SIG SAUER’S ROMEO-X PRO
SIG SAUER ROMEO-X PRO
The ROMEO-X PRO is an extremely well-designed sight. The housing is rugged, and all edges are beveled making it an excellent choice for the conceal carry customer. The deck height is the lowest I’ve seen, so you can readily co-witness with the regular height factory OEM sights, and combined with three reticle choices the ROME-X series of red dot sights are a top choice.

Extar USA EP9 Carbine Now Available
Lake Havasu, AZ (November 2023) Firearm innovator Extar USA has evolved the popular EP9 platform into a carbine, and not simply given it a longer barrel. Demonstrating once again engineering prowess and a genuine care for customer interests, the EP9 Carbine accomplishes a weight and recoil combination rarely achieved.
Unlike so many other large-format pistol and carbine pairings on the market, Extar has taken the time to recalculate and reformulate bolt mass and spring rate for the increased back pressure longer barrels create. The end result is a carbine that shoots just as softly as the famous EP9 pistol. Additionally, Extar’s Dynamic Mass Bolt eliminates bolt bounce for a safer, smoother-running PCC.
Why Carbine?
Pistol-caliber carbines (PCCs) have had a resurgence of popularity for multiple reasons.
1. Cost of ammunition: Even during ammunition crises, pistol-caliber ammunition is less expensive than rifle ammunition, making range sessions and self defense less expensive.
2. Shared magazines/ammunition: The EP9 Carbine is fed using Glock-pattern magazines, so the same magazine and ammunition can function in your pistol and your rifle. Extar’s own 9mm Glock-pattern magazines make this even more affordable.
3. Competition: PCC-based competitions have gained popularity for the reasons above plus can be run at any pistol-rated range. Weighing in at just over 5lbs, the EP9 Carbine is sure to provide a speed-and-handling advantage.
4. Fun!: A carbine that costs less to feed, is easier to handle, and can be used more places is simply fun to have. Additionally the firearm you use more is likely to be the one you become more proficient with, turning fun times into training.
Specifications:
- Caliber: 9×19 Luger
- Barrel Length: 16.25″
- Barrel Thread: 1/2-28″
- Handguard Length: 8”
- Capacity: Up to 33rd
- Magazine: Glock 9mm double stack magazine compatible (G19 & G17)
- Overall Length Collapsed: 31.25″
- Overall Length Extended: 35”
- Overall Height: 7.9″
- Overall Width: 2″
- Weight (Unloaded): 5lbs. 2oz.
- Bolt & Barrel Finish: BLACKNITRIDE+
- Trigger Action: Single-Stage
- Charging Handle: Side-Charging Reciprocating
- PATENTED Last-Round Hold Open
As with all Extar USA products, pricing is kept to a minimum by selling direct to consumer. The EP9 Carbine is available at ExtarUSA.com
About Extar USA: Since 1995 the personnel behind Extar USA have been redefining possibilities in the firearms industry. Innovations such as the first rifle-caliber polymer receiver sets, the first Glock-type magazine last round bolt hold open for personal defense weapons, and advanced recoil absorbing technologies are Extar USA’s pedigree. Today Extar’s mission is to provide lightweight, fun, and reliable firearms at a price working Americans can afford.

The RS1.2 and S.3 from Maven
Maven Bolsters Its Premium Line of Optics with the RS1.2 Riflescope and S.3 Spotting Scope
LANDER, Wyo. (Nov. 28, 2023) – Maven Outdoor Equipment Company, a Wyoming-based direct-to-consumer brand known for offering world-class optics at affordable prices, has expanded its award-winning lines of premium riflescopes and spotting scopes by introducing the RS1.2 Riflescope and S.3 Spotting Scope.
The RS1.2 is the culmination of years of research and development, resulting in a scope that is unrivaled in clarity, accuracy and reliability. Built on the rugged and time-tested frame of the RS.1, the RS1.2 offers enriched features such as an illuminated reticle, capped windage, a true zero-stop and a dialable elevation turret. The new 2.5-15×44 first focal plane scope weighs in at just 26.4 ounces, less than 2 ounces more than the original RS.1 and is offered with Maven’s popular MOA-2 reticle and a new SHR-MIL reticle.
“We continuously explore opportunities to enhance our product offering to meet the needs of customers,” said Brendon Weaver, Co-Founder and Head of Design/Marketing for Maven. “The introduction of the RS1.2 is the latest example of that. We incorporated feedback from customers and industry professionals to implement new features into the original RS.1 design that add more versatility to our lineup.”
The RS1.2 also features premium ED glass for impeccable clarity, a smooth focus mechanism, precision-engineered adjustments, tactile click detents and robust anodizing to resist heavy use and ensure durability.
The S.3 spotting scope is the perfect complement to Maven’s line of premium spotting scopes. Sitting comfortably between the full-sized S.1 and ultra-compact S.2, the new S.3 features a powerful 20-40 magnification range with a 67mm objective lens in a frame that measures just 13 inches and 60 ounces. It also features a detachable eyepiece to offer ultimate flexibility in addition to elite performance. The S.3 is available in both a straight (S.3S) and angled (S.3A) configuration so users can choose an option to best fit their needs.
“We designed the S.3 to be as versatile as possible,” Weaver said. “It’s positioned between the full-size and compact offerings, so it’s an incredibly convenient size that still offers a wide range of magnification. Plus, the flexibility to swap eyepieces allows users to adapt as their activities and needs change.”
Just like the rest of the brand’s S Series lineup, the S.3 incorporates fluorite glass, which is universally recognized as the premium choice for larger objective lenses. This exceptional glass ensures razor-sharp clarity from edge to edge, exceptional performance in low light conditions, and the delivery of vivid, distortion-free and brilliantly bright images.
The Maven RS1.2 riflescope ($1,200) and S.3 spotting scope ($1,800) are available now for purchase at www.mavenbuilt.com. Both optics can also be fully customized using Maven’s renowned Custom Optics Builder.

