Long Range Fundamentals from Ballistic: Ballistic Coefficient, Caliber Selection and MOA

Gainesville, GA (June 8, 2021) As with most technical pursuits, long-range shooting has a good number of basic terms a shooter needs to know on their way to being a top shot. These terms include:
Ballistic Coefficient – According to Wikipedia, “the ballistic coefficient (BC) of a body is a measure of its ability to overcome air resistance in flight.” Less air resistance equals less drag, and less drag means better performance from a “body,” in this case, a bullet.
BC is denoted numerically, and the higher the BC number, the easier and more efficiently the bullet passes through the air. BC is determined by several factors, including the shape or design of the bullet, its weight and the diameter. Long-range shooters want bullets with a high BC to retain speed longer, drop less and be less affected by wind. 
For example, the Hornady ELD Match round in 6.5 Creedmoor, loaded with Hornady’s sleek, 140-grain bullet, has a very high BC rated at .646. Meantime, the Hornady 30-30 Interlock American Whitetail hunting round, loaded with a round-nose 150-grain bullet, has a BC of .186.
Guess which is the better choice for banging steel at 1,000 yards?
Caliber Selection — Long-range shooters use a variety of calibers, and within each caliber, there are many, many loads available. And each specific load will have its unique bullet weight, BC, and muzzle velocity.    So how does a new shooter know which caliber and cartridge might be best for their particular long-range endeavors?   The smart shooter will use Ballistic and its huge load library to make that decision. Ballistic contains information on over 5,000 projectiles, factory loads, and military loads, plus performance data points (like BC’s) from leading manufacturers and military and performance testing.   Using Ballistic, plug in the various calibers and cartridge loads within the calibers under consideration, the distances at which they will be used, and the anticipated environmental conditions. Ballistic will calculate all the data needed to make the best load choice.   MOA – MOA stands for “minute of angle.” It is an angular measurement used in rifle scope adjustment values.
Think of a circle cut into 60 equal slices, and each slice equals one minute of angle. At 100 yards, each individual minute equals 1.047 inches. Let’s say a rifle is hitting the center of the bullseye at 100 yards. If the elevation control on the scope moved up one full MOA, the bullet should now strike 1.047 inches higher. Move the windage control one full MOA to the right, and the bullet should hit 1.047 inches to the right.
Angles work proportionally, so at 200 yards, 1 MOA is 2.054 inches. At 1000 yards, that 1 MOA is 10.47 inches.
Now, go back to the 100 yards standard. Most rifle scopes have elevation and windage adjustments set at either .5 or .25 MOA per click. So, the shooter takes three shots at 100 yards to zero the scope and rifle, and the three bullets all hit two inches low and a half-inch to the left. With a .5 MOA scope, a bullseye hit will require the shooter to give the elevation control 4 clicks up (.5×4 = 2 inches) and 1 click to the right (.5×1 = .5 inch).
MOA is not the same as MILs or Mil-RADs, which are also angular measurements used in some scopes but perform their measurement on a different scale.

Team Federal’s Tim Herron Having Successful Season, Wins Major USPSA Match

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 8, 2021 –  With shooting competitions for 2021 having gotten nearly back to normal after a year-long hiatus, Team Federal shooter Tim Herron has had a fantastic year so far in Single Stack division. He recently claimed a major win when he grabbed the top spot at the USPSA Northern Arizona Classic, held in Prescott, Arizona, with a lead of more than 17 percentage points.

“Tim is one of those shooters who has a legitimate chance to win any match he enters,” said Federal Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “The Northern Arizona Classic is a major USPSA match and always has a stacked field of competitors. To beat the rest of the shooters in his division by nearly 18 percent is a huge accomplishment. We’re proud to celebrate this win with Tim.”

“The stages at Northern Arizona Classic were spectacular with many options and multiple ways to execute your stage plans,” Herron said. “Shooting an 8-round 1911 on many of these courses of fire really challenged many in Single Stack division and we had to figure out how to efficiently shoot the stages.”

In Arizona, Herron was running a Nighthawk Custom 1911 loaded with 230-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle FMJ ammunition.

