Bushnell® Recognizes Tom Beckstrand for Lifetime Achievement

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – July 28, 2021 – Bushnell®, an industry leader in performance optics, has recognized Tom Beckstrand with the 2020 Bill McRae Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to optics and the outdoor industry. The rifle and optics editor for Guns & Ammo, Beckstrand is a dedicated writer and passionate shooting sports educator.

Born and raised in Wells, Nevada, Beckstrand grew up shooting bottles and cans with his father. His skill with a rifle would go on to serve him well in the military from West Point to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he led both Special Forces and counter-terrorism sniper teams.

After his military career, Beckstrand started writing for shooting publications, eventually landing at Guns & Ammo magazine. At the time, there was limited coverage of optics in books and publications, and Beckstrand stepped in to help fill the gap. An ever-evolving area of shooting sports technology, optics became a passion for Beckstrand. Known for his insatiable curiosity, Beckstrand sought to explore optics technology from every angle for his readers.

“Early on, Tom learned each company’s optic contacts and began putting himself in front of the engineers and product managers,” said Eric Poole, editor of Guns & Ammo. “He’d show up to an optics manufacturer with questions prepared and write down answers. Along the way, he immersed himself in the science behind the technology, always wanting to show how and why the features or products work the way they do.”

Beckstrand uses his own personal shooting experiences to inform his writing as well. In 2009, he started competing in Precision Rifle Series (PRS) matches, two-gun matches and precision gas-gun matches.

“At some PRS matches, Tom noted it was hard to see at a distance when it was overcast or rainy and when the target was a piece of shot-up steel inside a woodline,” said Poole. “Most scopes are great when the sun is shining, but Tom started paying attention to who was hitting and who wasn’t when targets were in the shadows. He made note of the optics each were using, and along his journey as a writer, he started tracking and including light-transmission tests in his evaluations. That level of detail in his writing goes above and beyond.”

The Bill McRae Lifetime Achievement Award was established by Bushnell to honor the legendary writer and photojournalist Bill McRae for his vast contributions to the optics and outdoor industry throughout his 50-year career. Introduced in 2011, the annual award was created to recognize McRae and the other journalists who have made a profound impact in the industry.

“This award has honored some of the best shooting and optics writers in the industry, and Tom’s work and dedication has built on that tradition,” said Matt Rice, senior media relations manager for Bushnell. “Not only has Tom educated millions of hunters and shooters through his writing, but he has left his mark on the industry as a whole.”

Previous winners have included Ron Spomer, John Barsness, Wayne van Zwoll, David Petzal, Andrew McKean, Bob Robb, Bryce Towsley and Richard Mann.

Rafael fires SPIKE NLOS missile from Oshkosh JLTV in Estonia

Tel Aviv , July 27, 2021 – Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Oshkosh Defense have completed a successful demonstration and live firing of Rafael’s SPIKE NLOS (Non-Line-Of-Sight) missile from an Oshkosh JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle).

SPIKE NLOS is a fifth generation, 32 km-range missile, with high effectiveness achieved by a navigation system and lethal warheads capable of destroying a wide range of targets. It is part of the SPIKE family of multi-mission, precise, electro-optical missiles with legacy of 37 customers worldwide.

The demonstration, hosted by Estonian Navy, took place in Saaremaa Island, Estonia, in front of representatives from 14 countries, including Spike-user NATO countries, and senior members of Estonia’s defense ministry and members of the Estonian Armed Forces.

The demo included a live firing of two SPIKE NLOS missiles from a launcher mounted on the Oshkosh JLTV. The missiles was fired towards a beyond-line-of-sight two different naval targets with different size and characteristics located at sea, both targets were destroyed. The demo displayed the SPIKE NLOS missile’s unique capabilities, addressing modern coastal protection challenges and a large variety of targets, either at sea or on land and dense marine traffic.

The SPIKE NLOS enables positive visual target identification and precision strike at extended ranges and beyond-line-of-sight against marine targets (landing craft, corvettes, commando RIBs etc.), and on land – tanks and armored vehicles either at amphibious state or on shore, infantry, forward command posts and more. It has a bi-directional datalink, enabling full control of the missile from launch up to target hit with pinpoint precision that is not affected by range. Unlike laser-guided or active radar munitions, the SPIKE NLOS electro-optical guidance is completely passive and is capable of operation in a GPS-denied environments.