How high-tech HF radios are boosting Tobago’s disaster communications networks
How high-tech HF radios are boosting Tobago’s disaster communications networks

Automatic link establishment in high-frequency (HF) radios means a faster response from emergency management teams and a reduced need for experienced operators.
The disaster management agency in the Caribbean island nation of Tobago is bolstering its emergency response systems. Tight state budgets and the increasing frequency of disasters as a result of climate change have led island officials to search for solutions and improved emergency communication equipment, including HF radios.
Calls for help were answered by Australia-based Barrett Communications, who have donated HF radios, antennas, and state-of-the-art equipment to the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA).
The tiny island is about 30 miles long and just over 10 miles wide at its longest point, possessing beautiful but rugged terrain. Its geographic location means the island is often hit by droughts, earthquakes, flooding and landslides. Just outside the hurricane belt, Tobago is still occasionally struck by devastating weather events such as Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
Crucially, the United Nations Development Programme has identified small island developing states as those most vulnerable to climate change. As part of this classification, Tobago is vulnerable to temperature increases, changes in precipitation and sea level rises. Other vulnerabilities include rising risks of flooding, increased frequency and intensity of hurricanes, hillside erosion and loss of coastal habitats.
Now, the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is preparing for the likelihood of a rising number of extreme weather events due to climate change.
With an urgent need to modernise its disaster response capabilities, the TEMA team was faced with another hurdle – inadequate state budgets made worse by Covid-19. Tourism is Tobago’s primary economic driver, and the sector fell flat during the pandemic. Budgets assigned to certain teams at the start of the pandemic were reallocated to ensure the island could handle the impact of Covid-19. However, authorities still had to be prepared for other emergencies.
“We still had a responsibility to provide emergency management services and be ready for a meteorological event,” says Allen Stewart, director of TEMA.
Radio networks for emergency response teams
Curtis Roberts, a telecommunications officer at TEMA who also is an experienced radio operator, said that a severe weather event in November 2004 – after Hurricane Ivan struck the island just two months prior – was a turning point in the island’s approach towards emergency management. The storm caused landslides that downed powerlines and disrupted cellular communication. Roads and telecommunication infrastructure was heavily damaged, and the TEMA team relied heavily on HF radio systems during the recovery period. The team began integrating HF radios into their telecommunications plan.
“We knew it was important to create an HF radio network,” says Roberts. Over the past nearly two decades, the TEMA team has worked systematically to implement the best practices, as laid out by the UN. There are additional efforts underway to create an interconnected region-wide radio network across the Caribbean to prepare for future events.
“Now we have to modernize to continue to increase the effectiveness of that sector, and a big part of that is the [radio] automatic link establishment,” says Roberts.
Cub Scouts communicated across the world as part of a wider initiative (Photo provided by TEMA)
Improving disaster response with robust radio networks
Without automatic link establishment, a trained radio operator has to find the right frequency, involving trial and error, and most crucially – time.
“With the automatic link establishment, it allows us to program about 15 HF frequencies in the Barrett ALE radios, and the radio automatically chooses the right frequency. It takes out the inefficiency and it speeds up the process,” says Roberts.
TEMA is using the 4050 HF SDR Barrett radios that are equipped with this automatic link establishment, which Roberts says ultimately makes his team more effective responders.
He added that the automatic link establishment also removes the need for an experienced radio operator. This means that there’s a bigger pool of people within an organization who can operate the radio in the event of a disaster.
Explaining how easy the radios are to use, Roberts points to a recent initiative where youth scouts in Tobago teamed up the amateur radio fraternity and used the Barrett 4050 radios, a portable 10M mast and the SWC-100 broadband antenna to communicate with scouts around the world.
Barrett donated 12 HF radios, including two 4050 touchscreen SDR radios, one of which is mounted in a pelican case and equipped for rapid deployment; the other is a base radio. TEMA also received six PRC-2090 radios, two of which can be deployed as manpacks allowing emergency response teams to easily navigate tropical jungles and rugged terrain to reach people in need. The Barrett equipment also means that teams can easily navigate tropical jungles and rugged terrain to reach people in need. Of the four Barrett 2050 radios, two will be used as base radios, allowing for communication with response teams in the field.
“The donation makes us leaders in disaster response communications in this region,” says Stewart.