“In a major competition like this one, you can literally lose the match with just one gun malfunction,” Spradling said. “Your equipment, including your ammo, has to run without fail every time. Tim knows he can depend on Federal ammo to get the job done and we’re always honored to have such a fierce competitor showing the community how well our products perform.”

“I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Federal Ammunition for their continued support of my efforts, both in competition, and in my profession as a firearms instructor and educator,” Herron said. 

Earlier in the season, Herron took 10th place overall in Single Stack division at the 2021 USPSA LoCap Nationals in Talladega, Alabama. For that match, his pistol was loaded with 220-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle Syntech ammunition.

“Talladega was my first match of the season and I feel good about the finish I had. It was significant and also solidifies my place to compete in the ‘Super Squad’ again next year,” Herron said.

Video Series Follows Hunter on Quest for all Four Turkey U.S. Subspecies

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – June 8, 2021 – Bushnell®, an industry leader in performance optics, has officially wrapped up its video series, The Grand Slam Pursuit, as it documented the quest of employee Jarrod Nichols’ attempt to complete the coveted turkey slam this spring. As part of the video series, Bushnell has released six episodes on YouTube that highlighted Nichols’ experience as he traveled from Florida to the Rockies in search of spring gobblers.

Viewers of the series can join along as Jarrod Nichols, a member of the Bushnell product team, hunts across the country to complete his wild turkey Grand Slam. In his pursuit, Nichols first traveled to Ft. Myers, Florida, with Michael Waddell of Bone Collector to hunt Osceola turkeys. Next, he headed to Calhoun City, Mississippi, to hunt Eastern turkeys with Phillip Culpepper of Hunt Club before heading to Texas to hunt Rio Grande turkeys with Mike Stroff of Savage Outdoors & The One. Nichols concluded his journey in Montana as he searched for Merriam’s turkeys with Realtree’s David Blanton.

During his multi-state hunt, Nichols’ opted to use the new Bushnell RXS250 red dot sight, Bone Collector 850 laser rangefinder, and Bone Collector Engage X binoculars. He also used Federal Premium ammunition and Primos game calls and decoys on his hunts as well as a wide variety of other products that were graciously provided by notable industry brands.

The Grand Slam Pursuit can also be followed on Bushnell.com, where Nichols himself writes about each hunting experience in a short blog post. To officially achieve a Grand Slam, hunters must register individual harvests with the NWTF, which records all wild turkeys currently or previously registered to determine who has achieved various slams. Hunters who officially record their slam with the NWTF receive a certificate and pin, as well as have their name added to the official list of slam achievers on NWTF.org.

Galco Full Grain Premium Leather Holsters are made exclusively from the hides of steers raised and grown in the United States, and/or tanned in the United States. Our leather is vegetable tanned with an environmentally friendly process using only non-hazardous natural organic bark materials, unlike other tanning methods that use heavy metals.
Our tanners use the traditional pit tanning method, and the close working relationship we have with them ensures Galco receives the very best of this finite natural resource. Our uncorrected full grain prime back cuts are inspected several times in the tannery and in our facility. All of our hides are of the highest “Number One” grade out of seven possible grades, which guarantees that Galco premium holsters are cut from the top 2% of vegetable-tanned U.S. steer hides.
Our world famous tan color is achieved through old-world techniques mastered by our craftsmen through experience with millions of holsters over five decades. Each tan holster receives four to six hand-rubbed applications of oil specially formulated by Galco to preserve the leather’s structural integrity and to enhance its natural visual qualities. Each piece responds a little differently to oil, and our craftsmen give every tan holster the individual attention required to bring out its optimum color and luminosity, highlighting the peaks and valleys of the hand-molded contours.
Galco’s other holster colors are produced by careful application of aniline dye, rather than by coating with paint or heavily pigmented dye. Aniline dyes penetrate the grain of the leather, imparting deep, permanent, transparent hues that resist abrasion without obscuring the natural variegations characteristic of unpainted leather which make every single item truly unique. Finally, every Galco holster receives a clear surface finish that helps repel dirt, grime, and the adverse effects of moisture and perspiration.
The extra care and craftsmanship put into the tanning and finishing processes enable the leather in Galco products to develop a rich patina with years of human contact, aging like a fine wine.

