NSSF Challenges Illinois’ Unconstitutional Gun and Magazine Ban
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, along with several co-plaintiffs, filed a legal challenge seeking declaratory and injunctive relief to prevent Illinois from enforcing the recently enacted law that bans most semiautomatic firearms including Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs), certain models of semiautomatic handguns and standard capacity magazines.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law HB 5471, the “Protect Illinois Communities Act.” HB 5741 is among the nation’s most expansive gun control laws. It bans the sale of hundreds of models of rifles including commonly-owned MSRs, certain semiautomatic handguns and rifle magazines with a capacity greater than 10 cartridges and pistol magazines with a capacity greater than 15 cartridges. There are over 24.4 million MSRs in circulation today, more popular than the top selling Ford F-150, and tens of millions of standard-capacity magazines also in circulation.
“The Illinois gun ban law is an overreaching attempt to deny law-abiding Americans their fundamental and Constitutionally-protected Second Amendment rights,” said Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “The U.S. Supreme has already recognized that semiautomatic rifles ‘traditionally have been widely accepted as lawful,’ and with over 24 million of these rifles in circulation today, they are clearly commonly-owned for lawful purposes, meeting the threshold set by the Supreme Court in its Heller decision. Semiautomatic handguns are overwhelmingly the choice of firearm for personal self-defense. This law is clearly unconstitutional and does nothing to punish the criminal. It only deprives law-abiding Americans from being able to exercise their full spectrum of Second Amendment rights.”
Semiautomatic firearm technology is more than a century old. The Mannlicher Model 85 was designed by gunsmith Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher in 1885. Winchester Repeating Arms introduced the Model 1903, the first semiautomatic rifle to the U.S. commercial market in 1903. Detachable box magazines were first introduced with the Jarre harmonica pistol of 1862 and later saw commercial success with Mauser in 1896. The AR-15 was first designed by Eugene Stoner for ArmaLite, Inc., and introduced to the commercial market by Colt Manufacturing in 1963.

FN America drew a huge crowd at this year’s SHOT SHOW. The company introduced a number of new products but there were three that I’ll call stars of the show. Expanding the SCAR family of firearms is the SCAR 15P a 5.56 pistol platform that offers all the SCAR features including a non-reciprocating charging handle. FN made transitioning from a pistol platform to an SBR simple; the SCAR 15P offers a vertical Picatinny rail that will accept a buttstock.

FN also introduced two large bore pistols in the 500 family. The FN 510 Tactical is chambered in 10mm Auto, 22+1 rounds of 10mm, low profile MRDS mounting system, an excellent trigger with a short audible reset and outstanding grip texture. The FN 510 sits comfortably in the hand.
The FN 545 in .45 ACP was FN’s second large bore offering for 2023. Unlike FN’s legendary FN FNX 45 Tactical, which is a hammer fired DA/SA pistol, the 545 is striker fired with an 18+1 capacity. The 545 offers a low profile MRDS mounting system as well as an interchangeable backstrap to customize the pistol grip. The trigger is an improvement over the FNX.

Australian defense contractor NIOA has expanded its global reach with the 100 percent acquisition of the industry-leading rifle design and manufacturing company, Barrett Firearms.
In announcing the deal, NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa said the two family-owned companies came together out of a shared commitment to quality, innovation, loyalty, and mission.
“NIOA’s association with Barrett dates back to 2008. We have been inspired by the story of Barrett and admire what Ronnie, Chris and the family have built over more than four decades,” Mr. Nioa said.
“It’s been a story of hard work, perseverance, and purpose culminating in the delivery of critical capability for the men and women of the US military and its allies around the world as well as exceptional products to law enforcement agencies and civilian markets.

Mr. Nioa also announced two key leadership appointments – current Barrett President Sam Shallenberger has been promoted to the role of Chief Executive Officer while long-serving Barrett Chief Operating Officer Bryan James becomes President.
Ronnie Barrett and Chris Barrett will provide ongoing support as executive advisers to Barrett and the NIOA Group.