12 Days of Giving Starts Tomorrow
The Army Special Forces Community has faced more war and loss than any other Special Operations Force during the past two decades. Unfortunately, this often results in silent suffering, as our warriors and their families endure the unseen challenges of back-to-back combat deployments. The cessation of active conflict has not resolved the challenges; instead, it has revealed new struggles—the internal battles that warriors face upon returning home.
Your Support Matters!
Your support is critical to our ongoing efforts to address these pressing issues. We invite you to become part of the SFCT family and make a real difference in the lives of those who continue to sacrifice on our behalf!

NICS Checks Top 680,000 for ‘Black Friday’ Week
NICS Checks Top 680,000 for ‘Black Friday’ Week
November 27, 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, revealed that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) completed 680,671 background checks related to firearms for the week leading up to, and including, “Black Friday,” one of the busiest shopping days of the year. That figure is down slightly from 2022’s total of 711,372 for the same time period. The 2023 total is a 4.3 percent decrease from the 2022 figure.
FBI NICS completed 214,913 background checks on “Black Friday” alone. That is the highest figure recorded for a “Black Friday.” The figure approximates firearm sales at retail on that day, although it also includes background checks for other purposes related to firearms such as approvals for concealed carry permits. NSSF will later this week release its Adjusted NICS figures for November reflecting only those background checks related to the sale of a firearm at retail.
NSSF has worked with firearm retailers to spread out special sales offers to customers throughout the week leading up to “Black Friday” so as not to overwhelm FBI NICS on a single day, which can result in longer than normal wait times.
“The background checks reported by the FBI are in keeping with the trends NSSF has seen throughout the year. Firearm sales remain consistently strong, with over a million per month for more than four years running,” explained Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “These figures tell us that there is a continued strong appetite for lawful firearm ownership by law-abiding Americans and that firearm manufacturers across the country continue to deliver the quality firearms our customers have come to expect.”
Annual background check data shows that firearm sales will typically rise during the final months of the year coinciding with hunting seasons and holiday sales.
Below are the breakout tables for each day of unadjusted FBI NICS background checks.