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 7, 2021 – Sponsored competitive shooter Tucker Schmidt takes home two top trophies at the Pigg River Precision H.A.M. PRS Match, June 5-6, in Rocky Mount, Virginia shooting Federal Premium Gold Medal rifle ammunition. The match had 160 registered shooters with 20 hard courses of fire. Tucker took home the 1st place Open Division and the Top Pro trophy shooting 6mm Creedmoor handloads using Federal Premium Gold Medal primers (GM205M) and powered by Alliant Powder Reloder 16.

CCI Sponsored Shooter Grant Kunkel Has Great Showing at Area 3 Steel Challenge

LEWISTON, Idaho – June 4, 2021 – CCI-sponsored shooter Grant Kunkel made an impressive showing at the 2021 Area 3 Steel Challenge Championship, held in De Soto, Kansas, bringing home three first place titles and won the Rifle Master award.
The 20-year-old Kunkel placed high overall and took the top spot in the Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC), Open, and Rimfire Rifle Optics (RFRO) divisions. He won second place in the Rimfire Pistol Optics (RFPO) division and used CCI Mini-Mags for both rimfire events. Kunkel also won the Rifle Master award, given to the competitor with the lowest aggregate time from two completed rifle divisions.
“Grant is one of the nicest, most humble people you’ll ever meet, but he’s a fierce competitor. He works hard every day to be the best in the sport and his efforts are paying off this year,” said CCI Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “CCI would like to congratulate Grant on another fantastic match. We’re proud to have him represent our brand.”
“I had a rough start on Friday, and I didn’t shoot too well,” Kunkel said. “But on Saturday, I was able to bear down and regain my focus. I got back on track, and I shot great on many of the final stages with CCI Mini-Mag. On the final day of the three-day event, I also shot a new personal best in PCC to win first place.”

Remembering D-Day

June 6th, 1944 may not be as recognizable to some as many other dates in American history, but its significance as “D-Day” cannot be overstated.

Operation Overlord was the official codename designated for the invasion of the beaches at Normandy at the height of WWII. It was the largest amphibious assault in history and was so important that Gen. Eisenhower threatened to quit over a disagreement about the bombing campaigns prior to launch.

In preparation for the invasion, Allied Forces carried outside information campaigns which included phony radio broadcasts, double agents, and an inflatable army “commanded” by General Patton himself.

More than 150,000 soldiers stormed 5 sections of beaches with estimates of Allied casualties numbering between 4,000 and 10,000 dead. For those who survived, and for those who perished, we honor the bravery and dedication it took to take part in what Eisenhower called a “great and noble undertaking.”

Mark Lewis: Bigger budgets show priority for emerging defense technologies

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – The $112 billion request – one of the largest ever – for research, development, test and evaluation in the Defense Department fiscal year 2022 budget request is a positive step toward investing in critical emerging technologies, said Dr. Mark Lewis, executive director of the Emerging Technologies Institute of the National Defense Industrial Association, in a June 3 statement.
ETI applauds the increase, about 5% more than the FY 2021 enacted amount. Of particular note, the FY 2022 budget includes $3.8 billion to field hypersonic weapons on air, land and sea platforms. This expanded commitment to hypersonics is “absolutely critical to our national defense,” Lewis said.
“Put simply, every time we war-gamed future peer conflicts without a U.S. hypersonics capability, we lost,” Lewis said. “Given the incredible pace of development and deployment in Russia, and especially China, hypersonic systems are an area where we dare not continue to fall behind.”
Microelectronics, a critical component for weapons platforms, fared reasonably well in the budget request at $2.3 billion. Another highlight is a Defense Production Act request of $341 million to partner with U.S. companies to strengthen the defense industrial base and bring to the United States critical supply chains for microelectronics and rare earth metals.

Lexington, Ken. (June 2021) – GALLS, LLC®, the leading distributor of uniforms and equipment to public safety agencies, and private label products, proudly commend Point Blank Enterprises, Inc., a preferred vendor partner, for receiving notification of an “Officer Save” in Georgetown, Kentucky on March 5, 2021.

On March 5th, Georgetown police received a call in regards to a disturbance at an apartment complex. Officer Michael Johnson was the first officer to arrive on the scene. Witnesses informed the officer that the suspect was throwing canned goods at other residents. Officer Johnson knocked on the suspect’s door. The door immediately opened and the 24-year old suspect stabbed the officer just inches from his heart, before running back into his apartment.

