Bushnell Unveils New Elite Tactical DMR3 and XRS3 Riflescopes

New Riflescopes Deliver Class-Leading Performance with a Propriety Reticle

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – August 3, 2020 – Bushnell®, an industry leader in performance optics, has announced the introduction of two new Elite Tactical riflescopes – the DMR3 3.5-21×50 FFP and the XRS3 6-36×56 FFP. Tailored to meet the demands of law enforcement and military professionals as well as long-range and precision rimfire competitions, the new Elite Tactical DMR3 delivers precision to 1,000 yards and beyond in a lightweight, compact package. For those seeking extreme long-range capabilities, including military shooters and ELR competitors, the XRS3 offers the highest magnification in the Elite Tactical family along with superior tracking and reliability.
Featuring the most advanced Elite Tactical optical system ever, both the DMR3 and XRS3 come with a high magnification ED Prime objective, as well as fully multi-coated elements, EXO Barrier™ protection and a new reticle element coating. The new coating pushes the limits of the ultrawideband coating system by increasing light transmission by nearly 2% over previous designs. The culmination of these improvements deliver state-of-the-art optical performance in an already proven, durable and repeatable package.
In addition, these scopes feature a new “G” series reticle designed in conjunction with G.A. Precision. Based on the G3 reticle, the new G4P design features a floating dot center POA, floating holdover dots, refined line widths, quick acquisition bars for low magnification settings, and a more open reticle space above the horizontal stadia.
“The new Elite Tactical DMR3 is utterly reliable, tracks perfectly has a huge eye box and the field of view is everything you need,” said George Gardner, Founder of GA Precision and Team Captain for Elite Tactical. “With the etched glass and updated G4P reticle, it’s about as perfect as it can get. I have never had one fail me in a match.”
Each scope boasts a multi-position ThrowHammer™ magnification lever, allowing a shooter to accommodate their particular rifle without concern of manipulation interference. Additional features include Rev-limiter™ Zero Stop elevation turret, locking windage target turret, and a removable sunshade. The DMR3 riflescope shortens the minimum parallax setting over the DMRII Pro from 50 to 25 yards while the all-new XRS3 has a minimum parallax setting of 50 yards and a D-Lok locking diopter.
“The XRS3 has a lot more with 36 power and a 56mm objective, but it still delivers a sharp crisp image at every magnification from the bottom to the top,” said Bryan Sikes, Elite Tactical pro. “What you are really getting is every benefit of the DRM3 in a more magnified package.”
The XRS3 features 29 MIL elevation travel and 15 MIL windage travel, as well as an (18ft @ 100yd) field of view on 6X power and a (3ft @ 100yd) field of view on 36X power. The scope is 14.9 inches long and weighs in at 39 ounces.
The DMR3 features 32 MIL elevation travel and 20 MIL windage travel, as well as a (25ft @ 100yd) field of view on 3.5X power and a (5ft @ 100yd) field of view on 21X power. The scope is 13.2 inches long and weighs in at 35.5 ounces.
Built to last, both scopes are IP67 rated against water and dust, argon purged to reduce fogging, and built from a single-piece of aircraft-grade 34mm aluminum main-tube. Should Your Magnifier Include Ranging Stadia?

First came the red dot and reflex sights, both of these technologies vastly improved the accuracy and speed of target acquisition and engagement. Soon, operators determined they needed a way to add magnification to extend their range of engagement. The industry responded introducing 3X, 4X and 6X magnifiers . The magnifier sits behind the red dot sight and provides magnification. In use, the operator still sees the red dot but the target is now magnified. That’s all well and good but what is your target range, how much holdover do you use? I’ve used magnified red dot aiming systems and wished I could have an optical ranging tool as part of the magnifier. So, I tried an experiment to determine if having ranging stadia is in any way disruptive to the operator when using a magnifier.

I setup a test platform using a Crimson Trace red dot mounted just north of the trunnion,; I then mounted an IOR 4X24 M2 with a Dragunov style reticle to see how it all works out.