As a multi-platform solution with cross-force commonality, SPIKE allows missile stocks to managed jointly by users, create joint procurement and facilitate mutual support and maintenance.

The Best Little 1911 in Texas

Cimarron Firearm’s President, Mike Harvey, spins a new tale about his engraved 1911, formerly owned by the illustrious High County Sheriff and Texas Ranger, Jim Flournoy, a long-running advocate for the infamous Chicken Ranch of LaGrange, Texas.

Fredericksburg, Texas (July 2021) – In the latest Cimarron Originals with Mike Harvey, Cimarron Firearms President Mike Harvey unlocks the historic and colorful past of yet another firearm in his collection. Mike begins his story with a brief look back on the history of Cimarron Firearms’ beginnings and how in 1981 a unique, highly engraved 1911 came into his possession.

In around 1981, a local lawyer and a friend of Mike’s came into Big Foot, the West Houston store owned by Mike before Cimarron Firearms. The gentleman was interested in trading a fully engraved 1911 previously owned by a former Texas Ranger and well-known Sheriff. Charles Hudson, manager at Big Foot, traded a Henry rifle and Bowie knife for the 1911 after much back and forth.

The 1911 with beautiful engraving and gold plating on the trigger and hammer had been previously owned by the High Sheriff of Fayette County in Texas, Jim Flournoy. As a former Texas Ranger and beloved sheriff, Flournoy served as sheriff for 40 years, and like many of the Texas law enforcement family, became part of Texas legend.

In a little town called LaGrange, a bordello operated for almost 100 years. During the Depression, it became known affectionately as the Chicken Ranch, since most customers couldn’t pay for services with cash and instead traded farm produce, or better for the girls, egg-producing chickens. In 1962, a former employee, Edna Milton, took over the ranch and ran the bordello like a business, insisting on cleanliness, respectability, and community philanthropy. Sheriff Flournoy allowed the Chicken Ranch to continue and it prospered. He had a direct telephone line put into the Chicken Ranch to keep tabs on customers that might have confessed a crime during a moment of risky business. Unfortunately, a local TV reporter, Marvin Zindler, had it out for the Ranch and using his media platform reached a national audience decrying the illegal bordello until Texas Governor Dolph Brisoe had it shut down in 1973.

Larry L. King, a playwright, novelist, and a son of Texas, inspired by the Chicken Ranch saga, wrote a book, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” from which a musical play was created, which was nominated for seven Tony awards during its long run on Broadway.

Flash forward to 1981-82, shortly after Hudson sealed the trade for the 1911, a musical movie of the same title, featuring Burt Reynolds as Flournoy and Dolly Parton as Edna hit the theaters, becoming the fourth highest-grossing musical movie made during the 1980s. Mike Harvey considers the timing of the trade for Flournoy’s 1911 to be very fortuitous as it might have been out of reach once the movie came out with such success.

“I might make a replica of this,” Mike pondered in the video. Fans of Cimarron Firearms hope to see a Chicken Ranch 1911 sometime in the future.

NSSF Welcomes U.S. Senate Introduction of FFL Protection Act

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearm industry trade association, welcomes and fully supports U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) introduction of S. 2449, the Federal Firearms Licensee Protection Act. The legislation would strengthen and enhance criminal penalties for thefts of firearms from federally licensed firearm retailers (FFLs). This legislation is a clear message to those violent criminals engaging in criminal activities that target firearm retailers for theft and robberies that community safety is a national priority. This bill helps provide for safer communities, assists law enforcement and protects the livelihoods of firearm retailers.

“Criminals targeting firearm retailers to steal guns are on notice. Congress will not tolerate criminals who victimize these lawful businesses to further prey upon and threaten communities,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Senator Graham has been a staunch advocate of holding criminals accountable for their misdeeds and protecting firearm retailers. This legislation does both and is the sort of bill our nation needs to make our communities safer. We thank Senator Graham and the 20 senators who joined to bring this much-needed legislation that tells criminals that Congress and the firearm industry will hold those committing crime responsible for their reprehensible actions.”

The Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) Protection Act builds on the efforts NSSF has taken to address robbery and burglary of firearms through the partnership with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on Operation Secure Store®. As part of Operation Secure Store, NSSF matches ATF reward offers for information regarding these crimes that leads to the arrest and conviction of the criminals responsible and recovery of the stolen firearms. Additionally, NSSF helps educate firearm retailers on steps they can take to reduce the chance guns will be stolen from them during a burglary or robbery, and in cooperation with ATF, conducts retailer store security seminars, assists retailers with store security audits of their premises and endorses and promotes the use of security products like smash resistant display cases.

