The NDIA Undersea Warfare Division is now accepting abstract submissions for its Spring virtual conference, which is scheduled to take place from March 23 – 24, 2021. Each abstract must be UNCLASSIFIED and cleared for public release with unlimited distribution (Distribution A). Each abstract should fit into one of the following Technical Sessions:

Submission Guidelines

Individuals are required to submit a concise abstract of 5,000 characters or less by Friday, January 29, 2021, by 5:00 pm EST. Authors will be notified of whether their abstract has been accepted by early February. Due to this conference being virtual, all authors of accepted abstracts will need to submit a pre-recorded unclassified video for on-demand content no later than February 22, 2021.

PROOF Research’s Greg Hamilton and Sean Murphy Repeat Top Tough Man Honors at 2021 Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Hamilton and Murphy take 1st place for the second year in a row at the elite precision rifle shooting competition, proving once again, the benefits of a PROOF Research® composite barrel. 

Columbia Falls, Mont. (January 2021) – PROOF Research®’s Weapons Test Specialist, Greg Hamilton, and Nightforce team member, Sean Murphy, repeated last year’s top honors in the Tough Man Challenge at the Grunt Style Vortex Optics Mammoth Sniper Challenge, held at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Jan. 7-10, 2021. By Dec. 2020, 104 teams had registered for the elite event and by the second day of the four-day event, only 70 teams remained. This marks two years in a row the team takes home top honors in the Tough Man Division and three years in a row they finish with the highest overall score.

The PROOF Research/Nightforce team competed in the Tough Man Division of the Mammoth Sniper Challenge in which Greg and Sean had to cover over 30 miles of timed rucks in three days carrying everything they needed for shooting, eating, clothing changes, and camp gear. The stages were all shot blind, with limited information provided on the course of fire to be shot. Each of the stages tested a variety of field shooting skills for individuals, as well as how the team worked together to maximize points on a given stage. They each shot about 100 rounds of rifle and 50 or so pistol on 11 stages. The field was extremely competitive this year, and the points race came down to the final few stages to determine the winner.

Using a PROOF Research high-fiber content, cut-rifled composite competition barrel, the team was confident that no matter the environmental conditions or challenges, their rifles’ accuracy never wavered. With fully kitted rifles weighing around 13 lbs., the lightweight PROOF barrels were an added benefit to lightening their load during their grueling timed rucks between stations.

Sean shot a PROOF Research Conviction rifle chambered in 6mm Creedmoor shooting 110gr A-Tips while Greg had another PROOF Conviction in .223 sending 75gr ELD-Ms as the secondary rifle. Scopes were Nightforce ATACR 7-35×56 F1s, along with SilencerCo suppressors and MDT CkyePod bipods. This year, Sean and Greg, were one of three teams selected to be followed by a camera crew through the event for a mini-series to air in the spring of 2021 (stay tuned!).

HENSOLDT signs cooperation agreement with Fraunhofer IOSB for laser development

Taufkirchen, Germany, 25 January 2021 – HENSOLDT and Fraunhofer IOSB in Ettlingen, Germany, have entered into a cooperation agreement with the aim of developing future-proof, robust and powerful lasers for laser-based countermeasures for self-protection systems and reconnaissance purposes.

“We made a very conscious decision to go with the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) in Ettlingen and their Laser Technology Department,” explained Countermeasures Product Manager Harald Knapp, “as their expertise in the laser field and their ambitious laser roadmap are the best fit for our product portfolio. The institute has an excellent reputation in our industry.”

The cooperation between HENSOLDT and the Fraunhofer Institute includes the transfer of laser technology to Oberkochen. The staff in Oberkochen have a unique reputation worldwide in the development of military lasers and will drive miniaturization forward. At the Taufkirchen site, HENSOLDT is developing demonstrators in the area of self-protection land vehicles for several promising applications in which this laser technology could be used. The integration of the first laser demonstrator in IR countermeasures is planned for this year. Further projects will follow.

“With laser technology, we are advancing into a new wavelength range and higher power classes, which will enable us to develop various applications and novel products in the land, sea and air sectors. Our German customer is showing great interest in these product developments. A concrete selection decision has already been made for a first application, and we are in promising dialogue for two others,” said Dr Oliver Rudow, Program Area Manager Self-Protection Land Vehicles.