The image below is not representative of the actual optical clarity through the IOR 4X optic which was excellent, but stay with me. By the way, if you are not familiar with IOR Valdada, they make an outstanding magnified optic using excellent glass, they’re not cheap but you get what you pay for, check them out at Valdada Optics.

Getting back on topic, what I was trying to do is assess how disruptive, if at all, it would be to use a magnifier etched with ranging stadia. To test that, I used a fixed 4x optic, the IOR , which has excellent optical clarity and a Dragunov style reticle.

The picture above, and on the left, was taken through the IOR optic and through the red dot with the sight powered on, my photo bears no semblance to the actual image which was clear with a sharply defined red dot. Using this arrangement, I could easily determine that the vehicle, an SUV, is 2.5 mils wide. I know that SUV widths range from 69 in. to 79 in. , so I calculated an average (69+79)/2 arriving at 72 inches as my target width, so my range to the vehicle is approximately 800 yards. Rather than simply seeing a magnified image, I had the ability to accurately range my target. Having a ranging reticle provides the operator with actionable information to assist him or her in effectively and accurately engaging a long range target. Without a ranging reticle, the operator has to rely on Kentucky windage.

What I did in the picture on the right is photoshop out the excess reticle details leaving just the horizontal stadia to simulate what an operator would see looking through a magnifier with only ranging stadia etched – it’s uncluttered, clean and providing valuable range information to enhance the operators’ target engagement. There are a number of ranging reticles available; two of my favorites are a simple horizontal and vertical stadia or the Dragunov style shown below.

There’s currently a move to incorporate variable power magnified optics, usually in the 1x-6x and 1x-8x range, as a primary sight backed up by an offset red dot sight. This is an excellent configuration for a DMR operator but it adds weight and requires rotating the rifle inward to use the backup red dot sight; however, the benefits outweigh its disadvantages. On the other hand, for the average rifleman, there is no better fire control configuration than a red dot sight and magnifier with ranging stadia for rapid accurate fire.

Cody, Wyoming (August 18, 2021) – At a recent meeting, the American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) unanimously elected Mark Schreiber, President CRKT (Columbia Knife & Tool), as Vice President. The nonprofit membership organization’s mission is to ensure that Americans will always be able to make, buy, sell, own, carry, and use knives and edged tools.

“I strongly support AKTI and its mission and goals,” said Mark Schreiber. “And I am proud to increase my participation by accepting the position of vice president. The expectation of the vice president is that they will be the association’s next president. This is a green 6 MOA dot designed around the compact pistol frames, but as you’ll read in my upcoming review it is quite at home on a large frame tactical pistol. NDIA collects HR info to assist Afghan nationals seeking special visas

ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association is gathering human-resource contact information to help verify employment of Afghan nationals who are applying for special immigrant visas to the United States, the Arlington, Virginia-based trade organization announced Thursday, Aug. 19.

Contractors that employed Afghan nationals are encouraged fill out this form<https://ndiapd.wufoo.com/forms/zu2k13e080kpps/>. This information will be shared with the departments of Defense and State, which asked NDIA for help in collecting the human-resources details.

CAN YOU SAY CLUSTER_F__K?

It’s Friday and we are overdue for a shoot the shit. Between, COVID-19, Governor Cuomo and Afghanistan you must be looking forward to the colonization of Mars, as I am. But, look, there are things you can do to make yourself feel good in the midst of this massive cluster-fuck. I’ll begin by saying that the last thing you want to do is see a therapist. Remember that a therapist majored in psychology so they could understand themselves. The other thing you absolutely must do is not get your COVID information from social media and the media. Someone shared a social media video with me of some jackass advancing the theory that if you have gum disease you are 9 times more likely to succumb to the virus than someone with healthy gums. Get your COVID direction from your family doctor and no one else.

So, what should you do to get through these crazy times? Schedule a shoot the shit! A shoot the shit is a social event in which any topic can be discussed, participants don’t need to know anything about the subject, they are free to make any unsupported comment, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone the wish or change the subject altogether. The more participants the merrier, and having some eats for participants enhances the experience. A shoot the shit will also save you the $150 per hour that a therapist will cost you.

So let’s get started.