NSSF has been advocating for decades for programs and policies that ensure firearms remain beyond the reach of those who should never possess them, including criminals that are already prohibited individuals. ARLINGTON, Va., July 22, 2021 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a global leader in intelligent, multi-domain robotic systems, today announced receipt of two firm-fixed-price orders totaling $15,940,378 from the United States Air Force. The orders, received on April 19, 2021 and May 6, 2021, encompass the procurement of Puma™ 3 AE unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and spares packages, as well as Raven® UAS spares packages. The Puma 3 AE systems and spares were delivered on April 30, 2021. Delivery of the Raven spares is anticipated by November 2021.

Thank God it’s Friday! We’ve made it through another hellacious week. In all candor, the COVID-19 Delta strain, get a vaccine, don’t get a vaccine, you need a mask you don’t need a mask extravaganza has me completely bored. You may be thinking of going to visit a therapist but folks they’re as screwed up as you are. I got word yesterday afternoon that my nephew’s son has tested positive for the COVID Delta variant, he is 12 years old and is now isolated from his younger brother, so you can take the transmissibility reputation of the Delta variant to the bank. The solution is to get yourself and immediate members of your family vaccinated. If you or your family members have preexisting conditions you’ll want to discuss it with your family physician.

The medical component of the COVID national response was first rate but the communication and public relations is an absolute disaster. The first to blame for the communications failure is the media who handled this pandemic like imbeciles, they were concerned more with showing how much they knew than communicating an accurate message. The CDC was equally incompetent and I say that with respect for the work they do. They should have hired a public relations firm to manage the messaging and distribute information in a clear, palatable and non-threating manner. What we have done is demonstrate how utterly incompetent the country is in dealing with what I will describe as a CBRN incident. All I can say is we better get our shit together because this will happen again and from my point of view it won’t be a random natural event.

So, if all of this stuff stresses you out, for God’s sake don’t go to a therapist; instead schedule a shoot the shit. A therapist is a jackass who majored in psychology so they could understand themselves. A shoot the shit , especially with free food, on the other hand, will set you back the price of a couple of pizzas. Participants don’t need to know anything about the topic being discussed, they are free to make any unsupported statement they wish, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. So, let’s shoot the shit…

Who besides me is excited about the prospect of commercial space travel? This month we saw two of the world’s richest men fly to space aboard crafts and technology they funded. We literally have morons in Congress that feel they should be paying taxes and not investing in space related ventures. You’ve got to be extraordinarily stupid. Someone should suggest to them that the reason they’re paying so little taxes is that they’re using laws they created. I love wealthy people, but what we should be doing is providing every fiscal incentive available for new business creation.

What Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson and Jeff Bezos accomplished on July 11 and July 20 respectively is a major accomplishment. Their projects will expedite colonization of the moon and possibly Mars, and the activities needed to support their efforts will create hundreds of thousands of jobs impacting a broad base of the U.S. Economy. The first thing that comes to mind is the impact of reusable launch vehicles on things like telecommunications, navigation and a variety of industries or organizations that rely on space based assets. So let’s encourage more of this activity and not discourage it.

There were two distinct approaches to a common endeavor, space travel. Jeff Bezos propels an unpiloted capsule using a reusable first stage. Interestingly, some prominent media commentators have compared Blue Origin’s vehicles to a phallic symbol, but unless I’ve misread Jeff Bezos, it’s unlikely you’ll see mockups in adult toy stores or Black & Decker offering vibrating models.

Virgin Galactic’s vehicle is a far less suggestive design. The space vehicle is flown by a host aircraft to an altitude of 50,000 feet AGL; then released, and under its own power fly to space. Branson’s trip was piloted and took him to an altitude of 300,000 feet AGL.

I can’t wait to see what Elon Musk will do but he’s already demonstrated his abilities with SpaceX

Pro Tip: Ballistic App and Suppressed Rifles

Gainesville, GA (July 21, 2021) Suppressors are great tools for serious shooters, especially long-distance competitors and hunters. Quality suppressors reduce muzzle blasts to safe hearing levels without hearing protection, making communication between shooters more efficient. In most cases, a suppressor will even lessen the felt recoil of a rifle. However, shooters need to make specific allowances for suppressed firearms.