The knife tore through Officer Johnson’s shirt, went through the vest carrier, and was stopped by the armor plate. The suspect eventually gave up and was taken into custody.

Just two days before the incident, the Georgetown officers were issued the vests made by Point Blank and provided by GALLS.

“It sends chills down my spine every time I talk about it because the timing was perfect,” Captain Josh Nash of the Georgetown Police stated in response to the arrival of the armor plates.

“The Georgetown Police Officer Save case is just one example of how serious we at GALLS take serving our customers,” Mike Fadden, CEO of GALLS, explained. “Every order is carefully audited and reviewed before shipping to ensure the correct product is getting to our first responders. Orders are then expedited because we know that any product could be the one critical piece that saves an officer’s life. Our team at GALLS is grateful that Officer Johnson avoided any injury and we thank him for his service.”

NEWTOWN, Conn. (June 2, 2021)— In observance of National Safety Month, following a year of record-breaking firearm sales, NSSF® and Project ChildSafe® urge new and existing gun owners nationwide to prioritize safe firearm storage — and are providing the resources to do so.

In 2020, 21 million FBI background checks were conducted for firearm sales — a record number that makes reminders about responsible storage timely. NSSF encourages first-time gun owners to ensure they have safe storage devices to account for their new firearms and learn about firearm safety best practices. Project ChildSafe provides a vast library of resources — including a host of new materials developed this year — to help gun owners determine the best method to prevent unauthorized access to firearms in order to keep their homes and communities safe.

“Every year, National Safety Month is an opportunity to remind gun owners that their most important responsibility is to store their firearms securely when not in use,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF’s President and CEO. “We know that there has been a significant increase in the number of new gun owners in the past year, and that they are looking for guidance on storing firearms responsibly. We’ve worked hard to give them the resources they need to secure their firearms to help prevent accidents.”

In the past year, Project ChildSafe updated its resource library with an emphasis on providing information to first-time gun owners, those who may be reevaluating their firearm storage practices and parents whose children were likely home more than ever while schools and other activities were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Project ChildSafe also partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to develop a joint resource on teen mental health and firearm safety — recognizing that the challenges of 2020 made it more important than ever to have discussions on preventing unauthorized access to firearms for youth facing mental health challenges.

“The past year, more than ever, showed us the importance of putting firearm safety first in our homes,” Bartozzi said. “As kids spent countless hours at home, we helped parents learn more about youth mental health and storage options such as lock boxes and safes to prevent unauthorized access to firearms when they’re not in use.”

Huk Launches New Environment-Friendly Waypoint Collection

There is still time to register for Episodes III and IV of the virtual FAA Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Symposium.

The theme for this year’s event is “Above and Beyond” and it will take place on June 9-10, 2021 and Sept. 14-15, 2021. This is a unique opportunity to have your drone questions answered from leaders in the industry, who will discuss future technologies and regulations that support the safe integration of drones into the national airspace system.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) are co-hosting the symposium. Each episode will feature keynote presentations, expert panels, informational sessions with live Q&A, roundtable discussions and one-on-one meetings with experts from the FAA UAS Support Center. New Remington 700 Bolt Opener From Fix It Sticks

Chicago, IL- Fix It Sticks, the industry innovator of modular firearms maintenance tools and torque limiters has introduced an exciting new tool bit, the Remington 700 Bolt Opener.  This new tool allows quick, safe and effortless removal of the firing pin assembly from the bolt of Remington 700s, Remington 700 clones and rifles with this style of bolt shroud and firing pin assembly.  Like all Fix It Sticks tools, the Remington 700 Bolt Opener is extremely compact, making it easy to carry in any Fix It Sticks took kit or range bag.

Using the Remington 700 Bolt Opener is intuitive and easy. With the bolt removed from the rifle, place the back of the Remington 700 bolt through the tool so the polymer insert is contacting the bolt shroud, engage the firing pin with the firing pin catch at the bottom of the tool, then simply retract the firing pin to with a “bottle opening” action.  With the spring pressure now off the bolt body, simply unscrew the firing pin assembly.  Reverse the procedure to reinstall the firing pin.