SPIKE firing (1)Tel Aviv , January 25, 2021 – The SAF (Slovenian Armed Forces) has completed a successful firing of Rafael’s SPIKE LR missiles in a demonstration that took place in Slovenia, December 2020, in front of representatives of the Ministry of Defence and members of the Slovenian Armed Forces.

The successful live demo included firings of the 12.7mm gun and SPIKE LR missile from the KONGSBERG PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Station mounted on JLTV platform. The demo displayed the enhanced capabilities of the SPIKE launcher, as a force multiplier for the mobilized land forces, enabling precision strike against armored targets with improved precision at extended ranges and beyond-line-of-sight.

During the demonstration, the Slovenian army also fired SPIKE missiles using the new dismounted digital SPIKE launcher ICLU, as part of ongoing transition in all SPIKE Missile user nations to new digital NCW-ready launchers and to 5th generation SPIKE LR2 missiles.

Similarly to all other SPIKE launchers, the integration of the SPIKE LR missile to the KONGSBERG PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Station includes a provision for SPIKE LR2, a fifth-generation multipurpose missile, equipped with improved engagement ranges of up to 5.5 km, with a reduced weight (13.4 kg), enhanced lethality, advanced target recognition and tracking, and a new third-party target allocation (network-enabled) enhancement with an embedded inertial measurement unit (IMU) assembly.

In October 2018, the Slovenia Ministry of Defense signed an inter-governmental Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) with the U.S. Government for the purchase of 38 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) manufactured by Oshkosh Defense. Slovenia Armed Forces will receive the JLTVs in early 2021. Procurement of the JLTV supports the fulfillment of NATO’s capability goals for the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) and greatly increases SAF interoperability with US and regional allies currently operating JLTV. All 38  JLTV platforms will be equipped with Protector RWS.

ARLINGTON, VA – The White House announced this morning the pending release of an executive order strengthening provisions of the Buy America and Buy American statutes. The National Defense Industrial Association endorses the stated goals of supporting American manufacturing capabilities and technology, strengthening our national security and giving American companies and their workforces the tools needed to compete and win globally.
Establishing a senior leader in the Executive Office of the President, instituting cross-agency reviews and consideration of service industries in addition to manufacturing are good first steps.
NDIA looks forward to reading details of the executive order later today and to working with the administration on how these efforts can best bear fruit for the defense industrial base and, ultimately, for our warfighters.

On Jan. 6, 2021, The Mentors Radio host, Tom Loarie, spoke with Mike Noell, former Navy SEAL, former founder and CEO of BLACKHAWK!, and current founder and CEO of SENTRY Products Group, LLC, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Host Tom started right off by asking Mike about his “Aha!” business moment. Mike’s moment came while as a Navy SEAL during the first Gulf War in 1991. His SEAL unit was teamed up with Marines on a mission of deep reconnaissance and to provide the Kurdish people with humanitarian relief at the southern border of Turkey during the no-fly initiative established by the US. Wearing loaded packs weighing over 100 lbs., he and his team inserted via helicopters 60 kilometers into Northern Iraq. As fate would have it, the strap on Mike’s backpack broke and took him down with the fallout. A Bouncing Betty mine greeted him, just inches from where he fell. What could have been a catastrophe to him and his team, became Mike’s “come to Jesus” moment where he decided that if he got out of there alive, he would create gear that would never fail a warfighter. This would be the birth of BLACKHAWK!

For many in the military, and specifically the special operations groups, the BLACKHAWK! brand was the epitome tactical gear brand in the world for over a decade and was synonymous with superior mission-designed products. In April of 2010, the company was purchased by ATK. The resounding success of the BLACKHAWK! brand and eventual sale, left many in the industry assuming Mike Noell had successfully retired from the highly competitive world of designing and manufacturing gear.

Mike’s history as a competitive athlete (swimming) and competitive sailor, combined with his service as a Navy SEAL prepared him for a high-octane life, so retirement was not an option. This year marks the fifth year of SENTRY Products Group and the year Mike believes the brand will show significant growth in the marketplace, through their combined efforts of product launches, marketing, and sales. SENTRY Products Group is just the latest entrepreneurial passion of Mike and his team of former BLACKHAWK! executives to showcase and bring a variety of products to the market for law enforcement, military, security, and outdoor communities.