Mars habitat concept could be the safest way for humans to live there

Colonizing Mars has to be an amazing experience. I personally believe that space travel holds the key to our collective futures. So, the other day while sitting with a cup of coffee and a contraband Partagas cigar I found myself looking through online pictures of Mars’ surface..

When I saw the picture on the right, I thought man this spot would make a great rifle range. I reasoned that Mars’ atmosphere is not the same as Earth’s so I would need to develop a new dope book. I couldn’t rely on Kestrel until they release a Mars meter, so I researched the planet’s surface temperature, which is a –80 Fahrenheit, and its density altitude of 114,832 feet. With that information, I ran some ballistics calculations .

I wanted to see how the ballistic solutions would differ for a 168 grain .308 Win out to 1000 yards.

The image on the left is the ballistic calculation on Earth out to a 1000 yard target. The shooter would need an elevation of 40.4 MOA or 11.8 Mils. On Mars, assuming my data is accurate, the shooter would need only 19.5 MOA or 5.7 Mils to engage a 1000 yard target. On Earth, a 168 grain projectile goes transonic at about 1100 yards. At this range, the projectile is no longer supersonic and becomes unstable loosing accuracy. In Mars at 1150 yards the projectile still has a velocity 2627.9 feet per second and an energy of 2576 foot pounds. At a range of 3000 yards on Mars, the projectile still has a velocity of 2593.6 feet per second and an energy of 2509 foot pounds. The elevation needed to engage a 3000 yard target on Mars using a 168 grain .308 round is a mere 66.4 MOA.

Virtually any existing load would produce a sonic boom because the speed of sound on Mars is 792 fps.

Moving on …

If you are a manufacturer of magnified optics, the future looks bright and I don’t mean optically.

Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 13.08% over the forecast period, 2021-2029. The high CAGR is expected on account of the market value of 2020, which is a downfall compared to its previous years, due to the impact of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In closing, I have a beef to share. Every day, we see more red dot and reflex sights entering the market; many are also front-ended by 3x, 4x and even 6x magnifiers. Wouldn’t it be nice if manufacturers etched their glass with a range finding tool, say “a la Dragunov.” All of that magnification is great but I’d like to have some idea of the range to my target.

But Matt isn’t perfect. On the outside is a confident, outgoing personality but on the inside, Matt is a scaredy-cat. Matt is terrified of spiders, clowns and most of all heights. His fear of heights all started with the Great Parking Lot Fall of 1984 where Matt was doing his best Mary Lou Retton balance beam routine on a parking lot curb. During his dismount, Matt fell all 7 inches to the ground suffering major injuries including a knee scrape and bad case of gravel hands. This event changed Matt forever. From then on, Matt avoided parking curbs and large rocks for fear of another fall from the sky. He threw away his moon boots because the soles raised his head into the heavens. He even sold his Chevy Blazer for a Pontiac Sunbird to avoid such a high fall in case he exited the vehicle poorly.

But Matt is a fighter. He slowly tried to overcome this fear with different challenges. First a step ladder. Next, he successfully sat on the tailgate of a small framed truck. He even got to the point where his barber could pump up the chair a bit. But soon Matt will face his greatest challenge ever.

Easterseals of Michigan is an organization Matt has supported for years. They help individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families, live better lives. Close to Matt’s heart are the mental health services Easter Seals of Michigan provides to Veterans and their families. On average over 20 Veterans die by suicide each day. Matt and EOTECH are dedicated to raising money to support the Veterans who served our great country in any way we can.

On September 18, 2021 Easterseals Michigan is hosting their 5th Annual Over the Edge Fundraiser in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is an amazing rappelling event where Matt and other participants will face their fears for a great cause. They will take the plunge down the 18 story Bridgewater Place building which is one of Grand Rapids tallest buildings. Matt, and others, will raise a fundraising minimum of $1,000 to support ESM and their efforts.

One method is to buy numerous brands of ammunition in a specific caliber, go to the range and shoot, shoot, shoot. But not only is this approach time-consuming. Given ammunition prices, all that ammo might require a second mortgage!