NSSF Hails Texas Attorney General’s Stand Against ‘Woke’ Banking Discrimination
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, praised Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton’s determination that Citigroup’s antigun discriminatory policies of refusing to conduct business with Constitutionally-protected firearm businesses violates state law.
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed SB 19, the Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act, into law in 2021, which requires corporations competing for municipal contracts in The Lone Star State to certify they do not hold discriminatory policies against lawful firearm businesses. Citigroup submitted a certification letter attesting they do not hold such policies. Their own website, however, demonstrates that the corporate bank refuses business with firearm businesses that do not comply with their unconstitutional restrictions, including age-based gun bans, unlawful magazine restrictions, and bump stock bans (which was recently ruled unconstitutional in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.)
“The firearm industry is grateful for Attorney General Paxton’s steadfast commitment to protecting the Second Amendment rights of Texans and his refusal to bow to the corporate ‘woke’ agendas that seek to eliminate the Constitutional rights of all Americans,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Attorney General Paxton’s determination that Citigroup is, in fact, unlawfully discriminating against firearm businesses tells these corporate entities that the Second Amendment is not for sale.”
The FIND Act requires corporations seeking to do business with the State of Texas and local governments to certify that they hold no policies that discriminate against firearms or ammunition companies and will not implement any such policies while the contracts are in force. The law ensures that taxpayer-funded contracts aren’t used to benefit policies that discriminate and deny services to firearm and ammunition-related businesses. Texas taxpayers won’t be burdened with funding discriminatory policies that undermine their rights and throttle the businesses that provide the means to exercise those rights.

Strong attendance, enthusiastic buyers and sellers, and a series of packed special events that collectively made up “SHOT Week” resulted in one of the top-rated SHOT Shows to date.
The show spanned Jan. 17-20 at The Venetian Expo and Caesars Forum in Las Vegas. Boasting pre-pandemic level attendance with more than 52,000 industry professionals packing the 13.9 miles of aisles over four days eager to view new, innovative products used for target shooting, hunting, outdoor recreation and law enforcement.
“The industry was back in full force at this year’s SHOT Show, and the energy and momentum among all attendees was palpable,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer. “I always say the SHOT Show is like Christmas morning and the Super Bowl all in one, and this year it was that and more. We are thrilled at the positive response from our attendees and optimistic for a strong year of industry sales to come.”
This was the largest SHOT Show ever, marking the second year of expanded exhibit space at Caesars Forum, in addition to The Venetian Expo. More than 2,500 companies displayed products and services in booths covering more than 816,000 net square feet and attracting attendees from 115 countries and all 50 states.
Sentiments from the Show Floor