Revolutionary Fiber Optic Products for Military Use
Revolutionary Fiber Optic Products for Military Use
Muehldorf a. Inn. In the military sector, the interoperability of systems plays a crucial role in modern defense operations. It allows different units and forces to work together seamlessly, share information latency-free and in real time, and use resources efficiently.
For example, for high demands on data rates and fast, interference-free transmissions, fiber optic technology offers the following advantages, which are of crucial importance in the military environment:
-
Transmission range
-
Security against eavesdropping
-
Latency
-
Weight reduction
-
Scalability
-
Density
The ODU Fiber Optic portfolio includes a variety of different connectors and transmission technologies such as POF, Physical Contact, Expanded Beam and Expanded Beam Performance. ODU has developed fiber optic and hybrid connectivity solutions for different connector series that combine fiber optic technology with power contacts and various connection cross-sections for transmission media – both as GOF (multimode / singlemode) and POF system solutions.
Due to the high requirements for connecting fiber optic cables to the connector, the portfolio includes fully assembled fiber optic system solutions.
Especially for military applications, the ODU portfolio includes various fiber optic connectors, so that the advanced technology can be used in the following application examples:
-
Communication links with high data transfer rates, such as command posts or operations centers
-
Long-range connections between two or more transmitting and receiving points
-
Stationary data links in a military context (nodes in port infrastructures, airfields and air defense structures)
-
Radio and data distribution points at the tactical level, such as forward command posts (FOB) or static command posts
Whether it’s harsh environments, high mating cycles or long transmission distances, ODU Fiber Optic is the ideal system solution for military applications where speed and reliability are critical. The Fiber Optic solutions are safe, fast and hardly susceptible to failure.
ODU delivers quality and stability – for high-performance optical technologies that can serve a wide and demanding range of applications.
Highlight: Expanded Beam Performance
Using Fiber Optic connectors is frequently accompanied by a time-consuming cleaning procedure before each mating process.
This is not the case with ODU: The revolutionary Expanded Beam Performance technology provides high-end transmission characteristics with ultra-low attenuation values over many mating cycles. Since there is no direct contact between the contact ends, they are insensitive to dirt and can be easily cleaned. In near-use conditions, the contact transition enables up to 25,000 mating cycles with compressed air cleaning after 5,000 mating cycles.
The ODU AMC ® Expanded Beam Performance Series T Size 9 with an outer diameter of less than 19 mm is the world’s smallest 12-channel lens connector that ensures reliable transmission with no loss of signal path. The excellent optical performance remains unchanged even under high mating cycles, heavy mechanical stress and other environmental influences.
Robust, application-specific connector systems
ODU connectors for the military, security, and communication technology offer the highest level of signal integrity through 360° shielding. Five-finger coding and colour coding provide support in extreme situations and prevent mismating. Even on the smallest installation space, different configurations are possible. The rugged enclosures are waterproof to IP6K9K, nonreflective and available with different connection types and locking mechanisms.
Robust under high loads and extreme temperatures, resistant to dust, water and vibration. Optimized for demanding applications due to high resilience and transmission reliability, even under the most technically challenging environmental conditions.
For more information, visit https://odu-connectors.com/technologies/fiber-optic/expanded-beam-performance/ or visit us at Enforce Tac taking place Feb. 26-28, 2024, at Booth 8-508 in Hall 8.

