Barrett Begins Construction on New Era in Weapon Systems Manufacturing
MURFREESBORO, TN – The NIOA Group has officially broken ground on its new Barrett Firearms facility, heralding a new era in weapon systems manufacturing for Tennessee.
The ceremony marking the beginning of construction of the Barrett Manufacturing & Technology Campus (BMTC) and NIOA North American Headquarters, was attended by a host of dignitaries including Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator for Tennessee, the Honorable Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee Economic and Community Development (TNECD) Commissioner Stuart McWhorter, Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr and Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland, industry leaders, company executives and staff.
The BMTC will be the NIOA Group’s global center of excellence for firearms and advanced military weapons manufacturing and research capabilities. The ceremony was held today in conjunction with TNECD.
The $76.4 million project creates a 170-acre campus at 8808 Manchester Pike, not far from the company’s original headquarters where it has proudly operated for more than four decades. It marks the most significant investment in Barrett’s history and reflects the NIOA Group’s long-term commitment to advanced manufacturing and local jobs in Rutherford County.
Barrett has built a legendary reputation for its craftmanship and innovation in large caliber long-range superiority over 40 years and is a trusted supplier to US and allied militaries worldwide. This new facility described as “the factory of the future” will continue that story of innovation, research and development and precision military manufacturing to produce the next generation of advanced soldier fired weapon systems.
Stage 1 of the BMTC includes corporate headquarters, R&D capabilities, large scale state-of-the-art manufacturing and first floor office area spread over more than 250,000 square feet. The expansion will double the Barrett workforce over the next five years and enable the company to meet growing worldwide demand for its commercial and defense products.
Barrett CEO Bryan James said the new facility represented a bold step forward and a long-term commitment to the company’s heritage in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
“As a locally founded business, we’re proud to invest once again in the place that has shaped our success as a global leader serving both the commercial and military markets,” Mr. James said.
“This project not only underscores our commitment to the region, supporting hundreds of local jobs, but it’s a significant investment in our people, our customers and our capabilities.”
Mr. James thanked TNECD and the wider community for their strong support of the project, recognizing its potential to create skilled jobs for the region.
NIOA Group executive chairman and chairman of the Barrett board, Rob Nioa, said the new facility would serve as the NIOA Group’s global firearms and advanced military weapons manufacturing center of excellence.
“Tennessee is a firearms and ammunition industry powerhouse. As we look ahead to global growth, we are excited to be building the factory of the future right here,” Mr. Nioa said.
“This is a strategic investment that will give us the scale, technology and capacity to meet the evolving demands of our customers and defense partners worldwide.”
Construction of the BMTC is expected to be completed by February 2027 with operations to begin soon after.

A recent study from Penn State University has revealed a surprising security concern: Millimeter-wave radar can pick up and transcribe private phone calls by sensing the tiny vibrations emitted through a cellphone’s earpiece.
According to the press release, In controlled experiments, researchers positioned a radar device roughly three meters from a phone during a call. The radar detected minute surface oscillations originating from the earpiece. This raw data was then processed using a lightly adapted version of the Whisper speech recognition model, retraining just 1% of its parameters to interpret radar-based vibrations. The result: about 60% transcription accuracy within a vocabulary of up to 10,000 words. While not flawless, even partial success—such as capturing keywords—poses meaningful privacy risks.
Back in 2022, the same team showed that radar could identify ten pre-selected words with up to 83% accuracy. The current work expands from keyword spotting to continuous speech, albeit with reduced accuracy due to the complexity and noisiness of radar signal processing.
Researchers liken the output to lip-reading: imperfect and incomplete, but often enough to piece together conversations when paired with context. That resemblance raises red flags for potential misuse, especially by sophisticated adversaries.
The experimental setup is for research purposes. However, the study underscores a growing concern: emerging technologies previously seen as harmless may be repurposed for surveillance.
The team behind the research stresses that its goal is not to enable eavesdropping, but to highlight potential risks before they are exploited. Future work may focus on developing protective countermeasures, such as passive acoustic dampening or active shielding, to safeguard sensitive conversations.
As wireless systems and AI continue to evolve, this study serves as a reminder: even the faintest vibrations from everyday devices can compromise privacy.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, celebrated Oklahoma’s Gov. Kevin Stitt signing SB 500, the NSSF-priority Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act, yesterday in Oklahoma City. The law prohibits state agencies and local government entities from entering into contracts with corporations that discriminate against the firearm industry.