Governors Forum
One of the most well-attended special events was the NSSF Governors’ Forum, where seven governors discussed the importance of firearm businesses to their economies and their efforts to attract firearm- and ammunition-related companies to relocate to their state. Across America, the $7.9 billion firearm industry supports more than 375,000 jobs.
“On behalf of everyone in the state of Nevada and Las Vegas, we’re just very happy to welcome the SHOT Show and the 52,000 attendees that come here and support our Second Amendment,” said Nevada Lt. Gov. Stavros Anthony. “This is great, people are energized, they’re excited, they want to come in and see the latest technology, the latest equipment when it comes to firearms. I’m here to welcome them with open arms and make sure SHOT Show knows that we support them, and we want them back every single year for a long time.”
Honoring Industry’s Leaders
NSSF announced its 2023 Hall of Fame inductees, honoring three industry leaders who left indelible marks on the industry and the shooting sports. The NSSF Hall of Fame was launched at the 2020 show to honor industry leaders for their contributions to NSSF, the SHOT Show and the heritage of target shooting and hunting in America. This year’s inductees were Bill Ruger Sr., Richard Lipsey and Bob Behn.
Supplier Showcase
The two-day Supplier Showcase featured 539 OEM third-party suppliers meeting with exhibiting manufacturers and exploring their needs for extrusions, fabrication, fabrics, machinery, metal, plastics, software, logistical support and tools.
“For a company like us with 40 people, it’s a great fit. We can come show our wares for two days. The bigger companies come up here and walk around and the engineering people will talk to us. We’ve done it every year, and it’s really helped us increase our business,” said Jeff Miller, Sales Manager at Active Manufacturing.
Supplier Showcase exhibitor Martin Levy, Business Development Manager for DiFruscia Industries, said, “I have invited many other suppliers to this show — it’s a great show for mingling with other suppliers and getting great customers.”
“As a manufacturer, we’re always looking for new possibilities with customers. It’s a win-win when we get to meet new people . . . Not only do we get to pick up potential new customers, but they also get a solution to whatever application or issue they’re facing,” said Supplier Showcase exhibitor Jessica Ramos, Regional Sales Manager for RÖHM Products America, inc.
Education Sessions
Education sessions for firearm retailers, shooting range operators, exporters and law enforcement professionals are an important segment of SHOT Show. This year over 6,000 industry members attended SHOT University™, Law Enforcement Education Program and Export Training Sessions to receive in-person classes on compliance, operations and much more.
Traci Lewellin, Owner of Gun City shared, “SHOT University adds an amazing value for us. I can come in here, I have our managers out still looking at booths, and I can learn some of the educational processes to take back to our stores and try to implement them over the next year.”
Off-Site ‘SHOT Week’ Highlights
Many official show events cluster around the four days of the SHOT Show, creating “SHOT Week.” Among them was the NSSF/HAVA Golf Classic in support of Honored American Veterans Afield, a firearm industry-run charitable organization that helps the healing of disabled combat veterans through participation in hunting and the shooting sports. Also, Industry Day at the RangeTM on the day before the SHOT Show gives invited media members and buyers a truly exclusive opportunity to preview and test the latest guns, gear and gadgets before anyone else in the industry. This year, it had 3,400 attendees and exhibitors in attendance.
Expanded Networking Opportunities
This year, the SHOT Show provided more networking opportunities than ever before with an exciting new element at the 2023 SHOT Show: “SHOT After Dark,” featuring three evenings of events that included two networking receptions and an All-Star Jam Concert for all show attendees.

Firearm Industry Inducts Three into NSSF Hall of Fame
The contributions of Bob Behn, Richard Lipsey and Bill Ruger, Sr., to industry and the shooting sports are recognized at the 2023 SHOT Show®.
LAS VEGAS — NSSF®, The Trade Association of the Firearm Industry, honored three inductees to its Hall of Fame at the 2023 SHOT Show, recognizing them for their leadership that spanned decades and their contributions to the growth of the industry and expanding the shooting sports.
Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO, praised the three men in remarks made today at the NSSF Members Meeting at the SHOT Show. SHOT Show is the largest trade show of hunting, shooting, law enforcement and outdoor-related products in the world.
“Pausing at the SHOT Show to recognize our past leaders and their accomplishments reminds us that their efforts and involvement have benefitted our industry in so many ways. They have contributed to our heritage through the companies they ran, the products they helped create and their unique individual talents. For that and so much more, they deserve this honor and our praise,” said Bartozzi.
The inductees and their accomplishments are detailed in large panels at the SHOT Show, visible to the tens of thousands of trade professionals in attendance.
The 2023 inductees to the NSSF Hall of Fame are:
Bob Behn
Robert W. Behn joined the Marlin Firearms Company in 1969, eventually rising through the ranks to serve as the company’s President from 1997-2007 and then CEO until his retirement in 2008. After retiring from Marlin, Behn became a Senior Advisor to the Executive Chairman of Remington Arms while also serving as a director of Remington’s board. He is a past Vice Chairman of NSSF’s Board of Governors, as well as a past board member of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI®). Behn is a recipient of NSSF’s Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award.
Richard A. Lipsey
Richard Lipsey is the founder of powerhouse wholesaler and distributor Lipsey’s. His career in the sporting goods industry has spanned nearly 60 years, during which he built Lipsey’s into one of the largest distributors in the country. A dedicated conservationist, particularly in the area of wetlands, coastal and waterfowl conservation across North America and in his home state of Louisiana, Lipsey is renowned for his philanthropy on the local, state and federal levels. A staunch supporter of NSSF and its wide-ranging efforts over the years, Lipsey is a recipient of NSSF’s Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award.
Bill Ruger
William B. Ruger, Sr., was the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Sturm, Ruger & Company. Widely recognized as one of America’s greatest gun designers, Bill led the company to becoming the largest firearm manufacturer in the United States. He had a hand in the original design and time-honored styling of every firearm his company produced, and he continued to work on new creations up until his death in 2002. His first firearm introduction in 1949, a stylish .22 caliber target pistol, was considered “the first gun” of many Americans and is still one of the most popular target pistols in widespread use. Beyond his extraordinary accomplishments in the firearm field, Bill was a charter founder of NSSF and a tremendous supporter of the foundation’s efforts.
“The NSSF Hall of Fame reminds everyone of the pride we take in our industry and what our leaders then and now stand up for—the freedom to make, own and use firearms responsibly in America,” said Bartozzi.
This prestigious group of 2023 NSSF Hall of Fame inductees joins the ranks of past honorees, whose biographies who can be found on NSSF’s Hall of Fame website.
NSSF unveiled the Hall of Fame concept and inducted the inaugural class of six at the 2020 SHOT Show. No Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place in 2021 when SHOT Show was conducted virtually due to the pandemic. Six were inducted last year—three each for 2021 and 2022.