His years as a Navy SEAL had provided Mike with some of the critical skills he would take into the business world, such as to never quit, that failure is not an option, and to not try, but do. Combined with his father’s experience as a problem solver and entrepreneur, Mike’s initial endeavor into the cut and sew business for his military pals was not easy. “We started in a garage. All the gear that our guys were using was old and out of date with all the new electronics that they started to carry in the field. They needed new pouches and load-bearing systems. It was a time of transitioning out of the Vietnam era and into today where our special operators and specifically the Navy SEALS needed to accomplish their missions better and faster, and gear was critical to their success.”

BLACKHAWK! grew and over the years, Mike brought on a team of experts in their chosen fields that took the brand to the very top of its category in brand awareness, customer loyalty, and sales figures. After over a decade, Mike realized that to continue the rapid growth and technologies required to keep the company at the top spot, a financial partner was essential. Instead of a partner, the company was sold and Mike quietly went into a semi-retirement state.

“I didn’t have a good work-life balance and running a company like BLACKHAWK! was a 24/7 job. I took some time with my family and to regroup,” Mike reflected when asked by the host how he brought balance into his life. “My passion is in helping those on the line by providing them with the tools they need to make their missions successful, so after some time for reflection, I jumped back into the business world with SENTRY Products Group. At SENTRY, I now have the A-team from BLACKHAWK!, and over the past five years we have made four acquisitions, brought back our production facilities, and have some great new and innovative products lined up for release.”

EOTECH® Awarded Kansas Highway Patrol Optics Contract

Tampa Bay is a “No Drone Zone” During Super Bowl LV

TAMPA, Fla., – Raymond James Stadium in Tampa is a “No Drone Zone” for Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7, 2021. Drones also are prohibited around the Tampa Riverwalk for the NFL Super Bowl Experience during the days leading up to the event.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will establish a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) on game day that will prohibit drones within a 30-nautical-mile radius of the stadium up to 18,000 feet in altitude. The TFR will be in place from 5:30 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST.

Drones are also prohibited for one nautical mile around Raymond James Stadium on February 7 from 10 a.m. until the TFR for the game takes effect. Further details are available in the drone TFR (PDF).

The FAA will restrict drone flights for roughly two nautical miles around Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park up to an altitude of 2,000 feet from January 29 to February 6 during event hours.

Pilots and drone operators who enter the TFRs without permission could face civil penalties that exceed $30,000 and potential criminal prosecution for flying drones in the TFR.

ARLINGTON, VA – The following is a statement from Arnold Punaro, chairman of the board of the National Defense Industrial Association, on Jack London, executive chairman of CACI International Inc., who died Jan. 18 at age 83.
“It is hard to imagine the federal technologies industry without Jack London. It is an industry he helped create. CACI was just 10 years old when Jack joined in 1972, and anyone who knows CACI knew Jack London, and vice versa.
“Under Jack’s leadership, CACI made nearly 80 acquisitions that brought the company into homeland security, intelligence and national defense. CACI is an integral part of everything we do in government, and it will be a large part of Jack’s legacy.
“I was privileged to work with Jack, both in the business world and in his philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife Jennifer were mainstays in supporting our troops and their families. His Navy service was exemplary. His books on leadership and character are highly impactful and he was respected throughout our industry for his integrity. He was a good friend and mentor to all of us who followed his leadership as one of the icons in our field. We not only have lost a pillar in federal IT; I have lost a dear friend. My sincere condolences to Jennifer and Jack’s family as well as the CACI family.”

3 SCOTUS justices skip Biden inauguration with COVID concerns - Los Angeles TimesWe’ve made it through another week, and once more lived through the peaceful transition of power. Whether you  agree or disagree with President Joseph R Biden Jr. please extend him the courtesy and respect that his Office commands. The morons that decided to mount an assault on the U.S. Capitol are just that, morons!

A number of years a go, I was in Washington D.C. for a couple of meetings; I had some time on may hands so I set out to pick up some cigars at a shop, which as I recall was on  K or M street. As I walked back to my hotel, I ran into then Senator Joe Biden, I smiled at him and asked him if he was out for a walk. He responded with a big smile and said “No, I have to pick up my dry-cleaning.” Do I agree with some of his policies as expressed in his recent non-COVID executive orders, absolutely not; however, I will respect the man and the Office. You should too!