It’s Black Friday, and Time for our Annual Holiday Shopping Suggestions!
![holiday-snow[1]](https://twobirdsflyingpub.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/holiday-snow1-4.gif "holiday-snow[1]")
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
It’s that time of the year again and we’d like to help you pick that perfect gift for your special someone. In making our recommendations we look for innovation, quality, value and exceptional customer support. LPVOs are in for 2023 and we have some great suggestions for you. We’ll also turn you on to some outstanding red dot sights and a few super stocking stuffer ideas.
Our Favorite LPVOs
At the top of our list is German Precision Optics (GPO) GPOTAC 1-6x24i FFP. This LPVO has the best optical clarity of anything on the market. Wind and elevation adjustments are precise and reticle illuminations allows for continuous adjustment, you will never experience a situation where at one setting the reticle is too dim and the next highest setting is too bright. Ladies, this is a gift that will get you that bathroom remodel you’ve been wanting.
Second on our list is SIG SAUER’s TANGO6T 1-6×24 DVO. The TANGO 6T is an LPVO used in the U.S. Military, in 2023 it became available to the commercial customer. The optic ships with the ALPHA 4 mount. SIG went out of their way to include markings on the mount to indicate the proper order and torque for the rail mount and scope rings. This is a tactical scope from the ground up and one that you’ll want on your rifle for competition shooting.
Third on the list is the Vortex Optics Strike Eagle 3-18×44 FFP riflescope. The Strike Eagle line was in need of an intermediate to longer range magnified optic, so in 2023 Vortex introduced the STRIKE EAGLE 3-18X44 FFP MOA. At its price point the new rifle scope is the best performing optic for your DMR platform on the market. I can’t think of a better Holiday gift. Although not an LPVO, we decided to sneak this in because it is such an outstanding intermediate magnification optic from a great company.
Fourth on our list is the RITON 5 TACTIX 1-10X24 LPVO, this LPVO from Arizona based RITON was the talk of the town at Shot Show 2023.This long-awaited first focal plane optic was designed as a bridge between the lower magnification Low Power Variable Optics and the long-range engagement variable optics. Its 10X magnification allows for a more precise longer-range engagement.
Red Dot Sights You’ll Want
GPO, German Precision Optics, hit a homerun when in 2023 introduced the SPECTRA red dot reflex sight. This is an open emitter sight and it is the best design I’ve encountered. It is the ideal companion for your subcompact and micro-compact CCW pistol. It’s optical performance is superb, the 3 MOA dot is sharp and free from any artifacts, and its auto brightness is the best I’ve encountered. The real plus of the SPECTRA is simplicity making it an ideal choice for the average gun owner.
The HOLOSUN SCS-MOS (Solar Charging Sight) is a direct attachment optic for full-size GLOCK™ MOS systems. It is designed to attach directly to the slide without an adapter plate and uses HOLOSUN’S solar charging system with multi-directional light sensors to automatically adjust brightness in dynamic situations. It features a 2 MOA dot, 32MOA circle or circle dot reticle.
C&H Precision’s maiden voyage into the highly competitive red dot sight space has been exceptionally successful, with outstanding offerings at a price point superior to its competitors for comparable features and technology. C&H Precision has done just that with their impressive line of red dot sights. The COMP red dot sight offers a panoramic view, clear crisp optical clarity, a well-defined 3 MOA red dot, illumination that supports night vision, and motion detection. You can’t ask for more.
SIG SAUER Electro-Optics recently introduced two open emitter red dot sights the ROMEO-X PRO and ROMEO-X C. The PRO version is designed for the full-sized frames and the XC is aimed at the compact and micro-compact frames. These sights are derivatives of SIG’s M17 military red dot sight. They are rugged, 20,000 hrs. of run time on a single battery, and a low deck height which allows co-witnessing with regular height sights. But what Is key to our recommendation is the simplicity of use and buttons that a normal hand can reliably operate.
Some Great Stocking Stuffers
The Streamlight PROTAC® RAIL MOUNT HL-X PRO is the light you’ll want to outfit your long gun with. A whopping 1000 lumens, lightweight, and low-profile. The ProTac Rail Mount HL-X Pro features a rugged, integrated rail clamp designed to rapidly and securely attach to rifles, carbines and sub-machine guns with a MIL-STD 1913 (Picatinny) or, by using the included M-LOK® mount, to M-LOK or M-LOK compatible rail systems. It is powered by either two 3-volt CR123 lithium batteries or one Streamlight rechargeable SL-B26® lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack. This multi-fuel option allows for use of primary disposable batteries if the rechargeable cell is out of power.
When Streamlight launched the ProTac 2.0 handheld light, they delivered one of the best handheld’s on the market. It’s USB rechargeable, produces a 2000 lumen beam and it’s TenTap Programable. The ProTac 2.0 is the handheld I would want to carry as military or law enforcement. It is a mere 6 inches long and weighs 8 oz. The light ships with a USB-C cord, removable pocket clip and nylon light holster.
If you are a GLOCK owner, the first thing you’ll want to do is get rid of the OEM polymer sights and pick up a set of XS Sights R3D 2.0. Texas based XS Sights is at the top of the list for quality Glock night sights. The company also manufactures a GLOCK centric sight pusher that makes installing your new GLOCK sights a snap. To make your Christmas brighter the company has expanded the R3D 2.0 line for additional platforms to include S&W, Taurus, HK and FN. You won’t find better sights than XS Sights.
Spyderco’s Lil Temperance 3 is an exceptional pocket folder in every respect. Its build quality and design make this pocket folder an excellent EDC or utilitarian tool. If you’re looking for an outstanding knife that will serve you well whether you’re a plumber or CEO, Spyderco’s Lil Temperance 3 fits the bill.
Streamlight introduced the TLR-8 SUB line of weapon mounted lights to deliver a high-performance light/laser accessory for the subcompact pistol frames. As with other members of their SUB line, mounting is platform specific. The TLR-8 SUB is available as a red laser model or the TLR-8 SUB G, a green laser version. A great accessory from a great company for your subcompact pistol!
Mantis is an Illinois based company with the mission of developing high tech training products designed to improve military, civilian and law enforcement shooting skills in complete safety. This year, they introduced the BlackbeardX for all of the Sig Sauer MCX owners. The Blackbeard systems replace the magazine and bolt carrier of your AR style platform. It then allows the trigger to automatically reset eliminating the need to manually cycle the action. For every trigger pull you get a laser light impulse, and using advanced software it’s analyzed for a variety of variables like movement and accuracy. The Blackbeard system is 100% safe and a great way to train at home with your family and friends.

First up? Warrior Poet Society.
This completely custom build features our cutting-edge and heavy-duty RIS III rail. Known for its SOCOM legacy and rock-solid 6-bolt System, the RIS III makes the WPSM4A1 the perfect do-it-all rifle.
Paired with the Holosun 515 CM atop the Unity FAST Micro Mount and a pinned and welded Surefire Warcomp. Owners can quickly acquire and keep shots on target time after time.
The Radian Raptor charging handle, Radian Talon safety and Railscales components make for comfortable and familiar ergonomics, while the first-time-ever OD Green Cerakote sets the WPSM4A1 apart from any DD currently in the market.
And finally, the Geissele SSA trigger makes every shot crisp and consistent.