Dave Baron Honored with NSSF Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award
LAS VEGAS — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, today presented its highest honor—the Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award—to Dave Baron, former owner and CEO of Baron Technology, a Connecticut-based firm known throughout the firearm industry for its quality engraving and finishing services.
The award was presented at NSSF’s annual Members Meeting during the industry’s annual trade show, the SHOT Show®.
The NSSF Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves by their long-term commitment to the success of the industry and by their support of NSSF’s mission to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports.
Throughout his career, Baron has given back to this industry and the people—youth and adults—who use its products responsibly for enjoyment in recreational shooting and hunting. His dedication to supporting youth programs monetarily and with his own time connects with his passion for conservation and doing his part to help the shooting sports endure.
After six years with the U.S. Marines, Baron joined the family business in 1982, the year it was founded by his father, Frank. Baron has spent his entire career there, rising to president, CEO and owner. The company, which grew rapidly, made its mark engraving and detailing countless collectible firearms and other products—many of them used in fundraising auctions to benefit worthy causes.
Baron’s particular interest has been to support youth participation in the shooting sports as well as children who struggle with illness and disease. He has been a board member and president of the Kids and Clays Foundation, which supports Ronald McDonald House through fundraising clay shoots around the country. He currently serves on the boards of the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, 4-H Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Wild Turkey Foundation.
His life of service and generosity has brought him other accolades, including twice being named SHOT Business Person of the Year, earning the NRA Personal Achievement Award and being named to Outdoor Life’s “25 People Who have changed the Face of Shooting and Hunting.”
Baron has long supported the NSSF and its Project ChildSafe® firearm safety program, the NRA Foundation and Friends of NRA. He was a founding member of Youth Shooting Sports Association, which was organized to deliver firearms, ammunition, targets and supplies to youth shooting programs across the nation.

The Extrema Ratio S-THIL STONE WASHED is a backup tactical knife of monolithic construction milled out of a 5 mm (0.2”) bar of BOHLER N690 steel, developed in cooperation with designer Thilo Arnd Schiller.
The spear point blade is heat treated to 58 HRC for best combination of edge retention and toughness. It has a false double edge to make it very effective in thrusting and piercing and has a full length fuller that flows elegantly from the blade into the handle. The blade is milled integral to the knife for better compactness and lightness, with minimum thickness yet with a pattern that reminds of the classical Extrema Ratio knife grip.
This profile creates two small guards and a comfortable thumb rest to prevent the hand from slipping towards the blade. On the pommel there is a diamond shaped skull crusher and a slot for a wrist strap or for giving the knife a paracord grip wrap.
The stamped nylon sheath has been designed to be extremely flat and very narrow, to keep it as compact as possible. Knife design makes the sheath ambidextrous and allows to insert the knife with the edge on the left or the right. The integral twin retention system is composed of four pressure elements that work one pair at a time, according to the direction the knife is inserted, while the textile nylon part has a button and a strap to secure the knife to the sheath.
The tip of the sheath has a hole to allow debris or liquids to be expelled simply by blowing into it. The sheath can be used with belt clip, ULTICLIP or malice clip making it extremely versatile, while it is also possible to attach it to a M.O.L.L.E. webbing just by weaving paracord through it.