It’s Friday and time to think about the weekend and our weekly shoot the shit. For readers unfamiliar with a shoot the shit, it’s a social interaction during which any topic can be discussed. Participants don’t need to know anything about the subject, they are free to make any unsupported comments, use uncensured profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject.

A shoot the shit on a weekly basis is more effective than paying $150+ per hour  to a jackass who majored in psychology so they could understand themselves . You maybe be better off visiting your local Santero if you are Latino.

Voodoo for example works only on people that believes it works and they must also know that a curse has been placed on them. It triggers what Sigmund Freud describes as  somatic compliance. Now, note that Freud was too a jackass. The only thing that Freud had going for him was that he was a prolific writer.

This week’s shoot the shit

During the Democrat Primary, I directed a question at Mayor Pete Buttigieg via Twitter, to determine if he would support legislation that would require a transgender individual to disclose their orientation prior to engaging in an intimacy with a heterosexual, I never got a response which was disappointing. Before going any further, as a former San Franciscan, I support LGBTQ+ – rights, marriage, et. al. Some of the coolest people I know are from that community.

Biden picks transgender woman Rachel Levine as assistant health secretary

The picture on the right is that of Dr. Rachel Levin. Dr. Levin is an openly transgender public official. She has been Pennsylvania Secretary of Health since 2017.  She is a Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Levin was recently picked by the Biden Administration to be the Assistant Secretary of Health.

Now, as a former member of the U.S. Navy, I know how difficult long submerged deployments can be. We used to pull into port after 6 moths at sea with 6 months worth of pay in our pocket, so it was easy to overdo a good thing. We call that steaming. When you’re steaming, you do things like start tonnage contests. This is an event in which participants offer to engage in intimacies with as many women as possible. Those who accumulated the highest aggregate weight at the end of the contest would be declared the winner.

With that kind of pressure and one too many Jack Daniels, it’s quite possible that you could unknowingly wake up next to a transgender individual, so having legislation that would require disclosure is important. I can understand that If you find yourself behind in  accumulated tonnage, you may still proceed with such an intimacy , but at least you know what you’re getting in to.

On a more serious note…

There’s a great deal of misinformation being passed on social media about the COVID 19 mutations. Two mutations have been identified; the U.K. version, currently in the United States and the African version currently being studied. Let’s shed some light on mutations.

A virus is often discussed as something that’s living. A virus is not a living organism, biologist could not classify it as living and couldn’t classify it as nonliving so they created a special classification. Mutations in the human cells are generally triggered by free radicals (polarized molecule) or ionizing radiation. In general, a human cell mutation is 99.9% lethal to the cell. The .1% that survive will generally become cancers. The COVID virus is an rna virus so it needs a host cell to replicate;  it’s that replication process, over a long period of time, that brings about the viral mutation but unlike the human cell a viral mutation is not lethal to the virus, it simply becomes a viral mutant, this is the reason you need an influenza vaccine every year.

In the case of COVID, a mutation must result in a change to the spike protein before the current vaccines become ineffective. Fortunately the SARS-CoV-2 virus seems to have a similar mechanism for validating its genetic material like the human cell which makes COVID mutations occur at a slower rate.

What’s the key to success? Get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, so it’s balls to the wall for vaccines! Get yours ASAP.

Several new product line extensions in Hydra-Shok Deep, Punch, Syntech Range and more will be manufactured and delivered to dealers throughout the year. New-for-2021 product launch highlights include:
Hydra-Shok Deep in 380 Auto and 38 Special – These loads unlock the potential of smaller cartridges. They utilize Hydra-Shok Deep’s robust center post and compact core to consistently penetrate beyond the FBI-recommended 12-inch minimum through bare gel and heavy clothing.
Punch in 22 LR and 10mm Auto – Punch 22 LR uses a deep-penetrating bullet that makes the popular rimfire cartridge a viable self-defense option, while the 10mm Auto load’s jacketed hollow point produces the best expansion and penetration in the category.
Swift A-Frame JHP in 327 Federal Magnum and 10mm Auto – The A-Frame Jacketed Hollow Point bullet has a bonded front half which expands consistently across a broad velocity range, while the back half remains intact for deep penetration. This bullet is ideal for hunting with handguns.
