Shotgun Scars and How To Avoid Getting Them
“Oh, my gosh,” I think to myself. “I have to get this poor woman to settle down. What in the world happened to her that she is on the verge of tears, almost ready to pass out?”
This is unfortunately a more common occurrence than you think. A new shooter gets in the box, excited to either try a new hobby sport or maybe prep for a corporate outing or even a hunt. The moment she picks the gun up, her muscles start quivering, her eyes become almost frantic and often, the color in her face will flush as she fights through impending tears. She had no idea the scars were so deep. It’s been years since she last pulled the trigger on a shotgun.
Someone somewhere has caused an almost irreversible scar for this person. A scar that digs so deep, she can’t even think straight, much less take instruction. A scar that is pretty much causing a full-body paralysis once the shotgun is mounted to her shoulder. Warning, this is one of my soap box topics and with good reason.
Fundamentals for Wing-Shooting
September. Just saying it rouses excitement and anticipation for the opening of the hunt season. In Virginia, it welcomes opening day for dove and goose and adds teal later in the month. While it is still hot, regularly reaching the 80s, it’s easy enough to get an early start on the day or enjoy a long sit in the late afternoon.
September also means a reality check for many that may have slacked off a bit on honing their shooting skills and quickly realizing it is now time to head back to the fields and waters. There is still plenty of time to correct any bad habits and perfect your shooting prowess.

Purpose-built for 10 µm SXGA (1280 x 1024 pixels) detectors, this next-generation optical solution delivers unmatched clarity, precision, and operational reach for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions across air, land, and sea.
Built on a proven legacy and engineered for modern ISR needs, the SupIR-X 15-300mm f/4 lens fully unlocks the thermal imaging performance of 10 µm SXGA detectors. The SupIR-X lens delivers high-performance MWIR imagery with low distortion, line-of-sight (LOS) stability, and boresight retention. The lens is fully compatible with the Ophir extender ecosystem, scaling up to 1200 mm focal length, extending detection ranges beyond 26 km for vehicle targets while maintaining a constant f/4 aperture. An integrated mechanical shutter also ensures consistent image quality in dynamic environments.

Specifications
The SupIR-X 15–300mm f/4 lens, optimized for 10 µm SXGA MWIR detectors in the 3.6-4.2 µm and 3.6-4.9 µm spectral bands, delivers a horizontal field of view (FOV) from 45° (wide FOV) down to 2.4° (Narrow FOV) with high spatial resolution and low distortion across the full image. It provides high transmission of 92% (high durability) and features high-speed motorized focus (<1 sec) and fast zooming (≤8 sec). An integrated shutter supports mechanical non-uniformity correction (NUC), while an extended back focal length (BFL) eases system integration. The SupIR-X lens is fully compatible with 19.4 mm and 20.5 mm cold shield height detectors supporting a wide range of leading MWIR sensors. Rugged yet compact, it measures Ø93.4×132 mm, weighs approximately 1 kg, and withstands –32 °C to +80 °C operating conditions with IP67 front element sealing.
The new lens is compatible with the Ophir optical extender ecosystem, allowing focal lengths to scale from 30 mm up to 1200 mm. Available configurations include: 30-600 mm, 35-690 mm, 45-900 mm, and 60-1200 mm, enabling vehicle detection ranges of more than 26 km under standard operational conditions.

Available in high durability and hard carbon coating configurations, the SupIR-X lens is engineered for the harshest environments. With motorized focus and zoom, rapid response, and ruggedized mechanics, it is mission-ready for border and homeland security, long-range ISR, counter-UAS operations, critical infrastructure protection, coastal and maritime surveillance, law enforcement, and civil defense.

Barrett Announces New PGS Product Line
MURFREESBORO, TN – Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. has unveiled the next iteration of its 30mm Precision Grenadier System (PGS).
The latest modification (Mod) of the revolutionary weapon will be showcased at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) exposition in Washington DC this week.
Barrett and MARS Inc were selected in May as the winners of the xTech Soldier Lethality Competition in support of the U.S. Army’s Precision Grenadier System (PGS) program.
The PGS is a portable, shoulder fired, semi-automatic, magazine fed grenade rifle. It includes an integrated armament system (weapon, ammunition, fire control) that enables rapid, precision engagements to destroy targets in defilade and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) targets at close range.
Barrett has also revealed it is developing a vehicle mounted remote weapon system (RWS) option which will enable the weapon to be utilized in multiple combat scenarios.
The Mod 0 is planned for release in 2026. It will have an advanced disturbed reticle fire control system (FCS), five-round semi-automatic fire, a recoil dampening system, and four supported ammunition types. This provides many solutions for effective engagement on the battlefield.
The Mod 1 is planned for release in 2027. It will build upon the Mod 0 capabilities, while enhancing CUAS effectiveness. This Mod 1 will have an advanced FCS and proximity fuzed ammunition to increase probability of kill on CUAS.
The Mod 2 will deliver the required capability of the US Army program of record PGS. This will include Mod 0 and Mod 1 capability alongside further advances in FCS, improving probability of lethality, target engagement/ handoff and HE air-burst capability to provide a true squad level counter defilade munition.

Building on over four decades of success with the original Concealable, the 2.0 version is updated for 21st century gun carriers. Cut low at the front, the new design accommodates most popular carry-style red dot optics. The raised sweat guard protects the wearer’s body from the pistol, and the pistol from the body’s natural perspiration. A mild butt-forward cant offers an easy draw from behind the dominant-side hip while also enhancing concealment with larger defensive pistols.
The Concealable 2.0’s unique two-piece construction is contoured on the body side to the natural curve of the hip, keeping all the molding on the front of the holster, allowing for significantly more comfortable carry and a narrower profile than an ordinary pancake type holster. Hand-molded to fit specific handguns, the Concealable 2.0 features a deeply hand-molded exterior for excellent retention properties and superior appearance, firing grip accessibility for speed, and double-stitched seams for long-lasting durability.