NSSF Names Louisiana State Rep. Blake Miguez 2022 State Legislator of the Year
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, recognized Louisiana Republican state Rep. Blake Miguez as the 2022 NSSF State Legislator of the Year for his determined commitment to protect the firearm industry against “woke” discrimination.
The award was presented by Laurie Aronson, Chairwoman and CEO of Lipsey’s and member of NSSF’s Board of Governors.

Louisiana House of Representatives Majority Leader Miguez sponsored the 2021 Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act. Rep. Miguez has also championed Second Amendment rights for Louisiana residents by sponsoring many bills including carrying firearms for self-defense in churches, state firearm law preemption and restoration of Second Amendment rights for non-violent offenses.
Rep. Miguez finished 5th in the 2022 IPSC World Shoot in Thailand in November 2022 and helped Team USA claim the Silver Medal. DriX Unmanned Surface Vehicle takes part in Digital Horizon 22 military exercise organized by US Navy in Bahrain
Saint-Germain-en-Laye – 19/01/2023 – Exail, formerly iXblue, recently took part in the Digital Horizon Unmanned & Artificial Intelligence Exercise in Bahrain, organized by the US Navy. The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet held the three-week exercise in December to test new unmanned technologies, as part of its plans to establish the world’s first Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) fleet of one hundred drones in the Gulf by the end of the summer.
The current geopolitical situation means that manned assets are in increasing demand elsewhere, leading the Navy to look to the latest unmanned technologies to expand its capabilities. Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, set up Task Force 59 last year to speed new tech integration across the 5th Fleet, and seek alternative, cost-effective solutions for conducting Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) missions. Maritime Domain Awareness can be defined as the effective understanding of military and non-military events in the maritime environment that could impact the security, safety, economy, or environment of a nation or a region.
Exail’s DriX USV was among the fifteen USVs and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) selected to participate in the exercise, which staged a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) mission. The USVs and UAVs were tasked with gathering data on the surface in order to detect and identify potential threats. One of the main requirements was for the drones to communicate with each other using a common OPS system. The complementarity aspect of the different drones was also important, as the 5th Fleet aims to leverage the different capacities of each drone to cover a wide array of competencies in order to produce a Common Operating Picture of what is occurring in a specific zone of water.
With its highly hydrodynamic monohull and drop keel, DriX showed high reliability with excellent seakeeping and speed results, accomplishing its mission of gathering data on the surface and proving its capacity to successfully integrate third party radar and cameras. The ability of DriX to integrate within a military communications network was successfully proven, thanks to its wide range of communication means (including Certus, 4G, Wifi and Silvus). The USV further meets requirements in terms of communications redundancy, crucial for minimizing risk during military operations, and is fitted with an advanced collision avoidance system that ensures robust and safe autonomous navigation at sea.

Tasmanian Tiger® Introduces TT Small Combi Rig
The TT Small Combi Rig is a light, flexible, and modular belt harness.
Tasmanian Tiger®, a tactical nylon line of products distributed exclusively for the US market by Proforce Equipment, Inc., is pleased to introduce the TT Small Combi Rig, a light, flexible, and modular belt harness. It has a removable hook and loop magazine module which can be used on plate carriers. The accessories pocket and MOLLE side flaps are also removable.
The TT Small Combi Rig features adjustable, flat padded straps and removable laser-cut MOLLE side wings suitable for magazines or pouches. The back is covered in hook and loop, making it compatible with use as a front flap for plate carriers. The TT Small Combi Rig also has a hook and loop divider for individual division for the magazine module. Thus, it can be used for M4, G36, or AK magazines. It also has interchangeable magazine inserts for three M4 (PMAG) magazines (50g) and four pistol / MP7 magazines (40g). The TT Assault Pack (or similar) can be attached to the back of the TT Small Combi Rig.
The removable inside pocket is like the TT Tac Pouch 12 and features three loops on the back for glow sticks, etc. The bottom has a stretch insert and bungee cord for a tourniquet.
The TT Small Combi Rig weighs in at 1.56 lbs. (710 kg.) and is made from Cordura® 700 denier (Multicam 500 denier). Available in Olive, Black, and Coyote for an MSRP of $139. Available in Multicam for an MSRP of $149.