Gov. Stitt made firearm industry protections a priority and promised attendees at NSSF’s SHOT Show® Governors Forum that he would sign the bill into law if it made it to his desk. Yesterday, Gov. Stitt delivered on that promise in a formal ceremony of bringing protections against financial discrimination for firearm-related businesses in his state. The signing ceremony comes on the heels of President Donald Trump issuing the NSSF-supported Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans Executive Order to ban “woke” debanking that targeted the firearm industry.
“With his signature, Governor Stitt made clear it is the government’s responsibility to protect the firearm industry from sinister corporate efforts to starve it of essential services such as banking, payment processing, software and insurance. He appreciates our unique status as the only constitutionally-protected industry in America,” said Darren LaSorte, Director of Government Relations – State Affairs. “The governor embraces the fact that we must thrive for his constituents in the Sooner State to exercise a fundamental right. Governor Stitt has also protected the state’s taxpayers from being compelled to enrich the large, ‘woke’ companies actively seeking to diminish their right to keep and bear arms. NSSF sincerely thanks state Senator Casey Murdock and state Representative Kevin West, the bill’s sponsors, for seeing this years-long battle through to the finish.”
“Our Second Amendment rights are a cornerstone of the well-being of our republic. I was proud to sign SB 500 into law, because Oklahoma will always defend the right to bear arms,” said Gov. Stitt. “I’m grateful for groups like the National Shooting Sports Foundation for their work to defend this right.”
Oklahoma’s FIND Act requires all large corporations seeking contracts valued at $100,000 or greater with the state and its municipalities to certify that they hold no discriminatory policies against firearm industry businesses. Contracts that are certified and later discovered to be out of compliance with the law will be subject to cancellation.
Gov. Stitt has made growing and protecting the firearm industry a priority in Oklahoma. Just this year, Vudoo Gun Works announced it will relocate operations to Prague, Oklahoma, from Utah and Oklahoma’s Department of Commerce announced in May that CBC Global Ammunition is bringing ammunition manufacturing to the state, an investment of $300 million and 350 jobs.
Oklahoma is the 11th state to enact FIND Act laws to prevent corporate discrimination. Others include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming. Similar legislation, also titled the FIND Act, was introduced in Congress by U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.) as H.R. 45 and by U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) as S. 137.

NSSF, ATF, DOJ Emphasize ‘Don’t Lie for the Other Guy™
CHARLOTTE — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, together with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), announced a month-long public education campaign reminding the Charlotte, North Carolina, area public about stiff penalties facing individuals convicted of unlawful firearm purchases. The “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign is in its 25th year and drives home the message that anyone making an illegal firearm purchase faces a federal felony penalty of up to 15 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. The program is funded in full by the firearm industry and is now also complemented by federal funding allocated to ATF by Congress. Charlotte was chosen for this specific campaign by ATF.
“The firearm industry has always been fully committed to keeping firearms out of the hands of those who should not possess them. In its twenty-fifth year, we are especially proud to launch this Don’t Lie for the Other Guy public awareness campaign in Charlotte as part of our cooperative relationship with the ATF, the DOJ and the entire law enforcement community to assist them in their efforts to reduce criminal acquisition of firearms and to keep communities safe,” said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi.
The Charlotte-area “Don’t Lie” campaign will total more than 35.5 million gross media impressions. This includes an outdoor campaign running on 20 high-impact billboards along all major roadways, as well as 30 roadside display posters throughout the region with the message: “Buy a gun for someone who can’t and buy yourself 15 years in jail. Don’t Lie for the Other Guy.” In addition, the campaign will include more than 850 radio spots on four of the top FM stations in the market, as well as 4.313 million targeted impressions across Facebook, Instagram and mobile display.
To legally purchase a firearm, a person must pass an FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System verification, or NICS background check, and fully comply with all state and local laws. When a criminal is illegally trafficking in firearms or knows they cannot pass this check, they may try to induce a friend or acquaintance to make the purchase for them. This is a straw purchase and is a felony.
The “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” program also involves educating firearm retailers to better detect and prevent straw purchases by providing “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” retailer kits containing a training video and information for storeowners and staff, as well as point-of-purchase displays aimed to deter illegal straw purchasers.