“A suppressor can change your rifle’s point of impact,” said Curt Vaughn, veteran long-distance shooting competitor and Head of Product for Ballistic. “If you shoot with your suppressor on all the time, you should be fine. However, if you have it on and off, you will, in most cases, see a shift in impact from zero when going from an unsuppressed to a suppressed rifle.”

When possible, Vaughn advised, always keep the suppressor attached to your rifle. However, if you do have to remove it for certain shots, make sure you know the point of impact shift which will result, and hold over and/or to the side accordingly.

One question that frequently comes up: how might a suppressor affect your bullet’s velocity? Interestingly, a recent study looked at this question and found that a suppressor can alter your load’s feet per second (fps) velocity. And here, Ballistic can aid the long-distance shooter.

The study, “Effects of Sound Suppressors on Muzzle Velocity, Bullet Yaw, and Drag,”

https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1802/1802.05748.pdf was written by four researchers based on tests they conducted at the Fusilier Complex, a private shooting range in Lafayette, Louisiana. Using rifles chambered in .300 Win Mag, the researchers shot four different factory ammunition loads; three of the loads were fired through rifles equipped with different models of suppressors, while the fourth load was shot unsuppressed.

Among other variables, muzzle velocities were recorded for each load. Compared to the rifles and loads with no suppression, many suppressed loads showed a slight decrease in fps, from 10- to 30-fps slower. However, depending on the ammunition used, some of the suppressed loads produced muzzle velocities 10- to 20-fps above non-suppressed loads. Will plus or minus 10- to 30-fps affect your accuracy? Not if you are shooting at steel or a big bull elk a couple of hundred yards away.

But once you go long, like 1,000 yards or more, a difference of 30-fps can and will change important variables including bullet drop and the point at which the bullet goes from super- to sub-sonic, Vaughn noted.

The only way to know the effect of your suppressor on your bullet’s velocity is to chronograph your loads with your rifle’s suppressor attached and with it off. If the velocities are the same? Your current Ballistic profile for that round is good to go. But if there’s a variation, you will want to develop a new Ballistic profile and have both profiles ready in your iPhone, iPad or laptop. Name one, “6.5 CM-UNSUPP,” for example, the other “6.5CM-Suppressed.”

This way, you will be ready for that precision shot with or without your suppressor attached.

A Girl & A Gun Filed Amicus Brief Defending Rights to Keep and Bear Arms

AUSTIN, TX (AGirlandAGun.org) — One of the nation’s largest female firearms organizations, A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League (AG & AG), has filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court urging justices to declare a New York state concealed carry gun law unconstitutional.

For the first time in several years, the United States Supreme Court will hear a major gun control case. On Monday the Court granted a writ of certiorari to New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Keith Corlett, over whether Corlett’s Second Amendment right was violated when New York denied his applications for a concealed carry license because the applicant did not show an “actual and articulable” need to carry.

An amicus curiae is Latin for “friend of the court” and is a common feature in appellate state and federal appellate courts especially in the U.S. Supreme Court. The brief allows A Girl & A Gun to express its views directly to the Supreme Court, since the resolution of this case could affect how its members exercise their rights to keep and bear arms.

In the amicus brief, AG & AG joins Black Guns Matter and Armed Equality, organizations whose members also have a vested interest in the outcome of this case. The brief states, “African Americans, women, sexual minorities, religious minorities, immigrants, political dissidents and other historically marginalized groups are especially vulnerable to abuse under New York’s discretionary scheme.”

“The right to self-defense is a fundamental right,” says Robyn Sandoval, Executive Director of A Girl & A Gun. “The gun is ‘the great equalizer’ that allows a woman to defend herself and her family against a much larger and stronger threat. Americans should not have to seek arbitrary consent to exercise their Constitutional rights. The bureaucratic delays and denials put families’ lives at risk.”

New York is among eight states that limit who has the right to carry a firearm in public. The others are California, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

Sandoval was also quoted in a second amicus brief submitted by the Independent Women’s Law Center. This brief argues that “the Second Amendment secures a personal right to carry a firearm outside the home for purposes of self-defense. This right is especially important for individuals for whom a firearm is the great equalizer: women.”

The DC Project, Operation Blazing Sword, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, as well as 25 U.S. Senators, 26 States Attorneys General, and several other interested parties, have also submitted briefs for this case.
