Fall Festival will feature the Multigun Challenge, the only all-ladies 3-gun match in the nation. It will also comprise 3-Gun University, 2.5 days of training clinics, and the Multisport Challenge, which introduces competitors to a variety of shooting sports, including action pistol, sporting clays, precision rifle, and cowboy action. Fall Fest will take place at Dead Zero Shooting Park in Spencer, TN.

New in 2020 A Girl & A Gun will host the first-ever all-women’s Sporting Clays Championship. More than 100 women will participate at Powder Creek Shooting Park in Lenexa, KS. Events will include sporting clays, 5-stand, trap, and training clinics for those new to shotgun sports.

A Girl & A Gun also just released the 2020 supplement to its Shooting Journal. The AG & AG Shooting Journal offers a revolutionary program to help the female marksman organize her plans, goals, time, and training. It provides a progressive training program to maximize home dry-fire practice and range time. The 2020 supplement expands the discussion on AG & AG’s Color Track System and provides Confirmation Drills for shooters to give clear indicators of their marksmanship and abilities.

Several training classes for AG & AG leadership are scheduled throughout 2020 to provide advanced-level instructor training. In September, AG & AG will again host the Back the Women in Blue event to provide advanced training for female law enforcement officers from around the country.

AG & AG will continue to raise the bar for firearms training, community building, 2nd Amendment advocacy, and participation in the competitive shooting sports. The league is committed to being the very best for its members, sponsors, and friends.

USSOCOM Completes Safety Certification and Purchase of SIG SAUER MG 338 Machine Guns, Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors

NEWINGTON, N.H., (January 15, 2020) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce the United States Special Operation Command (USSOCOM), working closely with SIG SAUER, has completed a safety certification of the new SIG SAUER MG 338 Machine Gun, SIG SAUER 338 Norma Mag Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors. Following this historic official safety certification, SIG SAUER has completed deliveries of multiple systems, comprised of the MG 338 Machine Guns, 338 Norma Mag Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors – all researched, designed, engineered, and manufactured by SIG SAUER in the U.S.A.


“The safety certification of the complete SIG SAUER MG 338 system and delivery of the system to USSOCOM is historically very significant. For the first time in decades the U.S. Military certified a new machine gun, ammunition, and suppressor at the same time, bringing new innovation, portability, and increased lethality to our ground forces, with all components coming from one company,” began Ron Cohen, President and CEO, SIG SAUER, Inc. “This certification was achieved following the outstanding performance of the complete MG 338 system through the rigors of the extensive function, durability, and safety tests set forth by USSOCOM.”

The SIG MG 338 bridges the gap between the current machine guns currently in use with the U.S. Military. In comparison to the current M240 (7.62x51cal) machine gun, which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 60 years, the SIG MG 338, is noticeably lighter, weighing only 20 pounds, and provides significantly more range and lethality. In comparison to the M2 (.50cal), which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 110 years, the MG 338 is approximately one-quarter the weight, and in a historic first, offers a man-portable solution with similar effective-range. Making this system even more desirable is the new SIG SAUER Next Generation Suppressors which drastically reduces the impact of harmful toxic fumes and signature, making the operator less vulnerable.

The SIG SAUER MG 338 machine gun is a belt-fed, lightweight medium machine gun weighing under 20lbs., chambered in 338 Norma Mag. The MG 338 features a short-stroke gas piston system and a proprietary recoil mitigation system, with a free-floating, quick-change barrel, ambidextrous controls, switchable feed tray, charging handle that can be alternated to either side depending on operator preference, and as a modern, multi-caliber, modular system the new SIG MG 338 is easily convertible to 7.62x51cal.

“We are incredibly proud of this historical accomplishment and honored to have received this safety certification by USSOCOM for the performance of the complete MG 338 system,” concluded Cohen.

INTRODUCING THE NIGHTFORCE WEDGE PRISM

As Nightforce fans continue to push the boundaries of what is possible for target distances, some riflescopes lack the necessary elevation travel. We created the Wedge Prism with extreme long range shooters in mind.
The Wedge Prism is a clip-on accessory that mounts to a forward or continuous MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail to increase the effective elevation travel. It optically shifts the incoming image to the riflescope by a precise elevation value, which directly adds to the available elevation travel within any riflescope. 

 

It provides a repeatable offset of the optical image, yet minimizes the loss of image quality, resolution or clarity. Available as a 50 MOA/14.5 MRAD or 100 MOA/29.1 MRAD variant, shooters can choose an individual unit or combine models to tailor the amount of additional offset needed to reach their target. The quick-detach lever allows for rapid and repeatable installation and removal in the field, and by attaching to a rail prevents additional stresses on the riflescope.

Federal’s New Punch Personal Defense Ammo Delivers a Knockout

Drawing on that knowledge, the company recently set out to design a new self-defense load that would provide excellent overall performance from popular carry guns. The result of this effort is one of the most exciting new line of defensive loads to hit the market in years—Federal’s new Punch ammo.
This new line of ammunition will be on display in Booth No. 14551 at the 2020 SHOT Show, January 21-24 at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. New Federal Premium Punch is scheduled to ship at the end of January 2020.
Punch provides a great option for common self-defense scenario use—where performance through more complex duty barriers, like those in the FBI protocol test, are less likely to be a factor.
“Many personal defenders think, ‘If it works for law enforcement then it’s good for me.’ That is a great guideline and still our ultimate recommendation,” said Laack. “But that may add features not required for everyday carry for everyone.”
Federal saw a need for a reliable, accurate, terminally effective option that doesn’t have to be the top scoring product in duty ammunition test procedures.

Most concealed carry permit holders are less concerned with factors such as barrier penetration through steel, plywood and auto glass and more concerned about choosing a bullet that is engineered from the ground-up to stop an attacker and work effectively in their chosen firearm. And, as the data shows, Punch bullets perform well in the tests that matter most to the average shooter—penetration and expansion through bare gel and heavy clothing.
